Hey, I've been thinking about reading all for the game but I really don't know if it would be my kind of books. Would you like to try to convince me? What is it about? (themes, vibes, similar books...) (the synopsis doesn't really tell me anything)

Hi okay! I’m going to preface this entire thing with read the content warnings before you decide if you want to continue. Here is a list of all the content warnings and here is a spoiler free list.

If you have read the warnings and still would like to proceed, here are some of my favorite things and reasons id give for why you should read it.

I’m listing a few none content reasons that I think they are good. These are perks not directly relating to the books and the reading of them.

Some non-book content reasons to read

I think this would be a good plus for you: I would personally lump Neil Josten in with the Percy Jackson type of main character. Both are unreliable narrators who are sarcastic, unaware of their own abilities, and also self aware of their own idiocy (affectionate). Plus, oblivious as hell.

First major point is that getting the books is cheap, even if you want the audiobook. They are very cheap on kindle. Like I’m talking about The Foxhole Court is free, then The Raven King and The King’s Men are $0.99 USD each. (And, if you like audiobooks, you can add the audiobooks onto that for $7.49 USD each). So they’d total out to about $1.98 USD for all three books on Kindle, and if you did audiobooks too it’d be around $25 USD for all three. (You could also get the audiobooks later, the discount for it on audible works even after initial purchase).

Second, the fan content is exceptional. This is actually the thing that made me finally just go ahead and read them. The fan art? The fan fiction? Fuck its fantastic. I may be biased as a huge fan of the series but I truly think the overall quality of the fan content in the aftg fandom is better than a lot of other fandoms. It’s so damn good. And if you decide to read and want to find fanfiction after, I have plentyyyy of recs I could give you.

^ along with that, I have found so much awesome merch. My aftg merch collection brings me great joy every time I look at it.

ACTUAL CONTENT

I’m going to get into this, and if you have questions before you read or while you read (should you choose to do so), my DMs are open. I have read this series sooo many times, I can probably answer a lot of them.

Here is an explanation I would give, I will try to be spoiler free but I apologize if I give a bit too much away. I will also try to keep it short, but if you want more in depth or are okay with spoilers, again, let me know and id be happy to go more in depth. This isn’t a very polished explanation, I wrote this after taking my meds. Please excuse errors.

Anyways. Neil Josten is an Exy player (Exy is described as, “a bastard sport, an evolved sort of lacrosse on a soccer-sized court with the violence of ice hockey.”) The plot of the story is that he is on the run from his father, and he ends up in Arizona in a high school his senior year. He plays Exy to have something to do, and he ends up catching the eye of Kevin Day (who he met before leaving). One thing leads to another and they end up on the same team. The old team that Kevin Day was on was run by the Moriyamas, who are part of the yakuza, and they are obsessed with getting Kevin back. So a huge aspect of the plot is everyone trying to protect him from them, and Neil is trying to not have his real identity discovered. In his situation, if anyone finds out who he is, he is a dead man because his serial killer father will kill him so he is trying his best to stay alive while finding a place among the Foxes (the team he joins) for as long as he has.

There is a canon queer romance, and there are numerous canon queer characters. There are numerous gay characters, as well as a demisexual character. Though to make it clear, the romance is slow burn. Like since we are from Neil’s pov, it might seem kind of sudden but it is mostly because he is oblivious and doesn’t notice a lot of his surroundings.

But! I love this series so much. I love it, but if you start reading and end up not liking it/find it too much, that is totally fine. The series isn’t for everyone, and the triggers along could be enough to not want to read. Plus! If you have anything you specifically want to skip content wise, message me. I can tell you where to skip + a summary of what you skipped. I did this for a friend of mine on a specific chapter that was just too much for them.

help i am once again having to make Choices

so i discovered canva today, and now i really want to make little template thingies for sharing some of my projects in image format. problem. i overthink fonts

pls... help, which do you guys think would work best??? also this isn't for a text body font, these choices are a bit too flashy for that vv info about serpent's quest in the readmore below for vibe-matching (also if you have suggestions for a different font entirely, feel free to add)

serpent's quest is a high fantasy solarpunk isekai where every person has a reason for not wanting to go home, whether it be that the only thing they can return to is a destroyed planet, a family that was happy to see them go, and a family that never knew who they really were, for whatever their reason, they don't care if this is their last stop. and why would they want to leave? this beautiful land they've found themselves in, saonkaya, looks like one they'd only ever seen in the old art. the flowers are neverending, the creatures reach the clouds, and the towns are full of wonder. yes, there are monsters here, but isn't that just how these things go? and besides, what are monsters in the face of magic? let's explore this world together, and all the secrets it holds, and watch foe turn to tentative friend, as whispers of the new world's death thrum, and a serpent creature from the stars above constricts the protagonist, trying to pull him into it's carefully plotted path to return it to power. mankind needs to be pulled down from the sky, it says. and maybe it's right. even more information since i kinda started rambling below haha

for wolf, this world is still to be feared. he doesn't want to leave this place, but he's not cut out for it yet either. maybe it was the fact he nearly died on his first day, that tends to damper your mood. healing, it turns out, costs money, money he doesn't have. no money, no id, and no idea about where he's at. he's got magic now, but he can't really figure it out, and it doesn't seem to be able to protect him or fight anything, it just whispers in the background, concepts of danger, which might be helpful, if it told him where it came from.

but wolf decides to make the most of it, since he was finally able to escape the one place he needed to. and even though money is going to be a challenge to come by (and he's already starting his new life with debt) he finds people at his side, not really... companions. he doesn't want to keep people around like that, but, they'll work together, and life will be easier for it. they can discover the wonderful things about this world together, and maybe wolf will be able to compensate for his underwhelming magic with some cool items. just because he starts rough, doesn't mean he can't make things better with the right tools, right?

unfortunately, on his little adventures, he stirs a snake's nest. with the eyes of an imprisoned god now on him, he finds his choices are no longer entirely his own. something is moving things into place for him, locking down his other paths, until he only has one path forward, and even if its one he'd wanted, he now feels the eyes on the back of his head, and knows he's doing exactly what it wants. it's just waiting. waiting for him to keep doing it's will. and that pisses wolf off.

this is going to be long, bear with me. so, does yang's skin look yellow in the top two photos? when i had first finished these pictures yang looked fine, imo. i wanted her to be more tan (closer to what im going for with her dad's skin tone) but shifting from my ipad to my computer made me re-evaluate. so i shifted her skin tone to that of the bottom two pictures, that look a bit better to me. it could be that im simply seeing the picture with new eyes, i stopped looking at the piece for a while. but id like opinions on it. okay, on to the outfits.

i took quite a bit of inspiration from an old concept art for the vol 1 look, where yang was wearing a tan jacket. i really like the dark brown on her canon look, i feel like it makes the yellows on her pop a lot, but i wanted to try the tan look with some darker boarder colors on the jacket.

the vol 2 alternate outfit is, imo, 10 outta 10 no notes

her dance outfit...i tried for a very light yellow cheongsam inspired dress (took inspo from some wedding shops i found online) and originally i was gonna give her a dragon design. she is a sunny little dragon after all. but i didnt like any of the dragons i drew, so i did this pattern inspired by some floral designs i found.

tbh i wasnt sure what i wanted to do with the vol 4 - 6 outfit. i always found it kind of boring tbh. i tried the mismatched pant legs and put the long orange sock back because i feel like part of yang was working on regaining some part of herself. i never liked the long...flaps she had so i didnt add them. i did another variant with a duller brown jacket (its leather in my head) cause shes still struggling.

this is my 3rd fav outfit for yang in canon and i didnt change much, tho i got rid of the black...idk what that, ig ill call it a belt add-on doesnt feel like it adds anything to me. the only other thing i did was that i added the purple handkerchief into her open leg slit. its great.

just a casual outfit. very simple and now that i think about it, perhaps the pattern should have been on her top cause its looking king of blank to me. not sure if i like the black socks or the yellow socks better.

ok im going to do The thing where i talk about rwby now. im on mobile so i cant add a read more so im just gonna. tag it with rwby spoilers i guess just kidding i know eveyrhting now

ok, so. if this were any other point in time id be content with just being like "it's really cool! some things are a bit goofy or lame but it's a good time with a lot of genuinely really good moments" and that'd be that right. but from what ive gleaned from val and other rwby fans i know the whole penny debacle has been Very Controversial. it is quite possible i have come in at a bad time.

now i just want to say, i really, REALLY like what they did with penny in this volume. her arc was really good and it felt super satisfying and genuinely emotional to see this robot girl slowly become more than the sum of her parts and into the girl ruby and co had always seen her for. seriously everything up until the final episode i think was written SUPER well and this was a very good The Penny Season.

i really don't like her death, however. this may sound like a kneejerk reaction from someone who "doesn't like it when things get bad in a piece of media" or something similarly insulting to my ability to comprehend media/art and view it in a critical lens. but it's still what i think. on a base level, i think it's stupid to bring her back just to kill her again. on a somewhat deeper level, i think it's stupid to kill her after going through a whole arc where she learns to be more than a machine, where she finally gets to feel, truly feel, all of these things that she's had inside her all along. she'd escaped her boundaries, she had become a real girl. etc etc. pinnochio and whatnot. robbing her of all that just seems weird and i didn't like it.

but from like. the perspective of it being a written work with the themes it has, it STILL just seems off. rwby first and foremost is about defying expectations. not doing what it's been setting you up to believe will happen. i don't think this is a bad thing (even if near the end it kind of gets old with just how much of the plan isn't going as expected but that's a different nitpick i have). winter is supposed to be the winter maiden. it's her name. it's one of the most obvious things from the moment you learn about the maidens. like yeah no fucking doy. and even leading up to vol. 8 that's very clearly the plan. ironwood has it set up and everything so that winter is guaranteed to get the powers.

but the plan fails. the expectations are defied. winter is too late and the powers are given to penny instead. this scared, confused girl (in the moment i mean), who already has so much on her plate to deal with, just trying to save as many people as she can. now she's knee deep in the middle of yet another conflict. she's the winter maiden now, which means now cinder is going directly after her. it means now winter is even more under ironwood's thumb as punishment for her failure. it means there's even more of her now that she doesn't fully understand. and it's hard for her, but she does it. she uses her new powers to protect as many people as she can, and even with everything happening both in and outside of her, she never gives up. to the point that maybe, just maybe it was meant for her all along. and when she becomes human, the weight of being half a person is taken off of her shoulders. she no longer has any doubts, she has no reason to waver anymore, she's whole. and with her friends by her side, she's ready for her new destiny.

but no she died haha looks like winters the maiden now after all. lal.

i don't know it just feels... insulting? what was the point of pennys character arc if she's just going to die immediately after? what was the point of making her the winter maiden if it was just going to end up with winter anyway, like it was most obviously going to be? what was the point of giving her so much if you're just going to take it away again? like no, penny didn't get to live life as a human. penny didn't get to stop the people who have been hurting her friends. penny didn't get to step up and become the thing she was finally ready to become. she died. in a way that only happened because she was human. everything she was was cut off for shock value i fucking guess. sure.

couldn't they have had her fall with the rest of the cast? couldn't they have found some way to transfer her powers without killing her? couldn't they have done literally fucking anything else than just backpeddling an entire character arc because everyone in the main cast wasn't sad enough? because they didn't feel like any of the other dozen character deaths were impactful enough?

it's. i don't know. obviously everything's a big cliffhanger right now so i can't say "i don't think it impacted the plot it any way". maybe jaune has the mask on in the vol 9 teaser because killing her is gonna give him like a joker arc or some shit. i don't know. i don't know how to end this.

my 2022.

alright gamerz itz that time of year again 4 Gamerz Yearly Retrospective!!!

so uhh im not gonna sugarcoat it: this year rlly sucked. a lot of stuff went down this year that id rather not go into detail abt here, but its been rough and unfair and sometimes i felt like it was never gonna get better. add onto that skool being mega rough, facing tons of imposter syndrome over my identity, anxiety, World Events, and fricktons of executive dysfunction, and youve got urself a total recipe for disaster.

but amidst all the doom and gloom.. i had better days. i played videogames and arcade games, i hugged the stuffing out of plushies, i anticipated release dates for new videogames, i got my hands on the g3 monster high dolls and relieved my childhood, i still luv siivagunner and wii deleted you and invader zim and deltarune, i got into just shapes & beats, i discovered the tourney community through mashup week: megamix and made some amazing friends, i got into creepypasta and yfm and osu and taiko no tatsujin and arcane and tmk, i got kirby and the forgotten land and splatoon 3 both on launch day and have had SO MUCH FUN with both of them, i luved watching ghost files and puppet history s5 after school and catching new toh and g3 monster high episodes,,

ive also acomplished some milestones too. first time getting an award for one of my cosplays, coming out as arospec [and proceeding to fall in platonic luv with my irl bestie xd], getting a compression top/binder, getting the awesome short emo hair i wanted for months, first time cosplaying at a convention, getting diagnosed with adhd and finally confirming what i had suspected for so long but never outright said due to self-doubt and fear of faking, starting medication, being in counseling/art therapy, trying sodas and monster energy and starbucks frappucchinos with no coffee, and learning to luv being "cringe".

but overall the best thing i did to make it through 2022 was,, just being me. i wrote. i drew. i roleplayed. i cosplayed. i scrolled through social media and chatted with friends far away from me. i read and wrote fanfics. i crafted. i brainstormed. i coded. i listened to music and cranked the volume on my gamer headset with cat ears. i was so very Not Normal about fictional characters. i made new friends and still kept up with old ones. i revisited old fandoms. i vibed in the front yard while listening to music. i checked the mail pretty much every day, secretly hoping one of my pieces of fandom merch would be there. i supported my family through the hard times, and they always supported me. i imagined scenarios and animatics and animation memes while listening to music. i listened to fandom lofi while trudging through overdue assignments. i rocked out to skrillex and monstercat and camellia playing beat saber at 8 in the morning for my virtual p.e. class last year. i learned the absolute beauty of platonic love. i started making unironic mary sues just for the heck of it. i felt so many emotions. i cried of happiness and of sadness. i hugged. i made vent art on my phone. i had complicated feelings. i felt like a faker at times. i was [and still am] learning to overcome climate doomism and death anxiety. i was weird, i was imperfect, i was cringe... but i was so cool for embracing my weirdness, my imperfection, and my cringiness, and i wouldnt have it any other way.

i know i can survive whatever life throws at me. ive got my friends and family by my side, and just being me in the face of.. well, everything, is the strongest thing i can do. im tired of lying down and just taking it. im tired of feeling hopeless. i will fight. i will persist. i will find ways to cope with anxiety and executive dysfunction. and above all, i will continue to love. i will love my family and friends who always have my back, i will love my interests and hobbies, no matter how weird they may seem to others, and i WILL learn to love myself.

after my 2019 retrospective post, i always hesitated a bit to look to the new year with confidence and resilience and hope, in fear of my hopes being crushed and being miserable. now i see that no matter what, lifez gonna be hard sometimes, but i am strong and i will NOT BACK DOWN.

so, for the first time in years, ill say it again. and i rlly, TRULY mean it when i say this:

BRING IT ON, 2023. this scenekid and tourney-obsessed geek can and WILL handle WHATEVER U THROW AT ME!!

I've had this idea on the back burner of my brain for a while now and drawing my magican/ouji inspired Klarion designs have really itched the spot in my brain enough for me to talk fashion more. Hope y'all dont mind me posting in the Klarion tag for this- I promise smth will come outta it. Long story short tho- I really, really want to make a Klarion themed coat with red (possibly blue and gold? Mostly black and red palette) embroidery and diamond patterning.

Okay! If you've clicked to read this! Than many kudos to you for listening to crazed Blue's ramblings about fashion when ive only just made a pair of barely recognize mock-up pants like,,, yesterday and I'm still feeling proud of myself for it.

Quick rundown- I'm super into fashion, specifically Ouji fashion, sustainability, traditional latine/mexican embroidery/textile work, and occasionally street fashion. I have a sewing machine, ive patched up more than enough ripped pants, hemmed pants/shirts, and patches in my life. Small things really.

But recently, I've always had the idea of making very personalized/one of a kind type of jackets. I've done this to my own jean jackets to embroider stars, add decorative paneling and the like! Love it. My latest passion project though and important thing here is my 'Robin' themed jacket.

I took a white jean jacket from the thrift store, dyed it green, bought tones of sequins and shiny fabric to add to it. I'm currently in the painstaking process of sewing in one sequin at a time along my cuffs. Then I gotta embroider the R on the chest with gold n black thread. After that I'm gonna add red/gold/green diamond (or checkered, havent decided? Checks are easier but is it circus-y enough?) Along the back pannel. I might also embroider some stars, stripes, or wings as finishing touches. This has honestly kinda cost me lol, which is why ive been working on for almost a year now but just started w the bedazzlement. If I was gonna sell it (never im in love w it already but if i was) it be well over 100$ for the amount of love and labour ive put into it (my fingers have been pricked so many times lol.)

HOWEVER,,, I'm so in love with this process and I am just DYING to do this again. And all this fashion art for me just makes me love my hobbies so much. So, if I get the chance id love to try my hand at a Klarion inspired long coat next. More dramatic with flare!! An old coat, either black or smth I will dye black. If I go my Klarion magician/ouji designs Id love to do similar diamond patterning on panels or double lined on the inside, with celestial embroidery and new buttons. If i go with more yj themed Klarion- I WOULD LOVE to do long sleeves with red inner lining or cuffs to do smth nice and sleek but regal.

Of course, I'd have to buy all this and massively improve my sewing skills beyond minor application to actual fabrication. But im deadset on making a Klarion themed jacket next. I'll also be posting about the progress on my Robin Jacket soon too!! This was all an excuse to really just talk and hype myself up bc I feel like a quiet textile nerd stitching alone in my quiet little corner. Also bc, i may not be the best artist, but drawing Klarion a lot recently has really helped invigorate me to get outta depressive art funk and be excited about creating again- even if hes just my fashion model at this point to me, lol.

MY 2023 MEDIA ROUNDUP

I've read a lot of manga in 2023. I've watched some things in 2023. Here's my roundup of some of the best ones. Screenreader users I don't know how image ID descriptions work so I'm just gonna type out the text on the image.

Part 1 - Manga

There is no good manga that came out (or rather, started publication) in 2023. But here are some of my favourites that continued (or ended) publication.

Dungeon Meshi (ended publication) - An incredibly heartwarming story about family, adventure, and cuisine. Full of heart of traditional fantasy stories with an impeccable worldbuilding that accentuates its excellent characters.

Skip and Loafer (currently publishing) - Kindness and niceness doesn't always go hand in hand, but this story reminds you that everyone has the capacity for good. Its complex characters scheme, doubt themselves, keep secrets, confide in each other, tell jokes, keep busy, and do all the things that make them feel human and real.

Ikoku Nikki (ended publication) - Tearjerking, heartwrenching, cathartic. This story depicting life and grief makes me cry like no other, but it is not about sadness. It is about love, it is about awkwardness, it is about embarassment, it is about everything that keeps people going, that keeps us alive.

Medalist (currently publishing) - Something a bit different from the others, this is an underdog sports story, with wonderfully written characters and gorgeous art, it tells a story of grit, tenacity, and the hope that those feelings bring about. The main and deuteragonist characters are definite standouts at the cost of rather shallow side characters. Still, it's probably the best sports story in recent manga history, though.

The following are manga I read in 2023, but may be published earlier. Exercise caution as I'm too lazy to describe them.

Q.E.D. Shoumei Shuuryou - Case of the week mystery

Ohana Holoholo - Tearjerker story about former lovers who come to raise a child together

Ace of the Diamond - Baseball

Look Back - Growing pains and the horrors of being an artist

20th Century Boys - Insane goose chase conspiratorial mystery about a cult-driven coming apocalypse

Billy Bat - Supernatural thriller about international conspiracies based around a cartoon bat

Bokura no Funkasai ('Our Eruption Festival') - How two very different people handle their lvies being upended by a miracle

Tengoku Daimakyou ('Heavenly Delusion') - Post-post-apocalypse story about a country trying to rebuilt from its mysterious ashes

Sousou no Frieren ('Frieren: At Journey's End') - Longing, desire, regrets, and doing menial tasks for shit pay

Karakida-ke no Koshogurashi ('The Karakida Family's Life Among the Old Books') - Three sisters live together under the roof of their grandfather's antique bookstore

Part 2 - Movies

I'm not gonna claim I'm a regular moviegoer. Here's my best two out of ten movies I watched from this year:

Killers of the Flower Moon - This was my first Scorcese film and it did not disappoint. The direction and acting kept me repulsed at all times. I applaud them for portraying such an utterly unlikable protagonist. Lily Gladstone rocked.

Oppenheimer - Nolan's style of editing adds to the chaos of the story. The quick, sudden cuts from all the concurrent plotlines really lends itself well to how the story plays out. Cillian Murphy slayed.

The Bear (Season 2) - People trying to live their best lives in the fine dining industry past their traumas and hardships. It is very stressful emotionally, but also really cathartic.

BanG Dream! It's MyGO!!!!! - Five girls, each 'lost' in their own way, find solace and comfort in music and each other's company. Within this idol anime lies so much heart and passion, it's no wonder Bushiroad has released countless merch of them.

These ones are all from 2023, I just don't want to write abot them.

Succession (Season 4) - Thrilling conclusion to the four season saga of this royal fuck-up of a family taking the world possible path on every crossroads

Gundam: The Witch From Mercury (Season 2) - A horribly rushed but still good ending of the main couple's storyline (and Guel). I just wish it was a 39-episode anime with a movie

Skip and Loafer - Incredibly faithful adaptation that stays true to the original while improving upon the already excellent characters

Heavenly Delusion - This anime is just straight up a better delivery of the first four books of the manga

Overtake! - NYOOOOOM! Also, great character writing.

talking further in therapy etc about dyscalculia has been interesting- basically realizing more and more what things are hard to do because of it. people want to assume on the surface that its just "math hard" but its not-- if you have ever read a bit more about dyslexia then you would know its more than just struggling to read or spell, right?

dyscalculia is just like that but its less spoken of. numbers look like nonsense symbols i dont think of as nuimeric values, 'mistakes' in easy math like subtraction/addition/etc (or just straight up not processing/solving them), able to grasp math in concept but not able to actually apply the theory, the inability of remembering any formulas, and even poor name and face retrieval.

its interesting when i add those up to various things in my life i never recognized as one of the symptoms. and i think whats extra important is reading the symptoms as "the inability to [thing]". its not like.. oh i can do some math, i cant remember every fomula but i can do some. its like, i literally cannot at all, and this was blatantly clear when i did the testing. just passed over many things bc i couldnt solve it.

didnt mean to write the above so long but what i was going to get to-- i thought a lot about the stuff i struggled to stick with hobby wise in the past. stuff i never caught on to and always felt like it was hard to do for some reason. a lot of it relates to this overall learning disorder, because of reading and listening comprehension. but something i learned that is hard to learn because of dyscalculia is... music. at first glance you wouldnt think about it, unless you have learned a lot of music. but math to some extent is used- in general... numbers are used. thats the thing. most people would think its silly that numbers alone would make it hard to learn but it really clears up my struggle with music.

and THAT is annoying as hell. i sat around for so long wondering why i just couldnt grasp it. complained to my dad who said all kinds of things about how i could learn w/o reading music, or i could learn by ear. but even that doesnt work- i still need to apply numbers to chords and even without sheet music. i struggle to listen by ear because well, listen comp is bad. i have made music, if you have followed me for a while. i have. but oof, if you knew my process you would see how my issues reflect it. i would bring up a key, like D, and pull out a screen shot of all the chords for that key. and then i would just... put notes on the piano roll. but hell if i knew the chords, remembered them, or even work on the music without that picture. i hardly remembered the key i was using the moment i looked away and i have no clue what scale i used if i open up an old song, cant identify it. i just kinda move notes around while staring at a picture.

and yeah, it works. kind of. but the workflow is hell, and the fact is that if i wanted to learn how to do it better, this whole... math disorder, actually makes it harder. you just wouldnt think about it!! i really didnt.

today in therapy discussing those learning issues, the one thing my therapist brought up was how its not uncommon for artists to have learning disabilities or more specifically, dyscalculia actually. art has nothing to do with any of my issues. no reading, no listening, no math. i self taught myself that, and continue to self teach myself, because its the one thing i could learn without any barriers. still, my issues would reflect whenever i did try to take classes- id get annoyed and not take in information, and id just go back to doing it alone.

it sure is weird, and neat, seeing puzzle pieces come together in some way. lots of "oh, thats why!" lately. understanding it is one key though, the other is now trying to solve it completly.
