SPN- No Exit (2.06)

Pairing: N/A, Olive Winchester (OC)

Summary: Ellen forces Jo to hand a new case over to the Winchesters, Dean has to protect yet another person, the siblings find out bad news, and Olive stands up for her boys

Warnings: cursing, a serial killer, blood, ghosts and stuff

“Los Angeles, California.” Dean wiggled his eyebrows.

“What’s in L.A.?” I asked, following him out of the car.

“Young girl’s been kidnapped by an evil cult.”

“Yeah?” Sam raised his eyebrows. “Girl got a name?”

“Yeah.” Dean grinned. “Katie Holmes.”

Sam snorted as Dean giggled. “That’s funny. And for you, so bitchy.”

The sound of breaking glass and shouts came from inside the Roadhouse. I flinched and shuffled closer to Dean. Sam scooped Jinx out of the car.

“On the other hand…” He shrugged. “Catfight.”

“Hell no, that’s scary! Let’s just go. We can come back later.” I begged, tugging at Dean’s sleeve.

“Nope. Come on.” Dean dragged me toward the door.

“Sams?” I looked over my shoulder as I was helplessly pulled along.

He shrugged.

“I am your mother, I don’t have to be reasonable!” Ellen shouted as we slowly walked in.

“You can’t keep me here!” Jo yelled.

“Oh, don’t you bet on that, sweetie.”

“What are you gonna do, ma? Chain me up in the basement?”

“You know what, you’ve had worse ideas than that recently! Hey, you don’t wanna stay, don’t stay. Go back to school.” Ellen snarled.

The three of us cringed. Hearing that was worse than hearing nails on a chalkboard.

“I didn’t belong there!” Jo screamed. “I was a freak with a knife collection!”

“Yeah, and getting yourself killed on some dusty back road, that’s where you belong?” Ellen turned and saw the three of us.

Jinx whined, I froze like a deer in headlights, Dean squared his shoulders and avoided eye contact, and Sam scratched the back of his neck.

“Kids, bad time.”

“Yes, ma’am.”

“Sorry.”

“Yeah, we barely drink before ten anyways.”

“Wait.” Jo snapped. “I wanna know what they think about this.”

A couple walked through the door with their two kids, who were still little toddlers. They were obviously tourists, and they looked between Jo and Ellen with wide eyes.

“I don’t care what they think!”

“Are you guys open?”

“No!”

“Yes!”

The dad backed away. “We’ll just… check out the Arby’s down the road.”

The family left quickly, and the phone went off. Jo glared at it, and Ellen stalked over to answer. She snatched the phone up with a scowl. We sat down at the bar with heavy sighs from each.

“Harvelle’s. Yeah, Preacher.”

Jo shoved a manilla folder Dean’s way, and he backed up in his seat. “Three weeks ago a young girl disappears from a Philadelphia apartment.”

Dean only looked at the folder with wide eyes.

“Take it, it won’t bite.”

“No, but your mom might.” Dean whispered.

I took the folder from her and opened it up. “What else ya got, Jo?”

“This girl wasn't the first. Over the past eighty years six women have vanished. All from the same building, all young blondes. Only happens every decade or two so cops never eyeball the pattern. So we're either dealing with one very old serial killer, or…”

“Who put this together?” Dean looked over my shoulder. “Ash?”

“I did it myself.” Jo snapped.

I hummed. “Nice.”

“I mean, we have hit the road for a lot less.”

“Good.” Ellen hissed. “You like the case so much, you take it!”

“Mom!” Jo whined.

“Joanna Beth, this family has lost enough! I won’t lose you too… I just won’t.”

“I feel kind of bad…” Sam sighed. “Snaking Jo’s case.”

“Yeah, maybe she put together a good file. But could you see her out here actually working a case?” Dean raised an eyebrow.

Sam and I shrugged. Jinx tugged at the leash, and I pulled back. She wanted Dean, but Dean didn’t wanna hold the leash.

“Yeah, I don’t think so.”

Sam and Dean pulled out EMF readers and I looked high and low, my new glasses on.

“You getting anything?”

“No. Not yet.” Sam shook his head.

“Ol?”

“Nothing.”

Sam ran his EMF over a light switch, and it went off. He leaned over and squinted, looking disgusted.

“What’s that?”

“What’s what?” Dean and I crowded him.

Sam touched a black goo oozing from the switch, and I groaned. He huffed. Jinx jumped at our feet, snorting and sniffing. I touched the goo and groaned. I put my fingers down to let Jinx smell it. She pulled away with a loud whine. She dropped onto her stomach and ran her paws over her face.

“Holy crap.”

Dean reached over my head and touched it, rubbing his fingers together.

“That’s ectoplasm. Guys, I think I know what we’re dealing with here.” Dean got serious, then turned to us with a grin. “It’s the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man.”

Sam rolled his eyes and I giggled.

“Dean, I’ve only seen this stuff like… twice. I mean, to make this shit, you’ve gotta be one majorly pissed off spirit.”

Dean sighed. “Alright, let’s find this badass before he snags any more girls.”

We rounded the corner and continued down the hallway. We heard two voices, and Dean reacted quickest, pulling us both to hide in a corner. Sam snatched Jinx off the floor and held her against his chest. She had gotten big, and Sam was the only one who could carry her without much of a struggle.

“It is so spacious! You know, my friend told me I absolutely have to come check it out, and I have to admit, she was right. You did a really good job with this place.”

I tilted my head and looked at Dean. He looked angry.

That’s Jo.

I nodded.

Definitely.

Dean stepped out first, catching them as they turned the corner.

“What the hell are you doing here?” He hissed in a low voice.

“There you are, honey.” Jo didn’t skip a beat, and she settled into Dean’s side with an arm around his waist.

Sam and I stood back, a bit confused. Jinx let out a whine as Sam put her down.

“This is my boyfriend Dean, his little sister Olive, and their buddy, Sam. This is our doggy! I’m so glad this place is pet friendly.” She grinned.

“Good to meet ya. Quite a gal you’ve got here.”

Dean slapped her ass and I cringed. I couldn’t exactly duck into Sam’s side, since I wasn’t his sister.

“Oh, yeah.” Dean smiled. “She’s a pistol.”

Sam flinched, and I stifled a snort. He was beyond pissed, the irritation dancing over his face was proof enough.

“So, did you already check out that apartment? The one for rent?” Jo smiled at me over her shoulder.

“Yeah. Yes, loved it.” Dean hummed.

“It’s got great flow.” I added.

“How’d you get in?” The landlord squinted at us.

“Oh, it was open.”

“Now, Ed, um, when did the last tenant move out?”

“Oh, about a month ago. Cut and run, too. Stiffed me for the rent.” He sighed.

“Well. Her loss, our gain! Cause if Deano loves it, it’s good enough for me!”

Sam and I shared a look, and Dean slapped Jo’s ass again. I shuddered. I caught the minuscule anger flashing behind his expression, but it was still gross to watch. I felt like I was gonna puke. Sam gave me a sympathetic smile.

Jo pulled out a wad of cash. “We’ll take it.”

“I’ll flip you for the sofa.” Jo turned to Dean as he finished cleaning his gun.

“Does your mother even know you’re here?” Dean spat back.

“Told her I was going to Vegas.” Jo grabbed the folder off the table.

Sam was sitting at the end, cleaning his shotgun. Dean was sitting on the table, his back to Jo. I was sitting on the table, opposite of Sam. I had my legs crossed and my new gun in my lap.

“You think she’s gonna buy that?”

“I’m not an idiot.” Jo spat. “I got Ash to lay a credit card trail all the way to the casinos.”

Sam and I shared a look over Dean’s shoulder.

“You know, you shouldn’t lie to your mom.” Dean chastised. “Shouldn’t be here either.”

Jo looked to Sam, expecting support. Sam met her eyes and said nothing as he continued to work on his shotgun. She huffed and turned to me. I shrugged, holding the gun in my hands and slowly flipping it over and over.

“Well, I am.” She snapped. “So untwist your boxers and deal with it.”

“Where’d you get all that money from, anyways?” Sam spoke.

“Working at the Roadhouse.”

“Hunters don’t tip well.” I got the courage to speak, too.

“Well, they aren’t that good at poker, either.” She smiled.

Dean’s phone went off and he climbed off the table so he could fish it out of his pocket. He flipped it open and put it up to his ear.

“Yeah?”

His face drained of color and he looked straight up at Jo. Jinx let out a howl, sensing his panic.

“Oh, hi, Ellen.” He walked around to my end of the table, lips curled up.

Jo went right at him as he held the phone to his shoulder. “I’m telling her.”

Jo hissed something back, and he looked ready to jump. Sam shot up, and I put the gun aside and swung my legs over the edge of the table, facing Dean and Jo.

“Don’t you fucking dare.” Jo glared.

Dean put the phone back to his ear. “I haven’t seen her. Yeah, I-I’m sure.” A beat. “Absolutely.”

Jo shot Dean a cute little smile as he shut the phone, and he had murder in his eyes as he stared her down. Sam glanced over at me, and I shrugged.

“This place was built in 1924. It was originally a warehouse, converted to apartments a few months ago.” Jo had the blueprints open in front of her, and she was flipping a pocket knife around.

“Yeah? What was here before 1924?” Dean was pacing.

“Nothing.” She shook her head. “Empty field.”

“So, most likely scenario, someone died bloody in the building, and now he’s back and raising hell.” Sam didn’t look up from his own papers.

“I already checked. In the past eighty two years, zero violent deaths.” She shrugged. “Unless you count a janitor who slipped on a wet floor.” She turned and glared at Dean. “Would you sit down, please?”

Dean pulled out the chair next to me and sat on it, backwards. “So, have you checked police reports, county death records-”

“Obituaries, mortuary reports, and seven other sources. I know what I’m doing.”

I frowned.

Seven other sources? Where’d she get those?

“I think the jury’s still out on that one.”

Sam bit back a smile and I had to scratch my nose to hold myself together.

“Could you put the knife down?”

She did as he asked, and the tension, along with the bickering, was becoming unbearable.

“Okay!” Sam cleared his throat. “So, uh, it’s something else then. Maybe some kind of cursed object that brought a spirit with it.”

“Well, we’ve gotta scan the whole building then. Everywhere we can get to, right?” Jo looked between the three of us.

“Right. So. You and me, we’ll take the top two floors. Sam, get the first, Olive take the second.” Dean stood.

Sam and I nodded, and Jo scoffed.

“We’d move faster if we split up.” She got up and got in Dean’s face.

“Oh, this isn’t negotiable.” Dean had an irritated smile on his face.

“You know, I’ve had it up to here with your crap.” Jo spat.

I looked down at the floor, then up at Sam.

What do we do?

He gave me a small shrug.

I don’t know.

“Excuse me?”

“Your chauvinist crap. You think women can’t do the job!” She accused.

A snort escaped my nose, and she side-eyed me. Sam scratched his cheek, looking away. Dean gave his annoyed smile again.

“Sweetheart, this ain’t gender studies.” He shook his head. “Women can do the job fine.” He looked my way and shrugged. “Hell, I trust Olive with my life. She can do the job, I know she can. But amateurs can’t. You have no experience.”

She rolled her eyes, and I cleared my throat. I got up and pulled an EMF meter from the duffel on the table and called Jinx over.

“I’ll take her.”

Dean nodded, and I pressed a quick kiss to the side of Sam’s head.

“See you guys soon.”

The door busted open, and I rolled over, now fully awake. Jinx barked, and I realized she was curled up next to me. Dean had taken the couch, and I had fallen asleep on the floor, leaning next to him. Sam must’ve moved me to the bed.

“Where’s the coffee?” Dean grumbled.

“There are cops outside.” Sam’s voice rang out, and his panic was clear.

I sat up and rubbed my eyes. “What?”

“Another girl disappeared.”

“Shit.” Jo hissed.

“Alright, let’s move.” Dean clapped his hands.

“Wait, I’m not dressed.” I complained.

“You’re staying.”

“What? Why?” I stumbled out of the bed, socks sliding on the clean floor.

Dean caught me by the elbows and steadied me. “Get dressed. Take Jinx for a walk. Go get some coffee.” He pulled his wallet out of his pocket and handed me a twenty. “Be safe, okay? Love you.”

I blinked, trying to get my eyes clear. “Love you too.”

He kissed my head and gathered his things. Sam pressed a kiss to my forehead, and Jo gave me a soft smile.

“Be careful, guys!” I called as they walked out the door.

Sam and Jo were looking over the notes, and I was digging into the history of this part of Philadelphia, which was proving more work than I had anticipated. Dean slid back into the room and shut the door behind himself. Jinx jumped up and ran to greet him.

“Teresa Ellis. Apartment 2F. Boyfriend reported her missing around dawn.” He spoke as he bent down to pet Jinx.

“What about her apartment?” Jo looked up.

“Cracks all over the plaster, wall, ceiling. Ectoplasm, too.”

“Well, between that and the hair you guys found in the vent, I’d say this fucker’s coming from the walls.” Sam sighed.

“Yeah, but who is it?” Dean began to pace. “Building’s history is totally clean.”

I huffed as I stumbled upon something. “We’re looking in the wrong place.”

The three of them turned to squint at me.

“What?”

“We’re next door to a prison. Moyamensing prison. Built in 1835, torn down about forty years ago. They used to execute people by hanging them in the empty field.”

“Which is where this building was built.” Jo put it together.

I nodded. “Well, then, we’ll need a list. All the people executed here.”

“I’ll see what I can dig up.” I turned my focus back to the laptop.

“I’ll call Ash, see what he can get.”

“A hundred and fifty seven names?” Sam groaned as we scrolled down the list.

“We’ve gotta narrow this down, or we’ll be digging up graves for the next month.” I pinched the bridge of my nose.

“Yeah.” Sam sighed.

Sam noticed something on the list and tapped my hand. I stopped scrolling and looked up at him.

“What is it, Sams?”

“Herman Webster Mudgett…” He clicked on the name with a frown.

“Yeah?” Jo asked.

“Oh, shit…”

“Wasn’t that H.H. Holmes’s real name?”

“You’ve gotta be fucking me.” Dean came and sat next to us, eyes on the screen.

“Oh my god.” I breathed out as I pulled up a search on him. “He was executed at Moyamensing. May seventh, 1896.”

“H. H. Holmes himself…” Sam sighed. “Come on, I mean… what are the odds?”

“Wait, who is this guy?” Jo’s eyebrows were furrowed.

“The term multi-murderer.” Dean sighed. “They coined it to describe Holmes.”

“He was America’s first serial killer. Before anybody even knew what a serial killer was.”

“Yeah. He confessed to twenty seven murders. They could only confirm nine, some of the people he claimed to have killed were still alive, and the police put the death toll at over two hundred.”

“Oh, and his victim flavor of choice? Pretty petite blondes.” Dean grunted. “He used chloroform to kill em.” He squinted as he began to think. “Which is what I smelled in the hallway last night. At his place, police found human remains, bone fragments, and long locks of bloody blonde hair.”

“Well, Jo.” I hummed. “You sure know how to pick em.”

“We just find the bones, salt them, and burn them. Right?”

I shook my head as I scrolled through the article. “Not that easy. His body is buried across town, but it’s encased in a couple tons of concrete.”

“What? Why?”

“Story goes that he didn’t want anybody mutilating his corpse. Cause… ya know… that’s what he used to do.”

“Guys, we might have an even bigger problem.” Sam noted.

“How does this get bigger?”

“Holmes built an apartment building in Chicago. He called it the Murder Castle. The whole place was a death factory. Trap doors, acid vats, quicklime pits. He built secret chambers inside the walls. He’d lock his victims in, keep them alive for days. Some would suffocate, others would starve to death.”

“Fuck. That means Teresa could be alive.”

Dean sat up straight. “Alright, we need sledgehammers, crowbars. We’ve gotta smash these walls, anywhere thick enough to hide a girl.”

“Okay. How are we doing this?”

“Jo and I will take the top two floors. Olive, I want you with Sam. You two check the bottom floors.”

I sighed. “It’ll be faster if we split up like we did last time. I’m not blonde, chances are he won’t come after me.”

Dean shook his head. “Not taking any chances.” He turned and shared a look with Sam.

Neither said a word, but I knew what was going on.

We protect them, no matter what.

Sam gave the slightly nod.

Of course.

“Okay. Call us after you finish checking out the southeast wall.”

“Will do, Jo. Be careful.” I hung the phone up and turned to Sam with a heavy sigh. “They haven’t found shit either.”

He sighed and swept the EMF meter over my head. “What if we’re wrong? What if he doesn’t hide his victims in the walls?”

I shrugged. “I dunno, Sams. We’ve only got a little left. If nobody finds anything, we’ll reassess.”

He nodded. “Alright. Come on.”

I heard the sound of hurried footsteps before I saw anything, and I squared my shoulders, ready to take somebody on. Dean rounded the corner and slammed into my shoulder, sending me stumbling backward into Sam.

“Hey!”

“De?”

He turned back to us, face pale. “He’s got Jo.”

“What?”

“I wasn’t with her.” Dean began to panic. “I left her alone. Damn it!”

“Hey, hey, hey.” Sam tried to calm him. “We’ll find her, alright?”

“Where?” Dean growled.

“Inside the walls, Dean.”

“We’ve been inside the walls all night! None of the other girls were there, she won’t be either!”

“Okay. Come on.” I grabbed his hand and began to tug him toward the stairs.

“What are you doing, Olive? We’ve gotta-”

“Right now, we’ve gotta calm down and reassess the whole situation. Maybe we got something wrong, maybe we missed something. Either way, we won’t find Jo right now, not like this. We need to calm down first. Okay? Let’s go.”

“Maybe we got Holmes’ MO wrong.” Sam spoke calmly. “We just have to take a beat and think about this.”

Dean was pacing. “Yeah, well, we’d better think fucking fast.”

I sighed. Dean was totally freaked, because he thought this was his fault. No matter how this ended, he was going to blame himself. His phone rang, and he flipped it open.

“Yeah.”

He stopped cold and looked ready to burst into tears. I squinted at him. He put the phone on speaker and set it down on the table.

“You lied to me. She’s there.”

“Ellen-” Dean tried.

“No! Ash told me everything. Man’s a genius, but he folds like a cheap suit. Now you put my damn daughter on the phone.”

“She’s gonna have to call you back, she uh… she’s taking care of some lady business.” Dean gritted his teeth.

“Yeah, right. Where is she?”

The three of us stared at each other, each calculating.

“Where is she!”

“Look, we’ll get her back.” Dean blurted.

Sam and I glared with wide eyes, shocked.

“Get her back? Back from what?”

“Ellen, the spirit we’re hunting, it took her.” He explained.

“Oh my god.”

“She’ll be okay. I promise.” Dean spoke, and it was more than a promise.

This was an oath. He was swearing right now.

“You promise.” She growled. “That is not the first time I’ve heard that from a Winchester.”

“What?” I spoke up, now confused, and angry with her accusatory tone.

Sam knocked my arm and shook his head. I sighed and he nodded me over, pushing his laptop my way. I squinted at the blueprints of the murder castle and sighed.

“If anything happens to her…”

“It won’t. I won’t let it. Ellen, I’m sorry, I really am.”

“I’m taking the first flight out. I’ll be there in a few hours.”

The line cut off, and Dean let out a small string of curses. He turned to us with gleaming eyes.

“Hey.” I caught his attention. “This isn’t on you.”

“There’s nothing you could’ve done, don’t beat yourself up.” Sam spoke softly.

“Please tell me you’ve got something.”

“Look, you look at the layout of the Holmes murder castle, there’s all the torture chambers inside the walls, right?”

“Right.”

“But there’s one we haven’t considered yet. The basement.”

What Sam had shown me now clicked.

“This place doesn’t have a basement.”

“No, but there’s an old sewer system that looks like it hasn’t been touched-”

“Let’s go.” Dean cut me off and picked up his car keys.

Sam swept a metal detector over the street as we walked. Dean had the shovel in his hand, and I had the backpack with our weapons on. Jinx tugged on her leash. If we died down there, she was safer above ground than in a haunted apartment. Sam caught something and looked, beckoning for us to follow. I hooked a finger on Dean’s belt loop as we followed the trail through an alley, and into an empty field. Sam stopped, and the metal detector let out a steady squeal.

“Here.”

Dean went to work, digging faster than I had ever seen. I shared a look with Sam. It took Dean four minutes before he hit metal and dropped to his knees. Sam dug with his good hand, and I went at it with both, feeling dirt crunch its way under my fingernails.

“Come help, girl.” Dean whistled.

Jinx made her way next to Sam and went wild, dirt flying behind her.

“Alright, here.” Dean stopped us and pushed at Jinx once we hit a metal trap door.

I dug through the backpack and handed Sam a shotgun first. He cocked it, and I handed another one to Dean. Sam looked around, making sure there was nobody watching. Dean tied Jinx’s leash to the bar of the door and patted her head. Sam planted a kiss on Jinx’s head before heading down.

“We’ll be back, girl.” I whispered as I fished out the last shotgun.

She whined, and I checked the flashlight before following after the boys.

I heard Jo, clear as day, trying to scream. I pushed Sam’s foot, and he grunted, getting the message. Dean reached the clearing first and got to his feet, followed by Sam.

“Hey!”

Dean’s voice, and then a gunshot. Another girl screamed.

“Jo!”

“I’m here!”

Dean looked around, scrambling to find something. I spotted a bar of rebar and snatched it up. My teeth cracked in my jaw, and I groaned as I pushed Dean aside. I wedged the bar into the opening of Jo’s compartment with a deep breath.

“Ol-”

“Go help Sam.”

“Are-”

“Go help Sam.” I closed my eyes and took another deep breath.

The boys became background noise, and a low growl resonated in my throat. I balanced myself before turning and gripping the bar. I pulled as hard and fast as I could, and another growl ripped its way past my mouth. Jo squealed as the door popped off.

“Boys!” I shouted, getting their attention so I could hand the bar off.

I helped Jo scramble to her feet with a heavy sigh.

“Okay, are you alright?”

“Been better.” She eyed my fangs, but said nothing about them. “Let’s get out of here before he comes back.”

“Actually, I uh…” Dean turned with a huff as Sam helped Teresa get free. “I don’t think you’re leaving here just yet.”

“What?” Jo’s eyes went wide.

“Remember when we said you being bait was a stupid plan?” I asked, scratching the back of my neck. “Well, right now it’s kinda the only one we’ve got.”

The three of us turned to Sam. He had Teresa in a hug. She was shaking. He gave a pout and a bitchface, and I sighed. Dean shrugged.

Jo sighed. “Fine.”

Jo sat in the middle of the chamber. She was silent, but she was trembling. She had her arms wrapped around her knees, but was taking deep and steady breaths. I didn’t see Holmes until he materialized behind her. I made a mental note to not rely on these glasses.

Holmes got closer, and closer, until he was standing right behind her.

“Now!” Dean shouted.

I lunged forward to tug Jo to safety as Sam and Dean shot at the walls. Bags of salt unfurled, trapping Holmes in a perfect circle. Jo shook in my arms as Holmes began to pace, screaming in terror and mumbling gibberish.

“Scream all you want, you dick! There’s no way you’re stepping over that salt!” Jo turned and howled.

“Alright. Come on. Let’s go, we’ve gotta get Teresa out of here.” Sam whispered, guiding us out.

I sat in the grass and scratched Jinx’s chest. She was sitting between me and Sam. He was standing with Jo at the entrance of the sewer, looking down into the darkness.

“So. This job as glamorous as you thought it would be?” Sam teased.

“Well, except for all the pee-your-pants terror, yeah. But the girl’s gonna live a life because of us. It’s worth it.”

“Yeah.” Sam and I agreed. “It is.”

“Hey, what if somebody finds that sewer down there? Or a storm washes the salt away?” Jo pointed out.

Sam grinned. “Both very fine points. Which is why we’re waiting here.”

“For what?”

The beeping of a truck backing up went off, and Sam broke into a smile. I got to my feet and slid into his side as we watched a cement mixer back into the field. Jinx barked, and I handed her off to Sam as I guided Dean.

“For that.”

I beckoned with my hand, and then made a fist. He stopped right over the sewer entrance. Dean hopped out of the cab with a proud smile on his face. He and Sam set up the mixer right over the entrance.

“You ripped off a cement truck?” Jo was astonished.

“We’ll give it back.” I grinned as the cement began to pour.

Dean threw an arm over my shoulders and sighed. “Well, that oughta keep him down there til hell freezes over.”

I shifted, uncomfortable. Jinx was sprawled over my lap and Sam’s. Her haunches were pressing on my bladder, and I felt like I was gonna pee myself. Dean was in the driver’s seat, and Ellen was next to him, in the passenger seat. Jo was to my left, behind Dean, and Sam was on my other side, behind Ellen. She was staring straight ahead, jaw set. Dean kept glancing her way, looking horrified.

“Boy, you… you really weren’t kidding about flying out, were you?” He chuckled nervously.

She said absolutely nothing, and Dean glanced at me in the rearview. I looked up at Sam, who was also uncomfortable.

“How about we listen to some music?” Dean tried, and flicked the radio on.

Before the first string of lyrics could come on, Ellen turned it back off. Sam and I looked at each other again, and Dean did the same, begging for help. I shrugged, and he sighed.

“This is gonna be a long drive.”

Ellen had Jo by the shoulder, and the three of us scrambled to follow.

“Ellen? This is my fault. Okay? I lied to you, and I’m sorry. But Jo did good out there, I think her dad would be really proud.”

Ellen turned around with a snarl, and the three of us skidded to a stop.

“Don’t you dare say that. Not you. I need a moment with my daughter. Alone.” She snapped.

I gulped as Sam and Dean exchanged a look over my head. Sam pulled me along as they trailed out of the Roadhouse. We leaned against the car and said nothing. We couldn’t hear them fighting, but we knew it was going to be bad. There was a strangled cry, and the four of us, including Jinx, perked up. Jo stormed out of the Roadhouse, shot Dean a glare, and kept walking.

“That bad, huh?”

“Not right now.” Jo snapped.

“What happened?” Dean tried. “Hey, talk to me.” He reached for her arm.

“Get off me!”

He backed up. “Sorry. I’ll see you around.” He turned back to us with a confused look on his face.

“Dean!” Jo called. “It turns out my dad had a partner on his last hunt. Funny, he usually worked alone… this guy did too, but… I guess my dad trusted him. Mistake. Guy screwed up, got my dad killed.”

“What does this have to do-’

“It was your father, Dean.” Jo hissed.

“What?”

I felt my heart drop, and Sam gasped.

“John got my dad killed.”

Dean talked again, but I couldn’t hear it. I squirmed away from Sam and stormed into the building. I ignored him as he called after me. I slammed a hand down on the bar and leaned forward, catching Ellen’s attention.

“Look.” I started, tears already forming in my eyes, throat aching. “I am so sorry that my father cost your husband his life. I really am. John was everything I never want to be. But my brothers?”

The tears became too many, and they began to stream down my cheeks.

“My brothers are a completely different story. Those boys are nothing like John. Those boys would do anything for anybody. The second time the three of us hunted together, Sam put himself between a wendigo and three innocent people, even though he knew it would only buy them seconds. Dean ran through the tunnels…” My voice broke. “Defenseless. Just to get them out alive.If saving Jo meant putting their own lives down, they would do it. Without hesitation. So I’m really sorry about what my father did. But don’t you ever think, not even for a second, that my boys wouldn’t die to save someone else.”

Ellen blinked, staring at me. I sniffled, wiped my tears, and backed up.

“That’s all I needed you to hear.”

I stumbled out of the building. Sam and Dean were on the porch. Jo was nowhere to be seen. I fell into the boys, shaking. Neither said anything as they held me.

“Let’s go home.”

I went with 20, since I’ve actually done a variation for 42 for Indruck before.

Prompt 20 from this list: My amazing partner just dumped me. Please come home with me for the holidays and pretend to be my partner.

“DUCK I NEED HELP!”

Duck’s used to his neighbor and friend entering his house without knocking. After all, he does much the same to him. But the panicked tone is enough to send him tumbling off the couch.

“Ow. What’s up, ‘Drid?”

“Oh, I’m so sorry.” Indrid drops to the floor to check on him, and Duck waves his hand dismissively to show he’s fine, “I’m just, it’s, I realized another horrible part of Derrick dumping me.”

Duck sits up, facing his friend as the thinner man continues, “The few times I spoke with my parents since I started dating him, I bragged about how wonderful he was. Goodness knows they’d criticized me enough for everything else, at the very least it felt nice to tell them my relationship was going well. And now I get to go home in a week for the holidays, without the wonderful boyfriend I told them all I had. It’s going to make everything worse.”

Duck nods sympathetically. He’d been the first person Indrid told about the break up, Derrick leaving him abruptly two weeks ago after revealing he’d been dating someone else at the same time until he could make up his mind about who would make the better.

He’d apparently said Indrid needed “too much work” to be the winning partner. Duck keeps hoping to run into the guy so he can give him a piece of his mind (and tell him to be glad it’s Duck, and not Aubrey, who’s confronting him because she is pissed).

Indrid is weird, sure. He can be absentminded, messy, can leave sketches scattered across his floor for weeks. But he’s funny, thoughtful, and Duck has pictured him without clothes more than once, wondering what it would be like if it was him drawing the high, faintly cracked noises from him on the other side of the wall.

But more than any of that Duck always gets a strange sense of belonging when he comes home in the evening and sees Indrid’s apartment lit beside his own, still dark one. Indrid is home, next door, and that means things will be okay.

Duck would have given anything to be in Derricks place.

“Duck, I need you to come with me and pretend to be my boyfriend.”

Duck should have put some specifications on that statement.

“‘Drid, you full well I can’t lie well enough to pull that off. And ain’t they gonna notice I’m nothin’ like the guy you told ‘em about?”

“I kept everything vague to decrease the chances of them finding something to disapprove of. You won’t need to lie, Duck, please I’ll,” Indrid’s gaze darts around the room, his red glasses sitting on his forehead allowing Duck to enjoy the light brown of his eyes, “I’ll design your next tattoo for free, I’ll pay both our internet bills for a year, I’ll, ah, I’ll-”

“Whoah, whoah, ‘Drid, you ain't got to do anythin like that. We’re friends, we help each other out.”

“So you’ll do it?” Indrid bites the inside of his lip.

“How long would it be?”

“Five days, six if we hit bad weather coming back up here. That wouldn’t take you away from work too long, would it? Or do they expect the part time rangers to cover the holidays?”

“Nah, the center is closed on Christmas. And I’m pretty sure Juno wants a few extra hours anyway. I’ll ask to be sure, but think I oughta be able to get the time off.” He looks back at Indrid’s face. There are bags under his eyes, the result of the semester and graveyard shifts at a coffee shop. His strange, wide smile is tentatively trying to spread across his face. It’s the first time since the break up he’s looked hopeful.

“Yeah, what the hell, can’t let my friend be lonesome for the holidays.”

Indrid makes a delighted noise, flapping his hands, “Thank you!” He throws his arms around Duck, and Duck returns the hug. Indrid loves his hugs (most people love Duck’s hugs, but Indrid’s opinion tends to take up the most space in his mind).

He’s doing his friend a favor, and that makes the fact this is a terrible idea worth the risk. And hey, five days paling around with his friend in some fancy seaside town will be fun.

Juno: You know that’s a terrible idea, right?

Juno: Pretending to date Indrid is going to make for one heartbroken Duck and you know it.

Duck: It’ll be fine

Juno: How long have you had a crush on him again?

Duck: A year. And we stayed friends the whole time because I fucking knew when to keep it to myself. And I can keep keeping it to myself because his friendship means more to me than my fucking dick.

Juno: ……..

Juno:...... Okay, but don’t say I didn’t warn you

Duck tosses the phone on the bed as he finishes packing his suitcase. Yes, he’s had a crush on Indrid for awhile. And yes, by the time he realized just how intense the crush was, Indrid was in a relationship that made him happy, and the strength of the crush was overwhelmed by the desire to not make Indrid’s life harder. So Duck kept those feelings to himself, focused on being Indrid’s friend, including putting in a good word on his behalf to their landlord so he could get the little studio apartment next to Duck’s one-bedroom.

Who knows, maybe spending so much time in close proximity will get rid of the crush….

…………….Or it will make it ten times stronger Duck muses during his turn at the wheel. It’s the west coast, so there’s no snow, but rain patters on the windshield as they drive down I-5. Indrid is humming along with the playlist he put on, finishing up the last of the meal they grabbed from Dairy Queen. He’s been intermittently hand feeding Duck fries so he can keep driving.

He also does a thing where eagerly and licks the spoon while eating his Blizzard and Duck is afraid he might hit the guard rail if he doesn’t stop staring.

“How did we meet?” Indrid asks somewhere near Sacramento.

“Uh, think Dani introduced us, right?”

Indrid nods, “That’s what I thought. We’ll need to have our story straight, but it seems easiest just to describe our relationship as truthfully as possible.”

“You mean we ain’t tellin ‘em we me when I rescued you from an evil goat?”

Indrid “humphs” crossing his arms, “I did not expect to tackled at the petting zoo. But I appreciated the rescue all the same.”

“Thought Aubrey was gonna wet her pants laughin at you.” Duck giggles at the memory of Indrid flat on his back with an extremely hungry goat on top of him.

They run through increasingly ridiculous things to tell Indrids family; that they met on a botched bank robbery, they got trapped in an elevator together, their characters fell in love during a game of D&D and it spread out into their real lives, and so on until Indrid is doubled over with laughter. It would be so easy, feel so natural to reach over and squeeze his hand or stroke his face as they both come down from their giggling fits, but Duck knows better than to trap his friend in a car with unwanted affection.

By the time they reach Carmel, it’s well after ten at night. Indrid drives the last leg, explaining that the house numbers can be tricky to see. They arrive at a stately three story house four blocks from the beach.

“Right.” Indrid sits in the front seat, key in his hand but showing no desire to reach for the door, “here goes nothing.”

They carry their bags up to the house, which is all dark save for the porch light. Once they’re inside, Indrid slips off his shoes, Duck following suit and immediately spotting why.

“Who has this much white carpet?”

“My parents.” Indrid grumbles.

They tiptoe towards the stairs, and in spite of the fact they’re expected guests, Duck feels like they’re teenagers slipping in after curfew. The bedroom Indrid leads them to is bland.

“My, they really did take it all down.” Indrid sighs, setting his suitcase on the floor.

“This was your room?”

“Yes. I wonder what they did with all the art and posters. I liked a lot of them. And I’d lay money that all of Brad’s sports awards are still up somewhere. They always preferred those to my art.” He sighs as he changes into his pajamas, then slides under the floral bedspread.

Duck didn’t bring pajamas. He just sleeps in his boxers.

“Um” He points at himself in an attempt to indicate the problem. Indrid goes completely still, looking him up and down.

“It’s alright, Duck. That doesn’t bother me. Come on” he pats the mattress, flipping back the covers, “I’m cold and you’re a spaceheater disguised as a man.”

Duck snorts,settles beside him, “No, you’re just an icicle that got an art degree.”

Indrid barks out a laugh, sets his glasses on the bedside table “Touche. Goodnight, Duck.”

“Night, Drid.”

The light goes out and Duck nestles under the covers. Should he roll over so his back is to Indrid? No, that might seem like he’s hiding something. But rolling towards him could be too much, seem like this is real instead of a trick they’re playing.

“Duck?” Indrid whispers.

“Yeah?” He rolls over, finds Indrid on his side facing him.

“Thank you. For coming with me. The, the next few days may be a bit awkward.”

“‘Drid, I wasn’t expectin anythin else. Not after eveythin you told me about your folks.”

“I know but, well.” Indrid takes his hand, toying with his fingers, “I’m sorry in advance for anything they say. Or do. Or imply. Or-”

“‘Drid.” Duck takes their joined hands, holds them against his chest, “You ain’t gotta apologize to me for shit they might do. I knew what I was gettin into when I agreed to this.”

“Thank you.” Indrid says again. He looks so tired.

“Go to sleep, icicle.”

Indrid smiles in the darkness, and shuts his eyes. He keeps his hand in Ducks, humming softly when Duck pulls the larger quilt over them. Their hands stay linked as Duck sinks into the pillows and a deep sleep.

Indrid towels himself off absentmindedly, eyeing the china-shop decor of his once lovely room. Duck volunteered to venture downstairs in search of coffee for them (Indrid trusts three people to make his coffee sweet enough: himself, his friend Barclay, and Duck). Indrid woke up first this morning, found Ducks head resting against his shoulder. He took his time studying the lines of his face, wondering if Duck would let Indrid draw him. Ideally, nude.

Maybe asking his friend who he has a raging crush on to join him on his trip was a bad idea.

He’d realized his feelings for Duck about four months ago. But he was happy with Derrick (well, until the last two months before the break-up, when he’d suddenly gone cold around Indrid), and knew it was common to get crushes on people even when dating someone. Besides, he and Duck were close friends; Duck made him feel safe, didn’t judge him for his quirks, was funny and charming in his own quiet way. So what if he occasionally pictured him while masturbating, imagining what it felt like to kiss him on every inch of his body?

There’d been a temptation to ask Duck out in the days after the break up. But his friend would no doubt assume Indrid was treating him as a rebound, and Duck deserved to feel truly wanted. Now it might be too late.

The door swings open and Duck shuts it quickly behind him.

“This is a fuckin labyrinth.”

Indrid chuckles, “Couldn’t find the kitchen?”

“No! Thank fuck we got a bathroom attached to this place or I;d go to take a piss and you’d never fuckin see me again.”

“If it’s any consolation, you don’t need to worry about a Minotaur unless my brother is up.”

A silver bell rings and blinks, “Does your family use a fuckin dinner bell?”

“Yes.” Indrid finishes dressing as Duck checks his hair in the mirror, “and it means it’s time to face the family.” He holds out his hand, “stay close; I’d hate to lose you in the maze.”

Duck hesitates, then grabs his hand, and they head downstairs.

His parents and brother beat them there.

“Is that really what you’re wearing out today?” His mother asks when they appear.

“Hello to you as well.” He and Duck sit side by side, and he only relinquishes Ducks hand in order to pass dishes.

“So,” His father eyes Duck, the scrutiny in the gaze making Indrid wince automatically, “you’re Indrid’s boyfriend.”

“Yep. Name’s Duck, and it’s real nice to meet y’all.”

Brad, his brother, snorts, “Duck?”

“It’s a nickname, oh, thanks darlin.” He smiles when Indrid hands him a cup of coffee.

“Indrid says you’re interested in...environmental science, yes?” His father continues.

“More or less. Done a lot of work in forestry and botany and such. Goal is to be a full time ranger in a national park or somethin.”

“I don’t know why we even have those; why the fuck are we preserving a bunch of trees when that land could help enrich the economy.”

“Shut up, Brad.” Indrid glares.

“Indrid, manners. Besides, your brother has a point. All that land could be a boon for mining and development,”

“With all due respect, uh, Mr.Cold, public lands are one of the best ideas we’ve had as a country. And they bring in lots of money to places that wouldn’t get it otherwise. Hell, back home in Kepler, most of the money comes from tourists visitin the national forest.” Duck chews his eggs thoughtfully, “Plus, screwin nature only comes back to bite us in the end.”

“At least it’s a degree that has a potential job that comes after it.” His mother stares pointedly at him and Indrid groans.

The rest of breakfast goes much the same, and Indrid pulls Duck from the table as soon as he’s done eating.

“Right, that was awful.” Indrid sinks onto his bed.

“And you didn’t eat anythin.”

“I had toast.” Indrid snips back.

“One piece. Come on, darlin, what kind of boyfriend would I be if I let my sweetheart starve?” Duck catches the pet names this time, coughs, “sorry, figured better to keep up the game in the house, in case someone can hear us.”

Right, of course. Duck’s being practical. He doesn’t really think of Indrid as his darling.

“There somewhere in town you like?” Duck settles beside him, voice gentle, “It’s okay if there ain’t. Can even brave the labyrinth and grab you leftovers if you need me to.”

Indrid meets his eyes, and gingerly rests his head on his shoulder, “Well, there is one place…”

The outdoor mall is obscenely cheery, Christmas trees covered in shiny baubles and carols blasting from storefronts. Signs tout the perfect gift for that special someone, and Duck imagines himself wandering from salesperson to salesperson until he finds the thing that could show Indrid just how much he cares about him.

After a leisurely breakfast in a tiny, scruffy cafe (indeed, the only scruffy store amidst the pristine, wealth soaked chains and boutiques) in which Indrid scarfed two cinnamon rolls the size of his head, they wander arm in arm, window shopping and people watching. Indrid relaxes incrementally, and keeps casting strange, affectionate glances Ducks way.

In spite of the chilly weather, they opt to go to the beach, finding it mostly deserted. Indrid shows him a patch of tidepools, and proceeds to ask a dozen questions about what he’s seeing. Duck does his best, though ocean life isn’t his specialty.

“Oooh, hello little friend.” Indrid is on his stomach, leaning over one of the pools with a hermit crab in his hand, “your shell is so pretty.”

“Uh, ‘Drid, you might wanna keep an eye on that-”

Splash

“Wave.” Duck tries not to laugh at his friend, who now looks like a surprised, damp cat.

“Oh dear.” Indrid looks at his soaked top half and shudders, “that is going to be unpleasant to walk home in.”

“Here, take those off.” Duck unzips and doffs his jacket, unbuttons his green shirt and hands it to the taller man, “That oughta help until we get back.”

Indrid, skinny and shivering, takes the shirt and slips it on. His fingers fumble and Duck steps forward and begins buttoning it for him.

“You don’t-” Indrid starts

“I want to” Duck finishes. When he buttons the last one, he looks up and finds their noses nearly brushing.

“We should head back.” Indrid murmurs.

“Yeah.” Duck drops his gaze, taking a step back, “lead the way, darlin.”

Indrid hops off the rock onto the sand, offering his hand to Duck so he can do the same. Duck supposes they don’t need to hold hands on the empty beach.

They end up holding them all the way back to the house.

It all comes to a head at dinner the next night.

“This is low even for you, bro.” Brad grins.

Indrid rolls his eyes, “What is?”

“Bringing a fake boyfriend because your skinny ass got dumped.”

The little bit Indrid’s eaten threatens to come back up. Duck is still, save for the chewing on the inside of his lip.

“I don’t know what you are talking about.” Indrid responds coolly.

“Friend of a friend on Insta said in a group text that he knows your ex.” Brad looks over at their mother, “Apparently Indrid is too stupid to know when he’s being strung along, and too much of a dud to actually keep the guy.”

“In that case” His father turns to Duck, “how did you end up involved in this?”

“Probably paid him.” Brad sips his beer and Indrid growls.

“Actually” Duck says quietly, “I came because Indrid asked me to. Couldn’t say no to the most amazin guy I know. Indrid’s perfect and Derrick was shitty to him. Just cause we ain’t had time to put a label on things don’t mean I ain’t crazy about him. And for your information” he stares down Brad, “that ‘skinny ass’ is the nicest lookin ass on the entire coast, and you are the shittiest siblin’ I’ve ever had the displeasure of meetin’.”

“How dare you?” His mother hisses and Indrid takes that opportunity to bolt, certain Duck will follow him. As he’s halfway up the stairs he hears Duck drawl, “Mom always said money can’t buy class. Thanks for the real-time demonstration.”

By the time his friend enters the bedroom, Indrid is huddled on the bed, trying not to cry.

“Shit, ‘Drid, I’m sorry, that was outta line of me but I can’t, I couldn’t sit there and let ‘em talk to you like that. I know you got your reasons for not speakin up, but you don’t deserve to have no one takin your side.”

“It’s not that. I can’t, Duck, how could you say those things knowing full well we aren’t together? Do you have any idea how badly I’ve wanted to believe you feel that way about me? That’s the most loved I’ve felt in months and I know it was a lie.” He buries his face in his hands, glasses denting his skin.

“Hey, goofus.” Duck nudges him until he looks up, “you’re forgettin the part where I can’t lie.”

The gears of the world grind to a halt, and in a frozen moment in time Indrid processes a dozen realizations at once.

“You do like me.” He whispers.

“No shit, darlin. Indrid, I’ve been into you for months, but I didn’t wanna push you away by tellin you and makin’ you uncomfortable. I meant every goddamn word, and that all barely scratches the surface of how bad I want youMOphhhm.”

Kissing Duck is a hundred times better than he ever imagined, the two of them tangled up before they even fall fully backwards. Warm fingers tangle in his hair and Duck whimpers beneath him, arching frantically into Indrids touch.

“Fuck me.” Duck pants when Indrid lets him breathe.

“Not here. I, I think we should go somewhere else, leave early. They don’t want me here, not really, we could go home, rent a hotel room, anything, Duck, goodness please let’s get out of here.”

“It was an exclamation goofus, this room is a boner killer if there ever was one. But yeah, gettin gone sounds real fuckin good to me. I’ll let you take the lead, sugar.”

“You promise?”

Duck kisses his nose, “Wherever you wanna go, darlin. I’ll be right there next to you. I promise.”

Coming Home (Fourteen)

The Iron Man nearly died, and the new stations couldn't cover it enough.

A chopper full of soldiers had gone down, it's tail end blown off by a rocket or a missile or a lucky shot from some jerk with a gun-- no one knew, and honestly no one cared why the helicopter had gone down carrying six soldiers.

All they cared about was that it hadn't actually gone down.

The chopper was plummeting to the earth, screaming may day may day, soldiers scrambling to hold onto something-- anything--praying for salvation, for mercy, for the families they were going to leave behind--

And then a sonic boom and a red tinted flash, or maybe it was a red tinted flash and then a boom, and the Iron Man had appeared from seemingly no where, coming up under the chopper and throwing the full power of it's repulsors into slowing the choppers descent.

The soldiers had lived, every one of them with nothing worse than a bruise and a scrape to show for their adventure, but the repulsors on the Iron suit went out at the last minute and it took the full weight of the chopper smashing it into the desert floor.

By the time more military personnel got there to help-- and probably to capture the suit-- it had powered back on and blasted away into the sky, wobbling and sputtering but still going too fast for the base to scramble jets to intercept it.

But everyone knew the robot, or suit, or whatever it was-- almost died being crushed under that helicopter.

Sam knew it too, so he was sitting in the lab waiting for Tony when the Iron Man suit came in for a landing through a secret passage that opened up on the far side of the garage.

He sat and waited patiently as the suit seemed to dismantle itself, robot arms from the ceiling pulling various pieces off, the boots locking into a platform and opening up panel by panel until Tony could step out of them and stumble down the stairs to collapse in a chair, holding onto his chest.

“Tony.” Sam spoke from the dark corner and Tony jumped, his wings opening in alarm and then closing just as quickly. “Are you alright?”

“I'm fine.” Tony said warily. “Just a little sore.”

“Mmhmm. And were you ever going to tell us about this?” Sam motioned to the now blank spot where the suit had disassembled and lowered into the floor. “About whatever the hell this is?”

“Eventually.” Apparently satisfied that Sam wasn't going to yell at him, Tony pulled up a hologram of a different suit, inputting information from this last mission in to tweak a few details about the armor.

“You’re building another one?”

“Yeah. Yeah I am.” Tony was typing rapidly. “Gotta improve, Sam. Gotta make this better. Obviously there are a few design flaws. Repulsors should have been able to handle that weight no problem. I don't know what happened. Design flaw. Gotta fix that.”

“A few design flaws? Tony, you almost died today! A helicopter landed on you! We had to watch that on TV! Live coverage, knowing it was our Alpha that may or may not make it out of there!”

There was the anger, Sam’s voice rising a few notches as he stood, carrying over a few ice packs he had brought down from the kitchen. “This has to stop, Tony. What the hell are you doing?”

“What the hell am I doing?” Tony repeated, grabbing the ice packs and holding one to the bruise on his shoulder. “I am making sure I am never helpless another day in my life.”

Sam opened his mouth to yell again, but then he stopped and nodded slowly. “Okay, okay Tony. Why don't you tell me what you mean by that.” he pulled a chair up and put the other ice pack on Tony's back, holding it still while rubbing one hand up and down Tony's arm comfortingly. “Make me understand, alright?

Tony relaxed a fraction when Sam didn't snap at him, when the anger rolling off the Beta turned into something calmer. “Sam.” he licked at his lips. “Sam, I couldn't help myself when I was in the cave, you know? Anyone of you guys would have made it out of there, but it took me three months to even get close to an idea of how to get out of there. I want to be angry at Bucky or at Rhodey for taking so long to find me, but the fact is, I couldn't help myself, so what else could I do except wait on someone else to rescue me?”

“I don't agree with that at all.” Sam said quietly. “But keep talking to me.”

“I feel like--” Tony looked down at his hands. “I feel like I was just living in this bubble. My family is made up of some of the most dangerous people in the world, and I called myself Alpha when all I really am is your landlord and your tech guy.”

“God, where do I begin to tell you what's wrong with that idea?” Sam sounded upset, but he still motioned for Tony to keep talking. “Don't stop now, alright? Tell me what you are thinking.”

“I'm thinking that now that I have my suit, none of things will ever be true again. I'm not the weakest person in the family, I'm not an Alpha playing house when I don't deserve the title. In my suit, I'm the Alpha the team needs, and the Alpha this family deserves.”

“What about when the suit comes off?”

“I don't-- I don't know.” Tony shrugged. “I don't really want to think about-- Sam I don't know if I--”

“Hey.” Sam dropped the ice pack and turned Tony's chair until the Alpha was facing him. “Tony. You were always the Alpha we needed. You are lying to yourself if you think any one in this family would have survived without you here for us.”

“Right.” Tony snorted and tried to pull away but Sam cupped his jaw firmly.

“When Nat and Pepper were with you the other day, did you feel like you needed your suit to be there with them? Did you think you had to be armored up? Like you had to hide behind something?”

“Well no but--”

“That's because you don't.” Sam’s wings opened, covering Tony in a soft blanket of red. “You don't have to hide. You don't have be in a suit to be our Alpha, to be the one we want. But if you need this-- if you need to be a more active part of the team, if you want to lead us out on the field just like you do at home then by all means--” he gestured towards the hologram of the new suit. “By all means make that suit perfect. I'll fly into battle behind you every damn time, Alpha.”

“I get it, in a way. You’re the only one of us besides Pepper who doesn't have something enhanced to keep us safe, and honestly Pepper is so terrifying when she glares, I don't think she needs anything else.” Sam chuckled, and Tony smiled with him. “I mean, Nat is lethal, Clint is a crack shot, Cap is--well you know. And Bucky? Even his feathers are literal weapons. I have my suit, Banner has the Hulk-- and you don't have anything. I understand why you feel like you need the suit.”

“Really?” Tony hated that he wanted to cry, god he was so tired of crying, but he hadn't expected this from the Beta. He had expected anger, and maybe disappointment, but not…understanding. Not the outright acceptance. Not the way Sam was smiling into his eyes, looking like he loved Tony just as much now as he ever had.

“Yeah, Tony, I do. But you have got to realize, that you don't need the suit to be our Alpha. You are Tony Stark whether you are flying that thing or not.”

“You’re really okay with all this?” Tony asked again. “With the suits and the--” he tapped his arc reactor and Sam put a hand over the cool metal.

“Of course I am. We all are, or we all would be anyway, if you just talked to us. You’re trying to go through this alone, pushing us away when all we want to do is understand what you’re going through. We’re a family Tony. You’re our Alpha, and the team, the family will follow you anywhere.”

“Oh.” Tony blinked at him a few times. “I-- I love you, Sam.”

“I love you too, Tony.” Sam leaned in and kissed his cheek, nuzzling into his neck and Tony sagged against him gratefully. “Can I stay down here with you for a little bit?”

“I would just… I would just love that. Please stay with me.”

“As long as you want, Alpha.”

Bruce peeked his head into the lab an hour or so later to check on Tony, and saw the Alpha sat firmly on Sam’s lap, head bent over his tablet, frowning as he tried to work something out.

The Beta was trailing fingers through Tony's multi colored wings, scratching down Tony's back, and urging him closer for short kisses every few minutes.

Bruce smiled to himself and left them in peace.

“Thank you for letting me know, JARVIS.” He said to the ceiling. “It's good to see him opening up.”

“You are very welcome, Doctor Banner.” the AI replied.

“JARVIS.” Tony raised his voice. “Send everything you’ve discovered about Obadiah Stane to this tablet, please, including everything about the serum?”

“Who is Obadiah Stane?” Sam asked, his thumb rubbing slow circles on Tony’s legs. “How do you know him?” He pushed his nose into the Alpha’s neck and hummed quietly, smiling when Tony leaned back into it.

“Obadiah Stane. I think he was the one who held me in Afghanistan.”

“He what?” Sam straightened. “How do you know that? Why do you think that? Where did you find his name?”

“Steve told me that he had come across the video of the Winter Soldier--” Tony coughed and Sam squeezed him sympathetically. “In some files from the SHIELD data dump Natasha did a few years ago? So I figured it must have been in the HYDRA side of the files, and when I went looking for it, retracing Steve’s steps to find the video, I came across that name. It's just been a shitty few weeks, so I didn't put any more thought into it until recently.”

“Do you know him?”

“Well.” Tony’s laugh sounded bitter. “I knew him as Uncle Obie up until I was about nine years old. He worked with my dad for a long time and then one day… one day he was just gone. I was young, so I didn't really think about it.”

“And how did you figure he was the one in the cave?”

“I feel like I recognized his voice. It's very distinct. Deep and slow and has this disconcerting way of sounding like he is joking when he might be deadly serious. I remember never knowing if Uncle Obie was teasing me or not, and it made me uneasy, as a kid. And you know, he just… he knew a lot about my family. Told me I looked like my mom. Said he was surprised when he heard I presented as an Alpha. Asked me if dad had pumped me full of something else to turn me into an Alpha.”

“Wait.” Sam shook his head. “What do you mean, something else? What were you given initially?”

“That's my question exactly.” Tony pulled up a diagram on his tablet. “It's been bothering me ever since he said it, so I had JARVIS look up some information on him for me, digging through old sealed files to figure out exactly what happened to him.”

“So what happened?” Sam tucked Tony a little closer to his chest. “Did you figure it out?”

“Yeah, it turns out that dear old Uncle Obie was fired from Stark Industries for illegal human experimentation involving unsanctioned medications with potentially fatal side effects.” Tony stared down at his screen. “Dad fired him, and had him charged, but after six months, the charges were dropped and Stane dropped off the map. No one has heard from him since. Nothing on any alias, or anything that looks like him at all.

“Back up. Illegal human experimentation? On who?” Then Sam shook his head. “Oh no, no Tony. He experimented on you?”

“Yep. Stane stuck me with a needle right around my ninth birthday. Nice of him, hm? Just loaded a syringe with a prototype and jabbed it into my thigh. Worst birthday present ever.”

“So what did you inject you with?” Sam asked worriedly. “Do you even know?”

“I had JARVIS run some tests on my blood.” Tony showed Sam the chart. “And he found something pretty interesting. I can't believe it never came up in a blood test before, but I guess it's not like standard blood tests show anything more than my blood type and my Alpha-gender, huh?”

“I recognize this compound.” Sam pointed to a list of chemicals. “Why do I recognize it?”

“Because it is the basic building blocks of the same super soldier serum that turned sweet, scrappy, ninety pound Steve Rogers into the Star Spangled Ass Kicking All American Hero that he is today.” Tony tapped on the screen. “And it is everywhere in me.”

“Jesus Christ.” Sam was stunned into silence for a full minute and Tony just waited for him to make the connections. “Jesus Christ, Tony, you got shot full of super serum? What does this mean? If you were that young, why didn't it tear your body apart with a transformation? Why aren't you huge like Cap is? Or Bucky? I don't-- I don't--” Sam was scrambling to make sense of it. “How the hell did this happen?”

“Best I can tell from some of dad’s old research-- he was trying to refine the serum into something like a super vitamin. Not really for like… normal people, but for kids with illnesses that would stunt their growth, adults with chronic pain, that sort of thing.” Tony shrugged. “It was a noble endeavor, but not one that he could perfect enough to make it safe.”

“Were you sick as a kid?”

“Nope. Healthy as hell. Seems like Obie maybe just wanted to see if it would work on a healthy kid. Probably so he could sell it as a steroid. So he jabbed me with it, Dad found out and lost his mind. But when nothing happened to me for six months, he just moved on. Scrapped the program and went back to building bombs. And instead of charging Stane and calling media attention to what he was working, Dad let him go because I was fine. No harm, no foul.”

“So what does this mean for you?” Sam questioned. “It didn't affect you presenting as an Alpha, right? If anything, I would think it nearly stopped you from presenting as an Alpha. You aren't huge like Cap is, you are actually a little on the small end of Alpha’s in general. You obviously age. I mean, Cap is stuck looking like he is in his late twenties, but you are mid thirties and--”

“I'm forty two.” Tony said with a small smile. “But thank you. And thank for calling attention to my size, really appreciate that.”

“--alright, forty two.” Sam kissed his cheek. “And you’re the perfect size for my arms, Tony, which is all that matters. So how has the serum affected you, if it did anything at all?”

“Well.” Tony tapped his chest. “What are the odds I would survive not only a shrapnel blast, but having a battery hooked to my chest, and then an arc reactor? I'm not even sure Cap would have survived that. So what if I was too young when Stane injected me, and instead of changing me physically it sort of… altered my immune system? I still bruise like a bitch, but I can't tell you the last time I was sick. How did I survive Afghanistan and building a reactor in a dirty cave without getting an infection? Or gangrene or something equally horrifying?”

“So what?” Sam ran a hand around Tony's waist and up his ribs to settle over the arc reactor. “You only survived because of the injection? Do you think Stane knew you would survive? Why he switched from having them torture your body to showing you the-- to trying to torture your mind?”

“I--” Tony took a deep breath. “It would make sense. Break my mind, not my body?”

“Shhh.” Sam hushed him. “You’re not broken though, are you? Just hurt.”

They were silent for a while, and Tony put his tablet away, closing his eyes and letting himself relax into Sam’s arms. “I've missed you know.”

“I've missed you too, Tony. We all have. Steve and Bucky especially. You’ve got to fix that. You know I believe in letting everyone cope how they need to, and taking the time to heal yourself before trying to heal everyone else, but enough is enough, Tony.”

“I know. I know I have to talk to them, to both of them. I will.” Tony promised. “I'll talk to them as soon as they are home. I can't say I'm happy that they left, but I understand. I am hiding away here doing what I do best and designing ridiculous tech. They are doing what they do best-- being soldiers. I get it.”

“Yeah, well you and the soldiers might be dealing in your own way, and Nat and Pepper have each other, and I don't know who Bruce talks to, but every time I’ve talked to him, he’s been… fine.”

“Bruce is a rock.” Tony nodded. “The strongest out of all of us. And I pretty much cried my body weight in tears those first few nights and he stayed with me during, so maybe he isn’t as concerned about me going off the deep end.”

“Well then. You need to make up with Clint now.” Sam said firmly. “I know you and Bruce are fine, and you and the girls have made up and spent time together. Please spend some time with him. He needs you, Tony, needs his Alpha. Don't put him through losing another one. That will break him.”

“Damn it.” Tony shook his head. “I never meant to hurt you guys. I was just dealing with all this the only way I thought I could, and I ended up--”

“Don't do that.” Sam interrupted. “No one is blaming you for reacting this way, Tony. You don't have to apologize for not coping well. Just take the steps to make it right, huh? Reconnect with the people who love you, open up solid lines of communication, move forward with your healing.”

“You’re such a good counselor.” Tony teased. “Should I pay you for this session?”

“Why don't you just kiss me instead?”

Ninjago: Guardian of Space Ch1

So, what I'm doing here, I'm doing a story line for my own Ninjago story based on my oc Sonya. She is a guardian of Space. This will take up to a new story after the new Season for Ninjago! So, that being said, let's start out with how this will start for the story now!

The characters that will be in this, I'll list them down for each chapter that I will put into. But I can't promise to not make any sad scenes, but I will do it for dem tears now!

Characters

-Kai -Lloyd -Cole -Zane -Nya -Jay -Sensei Wu(Still a baby!) -Pixal -Sonya -Star Phoenix

Alright! Here goes nothing!

Chapter 1: Mysterious Star

Down to where Ninjago is, everyone was doing their daily things when it was night time. The Ninjas were partying at the place where they hang out and sing. After they finished singing their son, the blue ninja, Jay decided to go outside to grab some snacks from the store he was planning on going. Until he heard some sounds that made him feel unsafe around him. He looked everywhere to find where the sound was coming from. He found nothing and then heard the sound stopped. He sigh in relief that he thought he was imagining things, but that's proven him very wrong for that he was suddenly snatched from the air and was gone at the sight. Kai, the red ninja, was feeling concerned about Jay's return with the snacks. Cole, the black ninja, he thought Jay was just taking his sweet time to grab the snacks. Lloyd, the green ninja, disagree to this and decided to go outside to see if he was going to come back. Nya, the grey ninja(Okay I don't know what her color is, so help me out!), was worried for Jay. She and him were together so that got her to the point of what has happened along Jay's return. Maybe some traffic problems that he is going to help on. For Zane, the white ninja, he decided to call Pixal to scan the entire Ninjago map to see if Jay was anywhere. Pixal scanned, but no trace or sight of him anywhere on the map that Jay may be on. That's brought them the feeling of worry. They all got ready and set off to go find Jay anywhere in Ninjago city. Zane searched in the glacier mountains, Cole searched in each stores that Jay may have gone into, Kai searched at the docks to see if the ships that left might have taken Jay, Lloyd checked the forests of each places that he can go to to find if he was in there, Nya was at the Bounty, flying it while checking where Jay may be at in the air. Pixal was with her, too to help navigate where the next destination they will be heading to next. For their searches, they found nothing at all. They were highly concerned that someone or something may have taken Jay right when he left to go to the store. Maybe he was taken right when he was about to leave outside, or it may be before he was taken, or after he bought the snacks. Lloyd thought about the store keeper that may have seen what happened to Jay. They all followed that idea to talk to the people who may have spotted for what happened to Jay. They spoken to each landlords, neighbors, store keepers, and almost all of them never seen Jay. But, the same store keeper and a hotel customer may have spotted something they wish they hadn't seen. The customer was the first to say. Hotel Customer: Listen, this may sound crazier that what I said to my friends. But what I heard, it was like a sound of a beast, or something that was on the street. I thought it was the neighbor's dog that may have ran out and stayed at the front, so I had a go to check it out. Turns out, there were no dogs outside, but Jay. Whatever was following him, it made him feel afraid around his surroundings. I kept a watchful eye, and thought maybe he's got this. So, I headed off to bed, but before I could do that, I heard his screams. I ran back to see what happened, but he was already gone in a second! That was the last time I saw him walking towards the store. That's pretty all I got so far. Kai: He felt worried and dismissed the Hotel Customer back outside, and then he saw the Store Keeper come in to speak to them Alright, your turn. Store Keeper: She went in and sat on the chair, trying to calm down for a bit and then was ready to speak This...This is going to probably not make any sense for what happened to your friend. But believe me, this will sound crazy. Cole: He built up confidence to hoping what she will be talking about Try us. We'll listen to whatever you have to say so that we can find our friend. Store Keeper: Her expression changed to a scared look O-Okay. So, I was about to wrap up and close everything, but I saw Jay coming over and I had to wait. I grabbed my phone and texted my family that I'll be late a bit. After I finished that, I saw him looking around as if he was trying to see who was following him. I thought to myself that he may be just hallucinating, but...I wish I was the one to hallucinate all this. Lloyd: He motioned his hand to let her continue We're listening. Store Keeper: She gathered her confidence Well, from what I saw that happened...something grabbed him from the air and Jay was just...gone. It looked like a ghost snatched him up in the air and then was just...gone in a second! Well, I wish I can show you proof about it, but sadly I didn't. I hope you can find your friend. Thank you for your time. She gets up and leaves the room

Everyone was in the room, trying to think of what may have taken him. Nya: Thinks You know, it may be a ghost, but it's not possible for a ghost to just grab and go like that. Kai: We've been searching for two days and nothing has ever come up at all. We got the answers, but they are just when Jay vanished into thin air. Cole: He was agitated so he had to punch his hand into his palm When I find out who it was, either a ghost or whatever, I'll punch it right in the spot were it hurts! Lloyd: He places his hand on Cole's shoulder to keep him calm Calm down, Cole. Even of Jay has been kidnapped, he'll find a way back to us. No matter what, I believe in him. Also, Zane is on a look out for Jay just in case if Jay has returned. -At Zane's POV- He looks around still, but where he went to, he was at the exact spot where Jay was taken. Zane: He looks around the alley way and goes in there to see if Jay was around there. Still nothing at all. He sighs and begins to walk away There's nothing here at all. Guess I'll be head ba- He was cut off by the sound that Jay heard Zane looked around quickly, trying to see where it was coming from. As he remembered, he was pulled upwards into the air, so he looked up, trying to see where it's coming from. A portal suddenly opened and from the exact spot where Jay was taken from that night. Then out came was Jay! Zane saw him landed on the cement, and terror filled his expression to see his friend beaten almost to death. There we cuts around him, bruises, and blood were spilling out from the injuries that were weakening Jay. Zane ran over to help him while he called for backup. Zane: Calls them Kai! Cole! Anyone!? I just found Jay! Kai: He responded REALLY!? WHERE IS HE!? Cole: IS HE ALRIGHT?! Nya: WHERE ARE YOU AT RIGHT NOW?! Zane: I'm where Jay was taken from the night when he was going to the store, but we'll need to fix his critical condition quickly! For I fear, this torture is worse than like any other! Nya: Can we see him!? Zane: He hesitated, but he did it anyway and showed the current state Jay was in, and everyone gasped in horror We need to get him to a hospital now!! Time passed for the Ninjas, for they were completely scared for his recovery of whoever inflicted those injuries on their friend. Nya saw the doctor and got up first before the boys did. Nya: How is he? Is he alive?! Doctor: He'll be fine. There are some injuries that may have pierced through him, but it didn't aim for any organ parts of him. There is something weird though. He goes over to bring a silver bowl with a strange looking needles, but then it was shaped as a feather. These are some weird ninja weapons that are shaped like some sort of bird's feather. Maybe I can let you guys find out what material it is made of and where it came from. I'll be with others if you need me, but for now, go see your friend. They nodded and walked to the room Jay was in. His eyes were half open, at the same time, he was really hurt with a broken arm, and he had some cuts that were on his arms, legs, and his body. When they went inside, Nya sat beside him. She wanted to see how he was doing. Everyone else circled around him to see how he was doing as well. Nya: Hey Jay. How are you doing? Jay: He groaned a bit from the pain, but he managed to gather his strength to speak. I'm doing fine. Really. But, it still hurts. Kai: Did you get a good look of who it was? Jay: Kai, I was grabbed from the air and got knocked out! It felt like hours for us fighting! I couldn't even get a good look at them since they just warped and hid behind some pillars not being seen at all. He stops talking for a bit and relaxes his voice Anyway, I saw those daggers that were just homing onto me. I tried to hit them away, but the more I hit them, then more comes back to cut and stab me. Cole: Sort of like a hydra but instead it's these. *holds one of the feather daggers and studies it* Zane, can you find out what materials this feather dagger is made out of? Zane: I'll get right onto it. He takes the dagger and goes to the lab to melt down the materials off of it. Lloyd: Jay, you were gone about 2 days. How long were you there for? Jay: I don't know. It felt like almost about 5 hours. But, then it did felt like for a day or night. I don't know. Lloyd: Okay then. Then, can you remember anything that the kidnapper did or say anything? Jay: was silent trying to remember, and all he remembered were the cold dark aqua green eyes staring down at him and then the daggers form and about to attack him, he screamed and lashed out in fear I CAN'T REMEMBER! I CAN'T REMEMBER! I CAN'T REMEMBER!! He repeated that over and over, and his voice became from loud to low tone and he passed out

Everyone was shocked to see what just happened. Kai was upset and left the room, the rest stayed with Jay. Kai couldn't wait any longer, so he decided to go to the same spot that Jay was taken and brought back. He waited there for a day, waiting for something to happen, but never did happen. He gave up, heading back home when it was dark. As he was about to get to the Bounty, suddenly without warning, he was grabbed from underneath and pulled down, and was never seen again.

You walked down the street carrying your grocery bags and mentally patting your back for all the offers you had taken advantage of. It seemed like you’d be having a proper meal for the next few days instead of the instant noodles that you had grown tired of munching. Yes, being broke did suck. A lot. But it could be worse, right? If you wanted to have money, you just needed to get a job. Easy.

You snorted. Finding a new job would be anything but easy after you had left the last one the way you did, but you had to. How would you not leave after catching one of your students giving a blow job to your boyfriend in your own living room?

Mrs. Jeon had almost begged for you to keep tutoring and assisting her daughter with her English lessons, but every time you looked at her the only thing you could see were her lips around Chulmoo’s dick. Of course you couldn’t teach her anymore, so you refused her plea without giving any particular reason. What would you say? Sorry madame but I can’t keep teaching your daughter because she is an early slut and my boyfriend is a son of a bitch? Well, it was an accurate statement, but... not an option. Maybe, if you had known back then that she would spread fake rumors about you being really capricious and unprofessional, you would have given it a second thought.

You shook your head expecting that all those memories would fade away, but once that Chulmoo found his way into your mind, you couldn’t kick him out, specially when you had to see the rest of his stuff while packing them.

A mellow meow brought you back to reality. The same grey stray cat that had been wandering up and down your street the last two weeks greeted you rubbing her fur against your legs.

“Hey there!” you saluted happily, appreciating the distraction. “Did you smell that I bought cat food for you?”

She meowed again, like she had understood what you said and kept walking right beside you. Tough you looked kind of ridiculous talking to a cat that was not even yours, you didn’t really care. For the last weeks she had been the only company you had had so… you owed her more than any other human being around.

You reached your gate while still talking to the cat when two figures standing in front of your door attracted your attention, one of them already walking towards you.

“You, girl! I’ve been waiting for you for almost an hour! Who do you think you are to keep me waiting like that, huh?” cursed the big old man.

“Mr. Kang!” You faked surprise. “I had no idea you would be here, I’m sorry.”

You bowed politely, but it didn’t placate him at all. Mr. Kang was your landlord. He had been calling since the beginning of the month, probably to demand for you to pay the rent of his house. You imagined that was the reason, but you had never answered the phone so, you couldn’t be sure. But why would he call you if that wasn’t it?

“When will you pay me!? You didn’t pay the rent nor the bills of this current month or the last one! I want you to pay me now!” he stormed.

The pressure in your chest became a little too heavy when he listed all the things that you had to pay for. You had spent your last savings in the grocery shop. How would you pay for all that?

“Mr. Kang, please be patient with me…” you begged in a low voice, unable to look at him in the eye, “I don’t have the money yet…”

“Of course you don’t! Two months! I’ve been waiting two months for you to pay me, and you can’t even find a job!”

There it was again. Chulmoo and the reason why you couldn’t find any job as an English teacher. That fake rumor. Jiwha sucking your boyfriend’s dick…

You bowed and apologized again, hoping that he would take pity on you and give you more time, but mostly because you wanted to hide your watery eyes. You were ashamed.

“If you hadn’t left your boyfriend and your job at the same time you wouldn’t be in such a delicate situation. You’ve asked for it!”

His statement felt into your stomach like a punch, your tears were harder to hold back and you gave him a supplicat gaze. You understood that he had reasons to be angry, yet he had no right to torment you like that.

“Please, sir… give me until the end of this month… I’ll have the money. I promise…”

“I’ve heard that enough times already!” He was ruthless, and for a second you could almost feel the cold air of the night in your skin, while you were living in the street.

The second figure that was waiting in your door walked towards you slowly, unfazed by the situation, just looking at both of you like you were some kind of live show that he was not interested in.

“Excuse me,” he finally interrupted, getting your attention, “I don’t mean to interfere in your animated conversation but I’m in a rush and-”

“And who’s this guy?” roared the man in front of you. “Is he your new boyfriend? Is he going to pay all the money that you owe me?”

Your eyes were wide open. How would he assume something like that? Where, in the context of that guy’s sentence, could he find a hint to think he was your boyfriend?

“I....I… don’t know him…” you stuttered.

“No, she doesn’t,” he continued, maintaining his straight face, bored of the situation, “and I’m certainly not going to pay anything she owes you. I just need to have a couple of words with her so if you could-”

“Excuse me, kid,” mocked your landlord, “but you should learn manners and shut your mouth while your elders are talking so why don’t you-”

“Excuse me, sir!” grumbled the mysterious new guy next to you. “My name is Do Kyungsoo and I’m here sent by Mr. Kim Junseong. I need a minute with her before leaving and you’re making me, and my boss, lose our precious time. I don’t think he would appreciate something like that. Because you know who I’m talking about, right?”

A lump formed in your throat. Kim Junseong had sent someone to your house? One of the most important CEOs in Seoul needed something from you? Was that even possible?

As you could see, you were not the only one who recognized that name, because the angry man in front of you backed up a little and bowed apologetically.

“I’m sorry, I had no idea-” he was babbling.

“Well, you know now, so please, leave.” His gaze was fierce, and though he was younger and probably not as important as to make him leave your house, he still managed to impose his order.

Mr. Kang was leaving the place, still muttering something about being back soon when he made him stop in his tracks and stated in a serious tone,

“And don’t you ever dare to talk to me about manners when you were the one nagging a woman on the verge of tears!”

Your stomach flipped and you turned to look at him. Though you didn’t have any idea of who he was or what was he doing there you felt like you would always be thankful to him. You bowed and thanked him again, letting relief wash all over you.

“Thank you so much for what you did right now. If I can do anything for you just say it.”

When your eyes met his your heart skipped a beat. He was breathtakingly handsome. He was not really tall, but definitely taller than you. His skin was tanned and his features were huge. You could appreciate it since you were incapable of looking away from his lips, pillowy, tempting, inviting… you wondered how it would feel like being kissed by them.

He seemed to realize that you were staring because he readjusted the sleeves of the perfect black suit that hugged his body and coughed,

“Don’t thank me so fervently. He will be back. I didn’t fix your problem.”

Suddenly, the magic that surrounded him and kept you in awe disappeared and the tension and that annoying burden that you had felt a moment ago were back. Why did he say something like that? You knew he would be back, it wasn’t necessary for him to remind you so coldly that you were in trouble.

His big dark eyes were digging holes in yours since you didn’t know what to do. He was staring at you now, internally asking himself if you were going to say or do something.

“Well, if you’re not going to say anything I’ll say why I’m here.”

You looked everywhere, your hands still carrying the grocery bags, the cat, your bag, the door, his eyes, his lips…

He sighed.

“I’m looking for a tutor, an English tutor. Kim Junseong’s son will be having a break of his busy live in Seoul but he still wants to do something with his free time,” he lied, “so he wants to improve his English skills.”

You nodded vigorously and started to walk towards your front door, trying to reach your keys and telling him how much you would love to help him and what an honour it would be for you to tutor Kim Junmyeon, because you knew him. Because everyone, everywhere, did know who Kim Junmyeon was. Specially if you were a woman.

“No,” he cut immediately your enthusiasm, “I just came here because you are the first contact that I found when I looked for an English teacher in Namwon. I trusted that you would direct me to someone else.”

You were speechless. Why someone else? What was wrong with you?

“But… I’m an English teacher, I can do that…” you gulped seeing how the best option you had had in months was fading away.

“I need a man. A male teacher,” he stated cold as ice, as he wasn’t listening to your hidden plea.

“There’s…” you started, almost refusing to give away that chance, “there’s just another English teacher in this town.”

He nodded, waiting for you to keep going.

“He works in the primary school at the end of this street. He should be there if you go now but… he’s too busy already to accept another job. I know him.”

He half smiled and a shiver ran up and down your spine.

“I’m sure I will find a way to tempt him,” he stated.

He turned to leave but you spoke again before he went further away.

“Did I mention that I’m an English teacher, too?”

He revolved and looked at you, well, he checked you out, shamelessly, from head to toe, twice.

“You did, but it wouldn’t work.”

SEXIST! yelled your mind. You frowned and, this time, you let him go.

What an idiot.

He held the wheel tightly, trying to hide his anger. He couldn’t remember when was the last time that he hadn’t gotten whatever he wanted from someone. If he didn’t find in him the power to make people bow in front of him he would just mention the name of his boss and everything was settle down and ready for him to take whatever he wished. But not this time. This time a fucking school teacher from a town smaller than a thumb had rejected him, his boss and his check full of zeros that he was so sure would work.

When he parked his car again he took a couple of deep breaths before going out, ran his hand through his hair and checked his jacket. Perfect. Now or never.

He jumped out of the car, open the gate, as he has already done earlier that morning and walked towards the door, taking another deep breath before knocking.

When you finally opened the door he could read the surprise in your face, but it turned into a smile when he assumed you guessed why he was knocking on your door again. You had changed your clothes and your hair was down now. It made you look younger. Beautiful. In the back of his mind he still knew it was a bad idea.

“How can I help you?” you sang.

“You were right,” he admitted still furious but trying to keep his mind cold, “he turned down my offer.”

Your smile grew bigger. His hands itched in his pockets, he wanted to erase that smile. A good spank would show you where your limits were. He would show you manners.

“Ok… so?”

His eyes met yours. He didn’t have time for your games. He was not one to play with so he went straight to the heart of the problem.

“So I’m now offering you that job.”

There it was. That annoying smile again.

“Well… I don’t know if I’m interested…” you probed.

He scoffed. He was waiting for this moment. He would erase that stupid smile from your face,

“I don’t think you’re in the position to afford rejecting this offer. As far as I know you’re about to be homeless.”

The reality of his words hit you like a ton of bricks. It wasn’t like you didn’t know that already, but hearing someone else saying it out loud made it feel… real. Your smile died instantly, but for some reason, it didn’t feel as good as he expected.

You opened the door, defeated, and offered him to come in.

“I’m in a rush, I can’t lose my time chattering with you,” he looked for something in the inner pocket of his jacket and showed you a paper with a pretty high number written on it. The paper that he had used previously to allure the asshole who rejected him.

Your mouth fell open and, despite, you turned around quickly trying to conceal your reaction, he had already seen it. He smiled. You were sold.

“It’s a nice salary for a month, I have to admit it…” you voiced, still weak.

When you turned around again, still holding the paper, he was grinning, but there was something hidden in his eyes. It made your legs weak.

“That’s not a monthly salary. Is a weekly salary.”

This time you didn’t bother to hide your shock. He chuckled. You looked like an anime character with your eyes almost as big as your face.

“There’s a couple of conditions,” he started going back to his straight businessman face. “First: absolute discretion. Second: full availability, every hour of the day and every day of the week.”

Your voice seemed to had just gone away so you just nodded. If one of the conditions had been to walk on burning coals you would have still said yes. With that amount of money for a week of work you would be able to pay everything you owe to Mr. Kang in two weeks, and by the end of the month you would have enough to send some money to your parents. It was perfect.

“Perfect. Come with me then…” He instructed.

You stood frozen in the middle of your messy hall. Where were you going? Would you start teaching him immediately? You had nothing to work with.

He turned around and didn’t even look at you when he spoke again,

“Did you hear me?”

“But… But I can’t start working right no-”

“You’re not starting yet. I’m going to show you the way there. You’ll be tutoring him in his house. He won’t come here. Come on.”

“Wait, I’ll change my cloth-”

“You’re wasting my time,” he interrupted again.

What was wrong with him? Always interrupting you. And his obsession with time? Damn it!

“But-”

“You look perfect. Take your keys, close the door and come with me. Now!”

His expression looked the same. Emotionless. But there was something in his eyes, like a warning, telling you that you should not argue with him, so you did as he said and followed him to his car.

He owned a black elegant Maserati. You didn’t know a lot about cars but it looked expensive. He opened the passenger door for you. The car seat was comfortable and you fastened your seat belt while he seated right beside you. He drove easily through the streets of Namwon, and you paid attention to the itinerary, hoping that you would remember it for the next time. The car stopped in front of a place you knew well. It was an old hanok that had been recently reformed. Everyone in town knew about it. A long time ago a rumour had been spread telling that that house had been bought by a wealthy billionaire who didn’t know what to do with his money. Once it was reformed some meddlers had come around to see how it looked, but people had soon forgotten about it. It was easy to forget it existed since it was secluded. You had to admit that you had been one of those who wanted to see the result of the changes and had been tempted to come around a couple of times, but it was worthless since you wouldn’t be able to see the inside. You couldn’t believe that you were going to finally see how it looked. You were excited.

“Hey,” he called, “before we go in, I want you to remember about the conditions that we talked about.”

You nodded, understanding that he was worried about discretion. You were about to reach your belt but he stopped you holding your hand. The warmth of it contrasted with your cold one. You looked at your hands and then his eyes, waiting for him to say whatever he had to.

“There’s another condition for you.”

For you? What did he mean for you?

“You will have to dress a bit more modestly.”

He freed your hand and got out of the car. Modestly? He didn’t give you time to change your clothes and he expected modesty? What was wrong with him? Of course that shorts and a tank top were not the best choice to go meet your new student, but who’s fault was that?

He opened your door again and you wondered how could he act like a gentleman and a dickhead at the same time.

The duality of Do Kyungsoo, ladies and gentleman. Sexist!

The door opened and another man that you didn’t recognize came out and hurried to a car that was parked near Kyungsoo’s. They barely saluted each other since he knew that Yixing had an important meeting and he was heading to Seoul, so he kept walking expecting that you would follow him.

Right after entering the house he noticed a young woman walking downstairs in a rush. His first thought was that she had something to do with Junmyeon, and he wasn’t going to allow whatever that was happening. He placed himself in front of the lady and focused on her face. She was beautiful. Junmyeon’s type, for sure.

“Who are you?” demanded him in a non-friendly tone.

The woman gave him a skeptic look and spread her arms, showing him her uniform.

“The Postman,” she retorted.

You snorted. Sassy...

“Excuse me!?” roared Kyungsoo.

“Can I get you two a soda?” yelled from the door the man you had seen before with an annoyed expression, “I need to be in Seoul at four! What part of AT FOUR did you not understand?”

“I’m sorry, Mr. Zhang…” she begged, but her face looked more tired than mortified because of him yelling at her. She walked around the man in front of her and disappeared through the door with the one she had just called Mr. Zhang.

Two new faces came to the door, a man and a woman, and though you were feeling lost because of all those events happening so suddenly, you could tell who they were.

She was wearing a maid uniform, so she had to be the maid, and he was the man you had read about and seen on TV multiple times. Kim Junmyeon. They both walked downstairs and welcomed you,

"Hello!" greeted the maid with a huge smile on her face. She was cute. Really cute. You couldn't calculate her age, but judging by her innocent smile and the light in her eyes... she was young.

Kyungsoo didn't have time for her. He took Junmyeon's arm and dragged him inside to have a couple of words with him.

"Hey," protested his friend, "What's wrong with you? I wanted to talk with that beauty you brought with you. Is she some kind of present for me or something?"

Kyungsoo gave him a serious look to let him know that he wasn't joking.

"Who was the woman leaving a minute ago?" he demanded.

"God, Kyungsoo... Chill... She's Yixing's chauffeur, so get used to her being around."

He didn't trust his friend. First, there was this maid, then Yixing's chauffeur that he knew nothing about, and to put the cherry on top, he had just arrived with another young and beautiful woman to be his teacher. He wondered if he was cursed or it was Junmyeon who was the luckiest fucker ever.

"So, who's that? Did you find her jogging or something? Those clothes...." he bit his lower lip and checked you out, while you were talking with his maid.

"Dude," Kyungsoo punched his arm, "she's your new English teacher... but it's just temporary, till I find someone else."

His friend looked at him with an enquiring gaze but Kyungsoo spoke again, "If your father finds out that I'm letting, not one, but three women stay around you I'll never hear the end of it. Rightly."

“I’m gonna hug you!” smiled Junmyeon crushing his arms around him knowing how much it would annoy his friend.

When he walked away holding Junmyeon’s arm and forgetting about you, you couldn’t feel more uncomfortable, but it didn’t last long.

“Hi! I’m Oh Jangmi and I’m working here as a maid, as you can see,” she smiled while bowing.

You introduced yourself, bowing in her direction, and told her that you were supposed to be the new English teacher.

“So you’re going to work here, too?”

You nodded.

“That’s great! The girl who just left is Go Hayun, and she works as Mr. Zhang Yixing’s personal driver,”

“The Chinese man…” you assumed, and she nodded with a reassuring smile, like congratulating you for connecting the information.

“That man,” she pointed at Kim Junmyeon, “is Kim Junmyeon, but I’m sure you already know him. Of course, I’m not going to introduce Do Kyungsoo…” she giggled and you wondered what was so funny. She came a little closer and whispered, “but I can tell you that I heard the other two talking about him and they have an interesting nickname for him.”

She giggled again. You raised an eyebrow, intrigued, waiting for her to tell you.

“They call him Satansoo.”

Your blood ran cold and you stood still. Great news. They didn’t call him Angelsoo or Squishysoo. No. His friends called him Satansoo. His-Friends.

Your eyes were locked on him, watching his friend hug him, but when he returned your gaze you got goosebumps and swallowed the lump in your throat.

What the hell had you gotten into?

"We could have been like that, but our strings never got attached."

“I spoke with mom on the phone. You’re leaving Thursday night.” It was a gloomy Monday afternoon, and your brother came over as soon as he read your text. You decided that it was the best for you to move back to your hometown after contemplating for the past couple of months. “Thanks. I’ll start packing later. Don’t you have work, though?” you asked your brother. “Yeah, I do. But I’m worried about you, y/n. Are you sure you want to do this? You worked hard moving here to live a new life after you graduated university and moved here over a year ago.” your brother asked, tone full of worry “I’ll be fine. I’ve grown out of it.” you forced a smile “I’m gonna miss my little sister. Now I don’t have anyone to annoy and eat hot bar with at my favorite food stand nearby.” he pouted, trying to be sulky “Our favorite food stand.” you laughed as you opened the door to let your older brother leave for work “You sure you don’t need any help packing? I can stay over tonight to help you, really.” he said as he walked his way out the door of your apartment “No. I got this. Your little sister ain’t that little anymore.” you leaned on your front door as you smiled again, with even more force to show that you really wanted to be alone for a while “Fine. See you tomorrow morning.” your brother ruffled your hair as he walked his way to the elevator. He waved again as the doors opened for him to enter and head off to work You bit your bottom lip as you continued leaning on your front door for a couple more minutes. You then went back inside, closed the door, and headed off to the kitchen to make some tea. What actually happened for you to suddenly leave Seoul, despite it being the city of your dreams? You sighed as you sat down on your couch, putting your cup of tea on the coffee table in front of you before you could stretch your legs and just lie down on your couch. You stared blankly on your ceiling for quite a while, until you heard your phone ring. You were a bit startled, since you didn’t really expect anyone to call you by that time. All your friends had to go to work, and you just left your job two weeks ago, finishing your year-long contract. You picked up your phone to see a message from an unsaved number. “I don’t know if this is still your number. But I hope we can talk soon. Reply me when you can.” You definitely knew who it was from. You suddenly had flashbacks from exactly last year. “October 21st.” you mumbled. Yes, it was that day. The day you first felt butterflies in your stomach. The day you first thought would change your whole life after admitting you will die alone with 56 cats. The day you fell in love. “Hey, y/n! I want you to meet a friend of mine from college.” one of your coworkers and closest friends, Jina, gleefully said as she grabbed someone by the arm as they arrived at a nearby coffee shop from your workplace. He was quite tall, had golden, light brown hair, had beautiful eyes that resembled a puppy’s, and a very attractive smile. “Y/n, meet Donghyun. Donghyun, y/n!” Jina said brightly “Hello, Donghyun.” you smiled as you stood up from your seat and gave a side eye to Jina, who you thought was the only person you were gonna be meeting that night after a long day at work. “Hey, y/n. I’m really sorry about Jina, she seemed too enthusiastic about meeting a coworker of hers.” Donghyun shyly smiled as he looked down “No worries, Donghyun. I’m always up for meeting people, despite being quite shy on the first meeting.” you grinned, and gave a side eye again to Jina “Relaaaax! He just moved here two weeks ago from Daejeon. And he got a new job just a couple of days ago! Time’s moving fast for you right, bud?” Jina lightly slapped Donghyun’s arm playfully Donghyun was very cute, you thought. He kept looking down, obviously because he was blushing from all the tension Jina has been giving him for being able to go independent after graduating university. You all sat down on a round table, Jina seemingly forcing Donghyun to sit next to you for obvious reasons. Suddenly, Jina’s phone rang and stood up. “Oh my, I gotta go kids. My landlord has been bugging me about my lease even though I still have five months to pay for the place. See ya!” Jina dashed off and out of the coffee shop, leaving you and Donghyun dumbfounded and awkwardly looking around the coffee shop, and then to each other. Donghyun suddenly burst out laughing a bit as he saw your confused expression and you raised one of your brows up, trying to think what has made the boy suddenly laugh at you. “I’m sorry, it’s just that this was all so sudden.” Donghyun smiled, looking down on the table and then at you again. Your cheeks suddenly started heating up at how he looked at you, and you were not sure how you should respond. “No! Don’t even think about it.” you thought, until Donghyun continued to try not make things even more awkward “Okay, let’s start over. My name is Kim Donghyun and I’m from Daejeon. I currently work at Pressfield Publications as a staff writer, which is like, the starting point of this writing career... but I am working on it!” he smiled brightly. You were amazed by how he suddenly got enthusiastic about moving to Seoul. “Y/n. I’m a communications director as Greenfields, Inc., which is that huge building across this coffee shop.” you said as you reached out your hand, in hopes of getting a handshake from him. And well, it worked, and he grabbed your hand the second you reached out. His hands were so soft, touch so delicate, but you pulled out your hand once you felt like you were about to squeal as if you touched your idol’s hands at a fanmeet “So, how did you and Jina meet? And what did she tell you about me for her to even leave you here, with me, a stranger, at a crowded coffee shop?” you asked, as if you were giving him an interview on a celebrity gossip talk show. Donghyun couldn’t help but chuckle at your sudden burst of questions, which he thought was undeniably cute “Oh no. Even his laugh is cute. Code red… Code red…” you thought as you tried to keep your posture and be more professional or else he would think you had a motive, in which you actually don’t “Well,” he said as he stood up, “I, for sure, wouldn’t like to meet someone at a place that’s as crowded as here. Wanna go for a walk? We’re near Banpo Bridge, so we could just stroll around the nearby concreted riverside as we wait for the colorful lights to light up.” he said as he reached out his hand to you “Well. It could be worse, but, what the heck. I’d love to.” you absentmindedly grabbed his hand as he led you out of the coffee shop, forgetting the fact that you “shouldn’t” fall for him in any way. Before you knew it, both of you were walking by the riverside as you passed by a food truck, where your favorite snacks were displayed. You couldn’t help but go over the food truck and buy some for yourself, and called over Donghyun, who was at first hesitant, but was eager to try anything. As you were about to pay for the snacks you bought, Donghyun grabbed your hand, “I’ll pay. And don’t tell me no, because this counts as a first date for us.” You were shocked by his sudden utter of words, and he just smiled shyly as he paid for all the snacks you both devoured. You both then thanked the lady at the food truck and continued on your way to see the bridge light up. For some reason, you both were then talking about even the most random things. Like from how Donghyun wanted to become an idol at one point and learned the guitar, to you having to chase a random guy who snuck in the girls’ dorms at midnight at your old university. It was obvious you both had so much fun, and it felt as if you both knew each other for quite a long time. You both were starting to become very comfortable with each other as you both talked, but your phone rang and you saw your brother asking you where you were. You totally forgot you had dinner plans with him after two weeks of not seeing each other, even though you both worked in the city. “Aaaah damn it. Donghyun, I actually really need to go. I forgot I had dinner plans with my brother.” you said as you put your phone back in your purse Donghyun wasn’t looking at you. In fact, he was looking at something else that had caught his eye. “Donghyun? Are you o-“ “Shh. Look.” Donghyun said as he turned you around to face the Banpo Bridge. You never really thought about how pretty the lights were, in fact, you haven’t even seen any of the bridges around Han River light up at night. And yes, it was truly a beautiful sight. “Y/n. I want to see you again soon. If you will let me.” Donghyun said as he moved to your side while looking at you You felt your heart beating faster and slowly looked up at Donghyun “Okay.” you smiled as he smiled back, his eyes full of sudden affection. You ran off to catch a cab nearby without looking back at Donghyun, who was still standing at the same position he was in, making sure you were able to safely go to your destination. Back to the present, you found yourself sitting quietly on your couch while reminiscing that day, staring at a blank space by the corners of your window. You let out a deep sigh and closed your eyes tightly, letting a single teardrop fall from your eye. You opened your eyes again as you heard your doorbell ring and again, you were not expecting anyone to hang out with not anyone to visit you. “Y/n? I know you’re in there.”

Prologue, Part 1

Part 2

Home. There was no better place. If someone disagrees then they can fight me, honestly. I hate hospitals and I hate being away from my living space for longer than necessary, especially my bed. I have one of those beds that just like…hugs you. It embraces you into the world of dreams and nothingness and to be perfectly frank, my bed is the best place in the whole world. Moose thinks so, too, because I always catch him curled up and taking a snooze in the center of it. Technically he’s not allowed on my bed, but...it was more of my mother’s rule than mine. She doesn’t visit often enough for me to enforce it with Moose and life is too short not to enjoy a good bed. Thus, the first thing I did when I got home the next evening was curl up against my pillows with Moose. We didn’t sleep or anything, not a wink. We just laid there, taking in the comfort that was my bed and enjoyed some time together. Of course, Rene hadn’t left right away. She was worried that Moose would inadvertently hurt me in his excitement to see me. But hey, fifteen minutes later we were content as could be.

Rene had also not been exaggerating about making sure my apartment was ready for me, either. My cabinets were all full as well as the fridge. There wasn’t a speck of dust in sight and I could tell that she changed out my sheets by the fresh lavender smell that lingered in the air around the bed. Not that she needed to. I had always been particular about my bedding. Sheets have to be washed every week. Otherwise it was just weird. Still I appreciated her efforts. I couldn’t thank her enough for taking care of my home, but especially Moose. The little guy was barely over a year old and quite the handful when he wanted to be. I suppose that’s why I loved him so much. He forced me to be energized and be motivated to get up and do things. I even got organized and started being a lot more neat because of him. As a rambunctious puppy, he got into literally everything. I discovered the hard way that if you didn’t want your belonging to end up as chew toys and otherwise completely ruined, you had to keep your home neat. That meant not having a chairdrobe and putting my shoes in the closet instead of leaving them by the door. Moose was the light of my life and I couldn’t be happier to have him.

The little pooch whined from his spot beside me on the couch, turning his head and looking up at me with those lovable brown eyes of his. It had been about four days since I got home and I was losing my mind. I hated being cooped up. Hated it! Cabin fever was the worst, especially since technically I wasn’t allowed to leave my apartment. Rene would stop by everyday after work to check on me and take Moose for a walk, but I didn’t know if I could handle another day of pressing my face against my screened in windows just to get some fresh air. “You wanna go for a walk buddy?” I asked the little guy. Instantly, Moose jumped to his feet and leaped off the couch, prancing back and forth excitedly. His little dance was one of my favorite things about him. Every time he did it I would laugh because of the way his cute little butt would wiggle back and forth. Corgi’s were seriously precious. “Alright,” I laughed, slipping off the couch myself and walking towards my bedroom to change.

I slipped into a pair of calf length yoga pants and a switched my tank top out for a loose t-shirt that fell about mid-thigh. The weather was so nice lately that I wouldn’t need anything warmer. I did pause, though, halfway through putting on my new shirt. My eyes grazed the bruises that painted my left side from just under my armpit to where it disappeared past my waist band. I knew from memory the bruise stretched down to my knee. I had been told that when the bus flipped I had been standing, holding on to one of the bars overhead. It was the reason why my injuries were as bad as they were. I became a human pinball and the bus the machine. A shiver passed through me and I yanked the baby blue shirt into place.

If I was honest, I had been avoiding the news. I didn’t want to know about the rest of the passengers and I certainly didn’t want to know about the accident as a whole. By chance one morning while flipping through channels, I came across a reporting talking about the incident. The image of the bus was permanently seared into my brain now. The vehicle looked like it had been chewed up and spit back out by a giant or something. It was awful… There was very little doubt in my mind why so little of us made it out alive.

Moose barked suddenly, causing me to jump and look up at him. He was sitting anxiously in front of the door, eyes big and watery, practically begging me to get a move on. I laughed and shook my head at the little guy. “I’m coming, geez!” I reassured him. He whined and backed his little butt up against the door fully and barked again. So impatient that one. When we did finally walk out the door I was in awe of how good it felt outside! Fresh air was something a person needed and it was definitely something require in persona and not through a damn window screen. Locking up, I turned toward the staircase a few feet away and paused once again. A tall figure stood poised to mount the stair in the same direction as me, but his big brown eyes blinked at me in surprise. “Sehun!” I cheered happily, sauntering up to the shocked younger male.

“Why are you up?” he immediately asked, eyes scanning me from head to toe, though they paused on the bandage wrapped around my head. I was tempted to go out without it, but I’m pretty sure Dr. Zhang would beat me sideways if I disobeyed. He was super firm with his request that the bandage stay in place until I saw him next. The only times I was allowed to take it off was when Rene stopped by to change them. The first time I saw under them I almost passed out. There was a line of stitches that ran from just below my hairline on the right side that swooped down behind my ear, the hair there having been shaved. It was a gruesome sight made worse by the still black and deep purple bruising that was barely contained by the bandaging. I might have blushed out of embarrassment under his concerned gaze if my need to do something other than lay around my apartment wasn’t so dire.

I pouted up at him and crossed my arms. “My legs aren’t broken,” I huffed defiantly.

Sehun rolled his eyes and took a step back as he mirrored my stance, though when he crossed his arms they seemed to bulge against his sleeves. “No, but the rest of you might be. Does your doctor know you’re up and wandering about like this?”

“Ha!” I scoffed, “You say that like I’m about to do cartwheels or something.” When he only raised one of his eyebrows at me in response I sighed heavily and pouted more. “No,” I admitted.

“Then you should turn around and go back to bed,” he smirked, reaching out and grabbing me by the shoulders.

“I’m losing my mind, Sehun!” I whined, pushing his hands away stubbornly. “I can’t take another moment in there. The only time I get any fresh air these days is when I answer the door for Rene or have my face pressed up against the screens in my windows! I need to get out of there! I’m going stir crazy!”

Sehun laughed and shook his head at me before shrugging. “Fine,” he relented and jerked his head towards the stairs. “But I’m coming with you just to make sure you’re okay.” Before I can refuse his offer he leveled me with a firm look. “I was going out anyway, ____. You’re not getting rid of me either way.”

‘This guy’ I scoffed mentally, but smiled and acquiesced to his request.

The park we ended up in was the same one I took Moose to all the time. I really loved it there, almost as much as Moose did. Sometimes Sehun would bring his little cutie Vivi and we would let our dogs loose on the unused soccer fields. The breeze felt super nice and I couldn’t help but close my eyes each time it brushed past. “How’s work?” I asked him suddenly.

“It’s alright,” he told me thoughtfully. Sehun bent down and picked up a decent sized stick, waving it in front of an excited Moose before throwing it across the field. We laughed as the little guy bounded after it. “Right now we’re in the process of editing a large photoshoot we had a week or so ago. Honestly it’s been hard to concentrate.”

“Oh?” I questioned, looking up at him worriedly. Sehun was one of those guys that had a RBF (resting bitch face). Let me tell you with the looks that guy could give you, it’s a good thing looks don’t kill. Despite his stoic outer appearance the tall youth was actually a sweetheart. He was sassy and sarcastic, sure, but he had a thoughtful sweet side to him that he reserved for people he cared for. I was lucky enough to be one of those people, too, something I thank the heavens for. Honestly, I’m not good with people, which comes as a surprise to those who know me. The only way to describe it is that I’m good with people when I’m at work or I’m in school, because those are environments where I have to be around others. If it were up to me, I would avoid all life forms outside of animals. People just weren’t my thing. If Sehun hadn’t gotten locked out of his apartment and asked to use my phone to contact the landlord, we probably wouldn’t have ever spoken...at least on my part. I don’t initiate. Ever.

Moose came running back, dropping the stick in my lap and whining until I sent it flailing across the field again. “Well, I mean you were in the hospital and it was touch and go for awhile. We were all super worried, especially him. He was freaking out. I’ve never seen him so worked up...”

“Him?” I asked slowly. There was something pulling at the edge of my mind. Something important. I occurred to me that I was in the same park, in practically the same spot, as I was the day of the accident where my memories just ended.

Sehun turned to me with a confused look on his face. The worry that had taken root there since we had left the apartment building tripled in intensity. “Do you not remember where you were going that night?…,” he hesitated.

Youngjae:

specifically chose an apartment with enough space for a piano,,,,,,,which means his living room is just his piano and like a rug there isn’t any room for anything else,,,,,,

but that’s fine with him because he has his computer set up in the bedroom so he can play games and that’s all he really needs in his life youngjae is a simple man with simple hobbies

he also won’t admit it but he spent more money on coco’s bed than he did on his own (definitely waited for ikea’s end of year sale or something for that)

keeps everything pretty minimal in style, beige’s and whites. tries to keep his place tidy because he knows it would make his mother proud and he wants to leave as much open space for coco to play around

more dog toys in his apartment than there is furniture

the neighbors all know him as ‘debussy boy’ because in the spring/summer when youngjae has his windows open the neighbors can hear him practicing clair de lune and it’s such a relaxing melody that someone will shout “encore!” just to hear youngjae play it again

he’s also just a really sweet, mannered guy so most of the neighbors don’t mind his music and some of the moms keep asking him to offer piano lessons so they can bring their kids over to be taught by him

and that’s exactly what he does because hey, rent is getting higher and making some extra money on the side is never a bad thing

and before you ring his doorbell on sunday afternoon you check your hair and straighten your shirt like one hundred million times but when you finally do, youngjae opens the door and apologizes in a stutter for the mess (there isn’t any mess tho lmao)

and you follow him to the pretty piano in the middle of his living room and you’re like “where’s your tv? o:” and youngjae is like “no ,,,, room,,,,,,,,,,, i watch whatever i can on my laptop!” and you’re like “you must really love playing the piano, it’s like this apartment is dedicated just to this instrument”

and you don’t even mean to make him embarrassed, but youngjae has to hide his face for a bit because he’s blushing and once you both sit down on the bench you confess you don’t have the first clue about what you’re doing

and youngjae finally seems less shy, smiling and putting his fingers on the keys and teaching you slowly what sound each one makes

and the time passes so fast as you two sit side by side and youngjae’s voice is so gentle and his laugh makes your heart beat a little faster

and then you try to play something on your own, but you’re clumsy and suddenly youngjae puts his hand over yours, guiding your fingers along the keys

and only when you’re done does he realizes that you’re basically holding hands and he’s like “aH IM,,,,,,,,SORr,,,,,,y,,,,,,,,”

and he moves his hand away but you’re like looking down trying not to hide the fact that you’re really happy ,,,,,,,, plus his skin had been so warm

two shy cute people that obviously think “they’re so cute” about each other but can’t even look into each others eyes

and you thank youngjae for the lesson when coco starts weaving between your feet, nudging youngjae and asking him to take her on her walk

and youngjae is like “it’s no problem,,,,,if you want,,,,,,,,,you can come again,,,,,,,next week,,,,,,,,,”

and you’re like you know what ill go and that night you get introduced to bambam, who is apparently trying to attempt some kind of high speed dab balancing a bottle of water on his head and you’re like “why he’s doing that”

that jackson kid is like “oh, he’s doing it for instagram”

and as you continue being neighbors with bambam you find out he does a L OT for instagram

which is fine like,,,,,,,,,,,kids and their social media these days but before you know it you end up being asked by bambam himself for some help

and so you’re standing in his living room, holding up his phone and you’re like “are you sure this is a good idea?”

and bambam, who is attempting to do a handstand is like “anything for the internet is a good idea”

and you’re sighing like ok but if you come tumbling down im not going to catch you

and you start recording as he tries to lift both arms up at the same time to dab “upside down” which of course is a total failure like you predicted

and he goes falling legs, something sounds like it cracks and you’re like

“…………..bambam don’t move i think you might have broken your arm” and bambam whose just laying there motionless is like,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, “i can’t move,,,,,,,,,,,it hurts,,,,,,,,”

and you’re not sure if he believes the lie you’ve just told but the EMT shrugs and is like “it looks like nothing is broken, your boyfriend just has a fracture.”

and somehow you find yourself staying by his side in the emergency room and after the doctor has patched him all up you go out and get the two of you some coffees from the vending machine

the neighborhood kids adore him because they always beg him for piggy back rides or to sit on his shoulders

and he always stops whatever he’s doing to play with them and just be an overall cute angelic human being that we as people do not deserve

has that kind of personality that makes people give him stuff for free and when he thanks them they’re just like “oh wait there’s something else i need to give you wait here a second-”

anyone who meets him instantly wants to take care of him,,,,he’s soft

his apartment is really well organized which is surprising for his age,,,,, like his closet is color coded and he matches all the patterns with each other

and he cutely hangs his laundry out on the balcony like his mom taught him

and just like,,,,,,,he’s so sugary sweet and simple

buys fresh flowers for his living room whenever he can. that’s the kind of person he is

you see that all he has on is a pair of old sweatpants and a plain black t-shirt, sweat visible around the neck.

his movements though,,,,,,they’re far more smooth than you could have ever imagined. you can tell he practices a lot, he’s so good that you can barely see any mistakes

and yugyeom doesn’t notice you until the song ends and you (embarrassingly) unconsciously clap

and it startles him to the point that he lets out a small yelp, but with the faint light from the streets below he makes out your face and smiles

and he’s like “why are you up here?” and you’re like “no reason, i didn’t know you used the roof to practice?”

and you can see him get sheepish, scratching the back of his neck and he’s like “my room doesn’t have enough space, plus i don’t want to be loud with my music. it’s so nice and free up here.”

and you nod looking at him with a still mesmerized expression and yugyeom laughs a bit and he’s like “don’t gape like that, im nothing special” and you’re like no what?? you’re so amazing???/ i never knew you were THIS talented

and he laughs again, but he’s really happy to hear you say that and you go over and pass him a napkin from your pocket and you’re like “your sweat!!” and he gets blushy again but thankfully you can’t see it
