Hela | What If
Love that What If s2 gave us a Hela that is:
- bold, witty (for sure the sis of Thor & Loki), willing to learn, adorable in traditional Chinese dress (汉 Hàn 服 if I'm not wrong- the Han's costume - the contrast & line delivery, damn), a polyglot (likely a studious daughter, not like we expect any less from her but still, screw Odin..), has a great sense of humour & charm
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
- knows what's up, willing to sacrifice her crown ("Are you,Hela, the goddess of crowns?" "Give him Hell" 😭 like the one she was banished in) but still would immediately start a fight with her nemesis Raggy 😆
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I don't think it's necessarily Goddess of Death vs Goddess of Life here. She could very well still be the Goddess of Death, but only the death of the evil, having gained a new appreciation for life. These are just titles and we stan a versatile queen who can be whoever she wants to be.
More things I love in this:
Hela & Fenris 🥰, Cate Blanchett (her accent & voice 🤩, altho her mandarin voice is like a different person), Hela in 汉服 just hits home for me, she and her siblings getting along (pls marvel we need more, same goes to her facing off thanos)

Reacting to Contemporary Comics (Without Context) 13/?
Tumblr media
I've been working on this for six weeks. I'm sorry, homework and TWO ISSUES OF IMMORTAL THOR sidetracked me. Getting this post hammered out before the next issue of Immortal Thor comes out tomorrow.
I don't know what the fuck this is. I think it might be an anthology? We're joined by modern Thor genius writer, Jason Aaron, creator of the story with The Best Panel Ever in Comic History; and Walter Simonson, of nude!Loki bait fame, and several authors whom I don't recognize.
Spoilers for The Mighty Thor #700 (2017) and likely others.
This is feeling vaguely IT 5-ish
Thori! My good boy!
Thor wants to murder Yggdrasil. I love Thori.
Am I crying about mundane panels again? Possibly. In my defense I lost my dog recently.
Fuck I forgot he lost his arm!
Thori and the goat (idk which one it is) just following him is so great
"Man?" You recruited just random dudes, Malekith? What's Joe from Accounting gonna do? Did Doom have the afternoon off and owed you a favor?
Jane vs She-Hulk?! Why is She-Hulk so hot in this? Did this come out before Ragnarok? It must have, right? Ragnarok came out October 2017. Wait, no, it says December 2017.
WHOA, doc/nurse/whoever you are! HIPAA! I know Jane is technically a doctor, but she's here as a patient right now. Don't give her Jennifer's entire backstory.
Volstagg was Thor once?!
LOKI!!!
Loki why are you dressed like that? Where is your sense of style, you queer little twink?
THOR YOU DID NOT NAME THESE NEW HUMANS JANE AND STEVE WTF
There's my boi! Took you fucking long enough, dude
Yeah, because he's the God of Stories! Give him a fucking minute to try before you erase everything he's written! God.
Also can we stop drawing him so gross?!
Okay but I might change the name of my Loki playlist from Disaster Spouse to Little Prince of Jackasses lol
Why is Throg's name Simon Walterson... one of the prolific Thor writers is Walter Simonson... this is a multi-level spoof [I'm thinking he probably created the character, actually, but I'm not in the mood to fact check that atm]
Okay, when is Loki's thread of the narrative? Because that was... still in character, but he seems too cold about it for when I thought this was. Ugh, this is what happens when you let anyone other than Al Ewing write Loki.
NO! What the fuck? Talk about a NoTP! Hela and Thanos? Thanos needs to die alone and unloved. And Hela's married to Karnilla. >:(

Loki-centric fic recs
Fix it by laeveteinn
“You vs. those self-righteous Avengers … how would you like to win? But not just there! You can kill Thanos! You want the Infinity Gauntlet? Yours. Throne of Asgard? No problem.”
When Miss Minutes offers Loki and Sylvie a happier timeline, they accept.

Missed me? By rlybro
The final step of bringing down the TVA is by far Loki’s favourite one: catalyse the branching of the multiverse by messing up the Sacred Timeline.
——
Featuring: Confused Avengers, multiple Gods of Mischief, soft reunions, and one ex-bureaucratic agent who’s just going along for the ride.
-
The Collectible by lizardbeth
Loki lets himself fall at the Bifrost, thinking (hoping) death will follow. But death doesn't come - instead, it's much worse, as he's sold to the Collection of Taneleer Tivan. A telepathic hound becomes his companion in suffering, but their luck is about to change.

Monstrous purpose by Duce_gemini
"What a prison I will make of you." Caught in the machinations of a powerful being that is entirely too interested in his "destiny", Loki is cast to Earth and stripped of his power, his magic, and even his voice. Adopted by one of the pitiful ants, a street child named Book, Loki struggles to adjust to his new "prison" while trying to uncover exactly who this power is that has banished him and why it is so interested in the fate he glimpsed while falling in the void between worlds. And without his powers, it is only a matter of time before either his not-brother and his self-righteous friends discover him....or the Chitauri do. (Post Avengers/ Pre-TDW)

Half a league onward by lise
When it becomes clear that the Hulk can't beat Thanos, Heimdall sends him to Earth. But he doesn't send him alone.
Or, the one where Loki is going to avenge his brother, and/or die trying.

Mistakes made (and corrected) by adreamer67
In a different universe, Hela rebelled sooner. In a different universe, Hela Odinsdottir seduced Laufey with promises of power and convinced him to attack Midgard. In a different universe, Hela got pregnant, and didn't want to be. In a different universe, Hela left her newborn son for dead and went to face her father.
In a different universe, Loki Helajarson is two hundred and fifty years older than Thor. Let's see what happens.
(Aka my retelling of Thor I and the Avengers, but Loki is the oldest because I say so)

MARVEL ANIMATION PROJECTS FROM SDCC
I am groot
This series will premiere agust 10th and will consist of 5 shorts centered around groot (duh)
From the trailer, it looks like a comedy series with a light-hearted plot, so probably no real threat present.
It will likely be soft-canon: the series will take place in the main MCU timeline but none of the events will matter/be adressed in the future
What if...?
What if season 2 has been confirmed as part of phase 5
It will be streaming early 2023
Some of the scenarios have been announced: a story centered around Hela, Odin vs The Mandarin, Captain Carter meeting the winter soldier (most likely the Hydrastomper seen in s1 will contain a winter soldier version of Steve), tony on Saakar with Hulk and Valkyrie (scrapped episode from s1)
We dont know it the multversal teamup at the end of season 1 will be adressed, nor if the Watcher will return (although the latter seems likely)
A third season has already been confirmed
Spiderman Freshman Year
Previously confirmed by Marvel as a prequel to homecoming, however that seemed to change given that Strange and Dock Ock will appear, while peter never saw them before the Spidey/Avengers movies
It might span across the multiverse and give us a look at different spidermans, with only a few episodes centered around Tom Holland's Spidey (this could explain how so many characters will appear while still being a prequel to Homecoming)
Many spider suits will appear, including a homemade one
Doctor strange will appear
Daredevil will appear in his black suit (Voiced by Charlie Cox!!!!)
Harry Osborn (possible Hobgoblin) and Amadeus Cho ( possible Hulk variant) will appear as Peter's friends
Nico Minoru should appear (in the comic, she is a magic wielding Runaway)
Many iconic Spider-Man villains will appear: Doc Ock, Rhino, Speed Demon, Tarantula and Scoprion (we might find out why scorpion was in jail in the Homecoming post credit scene)
Norman Osborn will appear with his iconic waves, it is unclear wether he will become Green Goblin. It is rumored that he will be Peter's mentor (in a Tony Stark-esque way as a shot of him and Aunt May mirrors the first time Peter met Tony in the Mcu)
The characters and drawing style are comic accurate (including Norman Osborn's waves!!!)
A second season called Spider-Man: Sophomore Year is already confirmed
Marvel Zombies
Inspired why the zombie episode in What if season one, it will follow a group of survivors fighting through a zombie apocalypse (duh)
The series will be TV-MA (!!!!!!!)
Among the survivors we can find: Yelena Belova, Kate Bishop, Jimmy Woo, Shang-Chi, Kamala Khan, Death dealer (the masked guy from Shang-Chi), Red Guardian and Katy Chen ( also from Shang-Chi)
Other groups of survivors include an all-female group of SHIELD agents and black widows, as well as a group of skrulls
Amongst the zombies we can find: Ikaris (although it is uncleat how an eternal that is not organic can become a zombie), Abomination, A severed captain America, Okoye, Ghost, hawkeye with many arrows shot trough him, Captain Carter and the Scarlet Witch (Lmfao they are fucked going up agains these zombies)
It is unclear wether the events of what if take place in the same universe, although captain America does appear cut in half, so we dont know if well see the group of survivors from what if (Tchalla, Scott Lang's head and Peter Parker with the cloak of levitation) as well as Zombie Thanos with the infinty stones
Expect horror moments especially with ghost's ability to go through walls, as well as splatter moments
Oh and also hearbreaking moments between Kate and Yelena, and Shang-Chi and Katy when one of them gets zombified (Marvel you will pay for my therapy sessions)
Also moments between Kate and Kamala and Zombie Carol and Clint

I don't know where the idea came from exactly. But I have a headcanon that Thor struggles a lot with his identity as a destructive god who grew up in a war-based society.
Bucky has a particular arc in the MCU. Bucky, after being forced/tortured to be a brutal weapon with not even a real name, finally starts remembering his life, remembers and falls in love with Steve, heals from his hypnosis and mind control, and seems to find safety in being gentle, being presented and treated more delicate and peaceful. I particularly love gay-jewish-bucky's posts about soft Bucky (not @ them as this post has little to none to do with Bucky or them). Bucky doesn't want to be dangerous, he often covers or takes off his prosthetic as he still needs room to learn how to trust himself, he doesn't want to fight. He's done and tired and would rather sit at home under a fluffy blanket, in some cozy, loose pjs, and cuddled next to Steve. (I reject most of Endg*me and onward)
I like to also apply this sort of arc to Thor. He's very much a kindhearted, loud, caring person who does mature and takes the time to learn and listen. A lot of development and maturing happens in Thor 1 when he goes from battle-driven and practically blood-thirsty to understanding life of beings and that killing an entire race for the acts of the few or the acts of the past is unjustifiable. Problem is, he started off as a self-absorbed killer primarily due to Odin and the glorifying of conquering in Asgardian society, the fact that Odin is known for his acts of violence and control over separate colonies, that brute warriors are prioritized over the more physically weak like Loki, ect. While Odin showed fury over Thor's brash actions and harshly punished him, it has been shown that Odin never really took any steps to teach Thor true peace, especially with things like the control over colonies which was addressed in Ragnarok to have been happening in the background, Odin's talk to Thor in The Dark World where Odin says that mortals' lives are fleeting and therefore should mean nothing to gods which, most likely, that sort of talk about other races has been a part of the boys' upbringing, and Odin telling his stories of victory since the boys were young and fueling them on seeking glory. The true extent of the bloody history of Asgard is touched upon more in Ragnarok with Hela's upbringing and in the comics (I own the Thor vs Gorr series and there's a part where Thor goes to a Nexus for research and the librarian is very hostile and mentions how an entire library section about murders and bloodshed is mostly full of Odin's/Asgard's "adventures"). All-in-all, very war-driven society that Thor grew up in, so of course he knows destruction better than anything.
Later he gets to uncover lies, he loses everything, and shows a distancing and tiredness when it comes to fighting. One of the few things I agree with in Endg*me is how all of the remaining Avengers show a distancing to fighting, so much to the point they distanced from each other. Thor was genuinely depressed and consciously attempted to repress or ignore everything previous, and tried to build some semblance of peace out of what little he had. He has seen what true war is. What he grew up with, that glory, was Odin having perfect control and power over his enemies and beating them to submission. Fighting Hela and losing your home and people in the process, fighting Thanos and losing people that you love, feeling guilt over not being good enough when you fail, he now knows what TRUE war is like. And it broke him. So much so, he doesn't jump at the opportunity to fix everything and he worries over failing again.
I feel Thor's feelings about battle and his change could've been addressed better in anything released after Infinity War, falling into a similar arc as Bucky's: being a weapon (though for the 2 characters, it was much different situations with different levels of willingness- in Bucky's case none at all) but ending up in a situation that makes them crave being softer and non-threatening.
I also think a good, secondary tie-in for this sort of development for Thor is the fact that he is a god of nature. He is the God of Thunder with an ability to also create/control storm events like lightning, a tornado as seen in Thor 1 which could prolly be extended to controlling wind, and many people headcanon that he could control rainstorms due to the associated lightning + thunder abilities. Thor is not a God of War or Destruction or Battle. His powers lie within nature, nature events that can be destructive but can also be peaceful and kind; the rain that waters the plants, the soft thunder that people often love and even listen to ambience of to go to sleep at night, the beautiful strikes of lightning that many are obsessed with, the breeze to cool a hot day. I feel many gods of nature are treated much more gentle, and this could be a really good note towards Thor's character: a god of nature that grows up learning nothing but war, coming to a point where he wants to have the opportunity that other nature gods have that he never got. He's known for being good with animals in the comics so maybe he starts a routine to feed the animals in his area, he learns to control his powers and can bring a gentle rain to water the nearby plants and even aid his own garden, his powers give him an exceptional green-thumb, he plays with the village kids by letting them ride the wind- literally, entertaining people with tricks with his lightning similarly to how Loki shows off the fireworks his mom taught him in the Loki series. Even his amazing strength he uses for helping to build the houses of New Asgard, or lifting up a horse to help carry it back to the stable.
I just really like the idea of Thor becoming softer and maturing past the oppressive destruction of the Old Asgard, paving his own way and bringing a new hope and light to a new, peaceful, Asgard

Wanda vs. Thor grieving
so, I’ve been seeing a lot of those TikTok’s where it’s like, omg Wanda went crazy when she lost everything and Thor became a mess but at least he had a proper way to grieve or whatever. That’s not the case and I want to explain this to everyone.
When Thor lost his mother, the held a funeral and she because a new constellation. Thor accepted that he had her with when she moved to the stars and when Hela died, she went back to be queen of the underworld, where she continued her destiny. When his father died, he turned to dust but told his son, he accepted it and it was time. Thor knew his father was ready to die. When he lost loki, he was aware that Loki had died a warriors death and therefore went to Valhalla to be with his mother. Thors was grieving because he was smart enough to value his life but didn’t find purpose in his own life. He knew they were having beautiful afterlives and was sad because he couldn’t joking them.
When Wanda lost her brother, she was angry because Ultron had taken his life and she never got to say goodbye. She felt that her powers should have been able to protect her twin, but she was unable to so she blamed herself and her powers. When her parents died, she was a child and didn’t have time to grieve, because she was under the bed for 3 days and had to read the name Stark over and over which built a resentment instead of never knowing and because of the way they lived her parents never had a funeral. When vision died, at the hands of Thanos, Wanda had to watch herself kill him and then him die again and realize she did nothing to help him, but had to continue to try and fight thanos. She finds out they lost, and gets dusted. When she comes back, she finds that vision didn’t and she blames her powers for not being able to save them. She lets her emotions take over because she is HUMAN and this caused the problems at west view. When her children are ripped from her and she thinks it’s all her fault that everyone around her died and she finds that she could go back and get everything she wanted, she thinks that by doing it she will make up for not being able to save those in her world by protecting the ones in another.
This is why the Thor vs. Wanda argument isn’t a fair one, and Thor doesn’t grieve better than Wanda he just accepted what happened faster.

Top 10 Eternals Scenes (Spoilers, Obviously.)
Here are my top 10 favourite moments from the Eternals movie. Each of these scenes are my favourite because they brought out some kind of emotional response in me and left a lasting impression on me.
No 10: Friends From College
Ok technically I am cheating here because this is actually several scenes but I am just going to chuck them in all together but I really loved the running gag every time the eternals collect another member of ‘oh look its my friends from college.’ The best was definitely Kingo, I love the scream he lets out when he sees Ikaris, Sersi and Sprite. Also the hug a gives Ikaris was cute. The gag was also often made funnier by the presence of Sprite because she is clearly not of college age. But yeah defo got a giggle out of each of those.
No 9: The Final Battle
The fight between Ikaris and the others was so good. Like even after everything he had done I still loved Ikaris but I can’t deny there was something exciting and well cool about watching them go up against each other, especially because all throughout the film they make it clear that he is the strongest so you have that anticipation of how on earth they are going to beat this guy? The other thing I did like and respect is they did commit to the whole he is the strongest claim. In alot of films you have it where they do the whole this guy is the strongest, unbeatable the odds are so against this team of heroes that they might as well not even bother trying to stop them, like they do with Hela and with Thanos for example and somehow the team always gets the strength to defeat them. What I liked about this fight is that whilst they get some good hits in, ultimately it is true they can't defeat Ikaris, he is the strongest of them and in the end its his love for Sersi that stops him. This was something I hadn’t really seen before so I really appreciated that. I also liked the idea that in the end it wasn’t brute strength that defeated him and saved the day it was something as simple as love. The other thing I enjoyed about this last battle was how chaotic it was. They weren’t just dealing with fighting each other, there were moments where they had to stop a moment to deal with debris from the exploding volcano nearby or the deviant that shows up. Not gonna lie when the deviant comes out at the water and you see the eternals fighting from his pov I couldn’t help but laugh. Like what on earth must that deviant have thought? This team have been hunting his kind for thousands of years and he’s hunting them down in revenge and when he finds them they are going at each other. I don’t know there was something about it that was really amusing to me. Some of the stand out moments of this final battle though was the Makkari vs Ikaris scene, Phastos pinning Ikaris down, Thena killing the Deviant and Ikaris breaking free from Phastos’ bonds.
No 8: Phastos’ Goodbye
The scene where Phastos is tucking in his son and kissing his husband goodbye as ‘The End Of The World’ played was so beautiful yet heartwrenching. Like there was a lot of warmth and love in that scene but then over the top there is this sadness and ominous feeling because you know the world could be ending and if it does then this could be the last time he sees his family. This is one that really did hit me in the feels and is a stand out moment in the film. I also think its one of the most human moments of the film.
No 7: When You Love Something You Protect It.
Speaking of scenes filled with love and warmth, the conversation between Thena and Gilgamesh in the amazon where he reassures her that she is still Thena and that she can still fight and she thanks him for always looking after her was amazing. I felt my heart melt when Gil said he would do it again on any planet. I also like the line Thena says later, that Gil has said to her in past when she had asked why he had stayed to look after her, ‘when you love something you protect it, its the most natural thing in the world.’ It’s just such a beautiful line. This film had so many scenes like these where its just quiet moments between the characters but there is so much beauty and feeling in these scenes that for me they steal the show so much more than the action scenes.
No 6: My Beautiful, Beautiful Makkari
I loved, loved this scene. Again it was short, it was simple but it was so flirty and playful and the actors had great chemistry with each other. I also thought Kingo and Phastos’ reactions were hilarious. Like Phastos saying ‘What are we watching here’ and Kingo’s ‘Is this new, because I hate it.’ Peak comedy however I do not agree with you there Kingo because I happened to love their lil flirty flirt moments. Also have to mention that forehead touch in the final battle. All for this couple.
No 5: Family Dinner
The scene might not have had any huge significance to the plot but the scene where several of the Eternals are just sitting around a table having dinner and bantering about thor and the other avengers, Sprite turning Gilgamesh into a big baby as the others laugh. This scene holds a special place in my heart because it really was just about a family. It was relatable, it was light and fun and there was something uplifting about seeing this family just enjoying being back together.
No 4: The Uni-mind And The Death of Tiamut
This one actually gave me chills, seeing all of the Eternals united as one and the way they floated up in a kind of ethereal angel like way, then Sersi using the accumulated power to smash back to the ground and turn Tiamut to stone, it all just looked so cool ok. The music in the scene only added to the awe inspiring visuals. But also, and maybe this is just me, but I couldn’t help but feel sorrow for Tiamut. Yes his birth would have brought about the destruction of Earth but when you think about it he was as innocent as the humans and the Eternals, just another piece in Arishem’s grand design. What is even sadder is his fate is decided by others, he is not given a choice as to what will happen to him whether that is being born or being killed. The other thing I noticed is that when Sersi is turning him to stone you can hear Tiamut let out this sound like a scream, like he’s in pain, then there is that image of his eyes going out one by one. This scene to me was both very epic but also very sorrowful.
No 3: I Am Very Beautiful/ The Life I’ve Shared With You.
Yes I know I am cheating again by putting two scenes together but I think they are so linked with each other that its ok, right? The first scene is the one showing Ikaris and Sersi starting their relationship and the second is the one towards the end of the film where Ikaris tells her he is grateful for the life he’s had with her. I really see these scenes as kind of book ends of their relationship in this film. The beginning and what Ikaris believes to be the end. The first I love you and the last. The first scene is so cute, I loved how awkwardly nervous they both were, it was very much that tentative new relationship, the whole I like this person do they like me too. I thought it was sweet how he fumbles his words and says ‘I am very beautiful’ (which you know he’s not wrong) but then when he tells her she is very beautiful he looks so in awe and in love with her. Then of course there’s that line where he tells her he is hers if she’ll have him as he takes her hand. I just adore the way the scene played out with the way their breaths catch as he touches her hand, their kiss it was just perfect like I really believed that  these two people have an intense love for each other. Then you come to the scene where Sersi seeks out Ikaris and finds him at their spot where he is contemplating how much has changed. For Ikaris this was the last moment he was going to spend with Sersi, he knew the emergence was coming and that it would be over soon. So this was his goodbye to her and again I love how the scene plays out, the performance the characters give. The slight shake in Ikaris’ voice when he says he wishes that when they leave this world he could remember her. The intensity when he says he is in love with her and the sincerity when he says he is grateful for the life he lived with her. It’s a melancholy scene but there is also something poetic about it happening in the same place as where they began. It is also so beautifully shot with the golden sun behind them and the shot of their hands linking. I could gush about it forever.
No 2: Love Is The Death Of Duty
Sticking with Ikaris and Sersi, the scene where they face each other in the last battle. This moment was soo tense that I was actually holding my breath. Ikaris knows that he can protect the emergence but that means hurting Sersi. The moment when his eyes start to glow is when the tension really reaches its peak, then you see them fade out, he tries again but that realisation comes over him that he just loves this woman too much to go through with it, he can’t stay true to Arishem because despite his words earlier in the Domo he doesn’t exist for Arishem he exists for Sersi and the love he has for her. This scene was just so angsty and I really felt my heart clench when Ikaris’ eyes fill with tears and you see them both close their eyes and the montage of all the moments they’ve shared together plays, its beautiful yet bittersweet.
No 1: The Reveal
In case you haven’t figured it out yet I really like those scenes that are full of emotion and angst and completely break my heart. No scene in this film does it better than the scene where the other Eternals discover that Ikaris killed Ajak and knew about the emergence. I mean the acting in this scene blew me away because every character just has so much emotion, you can feel how betrayed the Eternals feel, you can feel Ikaris’ pain and regret at having done what he believed he had to do. The moments that really got me were the moment Ikaris says he had to in response to Druig saying Ikaris killed Ajak, one because you could hear the pain in his voice, like I really do believe he thought he had no other choice, but also one of the other characters and I don’t know who it was let out this kind of strangled sob/gasp at realising what Ikaris had done that just tore right through me. Also when Sersi says ‘she loved you’ and Ikaris replies ‘did she?’ I just think it is so sad that Ikaris came to doubt that, for in his mind how could she have loved him and then burdened him like she did, she knew he had given up Sersi and how much he struggled with that, she knew how important it was to him to protect Sersi from knowing the truth, how important the mission was to him, yet she changed her mind about everything just 7 days from the completion of that mission. I think Ikaris even at this point was still trying to wrap his head around that. Kingo’s line about how you don’t turn on your family is also another moment that kicked me in the feels and then lastly the moment when Ikaris says he will kill any one of them if he has to and Sersi’s reaction to this, she lets out this choking gasp, like she’s finding it hard to breathe. I just cannot express how much this scene got to me, it was just so intense.
So that’s my list of the top ten moments, very curious to know what scenes left an impression on everyone else.

Honestly loki in avengers (2012) was lightning in a bottle in terms of having a Fun Villain that the mcu has pretty much never had again. Can you even name five other villains across the mcu’s 24 movies? Of course you can’t, they’re all unmemorable or insufferably dull (yes, that includes thanos). The only slight exception I can really think of is Hela. And the mcu kept trying to recreate it but they kept failing because none of them actually understand what makes loki fun!
They’ve tried everything that they think people like about loki (sadboys with ideologies and Tragic Backstories) but the reality of what makes him good is so much simpler lmao
Loki is a fun villain and as popular as he was in avengers because he is the only person in that movie who is enjoying himself. That’s it. That’s all it is. He’s hurting people and destroying things and he looks good while doing it! He’s smiling! He’s having a good time! When you’re dealing with a simple good vs evil plot like a superhero movie normally does, your heroes are not allowed to have fun because they have stakes to worry about. They have something to lose and something to fight for. Your villain is your chance to let SOMEONE in the story have fun, because they don’t have morals to worry about. No matter what happens, they can probably find a reason to be petty and cruel and get a smile out of it.
And that’s why I think the “I don’t enjoy hurting people” line of the loki show was more of a bad omen than we gave it credit for. Because mcu loki DOES get satisfaction out of hurting people. He is not a good person. That’s something he should have to put in the work to learn instead of just having it be a retconned trait of his. I’m tired of how sanitized these villains have become. It is possible to create a complex narrative and a complex character out of a cruel character, and I think loki would be better if it had started there.
Just. Let villains be unapologetically cruel again! Let them have fun! This applies to non-marvel shit too I’m tired of nuanced character-driven stories in my Disney animation movies bring back the Disney villain 2021

to this day i still hate endgame just based on the set up alone.
like as a writer i fucking cannot stand the "hey we have like 50 people lets pit them all against 1 person" like what the shit. what the actual shit.
here are some of the heroes i can name off the top of my head. gamora, nebula, thor, steve, natasha, scott, rhodey, okoye, wong, strange, bruce, rocket, tony, clint, wanda, carol, valkyrie, etc etc etc.
that's more than a DOZEN people, and i tried to avoid the ones that got dusted. literally it's the dumbest fucking move ever to go "here's a villian and theres the 30+ people who are gonna kill him." like r u shitting me. that's not how stories fucking work. and maybe it'd be okay if some of those characters were unimportant, or irrelevant. but they're not. they're not side characters. a lot of them are main characters in their own movies. they deserved more than to be crammed into one single movie like a fucking YouTube rewind.
ive said this before but when you have 1 villian (with a couple sidekicks but whatever) against like 40+ people, you're gonna get a villian story. not to mention, villians are supposed to represent personal growth. for instance, hela, from thor ragnorak. she's a hurdle for thor, a reckoning of his past and of his insecurities. she's a genuine villian because she represents his fears and when he kills her, he overcomes them.
in endgame, what the fuck is Natasha's reason for dying? because they need the stone. okay. why do they need the stone? to bring people back/kill thanos. okay, why do they need to do that? because people are dead. okay, why are people dead? because of thanos.
that's it. all roads lead to fucking thanos, and he has zero personal ties. the only people who really overcome anything by hurting him are gamora and nebula. everyone's problems start and end with thanos. it's like "yay, thanos is dead!" and then it's like "wait, why did we want him dead? oh, because he killed half the universe? why did he do that? because he has a sad backstory? ok i guess." they gain nothing that they didn't lose because of thanos. vs with hela, thor gains self confidence and power and a new understanding of what being an asgardian means. he ends up in a BETTER place than he was originally in. that doesn't happen in endgame.
and there can obviously be movies with one villian and a couple heroes. but in that situation, the conflict isn't the villian. in that situation, the conflict is each other. they come TOGETHER to fight the villian. you can see that in gotg, and avengers 1 and 2. but in endgame, they literally can't do that, because there's too many fucking people.
that's why i hate that movie so much. it's the shittiest set up ever.

Loki Headcanons That Might As Well Be Canons
(Read: Loki canons that might as well be headcanons)
List of my favorite headcanons that will remain despite anything that happens in the Loki series or anything that has happened so far.
1. Loki was captured and tortured by Thanos after Thor 1.
2. Loki was being manipulated/influenced by the mind stone, a variation of how the avengers were influenced in the hellicarrier except a thousand times more effective. Making his actions in the battle of New York not his own.
3. When Loki is bashed into the ground by Hulk, he is freed from the mind invasions of the Other and the mind stone.
4. Loki and Thor loved each other, despite a sometimes rocky relationship. (Ie. Loki being treated poorly, Thor simply not understanding his brother)
5. Loki mostly served as a form of guidance to Thor that was sometimes effective but eventually so in effective Loki lost faith in his brother.
6. Loki wanted Thor to be king. He just wanted him to be responsible.
7. Loki’s tricks in childhood never consisted of him tricking and stabbing Thor...
8. Loki meant to die in Thor 2 but when he didn’t, he decided to use it to his advantage. Get back at Odin and fake being dead to escape the notice of Thanos.
9. Through trauma, Loki began seeing Thanos as an almost all seeing deity. He didn’t worship him, but he was afraid of him.
10. Loki loved both his parents, including Odin. Even up until Odin died.
11. Odin and Loki (from Loki’s point of view) did have a loving relationship but just because they loved each other doesn’t mean one didn’t hurt the other.
12. Odin had complicated emotions about Loki and Thor. From his point of view, he loved his sons, and deep down perhaps he did. But his cruelty or callousness or downright selfishness tended to get in the way of any real familial bonds.
13. Loki is Hela’s son. He’s half frost giant, a quarter Asgaridan and another quarter whatever Hela’s mother was.
14. Loki could shapeshift since he was a baby and changed his form specifically to Orin’s when he saw him as a baby.
15. The battle between Jotunheimr and Asgard was the last battle fought between Hela and Odin. Odin knew exactly who Loki was when he took him and Loki being his grandson is exactly why he let him live.
16. Loki becoming a hero isn’t a redemption, it’s just a return to form. Loki showed many heroic attributes in Thor 1 (seen protecting the warriors 3 and sif even when he hated them) like Thor. In Thor 1, Loki and Thor are on the same playing field. Both done and are capable of terrible things but one was shown mercy and the other was sent into a worse hell.
17. Loki attempted to kill himself in Thor 1, not fake his death... 🙄.
18. Loki can’t die. Being Hela’s son, he’s unkillable much like she herself is.
19. Loki spent the years after taking the All Fathers place planning a defense plan that was destroyed again by Orin’s secrets. Making Thor and Loki unprepared for Thanos arrival.
20. Loki has a special connection with the space stone. And feels inclined to protect it. Keeping it safe with him and taking it to protect after Asgard’s destruction. Though when weighing his brothers life vs the stone it’s no contest.
21. Loki’s magic was damaged after his time with Thanos. He uses less magic as a result after Thor 1. It’s slowly coming back but it takes longer to recover than the rest of his body.
22. Loki respects and somewhat resents Jane Foster for getting his brother to change despite Loki seemingly having a closer relationship with him and failing to do so for centuries.
23. Loki never wanted to be king in Thor 1 and he most definitely didn’t want to be King after. He finds taking Odin’s place to only be a little relaxing but only because he needs rest after so much time under distress. He’s quite happy to give the throne to Thor, provides Thor doesn’t drive it to the ground.
24. Despite everything, Loki loves Asgard and has a strong sense of duty to it.
25. Loki once found himself superior to many Asgardians and Midgardians or frost giants but after he learns of his heritage his self loathing gets rid of that.
26. Loki thinks Midgard is good for Thor. Even though Loki thinks most Midgardians are idiots.
27. Loki has at least one child he’s never told his family about and that’s because the child is not or was not fully aesir.
28. Loki respected Sif as much as he hated her. Both the smartest of the bunch and the most infuriating. Loki played lots of tricks on her.
29. The mind stone was heavily influenced by Thanos and is what caused the creation of Ultron’s personality.
30. Loki’s fighting became more vicious and skilled after his time with Thanos. That would be because Thanos had him fight other prisoners to the death.
31. Loki is gender fluid and has assumed his form of Lady Loki before but not as frequently as he would like because Asgard frowns upon it. Thor has never taken up issue however. None of the royal family has.
32. Loki has been repressed for quite a lot of his life, his discovery to his heritage broke that and what we see following became an extreme form of letting all that out. Thor doesn’t understand Loki’s breaking point and suicide attempt, simply because he didn’t see the signs of it.

okay so on the idea that the nine realms is the america of space:
- everyone knows what’s going on there all the time because word gets out on every major event but everyone outside the nine is just a spectator at this point so people be eyeing the crazy stuff going on there but everyone also just moves on with their day
- this results in midgard and asgard being the star attractions where midgard is like the generation of younger activists fighting the system but its also florida with a few people doing crazy things while meanwhile asgard is the governing political mess (re: the other realms are just chilling. maybe they’re michigan or minnesota or every state that just exists and doesn’t get much attention? jotunheim can totally be texas though because its got its own personality but also gets stereotyped.)
- “so one of the weapon rich kids on Terra went through a life changing field trip and now he’s made himself a fully operational suit of armour and claims to be defending the planet” “with their noob tech? really?? they don’t even stand a chance against anything in the rest of their own galaxy--” “no no no he’s defending the planet and establishing peace... only within the populations on Terra” “aww that’s so cute” “i know!”
- space has all the gossip which means they know all the messed up stuff going on within the nine realms and everyone in space is kinda detached and not a part of it so its like a tragic-comedy reality show that people like to keep up with
- “so odin is pretending his new son is actually his firstborn now... and also banned talking about the whole history of being built on colonialism and also no one is ever allowed to mention his executioner daughter’’ “huh, weird”
- “odin totally stashed the tesseract on Terra to keep it safe” “why are you telling me this” “I was just thinking about how funny it’d be if those short-lived humans found it one day” “you’re not going to go find it for yourself? it’d sell for loads of credits...” “nah dude i’m not risking stepping into the pit of despair that is that dark dark section of the universe”
- “there are rumours he stole the jotunheim king's kid and is raising him as an asgardian” “does the kid know?” “the father sure doesn't he thinks the baby was killed” “no wonder laufeys been going a bit off the edge recently” “i’m feeling worse for the poor kid stuck with odin now”
- “hey so that Terra hero Quill was always going on about? he’s been found and recently unfrozen apparently” “dont lie to me - humans don’t live that long” “that’s just what I heard i swear”
- “odin used another realm as a time out dumping ground” “which one now?” “the second one, and midgard this time” “at least midgard isn’t filled with the souls of the dishonorable dead?” “well it was his favourite kid, so, ya know,” “ah yes, blatant nepotism, thou art a villain”
-  “odin did--” “oh $#!^ what'd the old man do NOW” “well you know the stolen jotun kid? odin didn’t tell him he was a different species” “oh WOW that’s messed up” “oh yeah definitely. so anyways he tried to kill himsel-” “that place still has systematic racism in place and his other son has been pushing for violence since he was a kid so...  what’d the old fart THINK would happen?” “beats me”
-  everybody KNOWS what’s going on around there but no one wants to get stuck in that mess so they leave it alone and don't prod the nine realms with a ten foot pole if they can help it hence the negative connotations of midgard especially in gotg and captain marvel
-  thanos can be colonial britain or something idk how history works but lets assume he thinks it’s prime time to go to planets and just kill some people and take their stuff for his own cause and also Sanctuary has 0 natural spices other than a pinch of salt okay
-  ''i heard odin’s stolen kid, loki i think his name was? yeah I heard he finally got a ticket out of the nine realms'' ''good for him'' ''he landed with thanos though...'' ''well, $#!^”
- “Terra’s got a little band of protectors now” “yes I heard they took down Loki” “which would’ve been such a cool thing to watch honestly I mean a master of magic vs those cute little human beans” “nah he was totally faked it. I heard the guy didn’t even want to attack the place but thanos didn’t give him another out and wanted a native to speak for him.” “so he was playing thanos? oh boy that aint gonna end well” “but he also got the mind stone away from thanos so...” “the icon really just did that?? ayyy I stan 1 prince of asgard”
- “so I heard Terra’s hero band really just broke up because of some signature dispute” “I thought they don’t have a centralised government system yet though?” “there’s some subgoverning system that’s got most of the planet agreeing” “thats wild” “yeah so anyways there are still 2 stones there but now there’s no team to keep them safe” “oh yikes do you think we should try and assist or something in case thanos sends a retrieval party or something?” “I mean we probably should but I’m not doing it” “can’t they send Cap Marvel in? she’s from Terra aint she?” “yeah they should send Danvers in”
- “I heard odin finally kicked the bucket” “about time” “yeah but also his actual firstborn the one he tried to delete is back now...” “oh darn is loki ok?” “yeah he’s been on sakaar for like a week now just chilling” “good for him” “yeah but hela is totally trying to reinstate all the colonial bull loki was getting rid of as king” “where’s thor at in all this” “i think he accused loki of killing odin right after odin tried to guilt trip him into accepting he was a good father” “oh ew”
- “hey so they got rid of hela but asgard blew up-” “D:” “-and loki got to do it” “:D” “yeah i thought you’d like that... so do you think we should offer aid? they’re kinda in the way of thanos’ route to midgard” “they’re asgardians” “yeah but its not their fault they were living in asgard” “i’m not going anywhere near the nine realms thanks” “you’re right they’ll probably be fine anyways”
- “hey so... asgard was not fine” “oh no” “he’s heading to earth now for the other stones” “i’m not stepping foot anywhere near there, plus they’ve got their own protectors and all” “dude they broke up years ago remember the signing issues” “that’s still a thing?” “yeah dude it never ended” “wack”
- “i think thanos really is going to succeed and snap half the universe” “well if asgard needed support they could’ve just asked vanaheim or something” “asgard never admits to needing help we already know this” “maybe we should’ve told the other realms to help midgard jů̸̢̠̳͎̳̾̓̉͜st ̷͚͙̯̺̻̦̦̃̓̒̔͜i̴̺̼̗̞̘͖͉̙̾̆̋͂̀̚̚͠n ̷̜̮͚͖́̅̈̌̐͑͛͝ć̵̭͛͛̎͋̀à̷͚̬̩̾̒̅̿̄͆͋s̷̰̖̳̙̠͈̀͊̀ḙ̷͐͑̀̌̉...” “nah Migdard will be fine” “...” “john?” “...” “john?!” “...” “JOHN NOOO!!!” [five years later] “John! You’re back! Dude!! I missed you so much!!” “I told you we should’ve sent a letter or something” “john i love you but i still wouldn’t have risked sending a letter into the nine realms” “that’s fair”
in conclusion space has all the gossip, and people know stuff is going down there but no one wants to interact with the h*ckhole that the nine realms are, so everyone does their best to just steer clear and keep their hoods on when in the neighborhood.

Real quick scattering of thoughts on Loki 1x02 and x03 before I watch the newest episode. I watched them pretty much at the same time so it’s a two-for-one post. Here be spoilers for episode 3! On mobile so no cut again, sorry.
Spoilers ahead. You’ve been warned.
Okay. In no particular order but attempting to start with ep 2 first:
Loki trying to get info on the Timekeepers and the TVA in ep 2 and being blocked by the most bored archive librarian ever was hilarious. The whole sequence of him trying to get her attention only for her to completely ignore him until he rang the bell was creepy but so funny.
Loki’s reaction to getting the details on Ragnarok made me so sad. :( Same, Loki. SAME. I’m also still gutted Asgard was destroyed and I refuse to even watch the movie ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ But him going to look at that in the first place made me wonder if maybe in the back of his mind Loki’s coming up with a plan to save Asgard? (Or at least, one version of Asgard in the multiverse.) I would love that. I want Asgard back in general and was hoping for Thor 4, but having Loki be the one to save Asgard would be SO fitting. He may be adopted but he’s still an Asgardian at heart, truly. Having Loki be the one to save Asgard would be a great way to show him finally acknowledging that and have all the Asgardians acknowledge it too.
We have an official population for MCU Asgard! 9719 people. That fits. It’s about twice the size of a pretty small suburban town. Asgard is SMALL. It just doesn’t have the space for a lot of people. It’s still a city, but Asgard the Realm has other things on it besides just the city, so it can’t have a huge population.
I wonder what the official population of New Asgard is when we see it in Endgame? And how many Asgardians come back post-Blip? This would really all depend on how many people made it through Hela’s rule and onto the ship during Ragnarok- and then half of them would’ve been killed by Thanos in the beginning of Infinity War. Would half of the remainder have been Snapped away at the end of IW, or would Thanos leave them out since he already halved their population? File under questions Marvel will probably never answer. Also file under “Thanos continues to be really bad at math.” (Should probably go look at the New Asgard sign again to check, but I don’t think it listed population.)
Loki annoying Mobius by messing with his salad was great. Loki annoying Mobius in general was great.
Loki letting the goats free in Pompeii made me think he might have a liking for goats, which means I now have a headcanon that Loki was friends with Thor’s goats as a kid and would sometimes let them loose to get their assistance with pranks. Thank you show, for cute kid Loki headcanons.
Tom Hiddleston probably had a BLAST yelling at people in Latin in character as Loki, and good for him!
Sylvie’s entrance sequence at the beginning of the episode with the fight scene vs the TVA set to “I Need a Hero” was amazing. I haven’t seen Shrek in a while but this might just reach the same levels of A+ “I Need A Hero” song usage as the Shrek sequence.
Speaking of the beginning of the episode, the Ren Faire setting was SO good. Great way to get laughs, and it made me want to go to a Ren Faire again.
The Roxxcart setting for the big encounter later in the episode made me flash back on all the times Roxxon’s appeared in the MCU. Two main thoughts: 1. I so want a Jane!Thor movie where the main villain is Dario Agger, evil Roxxon CEO and Minotaur. Preferably working with a better version of Malekith (from another universe probably) like in comics, because as much as I love Thor 2 my one complaint is that their version of Malekith was SO LAME. Especially compared to comics!Malekith. Plus an Agger + Malekith teamup would mean both the Nine Realms AND Earth are in danger, by definition. Thor 5 please, Marvel. 2. I really, really miss Cloak and Dagger and that show deserved so much better.
(Our) Loki’s perpetual insistence that he’s better and that the plot (pun intended) is about him is both funny and also a little sad- because he knows, or at least thinks, that if he stops insisting those things, everyone will stop paying any attention to him whatsoever. And he needs attention.
Poor Mobius probably felt so betrayed at the end of this episode. :(
Onward to episode 3!
This was by far my favorite episode so far. I LOVE Sylvie. I love her and Loki’s dynamic. I love that we get Loki talking to someone he considers an equal about some very personal things, and that Sylvie does the same thing with him. They understand each other in a way nobody else has. Because they’re the same person, sort of. I’ve taken to calling them “alternate reality twins” and that’s what I’ll keep calling them unless told otherwise.
They also annoy each other in a way nobody else can. And it’s hilarious. They look equally annoyed at the other not falling for their tricks and equally annoyed at needing the other’s help before they really start to bond and I LOVE ALL OF IT. I also feel like they adopt each other a lot quicker than either would be willing to admit, and then they’re annoyed at that! Loki yelling “you’re so weird!” at Sylvie made me go “OH they’re bickering like siblings!!!” and that was pretty early on! I’m an only child but that had peak sibling energy to me. Even them trying to trick and outdo each other had sibling energy most of the time.
Their earlier fight when they first get to Lamentis, before they realize where they are, had some VERY quality quips and also really had me wondering who would win in a fight between the two of them. Sylvie seems to have more physical strength, and she’s got a sword instead of daggers so longer reach, but Loki has skill and he has tricks. I think with his skill at magic (he can TELEPORT?! Probably only a few feet and probably limited by where he can see but that’s SO COOL!!! I don’t think we knew he could do that?!) Loki would likely run rings around Sylvie IF there were no people around for her to enchant. And assuming that she wasn’t able to set any traps beforehand, because Sylvie has proven well able to set traps to take down people who should be at a major advantage against her. Otherwise, I think Sylvie would win. She seems to have better physical training than our Loki, and if there were any people around for her to enchant he’d have to contend with them too. And if Sylvie could lay traps ahead of time, then it could go either way (you never can tell with a Loki, much less two) but I think Loki would probably lose. Loki is just as tricky as she is but that seems to be something she’s had a lot of practice in. Loki is more about confusing opponents with illusions and duplicates and talking his way around people. Sylvie sets traps instead, and is more comfortable/better at using brute physical force.
Speaking of enchanting, me while watching episode 2: “Hey, these mind controlling powers remind me of Enchantress’ powers!”
Sylvie in episode 3: calls her powers “enchanting”
Me: “OH.”
So Sylvie seems to be a composite of 3 characters. 1. Lady Loki, as in Loki when identifying as female. (There’s also that time from before they said Loki was genderfluid and a shapeshifter and back when Loki was still evil when he possessed Sif’s body and went by Lady Loki, but we don’t talk about that.) 2. Amora the Enchantress, a major Thor character/villain who uses magic to “enchant” people into doing what she wants-yes this is definitely a cringey “magically enchants people into loving her, consent-issues-out-the-wazoo” evil seductress stereotype in old comics, but it’s gotten better recently. And 3. Sylvie Lushton, the much lesser-known second Enchantress, who was a regular teenage human girl when after a Ragnarok (don’t remember which one, there have been multiple but this would’ve been early 2000s) Loki for shits and giggles decided to make her think she was Amora and give her the powers to match. She was on the Dark Reign-era (aka when Norman Osborn was in charge of SHIELD and the Avengers) version of the Young Avengers, the Young Masters of Evil, and that’s where I know her from. She’s a great character- she genuinely wants to do good and help people, but her brain is a bit messed up by the number Loki did on it, so she gets confused. I believe she’s currently in comic book limbo after Amora found out about her a while back, got pissed at her for stealing her name and her whole Thing, and tossed her somewhere dangerous on the World Tree while saying something about how if she can survive it then she’ll prove she deserves the name Enchantress. She sadly hasn’t been seen since as far as I know.
So each of those characters have similar characteristics with Loki’s Sylvie. Sylvie 1. Is a Loki who is female (Lady Loki), 2. Was presumably raised on Asgard and uses her magic to “enchant” people via a form of mind control into doing what she wants (Amora the Enchantress), 3. Is named Sylvie (Sylvie Lushton, Encanhtress II). Also worth noting that both Amora and Sylvie Lushton have blond hair, and so does the MCU’s Sylvie. All three characters also have green colored magic!
May turn the above bullets into their own post just for informational purposes. Also, when we said we wanted Enchantress in the MCU, this is not what we meant. Stop with the Monkey’s Paw-style wish granting, Marvel! (Looking at you, X-Men comics’ response to us wanting more Wanda.)
Anyway. Will round off with my favorite thing: everything on the train. Everything on the train was WONDERFUL.
Loki telling Sylvie about Frigga and how she taught him magic and then demonstrating the fireworks made me tear up. 🥺 Right in the feels. I miss Frigga a lot. I miss Asgard/the old Thor franchise in general a lot, but this is about Frigga. She was AMAZING and I miss her. Forever love the detail that Tom and Rene came up with the idea on the set of Thor 1 that Frigga is the one who taught Loki magic and fighting and how that informed their characters’ dynamic to the point of it being canonically discussed later. There’s a great Thor 2 deleted scene where Frigga talks to Thor about this exact thing. Frigga is such a fave of mine.
Sylvie telling Loki about her own past in turn made me very curious what her life was like and what the differences are. She seemed to have had a really hard time of it as a kid and I just want to hug her. (I also want to hug Loki, but that isn’t news.) Loki has had a very tough time, but really only after finding out he was adopted. He doesn’t appear to have had many friends on Asgard before (though I headcanon that he was friends with Lorelai before her exile, and since it’s my headcanon I imagine a similar situation with Amora, if not quite as close a friendship because comics Loki gets along better with Lorelai than her sister) but he at least had a family who loved him and who he loved, and a status as a prince that would’ve given him a good life and protection. Sylvie doesn’t seem to have had any of that as a kid. :(
“Surely there were some would-be princesses? Or perhaps a prince?” CANONICALLY BISEXUAL LOKI YES! YES.
Comics Loki is canonically both bisexual and genderfluid! Explicitly discussed on page, multiple times, and expounded on by writers too. (One of the most heartwarming Odin moments for me- yes, Odin does have heartwarming moments!- is when he’s telling his kids he loves them and he says something to the effect of “my son, my daughter, my child who is both.” The latter is Loki, the former are Thor and Angela. I might still be bitter over MCU Hela taking Angela’s place in the family sorry not sorry. This was in Original Sin: Thor and Loki, for anyone wondering.) I tend to default to he/him pronouns when talking about Loki because Loki tends to be male more in appearances, and also partly because it’s what I’m used to, but when Loki is clearly female I’ll of course switch to she/her. I have seen people use they/them pronouns for Loki too. I don’t think Marvel has ever said what pronouns Loki prefers though.
Speaking of which: I realize the “Sex: fluid” on Loki’s info card in episode 1 was probably foreshadowing Sylvie, but I kind of want to also read it as a nod to Loki being genderfluid. (Loki is also a shapeshifter, so gender would = sex in this case.) Whether it would be a nod to specifically comics Loki or also to MCU Loki is anyone’s guess as of now. We’ll find out I guess, or if it turns out to be strictly headcanon than it’s whatever floats your boat. :)
Back to the train scene!! Sylvie loudly protesting that she can’t sleep near people she doesn’t trust and then promptly falling asleep across from Loki a few minutes later made me emotional. ALTERNATE REALITY TWINS. Also VERY much a parallel to Loki falling asleep across from Mobius last episode.
Loki realizing that Asgard was really his home and his family really was his family only to also realize that he’ll never see either again and deciding to handle this by getting ABSOLUTELY DRUNK is SO ASGARDIAN OF HIM. I cannot. He even did the “Another!” *smashes glass* thing just to bring the point home.
Oh gosh, LOKI SINGING IN ASGARDIAN. FEEEEEEELS. I know, it’s actually Norwegian. I wonder a bit why they didn’t use Icelandic instead? Anyway, this was lovely and I love that going by the translation it’s a song of longing to go home, and it mentions Idunn’s apples of immortality. Apparently the full version of the song is going to be on the soundtrack and I’m so excited for that.
Loki’s metaphor of “love is a dagger” was actually quite good, he and Sylvie just lost the thread of it right at the end there. I wrote about this in tags somewhere, I’ll copy it in here later.
Edit: here’s an edited version of what I wrote on this post: This was a great metaphor until it got away from him. So close to the point (heh) and then they veered right away. Let me finish this for them: “Love is a dagger. It’s a weapon for far away and up close. You can see yourself in it. It’s beautiful. You have to give it to the right person.” So what this scene tells us about Loki is that he’s been hurt by love because it hasn’t been real. Or hasn’t felt real to him. Maybe he’s given it to the wrong people, or maybe he couldn’t tell who the right people were. (And if this is in reference to his family then I think he’s still too close to the revelation of his identity to be able to think clearly about the situation. Because his family DID love him! Even Odin. He just lost sight of that with everything happening.) Love is also about trust. And Loki doesn’t trust easily.
I really love this quote and this scene. Kinda want to do a “Love is a dagger” graphic of i ever have time.
I also wouldn’t be surprised if Loki and Sylvie come back to this conversation and come to a more satisfying conclusion. I hope that happens actually.
Sylvie using her headpiece against an opponent in the train fight instantly made me think of Wonder Woman. A+. Also, I haven’t mentioned yet but I love the fact that Sylvie’s headpiece looks exactly like God(dess) of Stories Loki’s from Agent of Asgard. Loki’s Ragnarok headpiece definitely had big AoA Loki vibes, but Sylvie’s headpiece is much closer- mostly it’s smaller, which is very Agent of Asgard Loki in general, but the one horn being cut off is specifically a God(dess) of Stories Loki thing and I love that they pulled from that.
Loki throwing the dagger and missing because he’s drunk was hilarious. Not good for Sylvie, but hilarious to watch. Don’t fight while drunk, Loki. Also, he threw “love” at Sylvie and I laughed when I realized that.
I didn’t realize until I saw a parallel gifset of it why Loki carefully going up to Sylvie after her scream felt so familiar- it’s just like how he went up to Thor after Thor overturned the table in Thor 1. The CONTINUINTY!! Absolutely amazing.
While trying to save the Ark Loki was probably thinking a lot about what he saw in the TVA clips of his own people trying to escape Asgard during Ragnarok and that hits kind of hard.
Loki apparently using telekinesis to stop the column from falling on him and Sylvie threw me off a lot until I saw another gifset that included the moment in Thor 2 (trailers only, I think) when he finds out Frigga is dead and all the furniture close to him breaks and flies away from him. The pose was even the same as when he stopped the column. I think he can sort of... push things away from him? (Almost like a Force Push 🤔) He seems to need to stop and tense up his arms while he does it though. And it doesn’t have the green effect the rest of his magic does, which is odd.
Speaking of Loki’s powers, I’ve said this in tags for sure but I’m so happy they’re FINALLY letting Loki hit people with green magic bolts. He does tend to prefer more subtle uses of magic, but I still can’t believe it took over 4 movies for that to happen. It’s kind of a no-brainer magic attack- probably exactly why Loki prefers other things- but you’d think he would’ve done it at least once after 4 movies.
I saw a post point out that by the end of the episode, Sylvie has lost both her headpiece and her cloak/robe thing, which makes me wonder if she’s going to get a new outfit by the end of the show. Or at least different accessories. I’m also curious if she’s going to take up the Enchantress moniker by the end of the show.
Finishing this with theme analysis and theory time:
The revelation that TVA agents used to be variants and were somehow reprogrammed makes so much sense. There’s something immediately shifty about the idea of 3 Time Keepers dictating the fate of everyone in infinite multiverses, and this just solidifies the hint that the Time Keepers are going to be the overall Big Bads. Which makes sense, narratively! But this shifts the TVA agents from villains to victims. Mobius gets to stay sympathetic and so does Sylvie, AND once the TVA agents find out about their origins it puts the same choice onto them that Loki has. They all have a choice now about who they’re going to be. They’re not who they thought they were, but are they going to let themselves be defined by what other people (here, the Time Keepers) think they should be, or are they going to be who they want to be.
This is exactly what Loki: Agent of Asgard is about, by the way. And I know I said in the last post that Loki’s greatest villain is himself, but I’m going to amend that because I didn’t say it quite right. Loki’s greatest villain is his evil self. Loki the god of evil, the Loki that is the villain. Loki (and all the other Asgardians) in Agent of Asgard is genuinely a god, and AoA tells us that gods are defined by belief- they are what people believe them to be. That’s how they exist. So because so many people believe Loki is an evil villain, the universe tries to twist him to fit that role. The plot of AoA is Loki trying to avoid that fate, to be better, be who he wants to be. It’s a meta story. It’s Loki trying to break free of the narrative he’s been part of up until that point. And eventually he manages to break the fourth wall itself and take control of his own narrative by becoming the god of stories. He controls his own story and it no longer matters what other people think he is, only what he thinks of himself. Nobody else gets to change or define him.
AoA’s villain is a future version of Loki that does go back to being evil. He’s basically the cosmic force- destiny, the narrative itself, etc- that’s trying to fit Loki into the “evil” box personified. Loki is seemingly taking that idea and subbing in a different personification for that same idea of lack of choice: the Time Keepers. We know from the Miss Minutes short in episode 1 that the Time Keepers want one timeline. We don’t know if that’s actually to prevent a multiversal war like the short suggests or if that’s just propaganda. When Loki tries to find out more about the war or about the beginning or end of time in episode 2, he can’t access those documents. Something doesn’t seem right there.
Edit: Also, in episode 2 Loki compares the TVA to Asgard by saying both the TVA agents and Asgardians are equally stupid. The reveal of who the TVA agents are adds a new dimension to that comparison. They both see themselves as guardians of the world around them, special, but really they’re no more special than the people they’re fighting to protect. Or in other words, they’re only as “special” (“heroic,” really) as they make themselves.
Also an edit: damn I just realized the continued stupidity of R*gnarok having Fenris and Odin in the same movie and Odin dies but get killed by Fenris. Asgardians have a saying about watching for wolves’ teeth.
I’ve seen the theory around that Sylvie might be a former TVA agent (which seems to be backed up by the midseason trailer I very belatedly saw, oh my GOD TINY SYLVIE!!!!! But also oh no tiny Sylvie at the TVA :() and I really like that. It makes sense. Maybe she went rogue because she realized the TVA is preventing people from choosing for themselves. Maybe she even knows what it is the Time Keepers actually want. Or maybe she’s doing this just for herself because she didn’t enjoy being brainwashed by the TVA and she doesn’t like being told who to be! That is after all part of “what makes a Loki a Loki,” even if she doesn’t use that name anymore.
I’m also wondering (hoping?) if maybe her being a former TVA agent could explain why she’s a mashup of different characters, instead of it just being Marvel mashing characters together because they can. This is mostly wild speculation, but could the TVA possibly have put multiple people’s timelines/memories inside her head? What if she’s in universe an amalgamation of a Loki, an Amora, and/or a Sylvie?
We’ve had some clips of what looks like a Thor 1 era Loki in front of the throne on Asgard- which looks different to me; maybe Loki redecorated? We’ve also gotten a shot of Loki in front of a ruined NYC skyline, including Avengers Tower. Maybe we’ll get an episode where Loki wins and we’ll see different timelines where he wins in different ways, until he realizes that this isn’t actually what he wants?
Whoops this got long??? Thanks for reading if you read this far!
