It is estimated to be between 450 and 500 years old and is thought to have been planted by Queen Elizabeth I.⁣ ⁣ Originally growing out in open parkland, the Panshanger Great Oak was first measured in 1804 when its circumference was 5.2 metres. It has been measured regularly ever since and has been increasing in diameter at almost half an inch per year.⁣ ⁣ This veteran tree provides an important habitat for wildlife, supporting a huge number of species (up to 300 different species of insect) that rely on dead and rotting wood such as insects, beatles, fungi, mosses and lichens.⁣ ⁣ The Great Oak has been admired by many people over the years, including Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, who stayed at Panshanger House in July 1841.
