I love the way Crash Course in Romance explored class in its 8th episode! It’s subtle enough to go almost unnoticed for now but the fact that Chi Yeol had to chose between the piano recital and the chicken party leaves no doubt that it’s written like that on purpose. Chi Yeol is the star of the academy, he’s super popular, crazy rich, and is expected to date people from a high rank like the pianist he went on a blind date with. It’s not like he enjoys this life, it literally makes him sick, but that’s just what is expected of him. To get closer to Haeng Seon, he has to ditch this lifestyle. I feel like this is what episode 8 was about, telling it mostly through food.

Haeng Seon’s food an obvious part of this. She’s a cook but she sells ordinary side dishes. When she sees Chi Yeol in front of the store, Sua’s mom even says she "expected him to have a more sophisticated palate" because it’s not fancy enough for rich people like them. So when he suggests having a party to the family, he invites them to a western gourmet restaurant. Very far from the party they had at home to celebrate Hae Yi’s perfect grade in math in the previous episode... The family feels awkward, out of place, in this fancy and cold restaurant. When Chi Yeol asks to have every course served at the same time, it feels like home again. They speak again, eat big bites of food and food goes from one plate to another. The table was so big for the four of them before, now it feels like it got smaller and they sit closer to each other.

Fancy food like the one from that restaurant or like the snacks gifted by the pianist are great, they make you feel good. It’s new, different, it’s expensive. You want to get it from time to time. But what fills you up is basic, familial food, like Haeng Seon’s. It’s what makes you healthy, what comforts you when you need it. It’s the food you share with your loved ones or those who need it. It's the recipes you get from your mother. Chi Yeol thought he could only stomach Haeng Seon’s food but he ate without problem chicken she didn’t cook because it’s not just her cooking he needs but people to eat with. A family.

I know I havent like talked about it at all recently but man its wild to me that people dont know how obsessed I am with tma lol the last fandom I was in (Tales of Arcadia) I wrote what was supposed to be a massive tma au fic and that I had planned extensively till the turtles consumed me and before that I was super into the tma fandom and drew a bunch of fanart

I dont have much of my tma fanart anymore since my last laptop like completely imploded and i couldnt salvage my art from before 2020 from it but heres some of the tma fanart that I still have!

(plus a bonus ghoulia from monster high)

I also had some tma ocs!

I cant remember their names but i had one oc who was an avatar of the web who I think had been partially paralyzed by some accident that led her to being an avatar of the web? I remember drawing her in a wheelchair and posting a picture of her in a tma discord server sometime in 2020 or 2019 but I dont have that picture on my laptop so she has been lost to time unless someone from that tma discord server happens to have that pic saved but i highly doubt that i would be that lucky

But I also had another who I still have a drawing of! Her name is valentina and shes an avatar of the buried who is a snowboarder and works as a search and rescue volunteer to help recover people after avalanches! (She doesnt you know actually help any of the people that she finds but you know she avatar of the buried them)

i havent listened to the magnus protocol yet so NO SPOILERS I'm waiting till spring break when i have more mental energy for it but i do plan to listen to it and i am very excited for it

Yesterday I was replaying Deltarune and I was going really insane about it picking up on things I missed on my first playthrough and something that fucked me up hard was this line here

The little ellipsis at the end, almost like you can hear the regret on their voice. Voice of an ad who is realizing maybe they fucked up on this one. But it also made me think of... The possibility of this being a reaction to Spamton's actions.

Because I don't think this was an automatic thing, I feel like their drifting off was gradual. Sure, their jealousy had won them over (I'd have killed the guy or myself if I was them so I don't even blame them) but Spamton was too getting busier and busier the more famous he got, and as they say, that never stopped. He only kept getting bigger, until it all came crashing down. And when it did it was one of them who tried to go find him, after all that.

But I digress, let's focus on the original quote from my favorite sigma enby themselves, Pink Addison. There's obviously not only the regret to it, but feeling like they were abandoned too. Both parties lost a lot and the real tragedy is just how easily it could've have been avoided! Or rather, how beyond their control it was...

But I'll get off topic if I keep speaking so I'll leave it at that. The sheer tragedy that there is to everyone involved just makes me insane. Like I said in a post previous to this; you cannot trace down a good guy or a bad guy in this tale, it's just desperate people taking awful decisions and living to regret their actions.

re: ur post about toshiro and laios - i humbly offer this panel of laios completely misunderstanding the way izutsumi eats isn't an 'eastern thing', cuz hes not used to it

a good panel to bring up 👆 laios is a great example of a well meaning white person who ends up making micro agressions and racist generalizations without realizing because hes ignorant and very underexposed to any cultures other than his own. i mean hell both he and falin are extremely racist about 'the mountain people'

and much like theyre racist towards the nomadic people, kabru is racist towards kobolds due to him conflating them with monsters. tbh i think every character in dunmeshi exhibits some sort of racial bias at least once, which can be hard for fans to deal with, as i think most people are unused to racism being one of the major character flaws in their favs. unfortunately, when writing a story that is implied to take place in an earlier time period, or hell even just writing a story period, you cant really ignore racism as part of your worldbuilding, especially if, like kui, youre using it to make a point.

tldr everyone in dunmeshi is kinda racist in one way or another and it is a deliberate choice on kuis part, because she wanted to portray both real-world tensions through a fantasy lense and flesh out her own world with realistic tensions that would build in its history. if you are ignoring that the characters are racist then you are missing the point

also, im saying all this as a white person myself, so please Please do not think that im the only person talking about this. there are many poc, both in the replies/tags of my post and in posts of their own, who have made similar points to me and brought up things i havent touched on and you should absolutely read their takes as well

#when id first read the manga and the toshiro scene happened i remember thinking to myself #that there was more to it than just toshiro hating him for being 'annoying'#and i had figured that there was a cultural difference there #it wasnt until the omake id used in my original post came out and i discussed it with a friend who is a person of color #that i was absolutely certain that not only was it an intentionally nuanced scene #but that if youre paying attention to the manga as a whole #you can pick up on th subtext that the omake fills in even without having seen it #once you realize that the entire story is told from laios pov and you start paying attention to the things he says and the ways he acts #it becomes immediately clear that he makes these kinds of mistakes rather often #ill repeat the words of the many poc who have been talking about this: he is an autistic man #but he is still a White autistic man
