Superman: The Man of Steel #31 (March 1994)
The plague hits Metropolis! The clone plague, that is. Not as in “man, there are a lot of clones in this comic all of a sudden” (there are, but I don’t mind), but as in “clones are dying for some mysterious reason.” The first tragic victim is a giant frog called Bubble-Up, one of the Underworlders who helped Lois Lane retrieve Superman’s corpse from Project Cadmus back in “Funeral for a Friend.” (As a reminder, “Underworlders” are failed cloning experiments created by Cadmus who ended up living in the sewers under Metropolis, so they’re mostly clones down there, along with some random homeless people and the occasional alien.)
Tumblr media
The Underworlders are convinced that Cadmus created this plague to kill them off and want to hit them back. Some, like Lois’ long-time homeless informant Charlie, think that attacking Cadmus would only give them an excuse to wipe out the Underworlders, but the others brush him off and are like “Wake up, sheeple!” (Literally, since at least one of them has the head of a ram.) So, Charlie and the less beligerent Underworlders come up with a brilliant plan to prevent a war: they kidnap Cadmus’ Director Westfield to persuade him to stop using “germ warfare” against the clones. Yeah, that’ll calm everyone down.
The nastiest Underworlders (Clawster and Rambeau from Death and Return of Superman video game fame) want a war with Cadmus at all costs, even if it means killing Charlie. Now that Superman’s back on Earth after his little space tour, Clawster and pals orchestrate several acts of sabotage around Metropolis to keep him occupied while the conflict rages on. Superman figures out what’s going on just a second too late to save Charlie from sacrificing his life to save Westfield.
Tumblr media
Superman stops the fight and vows to find out if the plague was made by Cadmus, but the Underworlders aren’t willing to wait for that because, well, they’ll die any moment now. Westfield doesn’t seem too convinced that the Underworlders are a peaceful bunch, either. There’s a big battle in the horizon -- a Battle for Metropolis™, you might say!
Character-Watch:
Rest in piece Bubble-Up, Teletype (the seal with psychic powers), and Charlie, whom I unfairly dubbed “Charlie the Ungrateful Hobo” in his first appearance (Man of Steel #17) because he seemed to repay Lois’ continued kindness by joining a violent Underworld revolution to overthrow the surface world. However, on the next issue we found out that Charlie only joined up to spy on the revolutionaries for Lois, so I apologized for my assumption. He’d remained a voice of reason among the Underworlders since then, so he’ll be missed.
Plotline-Watch:
So, are all the clones in Metropolis affected by the plague? Guardian seems to be fine, but we hear that the Newsboy Legion isn’t doing so well, and on the last page we see that Lex Luthor Jr. is losing his hair -- and reacts so badly that he fires his hairstylist, the same one who did his hair for Superman’s funeral (he won’t be needing one pretty soon, anyway). Don Sparrow says: “Getting a real Meshach Taylor as Hollywood Montrose vibe from Lex’s now-former hairstylist.”
Tumblr media
The first hint that Lex isn’t doing well was actually in last month’s Supergirl #1, when Dr. Kelley notices he looks off and he says he’s just “a bit tired.” It’s only once his beloved hair starts going that Lex takes his illness seriously, which seems pretty in character for him.
The first thing Superman does upon returning to Earth is help a couple whose car is snowed in by melting the ice with his heat vision. Don says: “Living in frigid Canada, I can appreciate the idea of Superman’s assist with melting the snow on page 8, but that car would be untouchably hot for a long time after, wouldn’t it?” Not to mention that Superman’s powers are currently out of whack, so they're lucky he didn't end up melting the entire car.
Tumblr media
Right after that, the owner of a flower shop throws Superman a bouquet of flowers as thanks for saving his brother’s hot dog stand from alien invaders at some point. This gives him some extra points with the fiancée once he stops by her place in a sappy (but deserved, because they’ve even away for a while) scene.
Tumblr media
The clone plague is so strong that it even changes your skin color! Charlie’s friend Grub has always been white but he’s black in this issue (that’s him on the first image on this post). Also, note that Charlie started dying his hair brown at some point.
Tumblr media
Patreon-Watch:
This post was made possible by the Superman ‘86 to ‘99 Patreon′s pals, Aaron, Murray Qualie, Chris “Ace” Hendrix, britneyspearsatemyshorts, Patrick D. Ryall, Bheki Latha, Mark Syp, Ryan Bush, Raphael Fischer, Kit, Sam, Hank Curry, and our new friend Bol, who got to read Don Sparrow’s section two weeks ago (because Don finished it before me; he’s the second fastest typist I’ve ever seen). Here it is for everyone else:
Art-Watch (by @donsparrow):
I have a few guesses as to why there are so many fill-ins within a short period.  The likely scenario is that the Super-team has fairly recently completed the huge "Return of Superman" storyline, and are taking a well-deserved break.  And the Superman/Doomsday: Hunter Prey mini-series is being created more or less at the same time as these issues, requiring a helping hand for an issue or two.  But my real theory is that these fill-ins are unofficial auditions for a more permanent spot  on the creative team.  We saw this back when Tom Grummett seemingly randomly did an issue or two of Action Comics, before he got the permanent gig.  In the coming weeks, we’ll see a “fill-in” from Stuart Immonen, who will eventually be the full-time guy.  So this issue, drawn by Green Lantern’s Mark Bright (sometimes credited as MD Bright) is an interesting look at what might have been.  Bright would have been a  natural fit for Man of Steel in particular, as Louise Simonson’s scripts have always focused on the black community of Metropolis to a degree not seen in the other titles.  To have a black artist working regularly on these stories would have been an interesting partnership.
Anyway, about the actual artwork—Bogdanove, the regular penciler does  do cover honours, and while the concept is very in keeping with Bog’s typical Shuster/Fleischer type posture, as Superman straining under the weight of something massive is a very golden age look, modernized with the laser battle behind him.  I will admit this one looks a tad rushed  for a cover, but it’s still good to keep Bog’s artwork streak alive for  another issue.
Inside, on the first page Bright gives the Underworlders a realism we don’t always see from Bogdanove’s looser, more pleasantly cartoony style.  It’s used to good effect as there’s nothing funny about the dying of the giant frog—in fact it’s quite poignant—despite the potential silliness of that sentence on its face.
Tumblr media
A page later we get a pretty great double page splash of Superman plowing through a meteor on his way back to Earth, and while I generally don’t love motion lines, this one does really convey some speed and power.
Tumblr media
I gotta say, I’ve never been a fan of the Underworlders, so their sequence doesn’t hold a ton of my interest, but I really love the way Bright draws the shine on Guardian’s helmet.  Back to above ground, I always like it when cold weather is shown in Metropolis, and that image of Superman flying through the snowfall is a great one.
Tumblr media
The rocky texture on Clawster’s face is well rendered on page 11, and I do love a good superfeats montage, like we see on page 12-13.  Not having been a fan of Clawster, ever, I did appreciate seeing him get uppercut by Superman, though it’s otherwise a pretty action-less ending for the story.
STRAY OBSERVATIONS
We don’t get a ton of hints about Superman’s growing power level in this issue, unless we’re supposed to read it that way when Superman zaps the Wolfman from Star Wars when trying to prevent the dynamite sabotage.
Tumblr media
Charlie’s  death was the big moment from this issue, but part of me couldn’t help but wonder if he was expendable because they realized how much he looks like Professor Hamilton. [Max: Hmm, dunno, he looks more like George Carlin to me in this issue. RIP, either way.]

I'm sad...I'm gutted...I'm shocked...I'm also smiling
I got some sad news tonight. Kind of ironic on Valentine’s Day, a day all about love, but in a way, I’m also feeling love. So…tonight, after wishing friends and family love for Valentine’s Day and even wishing a favorite couple happy anniversary, CGS, one of my oldest and closest friends, texted me, she hated to do it through text, but she just found out that someone we were friends with passed…

2nd March 1938 saw the arrest by MI5 of Jessie Jordan, the Dundee hairdresser who would later be convicted as a spy for Nazi Germany.
It is thought Jessie allied with the Nazis in order to get her daughter officially recognised as being of true Aryan descent — something that hadn’t happened previously because of Jessie’s illegitimate birth. She had been married to a German and lived there for several years until they divorced in 1937 when she returned home.
She was a low-level agent, and in addition to handling mail from America, she compiled a map of coastal defences between Montrose and North Berwick, which she had planned to pass on to Germany.
However, one of her colleagues, who had grown suspicious of Jessie, discovered the map — and when Dundee police began investigating, they realised MI5 were already on her trail.
A letter forwarded to Hamburg by Jessie was marked with her address, which allowed the investigation to convict her and track down other Nazi agents in America.
A New York spy ring was rumbled by the FBI off the back of her mistakes — marking the first time the US and the UK had worked together on intelligence at a time when the two nations still actively spied on each other.
She was paid with £5 notes which at the time were still uncommon — it would be like one of our £100 notes today. The serial numbers on them allowed you to trace it through the system and so they were able to find the bank in the Netherlands where they had been withdrawn by the Germans.
She wasn’t much of a spy. She left a trail of evidence, but she only had around a week of training. She was very quickly found out in art by one of the women who worked in the hairdressers, Mary Curran.
The entire tale, encompassing Jessie’s arrest right up to the conviction of the New York spies, was dramatized in 1939 for the Warner Brothers’ film Confessions of a Nazi Spy. It was the first Hollywood film to strongly criticise Hitler’s regime and sparked a change in the way Americans perceived Germany prior to the Second World War.
She was found guilty of espionage and in May 1939 was sentenced to four years’ imprisonment. She was initially sent to Saughton Prison, during which time she became unwell and underwent an invasive operation that included a sub-total hysterectomy. When the Second World War started, she was transferred to Aberdeen Prison.
During her time in prison, Jordan was described by her Dundee solicitor J. R. Bond as “a model prisoner, who showed off her needlework and exhibited no interest in an appeal.” Bond further noted that “she is not in the least depressed.” As a result of this good behaviour, Jordan was granted early release in 1941, but was immediately arrested and interned as an enemy alien. She remained in this internment throughout the war, and after the war ended she was deported to Germany. Jordan died in Hamburg in 1954.

A doodle of Angel I've wanted to do forever. Inspired by Hollywood Montrose and this scene of Mannequin:

Thinking about it now...this could be a cute-ass AU with Angel as Hollywood and Chaggie as the main couple. Charlie was originally supposed to be a doll, y'know.

What would Terry’s reaction be to finding Beloved with another man?…
Tumblr media
---
Of course his first instinct was to kill. Maim.
Avenge. Mainly himself.
Settle scores.
Achieve prime control by digging his fingers into your neck until your ligaments snapped in half and then deal with the lowlife punk schmuck you were shacked up with at The Montrose, downtown West Hollywood. Destroy their mediocre little life, one bit at a time until they begged for release he wouldn't give them. Margaret, by extension of his private investigators told him exactly where to find you. The location to where you were tracked. Followed, when you thought you were being clever, unseen, outsmarting everyone, never realizing his many eyes were always on you.
He takes the Rolls Royce there.
Has his chauffeur driving him out. The aesthetic choice was deliberate. He'd go down there calmly, in high style, a man of the world, well dressed, poised, like he was doing no more and no less than attending some high stakes business meeting. A conference. And he was, in a sense. Revenge was business and his business was revenge, today of all days, as he calmly strides of the stairs on the third floor, polished leather shoes against the floorboards, adjusting his golden cufflinks, the puzzled front desk receptionist at the dingy hotel eyeing him like he just saw the fucking Pope enter the venue premises. Yeah, it is simple as knocking on the door marked AB19 and you open, thinking he's room service undoubtedly, find yourself in a state of partial undress, wrapped in a bathrobe, looking pale. Terry was convinced it was a far greater fright to come face to face with him than being caught cheating. But he's cool, simply grabbing the door's frame from the top, using his height to his advantage once you try to close it shut in front of him and he strides past you with ease, looking for a chair to sit down on, inviting himself inside, never asking for permission, pulling a monogrammed silken handkerchief under himself as he does, sprawling it out, as not to get sullied, the keys to your room promptly tossed on a nearby end table with a metallic, resounding clamor that shook the foyer.
There's a creature on the bed, just like Terry knew there would be, rolled in post-coital bedsheets, looking even more befuddled than you were; an emotion clearly replaced by fear once the door shuts behind his stride and two realize you were just caught. What? Did he interrupt something? Terry crosses his legs, nonchalant. He would deal with this punk later. It would be a pleasure.
-"C'mon! Don't stop on my account."- He fishes a golden cigar box out of his inside pocket, ensuring that the suit he wore was the picture of flattery on him, looking for a cutter and a lighter, pushing the tobacco between his lips, nonplussed. He already broke half of the furniture back at the mansion earlier today when his detective handed him the photographs of you with this...thing, staring at him from the mattress, shaken. He got ahold of himself by the time he arrived here, hot waves of wrath rolling off of him until there was nothing left but stony determination. Now was the time to play his frosty disposition and play it masterfully. -"I wanna watch."- Terry utters that line like it was nothing at all, and it wasn't anything at all. He's watched people fuck before. People watched him fuck before too. He's just never watched someone that was his fuck someone else before, was all. That's why all his discipline is employed, never to show an emotion. Never show mercy. Not now.
-"Terry, I, how..."- You stutter uncomfortably, finally able to muster a word or two, still processing he was here at all. Least of all, that he was asking what he was asking.
-"I said, I wanna watch."-
He repeats, matter-of-factly, feeling himself grow icy cold at the idea his explicit order was being questioned at all, letting the smoke bellow out of his nostrils in floating circles, pointing a ring finger vaguely at the nobody fucktard you choose to do him in with. How your standards have fallen. You wanted to learn a thing or two about humiliation? Fair enough. Terry Silver was here to do the teaching. This would be one of many demonstrated lessons. The first one. The prologue. Round one in the ringer.
-"So? Put on a good live performance."-
He twirls his hand in the air for emphasis, relishing in your embarrassment, so thick he could practically cut it with a knife and eat it for breakfast with an entrée followed by the main course in the form of your bleeding heart, feeling his jaw tighten to the point he could imagine himself capable of biting through the concrete walls of the room filled with cold anger, eyes searching for an ashtray and in finding none, he simply allows the searing residue from his cigar to fall on the carpet along with a curtain of red embers. He could burn this whole place down and he'd be fully justified in doing so. But, no, Terry didn't deal in impulsive anger. Terry only got angry when he decided it was time to --- deciding when it was useful --- and now wasn't the time. He ironically needed to be perfectly level headed now. And so, he was.
-"Terry, listen, we can go outside and I can explain ---"-
You try desperately to placate him and your creature scurries nervously, collecting their shit from strewn over the floor, ready to run. Make a dash for it. -"I'll leave, man."- They make a pathetic attempt and fail. -"Bullshit you will. Class isn't dismissed and recess hasn't started."- Terry doesn't raise his voice, refusing to blink. Doesn't give anyone in the room the satisfaction of finding him affected and out of control. Instead, he adjusts himself and sinks deeper into the trusted old cuck chair --- of course every hotel had one, but this time, he tended to see it as the seat of command, pointing at the bed, refusing to address the creature personally, instead, doing it through you as mouthpiece, courier and vessel. -"You tell them, they'll be a good robot. Do exactly as programmed."- Terry instructs, never taking his eyes off of you. Sure, yes, he considered violence as his first incentive, but this? This was so much better. You wanted to be an adulterer and now it was your chance do to what an adulterer did best, with him as witness and coordinator, learning a lesson you'd never forget; that regardless what you did, you belonged to him. Now and always. -"And after you're done,"- He warns, wagging his finger. -"You'll pack all your crap up and you're coming home with me."- Disbelief. Terry reads disbelief in your eyes when faced with those words. Like a part of you thought that fucking someone else would finally liberate you from him as your last way out. That you'd get rid of him. That he'd be disgusted, angry and done with you to the degree you'd walk free, even if walking free came with certain amounts of pain stemming from his ire, truly showing how desperately you wanted freedom at any cost. If that was your reason behind tactically doing this then you were dead wrong --- you grossly miscalculated --- because giving you exactly what you wanted was too damn easy.
No.
You'd stay right where you belonged --- with him.
Denied of the very thing you were reaching for forever.
And Terry would enjoy that so much. That would be his revenge.
-"Chop-chop! Get to work."- Terry claps his hands, balancing his cigar between his index and middle finger, mustering a dry chuckle, feeling himself like spectator at the Kentucky Derby bidding on a race horse from the jam-packed audience, watching you exchange silently horrified glances with the schmuck on the bed who was still trying to figure out if this was real or an elaborate joke. Was no joke. Didn't you tell them about him? No? Terry wanted to watch you fuck the prick. He wanted it to last long. Torturously so. Terry wanted you to feel his gaze on you as you did, unable to escape. Feel every bit of discomfort, unease, objectification and suffering you could until you finally tapped the fuck out and found that this was only the beginning. That there was his car waiting downstairs and that you'd be going back with him. That you would pay for what you've done. That you'd realize what 'nothing is for free' really meant. That he would ensure your paid your dues for this betrayal with every inch of your being until it left a mark on your very soul. When you refuse to move, Terry decides, now's the time to raise his voice and his tone is laced with crude laughter as he does once both you and the shmuck nearly jump out of your skins. -"With conviction!"- Terry yells, as you reluctantly approach the bed, finally moving, even if it was at a snail's pace, wholly shaken and shivering. He smiles. Good. Perfect. This would hurt you, sure. But, no more than it would hurt him.
He takes another long, hard drag out of his cigar, filling the room with smoke.

BULLWORTH ACADEMY PLAYLIST
So, recently I’ve been spending some of my freetime creating playlists for each clique at Bullworth (minus the Townies since they aren’t enrolled students during the events of the story), and figured I may as well make a post with what songs I associate with each character… Because why not!! >:) Each song association/suggestion will have a link to their respective Spotify in case you’re interested in checking them out!
Click on each title to find the entire playlist I’ve created on Spotify, or the individual song titles to listen to that specific track!
The title of this blog also leads to a larger playlist of all the songs complied into one playlist for those who want it :D

Here is an unfinished sketch of a Bully/Canis Canem Edit OC of mine. I'm not planning on completing this particular image, but I still wanted to post something because I said a while back that I'd share something about my OCs but I never did, so here is Brandi Torres!
Tumblr media
My first fanfic that I posted on ao3 (you can find the link on my blog) actually includes her and another one of my OCs. I thought it was a fun way to introduce them while also writing a self-indulgent rarepair story, lol.
Some basic info. It might change in the future:
Full Name: Brandi Isabela Torres Romão Birth date: August 17th Age: 15 Height: 165 cm School: Bullworth Academy Year: 10th Clique: Preppies Hair color: Black Eyes: Light brown
Below is her bio that I created a few months ago, back when I said I would post a work about my OCs on ao3. I didn't really know how to write their biographies in a way that would be interesting to read and I wanted to push myself to post my art online, so I scrapped that idea. Again, this info may change:
Brandi was born in New York and was the last child of four. Growing up in the hustle and bustle of NYC, Brandi was exposed to the glamorous world of showbiz. Her father, a movie producer and director, and her mother, an acclaimed opera singer, provided Brandi with a comfortable upbringing. Growing up, Brandi would spend her summer holidays at her family's vacation home in the Hamptons, where she first met Bryce Montrose and was immediately smitten with him. As the years passed, Brandi's feelings for Bryce grew to the point of possessiveness, although Bryce remains unaware of this and continues to regard Brandi like a little sister. Brandi is equally blind to Bryce's non-romantic feelings for her, believing that one day they will become a couple. When she was eleven years old, Brandi's family moved to New England and enrolled her into Bullworth Academy at the suggestion of the Montroses. She instantly became fast friends with Pinky and Gord and developed close relationships with Bif and Fiona (OC) [I plan on posting her soon, I just need to clean up her sketch]. It was during her time at Bullworth that Brandi began to compete for Bryce's attention, although it was often given to Chad instead. Through it all, Brandi remains one of Bryce's closest companions. Brandi is a well-known figure around school due to her parents' influence in the entertainment industry. She's taken her love of the spotlight and channeled it into her involvement with the Drama Club. She offers a certain level of flair to school productions, but her overconfidence in her singing talent often falls short of expectations. She loves to show off her wealth and flaunt her parents' fame at every opportunity. Brandi takes great pleasure in throwing lavish parties and often invites less wealthy students as guests. Brandi is social and amiable on the surface but can easily display a nastier side to those whom she sees as obstacles. She is good at persuasion and manipulation and will do whatever it takes to get what or who she wants.
See? It's boring! Anyway, onto trivia i.e. info I'm too lazy to try and fit into her bio:
She and her father are the only ones in her family born in the US. Her mother and siblings were born in Portugal
Speaks with a Trans-Atlantic accent [Oh, to be a starlet in old Hollywood!]
Knows Bryce is broke and covers for him
Derby usually entrusts her to plan parties at Harrington House
She and Gary bump heads a lot as he doesn't care for her flattery at all. She also got him kicked off the debate team
Favorite color is white
Good at Geometry
Brandi is actually a composite of herself and another one of my OCs; Isabella was an OC I've had for a while who shared a lot of similarities with Brandi so I combined them together. Brandi's second personal name is an homage to Isabella
Thanks for sticking around this long to check her out. This is literally the first time I have posted my art on the internet, and honestly? I'm terrified, lmao. I always hated my art and rn I'm experimenting with a new art style so I'm unsure about everything. Hopefully future me doesn't decide to delete this post.

Book Blurb:
She’s written off more than she can chew…
Romance author Sophie Lyon’s ironic secret just went viral: she’s never been in love. Though her debut novel made readers swoon, Sophie’s having trouble getting her new characters to happily-ever-after, and she blames it on her own uninspired love life. With a manuscript deadline looming, Sophie makes an ambitious plan to overcome her writer’s block: reunite with her exes to learn why she's never fallen in love—and document it all for her millions of new online followers. Which also means facing her ex-girlfriend Carla, the one person Sophie could have loved.
Luckily, Sophie’s reclusive landlord, Dash Montrose—a former teen heartthrob—has social media all figured out and offers to help. But he doesn't mention that he’s an anonymous online crafter, a hobby that helps him maintain his sobriety. No one knows about his complicated relationship with alcohol and he intends to keep it that way. His family is Hollywood royalty, so Dash has to steer clear of scandal.
As Sophie and Dash grow closer, they discover a heat between them that rivals Dash's pottery kiln. But Sophie needs to figure out who she is outside her relationships, and Dash isn’t sure he’s stable enough for the commitment she deserves. So Sophie suggests what any good romance author would: a friends-with-benefits arrangement. Surely a casual relationship won’t cause any trouble…
Review:
She's an author with writer's block and has a second book deadling due in a couple weeks and he's an actor who's given up acting to make craft tiktok videos while he's maintaining his sobriety... he's also her landlord and her best friend's brother but when one checkup leads to more, both of them are beginning to realize that they might be the perfect person for the other. Sophie is a romance author but she's only written one book, and now she's stuck in a rut, she has a second book due but she can't seem to write it. When a drunken night out leads to her going viral over a video in which she says she's never been in love she decides to overcome her writer's block and reunite with her exes to learn why she's never fallen in love...all the while documenting it to her millions of new online followers. Dash Montrose is a former teen hearthrub turned anonymous online crafter, a hobby that has helped him maintain his sobriety. No one knows his secret and he plans on keeping it that way, but that might be hard when his family is Hollywood Royalty and they want him to come back into the spotlight. When his sister ask him to check on her best friend and his tenant, Sophie, he does, and what was only suppose to be a check in turns into more as he begins opening up to her and they find themselves becoming friends... and possibly something more.... This was an okay book overall for me, I did appreciate the emphasis that Dash had on his sobriety and trying to maintain it and I liked how supportive and understanding Sophie was. The romance was nice and the resolution to the struggle of why they couldn't be together was alright. Overall it was oaky, it just didn't grab me as much as I thought it would and I just felt alright overall. It's not bad but it just wasn't that great to me. I felt that it was a cute story and the romance was nice and would definitely recommend it for anyone looking for a romance read with friends-with-benefits in it.
*Thanks Netgalley and Harlequin Trade Publishing, Canary Street Press for sending me an arc in exchange for an honest review*

any director's cut commentary on the most recent chapter?
💕 absolutely delighted to, anon! (and who are you that you remember these!)
i don’t know if there’s any specific part you’re interested in, but i'll scroll through the chapter and comment on anything that pops out to me. if there IS something specific, please ask!
“Act versus status,” she says now, returning to an earlier river, further inland up the delta. “Status is not a criminal act.” The delta splits into two here, and she follows one of the streams. “For example…” she whispers. “For example… being an addict is a status, not an act.”
this was so fun! this is a scene from my pre-canon fic “a controlled burn”, but from kim’s perspective.
kim was specific enough on her end of the phone call that i knew i’d picked some piece of real crim law for her to be referencing, so two years later for this scene i had to find it again. and then it turned out to be much more relevant than i realised at the time!
also i do want this to work even if it’s the first fic of mine you read! thankfully (evilly) the show decided to make born yesterday the most traumatic old hollywood film choice of all time, so. there you go.
Sluggish with foreign material and long days and copy machines and coffee breaks and new things.
a little reference to this one shot of mine, “green”! she likes new things.
something v. Texas, or Pressburger v. something
it’s powell v texas, but kim’s brain gives her pressburger here because she’s a fan of powell and pressburger movies.
“I saw the news,” Kim blurts out, her chest rising and falling between the words. She tries for warm and sympathetic instead: “And I thought of you, how are you?”
i love everyone’s kindly-innocent-phone-voices on this show, and it’s fun trying to capture them in text.
also ever since i first saw the episode i’ve been obsessed with the idea of kim calling francesca and making it as far as she can through a conversation, as if she isn’t desperate to ask about jimmy from the moment the call connects.
“Robles and Goto Partners,” the receptionist says musically. “How can I help you today?”
big ups to gina robles from the 410 cold open who is suddenly given a role in my fanfiction, hi gina.
also of course our beloved viola, who witnessed much too much, and who i’m so delighted by. slinging shade about vegan patties. “i, um. good.” an icon. she’s seen saul goodman in his pajamas. who else could it be.
Lynn has family up in Santa Fe, so when she found us a place here… it just seemed meant to be.
even bigger ups to Lynn of deleted scene fame who absolutely made the most of a free trip to the stein eriksen lodge in 2004.
This is a prepaid call from—and then Jimmy’s own voice clicks in, a hollow recording: “Uh, Jimmy McGill?” before it shifts back to the robot—… an inmate at Montrose Federal Correctional Complex.
SHOUTOUT TO SERIAL, WHO HERE LISTENED TO THAT TEN YEARS AGO
“Y’know, it’s a funny thing,” Jimmy says, crackling and hissing at the edges, so far away. “I can’t stop thinking about what the weather’s like out there.”
oh honey
kim he’s thinking now
kim get your man out he’s dreaming again he’s wistful
“No, I meant—” Jimmy starts, and the tone is suddenly so familiar she can see him clearly, can see him shaking his head and staring at her pleadingly. “What about you as the better lawyer?”
jimmy saving up his precious minutes of shitty payphone connection to sow some seeds 🥺
this next scene with patty is a really interesting one in terms of like... one of the difficulties i’ve found writing kim pov is handling the dialogue in the scenes where kim is largely silent. it’s such an important part of the character but it really strains my limited range of action description.
and i didn’t even realise specifically how little she did speak here, but she says less than ten words over this entire interaction.
it’s tough because i still want it to feel like two people engaging with each other, like patty’s bouncing off kim and not just giving a ted talk.
She’d forgotten the bar exam, in the months afterwards. By the time she received her score, she had barely remembered what questions she’d answered, what subjects she’d written on.
it’s weird and wonderful how like... way back when i was working on the bar exam chapters for "slip and fall season”, i read a bunch of things people had written about their experiences. and i remember people saying afterwards they totally forgot everything they wrote. i dont know if this ever ended up in safs, but it’s so cool how like... that was just sitting in my head, waiting to be useful.
like churning water heading for the shore.
all the best chapter endings are accidentally in iambic pentameter.

JINJER's TATIANA SHMAYLUK Joined By VIO-LENCE, BAD WOLVES Members For Cover Of LAMB OF GOD's 'Laid To Rest'
Vocalist Tatiana Shmailyuk of Ukrainian modern metal frontrunners JINJER was joined by guitarists Phil Demmel (VIO-LENCE) and Doc Coyle (BAD WOLVES, GOD FORBID),bassist Ricky Bonazza (BUTCHER BABIES) and drummer Alex Lopez (ex-SUICIDE SILENCE) for a performance of LAMB OF GOD's "Laid To Rest" at this past Tuesday night's (March 28) "Ultimate Jam Night" at the Whisky A Go Go in West Hollywood, California. Watch video of the performance below (courtesy of Jessica Chase).
This week's "Ultimate Jam Night" benefited Animal Tracks, a Southern California sanctuary for endangered animals.
Established in 2002, and currently located in Agua Dulce, Animal Tracks is a non-profit immersive sanctuary for more than 80 rescued animals. These animals are unsuited for being household pets, nor readily placeable in zoos. As a result, they find themselves with limited life options. The benefit raised funds for immediate and continuous care of the animals and allow the organization to find new facilities in the face of ongoing zoning issues.
Hosted by comedian, musician and VH1 host Hal Sparks, the benefit featured appearances by other high-profile rock musicians, including METALLICA bassist Robert Trujillo, as well as members of OK GO, BAD WOLVES, P.O.D., MINISTRY, WHITESNAKE, VIO-LENCE, DIRTY HONEY, PALAYE ROYALE, JOYOUS WOLF, ARMORED SAINT and KING'S X.
"Animal Tracks is a unique southern Californian treasure", said Chuck Wright (QUIET RIOT, ALICE COOPER, MONTROSE),who founded "Ultimate Jam Night" in 2015. "Staffed by dedicated volunteers under the direction of a trained exotic animal experts, Animal Tracks takes hard to place endangered animals and gives them a last-chance home and care. Otherwise, these beautiful creatures would be destroyed."
Created in 2015, "Ultimate Jam Night" presents an ever-evolving show of music, performance art, and more designed to keep live music alive. Over the course of its history, "Ultimate Jam Night" has hosted music's biggest names, held community and charity events, presented Broadway-like performances and entertained hundreds of thousands. The show is completely unrehearsed.
