Pandorian Problems

It’s time for my occasional, that is sporadic, what I mean is unregularly-but-now-and-then-happening post about SSO, and also SsL, and even OSS, which you can interpret as meaning Old Star Stable or Original Star Stable, depending on whether you consider those games the old games, or the original games.

As not-exactly-usual, but certainly as often, my current concern is Pandoria. You might have guessed so from the title. And it’s about some problems, which you might have gathered as well.

I really wonder just how pink Pandoria is supposed to be in Star Stable Online. And I also wonder how much it’s supposed to be the “pink hell” (which it really isn’t, but I’m not sure of SSE understand that) as commonly called on here.

The “pink hell”

Is Pandoria pink in SSO? I wonder. We see it as a rather muted purple, with some pink sky and details, but not nearly as pink as it is in SsL. But then again, it is described as extremely pink in the Soul Riders books.

Now there’s three possibilities:

Pandoria looks the way it looks in SSO and that is meant by the pink description in the books, because that’s clearly pink enough.

Pandoria used to be extremely brightly pink but somehow got darker and more purple.

The part of Pandoria described in the books is also the part that appears in SsL and therefore bright pinkt, whereas the darker, purpler part of Pandoria we see in SSO is an entirely different part altogether.

We know for sure that it is a different part in SSO. The part with the Fripp statue, and the old temple-ish building, etc. is obviously in a different area of Pandoria. Why shouldn’t it look different in different places? It’s a whole planet (we’ll get to that later) and one might expect a planet to have different landscapes. But is it like that for sure? And if it’s the second possibility, then what turned it so dark? (The first would be easy to explain—just as the nights are rather light in SSO compared to OSS, for instance, it’s just made to be better for the players’ eyes.)

The “pink hell”

This is a fact: Pandoria is not Star Stable hell.

It definitely isn’t in Starshine Legacy, and it couldn’t logically be in Star Stable Online. Not only does hell imply something at least loosely based on the concept of hell, which it clearly isn’t, Pandoria is not even, as usually claimed, an evil place.

Pandoria is different. Pandoria is not some sort of underworld, or just a magic dimension, it is actually a planet that could be physically reached, if one had the necessary technology. Even though SSO strayed far from the canon of the old games, and even though the UFO has been ignored by SSE for years, the references to aliens on Jorvik have never really ceased, they were even mentioned in the most recent quests.

Pandoria can also be reached on a magical or spiritual sphere, it is “a place within all of use” (and of course, that could be a sort of internal heaven or hell of mind or soul, or whatever intended here) and its connection to the Soul Riders is on a different level than just some other planet in space.

But Pandoria is not evil. It is, essentially, a different place. It has a different atmosphere (literally, not meaning a different mood, but an actually different atmosphere) and its different sense of scale and realness, etc. is not due to being evil but being simply and plainly a planet that works differently than Earth.

The only definitely Pandorian creatures we ever met in the game (aside from the rays) are Fripp and Ydris. Ydris is a definite example of a being that isn’t intentionally evil, but in every sense alien to our world, and unable to really function in accordance with another world’s nature and physical (as well as, yes, moral) laws.

I know there’s many theories about Fripp actually being evil, maybe because his entire demeanor is so different from his portrayal in the old games and comics, but even those don’t make sense with an “officially” evil Pandoria. If Fripp were evil, then why should he and his followers claim that his home was basically hell? No, no matter if Fripp is good or bad (or different, as he clearly is!) it’s clear that Fripp loves Pandoria, that he longs for Pandoria and that he would never consider it a place of an evil nature.

(In fact, I am quite convinced that Fripp needs Pandoria, and that his exile has a terrible effect on his physical and mental state, and that in order to recover him he might actually need to go there, but that is a different matter.)

The evil in SSO—or supposed evil, for those who love the “the baddies are good and the goodies are bad” theories—came to Pandoria and to Earth/Jorvik from a different planet altogether. Garnok and his Generals are not Pandorian, and they have a terrible influence on Pandoria as well as on Jorvik.

And I have to say, a real problem for me is the effect Pandoria supposedly had on Anne. If it was actually Pandoria. For Evergray, it makes sense, as he is a normal man from Earth, and therefore in a place so physically against his nature, that he simply couldn’t endure in the atmosphere of another planet without long-term damage. (This, again, is why I honestly think that Fripp needs Pandoria, and that Ydris might not be too well of on Jorvik either.)

But Anne is the Sun of Pandoria. All Soulriders are connected to Pandoria, in some ways, deep down, from Pandoria, and so are their horses. But Anne belongs to Pandoria in a whole different way, she is essential to it, Pandoria needs Anne, and Anne naturally belongs there. Of course, she does have a human body, and maybe it was damaged by the atmosphere over a long time (although not nearly as badly as one might expect) and I personally think that DarkCore did much worse to her than the place itself.

But Anne is practically a goddess to Pandorian people. If Pandoria were a “pink hell” then Anne (and Lisa, and Linda, and Alex, and we—and the horses) were evil. Anne would be the Sun of Hell. Which she isn’t—obviously.

But Anne can be negatively effected by the harm done to Pandoria. And of course, physically she is a human of our Earth. That’s absolutely clear. She isn’t a Pandorian, in that sense. But she isn’t unconnected to it either.

Pandorian Problemsolving

I know that SSE have strayed fundamentally from the storyline of Starshine Legacy. But they still use some old pictures, reference old places and plots, and even mention the extraterrestial parts of the game. The observatories still play an important part (they even brought an astronomer and an alien together) and they never really made a clear cut from the old stories.

I don’t see why it should be difficult to put it all together. I mean—I made up all sorts of plausible, interwoven storylines to fill plotholes in the gap between SsL and OSS for an imaginary MMO set on Jorvik before SSO even existed, and before I knew what an MMO is, and I continued to do so after starting to play SSO and could still logically put a lot together with all the new storylines and inconsistancies brought into the game.

It is still perfectly possible for SSE to make sense of it all, to show Pandoria as it truly is—not good or bad, but different, and deeply connected to the Soul Riders—and fit in the old aspects of the stories with the new.

As for Fripp, I know many dislike him—but he, too, is a being of Pandoria, and his concern is to fight a very specific evil (that is, Garnok, and his followers) and to protect Jorvik as well as his actual home, without having much understanding for every personal sensitivity of every single human being he works with, and who belong to a species he simply cannot really understand.

Pandoria is dangerous, but it is also endangered, and the Soul Riders are partly beings of Pandoria, their souls are connected to Pandoria, and the common enemy is of an entirely different nature altogether. Pandoria really shouldn’t be portrayed as safe or cute, but also not as a sort of evil otherworld, but as a connected, but different place of great importance, and with deep connection to the story and its actors, including the good and the bad.

does it make difference to travel to Pandoria by actual space travel rather than through portals/rifts, and if yes, how?

really, what about Fripp’s physical state, and what could bringing him to Pandoria (I know he’s in exile) or bringing him something from Pandoria do to him (e.g. food, medicine, whatever)

what about Pandorian people, more Pandorian people, especially horse people

I still wonder if those Pandorian horsepeople work like Egyptian gods—maybe they don’t have human bodies with horse heads, but can actually appear as humans or horses—who would be seperated into a human and a horse on Earth

Morality-Focused Frameworks Of Discussion As Acts of Control

This is a post in response to a larger conversation I’ve been having with @eshusplayground. I have a perspective that I think would be really relevant to the conversation but I also don’t want to derail the specific focus of the following posts she’s been making recently.

So I’m in the Hellraiser fandom. More specifically, I’m a Pinhead/Kirsty shipper.

For those of you that don’t know, Pinhead is a demonic torturer from hell who’s design is inspired by the BDSM community. Characters who open a magical puzzle box have unknowingly given themselves away to his violent underworld community of eternal torment and depravity. Hellraiser is a film about romantic and sexual horror, and there’s quite a lot in there about abuse and trauma. Kirsty is a traumatized person, and in my personal opinion, very likely a CSA victim.

And I ship these two characters together.

So the subject matter of my particular fandom is extremely intense and niche and complicated to navigate, although YMMV (I have no trouble with this franchise, but I cannot really handle GOT or American Horror Story, for example). After I grew interested in Hellraiser and integrated into it’s fandom, my perspectives about the way we have conversations about villainous characters started to have a major shift.

I often see people have these intense conversations (and arguments) about where a particular character exists on a moral scale, with the subtext (or outright text) that if they tip too far one way or another, they can be rendered unworthy of their own subgroup of fans within their own fandom. People who love those characters or find them shippable are then subject to moral judgements.

So how does one apply such logic to a psychosexual torture demon?

The answer is you can’t.

The frameworks people online use to have these discussions do not make any sense when talking about my fandom. Hellraiser is a dark horror fairytale presenting disturbing, surreal images and behaviors in order to discuss complex and difficult experiences and perspectives. The monsters within it, like Pinhead, are more metaphor than anything.

Now, my follower count is too low and my fandom is too niche for me to really be on the receiving end of a lot of the cruelty that manifests online about the moral validity of the fiction I enjoy. That said, between the anti-kink TERFS and the younger folks involved in purity culture on this site, I can imagine exactly what it would look like. You know what they would look like.

“You’re an Abuse Apologist!”

“You’re an Abuse Fetishist!”

“You’re reinforcing sexism!”

“he’s an irredeemable torturer, you’re probably okay with literal real world rape lmao uwu”

“This is bad kink representation and you’re complicit in the abuse real men do to women because you like this!”

Now, setting aside the fact that the canon lore context of Pinhead involves him having a human soul brainwashed by a monster god to become what he is, and is also in a roundabout sense “redeemed” in canon, I think most people utilizing this kind of framework would assume that I believe Pinhead can be redeemed in the way online Discourse (tm) means it, because that’s how we talk in fandom about the villains we really like.

I do not want to redeem Pinhead. I don’t think he even needs redeeming. I don’t even see value in that conversation at all. Redemption is not a concept that makes sense for what he is, or what he could become as a character. The framework of Pinhead as a Real-World-Equivalent Human Male Abuser who Cannot Be Redeemed From His Actions would inevitably dominate all conversation, regardless of the fact that it is inherently incorrect and detrimental to real, robust literary analysis of the narrative he exists within and how brilliantly it actually interacts with male on female abuse as a subject. By nature of it’s gross oversimplification and misrepresentation, It ruins the potential for greater, more nuanced and complex conversations.

And that’s the thing: my engagement with this particular story and it’s characters has a lot to do with the potential in the narrative to examine how trauma interacts with love, desire and gender politics. Hellraiser has a very unique way of exploring that kind of subject through a storytelling aesthetic that appeals to me (horror/fairytale, gothic romance, etc).

This is about to get personal, so strap the fuck in.

I am the victim of gendered abuse, in that I had an emotionally abusive step father and sexism was absolutely a factor in why that manifested the way it did. I am also a second hand victim of gendered abuse, in that my biological father was a serial stalker and rapist, and other male abusers (or just self-centered family members) caused severe emotional destabilization in my childhood. I grew up viewing adult men as unstable, selfish children. My family endured a lot, and I came to resent the men in my mother’ life for not taking on the role of protector and nurturer when she needed them most. I had discovered the great lie of traditional masculinity: in the face of real crisis, grown men were not protectors. They did not hold together the domestic space. They abused or faltered and abandoned us. This was a repeated pattern among several men in different roles. I was often left picking up all the pieces, taking on roles as a child that these men could not. I had to have strength they did not.

My experience of desire for romantic intimacy with men and men in roles of stable, nurturing authority now inherently involves a jumbled emotional soup of fear, pain, and a deep longing that comes from a place of feminine vulnerability, a desire to be taken care of instead of being the caretaker.

The narrative of Hellraiser pushes a lot of buttons for me. It speaks to my own trauma experiences in a very specific way. In an effort to further that conversation, I’m trying to create a piece of art (a fic) inspired by the deeply personal feelings this film gives me.

For me, Pinhead represents the Jungian shadow masculine, a simultaneous mix of fear and desire, the potential for suffering and pleasure, and everything in between. These experiences are inherently intertwined for me. And Kirsty’s experiences mirror many of my own.

In other words, in order for me to get out of Hellraiser what I get out of Hellraiser, Pinhead has to be exactly what he is, and everything that he is. Which includes monstrosity. Which includes the potential for change. His place in the narrative must fully, truly embody this conversation I need to have with masculinity, which inherently involves painful, scary things.

Anybody demanding that I either denounce my interest in him as morally offensive because he’s a monster in the full sense of the word (and not just the aesthetic one like what is currently trending in Monster Boyfriend fandom), or force a traditional redemption arc upon him as if he were a real life human person who must repent for his real life sins, are essentially saying that I am not allowed to engage with this work of fiction in a way that is transformative for me. And that’s very unfortunate, because honestly, I think my perspective is so much more dynamic and has so much more to offer.

This is not just about basic catharsis. This is not even a power fantasy about emotionally transforming a powerful (white) dude, or “bad boy” fantasies, both standard arguments for villain stanning that feels like it has never truly represented me or the complexity of my experiences and interests. This is a full-on conversation and act of self expression I want to have through art about the experience of fear and trauma when dealing with men as a woman who desires men.

And I don’t think a person has to be traumatized in order to want to engage with this type of fiction. I want to be clear that my experience is not a justification for my interest (I do not need to justify myself), it is an example of a perspective that gets erased by the framework of these conversations.

To me, the framework of moral validity for enjoying fictional villains and monsters and whatever you please feels incredibly stifling to the complex, dynamic ideas and analysis that I want to engage in, because I, and many people I know, are consistently pressured to structure their thoughts with this framework as the only acceptable baseline of discussion. This is so ubiquitous that when people I’ve known have tried to engage in ways that diverge from that framework, the responses they get are outright confused or direct the conversation right back to the original framework they tried to avoid. Complex conversation gets steamrolled.

Somewhere in the conversation we were all having about acknowledging and discussing abuse and oppression, and acknowledging troubling patterns in media which reinforce the normalization of abuse and opression, some people decided that there was a very serious moral discussion to be had regarding the mere act of liking things which involve dark subject matter and complex, or even monstrous characters. They now argue that there are very clear cut, simple moral frameworks for A) telling stories and B) enjoying stories, and most importantly, that this moral framework is a valid justification for the social treatment and silencing of certain people.

A framework, by the way, which I think is actually not functionally a framework, because like the toxic American fundamentalist christian groups it’s thinking is structured from, it does not account for the vastly diverse moral landscape within it’s own space. There is no objectively consistent body of knowledge anybody is working from, because morals are derived from the human experience, which is inherently subjective.

Interestingly, no where does this have more of an impact than with marginalized people, and people like me, who want to express something deeper and more meaningful in the conversation about abuse and oppression than what this framework really offers us. To be honest, The more I see this kind of conversation making the rounds, the clearer it becomes that it’s a means of control and power game playing. It’s not about morality, but about how morality can be leveraged in order to silence truly diverse and nuanced perspectives and uphold people’s sense of self-comfort. It is a means of supplanting more convenient and easily digestible understandings of these highly complex subjects that require more intensive, thoughtful engagement, especially when it gets challenging. This kind of rhetoric absolves people of making room for complex and diverse experiences, and reinforces an (at face-value) easy to follow set of moral rules of how we are all allowed to think and feel.

The implication of all of this is that if we all adhere to the One True (alleged) Moral Framework of Fandom Engagement, then we will somehow come out on the other side with all the Good People having a Great Time having Squeaky Clean Fun. And I don’t think I should have to tell you at this point how stifling and disturbing the implications of that kind of mentality really are.

 Quite frankly, I think a lot of us are very tired of constantly speaking on other people’s terms.

In the first cold hours of a new December morning, Taylor Swift once again revealed herself to be the primary antagonist in my hero’s journey. Weary and woebegone as I am, I will not waste strength on any attempt to deny that this latest attack has knocked me off balance, but I believe it is important that I—we, really, the lot of us who have been bloodied pitiably beneath this most brutal show of force—rebound immediately into a defensive posture so that there might be any hope at all for survival. Taylor’s second pandemic album will be released at midnight tonight, so I guess Shakespeare and his little “play” about elder abuse can get fucked after all. The album is called evermore. It was hubris, I can see in retrospect, which led me to tempt my enemy by writing all these words about her on this, the week of her birthday, knowing as I do that Taylor is one of those especially dangerous adults who make a big deal about both birthdays and lucky numbers. Icarus is my name now, covered in melted wax and tumbling to the sea. So as to steel ourselves for these horrors yet to come, I offer now, with not arrogance but the faith of the foolhardy, my best conjecture as to the content of each detestable track. 

willow - Could be about a tree. Could be about a girl. More likely it is both somehow, which is extremely pervy, and not just because that’s part of the plot of the unspeakably cursed The Raven Cycle novels, which I, a full blown adult with, generally speaking, normal brain function, voluntarily read for the first time this summer because some of us, ma’am, used the pandemic for activities that hurt only ourselves, not others. Well, happy holidays, tree fuckers.

champagne problems - Whatever this is, know that I will be considering it a work after Fall Out Boy’s “Champagne for My Real Friends, Real Pain for My Sham Friends” and I’ll be right to do so and many people will say as much admiringly and they’ll smile at me with pride and doff their caps as I go.

gold rush - If this song is anything but a loving, comprehensive summation of the children’s novel DEAR AMERICA Seeds of Hope: The Gold Rush Diary of Susanna Fairchild then I’m going to walk directly out of my home and, deadly virus be damned, keep walking until I’ve entered Taylor Swift’s instead, at which point I will begin to scream out a litany of complaints at the very top of my voice, ceasing only when her security team kills me or we fall in love.

tis the damn season - Worst case scenario this is a sad Christmas song (the best kind of Christmas song) and it devastates me in the most degrading way possible. Best case scenario it’s really bad and dumb and I can live without pain.

tolerate it - Many possibilities here. Could be about white-knuckling it through a period of depression, or a breakup. Most obviously, it could be about COVID-19 lockdowns keeping us trapped in our homes, disconnected from loved ones, going slow-brained and strange, bowls piling up, and suddenly so desperate for human interaction that even memories of having drinks with somebody from Hinge who quoted Friends twice in an hour are tantalizing in comparison to the touch-starved dreamstate of staying indoors... But I kinda feel like this is Taylor replying “COPE” from on high to my tweets about how I would rather be boiled alive than have to face the existence of this record.

no body, no crime (feat. Haim) - What would be very good is if this is a homosexual romp about Taylor Swift and the one hot Haim guitar girl with the really gay energy doing a murder together a la “Somethin’ Bad” by Miranda Lambert with Carrie Underwood, but honestly, it is probably another song about Gone Girl.

happiness - Impossible to speak on this since, thanks to Taylor Swift, happiness is something with which I have no familiarity. 

dorothea - Have seen chirping on the odious bird application about how perhaps this song title suggests that Taylor has written a song about Middlemarch, titling it for Dorothea Brooke, but I reject this because it implies that Taylor has read Middlemarch, which is a premise I cannot accept. Whether this refusal is out of self-preservation, being unwilling and in fact unable to face a world where Taylor Swift read and was moved to creation by the novel which was my most essential friend the summer I got dumped by a guy who I still had to work feet away from in a candle factory for another month, and about which Emily Dickinson (Emily Dickinson whose birthday it happens to be today, which isn’t to say that this means anything about anything. I am simply trying to batten down all hatches literally and spiritually in light of having been had once again by this numerology obsessed demon) once wrote "What do I think of Middlemarch? What do I think of glory.” or because I just at my core do not believe that Taylor has read a single book since Gone Girl I couldn’t possibly say.

coney island (feat. The National) : Some ungodly americana ass bullshit that is going to ruin my life. The thought of holy terror shaped like a horse girl Taylor Swift and trickster nymph in the body of a tax accountant Matt Berninger, two individuals I have allowed, separately, to cause me grievous psychic harm, having even the barest amount of one to one contact, even digitally, has made me want to peel all my skin off and put it back on flipped inside out so that I might, when I look in the mirror, see a version of myself which approximates how I feel.

ivy - Another song for the plant lesbians. That’s fine, and I’m happy for that community, but what I want to know, looking at this growing pile of songs named after women, is where, Taylor, is the song about loudmouth queen Inez, legendary gossip and, for my money, the star of folklore?  

cowboy like me - Putting it as mildly as humanly possible, to slit my throat would be less cruel. I am drawing a straight line from me writing illegible sequels to perfect film An American Tail: Fievel Goes West (itself a sequel) in crayon as a toddler, to Paula Cole’s “Where Have All the Cowboys Gone?” on the radio in my mom’s two door Honda, to me everyday after school in third grade changing into the cowboy costume my godmother bought, to me at fourteen internalizing a sense of righteous indignation that would take years to even begin to outgrow when Crash beat Brokeback Mountain for Best Picture, to the winter I dropped half my classes out of fear and sickness and read paperback westerns on the twenty third floor of the college library for tens of hours at a go, to the profoundly gay episode of Supernatural called “Tombstone” which is, yes, named for the profoundly gay cowboy film Tombstone, to the inspired and revitalizing pause in “Space Cowboy” by Kacey Musgraves where she’s like, “You can have your space........ cowboy”, to Mitski’s Be the Cowboy, to the perfect boygenius cover of certified classic “Cowboy Take Me Away”, to whatever the hell this is going to be.That line is not to make a point at all. It’s just that there is a line and beside it there is me, incapacitated.

long story short - Just like all the other times anyone has ever invoked this phrase in the entire history of human beings expressing themselves with language, it is going to be a huge lie, because this woman never shuts up.

marjorie - After all that Taylor has put me through over the years, she should have at least named one of these wretched things “ellen” after my dead Sagittarian grandmother, whose birthday is tomorrow, December 11th, which is again, the release date of Taylor Swift’s second album in sixth months, but it’s probably for the best that she didn’t because you simpletons would immediately think it was an homage to George Bush’s friend Dory the fish, and therefore gay, regardless of the actual text of the song, and it’d be the “betty” massacre all over again. That being said, this is almost assuredly another horny song about some mid-century white lady. Only days ago Taylor was telling Entertainment Weekly that she’s been watching a lot of movies in quarantine, and while she didn’t name 1958’s Marjorie Morningstar starring Natalie Wood, I wouldn’t put it past her.

closure - God, I hope this one is another Kaylor classic so we can all act like complete raving lunatics online from the confines of our own plague quarters for a few days. It’s been a hard year.

Facts about me:

I go by the name Donn on this blog (for safety reasons I won’t be sharing my actual or preferred name anywhere on this blog, sorry!)

I chose the name Donn because of the name coming from the Celtic god of dead souls (I’m a Celtic witch by blood so I thought it’d be fitting)

My preferred pronouns when I write are she/they (leaning towards she atm because of some personal issues I deal with irl, but irl I prefer they/them more strictly… does that make any sense?)

Anyways, I’m 18+ and I very much prefer my viewers to be 18+ ONLY because of the NSFW content I post… and I also don’t want to influence anyone that impressionable cuz I have a kinda fucked up mindset atm…

“So, no crosses and all that crap either?” the lieutenant asked, maneuvering to their exit off the highway.  

“Well, actually,” Alois started, until Fei leaned forward abruptly to change the channel on the radio.

“Doesn’t this thing get any good music?” she asked, flicking from one station to the next.  When she found something she liked, she sat back again. “There we go, something more energetic.”

Zbrozek demonstrated what he thought of her choice by turning the radio off.

“You were saying, doctor?” he asked, glancing sidelong at Alois.  

Alois held his ribcage, confused.  After a furtive glance back at Fei, he said, “No, you’re right.  We can toss most of that out the window.”

“So, what do we have?” the lieutenant was obviously exasperated, his ring finger tapping repeatedly on the steering wheel.

“A common thread,” Fei answered. “All of the victims lurked on the same ‘hook up’ site, ‘Glamr.’” She paused for effect, then read the tagline for the app: “Have a fairy tale romance, right in your own neighborhood.” After making a retching noise, she continued, “There’s an app as well… what Fae would be stupid enough to put themselves on an app that tracks their location?”

Sheila turned her gaze out the window to hide her sudden blush.

“It isn’t the Fae that are being killed,” Zbrozek began.

“Not that we’re investigating, anyway,” Fei cut in.

“Stop it,” the lieutenant said, glancing at her in the rear-view mirror.

“Stop what, caring about my people?” the apsara glared at him, mouth a thin, angry line.

“Mom and dad are arguing again, Red,” Whip sobbed from the back, trying to hug Sheila from behind. “Make them stop!”  She snickered at his theatrics, patting his hand in false comfort.  Gods, he was soft.

“Shall we assume, then,” the doctor jumped in, “That in this case the baobhan is hunting using the app, targeting single males?”

Another tense moment between the lieutenant and Fei passed, before she dropped her eyes to her laptop.

“Yeah. Swims, to be exact.”

“I like to swim,” Whip said, putting his chin on the back of Sheila’s seat so he could comment. “Not a lot of good places to swim without chlorine in Colorado, though.”

“Single white hetero males,” Fei corrected him with a sigh.

“Chlorine is bad for the fur,” the pooka confided in the satyr, giving her a very serious nod.

“Collaborate with Brice back at HQ to pull the information you need,” the lieutenant ordered, reminding Sheila of her missed opportunity to sneak a whiff of the technician.  The two ‘non-essential’ humans had been left behind for their own safety, but she was pretty sure it had more to do with Zbrozek not being able to handle the crew he had already.  They were supposed to meet another Fae in Denver.  The circus was going three rings big, and the ringmaster was getting balder by the minute.

 The administration building for the Denver police was a rather daunting edifice made of concrete and glass.  No expense had been spared in creating the atmosphere that if you were here, and you didn’t belong, you’d royally messed up.  To Sheila, it looked like building blocks stacked on top of each other by a creatively stunted ten-year-old.

Zbrozek tapped his ring finger on the window after closing the Fae in the car. Whipple wriggled his way to the front seat to hit the button, lowering all the windows a crack.

“The greenhouse effect can kill a pet!  Crack your windows!”

“So, what you’re saying is,” her eyes narrowed, lifting her feet up to kneel on the seat, “That he wasn’t ‘in charge’ before?”

Fei rested back on her heels, returning his gaze for a long moment before looking out the window. She nodded a couple times, pulling on her headphones.

The pooka flashed Sheila a full grin of sharpened teeth, eyebrows waggling, “Want to pet me some more?”

“I didn’t pet you in the first place.” It was hard to accomplish the appropriate offended look when his tail was thrashing like that.

“Fuck me,” Fei dropped her headphones in her lap, hands going to her chest defensively.

“Ha!” Whip burst out, “Nymph!”

“Fuck off,” she retorted, glaring at him while pointing out the window.  As he wriggled his way into a closer seat, Sheila watched the men she was indicating; her heart began to race.

To the human world, the four men were just three police officers escorting a sharply dressed man carrying a briefcase.  To the Folk in the car, the clues were obvious as the buildings that loomed over them.  The metallic shields on their left breasts appeared normal, unless one noted the black symbol at the center.  The image, centered inside of a gold star, was reflected on the case as well, but larger. The Fae always noted that symbol.

“Iron Cross,” Whip exhaled the name. “We are so screwed.”  

It wasn’t until the men had entered the building through the same door Zbrozek and Alois used that the three finally breathed again.  A cold chill ran down Sheila’s back, mimicked in the nearby pooka’s fur.  Reaching a hand up, she began smoothing it out with slow strokes.

“I have to believe,” she said, watching Fei’s face, “That they are here because of the murders, not for us.”

“Are you really that naïve?” the girl gave her usual sneer. “I knew trust fund babies were sheltered, but surely you had wifi in your bunker?”

“Who pissed in your cheerios?” Whipple came to rest between the two front seats, looking back at them. “I agree with Red.  We’re on the same side of the law, this time.”

The apsara slumped backwards into the seat, kicking her feet out.

“There has never been an interaction between any Fae and the Iron Cross that didn’t end in bloodshed.  If they kill you, they don’t even have to pretend it was an accident.  You were guilty because you’re not human.  Surely, even you two idiots can understand that?”

Sheila unclenched her fists, not even realizing she’d clenched them, then rubbed her fingers into the divots her nails created.

“Your attitude is what will get us murdered,” she muttered, smoothing Whip’s fur again.

A knock on the window behind Fei turned whatever retort she had planned into a scream.  Her body impacted against the satyr’s side as she launched herself away from the car door, twisting her tiny body in mid-dive to face her attacker.  Her hands came up, fists clenching around visible currents of air. Whipple’s quickness saved the day, pushing her hands to point at the back of the truck just before she unleashed her power.  

Glass flew outward as the rear window shattered.  The debris didn’t land immediately however, caught up in the miniature whirlwinds Fei had unleashed.  After a few breath’s time, it all fell like hail on a car nearly a block from where it had started.

Outside the vehicle, a thin man rose, nonplussed by the near miss of the apsara’s gift.  He was tall, much taller than the lieutenant, so had to bend down to gaze into the car. Gaunt would have described him, but Sheila felt somehow ‘hollow’ explained better.  His irises looked like the yolk in over-easy eggs, his fingernails like broken potato chips.

His voice drifted in through the crack in the window, bringing with it the scent of mold.

“Bad time?”

 Mortimer, the ghoulish man who’d turned Fei into an air cannon, had claimed the front passenger seat, and was staring out the window blankly.  He’d been sent to the SUV by Zbrozek, with instructions to introduce himself.  

After giving the pooka a rather scathing look for opening the door for the ghoul, both girls sat quiet.  Fei remained next to Sheila in the middle of the back seat, staring at the side of the new man’s face.  The satyr was quietly glad for the company.  She found the citrus scent under the smell of lilies on the apsara’s skin distracted her from the ‘graveyard’ odor of their new colleague.

“Problem?”

Mortimer’s voice cracked in the middle of the word, but still managed to startle all three Fae.

“I, for one, was wondering if you are a slow zombie, like the classic Romero ones, or if you can run like the current trend in wildcat zombies?” Whip leaned on the driver-side door, eyes wide with wonder, rather than the dread the girls shared.

“I don’t run,” came the raspy reply, “Death catches us all.”

“Seriously?” Fei spurted, kicking the back of the pooka’s seat.  She suddenly seemed to find even Sheila’s nearness upsetting, throwing herself back to her own side of the car. “So many Folk in the world, and I’m teamed up with the comedy relief.”

He took his gaze off the front window and turned it on her, his neck popping loudly in the car as he did so.

“Sluagh.” As soon as he uttered the word, the other three in the car curled the fingers of their right hand, thumbs sticking out between middle and index fingers. Almost in sync they shook this sign in the air, on the third shake releasing their hands like tossing away something sticky.  

Before getting involved with the BNC, Sheila had little contact with Celtic Fae, so her understanding of who they were was limited to common knowledge. She did know the sluagh were dead creatures that would steal your soul if you let them.  They’d been frontline terrors during the Crusades. The sight of them flying into battle in a flock of blackbirds had sent their mortal opponents fleeing in terror.

The corners of Mortimer’s mouth curled upwards, his own right hand lifting to expose a thin leather band tied tightly around his wrist.  On top, bottom, and both sides a small metal bead could be seen.

“Geas binding,” he explained.  

Even though they all scowled in disgust at the extreme measures, they also relaxed. “I can’t imagine you’d be very useful, then.” Fei spent a moment adjusting the hem of her dress until it rested just-so. “What good is a powerless dead guy?”

There was no response from the corpse in question, who resumed looking out the front window.

“Oh, for crying out loud!” Came a sudden roar from the parking lot outside. “I can’t even leave you alone for ten fucking minutes?”

 After surveying the damage, as well as spending more than a few minutes complaining about the cost to fix the window, Zbrozek updated them on the situation.

“The detectives here did most of the work for us,” he began, ousting the pooka to the far back again.  With Alois pushing himself into the seat next to Sheila, Fei grumbled something hateful before hopping into the back with Whip.

“I’m glad I spent so much time doing research then,” she complained. “I could have been updating my blogosphere…”

“Of course, I did.”

“Great.  We’re looking for a redhead.”

“Look closer, Fei,” the lieutenant held the phone out further, so the girl could see.

“Mirrors don’t lie,” Mortimer murmured from the front seat.

He had it right.  Behind the woman, caught in the angle George had set, was her face in a mirror.  As far as they could tell, it was a simple restaurant mirror, not silvered, but it did the trick.  Without it, she was probably beautiful.  Catching her in the reflection revealed her otherworldly beauty. There were depths to her eyes that demanded blissful staring, and the arch of her cheekbones begged for a lingering touch.  Most humans would ignore that half-glimpse of the truth, considering it just a trick of the light.  The Fae knew better.

“Right.  Her name is April Cassidy, or ‘Summerlove87’ on Glamr.  Apparently, all the victims had private conversations with her before they died.  They are getting a warrant to pull those messages from the dating service, but we have enough proof to bring her in.”

“That’s enough evidence to bring in a human,” Sheila spoke up, sitting straighter in her seat. “I’m surprised they didn’t drag her in the moment her face was found.”

“Mrs. Cassidy is an executive for a company named ‘Allied Manufacturers Global,’ or AMG. As far as they know, April is out on maternity leave,” Zbrozek paused a moment to let that sink in. “They spoke to her assistant, who is quite positive that her boss is a human.”

“That explains a lot,” Alois broke in, leaning a bit to see the lieutenants face better. “I was wondering why there was a sudden rash of these attacks.  Surely, we would have heard of men losing blood, particularly with all the media around Fae powers?”

“I was escorted out of a store when the total didn’t ‘seem right’ to the cashier,” Sheila shared. “The manager accused me of ‘glamouring’ the register.”

“Which, as we know, you cannot do,” Alois continued. “I must assume, given the information provided, that usually they feed discretely from their lovers. Few would investigate a hickey, for example.”

“Babies are starving beasts,” Mortimer whispered.

“Exactly.”

I highly doubt anybody will read this, and I don't necessarily care if anybody does or not, but I just need somewhere to vent and talking to my friend didn't really help.

I was diagnosed with severe depression, generalized anxiety, and ptsd at the age of 13. The summer leading up to high-school was one of the most stressful times of my life, and those hardships soon made me realize how abusive my mother was, and would become. Before then, we'd have typical mother-daughter arguments, but nothing impactful enough to ever damage our relationship. That changed drastically during that summer, when she began to lash out at me every time I expressed an insecurity or even considered shedding a tear. Instead of comforting me, she'd yell at me and invalidate my feelings. Obviously this only worsened my condition, and I'd find myself crying more often than not, and panic attacks/breakdowns had become my norm.

After a few months, she finally decided to send me to therapy and attending was one of the best things I'd ever done. I finally had someone validating my mental illnesses and truly listening to me, but because my mom didn't see much improvement within as little as six months, the abuse began once again. She'd constantly threaten to take me out of therapy, or accuse me of bad-mouthing her to my therapist. Whenever I'd choose to stick up for myself, she'd call me an array of names such as: selfish, lazy, bitch, etc. Rather quickly I began to resent her, and recognizing her true colors made me want to do anything but trust her.

This continued for the next two years, until I was 16 (going onto 17). She was the cause of the worst day of my life, in which her and my biological brother mentally and emotionally abused me for nearly an hour. I had decided to finally express my feelings to my mother in a letter, saying how terrible she makes me feel, and it wasn't all-too surprsinging to hear her lashing out only minutes later about it. She watched as I stood in the doorway of her room and shook in fear, and told me that she no longer loves me. She said I disgusted her, should be sent to a mental institution, and will need to find a place to live because she no longer wants me. Empty threats are her forte, it's a defense mechanism and her way of forcing me into submission and compliance rather than addressing the actual problem, but in the moment I couldn't have possibly known she didn't mean those things. That was the first time I ever wanted to genuinely kill myself, and I was moments away from swallowing a whole bottle of pills. If it weren't for my brother (not biological, I met him a few years back and he's been a better brother than my actual one) talking to me on FaceTime and calming me down, I'm not sure I'd still be here today. I recorded nearly the entire thing, her and my biological brother abusing me, and to this day I still haven't listened back to it because I just can't. Simply writing about that day brings me to tears, let alone talking or hearing about it. I recorded it in case I needed to take it to authorities to report my mother for child neglect and abuse, which was a serious consideration. For months after that incident I thought about reporting her, whether it be to my school or the authorities, just to get away from her, but ultimately I decided not to. Being taken out of my home and placed in a foster care seemed much more terrifying, and at least the abuse was familiar. Plus, my one cat, Angel, is my soulmate and I refuse to ever leave her. Even in this moment, I know for a fact that I could not live without her. I would impulsively end my life if I lost her now, and especially then. She's sitting next to me as I type this; she is my anchor.

After that day, it was blatant that my mother and I's relationship would never be the same. She eventually apologized in a therapy session where I had admitted that I couldn't wait to get away from her, and presumably that broke her heart because she bursted into tears. I did have some hope that maybe we could get somewhere, but deep down I knew I could never forgive her for that day as long as I lived with her. Things seemed to be okay for a little while, but then I graduated from high school this past May, and once again things worsened. My depression basically leaves me bedridden most days, and my anxiety prevents me from doing simple things like getting a job or my license. Therapy helps, and I tried five different medications but none of them made a difference, so I abandoned that path. I've made a lot of progress, such as returning to public school in 11th grade when I had previously isolated myself to online schooling. I used to not shower for days, not brush my teeth or ever leave my room, and now I take care of my hygiene on a daily basis. I move around more; I am slowly (very slowly) getting better. But that isn't enough for my mother, and so she's been down my throat about getting a job. I've had multiple conversations with her explaining how difficult it is for me, and that I'm truly trying, and maybe in the moment she listens but it never actually sticks. The threats have returned, whether it's about her putting a bullet in her head because she's tired of everything, or me getting kicked out because I don't contribute. I understand that I am 18 and therefore carry more responsibility than a minor, but the circumstances are drastically different for a person like me. Regardless, I don't want to blab on with excuses, so I'll get to today.

I confronted her about money she had technically stolen from me ($95), and I already knew it wouldn't go down well. My heart was in my stomach the entire day, and when I finally mentioned it, she lost it. I have been diagnosed with ptsd, but she only thinks it's in relation to a specific event that happened with another person. She doesn't know that I also experience it with her, and the moment she raises her voice, my heart quickens, tears threaten to spill, and in that moment I literally want to die. I walk on eggshells with her because I want to avoid setting her off; it affects me terribly. Anyways, instead of handling the situation like adults, she brought up me not having a job again and said I have until January 1st to get a job or else she's kicking me out. It's December 15th, and the holidays are just around the corner. On top of that, I do not have my license and my permit needs to be renewed, but in order to do so I need her to take me to the DMV. I don't have friends in real life due to my years of depression and isolation, so I am completely alone and trapped. Talking to people only helps so much, because at the end of the day I am still stuck with her.

I do not love my mother anymore. It truly hurts to say that, and even I want to doubt that I mean it, but it is simply the truth. I once loved her, and I still care about her life, but I no longer view her as a real mother-figure. She's a woman who gave birth to me and raised me, but not a woman that ever taught me anything. Not a woman that set boundaries, that allowed me to confide in her, or that consoled and validated me. She knows how to physically care for a kid, she knows how to buy them gifts, but she doesn't know any other love language and as a result, she does not love her child in the way that she needs. Talking to her is pointless, having my therapist talk to her is also pointless, this is just who she is. My mother is a manipulator and emotional abuser. She is not a good person, and I cannot wait for the day that I get away from her. I want nothing more than to run far away from here and never see or talk to her again, but clearly that is not realistic. I try and hold hope for the day that I move out, but as a college student, that will be years from now. I can not afford to live on campus, nor can I emotionally afford to be separated from Angel for months at a time. I truly am trapped, and I can't imagine that I'll live past my college graduation if things remain the same. Sometimes death seems like the only escape from her.

I didn't go into details/specifics of certain events or things she's said/done simply because anybody could read this. Police have been involved in one specific situation and it led to nothing; the case was closed. I'm sure that things don't seem that bad in the way that I've described them, but I wouldn't wish my situation on anybody; no matter how awful people can be. I hate that I'm pitying myself, but god do I wish I didn't suffer from mental illnesses so that I could function like a normal human being. I could get a job, get my license, actually have friends and want to hang out with them. My mom wouldn't lash out as much, and it'd be so much easier for me to just get the fuck out of here. If I could, I would run away to another state to live with a friend, as long as I could bring Angel. I wish I could live with my brother (the one I met a few years ago online) but he's still living with his parents and it wouldn't be ideal/possible.

I try not to allow room in my heart for hate, but how I feel about my mother is on the border of hatred.

I forgot to mention that I don't have any other family, because we've cut off contact from them over a year ago due to a few really terrible issues. My entire family on my mothers side are disgusting (this is factual, it isn't my mother making things up) and my father isn't in my life so I don't have his family.

I have.. no one.
