I always want Virtual Reality to be better than it is.

VR has been around for approaching a decade at this point, and companies keep trying to make it happen. I have seen the theory that Facebook (Meta) got into the VR game because they want hardware they can control without third parties stopping their data collection, but they appear to be downplaying it now.

So can VR be good? When is it going to happen?

My first headset was the HTC Vive, and it was fun at the time, but playing it today, it's pretty dire. Depressingly low resolution, major screen door effect, big, and bulky. Annoying external trackers. It is like 10% of the way to being what I want VR to be. I still have it but can't really play it since the poor quality usually leads to a one way trip to the floor.

I have tried the Oculus Quest 2, and it is kind of on its way. It has better controllers, some actual passthrough, and the screen door effect is much less pronounced. Too bad Facebook are evil. It's like 40% of the way to what I would consider a good headset to be.

I am looking at the Apple Vision Pro, and it's kind of getting there, it is like 70% of the way to being what I want VR to be. It has crystal clear video with no screen door, passthrough that actually works for professional use, and the hand and eye tracking appears to actually work which is impressive. It isn't for gaming and has absolutely no software support for the VR software people like. It appears to occupy a different niche to the cheaper gaming headsets, aimed at "Professional" use. It shares this trait with the quest pro.

We have come a long way in the last 10 years, but it will probably be another 10 years before virtual reality is something people actually want to use. Tech companies are never ones to give up though, and they will keep painfully iterating until they get there. I think to have a chance, to be the 100% of what I want it to be VR, I think it would need, including but not limited to;

Tethered and untethered use, allowing for local apps or connecting to a PC for extra horsepower. No bullshit lockdowns on software like they have today.

Functional hand tracking AND quality VR controllers for different applications. Both of these exist today but not in the same product at the same time for some reason.

Lightweight and cool. Fanless. Won't give you a spinal injury if you wear it for more than 3 hours. Semiconductor technology is probably about there or will be there soon, but Apple isn't fanless. Sadly Apple's battery in the pocket trick might be the only way to keep the weight down. Batteries just don't really change much, sorry!

Ultra high resolution. No screen door effect. Apple are about here but it's crazy expensive, so in 10 years I am sure the price will go down. VR isn't going to happen unless you can get Vision Pro quality at the baseline, for the price of a Meta Quest.

This really reminded me of when I wanted to get a tablet PC in like 2007 but quality tablets didn't exist yet. It was all massive chonky Windows CE garbage. I knew it was coming, everyone did, but tech wasn't there. The ipad releasing several years later is what really put them in the hands of consumers.

Mass software libraries for VR won't happen until these technical challenges are overcome, and by then, who is going to care? Maybe the vision pro is Apple taking something that already exists and putting it to the mass market, as they have done so many times before, but maybe this time it isn't going to take. Maybe VR is just never going to happen, but if it does, I want to be here for it. Play Half Life Alyx if you can, and never buy a Meta product if you can avoid it.

A tad bald, and the rendering is (as per usual with Apple emojis) a little bit much. My friend says he looks like a Smash Bros trophy. He looks well-meaning, but a bit... hollow... Cute, but he makes me nervous. I like the little crack in his egg shell.

Google Noto Color Emoji: 6/10

Not very chick-shaped, and I'm not loving the greyness of his egg. The position of his wings is cute, I love that he appears to be hoisting himself out of the egg, but the image as a whole is so flat, and doesn't really register in my mind as an animal. He looks like a bath toy.

Samsung: 7/10

Looks more like a parrot than a chick, but it's a very cute parrot, so it's okay. Props to this little guy for having a cracked egg, I'll never get tired of it! He's the most animal-looking chick to me so far.

Microsoft: 6.5/10

An upgraded version of the Google Noto chick, really. He has the same flatness, the same grey egg, but a more vacant expression, which is actually pleasant here. The other stared into my soul.

Whatsapp: 5/10

Did they throttle him before taking this picture? He's shaped like a bowling pin. I'm upset. I like the rendering on the egg.

Twitter: 8/10

This is everything Google Noto and Microsoft wishes their chicks were. The artists over at Twitter have so perfectly captured the brainlessness of a newborn animal. The lights are on with this animal, but no one's home. I think it was a nice choice to omit his wings, the simplicity is charming. Shaped like a friend. I like the little feathers sticking out of his head.

She's cute, but she makes me anxious... Her eyes are so soulless. this is not a chick, this is something else masquerading as a chick. Unlike all of the other chicks thus far, she doesn't appear at all to have put any effort into hatching. I think someone else cracked her egg for her.; released her unto the world like a demon. How I would animate the upcoming season if I were Ufotable

Spoilers below:

I'd wrap up the current Hashira Training Arc in about 5 to 6 episodes, and have Muzan get blown up by ep 6 or some number around there. (I watched the movie premiere and first ep with a lot of anime only content covered 2.5 chapters. HTC is 10 chapters long.) Since a usual season is about 11 eps, I'd animate the remaining 5 eps with Infinity Castle. I'd embellish the fuck out of Zenitsu's fight with UM 6, make it last a full episode.

And I'd show Shinobu vs Douma. The season ends with Shinobu's death. This will really show how strong the UMs are and leave some kind of impact like Rengoku's death did. Then I'll leave the rest of Infinity Castle for a full season in 2025/2026. Viewers will be hankering after the possibility of Kanao avenging her mentor.

(Most likely this isn't happening tbh; I am just thinking out loud.)

It looks so dead inside. I don't even want to know what it's gone through. This emoji doesn't fulfill their job as something joyful, it fills me with existensial terror. Solid 3/10.

Definitely better than the Apple one, I like the fact that it has some shine in its eyes and that it has a tongue. Pretty good, I'd say 6/10.

Still better than Apple, but worse than Google. I've never been a fan of how "sharp" Samsung emojis look if that makes sense? It still does its job though, 5/10.

I have many questions that I probably don't want an answer for, including but not limited to: Why is it red? Why is the mouth shaped like that? Why is the outline so thick? Why are the teeth like that? But like aside from me being extremely nitpicky, this is a pretty solid emoji. Like a 5/10 if I'm being generous.

Okay so even though I heavily disagree with the shade of the eyes and other little things, I weirdly like it. Even though the shape is... weird..., I think it wasn't a bad decision this time. I like how it's in a 3/4 view instead of front view, which gives it character and originality. The shading is an interesting detail, and makes this a really good emoji. A surprising 8/10.

I don't like it, and I don't think it should have or even deserves to have separate teeth. The yellow used in this is a nice shade overall, but doesn't really fit the vibe of emojis. 2/10.

Mozilla

Kinda similar feelings like the HTC one, as in I don't think it should have ears. The extremely washed out colours make it look displeasing, and makes me want to turn my screen brightness up. 1/10.

Crescent moon Emoji review:

Apple: Pretty decent. I don’t have too much problem with this. It does resemble a crescent moon but does not have the classic-moon texture. I mean, this looks more like an emblem than a real moon, or titan’s. 7/10 The moon is not really yellow.

Google: It does represent a crescent moon. I mean, the lack of texture is understandable since Google emojis are cartoon-ish. What I’d like is that they could add some textures and make the emoji lighter and it will be a 7/10. 5/10

Samsung: It’s not bad, but it could be better. The crescent moon itself has a nice shape. The shading is a nice idea and it is well done, but it does not really fit the image of this emoji. 7/10 better than Google.

Microsoft: This is not a crescent moon. This is a banana with it’s spots. 1/10 for effort.

WhatsApp: The colour is honestly really cute! The moon is not that glossy though. I like the shape but please you highlighted it too much. 8/10 for the color.

Twitter: Microsoft, but more like a moon so i think it deserves a 1.25/10

Facebook: UHhhh. What’s with the shading? I guess they wanted to make the emoji look 3d but honestly it also looks like a banana. 😭 3/10 you could have done so much better.

Skype: God please. Is this cheese mixed with a….banana? 0.5/10

Twitter emoji stickers: Chef’s kiss detail with the impact rests and the oceans. It is made with love but I’m not sure if the crescent moon is really like that. It looks sliced out. The colour is not that realistic. 9/10

joypixels: Just by looking at this emoji, it gives me strength and purity. They did a good decision to leave the holes simple and harmonize with the curious and soft moon! The shape is well done as well. 9/10

Openmoji: Cute. Resembles a moon. Simple moon staying with their friends in a circle of people. 5/10 I like the border.

Emojidex: Aesthetically pleasing color with a subtle gradient. This emoji is nicely shaped. The designers put their heart on the making of this emoji. 8/10 It’s is not even that good though.

Messenger: This is actually my favorite. Cold and freezing color and it also looks realistic and pleasing. The cell shading is on point. The homes are shaped beautifully and they look good Merged with the mix of cartoon-ish style and realistic style. 10/10 The crown goes to this astounding emoji.

LG: Who had the stupid idea to make the moon like this? It seems like there is even a smaller object forwards the moon and it’s bugging me. 5/10 Because I think it’s at least original and I like the texture.
