Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
best friend!hyojin who instantly becomes so close with you because of your shared interests. he loves to geek over food and video games and singing and space with you and he could never imagine he'd meet someone who loved all the same things as he did. you two get sucked into long discussions that last 2 hours, and then 4 hours, and then 6 hours, because neither of you wants to end it early. despite his busy schedule as a trainee, he always finds time to text you during breaks, and you're his biggest supporter until he finally can debut.
best friend!hyojin who never noticed just how beautiful you were until a couple months into your friendship where he finds himself spacing out just staring at you. he loves the way the light shines on your skin, warming it into the prettiest shade ever. he loves how your eyes sparkle in delight whenever he suggests you both get something to eat-- a habit you both share for your love of food. he loves how immersed you get in conversation, completely unable to stop talking once you've started conversing about one of your obsessions. not that he would ever want you to stop.
best friend!hyojin who is obsessed with your voice. whether it's when you're explaining something so animatedly, or the little sounds of delight you make when eating something delicious, or how sincere you sound whenever you are faced with a heavy topic. he loves how you can be lighthearted and fun when it's allowed, but also serious and mature when needed. and he loves that you're not too serious, but a perfect balance between both, always matching his energy and love for laughter and teasing.
best friend!hyojin who the members tease relentlessly because of how often he talks about you. they all (especially seungjun) are convinced that he has a crush on you and will never let him hear the end of it. hyojin himself doesn't deny the fact, but he can't bring himself to verbally say it out loud, whether to his bandmates or to you. he doesn't want to ruin what you two already have, regardless of the way his feelings for you keep growing every day.
best friend!hyojin who's mind practically shuts down when you mumble out how much you've loved him for months while drunk. he had been trying to get you to bed safely, all while listening to your intoxicated rambling about different topics. you switched from aliens to barbecue to how much you hated your college classes to your feelings. hyojin has no idea what he's supposed to do with how fast his heart is pounding, or how he'll ever face the consequences of the conversation in the morning when your head is clear.
best friend!hyojin who brings up the topic carefully and a bit timidly, absolutely terrified that whatever you said after 3 rounds of drinks was entirely the opposite of how you felt sober. when you bashfully confess that yes you had meant everything you said when drunk, hyojin can barely process the information.
boyfriend!hyojin who asks you to be his girlfriend after taking you out to get your favourite food because he knows that's the only way he'd ever want someone to ask to date him. he smiles so fondly at you when you accept his offer, excitement and a little impatience for what the future will hold, but he's not scared of a thing because he knows he has someone who he loves wholeheartedly by his side now.
boyfriend!hyojin who's love language continues to be similar as when he was just your best friend. he loves long conversations and hours playing video games or trying new foods together. when you're both painfully full from delicious food, you'll curl up together and watch him play mario kart; something that yuto had especially gotten him interested in recently. hyojin complains whenever you distract him with a cheek kiss and make him crash, but he secretly loves how much you love to distract him.
boyfriend!hyojin who invites you to the recording studio with him to watch as he records an album. after every take, he always asks for your opinion, even though in your mind every single time he sings anything it sounds like the most angelic thing you've ever heard. you could absolutely never get tired of hearing his heavenly vocals, and he has to get used to you asking him to sing for you almost every day. he doesn't mind, though; he could never mind when it's you asking for something. unless you're asking for his food-- that's where he has to draw the line. even if you are his girlfriend.
boyfriend!hyojin who always has to hear your daily concerns about his scalp health. after the third time he had sported bright red hair, you had started to get worried about him permanently damaging his scalp. and while you still love the look on him, you're quick to research helpful hair products for him to use. on days when he's absolutely too tired from practice to do almost anything, you always offer to wash his hair for him, giving him a head massage which turns into a neck massage which turns into a full back massage all because his body is so sore and worn out and you hate to see him in any type of pain.
boyfriend!hyojin who always plans dates even when his schedule is a bit more packed than usual. you're not sure how he's able to balance everything all at once, but he does it seamlessly, and it becomes one of the many many things you adore about him. he always does his best to text you every day, just to see how you're doing. even when he comes back home so late that you're already asleep, and leaves early before you're awake, he'll leave sticky notes around the room for you to find when you wake up or a good morning text reminding you that he loves you.
boyfriend!hyojin who has been keeping a ring that he had bought months ago hidden in his bedside table drawer, pondering over when the right time to give it to you was. he's confident that you'll say yes, but he wants to try to make the moment as romantic as possible, just to show you how much you mean to him. he asks seungjun (who self-proclaimed he was an expert at love despite being single) how he should go about it, and starts to plan out the whole proposal a few weeks in advance.
fiancé!hyojin who's new obsession is calling you his wife even though you've barely started planning for the wedding. every time he sees the ring on your finger, he feels so thankful to have met you and be able to call you his, and although he was already romantic as your boyfriend, he becomes even more so as your fiancé.
fiancé!hyojin who helps plan the wedding with you, wanting to be involved in every aspect of it but still allowing you to choose almost everything from the venue to the flowers to the decor. he gives his opinions on wedding dresses before sending you off with your bridal party to pick one without him knowing. he's determined that he will not see you in a white dress until you're walking down the aisle towards him-- a moment he's dreamed of since he first became your boyfriend.
fiancé!hyojin who can't contain the amount of love he has for you when he sees you walking down the aisle. the dress is gorgeous, but it's nothing compared to your beauty and he tears up watching you with the biggest smile on his face. he holds your hand so preciously throughout the ceremony, his eyes never leaving yours. he thinks he's never been so in love with you before this moment, and he's certain that his love for you will only grow after he can call himself your husband.
fiancé!hyojin who's vows are filled with all sorts of lighthearted stories and moments from since you were friends until now, as well as bittersweet retellings of the times when you've meant the most to him. the way he reads them to you-- laughing at all the absurd moments you've had together; how you confessed to him while drunk; his constant nagging paired with your constant worrying being a combination for unlimited headaches-- has you falling in love with him all over again. you relish in his cute giggles filled with so much love for you, but you also cry at how sincere and genuine his words sound, knowing that he spent weeks writing and rewriting what he wanted to say to you on the day.
fiancé!hyojin who cries just as hard as you did hearing your vows. he regrets having the ceremony so long because all he wants to do is slide another ring your finger and adorn one of his own and be able to kiss you and call you his wife, but he has to wait until after the vows to be able to do it. when he is finally able to slip the ring on your finger, his eyes hold so much affection for you that it's almost dizzying, and you're unable to contain your smiles as you get closer to finally being pronounced husband and wife.
husband!hyojin who kisses you like he's never kissed you before when the officiant finally gives him the go, holding your waist so carefully and dipping you elegantly down just enough to get the perfect wedding kiss photos. he hears the camera shutters click, capturing the moments, and he smiles, knowing he'll be able to look back on your first kiss as husband and wife however often he wants.
husband!hyojin who sings all your favourite songs to you during the reception. he has a setlist planned, but also takes requests from you, putting on his best performance for his beloved wife, unable to take his eyes off of you watching him in your pretty dress.
husband!hyojin who cherishes you every day, especially leading up to his military enlistment, knowing he'll be forced apart from you for the longest time since you had met. he loathes the day he'll have to say goodbye to you, but he's determined to do his best and get back to you as soon as he can. on the day of enlistment, he hugs you tighter than usual, and kisses you with as much passion as he possibly has in his body, before smiling and waving goodbye to you as if the whole ordeal was just another normal day.
military husband!hyojin who texts you whenever he's allowed to use his phone, and calls whenever you're available to. he wishes he could be with you more than anything, but he's excited to be able to see you during his musical performances that are quickly approaching.
military husband!hyojin who knows you'll be in the audience to see him in the musical, and so his eyes search for you as soon as he's up on stage. he smiles so big when he sees you in the front row watching him, and his eyes never leave you throughout the entire time he's performing. you soak up the sound of his lovely voice which you hadn't heard in person for months.
military husband!hyojin who when he's finally discharged can barely keep his hands off of you. he was never the clingy type, but the lengthy separation has him kissing you whenever he gets the chance, and holding your hand whenever he can't. you treat him to his favourite meal as a post military celebration, and you've never seen him so happy since your wedding day.
husband!hyojin who works twice as hard at everything he does after his enlistment, knowing that there's nothing more that can separate him from you. he lives every day in a reality that had only felt like a distant dream when he was in the military; waking up every morning with you by his side, and falling asleep every night with you safely in his arms. he's thankful every day for how lucky he got with you, and he makes sure he knows how much you mean to him. but in the end, he's still your precious, nerdy, lovable best friend who you met as a teenager, dated, and was lucky enough to marry and call your husband.

The Day I Ran Into You

Warnings: Feeling left out, anxiety, having trouble making friends, I think that’s it.
Thank you so much for the request, Leo! I hope you enjoy it!
Third Person POV
When (Y/n) got the news that they would be moving to Korea to study, they were very excited. A new adventure with millions of possibilities waiting for them. (Y/n) packed their bags as soon as they knew when they were leaving. (Y/n) had fixed a small apartment that wasn’t too close to the university nor was it too far away, it was a bit expensive but (Y/n) also found a job so it would be fine. (Y/n) was looking forward to meeting new friends and exploring a new city.
However, even though (Y/n) had done everything they could to prepare for this trip, they couldn’t stop their anxiety from ruining the experience. It turns out that making friends was way harder than (Y/n) had expected, throughout the first week of university, they hadn’t met a single person to hang out with. It seemed like everyone had already found their cliques, everyone but (Y/n).
The apartment might have been small but during the night as (Y/n) was feeling lonely, it seemed so vast. The walls span across the country, the roof nowhere in sight, the small night light only illuminating the shadows that dwell around the room.
During the start of the second week, (Y/n) was ready to give up, they were ready to pack up their things and return home. That was until they met two boys who finally made the anxiety shrink from a raging storm to a gentle breeze.
It was during lunchtime on Tuesday that (Y/n) ran into a guy with bright red hair, he was dressed in a dark green hoodie and ripped jeans. The guy was coming around a corner and (Y/n) didn’t see him so they ran right into each other, fortunately, it wasn’t more than a bump so no one got hurt.
“Oh, I’m so sorry. Are you okay?” The guy stopped and gave (Y/n) a bright smile while also looking them up and down to see if he caused any injuries or anything. “Um, no, no, um, yes, I’m okay, sorry for running into you,” “It’s fine! It was my fault too. My name is Hyojin! I’m an Astronomy student,” Hyojin reached out his hand for (Y/n) to shake, still a friendly and bright smile on his lips. (Y/n) reached out and took his hand, giving it a gentle shake. “Hi, my name is (Y/n), I’m a (subject) student,” “Are you a first-year student?” “Yeah,” (Y/n) felt a bit nervous to stand there and talk to Hyojin but he was very friendly and his aura calmed her nerves. “I’m in the second year, OH SEUNGJUN! Hey,” Suddenly Hyojin saw someone behind (Y/n) and he began shouting and waving to catch the person's attention. (Y/n) turned around and saw another guy who waved back as he jogged over to where Hyojin and they were standing.
“This is Seungjun, Seungjun this is (Y/n),” “Hello, nice to meet you!” “Hi,” “Sorry, I got caught up with (Y/n) so I forgot we were meeting for lunch, about that, am I keeping you from meeting up with your friends?” “No, not really, I kind of don’t have anyone to eat lunch with,” “Just today or always?” Seungjun asked, his eyes sparkled warmly. “Ya, you can’t just ask them that,” “It’s okay, um I guess always because well I’ve had a hard time finding friends here,” “Are you an exchange student?” “Um kind of, well, I’m not from Korea originally or anything but I’m enrolled for the entire program so not just one semester or so,” “Woah that’s so cool, I don’t think I’d have it in me to move to another country to study, not alone at least,” Seungjun said. The two boys were very easy to speak with, their energy made (Y/n) open up more too, daring to actually speak and show some of their personality.
“Hey, so um, lunch is almost over now, hehe, seems like we all will have to skip it from talking too much. Anyways, Hyojin and I usually have a little picnic on Thursdays after our classes, because some weeks we don’t have time to meet up before that so it’s sort of mandatory for us to do it. Wanna join us this Thursday? It was so nice talking with you so I’d at least love to get to know you more!” “I’d like that too, so what do you say?” (Y/n) took a deep breath, they never thought that them running into a guy with bright red hair could lead to friendship. “Yes, I’d love too,” “Give me your number, I’ll text you the details of when and where and what you should bring!” “Okay!” Hyojin handed (Y/n) his phone and let them add their contact to it. “See ya on Thursday if we don’t run into each other before then!” “Bye,”
Thursday rolled around and classes were over, (Y/n) was at a convenience store to get some drinks for them and the two boys as (Y/n) had been tasked with bringing drinks. (Y/n) was feeling excited to meet with the two nice boys once again, they thought they’d be nervous but they weren’t, probably because Hyojin and Seungjun had been so nice and welcoming. After buying some different drinks, (Y/n) began walking over to the location Hyojin had sent. When they got their, they searched for the bright red hair but couldn’t find it, (Y/n) felt sad, had they been played? Had the boys just been fooling around? That was until they heard two voices shouting their name.
“(Y/n)! Over here!” They turned a bit to the left and saw two boys jumping and waving their arms around as they shouted (Y/n)’s name. Hyojin no longer had bright red hair but now he had a light blonde color. “Hey, I was trying to look for you by your hair color but you changed it,” “Yeah, I got tired of the red, also my teachers didn’t appreciate it, said it was distracting,” As he said distracting he made a funny expression and used a mocking tone, making his two friends laugh. “Well, the red looked good on you but so does the blonde,” “Thanks, (Y/n)!”
And so the three sat in a park, talking about their lives both before meeting and the most recent days, (Y/n) didn’t feel like an outsider or like they had just met the two boys two days ago, no (Y/n) felt like they had known each other their entire lives. Finally, they could enjoy this adventure. Finally, that small apartment wasn’t vast and lonely, no it was slowly getting filled with happy memories, photos, trinkets, and moments from hanging out with the two guys. And Thursday picnics were no longer just a Hyojin and Seungjun thing, it was now a Hyojin, Seungjun, and (Y/n) thing.

spaced in, spaced out

word count: 4.5k
hyojin-centric
hyojin wholeheartedly loves space; the big kind, like the sky and the planets and the brilliant, brilliant stars, but also the small kind, like the time he gets to himself when everything screams louder than it should.
mildly inspired by on the run LA ep 22, time stamp 10:25
a/n: i’ve posted this on ao3 and have since orphaned it (due to unnecessary worrying) so if you recognize it, that’s likely why.
warning: mentions of exhaustion / depressive symptoms
on days when practice runs late (which is almost every day when you don’t know when to stop; a trait hyojin admits he has but refuses to see the problem with), hyojin likes to look at the sky. when he’s feeling lazy, or when dance practice is exceptionally gruelling, he can only really manage to make it to the nearest window and do his best to look up and over the surrounding building’s walls. but when he’s feeling particularly active, he’ll take the stairs up to the rooftop patio and enjoy the sight. from there, he has a clear, unobstructed, view.
not that it’s all that clear, though. light pollution, residual smog, and occasionally cloudy skies mask what hyojin imagines would be a stunning scene without. he’s looked up some night sky pictures on nasa’s official gallery, and they were absolutely breathtaking. so were their ridiculously high quality photos of the solar system, and the milky way, and all the constellations. he has these images saved in a neat little folder on his phone, for days when his own view doesn’t cut it. one day, hyojin would like to see them in real life. maybe he could visit an actual observatory with professional telescopes.
but as it stands, all hyojin can see from his place on earth is the moon, and, if he’s lucky, a couple of stars. on most days, that’s enough. he can observe how far along the lunar cycle the moon is, and he can close his eyes and make a tiny wish to the first star he saw that night. he’s not sure if his wishes help — luck is a fickle thing that he’s never quite had enough of — but he figures it can’t hurt. and after his little ritual, he can return back to his practice room or his dorm with a peaceful mind. he’s here. he’s grounded. he has a more or less beautiful sky to look at. on most days, that’s enough.
but on other days, it’s not. like today.
for one, it’s not even nighttime. a glance at the clock in the practice room tells him that it’s 17:34, which he eventually translates into 5:34 p.m.. it’s much too early to look to the sky for comfort, and it is definitely much too early for the type of crisis that hyojin normally only gets very late at night or very early in the morning. the ones where he can’t do anything besides sit in place like some useless tree stump while he questions his life.
“do you want to go get dinner?”
hyojin hates wasting time, so he doesn’t let them happen often, but every now and then one sneaks by him. especially when he’s overworked and tired and doesn’t have the energy to fight it off. he’s not sure what’s happening just yet, but he can sense that familiar, unsettling feeling simmering somewhere very near.
“hyung, you good?” hyojin hears, and he jolts in place where he’s sitting on the practice room floor. yuto’s looking down at him, all wide eyed and polite, and seungjoon is draped over the poor boy’s back.
“yeah, sorry, i was just … thinking.” hyojin replies lamely, cursing himself for his lack of a better explanation. all of these thoughts, and not a single one is of any use outside of his head.
“seungjoon hyung asked if you were getting dinner with us, but you didn’t answer.” yuto continues. hyojin pauses to process this, before noticing just how quiet the room is. a glance around the room confirms his suspicions; the room is empty, save for the three of them. “where did everyone else go?” hyojin asks.
“jaeyoung and minkyun said they were going to the studio after practice today to work on a new song, remember? and changyoon went to start a vlive. they all said goodbye before they left?” seungjoon explains.
huh. hyojin doesn’t recall any of this. “right, now i remember!” hyojin lies, perhaps a bit too eagerly. he can feel seungjoon staring at him, but he avoids the impulse to look back and stubbornly maintains eye contact with yuto instead.
“so … dinner?” yuto asks.
hyojin hesitates. he is hungry, but going out to eat means talking to someone to order. it means maintaining a conversation with his members, or at the very least keeping up with what they’re talking about. they’re usually really good at sensing when doesn’t want to talk, and they never push him, but hyojin doesn’t want to show off how drained he’s feeling at the moment. just thinking about it makes his head hurt.
“i don’t really want to go out today.” hyojin confesses. seungjoon and yuto nod together like a pair of synchronized bobble heads. cute.
“i’m kind of getting a headache, so i think i’ll head back to the dorm for a bit and take a nap. maybe i can go live sometime today, too. did anyone say they wanted to go after changyoon?” hyojin asks.
“no, i don’t think so.” seungjoon replies, which causes hyojin to accidentally make eye contact with him. darn. seungjoon can be ridiculously perceptive when he wants to be, especially when it comes to reading him. hyojin is not in the mood to be read right now.
seungjoon must come to some sort of conclusion in his head, because he stops staring at hyojin with that weird, ambiguous gaze. “i’ll drop some food off at your place after we’re done. that kimchi fried rice and those dumplings you like.” seungjoon says decisively, before pushing himself off from yuto’s back. “are you coming down with us, at least?”
“yeah, let’s go.” hyojin mumbles as he stands up. his muscles are sore, more likely a result of yesterday’s practice than today’s. the teachers went particularly hard yesterday. it was this constant series of ‘again, again, again’ for all these minuscule details that even yuto seemed to have a hard time catching. but they were much better afterwards because of it, so hyojin figures he shouldn’t complain.
he’s happy to listen to yuto and seungjoon babble about dance practice as they walk down the stairs; partially because he loves hearing the passion in their voices as they discuss how they want to present themselves, and partially because he doesn’t think he has the power to sustain a conversation right now. thankfully, neither of the two push him to say anything. he’s not sure whether it’s because he said he was getting a headache or because they can sense something is actually off with him, but he’s grateful nonetheless.
hyojin remembers to smile and say goodbye when he parts ways with seungjoon and yuto. then, he puts his phone on do not disturb before starting his trek home. he doesn’t want to talk to anyone just yet.
-
hyojin sits down on his bed and he doesn’t cry. he simply thinks.
sometimes he feels like a fake. he’s been told by dozens of people that his singing voice is so emotional. that it conveys a depth of feeling that’s heart wrenchingly beautiful when it needs to be, and technically perfect when it doesn’t. and he’s grateful for that, he truly is. but sometimes, he worries that it isn’t enough.
not that he doesn’t express emotions, because he does. he knows he does. anyone who’s observed hyojin long enough can see it. but the one thing he feels like he hasn’t openly expressed is sadness. which is understandable, after all, since he’s an idol. people come to him and his music for comfort, not to hear him complain. but he’s starting to believe that his absolute inability to convey this basic emotion is what’s causing all of his weird crises.
hyojin wishes he could cry. but he hasn’t cried in so long that he fears he no longer knows how to. bottled up emotions don’t free themselves easily, not when he’s tightened the cap so hard and so often that he’s not sure where the bottle ends and the cap begins.
‘don’t you feel bad?’ he chides himself.
‘yes,’ his inner voice croaks.
‘then prove it,’ he thinks. he challenges himself. he demands.
hyojin doesn’t cry, so he stands up. it’s time for him to get a grip on himself. he takes a shower and changes into comfortable clothes. he doesn't have anything else to do for the rest of the day, so he tries to take a nap as well. it’s hard at first — he’s oddly cold under the power of the air conditioning (that he never bothered to learn how to turn off) and his mind is still whirring with empty, useless, thoughts — but his sheer exhaustion overpowers it all as he falls into a shallow, troubled rest.
-
when he wakes up, his room is much darker then it was before. he reaches out for his phone, his hand haphazardly scrabbling for purchase on his nightstand before finally picking it up. squinting, he manages to read the time: 8:19 p.m.. cool, so he got around two hours of sleep. he figures that’s not too bad. he got four the other day when he was actually trying to go to bed.
for a moment, hyojin contemplates attempting to sleep again before deciding against it. he’s a little drowsy, but he’s not physically tired anymore. with that in mind, he gets up, slips his phone in his pocket, and opens his bedroom door. he could use a cup of water.
the lights are on somewhere out there, which hyojin guesses probably means that changyoon is on the couch playing kart rider or something. his assumption is proven to be correct when he spots changyoon, in sweatpants and a t-shirt, mumbling under his breath at his phone.
“what are you doing?” hyojin asks, turning towards the kitchen to pour himself some water. just before he looks away, he sees changyoon flinch. “n-nothing, i was just texting minkyun,” he hears changyoon stammer awkwardly.
hyojin pauses. suspicious. changyoon is definitely hiding something. hyojin considers confronting his roommate, but before he gets the chance to do so he feels his stomach grumble. right, he skipped dinner.
“did you already eat?” hyojin asks instead, taking his cup of water with him as he walks to the couch. it’s then that he notices the nearly empty takeout box of dumplings on the coffee table.
“never mind, i guess you have.” hyojin answers himself, putting his cup on the table and sitting down next to changyoon. “hmm, what should i eat?”
“oh, right!” changyoon says, popping the last dumpling in his mouth and standing up. “i ran into seungjoon and yuto on the way here. they gave me some takeout for you,” he explains as he walks to the fridge.
hyojin had forgotten about that, but he remembers now. “yeah, i think he said he was going to do that. kimchi fried rice and dumplings, right?” hyojin asks. he could really go for some dumplings right about now, especially after seeing changyoon eating.
changyoon freezes. “o-oh, so seungjoon told you,” he chuckles nervously, pulling a clear plastic bag out of the fridge and bringing it back to where hyojin is sitting on the couch. he’s trembling, which is odd. hyojin already has a very bad feeling about this, but he doesn’t want to say anything yet. surely changyoon wouldn’t do something so dumb as to -
“where are my dumplings?” hyojin demands, after opening the styrofoam container and only finding fried rice. he looks inside the empty plastic bag one more time, just to be sure (they’re not there), before glancing at the empty styrofoam container that changyoon was eating out of before. funnily enough, it’s the same type of takeout box as his fried rice container.
“you ate my dumplings?” hyojin shrieks, immediately grabbing a pillow from the couch. changyoon has already wisely retreated to the very end of the room, but hyojin wastes no time in lunging to where changyoon escaped to with agility akin to his deer nickname. changyoon futilely attempts to dart out of the way, but hyojin manages to grasp the collar of his shirt with one hand while he smacks changyoon with the pillow in his other hand. “what - were - you - thinking?” hyojin hisses, punctuating each word with a thump from the pillow. he notices that changyoon is covering his head, so he makes sure to hit the deserving food thief extra hard.
“i’m sorry, i’m sorry!” changyoon wails as he drops to the ground to shield himself further. “i was hungry!”
“and you thought to take my food, you jerk?” hyojin yells, dropping and holding changyoon down with his knee while he continues to bash him with the pillow. “you didn’t even leave any behind for me!”
“i’m sorry, i’m sor- ow! stop hitting me, please, i’ll buy you more dumplings!” changyoon begs, and it’s enough for hyojin to graciously let changyoon go. “you better,” hyojin threatens, standing up. “you’re lucky i’m weak right now, you brat.”
“i’m sorry, what? you call that weak?” changyoon asks incredulously, sitting up and leaning back on his hands. “was that pillow made out of rocks?”
“if i hadn’t just woken up, and i wasn’t so hungry …” hyojin trails off.
“you know what, i don’t even want to think about it,” changyoon decides. “but the food stall closes at 10, so we should get going if you want the dumplings tonight.”
“i’m sorry, we?” hyojin asks incredulously. “why do i have to go out?
“don’t you want to personally make sure i get the right ones?” changyoon offers.
“no, because i can tell you right now which ones i want — pork, by the way — and if you forget you can text me.” hyojin says.
“but i don’t want to go outside alone! it’s dark, and it’s scary!”
“sucks for you, then, you shouldn’t have eaten my food in the first place. and since when have you been scared of the dark?”
“please?” changyoon asks. “i’ll buy you ice cream if you do.”
hyojin pauses. ice cream does sound really good right now. “okay, fine.” he decides. “but i’m not changing.”
“yeah, me neither. the food stall lady has known us for forever, though, so it’s probably fine.” changyoon reasons, standing up. “let me get my wallet and then we can go.”
“okay,” hyojin agrees. “i need to fix my hair anyways, it’s probably a mess.”
hyojin manages to tidy up his bedhead/warrior hair and find a cap in his room, but changyoon still hasn’t come out yet. “are you coming?” hyojin calls, walking out of his room to sit on the couch. he picks up his unfinished glass of water and takes a sip. he wouldn’t want to have damaged his throat after his screaming fit.
changyoon walks into the living room, looking sheepish. “so, um, how mad would you be if i told you that i think i left my wallet at the company?”
“... you’re serious.” hyojin deadpans incredulously.
“yeah, uh, i just realized i left my coat in the room where i did my vlive, and i normally carry my wallet in my pocket.” changyoon explains, before wincing. maybe he was expecting to get hit again?
hyojin sighs. “it’s fine. it’s on the way, anyway. let’s go?” he asks, before downing what’s left of his drink and standing up.
changyoon nods happily. “you’re the best and i love you?” he offers.
hyojin pushes changyoon. “ew. you can be sappy after i’ve eaten,” he laughs. “now get me some food.”
-
“come in with me?” changyoon asks, once they’re in front of WM. “i swear i saw the ghost last time, and i don’t want to face it alone.”
“well, why do i have to see it?” hyojin grumbles, but he opens the door for changyoon anyway. hyojin’s not heartless enough to ditch him, especially when he’s buying him food. but if he’s being really honest, he’d accompany changyoon regardless.
“what room did you leave your stuff in?” hyojin asks as they climb up the stairs, before coming to a realization.
“should we have asked the security guards for the keys?” hyojin pauses, before turning around. “wait, we should have, hold on, let’s go back -“
“wait!” changyoon calls, his voice amplified in the empty stairwell. hyojin reaches to cover his ears.
“oh, sorry, that was too loud,” changyoon realizes belatedly. “but trust me, we don’t need the keys.”
“what do you mean we don’t need the keys? the security guards always lock everything up after the office workers leave.” hyojin says, puzzled.
“minkyun’s in that room, he’s the one that told me i left my sweater there.” changyoon explains, as he continues to climb the stairs. instinctively, hyojin follows him.
“but why didn’t you tell me before? you could have told me that minkyun was there when you said that you left your wallet here.” hyojin asks.
“well i - uh, i forgot?” changyoon stammers.
hyojin frowns. changyoon is somehow being even more suspicious then when he ate hyojin’s dumplings, which is very confusing. something about his words are not adding up. he opens his mouth to ask something else, before being interrupted by changyoon.
“okay, we’re here!” changyoon exclaims, opening the door. except it doesn’t lead to the second or third floor like hyojin had expected.
“why are we on the roof?” hyojin asks, following changyoon before stopping in his tracks.
“oh hey, you’re here!” minkyun exclaims.
except it’s not just minkyun. the rest of the members are all there, bizarrely sitting in a circle on a large blanket on the roof. there’s various soda cans scattered around the edge of their huddle, and a couple of chip bags lie in the middle. if hyojin didn’t know better, he’d guess by the food that it was a poorly prepared picnic or a decently prepared sleepover.
“what …?” hyojin trails off in confusion.
next to him, changyoon breathes a sigh of relief and runs towards the rest of the members. “i am never doing this again. that was the most stressful hour or whatever of my life. i am incapable of lying, i swear he almost caught me twice, i have aged because of this -“
“oh, be quiet, this was your fault anyway.” minkyun snaps, but without a single hint of malice in his voice.
“so, um?” hyojin asks, frozen in place, as changyoon and minkyun bicker in the background. “what?”
“well, uh, this might sound pretty dumb, but you were really out of it in practice today.” jaeyoung starts, standing up and walking towards him. the rest of them do the same, abandoning their drinks and their snacks. “you were listening to what the teacher said and doing the dance moves correctly and everything, but it was like you weren’t actually there? you didn’t even say ‘bye’ back when minkyun and i left.”
darn. he was being obvious. hyojin opens his mouth, ready to give some kind of excuse, but seungjoon cuts him off.
“we wanted to ask you about it, but we didn’t know what to say and we didn’t want to make it awkward for you. and you mentioned how looking at the sky clears your mind, right? so we thought it would be nice to stargaze together? except it’s really cloudy …” seungjoon trails off.
hyojin looks up. seungjoon’s right, he can barely see the moon behind the clouds, let alone any stars. but the mere fact that his members came together and planned this in the first place is really, really nice.
hyojin looks around again and thinks. he knows for a fact that no one had chips at their dorm (seungjoon recently confiscated them all and donated them to the staff when he was feeling particularly sensitive about his self induced diet), so someone had went out and bought all the snacks so they’d have something to eat. someone had brought drinks so they wouldn’t get thirsty. someone had lugged this very big blanket up many flights of stairs so they’d have someplace clean to sit. someone had suggested doing this because they thought he felt bad, and someone had planned the event, even taking care to keep it a secret, to make him feel better. and they did this in their spare time, instead of practicing more or taking a well deserved break, for him.
they planned this all for him.
jaeyoung takes his silence as a bad thing, and hurriedly chimes in. “i mean, this might not have been what you were thinking of when you said you liked the galaxy, and we can always do something else! we don’t have a group practice tomorrow anyway, so we can do something fun tonight.”
“no, no! i’m just … this is good. actually, this is perfect. i - you didn’t have to do this, but it’s really thoughtful, and i?” hyojin buffers, completely lost for words.
seungjoon takes his arm. “you can just say thank you, and come sit with us.” he laughs, guiding hyojin back to their blanket where they’ve conveniently left a space for him to sit.
yuto hands him a coke as he takes his place, and hyojin wordlessly opens it and takes a sip. “thank you,” hyojin says, after a short pause. “i’m serious. this is one of the nicest things anyone has ever done for me.”
“you’re always trying to take care of us, yeah? we can do this for you.” minkyun says, and it’s so thoughtful hyojin winces a little. he’s not in the right headspace to vent about his emotions right now. he’s not even sure if he has the right words for them. maybe later, when he has them sorted out in his head, he’ll share them with the others. but for now, he just wants to spend some time together, in each other's proximity.
hyojin normally looks to the sky to clear his head, but for once, his mind is blissfully empty. something about this entire situation brings him genuine peace and he’s extremely grateful for that. it’s not like he tries to overthink or overwork himself, but he somehow ends up overdoing things anyway. very rarely does hyojin let himself sit back and just do things. very rarely does hyojin let himself be content with just being enough, and not more. right here and right now, though, hyojin feels like enough.
“so that’s why changyoon ate my dumplings.” hyojin realizes belatedly.
the rooftop was silent before, but somehow it becomes even quieter. “changyoon stole your food?” yuto whispers in horror.
“okay, in my defence!” changyoon screams, raising his hand. “i wouldn’t have had to resort to this if you guys didn’t make me bring him here! you know i’m bad at lying, and you still chose me! i needed a reason to be nervous in front of him!”
“and you’re still alive?” seungjoon asks, shocked. “after eating his food?”
“barely.” changyoon complains. “he makes a pillow hurt.”
“i knew you wouldn’t be so dumb as to eat my food for no reason.” hyojin mutters under his breath.
“do you know how many times i nearly had a heart attack because of you?” changyoon begins, pointing an accusatory finger at hyojin. “when you came out of your room i was so stressed. we were all texting each other trying to make plans, and i was eating your food, and i had to pretend i was texting minkyun about something normal and not this whole surprise event. and then i had to make a dumb excuse to get you here, and i said i left my wallet in my coat — why would i even wear a coat, it’s summer?”
hyojin didn’t even notice that. probably because he was so caught up on the food he was missing that he didn’t even see the signs right in front of him.
“i realized it the second after i said it, but i’m so grateful you didn’t call me out for it. and then you asked me about the keys, and of course we didn’t need the keys because everyone was already here, so i had to make up another lie about minkyun, except it didn’t even make sense because i totally would have mentioned it before, and this was just an overall traumatic experience. kim hyojin, never ask me another question again.” changyoon finishes dramatically.
“but we wouldn’t have made you do this alone if you didn’t try to add hyojin to the group chat. this is technically your own fault.” minkyun points out, and hyojin frowns. “what groupchat?” hyojin asks.
“you didn’t get the notifications?” seungjoon asks, and hyojin shakes his head.
“so seungjoon tried to make a groupchat with all the members except you so we could figure out what to do together, right?” minkyun starts. “but changyoon, this absolute idiot, literally asks, ‘oh, why aren’t we just using the groupchat we already have’ and adds you. why do you think we left him out in the first place?”
“it was an honest mistake!” changyoon whines. “anyone could have done it!”
“but you did it.” minkyun teases, and changyoon stutters out excuses.
“wait, but you had no clue that we were doing this?” jaeyoung asks. “i figured we ruined it after we added you to the groupchat by accident.”
“i didn’t even get the notifications, though, are you -? oh.” hyojin says.
“what?” yuto asks.
“i turned my notifications off after i said bye to you and seungjoon.” hyojin realizes.
“then i didn’t even ruin anything! it didn’t have to be me in the first place!” changyoon screams. “this is so unfair!”
“but hey, at least you were successful.” seungjoon points out, and everyone else nods.
“the emotional trauma? that you put me through? what about that?” changyoon asks, but he’s interrupted by the sound of jaeyoung slapping his own arm.
“sorry, mosquito.” jaeyoung explains sheepishly.
“shoot, we forgot about bugs.” seungjoon sighs. “do you want to just go inside? we can order chicken or something.”
“actually, that sounds great right now. i haven’t had dinner yet, and i’m so hungry.” hyojin says happily.
“you didn’t have dinner? i literally brought you food!” seungjoon complains.
“okay, but after changyoon ate my dumplings, did you really think i was going to focus on eating over revenge?”
seungjoon pauses. “yeah, never mind. but still!”
“it’s okay, i’ll eat it later.” hyojin says. “but let’s order something in for now? and we should probably clean all this up, too.”
“we’re going inside? good, i’m getting cold.” yuto adds, standing up and picking up his empty coke can and a half eaten bag of chips.
“do you want to sleep over in the practice room?” minkyun suggests, laughing. “we’re already ordering chicken, this is basically our trainee days all over again.”
“you know what, i’m actually down for that.” jaeyoung says, grinning. “if they let us do it five years ago, they’ll let us do it now.”
“honestly?” hyojin asks, smiling one of his first real smiles. he hasn’t been this content for a while. “that sounds really, really good.”
it’s been a while, hyojin thinks as they clean up, since he’s been truly happy like this. it's been a while, he thinks, since everything has felt right. but here, in this space with five of the people he loves the most, he feels like enough. and for now, that’s all that matters.

one day, robots will cry
android!hyojin x reader
word count: ~ 1800 a/n: scifi au that isn't meant to be an mv explainer but still part inspired by an absolute obsession with THE hyojin scene in "popping".
Tumblr media
“I know what you’re doing with him.”
Hyojin’s fingers are cold against your skin as they run against your sides, arms enveloping you from behind. The kitchenette is dim despite the morning hour on the clock. Whatever light makes it through the curtains in the living space side of the room couldn’t make it here. His lips tickle ever so slightly against the shell of your ear as he murmurs, “Good morning.”
Your hands stay busy with preparing the cup of tea on the single square of countertop beside the unit’s narrow oven. “Morning,” you reply customarily.
You know better than to offer him anything by now. It took a while for you to kick the habit of offering something to eat or drink. Hyojin had been patient through the weeks reminding you androids don’t get their sustenance that way; he said he’d take it as a compliment that you so fully mistook him for human. Of course, androids for a long time now have been designed precisely to be indistinguishable from a distance without a detector.
“Did you sleep well?”
You hum an affirmation before nudging, signaling Hyojin to unwind his arms so you could step away from the counter. “You’re okay?”
“Of course,” Hyojin replies, moving to the side so you can head back over to the unmade bed. “Maybe a bit nervous,” he admits by the time you’ve settled back onto the mattress, mug cradled in your hands.
“Why’s that?” As you ask, your gaze is on the way that sunshine tries to reach into the room, on the flecks of dust that float through the air and the floorboard where light switches to shade. His feet come into your vision first. You look up to see him approaching.
“It could be today that the files come in at your office, right?”
The bed dips where he sits beside you. “You’re thinking about that already?” you ask, the rim of your cup just below your lips. Steam drifts up over your lips and brings the aroma to your nose faintly. It’s warmer than any touch of his. By no fault of his own, you add to the thought.
“It’s hard not to.” Hyojin watches you take a sip. You wonder - not for the first time - if he envies humans of the littler things. If he even has time to with his eyes set on the bigger problem. “You don’t know what’ll mean if we can get a hold of it.”
His words are a little too accurate, considering the role you’ve agreed to play in getting them to him. “Could you remind me again? How data from some station habitats is going to help with making things fair for androids down here?”
And he tells you that and more. The good reason he has to believe studies done there have indisputable proof of android sentience that organizations on Earth have been invested in keeping buried. The ways you’ll expose it together, and the world will change for the better.
In your time as a functionary, you’ve never once peeked into the files being transferred between the space stations and the office you worked in. It isn’t part of your job description. You’re just a step in the encryption process; a step intentionally left unautomated to keep the information out of nefarious, non-human hands. It had never occurred to you as an injustice until you met Hyojin.
You bend down to set your now empty mug on the floor. Once you’re upright again, your hands are occupied again quickly. This time with Hyojin’s hands clutching yours. “No one will ever be able to be grateful enough to you,” he professes. “I still can’t believe I found you.” He brings your hands towards his mouth and dots small kisses against your knuckles. His lips travel up, one just above your elbow and one at your shoulder before they finally meet with your own. You don’t need to see scientific evidence to know Hyojin truly has his own mind and heart.
Your back meets the mattress gently, and your arms wrap around his neck as they’ve done so many times before.
“I know he’s sweet with you. Makes it so easy for you to believe him. But you can’t.”
Hyojin walks you to work as he often does. Which is to say, he only ever takes you as far as two blocks away from your office. Once upon a time, you thought it was just the most convenient turning point for him to get to his own job. You know better now.
On most sidewalks, the two of you are afforded the same treatment as any other couple would be. No one really says a thing about it. It’s only in those parts of the city with scanners for bionics that Hyojin ever appears on edge. Otherwise he moves through the streets with a confidence that’s easily enviable.
A squeeze of your hand draws you out of your thoughts. Traffic serves as a good excuse for him to come to pause with you on a street corner.
“I just want to say - it’s okay if you can’t,” Hyojin says softly. The abstraction is intentional. Outside of the apartment, it’s impossible to know what’s safe to say.
“No, if it’s there, I will,” you promise. “I know how much it means.”
His grip tightens again. “Don’t do anything that’ll get yourself in trouble, though.” It’s difficult to believe he could prioritize you over his grander cause, but there his words are. “That’s the last thing I want.”
“I know. I’ll see you later.”
Hyojin smiles at you. His fingers hesitate to untangle with yours when the traffic pauses for crossing. As a substitute for a goodbye kiss, he simply reaches his other hand up to your face and brushes lightly over your jawline. For half an instant, you’re angled as if he really would kiss you on the street corner. You would let him, as indelicate as it would be in this city. But then his touch is gone, and he’s reminding you one more time to be safe before you hurry across the street.
“He makes it all sound so promising, but he isn’t telling you the truth. If you go through with it, you’ll be horrified with yourself. He isn’t looking for data to convince people of androids’ humanity. It doesn’t exist. It’s an excuse.”
You struggle against the hold of the stranger, half wondering if this would be the end. You’ll go missing, or be found in this alley in a few hours time. The accusations against Hyojin shouldn’t have surprised you - he’d told you from the start that he had to keep his presence in the city a secret. But still, you refuse to let it slide. “You don’t know what you’re talking about,” you say with clenched teeth. “Our plan-”
Your words are cut short by an abrupt pull and a push. Your shoulders slam against the rough wall, an arm presses up against your throat. The stranger is in front of you now, pulling their hood down quickly before returning the hand to restraining you.
If not for all the pressure locking you into place, you would mistake it for being in front of a mirror. Shock puts a halt to your attempts to break out of the hold. “It’s his plan. Not ours,” the assailant with your face hisses. “Get that through your head now. We can’t let this be the reality where he actually gets his way.”
You come back to the apartment only slightly later than usual, your shoulders slightly sore but your throat feels fine. The lights in the small studio are off, and there’s a part of you that’s grateful to have gotten here before Hyojin. The other part of you is angry to even have that first thought.
The light buzzes on, flickering for a moment before turning steady. With a sigh, you sit down on the edge of the mattress and pull the small, square drive disc out of your pocket. It feels like you’ve just woken from a nightmare. Heart still racing despite being able to look around and say you’re fine.
You’re fine, you repeat to yourself. You ought to treat the whole ordeal as a bad dream. Odd and confusing but inconsequential. It isn’t so easily done when there’s proof it was real.
Real - but it makes no sense. There’s no other you. Not even an android modeled to your likeness. It’s impossible, but it happened. You sigh shakily and slip the disc back into its place.
Before you can try to clear your head, the lock of the door turns and Hyojin is coming in. He looks the same as when you left him. He smiles when he sees you, but it only lasts for a moment. “What’s wrong?” Hyojin is in front of you in an instant, his hands brushing over your arms and eyes looking you over closely. “What happened?”
You smile weakly, endeared by how easily he can read you and how concerned it makes him. You know Hyojin. If you lied and told him you couldn’t get the files, he would sweep you into his arms and tell you it was fine; that he was just glad you were safe. If you told him the truth - that someone had found out about the plan, and was trying to convince you it’s far more nefarious than you knew… Then he’d be hurt. He’d wonder if you’d really believe a stranger over him. If you really could be so easily convinced that androids weren’t trustworthy. That he wasn't.
“It was nothing,” you try to assuage him. “Just something weird on the way home.” His expression angles into confusion. There’s a flash of a dark misgiving; but then breaks his gaze from yours and looks to your hand as he cradles it.
“Do you want to talk about it?”
You shake your head and hum refusal. “It’s not important.”
“You’re sure?”
“There’s something more important.”
An optimistic curiosity lights up Hyojin’s face. You pull your hand away from his and reach into your pocket.
“Is that…?” Hyojin only starts to ask when his eyes catch the black plastic of the memory card. You nod, and he grins. When you hand him the drive, it feels like a bolt locking into place. There’s no changing your mind now.
“I love you,” Hyojin says as he pockets the card. An instant later, his hands are cupping your face as he leans in to reaffirm the statement with a kiss.
“He’ll keep hopping timelines until he can find a version of me that goes through with it. And not because he loves me- you - us. You understand, don’t you?” The strange reflection - this not-you - struggles for a moment before holding a disc out to you. “Give him this instead. You can put a stop to this for good.”
“I love you, too,” you tell him when his lips leave yours.
You can only hope you won’t regret what you’ve done.

Birthday Surprise | M
ONF- Hyojin
M- suggestive smut
💎 Not Requested.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The living room laid chilly, a simple controversial statement as you stood hot and glistening with sweat in the middle of the large room. Your chest heaved begging for every breath you took to fill your weary lungs. Your eyes blinked back the bright lights that were fixed on your performance, the sheer emptiness of the room coming to life as a slow clapping sounded from infront of you.
“Loved the show but , I have one complaint.” His soft voice made your skin prickle with anticipation. Fear soon crept into your bones as he appeared before you. Coming out from the dark abyss to watch you closely. His eyes sat as two crescent moons going to follow a small smile. His words scared you but his actions spoke otherwise. You stood frozen. Awaiting his dislikes in your performance. A show that you put together last minute for his pleasure.
“You’re not naked.” Hyojin grinned as his eyes scanned your frame , zeroing on your lingerie that clung to your wet body. With a sweet giggle , you realized your mistake. Taking a step forward, meeting his chest in a gentle thud, you let him take you in. Inhaling your perfume and sweat like it was his most favorite aroma.
“Baby, that’s because the birthday boy has to unwrap me.” The scene called for your teasing nature , letting Hyojin raise his hand towards your chin. Lifting it up towards where his lips waited for you.
“You always spoil me princess.”
He smiled, going to slowly kiss you. The romantic moment soon dying after, as his actions grew heated.
His hands wasted no time, untying the bows that kept your most prized possession away from him. Like a mad man, a hungry man, Hyojin made sure you were bare and open for him before he dropped down to his knees in awe. His eyes raked over your body, from your toes , up to the long curls which hung from your head. You were a sight to see , and on his birthday- he wanted nothing more but to have you all to himself.

It’s seldom that humans wander into the swamp. She and her children are accustomed to subsisting on smaller animals, but nothing satisfies the appetite quite like human flesh and blood. There are six - there would have been seven, if her children had not been so eager last night - all young and healthy and tender and so, so afraid. The fear makes everything a little more enjoyable; she likes to play with her food, and humans somehow always taste better when they’ve been thoroughly frightened.
***
Six boys find themselves trapped in a strange swamp - there seems to be no escape, and creatures lurk in the darkness, ready to devour them. Will they make it out alive?

“15 more minutes…”
“You’ve been saying that for the last hour, love.” You pointed out, giving your boyfriend, Hyojin, a worried glance from the bed. You had always been extremely proud of him for somehow managing his university courses, vocal lessons, dance practice, and promotions all at once. You could barely manage just the former. He was definitely an unstoppable force.
Hyojin was sweet— not just to you, but to everyone. Some people didn’t like his nagging, misunderstanding the concern for just an excuse to bother or criticise them. But you cherished it. Every time he reminded you to eat or drink water, to take breaks or to do something better, you could tell just how much he cared for you. He truly just wanted the best for everyone.
Except, there was no Hyojin to nag Hyojin. So you had to do it instead.
“You need to take a break. It’s been hours of straight studying. You deserve it.” You urged him, putting a little more emphasis on some words to get your point across. All you heard in response was a dejected sigh.
“I haven’t been able to focus on this assignment because of practice, and-“ He started, trying his best to persuade you, but you quickly interrupted.
“No and’s. You were busy because of work, not because you were slacking off. You can finish it tomorrow, but it’s past midnight now.” A yawn struck you as you finished your sentence, luckily only pushing your point further. You could see Hyojin start to hesitate.
“If you don’t come here and cuddle me right now, I’ll turn off your computer.” You threatened finally. It wasn’t a tactic that you liked to use, but sometimes it was necessary.
“Do you have snacks?” Hyojin asked softly. You smiled as you watched him save his work and close the computer. Of course your food loving boyfriend would only have one thought in his mind.
“I can be the snack.” You replied, opening your arms wide. He scoffed at you, but still made his way over to melt into the embrace.
“I don’t think this is what people mean when they say to take a snack break.” He mused, brushing his lips over your softly. Each kiss started and ended quickly, and you were both too caught up in the taste of each other’s lips to fully comprehend when each one finished and the next began.
“But it’s still delicious.” Hyojin said finally after pulling away, dipping his head to nuzzle around your collarbone instead.
“What’s delicious?”
“Your lips?” A kiss was pressed to your neck at the end of the response.
You rolled your eyes at the teasing response as your fingers curled around his hair, feeling the dry damage from constant dyeing and bleaching. You still loved it, though. Everything about Hyojin was precious to you. Even his teasing responses that made you roll your eyes, or his constant nagging, or his habit of stealing your food. He was just so sweet in your eyes— especially his lips.

hyojin + dangerous + THAT SCIFI/DYSTOPIAN AU THAT YOU'VE WRITTEN THAT I CANNOT STOP THINKING ABOUT TO THIS DAY!!
title: bargain word count: ~ 780 warnings: dystopian, references to imprisonment a/n: i hope this was the fic you were referencing because that’s the au i went with! let’s not talk about how long i thought about different scenario ideas before coming up with a scene i thought i could write without turning it into a super long fic of its own lmao
one word prompt flash fics; still accepting !
“You don’t have to do it,” Hyojin is the first to remind you, “If you don’t want to.”
You stare down at the table. At the small, circular disk, and its dark, metallic surface that sits in the center on a clear plastic container. It doesn’t look all that impressive. It’s deceptive in that way, perhaps.
“You don’t have to,” Seungjun echoes from the other side of the table, “But it sets us back to square zero on finding access to government level computer, if not.”
“Then that’s what we’ll do,” Hyojin snaps.
The lights in the old storeroom flicker, as though influenced by Hyojin’s quickness to hostile tones. Of course it isn’t. It’s because the power to the room has been jury-rigged. Officially, the grocer expanded his store on the ground level, relocating the  cooler room and storage in the process and leaving an empty, disconnected basement floor. From all the research Jaeyoung has done, this room doesn’t exist on government power maps anymore. Making it the ideal place for conspiring against them.
“You’ve tested it?” you ask, avoiding the temptation to look in Hyojin’s direction as you lift your gaze to Seungjun. “It’ll break apart as soon as it’s in the tech officer’s drink? He won’t detect it?”
Seungjun nods. “Unless he chugs his coffee so fast that they’re still perceptible, which seems unlikely. Or if he scans everything for picotech.”
“Which he could,” Hyojin points out.
“He’s been going to the same place for coffee for years. He trusts her out of habit, or she would’ve been bugged or raided by now.”
“He only has to think there’s a chance something feels off for this to go sideways.”
“We have to take a chance eventually, Hyojin. Or nothing changes. This is the best opportunity we can get.”
Hyojin’s expression darkens. “What chance are you taking? You’re just handing the danger off-!”
“I know you don’t want it to be her,” Seungjun answers, his own scowl drawing dark lines on his face, “But we don’t have better options.”
You reach out and place a hand on the table, right on top of the compacted picotech disk’s container. It’s easy enough to fit in the palm of your hand, simple to lift and curl your fingers around without letting part of the plastic show. Hyojin has already started his cross retort. And you know why, too, just as well as Seungjun. Perhaps better, for all the nights you’ve spent along with Hyojin.
“I’ll do it.”
Both of them look at you. Seungjun with satisfaction, and Hyojin with something far closer to shock.
“I’ll message you through contech after it’s done,” you tell Seungjun, and step back from the table. It’s the easiest possible way you think of to say the conversation is over. The decision made.
The old cooler door is heavy, taking an extra heave of effort for you to pull it open and pass into the dark room of empty shelving. You don’t make it very far before there’s the sound of shoes quickly scuffing against the cement floor and a calling of your name.
You turn around, ready to shake your head and insist. It could easily be an argument. He’s well-intentioned, you’re certain, but not thinking of the bigger picture. He slows his pace, but approaches until he’s toe to toe with you. “I’m not changing my mind, Hyojin.”
“I know.” He surprises you with that. “But you’re doing it-” He holds up a hand when you move to protest, imploring you to let him finish. “-You’re not doing it without a failsafe.”
You look him over, your question evident on your face.
“If you get caught, you blame me. Say I threatened you into it. Hacked your contech.”
“What?” Your expression losens, from skepticism to worry. “I can’t do that to you, Hyojin. You’ve already-”
“That’s why.” He’s serious. Your shoulders slump back, your head shaking in objection. “There’s people dying for proof I shouldn’t have been released. I’d rather face it again then you.”
Of all the things you and Hyojin have discussed, his time imprisoned is one thing he’s never divulged. Your eyes fall down to his neck out of impulse. Your contech flickers on when you glance at the code stamped on his skin, bringing up the familiar message in your sight: KIM HYOJIN. OPEN ARREST RECORD YES / NO ?
You focus your gaze on no and blink.
“I’d never see you again.”
Hyojin reaches out a hand, slow to allow himself to place his fingers along your cheek and jaw until your gaze softens enough. Without fully intending to, you lean into his touch, his palm warm against your skin.
“Then don’t get caught.”

“Princess, please get down from there, you’re going to fall!” At the sound of a familiar knights voice, Princess Hani of Exildia looked down from her perch on the stable roof, a wide grin on her face. Sure enough, her knight Hyojin was standing at the bottom, hands on her hips and an exasperated look on her face, and Hani laughed, waving at her. This was nothing new. Hani always found new places to climb and explore, but no matter where she went, Hyojin would always find her, letting out loud sighs and shaking her head as she tried to make sure the princess was safe. It was kind of like a game, and Hani was winning.
“Awe, don’t be a worrywart, I’m safe. Come up with me, the wind feels great!” As if to prove her point, she threw up her hands and watched as the wind gently caught at her long sleeves. Her knight didn’t seem to be impressed, though, hands staying at her hips as she shook her head.
“Honestly, one day you’re going to fall and hurt yourself and the king and queen are going to have my head for not doing my job. And what are you doing wearing peasant clothes again? And pants on top of that? Did you steal the poor stableman’s clothes?”
“No, silly, I made them myself.” Hani spread her legs and clutched at the roofing, pouting down at the other woman. “And you wear pants, why can’t I wear pants?”
“Because you’re the princess, and I’m just a knight.”
“Yeah, I’m the princess, so I can do whatever I want.”
“I don’t think that’s how that works.” Despite her long suffering sigh, Hyojin smiled slightly, and Hani grinned again, shaking her head so that her unruly and curly hair could fall down around her shoulders.
“Come up and sit beside me. I need protecting up here.”
“Sure you do. If you fall, I’ll end up falling too, and then we’ll both be hurt.”
“Just come up here.”
“Yes, Princess.” Hyojin moved deftly even with a weapon strapped to her hip, strong hands easily gripping at the bricks on the side of the stable as she scaled the wall in seconds. As she pulled herself up onto the roof, Hani held out her hand, making her laugh. “Are you trying to help me?”
“I’m nice sometimes,” Hani said in return, quickly pulling back her hand as Hyojin moved to sit beside her. “See? Isn’t the breeze nice up here?” Hani’s hair blew slightly, and Hyojin looked away, towards the mountains where the breeze always came in from. On the roof, she could just see them peeking over the top of the castle walls, and as the wind tickled her face, she smiled.
“It is nice.”
“I told you.”
Hyojin turned to look back at the princess, shaking her head slightly. “But what would your parents say if they saw you out here?”
With a snort, Hani shrugged, staring back down at the ground. “My mom would tell me to be more ladylike, and my dad would tell me to behave like a princess. But that’s why I like being with you. You like me just a I am. You aren’t like the rest of them.” The wind blew a little bit harder, and Hyojin instinctively reached out to hold onto Hani’s arm, steadying her. At her touch, Hani looked up, staring into the other woman’s eyes, and Hyojin’s heart jumped. “You’re the only one I like, Hyojin.”
“Really?” She was a little breathless, but Hyojin held her composure, giving the princess a smile. “I’m honored, Princess.”
It apparently wasn’t the reply Hani wanted, because she looked away, back at the ground, and Hyojin could finally breathe again. “Yeah. You should be.”
“Your lessons start in an hour,” Hyojin said, changing the subject. “So you should head back inside to get ready.”
“Help me down.” Hani held out her arms, and Hyojin sighed, knowing that she didn’t need any help at all. Still, it was her job, so she stood and turned around.
“Climb onto my back and I’ll carry you down.”
Even after they hit the ground, Hani didn’t let go, holding on tight. Swallowing, Hyojin turned to look at her, wishing her face wasn’t so close. “We’re on the ground.”
“I know.” Hani closed her eyes and pressed her forehead against Hyojin’s shoulder, hair tickling her skin, and Hyojin knew that she couldn’t say no, even if she wanted to. “Just let me stay here for a little bit longer.”
“Okay.”
-
As rowdy as she was, Hani loved when it was time to bathe. The warm water felt like an embrace, and she loved the way the roses smelt when her servant put them into the water. She could close her eyes and relax, imagining that someone who smelt like roses was holding her close. Someone like her own mother, who hadn’t done any such thing since she was a child. But all too soon, the water would become cold, and she would be forced back into her huge, empty room. Even when the fireplace was lit, the room was too cold and too lonely, and she wished to be in the bath again.
Tonight, like so many other nights, she tired of shivering and tossing in her bed and slipped silently out of the blankets and into her slippers, carefully making the bed before picking up the candle beside her bed and walking over to the wall near the window. The faint outline of a door could hardly be seen, but she knew perfectly where to fit her fingers, slipping them behind a loose stone. With a tug, the door swung open with a short scrape, and she quickly moved inside, disappearing into the darkness.
The corridor was cold, and she shivered, holding the candle high until she reached the other door and pushed it open. Warmth rushed in, and a smile came to her lips as she stepped inside, gently closing the door behind her.
“Hyojin.” At her voice, the body in the bed sat up, blinking sleepily as her hand immediately reached for the weapon at her side.
“Princess, are you okay?”
“I’m okay. My room was cold and I couldn’t sleep.”
“Ah.” She pushed the sword back down and pulled the covers back to swing her legs over the side of the bed. “Do you need me to light a fire?” The question was just for show. Hani had done this so many times that Hyojin had to know exactly what she wanted, so the princess didn’t even answer the question, just walking to the bed instead. After setting the candle down on the shelf near the bed, she slipped out of her slippers and into the warm bed, settling down at Hyojin’s side.
“Why is your room always so warm?”
“It’s smaller, so it heats up faster.”
Hani hummed and closed her eyes before moving closer to the other woman, curling into her arms. Slowly, Hyojin wrapped her up in a hug, rubbing her cold skin to warm her. The air was intimate, but Hani seemed satisfied, relaxing against Hyojin’s chest.
“I have a question,” she said, voice uncharacteristically soft. It was only like this that Hyojin saw this side of her, sleepy and soft and nothing like the brash girl she knew in the mornings.
“I might have an answer,” she said, pushing the other woman’s hair behind her ears.
“Why did my parents make you my guard even though you aren’t a man like most knights?” Hani’s eyes were still closed, but the question sounded sincere, and Hyojin thought for a moment, trying to find the best answer.
“Well, I am just as strong as the male knights. And since I’m a woman like you, I can go everywhere with you without worry of indecent things happening.”
“Indecent things? Like loving you? I heard that the daughter of a nobleman recently fell in love with her servant and they ran off together. Is it like that?”
Hyojin swallowed, looking down at Hani’s soft features and her innocent, now wide eyes. The princess was still innocent and sheltered, and she felt almost bad for bringing it up. “Yes, something like that.”
“Oh.” Hani closed her eyes again and Hyojin let out the breath she’d been holding, gently running her fingers through the girl’s hair. Was it really okay to hold her like this? Did Hani even know what sneaking into another person’s quarters could mean? “I don’t think it worked.”
Blinking, Hyojin stalled. “You don’t think what worked?”
“Them giving me a girl so I wouldn’t fall in love. Because I love you.” For a moment, Hani’s words made her heart jump, before she took a deep breath and remembered that Hani hardly knew anything of the world. Hyojin didn’t know if Hani even know what the word “love” meant. But she smiled, determined not to hurt the girl in her care.
“That’s nice. Now, you should go to sleep. You have an early morning to look forward to.” Hani hummed against her chest, apparently taking her advice, and Hyojin lay awake, wondering what she should do. Eventually, after Hani’s breathing had evened and her grip loosened, Hyojin slipped out of bed and collected her slippers before picking her up. The princess was light in her arms, sleeping face tranquil and cute, and she had the urge to kiss her, but she shook the urge away and quickly tucked her back into her own huge bed. As she turned to leave, the chill in the room made her shiver, and she glanced back at the princess, worried she’d wake.
But she didn’t stir, so she quietly slipped away, back to her own room before she could give in to any of the voices in her head, insisting that she loved Hani too.
-
“My parents are marrying me off.” Hani’s words made Hyojin stop in her tracks, sword mid-strike at the bale of hay she’d been using for practice. Slowly, she turned around to look back at the princess, who sat behind her on a stone, once again wearing pants with her hair wild and untamed, falling around her shoulders. However, her normally playful expression was missing, and Hyojin slowly let her arm fall to her side, searching for the words to say. She’d noticed that Hani was down, but she hadn’t thought it would be this.
“Do you know who to?” She tried to keep her voice even as she put down her sword and reached for her knife, testing its weight in her hands.
“I believe he’s the son of some nobleman. I haven’t been told much about it other than that I’m to be married.” There was something unreadable in Hani’s expression as she kicks at the ground, feet bare, exposed, and dirty. “I don’t want to.”
“You are at that age,” Hyojin said, because that was what she was supposed to say. Still, there was a pang in her chest that she didn’t want to think about as she turned towards the target attached to a tree a few yards off. Deftly, she pulled her arm back and aimed before letting the knife fly. The knife landed with a loud sound, burying itself into the middle of the wood, and Hyojin’s shoulder hurt with the force of it. She didn’t know why she was so mad: this was bound to happen eventually. Hani was a princess, and princesses were married off to whoever their father thought would benefit him the most. That didn’t make it hurt worse, though, and when she turned back to look at Hani, rolling her shoulder, she could see the hurt written on her features too.
“But why should I marry someone I don’t even know? What if I hate him?” Hani shook her head slowly, looking down at the ground. “I need you to be on my side, Hyojin.”
“I’m always on your side, Princess.”
“Then why do you echo the same words as my parents?” Hani had a point, and Hyojin bit her lip, battling within herself as she picked up her sword again.
“Because things aren’t that easy. If you were to tell the king and queen that I said something to contradict them, they might have my head.”
“I would never tell them. I never tell them anything.” Hani stood to her feet and reached for one of the many knives Hyojin had laid out for practice earlier, and Hyojin had to restrain herself from worrying as she picked it up. “I don’t tell them that you let me climb on things or dress like a peasant boy or that you sometimes teach me how to defend myself. I don’t tell them that you let me sleep with you when I’m cold and lonely.” As Hani turned towards the target, Hyojin quickly stepped to the side to be out of her way, watching with a careful yet worried eye as Hani barely aimed before throwing the knife.
It landed at the top of the target, and Hani huffed in annoyance. “How many times do I have to tell you that you’re better if you keep the knife in your hands?” Hyojin said, mostly trying to change the subject. “I taught you to keep the knife close, remember?”
“I remember.” Hani sat back down on her rock with a sigh, cupping her face in her hands. “Please, Hyojin, can you tell me what you really think? About me getting married?”
Those words were dangerous, and Hyojin knew it as she stepped forward to cut down the hay once again, more erratic than before. She thought a lot of things about Hani getting married, but most of them could never leave her lips. With a sigh of her own, she lowered her weapon once again and set her shoulders. “Well, I’ll be sad to see you go. I’ll miss you a lot. And I don’t believe in arranged marriages. But I also know that it would pointless to argue against your parents. They know what they’re doing.” For a moment, the air was silent, and Hyojin thought that Hani might drop it. But as the older girl walked back to begin putting away her things, Hani reached out and caught her hand.
“What if I want to marry you instead?” She sounded completely serious, and Hyojin could feel her face begin to heat up, her heart beating hard in her chest. For a second, she allowed herself to imagine that: imagine marrying the princess she’d loved so long, imagine kissing and touching her, imagine waking up to her every morning. Then she shook her head and forced out a laugh.
“I’m sorry, Hani. You can’t.”
The younger woman’s face fell, but she didn’t let go of Hyojin’s hand, instead tugging her closer. “Is that just because my parents wouldn’t allow it? Or because you don’t want to marry me?” Her eyes were big, and Hyojin swallowed, knowing she couldn’t lie to her.
“Your parents would never allow it.”
“Do you love me too?”
The air suddenly seemed heavy, and the hairs on the back of Hyojin’s neck stood up. She was aware that someone could very well be watching them, or hearing them, and the consequences of that would be dire. She wasn’t safe, but neither was the princess, and as much as she wanted to wrap the other woman up in her arms and love her forever, she knew she couldn’t. So instead, she tugged her arm away and broke eye contact, looking back at her weapons.
“I do,” she said, keeping her voice soft. “But I can’t. We can’t do this. I’m sorry, Princess.” It hurt too much to look back at Hani, so she didn’t, plastering a smile on her face as she packed up instead as she prayed that Hani wouldn’t come to hate her. “Come, you have lessons to get ready for.”
-
Hyojin dreaded the day of the wedding, possibly even more than Hani did. Every day it crept closer, she battled away the complex feelings in her chest, knowing that she could do nothing but watch as the castle prepared and Hani cried on her shoulder because the man she was betrothed to scared her. Every day felt like hell, and Hyojin couldn’t help losing sleep as she practiced her life away, trying to become stronger and stronger, even if she knew there was nothing she could do. Maybe, in the back of her head, she thought once or twice of fighting the nobleman and running away with Hani. But that would be suicide, as the king and queen would not rest until Hani was brought back and Hyojin was executed for treason. So Hyojin sat back and bit her tongue, baring the unbearable and hoping that Hani would be okay.
The day of the wedding was warm and sunny, and as Hyojin stepped into the castle, dressed in her best armor for the occasion, she heard one of the maids say that the gods had blessed the marriage with good weather. Under her breath, Hyojin scoffed, clutching onto her sword tighter and marching past the two ladies towards Hani’s room for the final time. Inside, Hani was dressed in the castle’s finest, white gown flowing to the ground and face covered by a carefully-crafted veil of the finest material the world could offer. Her shoulders were rigid, and although Hyojin couldn’t see her face, she knew the princess was uncomfortable with the transformation. The gown was a far cry from her normal pants, and her feet trembled inside unfamiliar heeled boots as she clasped her hands in front of her, clutching so tightly her knuckles were white.
“It seems like I’m escorting you to the ceremony, Princess,” she said, only speaking up once the servants had scurried out of the room and left the two of them alone. At the sound of her voice, Hani looked up and gently lifted up her veil to peer out at Hyojin, eyes wide. She looked pretty, yet anxious and worried, and the thought of someone else taking off that veil made Hyojin feel sick.
“Hyojin.” Hani let out a breath, and her shoulders slumped slightly. “I can’t believe today is the day.” All around the castle, Hyojin had heard the servants saying the same thing, but hearing it from the other woman’s mouth made it sound like a terrible thing.
“I can hardly believe it myself.”
“I don’t want to get married.” Hani’s voice was uncharacteristically small, and Hyojin cleared the room in a few steps to stand in front of her, reaching down to take her hand.
“I know, and I’m sorry.”
“Can you hug me? One more time?” The armor she had on was uncomfortable, but Hani was earnest as she stood from her chair, so Hyojin gave in, opening up her arms. Hani was small in her arms, even with her giant dress, and for the first time in her life, Hyojin felt like crying. She didn’t, though, staying strong for Hani’s sake as she pulled away to give her a smile.
“Don’t worry. I’ll always be there to protect you. It’ll be okay.” She wasn’t sure how true her words would be. Although she was supposed to travel with Hani, whether or not the nobleman would accept her as a new knight was still a question, and he could easily say he didn’t want her. Still, she couldn’t bring herself to let Hani know that. Not when she was already so scared.
“Really? Do you promise?”
“I promise,” Hyojin said, bringing up the other woman’s hand to press a gentle kiss to her skin, even as the knowledge that she might be lying burnt her throat. “Now. Should we get going, Princess?”
The ceremony was to take place in the gardens, bright and blooming with life just as the king and queen hoped their daughter’s marriage would be. With bated breath and hidden feelings, Hyojin lead the princess down the stairs, holding onto her tight until the doors appeared and she knew she had to let go. On the other side of those doors, the king would be waiting to take her to her new husband. Reluctantly, Hyojin let go of Hani’s arm and opened up the door.
She should have never let go.
At first, everything seemed wonderful. The king took his daughter’s hand and Hyojin returned to her place as a knight, over by the gates to wait and watch. The crowd was large and unfamiliar, but at that point, Hyojin didn’t think that there might be someone in that crowd who might want to cause harm, instead thinking about how she knew Hani was crying under the veil, shoulders shaking in silence as she clutched her father’s hand.
Then, just as Hani reached the end of the aisle, four unfamiliar men in hoods stood up and rushed forward, yelling something unintelligible. Immediately, Hyojin drew her sword and rushed forward with the rest of the knights, but the sound of horses hooves behind them made her turn. There, thundering towards her and the rest of the knights were multiple horsemen in full armor, somehow undetected before as they moved in quickly, plowing over every knight that couldn’t jump out of the way quick enough. Hyojin scrambled to move out of the way and brandished her weapon, swinging at one of the horsemen as he passed. Her sword made contact, but the horse kicked and sent her flying back towards a tree, breath knocked out of her and eyes blurry.
A scream jerked her back to her senses and she looked up to see Hani being hauled onto one of the horses. Kick as she may, the man held her tight, spurring his horse on faster. The king lay on the ground, wounded by one of the horses, while the nobleman and guests dove for cover, desperately trying to figure out what was going on. Jumping to her feet, Hyojin spotted a riderless horse, his rider knocked down by one of the archers on the gates. With no time to reconsider, she ran for it, pulling herself into the saddle and yanking the reins to urge it on, headed for the gates. If she could just reach them before the other riders did....
Just as she rounded the corner of the castle, trashed gates in sight, she saw the riders passing through them. One of them still had a grip on Hani, and Hyojin felt her blood boil as she headed after them, digging her iron-clad heels into the stirrups. She’d promised Hani she would protect her, and she’d be damned if she let these men get away.
-
Hyojin didn’t really have a plan. She was one knight against multiple horsemen, and she had no idea where they were going after they had escaped her the first time. Still, after a while of trying to scout around and wondering what she should do, she decided to let the horse decide. After she climbed back in the saddle, she let the reins go lax and urged it forward with her heels, clicking her tongue. Thankfully, he began to move quickly, like he knew where he was going, and she brought her hand to the hilt of her sword. Hopefully, he’d take her to wherever the thugs were hiding out with Hani, or at least, somewhere close. It wasn’t the best plan, but there was nothing else she could do, especially not when half of the day was already gone. She was going to get Hani back, even if it was the last thing she did.
The sun was beginning to go down when the horse finally split from the road and headed down a hidden and unfamiliar trail. Sensing danger, Hyojin stopped him to dismount before letting him go again. He walked at an easy canter, apparently feeling safe, and Hyojin took the time to learn her surroundings. They were heading into the thick woods, and although she couldn’t say that she was surprised, she also couldn’t be excited, either. She was a knight, not a scout or anything of the sort. She wasn’t used to the woods, and it would make fighting a lot harder for her. If she could just sneak up on them somehow, or take them one-on-one-.
A loud yell came from her right and she hit the ground, listening closely. It sounded like Hani, and her heartbeat picked up as she crept closer towards the sound, squinting into the dim-lit woods. She was sure that she could see light from a fire not too far off, but was it?
“Ow! She bit me! The lass bit me! Fuck, I think she drew blood!”
“That’s what you get for tying me to a tree and then trying to touch my face.” Yep, that was Hani alright. Despite the situation, Hyojin could feel herself smile a bit. This princess wasn’t going to go easily, and that knowledge but her a little bit more at ease as she crept closer, until she could just see the outlines of the camp.
“Could you just shut up and behave? I was going to try and bribe the king and queen for your release, but now I’m just tempted to kill you instead.”
“Go ahead. Kill me, and my knight will hunt you all to the end of the earth!”
“Your knight, huh?” There were only two men in the camp now, and Hyojin watched as one scoffed and sat down beside the fire, nursing his hand. “You were being married to some noble, but you were courtin’ your knight on the side?”
“We weren’t courting, but she would still never let you hurt me.”
“Oh, a female knight?” The other man laughed, harsh and low. “I don’t think I’m scared of a little girl playing dress-up.”
“You should be. Just wait until she gets here.”
“Listen here, lass,” the last man, who seemed to be the leader, said. “Nobody is going to find us. Not out here. You might as well shut up and sit pretty, you understand?”
“I’ll never shut up.”
“I have ways of making you shut up, you-.” The man lifted his hand, but he never got the chance to do anything else. Hyojin’s knife found it’s home in his back, and he gurgled, stepping back a few times before collapsing. The other man, who had been gazing into the fire, jumped up when he fell, looking around with eyes wide as he pulled out his sword.
“What the fuck? Who’s out there! Show yourself!” Sneaking up wasn’t necessarily the most noble thing to do, but Hyojin didn’t know who else might be out there and she didn’t want him to alert them, so she quickly stepped out of the woods behind him and brandished her sword. The sight wasn’t pretty, and as he fell face-first into the fire, a well-placed slice through his neck, Hyojin wrinkled her nose and hoped that Hani hadn’t seen it.
Thankfully, when she turned to look at the other girl, her eyes were shut tight, face scared. “It’s just me,” Hyojin said softly as she walked up, yanking her knife from the leader’s back and quickly cleaning it before Hani could see. At the sound of her voice, Hani opened her eyes again, and a smile spread across her face.
“I knew you would come for me.”
“Hurry, we have no time. Do you know how many of them there were?” Hyojin spoke as she cut the ropes from around Hani’s wrists, and Hani winced as she rubbed her sore skin, thinking.
“Well, there were two men at the house up ahead, and four who brought me here. I don’t know how many more there might be.”
“So at least six. Here, take this knife. You might have to fight too.”
“There’s no way I can fight in my dress.” That was true. Even when Hani stood up, the dress dragged the floor. After a moment of decision, Hyojin sliced the fabric at her knees, watching as the bundles of tarnished white fell to the ground. Hani seemed happy to be free, snatching the veil from her head as she stepped out of the dress. It seemed she’d already lost her boots, and Hyojin stifled a laugh as Hani wiggled her toes against the mud. “That’s so much better. Thank you.”
“Come on, let’s get going. We can’t be here when they return.” Hyojin reached out, grabbing Hani’s hand out of reflex. Her hand was warm, and for a moment, the knight wondered if it was okay, only for Hani to hold on tight, reassuring her. “Which way was the house?”
“That way. North, I think.”
“Then we won’t head that way. I think heading west is our best option.” It was dark out, now, and Hyojin picked up a discarded torch, lighting it from the fire. She went to head for the woods, but Hani stopped her, quickly grabbing the two men’s bags and slinging them over her shoulder.
“There might be something valuable, like food,” she explained, and Hyojin nodded, quickly taking her hand once again.
“Good thinking. Now let’s get out of here.”
The trees were so dense that hardly any moonlight shone through, and Hyojin had to hold the torch close for fear that it might catch the forest on fire. She didn’t know where she was going, or what might be in the woods, but she did know that she didn’t want to be back at that campsite. So she continued to walk, holding Hani’s hand in the dark silence, leading her in a direction she didn’t know. At least they were heading west, which meant they would be harder to find, by anyone. The thugs would have expected them to head east back to the castle, so Hyojin figured they had a pretty good lead on them. She also knew that there was a small abandoned village to the west of the castle, near to the westernmost border. If she was lucky, they’d find the village empty and would be able to catch some sleep before the morning came.
“Hyojin?” Hani’s voice made her jump a bit, even as soft as it was.
“Yes?”
“Where are we going?”
“I’m not sure myself. But there should be an old Othaya village near here. I’m hoping to find that.”
“Othaya? Isn’t that the kingdom next to ours?” Hani moved closer, her shoulder brushing against Hyojin’s, and it was only then that the knight noticed that the other woman was shivering. She held the dying torch closer, hoping that it could at least provide a bit of warmth.
“That’s right. The village was abandoned when Exildia extended it’s westward borders, before we signed the peace treaty. We were too young to remember the battle, but I visited once with my father during training.”
“Will there still be buildings? If it’s been abandoned since then....”
“The last time I was there, there were still plenty of buildings left. The Othayans build everything with stones, so their homes last for decades with little to do damage.” As she spoke, Hyojin let her eyes roam. She’d gotten used to the darkness now, and as they walked, she’d noticed a change in the trees. There were more sweeping willows here, their branches touching the ground at her feet, which meant they had managed to get quite far, even on foot. The village shouldn’t be much further.
“My feet hurt,” Hani said, and Hyojin swallowed, remembering that the princess didn’t have shoes. They would have to stop soon, village or not.
“Get on my back, I’ll carry you,” she replied, stopping and letting go of Hani’s hand.
“Is that safe? What if someone finds us? Will you be able to fight?”
“Just be ready to jump off and we should be fine.” After a moment of deliberation, Hani climbed onto her back and wrapped her arms tight around Hyojin’s shoulders. As soon as she felt like Hani was safe, she began walking again, taking longer strides now that she didn’t have to worry about Hani keeping up. Her training to march endless miles was finally coming in handy, and she focused on the woods around her once again. They couldn’t be far, now. She would just have to search until she found it.
Hani was asleep on her back when the trees finally broke from their crowded clusters some time later to reveal the remains of the village in a clearing ahead. Despite the want to run ahead and find shelter from the chill in the air, Hyojin stopped and surveyed the scene in front of her. Although the village should be safe, any sort of people could be hiding or squatting there, and she couldn’t risk just running in.
“Hani, wake up.” The woman on her back stirred at her words, and Hyojin moved towards a willow with exposed roots, providing the perfect hiding spot. “I found the village. Stay here while I stake it out.”
“Okay.” Hani’s voice was sleepy as she climbed down and sat between the roots clutching at her legs and the bags, still shivering. After making sure that Hani was well-hidden, Hyojin went ahead carefully. She wasn’t trained for stealth operations, but she tried to best to be quiet as she approached the large main house. It loomed in the dark, tattered and worn, but standing tall despite the toll of the weather. When she opened the door, it creaked loudly, making her wince. Thankfully, though, the inside of the house was still, with no sign of any recent attention. A pile of hay was near the fireplace, where someone had slept at some point, but it was stale and old, and Hyojin knew that this meant the coast was clear.
Still, just to be safe, she checked the rest of the house, entering every room. Dust hung in the air, and she coughed slightly, but other than some mice that scurried out of the house as soon as she entered, she was the only living thing that had been in the house for a long time. After checking that the fireplace was still usable and gathering some tinder for a fire at the back of the house, she made her way back outside for Hani.
“It’s safe. Once we get inside, I’ll start a fire. They have some blankets in one of the rooms as well that I can clean for you.”
Hani was so tired that she just nodded, letting Hyojin help her up and lead her inside. Once inside, Hani checked the pile of hay for insects before collapsing down and closing her eyes, obviously exhausted. Quickly, Hyojin pushed the tinder together in the fireplace and pressed the last of the torch against it, sighing in relief when the fire jumped back to life, growing larger with the new material to burn. The fire warmed the space quickly, and Hyojin walked back to the door to bolt it before heading into one of the rooms where she’d seen blankets. They were old and worn, with holes through the once beautiful fabric and dust covering their edges, but a couple shakes cleared the dust and Hyojin held it up against the smoke of the fire to drive out any bugs. After making sure they were as clean as she could get them in this situation, she gently wrapped Hani up in them, smiling when she curled up a little more in her makeshift bed.
As Hyojin turned away, a hand grabbed her arm, and she looked down to see Hani looking up at her with tired eyes. “You aren’t leaving me, right?”
“Of course I’m not. I was just going to sleep near the fireplace.”
“Sleep with me.”
Hyojin’s face colored at the implications, but she knew Hani didn’t mean it like that. Swallowing, she glanced at the fireplace, then took her weapons and laid them on the floor. “I’m not sure there’s enough room.”
“I’ll make room. I just want you near me,” Hani said, gripping tightly at Hyojin’s hand, and the knight knew she couldn’t say no.
“Just let me put away my armor.” After the cold metal was gently laid out on the floor, Hyojin climbed onto the small pile of hay, laying beside Hani, who turned to look at her so that there would be more room. Despite the hay being uncomfortable, Hyojin was reminded of the many days Hani would sneak into her room for warmth, and tangled feelings climbed their way into her throat, making her heart beat hard. Hani, blissfully unaware of Hyojin’s inner turmoil, closed her eyes and wrapped her arms around her, curling in close. Out of instinct, Hyojin held her tight in return, hand coming up to tangle in the other woman’s hair. For a moment, she thought Hani might already be asleep, but then the princess shifted beside her and let out a sigh.
“Hyojin, I love you.”
Those feelings rose up again, and out here, it felt like it was safe to bare them to the world. So Hyojin closed her eyes and pressed her forehead against the top of Hani’s head, breathing in her scent. “I love you too, Hani.” The tension in the other woman’s shoulders loosened, and soon, her breathing was even, signalling that she was asleep.
Even though Hyojin’s eyes were closed, she struggled to sleep, thoughts whirling through her mind as she listened closely for any sound. Eventually, she did fall asleep, and dreamed of Hani smiling at her in her wedding dress, telling her that she loved her.
-
The morning came too soon, and Hyojin awoke with a jolt, totally awake as she listened for any movement. She hadn’t intended to fall asleep, and she felt a little guilty, but thankfully, nothing seemed amiss. Hani was still asleep in her arms, and the fire had died down overnight, now just a glowing ember. Sunlight slipped in through cracks in the roof and through the windows, and Hyojin took a deep breath, calming herself down. Beside her, Hani stirred, and she turned to look at her, watching as the sunlight drifted over her face.
“Good morning,” the princess said softly, her eyes fluttering open, and Hyojin’s heart jumped in her chest. She’d wanted to kiss the other woman so many times before, but now the urge burned in her chest. Was this what it was like to wake up to the person you loved every morning?
“Good morning,” she said, hoping her voice didn’t waver too much. “Sleep well?”
“Yes, because you finally told me that you loved me too.”
“Didn’t I tell you that before?”
“You did, but then you apologized for loving me and said you couldn’t. Last night, you just said you loved me.” Her hair was wild and all over the place, just like Hyojin was used to it being, and she smiled softly as she sat up, affectionately tucking it behind her ears.
“I guess that’s true.”
“You meant it, right?” Hani sat up, eyes wide as she grabbed Hyojin’s hand. “You weren’t just saying that, right?”
Something about the woods made it easier to tell the truth, so Hyojin nodded her head when she normally would have made an excuse. “I meant it. I love you, Hani.” The other woman bloomed into a smile.
“Then you won’t take me back to the castle, right?”
“I-.” Hyojin bit her lip, not knowing what to say. “That’s a tall order. Where else would we go?”
“We can run away together. If you take me back to the castle, I’ll have to get married. But if you don’t, we can marry each other. We can stay here!”
“We can’t stay here,” Hyojin said, shaking her head. “This place is regularly used by the royal army for war training.” Hani’s face fell, and she clutched at Hyojin’s hands.
“Then you’re really going to take me back?” Hani seemed on the verge of tears, and Hyojin swallowed, knowing that she couldn’t do that. She couldn’t experience all of this, only to give Hani up again.
“No. We’ll escape to Othaya. But it’s not going to be easy. You’re still wearing your destroyed wedding dress, and I’m in my royal armor. I know a place where we can cross over without being checked, but we’ll have to buy clothes, not to mention we’ll need money, and all of my things are back at the castle.”
“Wait.” Hani turned and pointed near the fireplace. When Hyojin followed her gaze, she saw the bags that Hani had grabbed from the thugs before they left. “We never checked the bags. They probably had money on them, right?” Quickly, Hyojin moved from her spot and walked over to the bags, with Hani on her heels. In one was food and a canteen, and she handed a piece of bread to Hani as she continued to look through it. In one of the pockets, she found gold pieces and quickly pulled them out, breathing a sigh of relief. The other bag contained a hat, shoes, a journal of some sort, a knife, and more money. Much more money.
“Whatever those thugs were doing, they were making money,” Hyojin said, raising her eyebrows as she ran her fingers through the coins. “With this, we should be able to make a start for ourselves.” She turned to look at the other woman, who beamed and threw her arms around her shoulders.
“That makes me so happy!” Her face was so close, and Hyojin swallowed, eyes moving down to her lips. Before, it had been wrong to even think, but now....
“Princess, can I kiss you?” Her question took the princess by surprise, and her face colored, mouth dropping slightly open. Hyojin had never seen her like this, cute and flustered, and it made her smile, reaching up to caress her face as Hani leaned in.
“Yes, please.” Hani’s lips were soft, even after travelling all night with hardly any water. Even though Hyojin had imagined this moment for ages, nothing could compare to actually kissing Hani. Although her movements were slow and unsure, everything about her was soft and warm, and Hyojin didn’t mind taking it slow, learning alongside her as she tangled her fingers into her hair. When she finally pulled away, Hani was breathless, cheeks painted red and lips even redder, eyes wide.
As her heart tried to beat its way out of her chest, Hyojin reached under her shirt and pulled out the ring she always held on the chain around her neck. Gently, she took it off as Hani watched, slipping the ring from the chain. “This was my mother’s wedding ring. I’m giving it to you. This might not be the wedding you imagined, and I promise I’ll give you a proper wedding once we’re safe and settled in Othaya. But I want you to have this, as proof of my love.” Tears welled up in Hani’s eyes, and she held out her hand, letting Hyojin slide the ring onto her finger and smiling before she dove back in to kiss her again.
As much as Hyojin wanted to sit there and kiss Hani forever, she knew that they had to get going. Gently, she pulled away and pressed a final kiss to Hani’s forehead. “Let’s get ready to go. Finish breakfast and Ill get us some water. There’s a well outside.” Hani nodded, smiling widely as she watched Hyojin get to her feet. Hyojin’s heart skipped a beat, and she found herself smiling too, elated. Was this really happening?
Half of her expected to wake up from a dream, or for something bad to happen. But no, when she came back to the house with water, Hani was still there with her hair now tied back into a ponytail, bags packed and ready to go. She had the shoes from the bag on, and although they were much too big, it was a relief to know that she didn’t have to go barefoot anymore.
Once they’d both drank from the water and filled the canteen, Hyojin put back on her armor and they were off, walking once again towards the western border, no sign of them left in the house and the castle far behind them. Hani’s dress was tattered, and her shoes were too big, and the ring was hardly anything special, but she glowed in the sun, hand holding tight to Hyojin’s, and Hyojin knew that she wouldn’t change this for the world. There was no going back now, and she didn’t want to. So she turned her sights to the west, held Hani’s hand tight, and never once looked behind her.
-
Despite Hyojin’s worries, Othaya was easy to get into. Once they were over the border and Hyojin had slipped out of her armor and headed into the next town to buy some clothes, a horse, and a moving cart, they had easily blended in. Princess Hani was no longer a princess, she was just Ahn Hani, an “orphan” who just happened to be skilled with a needle and pen. And Hyojin was just Hyojin, no longer a royal knight but a traveling swordsman with no home. And it felt better that way.
After staying for a short while in a small village where Hyojin worked as a bartender at the pub for a room and Hani worked with a local tailor, they settled down in a bustling village with enough money to keep them on their feet, buying a small cabin on the outskirts near the woods. Though small, the cabin was cute and warm, with flowers, fruits, and vegetables blooming in the gardens and flowered ivies climbing the walls. Everything inside was cozy and personal, and tucked into a back room was a trunk, where Hani’s torn wedding dress and Hyojin’s old royal armor was stored away from any prying eyes. The front of the house functioned as Hani’s parlor, where customers seeking her expert tailoring and sewing would come calling. People just seemed to accept her as an eccentric seamstress who wore pants sometimes and spoke and read just a little better than everyone else, and business was good. Hyojin put her skills with a knife to use as a butcher in town, her well-toned muscles and tall figure making it easy for people to accept her as man. She never said she was, per-se, but it was easier for people to assume that anyway, so she went with it.
It was only when she came home from work one night and saw Hani working on a wedding dress that she realized that she’d never given Hani the wedding she’d promised. Hani still wore the ring, but they’d never had an official ceremony. And although Hani hadn’t said anything, it bothered Hyojin that she’d forgotten. So she brewed some tea and brought Hani over a cup, placing it gently on the table in front of her as the other woman put away the fancy garment to smile at her.
“How was work today?”
“It went well, the shop was busy as always. Our new dried meats are very popular these days.” As Hyojin blew on her tea to cool it, she glanced at the wedding dress. “It looks like you’ve had your hands full as well.”
With a laugh, Hani nodded her head, patting the garment. “I have, but it’s for a woman who has been coming to me since we started, so I’m working hard on it. Business is good these days.” The younger woman pulled her legs up onto the chair, and Hyojin noticed with a smile that she was wearing the pants that she’d bought her when they first moved to Othaya.
“Is this the only wedding dress you’re working on?” She asked, and Hani shot her a look, tilting her head slightly.
“Well, yes. I think so. Why?”
“Maybe you should start making another one.” Hyojin wasn’t the best with words, and her face colored slightly as she sipped her drink to calm herself down. A slow smile was making its way onto Hani’s face, and she raised her eyebrows, leaning forward and making the flickering lamp on the table sway slightly.
“What are you trying to say, Hyojin?”
“I’m trying to say that you should make your own wedding dress. Because I’m going to give you the wedding I promised.” At her words, Hani stood from her chair and squealed, moving around to plop herself down in Hyojin’s lap and throw her arms around the other woman’s shoulders.
“Do you mean it?”
“Of course I do. I’m sorry I took so long.”
“Don’t apologize, we’ve been busy. As long as I have this ring, I know that you love me.” Hani giggled and pressed her forehead against Hyojin’s. “I do have to say, though. I’m happy to finally marry you.” The light flickered again, and the smell of tea and flowers drifted through the room as Hyojin leaned up to kiss her bride, pulling her in close. Even with the windows open, the house was warm. It was home. And it was everything they could have ever wished for.
-
The venue was perfect. Technically, Hyojin had stumbled upon it completely on accident while hunting in the woods for work, but she liked to think that it had drawn her there. It was a small clearing in the woods where a stream ran through, surrounded by daisies and honeysuckle. There was a path, though slightly overgrown, leading through the flowers and up to an abandoned wind pump near the water’s edge. The air seemed almost magical, teeming with life and smells as Hyojin stood staring at the gorgeous sight in front of her. In order to find her way back, she pulled stones from her pouch and began to drop them on her way to the end of the forest near the cabin. Then, she followed them back, until she could recognize marks in the woods and made marks herself, familiarizing herself with the path until she knew she’d be able to lead the wedding party to it.
The day of the wedding, it was sunny out, with birds chirping in the trees as the party made their way through the woods. Hyojin was wearing her armor, polished until it shone with no resemblance to Exildia left behind, and it felt weird to once again tramp through the woods in full armor. Beside her, Hani held her hand, dressed in a plain yet gorgeous white gown that ended just above her ankles, but hid the pants underneath. A crown of flowers sat atop her head, and on her feet were her most comfortable shoes, contrasting slightly with the pure white of her dress.
“Just in case,” Hani had said with a laugh when she showed her shoes to Hyojin. “I never want to go on a life changing journey barefoot again.”
The wedding party was small, extremely so compared to the one Hani had before. But it was made up of people they loved: the woman who’d been buying from Hani since day one, Hyojin’s business partner, their lovely neighbors, a couple who’d helped them move in, the town friar who loved to visit and chat. They were true friends, and the air felt light and exciting as they headed deeper into the woods on a well-marked trail.
Once they reached the clearing, Hyojin stepped aside to let everyone see. Hani’s gasp of wonder and the tears that gathered in her eyes were more than Hyojin could have asked for, and she squeezed her bride’s hand as she watched her take in the scenery.
“Oh, Hyojin. It’s so beautiful. How did you find such a perfect place?”
“Anything for you, my love,” Hyojin said softly, and Hani sniffled, quickly wiping at her eyes.
“Don’t make me cry before the ceremony even begins,” she replied, but she giggled and Hyojin knew she was happy.
“Shall we begin the ceremony?” The friar asked from behind them, and the two women nodded. He led the way up to the wind pump and stood waiting as Hani and Hyojin followed him up, smiling thankfully as their friends clapped. “On this wonderful day, we are here to celebrate the union of Ahn Hani and Ahn Hyojin. If anyone here opposes the marriage, speak now or forever hold your peace.”
As he spoke, Hyojin mostly tuned him out, busy trying to remember everything she’d wanted to say. Hani was stunning in front of her, holding her hands while framed by the shining sun and an array of flowers. Birds sang in the air, and the sound of the river lapping at the rocks and splashing near the wind pump calmed her nerves, making her focus instead on the happy feeling in her chest as Hani beamed at her. She loved Hani. Loved her more than words could even comprehend. But as the friar turned to her, she knew she had to attempt to put her feelings into words, so she cleared her throat and tightened her grip ever so slightly on Hani’s familiar hands.
“Hani, I’ve known you for a long time. We grew up together, learned together, laughed together, shared our hardships with each other. At some point, my feelings for you turned into love, and I realized that I couldn’t live without you. On that day I almost lost you, I felt so hollow and hopeless that I didn’t know what to do: I had come to realize that I didn’t know how to function without you there at my side. I needed to love you, needed to protect you and keep you warm. Without you, my life had no purpose. Finally, I stopped denying my feelings for you, and I’m so glad I did. When I finally told you I loved you the next day, it felt like a weight had been lifted off my shoulders. It felt so right and I knew as soon as you smiled at me that I could never let you go again. Then, I promised to marry you and protect you forever. By marrying you now, I’m proving to you that I’ll always keep my promises, and so I want to make some more. I promise that I’ll always love you, and always support you, as long as I’m alive. I promise that I’ll help you whenever you need me. I promise to always keep you warm and healthy. I promise to always let you know just how much you mean to me. And I promise to never let you go again. I’m yours, I always have been and always will be. You mean the world to me, and for you, my love, I’d do anything.”
Hyojin felt a bit winded after speaking, her heart thumping hard in her chest, but the tears welling up in Hani’s eyes and spilling over made it all worth it, and she smiling, letting go of one of her hands to wipe away her tears.
“I love you,” Hani said, choked up as she clutched at Hyojin’s other hand.
“Those are good tears this time, right?”
“Yes, they are.” Hani took a deep breath to steady herself, and she was all Hyojin could look at. The glowing, stunning princess-turned-seamstress. “I’ve always loved you, Hyojin, and I want to make some promises of my own. I’ll always love you, and always be there when you need me. I’ll always make you smile. And I promise that I’ll never leave your side, as long as I’m alive. I’m yours, and only yours. And nobody will ever take that love I have for you away. Thank you for staying by my side all this time, and I look forward to spending forever with you.”
Hyojin had never been a crier, but she felt tears welling up in her own eyes at Hani’s words. Forever. They were really getting married, and Hani was hers forever. And nobody could take her away.
The friar said something that she didn’t hear, and then Hani kissed her, gentle and soft. For a moment, she got to kiss her back, holding her close and smelling her flowered perfume, before they pulled away from each other to the cheers of their newfound friends, smiling widely.
“I love you,” Hani whispered as she took Hyojin’s hand and the two walked back through the path of flowers, towards their friends.
“I love you too,” Hyojin whispered back, and she was reminded of that day that felt so long ago, where she’d finally said she loved Hani, huddled together on an old stack of hay. They’d come so far, yet Hani was still Hani, and Hyojin was still Hyojin, and that love had only grown.
As the local minstrels began to play and everyone joined together to dance, Hyojin took Hani into her arms and kissed her once again, quick and sly in a way that made Hani giggle and poke her side. The memories of the terrible wedding before faded away, and all Hyojin could think about was Hani.
And as Hani beamed up at her, mouthing along to the words of the love song the minstrels were singing, Hyojin knew that her love would only grow stronger. So she smiled and held Hani a bit tighter, ready for whatever tomorrow would bring as long as her princess was there beside her.
