Deercember Day Twenty-One: Pampas Deer | Holly and Hawthorn

The pampas deer (Ozotoceros bezoarticus), also known as veado-campeiro in Portuguese and as venado or gama in Spanish, lives in the grasslands of South America at low elevations, specifically across Brazil, Uruguay, Paraguay, Argentina, and Bolivia. Their common name is derived from the pampas (from the Quechua pampa, meaning "plain"), which are fertile South American low grasslands. It is the only species in the genus Ozotoceros. Their habitat includes water and hills, often with winter drought, and grass that is high enough to cover a standing deer. Many of them live in the Pantanal wetlands, where there are ongoing conservation efforts, and other areas of annual flooding cycles. Human activity has changed much of the original landscape. Pampas deer are among the most genetically polymorphic mammals: their current high nucleotide diversity shows that they had very large numbers in the recent past. They are known to live up to twelve years in the wild, longer if captive, but are threatened due to over-hunting and habitat loss. Many people are concerned over this loss, because a healthy deer population means a healthy grassland, and a healthy grassland is home to many species, some also threatened. Additionally, the pampas deer are very curious and like to explore; although this is endearing to observers, their lack of fleeing at the sight of humans makes them easier for poachers to kill. They will often stand on their hind legs to reach food or see over something. They are sedentary, with no seasonal or even daily migration. They usually feed regularly during the day, but sometimes have nocturnal activity. They may share their range with common crop plants including yerba mate (Ilex paraguariensis)—native to Brazil, Uruguay, Paraguay, and Argentina, and cultivated elsewhere—and tejocote (Crataegus mexicana), or Mexican hawthorn—native to Mexico and Guatemala, but has been introduced in the Andes and also cultivated elsewhere. Yerba mate is a plant species of the holly genus which is used to brew a caffeine-rich tea called mate when hot, and served cold alongside other components as tereré. Tejocote fruit is one of the most useful among hawthorns, and is consumed cooked, raw, and canned, or brewed into a hot fruit punch known as ponche. Let’s let the 700th post spectacular continue with a good ol fashioned Late-Night Togashiposting! This time our quarry is far more insignificant on both fronts, but it’s one that’s stuck with me for a while. This time our focus is on the always energetic and spunky Marianne, aka Miss Goldenweek. Girl has a really memorable power that actually is not a result of a devil fruit which is crazy. Especially since we’ve now seen the paint power fruit in Kanjuro.

But here, what I really care about is Gama. The Yu Yu Hakusho character waving around brushes in the background of the Kurama panel. Gama’s a minor villain, but he’s used to set up our favorite fox boy’s best stretch of the gold standard for Shonen tournament arcs. Team Urameshi is whittled down to only a few team members thanks to shady dealings, so Kurama hopes to step up and take out several in sequence. Great, defining moment for him that really sells the combat tactician side. Gama though, let’s talk a little about his power.

Once again, this dude is not very important in YYH. Honestly, Miss Goldenweek’s a pretty good comparison and even that’s only because Gama has the benefit of being part of a much shorter series. The markings are makeup, you may be able to make out the brushes holstered on his left hip. Now, this is here is an application we never saw in Goldie. Painting himself to increase his power. I do like it, there’s a vaguely kumadori vibe. By which I mean Kabuki makeup and not Mr. Yo-Yoi. Speaking of, trivia time. What’s the first point in One Piece we see a big Kabuki nod?

Not 100% if this is what they’re going for in the manga so maybe a trick question, but the anime is blatant. Even gives us a nice IYO! The debut of The Unluckies, fittingly in Chapter 113. I love these weirdos, Crocodile is honestly giving Luffy stiff competition for weirdest crew and their campy 60s spy villain vibes are to die for. Anyways, Gama. It’s pretty simple. His big ability was makeup that could seal a person. One design physically, one for the magic spirit energy.

And that’s where I really do have to wonder with Goldenweek. The way her clash with Luffy happens, some of the way she moves and the way we show action with a paintbrush have always made me remember Gama from Yu Yu Hakusho. Now that Oda’s plugged it and Togashi’s work it feels worth pondering if the oddball Miss Goldenweek wasn’t at least partially inspired by him. Her Colors Trap does work in a similar fashion, just expanded although the implication is that Gama had more abilities. It’s a pretty unique concept, I can’t exactly think of many other examples in anime. And of course, Goldie is such a wildly different design we’re only really talking about the power. Which of course is one of the weirder ones. Not just for the lack of a devil fruit either. Who could forget the end of the Baroque Works cover serial?

Rainbow of Dreams was an absolutely crazy ability! Affected such a wide range and it’s so thematic for this series. It’s fine if it was just having a little fun with the ending, and of course we circle back to the boys who ended the serial captured in Impel Down, but I’d love to see Marianne become relevant again somehow. And I doubt you’d give this kind of unnecessary spotlight to someone so insignificant if you didn’t at least have some fun personal reason behind their creation. Gama wasn’t a big deal in YYH either, but he was memorable. Goldie’s the same way.

Gotta wonder too...was Luffy’s time under Miss Goldenweek’s spell on his mind when he learned about the curse of the SMILE fruits? Thought it was a pretty cool concept to echo. It’s easy to forget how much of a threat Marianne was, and we do pick up that thread of enemies that are hard for Luffy to fight properly in the New World.

Team Masho vs. Team Uraotogi

Previously: Dr. Ichigaki vs. Rokuyukai

Mashoutsukai cheats and their match is held directly after Uraotogi's previous. In addition, Onji and Shishi are tented by Ruka the Enchantress. Beautiful Suzuka has gone over strategy with his team the previous night. Jin, a consummate bro, sits out.

Round 1: Gama vs. Makintaro. They're both Bakken tier at best. In the manga, Makintaro isn't even able to regrow his limbs, although anime Makintaro can trash whatever body part Gama paints. Kurama also has black hair in the comic so that shit's barely hc, so Makintaro wins. He had to cut off like six or seven arms and a leg tho

Round 2: Bakken vs Ura Urashima. Bakken is probably physically stronger than Ura, but can he set up his mist/kill Ura before Ura sets up his force field and opens the Idun Box? Is Ura skilled enough with his fishing line to maintain his distance? This can go so many ways, but Ura's attack actually hurt Kurama, while Bakken beat the shit out of an unconscious Kurama and did little damage. Ura fishes for Bakken in the fog and deals a lethal blow, no Idun needed

Fwiw I know Onji would give them different items for different fights, but since we have no examples, it would be entirely speculation

Round 3: Toya vs. Kuro Momotaro. Toya legit was trying to kill an entirely immobile, defenseless Kurama from step one and still failed. Kuro uses one sphere and bodies the little ice twink

Round 4: Risho vs. Kuro Momotaro. My dude lost to an injured Kuwabara. Like fucking Byakko only lost to himself, let's be honest, so this is Kuwabara's first real win (kendo stick man doesn't count; he fights with a hunk of wood, he's not a serious person). And his big finishing move is just more clay for his armor of clay. One sphere. Ez. By this time Jin has already left. None of this was worth his time and that island was actually tiny af anyway

Team Masho sucks more than Team Uraotogi wins. Kurama no diff'd Gama and Toya was so cumbrained he talked to the cute fox boy for half an episode instead of realizing his lethal strikes weren't killing him; so Kuro's abs have a similar effect. Jin could at least win by ring out against Kuro and then sweep the others (if he doesn't fly into any of Ura's fishing lines), but Team Uraotogi are such scumbags that he'd have no interest -- ears not wiggling/10
