By midday, Gaara had to concede that his wheat was indeed dying.
Yet, he still bent over his crops, frowning and wincing in turn. He touched the soil, the stems, digging through the wilting plants to uncover their roots. The harsh sun bit at the nape of his neck as he had to come to the staggering realization that Miss Yamanaka had been correct in her assessment of his lands.
Still wincing, Gaara removed his straw hat, and he ran a shaky hand through his hair. His crops lay dull yellow, wrinkled, grazing the soil instead of reaching sky-high.
Gaara froze.
He sensed her approaching him before he saw her shadow sprawled against the ground. Miss Yamanaka hovered behind him, craning her neck as if she couldn’t see the entire field, dead.
She chose to wait politely, and he chose to ignore her until she discreetly cleared her throat.
His lips twitched.
Gaara could almost hear the smirk in her voice. Since the discovery of his wilting crops, what had mainly occupied his mind had been Miss Ino Yamanaka and her sharp tongue.
He stood up, slowly, his cold smile, biting, when he finally faced her. She held a vivid purple umbrella above her head, matching her elegant dress and her lacy gloves.
As they faced each other, as stubborn and calculating, they silently agreed they wouldn’t curtsy and bow to each other.
“Miss Yamanaka,” Gaara greeted her, his lips barely moving.
He still felt that the ways of her country and her language echoed, roughened, whenever he saw her. Her, who could slip, so easily between vulgar and delicate.
“Are your crops dying, Mr Sabaku?” she asked, saccharine, and she had the indecency to look stunned, her blue eyes blinking rapidly.
She walked past him to look at his crops, tutting, in feigned solidarity.
Gaara glared at her even if he couldn’t help but admire her, the summer breeze caught in her dress, in her hair.
After a moment, she whirled back toward him, a delicate finger tapping on her chin.
“If only someone had warned you that the quality of this soil is different from Suna.”
“If only,” he deadpanned, refusing to concede.
A flash of anger disfigured her, pinching lips and nostrils, until she was smiling again, nodding her head in agreement. She stopped near him, her umbrella drawing them both in uneven shades.
Under normal circumstances, Gaara never acted this stubbornly, this arrogantly, but Miss Yamanaka had a way about her that made her inhabit his thoughts. She moved, from thought to thought, with a gesture of her hand, a word pronounced in his direction. She had sunk so deep within him, that he felt he carried her within, something he simply couldn’t afford to or allow.
“Yes, if only,” Ino almost spat, but she straightened her back, and her voice remained even and pleasant.
“Good day,” Gaara said, barely tipping his hat at her.
She didn’t move, and so he couldn’t.
She smiled, still squinting at the horizon, bathed in the flickering shades provided by her umbrella.
And she sank deeper within him, impossible to uproot.

Prompt: Create a movie concept for a disney musical animated adaptation of Great Expectations in the vein of Oliver & Co.: the main cast is composed mainly of talking feral, quadruped animals living parallel lives to human society.
Title: Paws & Expectations: A Tail of Two Tails
Logline: Pip, a streetwise alley cat, dreams of a life beyond the trashcans. When a mysterious benefactor (a reclusive parrot) elevates him to a life of luxury, Pip finds himself caught between his loyalty to his scrappy dog best friend, Herbert, and the charming but manipulative Miss Havisham, a pampered Persian cat.
Characters (Animals):
Pip: A resourceful and optimistic tabby cat, yearning for a better life. (Tenor)
Herbert: Pip's loyal and cynical mutt friend. (Baritone)
Miss Havisham: A beautiful but jaded Persian with a dark secret. (Alto)
Magwitch: A gruff but kind parrot, Pip's mysterious benefactor. (Bass)
Joe Gargery: A gruff but honest bulldog, Pip's "adopted" owner. (Bass)
Mrs. Gargery: A loving but overworked sheepdog, Pip's "adopted" mother. (Soprano)
Trabb's Boys: A mischievous pack of street rats. (Chorus)
Compeyson: A sly weasel, Miss Havisham's manipulative lawyer. (Baritone)
Musical Numbers:
Alleyway Blues (Pip & Herbert): Introduces Pip and Herbert's life and dreams.
Shiny Dreams (Pip): Expresses Pip's yearning for a better life.
Unleash the Purrfect Life (Miss Havisham): Showcases Miss Havisham's luxurious lifestyle and desire for revenge.
The Price of Pawsperity (Pip): Shows Pip's internal conflict between his new life and his friends.
Loyalty's Howl (Herbert & Pip): Reaffirms Pip and Herbert's friendship despite their differences.
A Tail Wagging Ending (Cast): Celebrates friendship, loyalty, and finding happiness.
Themes:
The importance of friendship and loyalty.
The dangers of social class and manipulation.
Finding your place in the world, regardless of your background.
Communication Barrier:
The film would emphasize the frustration and humor of the animals' inability to directly communicate with humans. Pip, for instance, might try to warn Miss Havisham about Compeyson's deception through elaborate gestures and playful nudges, while Miss Havisham misinterprets them as signs of affection.
This creates a unique dynamic where the audience, privy to the animals' thoughts and feelings, gains a deeper understanding of their struggles and motivations, often contrasting with how the humans perceive them.

In Tokyo, sixteen-year-old Nao has decided there's only one escape from her aching loneliness and her classmates' bullying, but before she ends it all, Nao plans to document the life of her great-grandmother, a Buddhist nun who's lived more than a century. A diary is Nao's only solace—and will touch lives in a ways she can scarcely imagine.
Across the Pacific, we meet Ruth, a novelist living on a remote island who discovers a collection of artifacts washed ashore in a Hello Kitty lunchbox—possibly debris from the devastating 2011 tsunami. As the mystery of its contents unfolds, Ruth is pulled into the past, into Nao's drama and her unknown fate, and forward into her own future.
Full of Ozeki's signature humour and deeply engaged with the relationship between writer and reader, past and present, fact and fiction, quantum physics, history, and myth, A Tale for the Time Being is a brilliantly inventive, beguiling story of our shared humanity and the search for home.
