I’m sorry, can we just collectively reminisce on how funny this whole scene was? Like, who is the genius who wrote this? Or directed it in this very specific way. Big Bad Rio being absolutely ROASTED by his entire family because he can’t stop screaming about how much he loves this random soccer mom be brought to dinner. (Love how easy TikTok makes it to go frame by frame and really see their expressions.)

Look at Rosa’s face. 😂 “She is MARRIED, Christopher!”

And Rio immediately turns into a contrite little boy. Just nodding without ever looking up, his lips all pursed. My kids do this when they know they’re in trouble and they’re just trying to avoid it getting worse.

And of course Nick can’t help himself. You just KNOW he and Rio had a discussion about Rio bringing in his problematic new employee for Nick to meet and it was all serious business. Until Nick saw her and immediately went into his “let’s bully baby brother Rio” persona. Because THIS is the one giving him all this trouble? THIS is why everything is shut down? This little housewife with her bangs and giant cleavage and 2” black pumps? THIS is who Rio can’t get under control?

Look how mad he is 😂😂😂 Like, this kid has been bullied by Nick before and he’s right back to those times where he was the dorky little brother/cousin.

But I think my FAVORITE thing about this scene is Beth’s face through it all. Her utter bewilderment at the realization that Rio is, in fact, a dork. Like, the way she slowly lifts her head in this scene (while Rio lowers his down to his plate), and how wide her eyes get as she looks towards him. And look how embarrassed he looks!!! “Quit embarrassing me in front my my business friend, you jerk!”

But also, look at HIS face as he looks at her. He just can’t help himself. 🥰

Aaaaaand, scene! Genius!

For all the complaints that Rio wasn’t given humanity, this scene was everything. He is so wholly human here. So sympathetic and vulnerable. So many layers of history and meaning behind such an awkward interaction. A character who’s been mostly a persona is made into a person.

summary:

Life was fine, going to school Monday through Friday and going to church on the weekends. Throughout the school year I would get real busy and didn’t have much time to do things I enjoy. Going home from school would take about an hour, while I was on the train I would put on my headphones and listen to music, always looking out the window. I didn’t talk to anyone and nobody talked to me.

 When I was home, all I did was lay in my bed and watch movies. I love movies. The way they make me laugh, smile, and cry. They help me forget the boring life I had. 

So when I woke up on a plane with a grandma sitting right next to me, I panicked. When I realized what was going on, I went along with it. I just wanted to have fun. I didn’t think I would stay there for long. But if I was staying here for the rest of my life with stupid dumb people where vampires and werewolves existed, I wouldn’t want to go back to my boring mediocre life.

Chapter 3 - Edward Cullen

After lunch Mike walked me to Biology class, when we get there I walk in and see Edward, his dark brown hair, his perfect pretty face. He has such nice eyes and even his eyebrows look perfect. I see him cover his nose like he just smelled the most repulsive thing in his life. The expression he’s making makes his face weird. He looks constipated. The teacher tells me to sit next to him and I try not to give him a look back. During class he just keeps staring at me and I want to tell him to piss off but I don't. Before the bell even rang he got up and basically ran out the door. I know Edward is at the main office asking to get his schedule changed.

After school Charlie took me to a diner to eat out. When we got home I did my homework and waited for Bellas mom to call. We talked about my day and how weird the kids are at the new school. The only person who I liked was Jessica, even though she seems not to like me I like the way she knows how to act, she knows when to laugh and when to smile. She’s has a pretty smile.

Angela is okay too but I don’t like the fact that she took a picture of me without asking first. She didn’t have much screen time in the movie so I cant really say anything about her.

Mike and Eric seem like good guys, though they are a little dense. They don’t even notice when a girl so close and so pretty likes them. 

That night when I go to sleep I think about Edward and I try to remember the story line as best as possible. What I do remember though is that Edward, that weirdo, comes into my room at night and watches Bella, aka me, sleep. Though I don’t think that happens until a little while later.

The next day at school I don't see Edward around and I know its because he’s having his little “episode” about not being able to read my mind. He misses a week of school.

When I wake up for school I don’t see my truck, I assume Charlie went to go switch out the tires. I also assume this is when the “animal” attacks start.

When I get out of the house and start walking to the truck I slip and fall. Charlie runs over to me, 

“You all right?” He asks me as he helps me up, Im so embarrassed right now. 

“Yeah, Im good. Thanks.” I say, looking at the floor. While  walking to the truck he tells me about the tires,

“Yeah, just be carful. I put new tires on the truck, old ones were getting pretty bald.” He tells me while lightly kicking the front wheel. 

“Well, probably be late for dinner. I gotta head down to Mason County.” Right on cue,“Security guard at the Grisham Mill got killed by some kind of animal.” 

“An animal?” I ask, hoping to learn something useful. 

“You’re not in Phoenix anymore, Bells.” Of course I know Im not in Phoenix, Ive never even been there.

“Anyway I figured I’d lend a hand.” Charlie says, guess he wont be home as often. 

 “Be careful.” I tell him, even though I know nothing bad is going to happen to him Im still worried. Guess Im getting attached. 

“Always am.” He tells me, I give him a smile and thank him for the tires.

“Yeah.” He gets into his car, I get into mine and drive off to school. 

Eric comes up to me while I'm on my way to biology, “Prom Committee is a chick thing but I gotta cover it for the paper anyway, and they need a guy to help choose the music so I need your playlist. Hey, listen, um I was wondering, did you have a date to..” Eric didn’t get to finish as Mike came up to us,

“What’s up Arizona? How you liking the rain girl?” Mike says while shaking his wet cap on top of my hair letting the droplets fall on top of my head. 

“Better get used to it girl.” Mike says, I chuckle at his comment and move away from them, and start walking to the lab table. I see Edward sitting down at the table, looking at me. He’s so weird for that, I don’t think I’ll ever get used to him staring at me with those pretty eyes. Though today I notice that he’s not wearing the contacts that hide his beautiful eyes. 

I sit down next to him giving him a nod before I sit down, I didn’t want to be rude. While waiting for class to start, he talks to me. 

“Hello. I’m sorry I didn’t get to introduce myself last week. Im Edward Cullen. You’re Bella?” He says while smiling at me, I want to punch him in the face. No shit you dumb fuck, You didn’t come to school for a week just so you could avoid me. 

“Uhm yeah.” I smile at him a bit and look away while the teacher starts talking. He says something about an onion root tip cells and something else about phases of mitosis. 

“Ladies first.” He says while sliding the microscope over to me.

“Thanks,” I look into the microscope trying to make it focus on the sample so that I could see it better.

“You weren’t here for awhile.” I glance over at him for a second, 

“Yeah, I was out of town for a couple of days. Personal reasons.” He avoids looking at me in the eyes. I roll my eyes, He’s such a bad liar.  

“Prophase.” I slide the microscope to the side and write down my observations. 

“Do you mind if I look?” He looks at me, I just give him a shrug. He slides the microscope over to his side to look into it. He doesn’t even look at it for long when he says, 

“Its Prophase.”  

“Yeah, that’s what I said.” I tell him, why doesn’t he just listen to me? 

“You enjoying the rain?” He’s looking at me and smiling, he looks hot, he has a nice smile. 

“Yeah, I guess. Makes me want to stay in bed all day listening to music and drinking coffee,” I smile back at him, Just because Bella didn’t like the rain or anything ‘cold’ doesn’t mean I don’t. I enjoy the rain, Well I don’t like getting wet but looking at the rain is nice. “What about you? You like the rain?”

“Yeah, I like the rain.” He smiles at me and grabs the next sample switching the other one out.  He looks at the sample through the microscope, “It’s Anaphase.” He didn’t look back up at me and just started writing it down on his paper.

“Mind if I check?” I said, 

“Sure.” He looked up at me. I didn’t bother really checking, I just took a quick glance, 

“Anaphase.” I looked over at him and saw him smiling at me. He has such a cute smile. 

“Like I said.” He chuckled a bit and showed his nice strait white teeth. God he’s so hot. I didn’t bother writing it down on my paper, I didn’t care much about this assignment. Not when I can just spend class talking to Edward.

“I get why you moved here then, the wettest place in the continental U.S. you love it” He looked over in my direction but didn’t bother making eye contact with me. 

“Well, not really. Its a bit more complicated than that.” I said but I cant really say much. I mean its not like I really know why Bella decided to come here.

“I’m sure I can keep up.” He said his eyes now on mine. This time though, I was the one to look away. 

“Just drop it. Its none of your business” I was irritated, he should know how to mind his business. 

“Sorry.” He grabbed the microscope and changed the samples. “It’s metaphase. You want to check it?” 

“I believe you.” I looked back at him and he looked at me with his beautiful hazel eyes. I feel bad now.

Long brain dump post about argument with my aunt. I don’t expect anyone to want to read this.

My aunt has kind of taken over choosing/downloading books onto the iPad for my grandma lately. I didn’t know why but I was going along with it because my grandma liked the books and as long as she’s happy, whatever. But then, on Thursday afternoon, my aunt sends me a text asking me to resume looking for books because, “Mom does not want more of what I’ve selected right now.” So I get some options together and bring them down at dinner and say, “Aunty said you need a new book?” And my grandma’s like, “No! I’m trying the newest John Grisham.” Okay. So basically soon after that, my grandma decided she didn’t like the John Grisham book and told my aunt at breakfast. Instead of telling me anything she put a new book on. Okay, I thought I was doing this now but as long as grandma’s happy. Then at dinner I come down and she’s going over books with my grandma and I get further confused. It felt like I was getting cut out of a process I enjoyed without any explanation. So when my aunt was gone I asked grandma if she didn’t like the books I pick. She said she loves the books I pick. I told her how I felt cut out of the process and it was kind of hurting my feelings. She asked if she should say something to my aunt and I said no, I’d talk to her myself and not to worry about it. When I got upstairs she was on the phone and then I got busy doing other things so we didn’t talk about it that night.

Yesterday, after grandma’s dinner, she calls me and is like, “What the plan for the book tomorrow?” I said that I had some options and she was like, “Give them to me.” And I was like, “I’ll put it on tomorrow morning.” And she’s like, “Well I know how to do it. It’ll be smoother this way.” And me feeling left out rears its head real hard and I’m like, “Why are you trying to cut me out of this process?” And she’s like, “I’m not but sometimes Grandma needs a new book on a weekend morning and I text you and you’re asleep.” And I can’t really recall that happening but I guess it’s possible. And she says, “And a few weeks ago when the old iPad wouldn’t let me download a book on and I went to buy a new iPad because Apple said the old one was obsolete and you didn’t wake up until 9.” Again, don’t remember it happening this way but I’m like, “Okay and then I see the text and go downstairs at like 9:10. Grandma takes a shower at 8:30 and doesn’t start reading until 9 anyway.” And she’s like, “But sometimes I come downstairs and she has no book and she says you’ll put a new one on at lunch and she’s bored, I can tell.” “Okay, so text me to put a new book on earlier. She always tells me that lunchtime is when she wants the new book.” “She doesn’t want to inconvenience us. It would just be smoother if I downloaded it.” “Why does it need to be so smooth? You’re acting like this happens all the time and also she is asleep from like 10-12 every morning.” Then she starts repeating herself which is one of the things that enrages me and talking to me like I’m an idiot and I don’t want to get more upset so I just say, “Okay, we’ll do it your way. But for tomorrow can I just go down there myself one last time? I’ll set my alarm early.” “Why?” “Why are you making this so hard? Please just let me do it. I want this call to be over.” “Well no, because you got to say how you feel and take me through the whole thing and I want to do the same.” Then she starts repeating and condescending to me again and I interrupt her and say, “You want Grandma to be entertained at all times. I get it.” She’s like, “Exactly.”

We hang up. And I’m so mad. Shaking. And I go downstairs and put on a new book for my grandma and text the title to my aunt and she responds with Outstanding!!!!! Like we didn’t just have an argument. It’s the dumbest argument ever, I know. But she acts like my grandma is sitting in the dark, staring at a wall all the time and it’s my fault and that’s not happening at all. She has music, she has the radio and she usually has a book. This morning after the rage had cleared I realized it all started when the old iPad stopped working. So I went through my texts to see if she had messaged me and I didn’t respond. She messaged me at 10:44am that she was at the Apple Store buying a new iPad. She also insinuated that I must have been having problems downloading books that I didn’t tell her about. I corrected her that I hadn’t and she came home later all frustrated about having to spend the money for a new one. Thing is, she didn’t. We have another newer iPad already. She could have just plugged it in and had grandma use that. When I brought this up she said it only had one input so how would she listen and charge at the same time? I said they have adapters. So now the slightly older iPad just sits in my grandma’s house unused. And I think my aunt blames me?

Anyway, I also checked for calls on that day. I called her in the afternoon. She didn’t call or text me that morning. Am I supposed to know what’s going on telepathically or something? That’s where I am now. I feel better writing this all out. I know I didn’t handle this well but I think some of my feelings are valid.

Hi, have you done a top 10 GG episode list since the show sadly ended? I'm also curious to see how you'd rank the seasons? 2 and 4 are so close for me, but I think the Kevin storyline drags 4 down enough for 2 to come out on top. If it was only in a couple of episodes it wouldn't have been too bad, but it took up way too much of Annie's storyline (so initially promising with the GED and how the Cohen part wrapped up!).

Hi! I haven't, and I think I haven't really just because I find it so hard to rank episodes generally. I feel like a lot of them offer such different things that appeal to me at different times, and while there are certain things that will always make me feral (i.e. bathroom break, dubby, money making scene in 3.04), a lot of it can hit differently depending on the mood I'm in.

I've said it before that I think s2 has more stand out episodes, and that the run between 2.04 and 2.11 is probably the most consistently strong run of eps that the show's ever had, although I do think it's tarnished a lot by 2.13 and the reveal Rio's been playing her. That reveal undermines a lot of the stand out moments in s2 for me on both a narrative and shippy level, so while I love those eps, they are sort of coloured a bit by that.

I totally agree that Kevin drags s4 down (if I ever met any writer on this show, I think my first question would simply be 'so Kevin. Why?' hahaha), but I do think s4 is my favourite season. It's not perfect, but I think it took far greater risks narratively, dove deeper on its themes of gender, identity and the ways women learn to survive than it had done in any of the other seasons, and that the overall season arc was strong than the one in s2.

(I do have to add to that though that re-watching s3 at the moment has really made me appreciate that so much more too, particularly in how they balanced the darkening tone).

Interestingly in that sense, I wouldn't actually put any s1 eps on my favourite list? I do love the season, but it's a lot lighter overall and I think there was less complexity and as a result less meat for the actors to sink their teeth into, so! With all that said, I think my tentative list would be:

2.04 - Pick Your Poison

2.07 - The Dubby

4.15 - We're Even

4.04 - Dave

3.04 - The Eye in Survivor

3.08 - Nana

4.06 - Grandma Loves Grisham

2.08 - Thelma and Louise

3.01 - Find Your Beach

Honourable mentions to 4.10 – Strong Hearts, Strong Sales (the Beth and Dean argument in this episode is excellent on every level, and Matthew and Christina both really elevate some already strong dialogue), 2.11 – Hunting Season (I mean, what can I say that I haven’t said a hundred times before?), 3.05 – Au Jus (a difficult episode to make work given the tone of the show, and it only gets better on rewatch tbh - a pivotal moment well handled) and 4.12 – Family First (thanks, I love it).

It was hard to choose, but this is definitely my favorite episode, like I still can’t believe this isn’t just something I read in a fic. We actually met Rio’s family???? And his cousin, Nick, did more for Brio than Dean did in 4 seasons. We got jealous and possessive Rio!!! Beth feeling guilty about wearing the wire and desperately trying to get rid of it <3

We met Rio’s grandma ( who is the best), we got “ We’re partners” ( you know what that is? growth) and we saw Marcus for 10 seconds!!!

Of the three brio intimate scenes we got I think the season 4 one at grandmas house is my fav. It’s so tender but so angsty with Beth not allowing herself to fully lean on Rio and Rio getting his face as close to Beth as possible without looking at her and keeping his eyes shut. It’s almost like by not touching each other or looking at each other they could pretend it was just about the pleasure and not the other person

It did feel slightly random to me because they had been so distant for so long and then Beth just suddenly reached for his belt and he went with it. What do you think Rio’s thoughts/motivations were here? Do you think he knew she was trying to distract him? Why did he get her off if he knew she was doing something shady? Did he just want to and followed those feelings? I think he knew she was up to something and was trying to change course by coming on to him. And I think he flipped the script and didn’t let her undo his pants because he didn’t want to lose control in that moment. But I don’t know why he chose to get her off instead of stopping it all completely. What do you think?

I love this topic because it’s almost like my opinion of it changes with my mood. Because yeah, Rio could have easily kept his composure and gently turned her down while still achieving his purpose of trying to endear himself to her. He wanted to show her that he’s human, so he brought her to see his family. But the whole Grandma’s Den moment didn’t have to be what it was. I thank my good fortune every day that it was, though. 😁

It was this layered scene of him seeking her out in the first place. Because she’d just gone to the bathroom. He didn’t have to follow her at all. And I keep spinning in my mind why he did. He must have suspected something, or wanted to see her alone. Or both. And then the WAY he interrupted her… He’s never approached her like that before. He’s surprised her a million times. Almost always with his smirky little face and his swagger. But he didn’t have a ton of swagger here. He was so painfully open with her. His gentle, “What are you doing?”

So unlike him!

And the way he examined his own life with her. This moment was so important because I think this is him hoping she’ll see it through his eyes.

Yeah, I think he knew she was up to something. He had to have known. He suspected her even before. But the way he chose to approach her about it speaks to how mindfully he was switching up his approach to her throughout season 4. How he was asking to be chosen all along.

And I do think there was something to that moment for them both. We felt it watching it, so the assumption is that the characters would have felt it living it. That familiar spark. That electricity between them that never quite went away. And intimate moment was all that was needed for them to feel it again.

We have to ask ourselves why Beth chose to “distract him” in that specific way. Wouldn’t a better distraction have been to get him away from the bookshelf? Not closer to it by offering him sexual gratification right in front of it.

I think they both wanted to feel it again. It was a perfect opportunity to make an excuse of necessity and to allow themselves the moment. He wanted her to see his humanity. But also wanted to keep an eye on her. She wanted to protect her family. But she also wanted to be near him and feel the power of their connection. So they did it.

Look at them. They can’t say no in the moment. He held on to some semblance of control by not allowing himself to receive. But he couldn’t say no outright. Giving pleasure is still a pleasurable act. It’s intimate and sexual for him, too.

And ugh, I can’t pick just one intimate act! They’re all so special. All three of them. 🤡 Right now, I pick this one. For all the reasons you named. The softness of it after their storm is just something so special. I wanted them to have a million more moments like this. 🥹
