Arafinwe: *Knows only ancient Quenya*
Gil-Galad: *Knows a little modern Quenya and mostly Sindarin*
Elrond: Oh come on, I cannot be the only one who understands both of you! Where's Galadriel?

Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimli (Lord of the Rings) vs Gil Galad, Elrond, and Celebrian (Silmarillion)
I am going to cry. -🦊
Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimli propaganda: i likea them a lot :) • three dudes going on a road trip i hope nothing bond making happens • they can all braid each others hair • i don't know what the actual shipname is but gigolaron sounds funny youve opened my eyes youre so so so right. theyre just sooooooo. THEY ARE SO QPR FOR REALSIES. legolas and gimli devoted their whole lives to one another and legolas took gimli to essentially elf heaven with him. legolas and aragorn were amazing friends and i think they kissed. the three hunters are so qpr coded to me. they care so much for one another. i have not watched lotr in too long i should rewatch it again but Trust Me Bro theyre SO in love for realsies i got told to vote this by one of the mods. also aragorngimlilegolas resembles my qpr thank you tolkien for making these bitches sooo qpr roadtrip material
Gil Galad, Elrond, and Celebrian propagada: theyre soooo. the high king and his herald, facing unimaginable enemies that have killed all of their families. theyre both so trans also. they can only try to support each other even though the work keeps piling on and people keep dying and all they can do is try to live for each other. elrond has pledged his life to gilgalad and he will always be loyal. gilgalad would die for elrond but he has too many responsibilities and it breaks his heart that he cant say it back. when he does die it is for the world and for love and for elrond. to make a safe world for everyone. when they reunite in valinor they will have changed and learned so much but will still be there for each other, even though they are no longer king and herald.a king and a herald and their best friend. one has pledged their life to the people, the other to him, and the last is just trying to support them. in the midst of so much fear and destruction and uncertainty they stick together and support each other. gil galad dies before them and his loss will stay with them forever. celebrian has to sail to valinor and she must leave behind one for the other. but when elrond sails they will finally all be reunited. gil galad will never meet arwen but she grew up hearing stories about her second father, and strives to be as fair and just a ruler as he. elrohir and elladan are grown by the time they sail but they have until the end of days to make up for lost time. they get a happy ending, even through so much pain and strife. gil galad and celebrian know about elros and his decision to become mortal and how elrond knows it was the right choice for him but has a broken heart anyways. they knew but they didn't realize it would happen to them too. but they love each other and their children and they just want whats best for them. and they take solace in each other, they who still remain even through death. and they hope that when the dagor dagorath comes they can finally see all of their loved ones return from the great adventure of man and fight alongside each other, for even the destruction and renewal of arda cannot mar the happiness at being all together once more.

It is made clear that the ruler of the Woodland Realm was never in possession of a Ring of Power (even Cirdan of the Grey Havens held one, for a time). Yet of all the elven kingdoms of the third age, Mirkwood is the place which appears the most overtly magical.
Yup, it's headcannon time.
We know that Celebrimbor forged the rings during the second age and gave them to Gilgalad, Galadriel and in some drafts directly to Cirdan. It was only at Gilgalad's death that Vilya passed to Elrond.
From the attitude Oropher held towards the Noldor, it is to be expected that he would not be given a ring. And though Thranduil seemed less distrustful, I doubt any of the three felt close enough to him to wish to personally entrust their ring to him.
However, the Woodland Realm is a large elven kingdom that is remarkably close to Mordor. Leaving it unprotected would seem like great folly, especially when the Shadow rose and corrupted it from Greenwood into Mirkwood.
There must be something about Thranduil's rule which assured the rest of the Wise that he could hold his own, should the kingdom be under attack. And that is where magic comes in.
Tolkien's description of magic is very vague. Sure the Valar and Maia have powers, and so do magic rings embued with power. But other than that, most magical happenings go unexplained.
What is interesting is that overt magic in Rivendell (water horses and healing powers) and Lothlorien (stasis of the passage of time and preserving beauty) are explained through the presence of a ringbearer. But not the overt magic in Mirkwood, where the river is enchanted, bonfires can lead to hallucinations and doors are magical.
This leads me to think that Thranduil has powers, magical powers that are strong enough in and of itself to be a deterrent to enemies. It might not be as potent as a ring of power, but it is enough to protect his kingdom despite not being a ringbearer or being a light elf.
And I can't help but think that this has something to do with Thranduil growing up in Doriath under the guidance of Melian.
Oropher was noted to be a Sindarin Prince, and whether or not he was directly related to Thingol (a headcannon I'll leave for another post), he must surely be of high enough standing to occasionally get to meet the Maia Queen. It is during one of this meetings he decides to bring along his young son, and the blond elfling just charms Melian.
Perhaps the golden strands of his hair signified Vanyar blood, or reminded her of the golden tree. Whatever it is, Melian decides that this boy is talented, and she wants to tutor him.
Thingol too takes a liking to Thranduil, somehow seeing a lot of himself in the elfling. Oropher is delighted that his son has made an impression on his king and queen, and offers to bring him to the palace regularly.
And so it is, directly under the Maia Queen herself, that Thranduil learns his magic. He learns enchantments to repel and to protect, he learns the languages of the birds and is able to converse with them. He becomes more attuned to nature and the seasons, and finds himself as one with the forest.
Thingol occasionally drops in to their study sessions and speaks of Menegroth and trade with surrounding kingdoms and the day-to-day business of ruling. Thranduil is young enough to be just like a sponge and he absorbs all these knowledge, not really knowing what he will do with it but keeping it in his memory anyway.
And, after the fall of Doriath, the disappearance of Beleriand, the founding of the Woodland Realm and the death of his father, Thranduil recalls those lessons from long ago. He puts them into use and cannot help but think to himself, maybe Melian did see something in him after all.

A protective hug.—gilgalad
@eldatarin/ Have a Hug Nonverbal Starters
A HIGH AND FULL LUNGED SCREAM REACHES THE EVENING COURT. ❝NOOOOO. NOOOOOOOO!!!❞ the refusal let out at the top of voice came from one young, newly instated Prince. Along the marbled floors he was dragged to the forefront steps of the King’s throne by two very strong, very tall elves. Warriors dressed not in any colours of the Crown’s military, so they must be private guards from one of the Sindarin company from Harlindon. A royally dressed elf led them. ❝Your ward is a thief.❞ then he tossed an elegant looking dagger onto the floor, as if the point made by such an action. It was spiral hilted, silver made. And that was just about as special as it could get, for it held no gem or pearl at all.
Elrond did have a sense for thievery when it came to things that caught his eye. Namely, they were sweets form the kitchens, books, or shiny jewels. Weapons he really preferred to trade with his Dwarvish friends when he had one of his escapades to the Blue Mountains, with pearls harvested from the beautiful shores of Forlond.
❝I didn’t! I didn’t, I didn’t, I didn’t!❞ he insisted and thrashed about in the strength of hands upon his shoulders to keep him still. Then, he looked at Gil-galad.
Tumblr media
   ❝You know I didn’t.❞
Truthfully, Elrond would have been proud and undefeated if he did. He would never deny ownership of a spoil, neither be made to feel so low for acquiring it for awhile before getting caught.
The pompous elf had his guards let Elrond go, because no matter what only the High King had any rights to punish the wrongs of a prince. The heir at that.
Elrond immediately ran to Gil-galad’s back, grabbing a fistful of the King’s robes. He nigh fell from the force of his speed if not for Gil-galad’s hands coming to hold him and shield him from the false accusations.

Ummmm, It would probably depend on whether or not he challenged Gilgalad for the crown?
... I feel like I should point out that this is Noldorin succession and politics not Sindar, and that no orgies are not part of the succession rituals either.
forgemaiar
|| the rite of succession would have already been official by the time Turgon got there and not everyone would get news of his return at the same time, so it's either Gil stays on the throne or you waste valuable time on messy politics and divide your people's attention when there's kind of a wAR going on, so for sake of ease and safety Turgon would probably still count as ex-king ||
True, I feel like Turgon would just leave Gil-Galad as the High King rather than stir up trouble by announcing his survival at such a delicate point. I wouldn’t be surprised if he’d abdicate to Gil-Galad until such time as he decides he no longer wants the crown or he dies than takes the position up again.

Gil-Galad: You know Quenya?
Elrond: Yeah, Maedhros taught me.
Gil-Galad: A kinslayer taught you Quenya?!
Elrond: You don't know everything about me, Erenion. Now do you want help with the diplomats or not?
