Today in 2016, the music world lost a true icon. Greg Lake, the maestro behind King Crimson and Emerson, Lake and Palmer, left us at 69 after bravely battling cancer. 🌟 Let's dive into the musical journey of this founding father of progressive rock.
Greg's journey began in the vibrant 60s, and did you know, Jimi Hendrix almost joined ELP? Imagine, "HELP" instead!
Greg Lake's impact on the progressive music world is nothing short of revolutionary. As one of the founding fathers of the genre, his contributions have left an indelible mark on the sonic landscape. With King Crimson and Emerson, Lake and Palmer, he pioneered a fusion of rock, classical, and avant-garde influences that defined the progressive rock movement. His intricate bass lines, emotive vocals, and innovative approach to songwriting set a new standard for the genre. Albums like "Pictures at an Exhibition" and "Brain Salad Surgery" showcase his ability to seamlessly blend complex musical structures with thought-provoking lyrics. Lake's legacy extends beyond his instrumental prowess; he was a visionary who pushed the boundaries of what rock music could achieve. His influence continues to resonate, inspiring generations of musicians to explore the limitless possibilities within the realm of progressive rock. Greg Lake's impact is not just musical; it's a testament to the transformative power of artistic innovation in shaping the evolution of a genre.
'I Believe in Father Christmas,' Greg's solo hit, is a timeless gem. But let's rewind to "Lucky Man," a song that echoes through the ages. The iconic Moog synthesizer solo was improvised! Can you believe it? Pure genius.
Greg's upbringings shaped his musical soul. From playing guitar at 12 to rocking global stages, his journey was nothing short of extraordinary. His impact on progressive rock is immeasurable.
🌟 Let's celebrate Greg's legacy! Share your favorite ELP moments and keep the spirit of progressive rock alive. 🤘

So you've ranked the Phantoms and Christines, how about the Raouls...and Carlottas? Please :-)
My ranking of the current Broadway Raouls I've seen would go like this:
John Riddle - You could not ask for a better Raoul to close out the run. Good details and a great voice. The ability to clearly hear Raoul's part during Notes/Prima Donna was a revelation.
Bronson Norris Murphy - I think acting-wise, I slightly prefer his take over John Riddles. There is a lot of nice, romantic touches that make the R/C shipper in me rejoice (that kiss to Christine's hand when climbing down the stairs after All I Ask of You??? Perfection).
Greg Mills - I wish I took better notes of his Raoul when I saw him back in December of 2021. Anyway, a lot of good touches. I remember when he did the jump into the "lake" during Down Once More thinking 'gee, I hope he didn't hurt his back.'
Paul Alexander Schaefer - He has put in the work and made an improvement, I will give him that! I have grown to enjoy his Raoul.
I have yet to see Jeremy Stolle's Raoul (and the way the Raoul situation is going, I am still holding out hope that I'll be able to catch him).
My ranking of the current Broadway Carlottas I've seen would be:
Raquel Suarez Groen - I miss sitting in my Phantom ticket lottery seat and hearing the little comments she made during the Hannibal Rehearsal scene. Great vocals, good comedic timing, and great acting. Her Carlotta is a very good foil to Christine.
Trista Moldovan - A lot of nice details in her Carlotta. I've noticed that she doesn't really go for the comedic moments as some Carlottas can do, she tends to play it straight. I think her voice fits better for the role of Carlota over Christine?
Janet Saia - The craziest part for me is that she also covers Madam Giry as well???? Anyway, loved the details she added during Hannibal Rehearsal.
I have yet to see Janinah Burnett and Satomi Hofmann as Carlotta (and I'm doubtful I'll have the opportunity to see them as Raquel Suarez Groen has rarely missed a performance whenever I've attended the show).

top 5 albums you think are fascinatingly bad. like albums you think are bad but interesting in their badness.
HOHOHOHOHOHOHOHOHOHOHOHOHOHOHOHOHOHOHOHO
Gonna list these by descending quality:
Angelic 2 The Core. I know this is, like, the prototypical bad album, but this did something a bad album rarely does: it earned my respect. It had so many resources put behind it, so many big names attached (even if one of those was Fred Durst) that for it to sound the way it does has to be a joke. There's no way no one noticed it was that bad. I know we all like to rip into the angel bits and We Wanted Change but the way Corey is singing on Seamless has to be a joke. I refuse to accept a reality where it isn't. That this album made me question such a thing means it is a new kind of good.
Summer in Paradise by the Beach Boys. I will give it one compliment. Some of the vocal harmonies on Hot Fun in the Summertime are kind of nice. The rest of the album is very bad. It sounds like it was half made in 1965 and half made in 1987. No one sounds like they want to be on this album except Mike Love, the production sounds artificial as hell, and it is dense with smug self-referential bullshit.
Love Beach. I know it has its defenders but I can't take it, I'm sorry. Even the good parts of it suffer by association. Everyone here sounds so out of place. The organ sounds fucking awful in a sexy tropical-themed pop album. Greg Lake's grandiose vocals make him sound like he's shouting at no one in an empty auditorium. The drumming receives the highest praise of all, reaching the lofty heights of "ok". All of this comes together to create an album that is sauceless. Swagless. Devoid of the only thing that could have saved it: sexuality. Greg Lake's come-ons throughout this whole thing sound as close to the concept of sex as a dog humping a table leg. This album is the kind of bad that makes you question why you even liked the artist who made it in the first place.
Elvis Greatest Shit. I'm not sure if this album is just cursed for me specifically but every time I listen to it I get nightmares.
The Blue Album - Banned in the UK by Black Lace. Only someone utterly uninterested in creation would make this. It is too polished to be a series of low-effort demos released as a joke. It is too dull and disjointed to be funny. The most shocking phrase on this whole album is "swing those boobs low". When I hear a bad album, I can usually see why someone could like it, even if I think they're wrong. That is not the case for The Blue Album. Every song is a cover with lyrics modified to be sex themed, which means we are treated to such clever wordplay as "Do the Condom" and "Supercock". This album was so bad it made me hate music for a week.

🎄Giftmas Day 10: Homemade Calendar--Grucy
Heavily inlfuenced by @newtonsheffield's ideas about Grucy--go check her stuff out!
Gregory and Lucy open secret santa presents with their friends--and take a couple milestone at the same time.
*~*~*~*~*~*~*
“Lucy! Catch!” Lucy reached and slapped her hands around a very flat Christmas present. The group cheered at her dexterity, one harnessed over many years of lacrosse at school, before handing out the rest of the secret Santa presents.
Now becoming an annual tradition purely because this was the second time doing it.
Although second year spread them over a couple houses, the group had stayed together, the bond established over numerous cheap drinks used to pre-game before nights out. A bond established when Hermione organised a flat Christmas lunch that included a proper turkey, and yes, secret Santa presents.
Just like last year, the group sat stuffed from a hilariously cobbled together Christmas lunch, passing around presents and the bottle of buckfiss that Gregory had splashed out on.
But this year, Gregory sat next to Lucy—not Hermione. This year, Gregory spent two hours in Lidl with Lucy, easing her anxieties around which stuffing to purchase. Then he had spent another two hours that afternoon helping Lucy cook for all eight of them—sneaking in a quick kiss under a sprig of rosemary.
It’s tradition Lucy!
That’s mistletoe, not rosemary, Greg.
I had to improvise! He had cried with that gorgeous smirk and adoring eyes pointed at her; not at her best friend, but her.  Lucy had been unable to tame her blush for the entire afternoon.
Four weeks in and it all felt so utterly new even though the pair of them had been gradually slipping into one another’s hearts over the last six months—a fact their friends pointed out upon hearing their official news.
Indeed, August had accelerated things. The friendship group had spent a week at Gregory’s home swimming in the lake, playing croquet, and playing hide and seek in the old servant quarters. On the final night Gregory and Lucy had stumbled upon Hermione snogging Lucy’s brother—Hugh. Lucy and Gregory had walked the length of his estate (no other word for it, no matter what Gregory protested), Gregory heartbroken after a year of pining and Lucy in shock after years of friendship suddenly shifted.
Back in Bristol Lucy would pop over to Gregory’s whenever Hugh visited from Bath, ready for him to introduce her to yet another Marvel movie and escape the soppy, and incredibly vocal, couple.
Then those evenings turned into study periods at the library, Gregory flicking pens at her whenever he sensed Lucy burning out—buying snacks from the shop when the pressure from grades overrode Lucy’s basic functions. Those study periods turned into teaming up at game night, slightly-longer-than-appropriate goodbye hugs and a constant text thread. Then one movie night, as the credit for Endgame rolled, Gregory leant over and wiped Lucy’s tears away. His fingers lingered and, basking in the soft glow of the screen, they kissed.
Not much had changed, apart from Gregory kissing Lucy goodbye and sometimes doing a little more than that during movie nights—which had moved to his bedroom.  The pair rarely engaged in PDA, to the point that it took almost two weeks until all their friends realised, they had ‘officially’ become a couple. Lucy liked kissing Gregory or holding his hand, but it always felt showy—too showy. It always made her stomach squirm, her shoulders tense, as if her uncle had caught her with her hand in the biscuit tin again.
Gregory had accepted this, although his hands always reached for hers even just to brush her knuckles against his. Just as he was doing now.
“Go on! Open it, Lucy Lou,” Harry called.
Lucy ripped open the present and gasped.
“What a naff gift.” Tamira commented, leaning over Lucy’s shoulder.
“I know we said tenner tops, but they could have tried—especially for Lucy,” Hermione pipped in. Although enwrapped on her boyfriend’s lap, Hermione’s protectiveness had not wavered within their friendship.
Lucy did not say a word. With eyes she flicked through the personalised, homemade calendar. The photo headers were various mathematical/scientific figureheads with little speech bubbles containing maths puns.
All her deadlines had been outlined in her designated colour, along with holidays and birthdays—those days had a little birthday cake doodle around the date. Her fingers ran over the little stickers dotted around each month, typically aligning with festivities—shamrock in March, holly for December and more. Then came the markers which gave away the identity of her secret-Santa—every new Marvel release date circled in blue and May 4th decorated with star wars stickers.
Lucy turned to find Gregory blushing profusely.
“You need a new one and it’s in budget and you don’t want me to get you’re a ‘proper’ Christmas present so…I…”
Lucy leaned over and kissed him—properly. Gregory reeled back in surprise before softening. He shifted them, swinging Lucy’s legs into his lap, so he could lean further into the kiss with unyielding passion.
“Ok, ok lovebirds, calm it down!”
“I love you,” Lucy whispered with a final peck. Both their eyes widened. Lucy cringed and started to withdraw.
Gregory chased her lips and kissed her again, cupping her face and ignoring the protests. When he pulled away his eyes shone,
“I love you too,” he whispered back.
While the group continued to open presents, Lucy made no attempt to remove her legs from his lap or stop holding his hand.
And from then on, whenever Gregory’s knuckles reached for hers, she would thread their fingers together and hold on tight.

Analysis of 'In the Wake of Poseidon'
I: Introduction In the Wake of Poseidon is King Crimson‘s second studio album, released in 1970. It came into being during a period of great instability in the band, since founding members Ian McDonald (alto sax, flute, clarinet, Mellotron, vibraphone, and backing vocals) and drummer Michael Giles quit after the band’s American tour. To make matters worse, lead singer/bassist Greg Lake would…
