Thinking about how the popping of a star shaped balloon freaked out Gordy causing him to attack everyone but Jupe which lead to his death, then Jean Jacket eats Jupe, then a balloon shaped like Jupe kills Jean Jacket

Nope and the Making of the Spectacle
In this short post, I hope to break down the making of spectacle in the film, Nope (2022).
The film, first off, is a subversion of the Western genre. It operates on an aspect ratio ranging from 1.33:1 to 2.20:1, following the traditional widescreen model of the Western which values the spectacle of landscape, the Wild Wild West. The film relies on the widescreen to showcase key horror elements, emphasizing vastness, emptiness, and a fear of something bigger than you.
Tumblr media
Also important to note is how the film uses darkness to make said landscape more intimidating, which plays on the fear of smallness as opposed to largeness of environment.
Tumblr media
This brings me to the topic of eldritch horror, a horror subgenre which Peele explores with Jean Jacket. Eldritch horror is plainly defined as a fear of the uncanny, though, can be expanded to include the fear of the uncanny and one’s realization that they are meaningless in comparison. Jean Jacket, a being which poses itself against all known laws of worldliness, can be described as an eldritch abomination; a spectacle to behold. Commonly with the eldritch abomination, simply looking at it spells death or madness for the witness, which we see in Nope as looking at Jean Jacket (beholding it) means death.
Tumblr media
However, something that was interesting is that Peele denotes Jean Jacket to an animal by using animal logic to defeat it. See, Jean Jacket definitely is an iteration of the eldritch abomination, but the plot twist is that Jean Jacket’s existence is much more grounded. This ties in to the overarching theme of the film, which is the reaction of the animal when it has been turned into a spectacle. The film starts off with this quote:
“And I will cast abominable filth upon thee, and make thee vile, and will set thee as a spectacle"
This quote sets up the arcs of both Gordy and Jean Jacket, both in parallel to one another as to what happens when humanity errs too close to the boundaries of control. Gordy, a full grown chimpanzee who is personified/humanized for entertainment, kills the cast of Gordy’s Home as a result of being made into a spectacle (and is thus killed for responding like any animal would to a sudden noise). Jean Jacket refuses to be exploited, and instead eats those who behold it.
Tumblr media
This opens up another point of discussion as to how animals in the entertainment industry are exploited for the simple spectacle of being tamed or “friendly”, thus we have instances like with OJ’s horse “Lucky” wherein the animal’s comfortability is disregarded for the simple fact that it is viewed as a prop.

Best of 2022 Movies #3: NOPE
It seems that Jordan Peele has been rightfully linked in with the modern directors who keep managing to innovate without Realizing it.
And in his third outing with Nope Peele actually does something even he didn’t think he could do.
Cross genre spectacle viewing.
In the northern California mountains, OJ and Emerald Haywood own and operate a ranch specifically for loaning out horses for use in the entertainment industry.
But after the unexpected death of their dad Otis Sr. To make ends meet, OJ begin selling the majority of the horses to tourist trap owner, and former sitcom star Ricky Jupe Park.
Tumblr media
Jupe who was famously part of a TV show with a chimp as a child that went rogue and murdered nearly everybody on the show sees expansion on his horizon with the Haywood Ranch, all the stands in the way.
Until a mysterious entity begins to appear at night over the valley, attracting the attention of the siblings, Jupe, an electronics store employee, and a film director all seeking the Oprah shot.
The nature of spectacle runs deep within the entertainment industry, and what Jordan Peele manages to do here is not only take plate of it, but shows how much inadvertently can be done with it.
Tumblr media
And with command performances by Keke Palmer and Daniel Kaluuya, Jordan Peele, actually manages to do the unthinkable once more.
Now we wonder what he’ll do next because boy are there questions that should be answered with the one thing he has not done yet in any of his movies.
Tumblr media
Sequel City.
Tumblr media
SUM 22: Jordan Peele with only his third film brings us more questions about the industry than answers. And we couldn’t be gladder for it.

"The Gordy side plot was really interesting, I'm just confused why it didn't tie into the story."
No no, you don't understand.
Nope spoilers below:
The Gordy "sideplot" isn't a sideplot. It plays right into the main plot, especially the stuff with Jupe.
It very much weirded me out where Jupe is showing the Haywoods through this attraction of Gordy's massacre. But then I realized.
His childhood trauma was made into a spectacle (as if this isn't the whole point of the movie) and he had to be okay with it.
Not just that, but he thought he was okay with it.
He thought that's what you do. The bad things that happen to you are made to entertain others.
So what does he do when he finds out that there's an alien "ship" eating up horses? He makes it a spectacle.
Not just that, but he thinks he can control JJ (Jean Jacket) the same way he "controlled" Gordy, and potentially have JJ put down just like Gordy.
The Gordy plot ties so well into the story and, unless you are well acquainted with the long lasting effects of untreated trauma, you probably won't notice.
