OC lineup. Whee. Individual refs under cut. Might revamp some of their profiles on toyhouse soon. These were mostly because I kind of wanted to dress my guys up, lol. Still haven’t, though.

okay so @sorry-i-panicked accidentally reminded me wing aus exist so this one is inspired by them💪
anyways u know i have to make a ronance wing au like they’re practically made for it
switching things up by going with robin first! now: i know what you’re thinking. and NO. im not making her wings robin wings. i’m going with one of the smartest birds in the world- the kea parrot! :) they’re very curious and aren’t afraid of pissing people off lol. they’re also known for solving puzzles! their wings are so pretty and they’re known for their problem solving and though they can’t talk, they communicate effectively :)
Tumblr media
LISTEN IK WHAT UR GONNA SAY
yeah yeah gay wings BUT im thinking robin has a pretty impressive wingspan! wider than usual and definitely long. she’s still clumsy in the air, but i like to think that sometimes, when she’s really in the groove, she looks pretty graceful. absolutely the type to wrap nancy up in her wings <3
they also move forward by hopping sideways?😭 insert robin having weird coordination joke here
okay onto nancy! a lot of this is biased by the fact that i want nancy to have pink in her wings so bad😩 so im going with the intelligent galah cockatoo! very intelligent and has a knack for picking up on speech and vocab, like a good journalist. while i don’t usually describe nancy as friendly she definitely CAN be and this is an au where people have wings so im not 1:1 comparison ok </3
also female galah’s have pink eyes u better BET ur ass im applying that to miss wheeler
Tumblr media
look at this its so pretty😩
im thinking nancy’s wings are a bit big for her but nothing crazy! i like to think nancy is a talented flier bc she did it so much as a kid, really one of the only ways she felt free. galah’s are fast and known for acrobatics. she takes good care of her wings, making sure her feathers are neat and cared for
im thinking robin actually neglects to care for her own wings pretty often with her feathers always uncomfortably disorganized and messy, which gets her pretty frustrated with her wings. based on rebel robin her parents aren’t abusive they’re just really weird in a not so great way, so i can see her not really knowing how? nancy gets one look at them and is like “if you don’t sit down so i can FIX THESE”
nancy makes it a habit well into their friendship and eventual relationship, teaching robin how to herself but doing it often anyways because it’s relaxing and a bonding moment okay
the first time nancy see’s robin’s wings she’s awestruck bc they’re so pretty, especially when robin takes care of them, she always compliments them
robin also loves nancy’s wings, they’re so her and they’re very soft, especially near the inside by where they attach to her back, which nancy is super hesitant to let robin touch at first but eventually she’s welcome to, because she trusts her and especially because it feels good
firm believer in bird traits affecting them. nancy, following galah traits of nesting in tree hollows, always feels safe completely surrounded, always being fond of those kid princess tents because they surrounded her on all sides and were comfy! she also loves the smell of eucalyptus.
robin feels most comfortable in a nest of pillows and blankets on the floor, usually up against a wall, as following kea nesting habits of setting up nests in between tree roots!
the two of them team up and build the best blanket forts on the floor and they cuddle! it’s something special for the two of them and they try to do it often.
they both love fruit sm😩 for breakfast they eat fruit all the time. nancy cuts the fruit as the one of the two of them that is allowed to handle a knife (learned the hard way w an er trip) and robin arranges them into fun displays that make nancy laugh and kiss her on the cheek. nancy can’t handle meat well/just doesn’t like it as galahs are strictly herbivores so they like to try a ton of new stuff with vegetarian spins
feathers are often exchanged between the two, nancy wears a cluster of robin’s feathers on a necklace (made by robin) and robin keeps nancy’s softest feathers as a sensory thing, they’re really easy to run her her fingers over and keep her grounded, you can usually see pink feathers in her hand or in her pocket.
im thinking their first kiss happens mid air bc they’re going on a flying date that’s definitely not a date but is a date and robin sees nancy do this little spin and just laugh and robin just dives for her, cups her face and kisses her. nancy is only a little surprised before she eagerly returns it, going to wrap her arms around robin’s shoulders before quickly going to her waist to keep robin from falling and she has to remind robin through breathless giggles to “keep flapping birdie i can’t hold both of us” and robin quickly adjusts so that they can continue and
AGH
i love them so bad

How to get rid of possums from your ceiling
The fun of living on a farm, surrounded by bushland. Birds singing, kangaroo’s hopping through the paddock…. …galah’s & cockatoo’s stealing all the ducks tucker, wombats digging holes under the fences and letting foxes through to get your chooks, monitors stealing eggs and eviscerating your waterfowl, feral goats breaking down fences to get at your nanny’s.  Oh it’s…

dr ferox, in an ideal world how would you personally regulate native species being kept as pets in australia & what are your thoughts on the concept as a whole? especially irt domesticated vs non-domesticated species and the unique considerations n risks posed for differing animals. additionally, if pet owners shifted away from invasive species like cats or rats on a large scale instead keeping hopping mice or galahs (both currently allowed to be kept as pets without a license in victoria) [1/2]
are the negatives that are true for keeping any non-domesticated animal for a pet too severe for there to be any potential benefit? and are there any species that jump out to you as being totally appropriate or inappropriate for domestic relationships/pet ownership? [2/2] also im pretty sure your coffee FAQ answer is in jest, but if you’re still based in melbourne then i can always leave a tab at your favourite cafe as a thank you lmao. i know this is a complex topic that has no simple answer!
Ferox here.
There are a lot of negatives in keeping non-domesticated native Australian wildlife and I’m not in a rush to encourage it.
Domesticated species are adapted to living with us. They more or less get along with us most of the time. Wild species are not, we have to adapt to them if we’re going to keep them in our homes and a lot of people are simply not going to do that.
A large part of the issue with invasive species like cats in particular is that people allow them to free roam, don’t go looking when they’re missing and encourage their breeding beyond capacity. If people did that with native species, you’d still have a population boom of that one particular species and that’s still not great for the local ecology. Just look at the poor ecologists screaming n frustration for people to stop feeding the local possums.
If you’re keeping a non-domesticated animal as a pet, what you’re really doing is maintaining a miniature zoo. Some people are willing to do that to a much higher standard than others with appropriate diets and enrichment, and some people are just not willing to do that.
Much of our wildlife is not super amenable to being good pets. We have some very poisonous snakes, which are super inappropriate pets. Kangaroos get downright aggressive if familiar with people, especially the males. The smaller ones get stressed with handling. Wombats are cute but get a lot bigger than you expect them to. Many of our mammals are nocturnal while we are not. Parrots are a whole complicated issue on their own but budgies and cockateils have been domesticated and do well in a parrot-friendly home. We also have some very cool bugs that are not too difficult to keep, but most of these things you wouldn’t take for a walk and interact with on the same level as dogs and cats.
I’m not going to be able to get to a cafe for a while with Melbourne’s COVID restrictions, but I didn’t really have a favorite I frequented. Although, if you’re willing to drop a couple of dollars on something on my behalf, the Wonderground is struggling to pay its bills. They are forced to close under lockdown restrictions, will be the last type of venue to reopen when the state does, and because they had been running less than a year did not qualify for any financial support or handouts from the government.
vet-and-wild here.
I just thought I’d jump in on the second bit since I see a lot of exotics. The obvious answers are big cats, primates, venomous species, and other large/dangerous carnivores but the intricacies are much more complicated. I see rabbit owners (the third most common pet in the US) who are providing completely inappropriate husbandry, to the point that their animal is on death’s door. I also see skunk and fox owners who are very knowledgeable and responsible about the care of their animals. There’s such a spectrum of knowledge and ability amongst exotic pet owners, so it’s really hard to draw a line in the sand. I see husbandry issues almost daily in exotics (particularly reptiles) that would be considered straight up abuse/neglect in a cat or dog. But I also see large parrots almost as old as their owners who have immaculate diets and a full house to explore. Unfortunately the owners with the perfect husbandry don’t always come in for wellness exams, so it’s the sick, pet store bought animals that I see a lot of. Mainly, any animal that is a huge risk to public safety for public health, venom, or size/strength reasons I don’t like to see in in the pet trade. I really really hate seeing pet raccoons because of all the disease transmission risks to humans and domestic pets. Same with primates. But yeah, some of the more obvious ones like big cats certainly apply.

6, 12, 15, 30, 35 and 41 for dnd ask!! All characters, but especially Compassion because I need to know these things about her....... for dm reasons..... absolutely my excuse..... <3
Whoops got a bit distracted researching historical clothing for Compassion funnily enough and didn’t notice the ask.
6. Do they sleep in a certain pose?
Compassion my tiefling celestial warlock: Tends to curl up when sleeping, if they’re super anxious they’ll forgo a bed entirely and find some cramped corner to cram themselves into.
Ielenia, half elf wizard: She used to be a side sleeper, unfortunately since she lost her arm she now sleeps on her back
Rose, Owlfolk bard/rogue: Will sleep anywhere anyhow. Can sleep standing up and has been known to micronap while flying.
12. What colour would they paint their room? Would there be a design on the ceiling?
Compassion: green or blue, I don’t think they’d paint anything in particular on the ceiling but they might paint (or get someone to paint) a mural on the wall.
Ielenia: warm earth tones with the night sky on the ceiling
Rose: doesn’t quiet get the concept, having grown up in a nest then spending her time hopping from floating island chunk to ice palace to airship. Would probs just say white is asked.
15. What sound can’t they stand? this one’s a tough one never really considered it before.
Compassion: Someone yelling at them in celestial (double bad if its a particular regional accent). I’ve got an idea that celestial is considered a ‘high court’ language in the area she grew up in. As in, it was the language of nobility and it was the language her parents would yell at her in.
Rose: absolutely hates out of tune instruments. If it goes on for long enough Will go over there and either fix it or get them to shut the fuck up.
30. Have they ever tried to count their own freckles? Do they count other people’s?
Compassion: has absolutely tried to count how many freckles they have. They spring up like mushrooms after rain if she spends time in the sun. She’s never really counted other peoples freckles before, but other people have certainly made a go at counting hers.
Ielenia: nope. Has enjoyed counting partner’s freckles tho.
Rose: Doesn’t have freckles on account of having feathers.
35. Do hey sing with their head voice or their chest voice? Had to google what this was
Compassion: head, Ielenia: head, Rose: chest
41. What’s the silliest thing they’ve used magic to do?
Compassion: They are the secret accomplice to many of Peanut Butter’s (a pink galah familiar) pranks. So there’s a lot to choose from. But of what they’ve done in campaign, using minor illusion to change Chance’s tarot card to a sexy pinup of themself.
Ielenia: I think the time they used counterspell on one of her own party member’s to stop them from using a cantrip to graffiti something into the ground.

a more aussie christmas poem
‘twas the arvo before Christmas, when all through the yard,
I started writing a dumb parody and trying too hard.
‘twas the afternoon before Christmas, and all through the porch,
Creatures hid in the shade to avoid the sun’s scorch.
Stockings gently rested against the stairs,
Crammed full of bullshit with little room to spare.
The kids would be going for a fair while yet,
Since it’s like 4 hours before the sun will set.
I walked in the door and collapsed in my bed,
As bad post ideas were clouding my head.
When out on the verge there arose such a clatter,
I rolled over lamely to see what’s the matter.
Limp arms stretching out to adjust the blinds,
Grumbling about how the buggers are designed.
The sun baking down on the stretches of concrete,
Ripples of hot air coming off of the street.
When, what to my wondering ears should be heard,
But the scrabblings and squawkings of a tiny bird.
From his colours I could tell he was a willy wagtail,
From his territorial mood I was sure he was male.
Around him a gaggle of intruders were flitting,
Despite the beak I could hear what he was spitting.
“OI CROWS, OI SHRIKES, OI GALAHS AND DUCKS!
OI BURRAS AND SEAGULLS, ALL OF YOU FUCKS!
GET THE HELL OFF MY PORCH! GET THE HELL OFF MY WALL!
FUCK RIGHT OFF! FUCK OFF! FUCK YOU ALL!”
The words inherent to his aggressive tweeting,
Left an impression that was at best fleeting,
And as up to the house the other birds flew.
There wasn’t really much the wagtail could do.
And as I continued to imagine the avian lingo,
I looked up and saw a beak at my window.
I reached over to the curtain, to cut the ibis off,
But the bastard had already torn through the cloth.
It was dressed all in white, save its head and its foot,
Each of them skin the colour of soot.
It looked at me quizzically down that long beak,
For a moment it seemed neither of us would speak.
Its eyes were far from what I would call merry,
As it scanned my bedroom for objects dietary,
It hopped around, on the prowl through my stuff
As I stumbled upwards to clean up its fluff.
I noticed a shift, its attention now rapt,
Fixed on a gift box I’d left half unwrapped.
It started to approach the chocolate delights,
And I knew it wouldn’t leave without a fight.
As I put myself between the bird and its craving,
I remembered the wagtail outside a-raving.
Had only the ibis heeded its warning,
It might not be so sore getting up the next morning.
With not a word to spare, I flashed it a smirk,
And somehow through the flapping scooped up the jerk.
Hurling it back out the gap whence it came,
I thought I probably looked pretty lame.
Bedraggled and bed haired, I’d be a sorry sight,
As I finally laid down to sleep an early night.
Closing my eyes, I imagined that wagtail tell,
“GREAT WORK CUNT, SLEEP WELL.”
I’m going to be honest, that was a lot more work than I thought it would be. It was probably also substantially lamer.
But it was a dumb idea I had, and if this blog has taught me anything (a turn of phrase I’ve probably used for like a dozen different things now), it’s that I am more than willing to commit to dumb ideas.

August 17 “Love in the time of Cholera”
or more appropriately Travel in the time of Covid! with apologies to Gabriel Garcia Márquez. This post is completely unrelated to the plot of that intriguing novel but I thought the title somewhat appropriate. I am so aware that for many of you life has plunged into a different, somewhat unhappy state. I do wish that it could be better for you. For us life in all its apparently inconsequential minutiae indeed does go on! And so my travel tales continue. We were travelling north from Dunmara on the Buchanan Hwy following the Binns Track - almost.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Lancewood and Bullwaddi trees create a band of impenetrable scrub across NT. These dense scrublands defeated John Stuart on his first expedition north and later were dreaded by stockman driving cattle on the Murranji track pioneered by Nat Buchanan, hence the name. The Aborigines used the wood from the Lancewood to make tools, spears and other weapons. Dense scrub opening on to plains with ant hills like grave stones - brown, red and grey poked up eerily among the grass and scrub with cattle tucked in here and there.
Tumblr media
Fascinating countryside which echoes with the ghostly dusty cracking and rustling sounds of cattle being driven westward through the scrub - this was one of those stock routes forged by hardy characters. This is still a stock route! These days huge roaring beasts trailing enveloping clouds of dust hurtle passed you with their precious cargo bouncing behind.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
We crossed rivers wet and dry, cut through heavy scrub to emerge in savanna plains with grasses a few metres tall. Passed cattle and horses, stopping to investigate slick black blocks of? and bags of white stuff dotted along the road. We reckoned mineral supplements and course we hopped out to take a closer look - the black stuff smelled of molasses and something else. It was obviously very popular because there was a track of beaten hooves leading out of the trees to the big black lolly. And the white stuff was probably a mix of minerals I’m guessing.
Tumblr media
Don’t be fooled by this wee bit of bitumen. This was at the crossroads at Top Springs where the Buchanan intersects the Buntine Hwy which we had traversed 2 months earlier. The road very quickly returned to dirt and gravel.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
At some point we plunged into Jasper Gorge, a place that took my fancy 4 years ago. The poor old girl (the van not me although ….?!) was a little worse for wear when we pulled up that night to camp. We had a few ‘things’ to attend to. The first of which was a cupboard that had to be dismantled, a small cupboard (it’s a long story) but the rest was nothing that couldn’t be patched up with a bit of ingenuity AKA brute force, tin snips, cardboard, screws, strong webbing straps and lashings of good old duct tape. Man I love that stuff! The battery for the car freezer died (we think) but the generator brought the temp down a bit. To be on the safe side I pulled out as much as I could pack into the van freezer. We won’t go hungry - heaven forbid! That night we dined on ‘pasta carbonara de jour’ or rather ‘de tour’ - added bits included anchovies and capsicum.
Tumblr media
Jasper Gorge is truly gorgeous; so tranquil and quiet. Once we had recovered some equilibrium and calm we were serenaded by galahs, little corella, cockatoos and the maniacal call of the blue wing kookaburra. Beside the camping area a deep creek flowed by fringed each side with trees and pandanus. Quite idyllic!

If you didn’t catch Part 1 you can read up here. Kevin and Linda Leslie and friends were enjoying the warm, friendly atmosphere at Mintaro Hut and preparing for the hardest day of the track – crossing Mackinnon Pass.
Onward and upward
The day started under a thick cover of cloud so we were concerned that we would miss out on the magnificent views from the top of the pass. The track, while not particularly steep, climbs steadily as it zig-zags its way up the side of the pass. Each side of the track, the forest is dense and moist with bright green mosses and ferns through which small birds flutter.
One side of the track the valley dropped down steeply through misty treetops, while the other side the cliffs towered above us. Eventually, we reached the top of the tree line and started climbing through grassy slopes. Luckily for us, the clouds started to part. We were rewarded with views to die for as we looked right back along the valley we had just walked.
The incredible views to be had from the walk. Photo: Kevin Leslie.
At the top, there is a cairn dedicated to Quinton Mackinnon who cut the trail along the Clinton River in 1888. From here we could see the other side of the pass to where the Arthur River heads out to Milford Sound.
Snow-capped mountaintops and cascading waterfalls
All around us were snow-capped mountaintops where the melting snow formed hundreds of small waterfalls cascading down the cliff faces. Clouds were being pushed up over the pass with light winds to form long extended streaks of mist interspersed with rays of sunlight. As you sat and looked around you any aching limbs or sore feet were forgotten. It was just breathtaking.
Amongst this was a couple of Kia. These are a native parrot that has a large curved beak that’s very good at tearing apart things like hiking boots, backpacks, even car windscreen wipers! They are about as big as a galah and are very animated as they hop around looking for any unguarded pack that they can break into. You have to keep an eye on them as they were pretty determined.
Reaching the highest peak of the track
A little further on you come to the highest part of the track, at a day hut where there is a loo with a view that is unmatched. This is a good spot for lunch and thank goodness there are also no sandflies. You will rarely kind them above the tree line. It is tempting to linger here, but we still had a long descent down to the valley floor, then onto our final night’s stop at Dumpling Hut.
This was the hardest part of the track as you make your way around the side of a deep gully. Then it’s across a bridge then into the tree line again and then it’s down, down, down. There are beautiful spots to stop and rest as you make your way along the cascading creek. But there are lots of steps and tree roots and rocks you have to negotiate. It is better to take your time, as a slip here can be painful.
The amazing scenery from the top of McKinnon pass. Photo: Kevin Leslie
After thinking we would never make it to the bottom, we finally got onto level ground. We were all starting to feel stiff and sore by now. At this point, you can turn off the track and head past the guided walker’s hut and onto Sutherland Falls. Or as we did, stayed on the main track and went on to our last stop.
We were amongst the last to arrive that day but it was a sunny afternoon so we once again decided on a swim. Lots of others in the group were doing the same. No one stayed in for long, but we all felt better after our dip.
The last night
That night everyone in the kitchen hut chatted about their walk and compared experiences. It was a shame this was our last night. We had been carrying a bladder of wine with us and were rationing it out until now. We finished it off with the last of our chocolate and had an enjoyable evening. However, no one was staying up late as we still had 18k to the finish the next day.
Following the Arthur River, we headed off in the morning along the valley floor. As usual, there are lots of opportunities to photograph sections of the river with its beautiful clear waters that have large trout just lazing along with the current. Hugh tree trunks that have been washed down by floods or avalanche are easily seen sitting on the river bottom even though there were some very deep holes.
A snapshot of Dumpling hut along the track. Photo: Kevin Leslie
The valley started to widen along this section, as we were now walking beside Lake Ada. The track wound its way over a mixture of forests and grassy river flats as we made our way to the end. All along the way, there are regular distance markers and now we were counting them down.
Nearing the end of the track
As you near the end you find you are slowing your pace, wanting to savour the last stretch. All too soon you see the sign up ahead that says you have finished. Your Milford experience is over. A characteristic small ferry is there to take you on a short ride to the terminal at Milford Sound. Here you are suddenly thrust into the modern world of people, buses, and civilisation.
But your memory lingers of the last 4 days. Of the thick mossy forests, green ferns, and the snow-capped mountains that tower beside you every day. Of the beautiful clear waters of the Clinton and Arthur Rivers. Of the bird life and the evenings spent in the huts. And of the wonderful experience that is the Milford Track.
What’s your favourite hiking track in Australia or New Zealand?

Birding
A lot of the fun of this trip - for me - was my focus on birding, specifically on doing bird surveys wherever we were and reporting them on eBird.org, operated by Cornell University’s Lab of Ornithology.  Many of the surveys have been nominally stationary observations over 20 minutes, but there is sometimes a bit of flexibility about that.  If my 20 minutes is up and a new species pops up in front of me while I am entering the data, it seems silly not to include it.  It tells the researchers that the species is present and it might well have been there throughout the survey and I just didn’t see it.  Similarly, I often wandered around after lunch in the car, rarely more than 40-50 metres, but if I see a bird, I often need to move to see it well enough to identify it anyway.  On the other hand, a few of my reports have related to longer walks where I report the number of each species I see over, say, 500 metres.  A few times, my report has been a big fat zero, but most times I have seen at least a few birds - sometimes up to 30 species and occasionally several hundred birds when a flock of corellas or seagulls is present.
During the trip, I did ovewr 100 surveys, identified and reported more than 150 different species and counted (occasionally estimated) more than 5000 individual birds.
There have been a few really notable excursions for me (the Yowah Bore Drain, for example) and some notable sightings - either firsts for us (Horsfield’s Bushlark, for one) or just birds I saw really well when they are not commonly seen by us (such as the Major Mitchell Cockatoos we saw at Rankin Springs).
Particularly toward the end of the trip, I focussed a lot more on getting reasonable photos of many species - often very challenging, but I have posted numerous photos of more than 40 species on eBird and am slowly building my own collection of acceptable pics of as many species as I can.  I have decided to compile (progressively) a collection of acceptable photos of as many species as I can and to that end, I have set myself the task of going through the thousands of photos of birds I have, looking for the best 2 or 3 of each species.  This will be an ongoing challenge so more on my progress in a few years……
Just as an example of the fun birding can be, I had a really enjoyable half hour, half kilometre walk one evening in Mallacoota and it produced relatively few species, but was nonetheless quite exciting for me.  I walked along Develin’s Gully beside the Mallacoota caravan park - only a couple of hundred metres along a creek to the main river.  I didn’t really see anything much, a few little birds flashing past in the gloom and some further away chattering high in the trees.  But I saw a Great Cormorant (the eponymous shag on a rock) before turning back.  Almost as I did, an Osprey swooped past me and flew along the creek before disappearing as fast as it arrived.  I could hear a chainsaw/motorbike/camera/whatever sequence fairly loudly on the hill above me and imagined it might have been a lyrebird.  A few metres on, I flushed a female Superb Lyrebird only a couple of metres from the path.  It hopped away to the other side of the creek and stood there staring at me, maybe 7 or 8 metres away.  I had a good look but noticed that the noise up the hill had stopped - just long enough for its male generator to bound down the slope to join its partner – and they both wandered off quite imperiously into the shrubbery.  Quite elated, I decided to detour up the hill, rather than returning directly to the caravan and I saw a few small birds as I moved into brighter areas.  At the top of the hill, I had a good look at some large pigeons that Heather and I had initially thought were Common Bronzewings, but seeing them in better light, I realised that they were Wonga Pigeons.  I crept up on one that was scavenging along a tiny drain and got to within 2-3 metres before it saw me and waddled a few more metres away.  There were actually 11 of them within 20 metres of me so I could see them really well.  50 metres closer to the caravan, I noticed either a magpie or a magpie-lark in the middle of an oval, huddled down in the grass and hard to see.  I was just lining the binoculars up on it when the reason for its huddle flashed past - it was being attacked by an Australian Hobby that dive-bombed it a couple of times before settling in a tree nearby and offering me a really good view of it.  The magpie attempted to make good its escape and just made it into a tree before the hobby swooped at it again.  Just as it did, three galahs flew between the protagonists and last thing I saw, the Hobby was in hot pursuit of the galahs and out of sight.  I was almost struck dumb, but there was a final little bonus.  We had heard some bowerbirds (a very strange churring sound) earlier in the day, but I had not been able to see them properly - and here was one propped up in front of me not much more than head height in a tree as I made my way back to the van.  We had seen many Spotted Bowerbirds earlier in the trip, but these were Satin Bowerbirds - even prettier than the Spotteds.  It was a wonderfully exciting and rewarding walk and I went back next morning to photograph them – and nearly stepped on the female bowerbird and she posed quite beautifully for the camera no more than 2-3 metres away as she scratched through the leaf litter looking for breakfast.  I never got a pic of either raptor, but have some good ones of all the rest.
Anyone for more serious birding now?
