Brace yourself for disappointment; the writing for Castlevania Nocturne is pretty bad. Warren Ellis, the writer on the original netflix series, got blacklisted recently because he offered career advancement in exchange for nudes/flirting from fans on his web forum.
Well that fucking sucks. Glad he got exposed though, what a creep
Ah well maybe the writing on nocturne will suck. but honestly I was mostly planning to watch it just to look at sexy vampires anyways, so.

Maybe I’m just being paranoid and it’s only a coincidence but uhhh I’m concerned about that article you linked about Warren Ellis’ sexual misconduct, because it linked that case to another incident in which artist Taki Soma accused another comic book artist of sexual assault. So it feels a bit concerning that in s3 Ellis wrote two characters named Taka and Sumi who sexually assault Alucard and are killed for it as part of some meaningless torture porn storyline that contributes nothing and lasts way too long. Ellis is the same dude who joked about beating up Igarashi which I don’t care if it was a joke that kind of thing is just tasteless to say about a real life person/coworker.
God, yeah, I've never thought about it in that context before but. Thaaaat would not surprise me at all. And god I wish the shit he said about Iga was as tame as "beating him up" but uhhhhhhh Yeah. Suffice it to say, fuck Warren Ellis, and fuck anyone who tries to claim the show is "progressive" knowing exactly who wrote it and what he put in it

What do you think would happen if the scp foundation found a portal to marvel 616 (comics)
I don't have the energy to respond to this from a worldbuilding perspective; one of these settings is an uncoordinated mishmash of barely-mutually-canon cool ideas thrown together by thousands of writers and fans viewing the same basic ideatic kernels through their respective lenses, and the other is the SCP Foundation.
From a Vibes perspective.... If the crossover were written from the Marvel side of things, structurally it would lend itself to an Exiles plot or a Champions plot (Khan and Morales, not Herc and Ghost Rider.) A one-off glimpse into the mirror darkly, a brief foray into a grim universe in which superheroism was ruthlessly suppressed by the men in black, the joy and wonder of the genre strangled in it's crib. Something in the vein of Ruins by Warren Ellis. The Champions in particular would be good for this because their whole thing is voice-of-the-youth opposition to Authoritarianism and The Man without having the unilateral firepower or social cachet necessary to decisively overthrow the system....yet. This lets you make whatever critique you want to before having them fuck back off to their home dimension, leaving the alternate setting intact for future overuse to the point of being run into the ground Thought Provoking Crossovers.
If the crossover were being written from the SCP side of things (This was a thing for a while, there was a Project Crossover series where people would write SCP crossover fanfic on the main site) The vibes would be significantly different. It would be a story about the SCP foundation stumbling across an Apollyon-class anomaly; A dimension in the clutches of an ongoing metaphysical mutilation of reality to accommodate the endless consequence-free devil-may-care fuckery of a handful of yahoos in tights, at the expense of the 7-billion-and-change people who ontologically Do Not Matter. You'd get some commentary on a world that, for all its focus on justice, freedom and the tenacity of the human spirit, will never be able to escape the gravitational well of the heroes and their soap-opera lives. A good foil for the Foundation, who, despite their ostensible focus on scientific progress and understanding, are also rendered structurally incapable of consistent forward progress by virtue of the medium; after all, mainlist articles that depict the Foundation as having made a significant positive impact are given a lot of their punch by their contrast with the trapped-in-amber status quo depicted in most of the other mainlist articles.

I heard people have explained to you Hector's deal in the show :)
This is my most hated part of it. Not only because Hector in his game is my favorite character, but because even on his own terms, the one in the show is treated in such a vile way, and I see nothing but terrible takes on it that make me think "y'all wouldn't be so horny over this if he was a woman".
So, to summarize his plotline in Season 3. After being manipulated into betraying his master, getting the shit beaten out of him in graphic detail, and dragged through the snow barefoot for a month, the dude is thrown into a jail because he needs to work for the OC #girlboss villains. The idea is to send a diplomat to manipulate him again into trusting them.
The first thing that happens between them is that Hector threatens to kill Lenore, and Lenore beats the shit out of him: you've seen this scene. You can also see how Hector is framed as being a weak idiot for underestimating the cute vampire, because she's actually super stronk and badass. In-universe, this logically means that Hector learns quickly that she could torture him at any time. (also yes it's a repeat of his beating in S2, at the hands of another vampire)
Then Lenore, between one manipulation and the other (she basically says "yeah you're in a cell but it's better than serving Dracula, right?") starts to treat him like a dog, putting him on a leash, calling him "good boy" and taking him on "walkies <3". This is presented in an erotic way, even though Hector isn't very enthusiastic about being dehumanized.
And by the finale, Lenore says something on the effect of "I can't betray my sisters, but I like you and we could run away together". Somehow, Hector doesn't notice the blatant contraddiction, and when Lenore kisses him, he reciprocates and the two have sex. This is for the sole purpose of coaxing him into pledging loyalty to Lenore, and slipping that cursed ring that would bind him and his creatures to the #girlboss vampires. Next scene, Lenore is bragging to her sisters that she wants to train Hector because he's good at fucking.
Side note, the fact that Hector "consented" to sex is used as proof that he wasn't raped. Even though Lenore could have beaten him to death at any moment, even though he spent more than a month in dehumanizing conditions, even though he get frequently described as being "a child in a man's body" who only craves love. but yeah he didn't say no so that's okay.
And none of this matters in Season 4, because Lenore has become a whining brat making dick jokes around Hector when he works, and the story tries to draw parallels between them to show that oh, they Understand each other deep down, and also Hector protects her from another character who is rampaging through the castle, and chooses to stay with her.
Fun fact, at one point she complains that Hector was "the last problem she had to solve", Hector sarcastically thanks her for the ring, she responds with "oh shush you were having fun", and he replies with "until the end". She might as well have said "shut up you were hard what are you complaining about?" and he agreed. Literal female-on-rape apologism in my Castlevania show.
Lenore then steps into the sun because she refuses to live in a cage and she says "I'm sorry for everything you went through" to Hector, the most bastard of non-apologies of all time. And that's it. This is how Hector/Lenore became one of the most popular ships in the franchise, full of people who cry that they deserved a happy ending together, swear that Lenore did nothing wrong and really she treated Hector well, or are simply horny for the cute girl domming the simp boy.
The fact that Warren Ellis was accused of being a sex pest makes the rape fetishism just a little more uncomfortable :)
Needless to say that the games are far less sexualized. Worthy of note is that in Symphony of the Night, Alucard gets tormented by a succubus, but not by giving him erotic vision: by making him relive the day that his mom died. Just saying.
We can talk about respect for the games all we want. We can talk about the poor pacing, the forced swearing and rude jokes, the twisting of characters. But this? This is indefensible to me. I will never, ever shut up about how this acclaimed show has rape apologism in it, and people defend it because it's from a woman against a man - because the story frames it as something hot and that the man deserved for being "evil" (he wanted to turn humanity into livestock for vampires because he was severely abused by humans, and that means he deserved being enslaved to show him what his plan would have entailed. Real argument I've seen. That and "Hector loved in a possessive way like a vampire, so he understood that Lenore enslaved him out of fondness". I can link to you the post if you don't believe me)
Yeah, all of this has been A Lot to unpack. I started reading the Many of Us website after learning of Warren Ellis'… indiscretions… and I really feel like it's colored my understanding of the show, and I wasn't that hot on the show to begin with. I can't imagine how it would feel to be a fan of the games and have them be adapted by this immature hack piece of shit.
Cross-referencing clips of Hector's behavior in Curse of Darkness and Hector's behavior in the show, the disparity was such that I asked Spinning and Woodchipp, "Why is this show so sex-brained?" Some sexualization is to be expected in vampire fiction, but to this degree? Why does goofy St. Germain have to say "God is going to have sex again?" bruh this is "I'm 14 and this is deep" levels of writing. How could anybody take it seriously?
And it's weird too because everywhere I looked on Reddit, people were praising Ellis' comic writing genius. In all honesty, though, he seems like a huge edgelord. The standard for comics writing tends to be rather low, where more often than not gritty shock-value writing tends to be conflated with good writing, so I don't exactly trust that he's this ~hon-hon oh so geniuese~ fauxteur everyone's portraying him as. Especially if THIS is any indication of how he usually writes.
On the subject of Hector's assault… (tw for discussions of assault and rape) I'll be honest, when Spinning and Woodchipp described the ways people have tried to downplay it, a shudder went through me. I refuse to believe there are people in this world who would defend such a thing, much less try to normalize it.
I apologize for mentioning this, but I think it's worth bringing up because this is what the scene reminded me of. When a man wears a condom during sex but takes it off without his partner's permission or knowledge, it is rape by deception.
It's a fitting parallel because Leonore slipped the ring on Hector's finger without his knowledge or consent. It doesn't matter if he'd consented to the sex before then, he didn't consent to wearing the ring. Consent is an ongoing process, not a "well, you consented to ride the roller coaster, now you can't get off" sort of thing. Just because you consent to sex in the moment doesn't mean you consent to everything that happens after it starts.
And since the ring represents further suppression of his free will, it reinforces the notion that his consent is an afterthought at best, second to Leonore's enjoyment. This isn't even getting into the fact that being imprisoned and tortured in the first place means he was inherently set up to suffer a breakdown of free will.
Furthermore, rape is not about sex, it's about power. It's about denying a person their bodily agency. Ask yourself, would Leonore have had to slip the ring onto his finger if she hadn't chained him and beaten him down first?
I have no idea how the scene could be read as anything other than rape. It's rape. I'm sorry. It just is. There's nothing Leonore can say or do after the fact that will render it not-rape because rape is not something that can be edited in post, assholes. To claim otherwise is rape apologia. "You liked it afterwards" is not an excuse, nor is "you didn't say no."
…and then, as if that weren't bad enough, Spinning said another major character got raped by OCs. That, to me, is a big red flag that the creators held an active disdain towards the source material. Because nowadays writing advice urges you, if you can avoid rape-as-backstory, if you can find a more suitable motivation, you ought to do it. The alternative is hurting the rape survivors in your audience with a blasé portrayal of their trauma, or worse, a fetishization of it.
Why is it that writers who are least equipped to handle rape as a subject matter tend to sprinkle it as some sort of Spicy Garnish in their writing? Like you said, CV doesn't really focus that much on sex or rape in the first place. It's almost as though by making the games characters say "fuck" and suffer rape (with little actual repercussions, 'cause God forbid we have Consequences), the creators childishly believed they could make their writing seem much more Dark and Mature than it actually is.
And then people have the gall to defend it. It's so fucking gross, dude.
because the story frames it as something hot and that the man deserved for being "evil"
I actually ranted at length about how disgusting this mindset is and I'm shocked it still appears in the year of our Lord 2023. Rape is not a punishment. Nobody deserves rape. No, not even the worst person you can think of. If you consider rape a punishment someone can earn by behaving badly enough, like seriously, get the fuck away from me lol.
That and "Hector loved in a possessive way like a vampire, so he understood that Lenore enslaved him out of fondness."

I really wish people would differentiate
Tumblr media
Honestly, I think one of the things that makes a lot of fandom culture and what not so toxic is the unableness and unwillingness of people to differentiate between "I like this", "This is good" and "People who made this were good people".
Yes, I chose the Howl's Moving Castle gif for a reason. Because it is one of those examples for me. The movie is messy from a storytelling perspective. The movie is also quite bad if you see it as an adaption. Yes, the book is so much better and I adore that darn book series. But also: I love the movie to bits. I just love it. The atmosphere. The characters. Himbo Howl. The soundtrack. Just everything. I adore it. And to me this is not that much of a challenge to think about all of that at once.
But... yeah, fandom discourse often does not work like that, does it? There is a lot of "I like it, therefore it is great and everyone involved with it is an amazing person!" going on. Or "I dislike it, therefore it is bad and everyone involved with it is a scheming villain".
And you see it in so many regards. Be it: "This media disagrees with me politically, therefore it artistically bad". Or: "I like this actor and his roles, therefore he cannot be a rapist." Or: "I love this book and the adaption does not do it justice, hence everyone who made it wanted to attack me personally."
Meanwhile I am sitting there and feeling anxious whenever I criticize something I actually like, because I always gotta fear that some fans are gonna attack me about it, because who am I to dare criticize it.
You know, I really did like Witcher 2 and Witcher 3 as games. I still think there are some issues with the games and that the games really are bad adaptions of the books.
I absolutely do think that Digimon Universe Applimon is not really well written and has way too many filler episodes. Yet, it still very much is my second favorite Digimon season.
I can acknowledge that Christorpher Nolan makes movies that are really good on a technical level - but I still hate each and everyone of those fucking things.
And yes, I absolutely do see that the Fast & Furious movies are brainless, dumb and not even very well done technically. But I have rewatched them more times than I can count.
Also, yes, I am gonna enjoy Castlevania to bits, even though Warren Ellis is a horrible human being and should see some fucking consequences for what he did.
Oh, and also, I absolutely hate Zac Snyder and the movies he makes and think that no matter whether intentionally or not they have some horrible politics. But I also can admit that he seems to be a pretty alright guy, who cares a lot about the people around them and is very fun to work with.
Why is that so hard for people to do? Why? Why can they not distinguish between personal likes or dislikes and... you know... Quality? Or morality? These are different things. You can like something and still think it is pretty darn bad. Just as you can dislike something and admit it is actually darn good.
I mean, dumb example, but: I do love eating at McDonalds from time to time, and you can absolutely get me to leave by serving almost anything from the French cuisine. I will still readily admit that the latter is the better quality food AND also more healthy.

hi hello!! i'm super interested in getting into midnighter comics, do you have any recommendations for where to get started?? your recs have been so helpful for my comics journey so far, i truly owe you my life 🙏 just read the knight thanks to your suggestion and LOVED it, court of owls is up next
well okay this ask just made my whole day what the hell, this is what i like about comics the most, just sharing and talking about them
anyway, from the top, theres this superhero team in a world without jl, they work for the un and they are called stormwatch!
the first stormwatch comic is stormwatch 1993, i tried to read it and its genuinely awful, BUT some time after it starts, warren ellis takes over and hes genuinely a new type of god and fixes the whole thing but full disclosure i havent read it properly cause the start is so bad
the second stormwatch is stormwatch 1997, also written by ellis (saver of worlds) where midnighter and apollo (do not separate) make their first appearance! its an incredibly solid introduction and it goes from chapter #4 to #6, u can skip the rest, wont lose much context
now we start with the big guns, stormwatch is dismantled and the authority is created, a superhero (antihero) team working outside the law, and it starts with the authority 1999, where midnighter (and apollo do not separate) are finally main characters, i genuinely loved this comic so much SO MUCH
the story continues with the authority 2003, which im currently reading and is not by ellis (patron of writers), so i cannot tell u yet how itll work out but im enjoying it thus far
then (cause i havent read more stuff in between yet) comes midnighter 2007, this one is complicated? the first 10 chapters are extremely fun and enjoyable, basically episodic, mostly written by garth ennis (not quite as godly but pretty nice), then a new guy picks up the series, makes a whole saga with no apollo in it and its terrible so just... just drop it on chapter 10 ill allow it
then the n52 happens and its v confusing and scary
but then we have midnighter 2015, i have good and bad news, the bad news is its a grayson 2014 spinoff so u may be a bit lost on some context but the good news is this comic is REALLY good, its fun, its a finished story, its midnighter learning to be a person and not a killing machine, and its one of my favorite comics as of rn
lastly theres midnighter and apollo 2016 and like... i went to my bookstore to order a physical copy yesterday i am so in love with it, its aesthetically beautiful and the story is insane, basically midnighter goes to hell to save apollo but apollo is already doing a pretty good job cause hes freaking apollo
as a bonus, there are three small stories, the authority: kev, the authority: more kev and the authority: the magnificent kevin all written by ennis about a guy called kevin who actively sucks as a person and how he manages to fuck up everything all the time and piss off midnighter to no end, they are hilarious
as a disclaimer of sorts: midnighters stories, specially the ones by ellis and ennis, are comics for adults in a way batmans arent, batman is dark and sometimes scary, but these comics talk about sex, drug adiction, racism, bigotry and make fun of them, i do bow for them though, they are gritty and pretty edgy but not tasteless

Serin
“You really do heal too fast, don’t you,” Serin said, tracing a finger lightly across the yellow-green splotched skin at the base of her throat.
The implications of that statement were… not something he wanted to think about. His fingers tightened around her waist, and she leaned against his chest with a resigned sigh.
He could get used to this. Sitting in a chair before the window, with her in his lap, watching as the sun sank below the horizon, the sky darkening until only the faintest orange glow remained. Stars shimmered from the blue-gray tapestry twilight left behind, and the breeze from the open window gently wafted across their faces.
As his cheeks tingled with the coolness of the air, he dared to imagine that things were different. That he had courted Alaia as she deserved, and now they lived together. They’d both had a long day and were content to sit together quietly, a blanket draped over them to ward off the chill while they appreciated the beauty of the countryside.
Of course, he had to pretend that no bars marred the view, reminders that they were still prisoners even if their accommodations had changed. Had to pretend that Warren would never return for her, return for him. Had to pretend that he wasn’t confused as fuck as to what this girl saw in him, to look past his moods and the way he’d treated her and the knowledge of his… arrangement enough to have feelings for him.
But pretend he would because who knew if they would ever know something as close to peace as this again.

A bright object falls from the sky and straight through your OC's ceiling. It's Ellis, fresh from falling from heaven, golden ichor dripping from the gash over their eye. They're somewhat delirious and on the verge of a panic attack. What do they do?
Oooh good one!
Rae: Cannot resist the urge to tease Warren a little ("Don't suppose this is one of your friends?") but just as quickly drops the act to help Ellis - talking to them and grounding them through the panic attack, then cleaning up that gash.
Robin: She was raised as a good Irish Catholic woman, even if she doesn't practice it much anymore, so she's probably struggling to sort out a few too many religious realizations (does this make her a prophet? should she help or is that Heaven's business?) to actually help
Madison: Well, there's a body falling through the ceiling, so Bravo's instantly on the defensive, and it's all Madison can do just to keep him from going after Ellis. Eventually she manages to get the wolfdog passed off to Alex, and Ellis passed off to Charles to deal with.
Ophelia: She's Jewish, so part of her assumes Ellis has some kind of message for her (she's never seriously believed in angels in her life, but... she's also never seriously believed in multiversal travel, and look how that turned out for her), and the rest of her is trying to figure out, scientifically, where the hell Ellis could have fallen from and how to get them back up there.
Jasper: Between being a trauma nurse in New Orleans and having had their boyfriend literally Lazarus'd not too long ago, they're actually pretty level-headed about it. They help Ellis out of their panic attack and tend to their wounds, and offer them a spot on the couch until they get things sorted out (that feels unfitting for an angel, but it's the best Jasper has to offer). Maybe once Ellis is a little steadier, they'll miracle away some of Kyle's necromancy scars as a thank-you.
Kestrel: Was also raised Jewish, but also has a lot of dealings with magical creatures across the world, so who even knows what their reaction would be? I like to think they'd try to help, though.
Katherine: She already communicates with a fair number of religious deities... Egyptian ones, but still. She was raised Baptist, she should be able to handle this angel business, right? At the very least, she's able to talk to them without going into a complete existential crisis (been there once, she's an old pro by now lol), and that's a start
Quinn: Something's just crashed through the roof of her trailer... she honestly doesn't give a fuck what it is, it's blocking the door and she's fucking terrified.
Eris: Pros of the situation? They definitely don't seem put-out that Ellis is an angel, which is something. They're somewhere adjacent to a god themself, so it takes a lot to surprise them. The cons of situation? A powerful entity has just crashed straight into their apartment and seems to be threatening their home... yeah, good luck.
Nikoletta: Her home has already become a bit of a space for lost things, so she'll do her best to take care of Ellis - provided they get the roof fixed, of course, Nik and Abner really don't have the cash to spare on that. Baron and Barbie take a liking to them, too. Here's hoping Ellis likes cats, because they'll hardly leave their side.

I never asked before. What’d you think of the Castlevania show? I personally enjoyed it but there were parts that made me go “what the fuck” to Warren Ellis.
I also saw the…weird…Richter clip going around so I’m gonna see about that in a while
I liked the first couple seasons, hated the third, didn't care by the fourth, not interested in the new show

Negative comic rant ahead.
Tumblr media
Article that gives you instant heartburn (I've supplied the link in case anyone wants to see it firsthand, but I've summarized it as well):
And usually I wouldn't post anything about articles like this because it has its fair share of typos and is lacking sorely in context BUT it is posted on the official Marvel website which is Worrisome
Like
Tumblr media
Colossus was forced to kill in self-defense. And he was ANGRY while he did it! Oh no! Gasp! I'm scandalized! He should have made the Good Boy choice of dying and letting everyone die, obviously! /s. Also... you skipped Proteus. He also did this to Proteus, remember?
Tumblr media
Ah, right. Colossus joining Magneto. Which was super shocking, but... he didn't... actually do much of anything during this time other than stand around, talk beliefs, and take care of Magneto. I mean yeah his inaction in the face of crime IS grey. Also, his sister just died and he didn't get to be beside her. His brother just "committed suicide" again, and his mom and dad just died. I... kinda don't care that he chose to join Magneto at this time. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Good for him, in fact.
Tumblr media
WHY ARE WE ACTING LIKE AN ALTERNATE UNIVERSE/DYSTOPIAN FUTURE MEANS ANYTHING CONCRETE FOR CURRENT MAINLINE COLOSSUS, ARE YOU KIDDING ME?
Tumblr media
Yeah, no excuse for this one. This decision wasn't even "morally grey" it was straight fucked up. Though Warren Ellis is on record saying that he did this specifically to character assassinate Colossus because he hated him, he regrets it deeply and wouldn't do it again given the chance.
Tumblr media
He was manipulated and being controlled. Next.
Tumblr media
Manipulated and being controlled. There was a whole follow-up comic where Storm goes after the Pheonix 5, and she states that he's a victim in the whole thing and apologizes to him. You might as well throw the Proletarian scene in while we're at it! Next.
Tumblr media
Manipulated and controlled! 3rd in a row! Wow!
So, to recap; we have 2 responses to extreme grief, one case of actual character bastardization, an ALTERNATE TIMELINE, and 3 cases where he is NOT IN CONTROL OF HIMSELF. By DEFINITION, MORE THAN HALF OF THOSE ARE NOT "CHOICES" THAT COLOSSUS HAS MADE. I don't care if people hate the character or want to talk about him being morally grey, I just wish it could be accurate, consistent, and fair.
Why am I posting about this? Because Colossus is not a hugely popular character, and here's Marvel outlining his "crimes" out of the blue. And I am CONCERNED
BECAUSE
The senior X-Men editor, JDW, hates Colossus with a passion and holds a grudge against the character. Multiple Marvel creatives have talked about pitching a Colossus story and being shot down. Look, I don't want to accuse JDW of anything or implicate that he would let a silly grudge against a fictional character get in the way of Story but... this is Marvel, and I have seen worse.
I also don't want to believe that Percy is going to nosedive into strictly villainizing Colossus. He promised at the beginning of all of this that Colossus fans would like this story and that it would he his Biggest Story yet. So far, Percy has done nothing to back up those claims. I still want to have faith, even though it appears there might only be 6 issues remaining in the series (not really a whole ton of time for a satisfying conclusion, wouldn't you say?) And being as we are still seeing Wolverine grappling with the whole Being Beast's Man-Slave/Attack Dog thing, and Wolverine isn't being villainized for it... it would be a double standard to not follow a similar structure for Colossus, don't you think? Wolverine gets controlled and does horrible things, and we can agree he's not at fault, but the same thing happens to Colossus, and it's different somehow...? Yeah, I don't buy it.
The trend this article sets is concerning to me. I hope this isn't a thing where Marvel is preparing us for Villain Colossus, primarily because the way it's set up reeks of victim blame. We SEE that Colossus is struggling, fighting, and screaming in his mind because he doesn't want to be doing what he's doing. His body, autonomy, and freedom have been stripped from him. He is a PAWN. This is not a conscious decision he is making! So unless they can develop a good reason for that character direction, I don't want it! Really hoping this all turns out to be a rug-pull!
Like... as it stands now, Colossus has ample reason in my book to go full villain. The lack of care he has received in and out of universe is frankly disgusting. Nobody in his life has paid any attention to him for literal years! There were so many red flags that got sped past. He is living in a nightmare where his "friends" either aren't there for him or shrug off his concerning behavior. The friends he left his family for. The family that got torn apart and slaughtered in his absence. And this is a PATTERN for him, which we can actually SEE illustrated in the examples the article gave!
I love Heroic Colossus. That's what drew me to him in the first place! I would love it if he could come out of all of this swinging with his head held high! I want him to prove everybody wrong, to work through his trauma, be genuinely himself, and to finally make some PEACE about his place in the world. But if Colossus is gonna go full villain, I do NOT want it to be half-assed. It needs to be BIG. I want to see his justified RAGE. I want to see all the pain and grief he's bottled up just EXPLODE out. I want him to stop holding back and pulling his punches. No more "morally grey," no toeing the line, FULL SEND IT. To pitch it-- He joined the X-Men for family. The X-Men then BECAME the only family he had. Now, even THAT'S gone!

DO YOU WANT TO READ MOON KNIGHT?
are you a show fan who's learned about how terrible the MCU did moon knight and you want to check out the comics? did you see him in a teamup book and want to know more about him? are you just looking for more comic recs? are you just interested in the character? then you're in the right place!
okay, to begin, i want to say that this is a character that has had a... varying history. there are no moon knight comics you can enjoy without extensive criticism. critisizing the things that you enjoy is good and gives you a better understanding of the work. please do not idolize any of these comics and please work to be kind to the many minorities (jewish people and systems, primarily, but classism, racism, xenophobia, and homophobia are all explored throughout MK's publishing history) that these comics represent. anyway.
MOON KNIGHT 1980 -
tws - doylist racism (racist villainous charactictures, mostly. a lot of this), ableism (outdated terminology for systemhood, occasional slurs), and sexism. extensive discussion of anti-semitism, specifically neo-nazism, in issues 37 and 38.
what happens - moon knight 1980 is a 38 issue comic book centering on the ex-mercenary and now hero moon knight. almost entirely episodic but there are occasionally multi-issue stories.
moon knight, in the day, is the millionare socialite steven grant, and, at night, the hero moon knight- moon knight also "uses" jake lockley as an informant. marc spector was the mercenary moon knight ran away from. doug moench was NOT intending to write a system at this point- steven and marcs relationship is meant to represent one mans struggle with guilt- but its really really easy to gel this with their current situation of being alters in a system and also some of the specifics of their whole thing make me fucking insane. jake is also there and i love him even if he isnt really a major part of the moral conflict
please dont read all 38 issues- attatched is a list of my personal ratings. everything later calls back to this so its best practice to read it first but its very much a slog if you arent already attatched to this character so make your own choice
Tumblr media
nothing from 1980 to 2014 is particularly good (you can read it if you want but i havent) but knowing what happened is pretty important to understanding the later modern runs so a runthrough. throughout the 90s mk continued in the 80s status quo but in 2006 he 1. cut off bushmans (remember that guy from 1980?) face 2. was given a tendency for violence and and 3. became significantly more tense with marlene and frenchie. by 2014 they had completely fallen out. thats all we can continue with the recs now
[Image ID: A list of Moon Knight 1980 issues colored based on their quality. Issues 4, 7-11, 15, 17-20, and 28 are marked as "not good." Issue 27 is marked as "not good makes me insane though." Issues 3, 5, 6, 13, 16, 21, 34, and 35 are marked as "fun." Issues 2, 12, 14, 22 to 26, and 29 to 33, are marked as "good writing." 37 and 38 are marked as "genuinely essential." 1 and 36 are not marked. 29 is denoted as "slightly weird about his DID" and issues 6, 21, and 22, are denoted as "racist." WHAT HAPPENS IN BETWEEN -
MOON KNIGHT 2014 -
tws - graphic violence. do not buy the book new, warren ellis is an awful person. brief (doylist) ableism.
what happens in it - the first six issues are the warren ellis/declan shalvey run, which is what im reccomending. read the rest if you want, its mediocre but i like it
moon knight 2014 is 6 episodic issues centering on a now alone marc spector. steven and jake only show up twice, both lineless appearances in the back of panels. most of the issues are significantly more violent, dark, callbacks to old 1980 issues. most of the run is silent violence from marc but all of the stories are really good and the art is breathtaking.
MOON KNIGHT 2016 -
tws - unreality. mental hospitals. both doylist and watsonian ableism.
what happens - i am reccomending the lemire/smallwood + co run, the 15 issues before the numbers shoot up. i have not read the bemis run.
moon knight 2016 is 15 issues situated in a hallucinatory version of NYC, following moon knight as he struggles against khonshu's attempts to possess him. the thing is a lot of things in 2016 piss me off so i cant exactly sing its praises but its super important to modern moon knight so just. slog through it. highly reccomend reading after 1980 because it refrences A Lot.
MOON KNIGHT 2021 -
tws - violence, discussion of anti-semitism in issue 5.
what happens - i am reccomending the first 16 issues. the annual sort of triggered a falling off for the series and so i have not read after #16. read the later issues at your own risk
moon knight 2021 follows moon knight as he opens the midnight mission, gains multiple new side characters, and reckons with the consequences of the age of khonshu (an event in jason aarons avengers which is explained fine in 2021 so you dont have to read it). most of the series is typical action juxtaposed with MK's SHEILD-ordered therapy sessions. issues 14 and 15 are possibly the first time jake and steven have been written well since 1980. unfortunately, the annual is deeply xenophobic (villianizing the only romanian hero in marvel) and i have stopped reading the series due to this. the first 16 issues are really good though
MOON KNIGHT BLACK WHITE AND BLOOD -
tws - violence.
what happens - mkbwb is 4 issues consisting of 12 noncanon moon knight stories, as is typical for bwb series. most of them are pretty good and fun and also really pretty.
OTHER MOON KNIGHT STUFF -
- ms. marvel and moon knight
- devils reign: moon knight - tw violence, prisons
- west coast avengers 1985, issues 25-41
- hulk 1978 issues 11-20 (not #16), b stories.
- moon knight 2006 issue 3 - for frenchies coming out scene, which is good. not anything else
- heroes for hire 2011 - hes only in a few issues but im not saying which ones because i want you to read the whole thing. because its good
- defenders 1972 issues 47-51 - its Very 70s but its cute and i like it :)
- werewolf by night 32 and 33 - his first appearance!
ENDING THOUGHTS - please god listen to and make a point to be kind to systems and jewish people when you talk about MK.
