Some people are considering a visit to Death Valley this weekend, specifically to experience the possibly record-breaking heat the park will have on Sunday. Here is my advice as a lifelong SoCal resident who has done a lot of traveling in our deserts:

The Virginia iron furnace near Albright, West Virginia is one of a handful of water-powered blast furnaces still standing; they were constructed to smelt pig iron, a key ingredient in steel, in the early days of America's industrial area. Iron ore and limestone from the local mountains were poured onto burning charcoal from the top of the furnace, and molten iron ran out the bottom. The temperature of the charcoal was maintained by a bellows powered by a waterwheel, which was turned by water diverted from adjacent Muddy Creek. Built in 1854, the furnace ran until the end of the 19th Century, and was eventually acquired and preserved by the Daughters of the American Revolution. The structure has since been added to the National Register of Historic Places. In addition to its historical significance and beautiful setting next to Muddy Creek, the furnace also apparently serves as a clandestine meeting place for those seeking a more personal form of recreation (seriously, people will do it anywhere).

Bale Creek Allen was born in Los Angeles in 1968 and currently lives in Austin, Texas. He studied at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. Careful attention to detail, use of familiar objects in unexpected ways, and craftsmanship are Bale Creek Allen's expertise. He was awarded his degree after only 2 years due to the quality of his work.
David Byrne, musician and artist, who has known him for 20 years, stated, "Not only does Bale see his life made of fiddles, ice cream, tire treads, and tumbleweeds, but he accepts that, loves it, and has found a way to use and combine those materials." Allen states, "The tumbleweeds are translations of something organic into something permanent. They are objects of beauty and I want people to see them for their own exceptional sculptural qualities."
The bronze tumbleweeds are created through an extremely complex lost wax casting method and individually coated with variant patinas ranging from 18-karat gold to sterling silver, and nickel. The process of making the tumbleweeds sculptures includes coating the plant with a material that hardens into a vessel tough enough to receive molten bronze. After the coating dries, the tumbleweed is burned out in a furnace to leave an exquisite detailed impression. Similar to tumbleweeds, Allen collected the tire treads and preserved these unwanted scraps by casting them in bronze and sometimes dipping them in 24-karat gold.

Details to know about this version of Prism:
Doctor Roxana Prism was a scientist working for the agency known as Enhanced Operatives Division. A brilliant scientist, she invented many advanced works of tech for the agency, such as the famed telekinetic implant for their field agents. With her intelligence, she started working on projects of her own. One such project was her biggest yet: she was designing robots to replace human field agents. She presented this idea to Director Morales, leader of EOD. He gently put down this idea, calling it a little too ambitious. Prism, however, was too prideful to put her works aside after countless hours of work. One day, she was promised a spot at another agency- Zoraxis. She would be able to continue her work on her robots, and blind to their malicious intent, she willingly accepted the job. Soon after, she learned that the CEO of Zoraxis, a cunning adversary named Dr. Zor, had sabotaged her work, she grew angry and soon went to stop their plan of destabilizing a large ore of kinesium. This worked, and now she is free to work on her own projects. Who knows what she’s up to now?

Northern End of Death Valley, Inyo County, 2023.
With a little bit of extra time to explore, the scale of the National Park becomes truly awesome - it is far more than just Furnace Creek and Badwater. In the gloom of winter, the park is an attractive destination indeed.

Twenty-three towering, brick, beehive-shaped kilns nestled high in the East Pioneer Mountains near Canyon Creek in southwest Montana stand as striking reminders of the area’s industrial mining history. The kilns, built in 1885 for the Hecla Consolidated Mining Company (HCMC), transformed wood into charcoal, the fuel used to power the blast furnaces at its nearby Glendale smelter.
To make charcoal, company loggers denuded nearby forests and delivered trees via wood chutes to the kiln site. Woodchoppers then cut the trees into four-foot lengths for careful stacking inside the kilns. Each 22-foot-tall kiln held 25 to 35 cords of wood. It took one day to charge (load) a kiln, six to eight days to burn, two or three days to cool off, and one day to discharge (unload).
The firemen lived at the site through the whole process, watching closely as white, then yellow, then blue smoke poured from the top vents. Blue smoke indicated the burn was nearly complete and the firemen could slowly seal all the vents from top to bottom, extinguishing the fire. Burning the wood slowly with just enough oxygen ensured the wood would turn to charcoal instead of ash.
In its 16 years in operation, the HCMC charcoal kilns burned an estimated 18 square miles of forest down to 1.5 billion pounds of charcoal.
