@dragonflies-draw-flame Thanks for the tag! I haven't had the time to write a lot lately. This is just something I've been working on, on and off.

[Kylo] kneels next to the cot Hux is lying on and just looks at him for a long moment, willing him to wake up or at least show some - any - kind of reaction. He's almost glad, whe he notices a tiny shiver running down the length of Hux's body. He's cold, which doesn't come as much of a surprise, as their cell is practially freezing. Their captors have not shown them the kindness of leaving blankets or sheets. Nothing that they could use to warm up. So Kylo does the only thing he can think of: He strips out of his cloak, squeezes himself into the narrow space between Hux and the wall, and pulls the thick fabric over the both of them. It isn't particularly warm or comfortable, but when Kylo moulds himself into Hux's side and rests his palm above Hux's sternum, he can feel the steady beat of his heart and the occasional shiver trembling through his narrow frame. If nothing else, it offers him at least a little peace of mind, however little it may be. He lies there with his eyes open, staring at the wall opposite the cot, counting the scratches in the dull grey durasteel until his lids grow heavy and he falls into an uneasy slumber.

Favorite five fics I have written:

Shattered Salvation - over a million words. NBC Heroes. A love poem of Petlar and Petrellicest. Polyamory. Saving the world. Saving each other. Heroes and villains and enough time for side characters to have a moment, but the through-line was always Peter and Sylar. This was originally posted on FFN in sections, and then I accidentally deleted it from AO3 after it had been there for a few years. So there used to be more kudos and comments on it, lost to my mistake.

Grey Order - Only 573k words. Star Wars Sequel Trilogy, TROS doesn't exist. I especially like the Poe/Hux stuff and their balance of asexual with allosexual. This story grew organically on its own, starting off as a series of Force visions between Rey and Kylo set after TLJ. But it went other places and I love the places it went, eventually finding a path to lasting peace for the galaxy, and for the troubled souls in it.

Unification - 167k words. Star Wars Sequel Trilogy, TROS doesn't exist here either. This is my most self-indulgent fic. It was the one where I said, 'You know what? Fuck all the rules of writing I've been adhering to. I'm going to switch POVs every chapter. I'm going to indulge in plot-unnecessary world-building. I'm going to have three separate romances. I'm going to create a dozen original characters and have them all be interesting!' So I did. I had a great time writing it and a lot of people enjoyed reading it.

Services Rendered - 15k words. Star Wars Sequel Trilogy. TROS doesn't exist. This is explicit Kylux with a heavy dose of Knights of Ren and a whole lot of gang-bang orgy action with a sweet, non-monogamous ending. It is my highest bookmarked fic and second highest by hits. It's not my best work as a writer, IMO, but I find it hilarious that out of all the stuff I've written, this is the one that has the most accolades.

Dirty Talk - 634 words. My sole Star Trek fic. What I like about it mostly is how I wrote it. I was chatting with a friend on LJ, got inspired, and banged it out over a couple minutes as a gift to my conversational partner. Who was amazed that I'd just written that. Right then. Between one post and the next. I found the response deeply flattering, so whenever I look at that story I remember that.

I know there's nothing on here about the Murderbot Diaries or The Old Guard. I've had cancer and health issues coinciding with my involvement in those fandoms, and it's only been recently that I think my writing has recovered. My favorites of Murderbot are the Skulk series and Gurathin's Side of the Story.

It’s almost 4 am and I am Having Thoughts ™

I think a lot of us are aware of what’s called “Filing the Serial Numbers Off”. It’s when the author of a fanfic changes the names and some details in it and sells it as original fiction. The most famous example of this is 50 Shades of Grey, which started out as Twilight fic. (I’ve also been told that Twilight secretly started out as Hermione/Snape fic where Snape was a vampire. Hilarious if true.)

I’ve had a couple people suggest to me that I should do this to my Downton Abbey fic. While I’m flattered to hear they think it’s good enough to sell, I’m generally against this because A) I feel this puts all of transformative fandom at risk of being sued for copyright violation and B) knowledge of the source material is so necessary to understanding the story that I don’t think it would work as original fiction.

What I'd like to discuss is when the opposite happens, which I’m going to call “Writing Serial Numbers on Original Fiction”. It’s when an AU is so divorced from the source material that the only thing it has in common with it are character names and physical descriptions.

I want to say this probably happens most often when a ship doesn’t have much canon material to work with. The most obvious example (of the fandoms I’ve read fic in) is the Les Miserables Modern AU. Like, two dudes names Enjolras and Grantaire fall in love, and maybe Grantaire is an alcoholic artist and maybe Enjolras is into social justice. These fics became so purvasive that fics actually set in the same time and place as the book (or more often, the musical) required it’s own tag on AO3 to be found. This rightfully pissed some people off.

This was also really common for the Star Wars sequels ship of Kylo/Hux (kylux). There would be well written and moving stories about two dudes named Kylo and Hux falling in love, but they would have absolutely nothing to do with Star Wars.

And I’m not saying this is a bad thing! I have read and loved fics like these! They are in my AO3 bookmarks! Hell, looking back, I’ve written fics like these. I had an elaborate rockband AU for Pacific Rim that had very little to do with the movie. Yes, Newt was a nerdy guy with tattoos and Hermann was a stuffy Brit who used a cane, but looking back? That was pretty much it. 

We are writing original stories and then casting characters from already existing intellectual properties to play them out.

Disclaimer: all of those stories are originally in Russian but couple of them were kindly translated on English by lovely @anditendshowyoudexpect herself. So without further ado and in no particular order here's top-5 of my own favorite works:

Seasons of love (Vicborne/Victoria ITV) Cute little modern au inspired by Sense & Sensibility and random (slightly horny) mental image of Rufus Sewell in military uniform. I once was whinny about how sentimental this fic turns out but now I fully appreciate the warm cozy feeling it gives me.

How to love your dragon (Vicborne/Victoria ITV) Medieval fantasy au where Lord M is an ancient dragon and Victoria is a young stubborn princess. Very fairytale and heavily inspired by this movie.

Первый трубный глас против непостижимого /The First Blast of the Trumpet Against the Ineffable (Braime/Game Of Thrones) Good Omens au. I started to write this in summer of 2019 right after soul-crashing finale of GoT and premier of the first season of Good Omens and I finished it in summer of 2022. Extremely proud of that fact that I completed this story and of many little allusions and witty locution as well. Contains my poor attempts to mimic Sir Terry Pratchett's inimitable manner. Brienna is an angel, Jaime is a demon. The rest is love.

Сорока / Magpie (Reylo/Star Wars) One of the things that brought me endless joy while I reread it for the first time since it was published. The whole thing is a silly parody and one of the funniest thing I ever wrote. Rey had a rough childhood, therefore realistically she should have some morally grey habits. Like a pickpocketing and slightest hint of kleptomania. So Kylo (Ben) and the rest of the galaxy just had to deal with her being pragmatic and opportunistic from time to time.

А поутру они поговорили / And so they talked in the morning... (Reylo/Star Wars) And another reylo work was written the very same day I watched the episode 9. It's fluffy, cheesy, contains allusions to Pride & Prejudice and everybody lives.
