Kakuriyo no Yadomeshi Volume 6 Chapter 4 - Secret Girls' Night-out

T/N: Hi y’all, it’s me again, it took a bit longer because I did my best to beta-as much as I could, but if it’s still wonky, I apologize, it's not like I get paid to do it lol also it's rather challenging when I had to convert my brain waves from Japanese to English to my native language and however those combinations work just to spew all of these out in sufficiently passable English. So I hope you all don't mind stuff like typos or inconsistencies with the tenses srsly even the original text has that and I just literally gave up evening out the tenses, like really apparently it's no biggie to have an entire paragraph in Japanese that both has past and present tenses (they mostly don't have future tenses) but if that happened in English some would just nitpick that shit out. I mean, yeah, for sure when I do editing and get paid for it I would, but if I'm just reading fanfics from writers who don't have English as their native language I just don't give a hoot, as long as the story's good, to heck with grammar, spelling and syntax. Srsly some non-native EN speakers get turned-off or even scared when nitpickers hit on their imperfect spellings or grammar or dictions, srsly honestly just give them a break, they worked hard to learn another language. I felt this even more so when I started learning Nihongo, like srsly as long as a person gets to say what they want to say even if it's not perfect in anyway, then that's more than enough for me. srsly I am forgiving like that. Also this chapter has more notes than usual, especially regarding Nihongo and stuff, so if you don't like it you can always move along lololol Also I gave up, I'm keeping the titles and roles in Japanese i.e. Odanna-sama, Wakadanna-sama, Bantou-san, etc. I'll just stick in more notes instead lol

So many extravagant ingredients have been hauled into Yugao, and I was flabbergasted by them all. There were also so many cans of various contents as well as dried fish and other products stuffed inside. Canned tuna and other canned stuff were considered as high-end products in Kakuriyo, and I am very grateful. Ginji-san and the Daruma gang from the kitchens delivered a box packed with so many ingredients to Yugao, and we had no idea why. "Well, the Dog said that these are their repayment to our kindness. It's because a while ago, Ranmaru came to Tenjin-ya." "Really, Ranmaru from Orio-ya?" "Hatori-san also came too, with him." In some way, Ginji-san's mood was good. In the original text, when people are talking to each other, rather than say "you" they say the other person's name or occupation + san instead i.e. bengoshi-san= lawyer san, Ginji-san, or if it's a username because they don't like using their true names- USERNAME-san. Because using "you" in any way, shape or form in conversations is deemed rude AF. So the next time you chat with Japanese people, please remember to address them by their name, or occupation, unless you've established rapport with them. I forgot to put this explanation in my earlier posts, but it's one of the most important stuff I learned in my Japanese classes, the Japanese folk won't care so much on grammar but more on being polite and taking care of remembering social status stratification aka just be polite by using polite terms. I actually experienced this first hand after chatting with some of them, they just told me not to use Google translate and just chat with them with whatever I know. They're very grateful when people could talk to them in their native tongue, especially when the honorifics are used. when I write souvenir product, it's translated from omiyage=お土産= something that you take home for your friends or family when you go have fun somewhere like a national park or a museum or amusement park. Like when you buy takeaways - T-shirts, food, keychains, etc. and bring them home or something. Is there an English equivalent for this? Because I don't know. In my native language we have an equivalent, well, for most Asian languages I guess. Don't know about others though.. Hm.... korewa....*inhales* O_O

I think elsewhere in the world this is a practice, there’s a thing called indoor and outdoor slippers or shoes. P135 but being a Gesokuban, he's pretty much a member of the management staff. Surprisingly, I thought this was a bit rude. Most likely, Akatsuki is sneezing a lot right now. "Wah, udon, udon--" Finally, the udon has been boiled enough. Everyone started putting udon on their bowls. "Gahh... This is it. The udon to finish the hotpot."** "Cooking this in the dashi makes it yummier, doesn't it?" The udon has surely absorbed the umami and the fatty flavors of the amberjack. I added the refreshing taste of the Sudachi Ponzu in mine. This went smoothly down the throat, and this perfectly wraps up the the meal. No, I mean, this is a work of art. "Hey Aoi, you only drank one glass of the liquor? You go drink some more..." "Sorry but, I dont drink more than a cup. Previously, drinking made my eyes hurt when I look at things." A cup of that liquor tastes great. But I dread getting drunk if I drink more than my limit. But everyone was just drinking heartily, so I guess it's fine. The mountain apple liquor also has another nickname, it's called "Easy Bandit-Killer". "Well then, next is the Waka-danna sama's turn" O-ryo continued the conversation where we previously left off. "Waaat? Even Ginji-san?! But.. Isn't Ginji-san perfect? No, a perfect Youkai? I couldn't find any fault with him." T/N: Just in case you're wondering how this works, it's rather easy.. After eating all of the ingredients in the Japanese hotpot, like taking out the veggies and meat, there's a lot of soup left. It's easier to just drink the soup but in Japan, they add stuff to help it go down easy. Choices are either noodles or rice, and the young ones love putting the noodles in. It actually tastes good either way, but I prefer noodles. I think in Persona 5 they also had this same dilemma lol Also yeah Ginji is just the ball, perfect ball of fur lol but he also has this shadowy and mysterious side so if you want a dude of mystery, Ginji's your man gahahaha P139 "Eh. When a little girl couldn't get any confidence from everyone and has to hold it together by herself, when that perfect Ginji-sama sees that person, his voice would probably not break so easily." "The Waka-danna sama isn't a greedy type, but look, what Aoi-chan is saying is that the Waka-danna seems to have no hobbies or interests. I don't know yet lol are there any Ginji fan-fams here too lololol P140 I heard it from the lady waitresses that aren't easy to talk to. That person, he has undoubtedly became likeable. And then, the Waka-danna sama, didn't he take care of you in your condition?" "..." With a wicked face, O-ryo was testing me with her words. But to me, up until now I think that Ginji-san is likeable, and in that case it's not even a joke. He hardly comes to Yugao now, and because of that it's gotten lonely... "On another point, among the Waka-danna sama's nine tails, the third one below, from the right seems to be the most unique.That is somehow a weak spot." "Kasuga, how did you know such information?" It's scary... Kasuga's information is creepy. Even though she's drunk the power of her research skills scared all of us. "Well then... Choubachou** Byakuya-sama--" "O-ryo, don't you dare take another step over there--" We suddenly exercised caution with Byakuya-san. T/N: OK so my bad, Byakuya’s supposed position ranges from accounting to reception, but I just previously translated his position as head accountant because it’s what I got before. But he’s more or less the chief of management operations, which includes accounting. Anyway... Hey, I mean, if Byakuya can kick Raijuu's ass then it's justifiable that Byakuya is always in a sour mood, and it's bad to talk about him rudely. Raijuu's a pain in the ass for sure. Arrrgh P141 In the end, this girls' group had nothing more to say. We shuddered when we remembered stuff, and inside the kotatsu we all curled up. Though we were only just talking about him, his pressure on us made us feel defeated even in here. "H.. However, Byakuya-sama stealthily spoils the pipe cats living at the back of the mountain..." "Kasuga, nobody knows about that yet. Don't talk about it, if that gets leaked out we'll get killed." Well, in short, Byakuya-sama pours all of his love to the pipe cats. Could it be possible that, among all the people in here right now, we're all thinking that O-ryo didn't really want to give up that position? Especially Kasuga, she was shell-shocked, and her face looked troubled. I felt that the mood has changed, so I tapped my fist in my hand. "Oh, right, right. I brought some large-sized grapes from the fruit orchard park, and I made some grape tarts. Let's eat some? I added a lot of grapes on it, it's a custard cream dessert." "Kasstard? On top of the crust, I laid down an easily-made custard cream made of Cassowary egg and some wheat flour, with cow's milk and a bit of sugar, P144 and these buried the grapes cut in halves, which I later baked in the oven. After baking this for a while, I topped everything with raw grapes and pure cream. These were arranged as such because the tightly-packed grapes beneath this layer cannot be seen. "Woooooow!" Those dynamic-seeing eyes, everyone's eyes were sparkling. I sliced the large tart in front of everyone, and when the neatly-arranged grapes were cut through, Shizuna-chan let out a regretful-sounding "Awww".** There wasn't any fork, we used kuromoji, special wooden chopsticks** normally used for Japanese sweets or just ate them using our bare hands. "Uwahhh this is juicy-- What is this, I thought this food has raw grapes, but this tastes is like it was meant to be a baked dessert!" "This is the first time I ate something that tastes like this, but the grapes' sweetness stands out, it's really delicious--" O-ryo eating with her hands and Shizuna-chan using a kuromoji, they fell into a trance like typical ladies who love sweets. "This is generally called a fruit tart, and with the rich taste of the eggs in the custard cream, it blends well with the sweet and sour freshness of the fruits, and together these really bring about the best-tasting combination. The sweetness gets reduced, and the sourness becomes mild." As I was explaining how the mild taste came about, Kasuga haven't taken a single bite of the grape tart, and while propping her chin with her hand, she was observing it quietly. T/N: Lol I feel you Shizuna-chan, I feel the same when a freshly-bought ice cream tub looks so neat I don't wanna cut through it lol that's why ASMR of perfectly arranged anything are famous bahaha

Kuromoji=黒文字= Japanese sweets are eaten traditionally by using tiny wooden chopsticks, to cut and skewer them. You can check them out via search engine or smth P145 "What is it, Kasuga? Don't tell me, you don't like grapes?" "Hmm? No, it's not like that.. I really love grapes. That dessert you called tart, I was thinking of something." Kasuga ate held tart like it was a hard cookie, and bit on it heartily despite doubting what it was, before chewing on it. She filled her cheeks with the grapes, the custard, and the fragrant crust. "Mmmm, I wanted to eat some more. The grapes are heavy, and they burst in my mouth." Just a while ago we were enjoying some amberjack shabu-shabu, but we still had room for dessert, and all of the girls ate as much of the grape tart to their hearts' content. "Aoi-dono--" In that moment, came a boy's voice that can be heard from inside Yugao. "It's Sasuke-kun. I told him that I was going to give him something to eat after his working hours." The three ladies around me went "It's.. Sasuke-kun?", and they looked at me from the side. "Say, Aoi, tell Sasuke-kun to come here too." "Really? Even if today's a no-guys-allowed girls' night-out, it's OK to call him in?" "Yes, it's totally OK. Sasuke-kun is an adorable and good boy." "..." Even though there was a nagging feeling, I went outside of Yugao and called out to Sasuke-kun. "Sasuke-kun, thank you for your hard work. We were just having a hotpot party inside but, P146 I'll also add something for you, OK?" "Hotpot, is it? Is it because it has already gotten a bit cold?" "Come in. Everyone's waiting for you. I'll go and prep up." "I understand." Sasuke-kun unknowingly trudged toward the innermost room, and opened the door. "?!" No sooner than opening the door. Sasuke-kun the ninja couldn't react fast enough, and he was dragged into the room. "Gyaaaaahhh! Aoi-dono, Aoi-dono---" Sasuke-kun, the innocent and sweet Sasuke-kun, he was preyed upon by the ladies starved of men. "I- I'm sorry, Sasuke-kun. I'll make you a delicious hotpot, OK?" I feel guilty that he gets harassed, and using another earthen pot I added dashi stock, vegetables and the amberjack slices, and hurriedly went towards the innermost room. Please, please let Sasuke-kun be OK! "..." Sasuke-kun was already pestered by the drunken ladies, here and there he was grumbling being urged to drink liquor, P147 his hair has been tousled and his scarf stretched out, it was horrible, but he was being coddled and spoiled. "Aoi-dono--" Poor Sasuke-kun, he was crying out of fear. He was unprotected, and the swarming girls were getting their fill, it was another shabu-shabu over the kotatsu setting. They're feeding him too much. While he's eating delicious food, I will protect Sasuke-kun.

Despite the determination of that bunch, just like turning off a lamp, the girls suddenly collapsed.

Zzzz.... The effects of the mountain liquor came at last, and the intense sleepiness has struck. "Aoi-dono.. What on earth, were you doing here?" "Hmm? It's a secret girls' night-out, Sasuke-kun." "Secret girls' night-out..."

It's really too much to handle drunkeness. The true intents and personalities of the girls, were hidden and unseen, in this empty room these must not get out. Everything that they spewed out, they'll probably forget in the morning. And that was the so-called, girls' night-out.

Other stuff I used to do this: Kodansha Kanji Learner’s Dictionary (you can buy here, I’m not sponsored btw). I was about to buy the older edition but then the newer one came out 2013 so I bought that instead. Worth buying since I was able to find nearly all of the words I needed just by stroke pattern alone.

Merriam-Webster's Japanese-English Dictionary (the red-covered 1996 version is apparently out of print right now). This is what I have been using for a very long time, I bought it when I was still a fetus (yes I am old so what lol), and after so many years, when compared to newer editions, I still prefer this one since its entirety is Japanese-English, the English to Japanese gloss are just 16 pages tops, so you get more Japanese words for your buck. But that’s just my opinion, maybe other people prefer the Jap-En x En-Jap IDEK.

Basic online dictionary, Jisho. Knowledge of verb conjugations and other words are necessary since not all have entries.

If you can read Japanese, you can buy the whole set in Amazon Japan, they’re shipping worldwide now, I think.

Brighter Than Any Star:

An intimate look at everyone’s new favorite bass player

(or the blades band au that nobody asked for)

*inspired by @iaraiumi‘s STUNNING guitarist tyril art (here)

tyril-centric and tyril x mc bc this would be 7k+ words if i didn’t focus on just one of them but i tried to give everyone a moment in the spotlight. credits to a fic i read from the 100 fandom years ago for the format

used my f!elf mc ryllea graywater for this (though i guess this is kind of a modern au idk asjdla); also i don’t play any musical instruments i’m sorry in advance for butchering any of the technical parts 😬

Tyril Starfury — with his red silk shirts and slicked back hair — looks every bit the part of a rock god on stage with the rest of BLADES; but here, in the confines of their tour bus, he is a quiet presence, calmly sipping tea in the corner with a notepad and pen in his hands, his mind far away in the early hours of the morning.

If you had told me eighteen months ago that I would be shadowing Broadway darling Tyril Starfury as he traveled cross-country with his new rock band, I would have laughed and called you preposterous.

And yet, here I am, witness to the madness.

Nia Ellarious, the band’s youngest member and resident pianist, offers me a cup of the same tea as Starfury’s, telling me to enjoy the quiet with an almost apologetic smile.

I understand what she means not long after.

(There’s no such thing as a quiet morning in the world of Mal Volari.)

Every bit as charming and flamboyant as his on-stage persona, Volari greets the entire bus a good morning with flourish, throwing both me and Ellarious a magnetic smile before slipping towards the coffee machine with exceptionally light feet. (More on that later.) He taps on every available surface while he waits for his coffee to brew, humming softly as if figuring out a melody right there on the spot.

If Starfury is bothered by Volari’s banging and humming, he makes no show of it, paying him no mind as he continues to scribble in his notepad.

Ellarious beams as the scene plays out in front of her. “It’s not every day that they don’t get on each other’s nerves,” she explains. “Especially in the morning.”

It’s around this time — almost noon now — that Ryllea Graywater, lead guitarist and vocalist, wakes and joins the group, heading straight towards Volari and the cup of coffee in his hand.

“Thanks,” she winks as she takes the cup from him, shooting Volari a shit-eating grin that he returns easily, already procuring another cup for himself.

It should be noted that Graywater doesn’t seem to talk to anyone until she’s had at least one cup of coffee, choosing instead to slide in beside Starfury in the dining booth, eyes darting towards the notepad he’s writing on. They kind of just... sit there, minding their own business amidst the chaos that is the rest of the bus.

(Volari’s launched into an animated story about the inspiration behind last year’s summer hit, “Contessa, Contessa”, but I can’t help being drawn to the more quiet story unfolding behind him in the dining booth.)

Slinging one arm against the backrest of Starfury’s seat, Graywater casually invites herself into his space, a thoughtful smile on her lips as she looks over the notepad in his hand. There’s an openness between them that tells me that this isn’t a new occurrence, a comfortable ease in the way they seem to be engaging in a wordless conversation.

“He’s kind of really private,” I recall the younger Starfury sibling, Adrina, telling me about his creative process years ago, at the release party for his collab album with then rumored girlfriend and writing partner Kaya Duskraven. “He’s always been a perfectionist. Doesn’t really let anyone other than Kaya hear anything until it’s finished.”

But there’s no trace of that here, in this quiet moment with Graywater, bright, almost triumphant smiles on their faces as she picks up a pen and scribbles something on the pad too, immediately tapping out a melody against the table as if to test-run it by Starfury.

The smile he gives her is glowing.

I look away — suddenly feeling like an intruder in their private moment — catching the tail-end of Volari’s Contessa story, right before Imtura (no publicly released surname) accidentally slams me against the wall when the bus makes a rocky turn.

“Oof, sorry there little guy.” She raises both hands in apology before heading straight for the coffee machine, haphazardly dumping its contents into a generous-sized mug before immediately proceeding to consume said coffee as she plunks onto the other end of the dining booth.

And that’s how the first morning of me shadowing BLADES goes.

Ellarious tells me I’m lucky it was a good one.

With over 16 years of experience under his belt, Tyril Starfury has been in the music and entertainment industry far longer than the rest of the BLADES members combined. At the tender age of nine, he won his first piano competition, regarded highly for his precision at such a young age. He would continue to play competitively until he discovers a new love — musical theater.

It’s no surprise that Starfury ends up on Broadway — he comes from a long line of revered artists, all of them regarded as geniuses of their time. Though some would argue that his family name opened doors that would otherwise be unavailable, no one could deny that it was his clear, soaring baritone and unrelenting work ethic that kept him on stage.

It’s on this stage that he met young Kaya Duskraven, an understudy in one of his shows, prompting a fruitful five-year partnership spanning two EPs and a mini-concert series, Stars in the Dusk.

(The name was a little on the nose, but the critics loved them all the same.)

The two shared such a comfortable rapport, on and off-stage, that they naturally sparked dating rumors — Starfury was always quick to deny them.

No one could have expected the partnership to end on such a bitter note.

To this day, no one knows the real reason behind their fallout — Starfury walked out in the middle of their televised performance without apology or explanation — though there have been no shortage of rumors and theories, a lot of them involving one Eleryn Rosecoven, better known in the industry as Shadow Court bassist dXenia.

I tried to bring it up once, after several bottles of beer have been consumed and the band is swapping stories over s’mores made over the tour bus stove.

I’ve never been shut out so fast in my life.

There’s an audible crack from the s’more now crushed in Imtura’s hand, her piercing amber eyes seemingly driving a death sentence into mine. Volari sighs disapprovingly (and dramatically) at me, and even Ellarious — friendly, cheery Nia — looks at me with a pointed glare, turning off the stove, signaling the end of s’mores night.

“I would prefer not to comment,” Starfury nods at me, years of practiced courtesy showing in his tone and all I want in that moment is for the earth to swallow me whole.

Graywater follows when he excuses himself from the group. Everyone else avoids me like the plague.

It’s hours later when Starfury and Graywater return to the bus — I pretend to have fallen asleep in the dining booth in hopes that I can avoid their fury until the morning — but Graywater approaches me with two cups of tea in hand, an unreadable expression on her face.

She slides over one cup to me — if the scalding temperature of the tea is intentional, she makes no obvious show of it.

“Look,” she begins with an exasperated sigh. “I know you’re only doing your job here. And we did agree to this article, so I’m sorry if things got a little tense back there.” She pauses, as if considering her next words carefully. “We’ve all lived moments in our lives that we’re not proud of. Tyril’s had to live his in front of the public eye. He’ll talk about it when he feels ready to... but his past doesn’t define him, none of ours do.”

I nod, understanding that this is the last we’ll speak of the subject. She smiles as if in truce, telling me that I don’t have to banish myself to the dining booth and that no one will pull any pranks on me if I sleep in the shared bedroom.

I barely catch any sleep anyway.

There’s a ferocity in the way they protect each other that I didn’t notice at first — it could be subtle sometimes, like in the way Volari always checks in with each of the band members every night before going to bed (even though Starfury usually brushes him off); or in the way Imtura always makes sure every one stays hydrated (feel free to interpret that however you wish, whichever way is true); or in the way Ellarious always has some form of baked good running in the oven, more often someone else’s favorite rather than her own.

(I learn the hard way that no one is allowed to get in between Imtura and her cupcakes. No one.)

It’s also plain as day whenever they’re on stage together, their set list a carefully curated show that highlights each member’s strengths without anyone getting overworked. Everyone’s always quick to catch each other whenever they hit snags along the road — there’s a moment in one of the shows when Volari’s mic suddenly gets cut off and Starfury swoops in without missing a beat, a small nod of the former’s head seemingly the only cue he needs, the trust between them implicit.

When I had asked earlier why he’d joined BLADES, Starfury simply shrugged, as if it was no big deal.

“It was by accident. I happened to be at one of their shows and they needed a bass player. We kind of just… worked and we’ve played together ever since.”

But this kind of chemistry doesn’t just happen by accident. No, this is the product of months and months of hard work, of opinions clashing and arguments spanning days before sitting down and realizing it’s not impossible to see eye to eye; it’s battles won and battles lost together, respect earned and trust merited.

To call them just another band seems too small a word almost. Insufficient.

They’re kind of like a family.

(If your typical family involved regular knife and axe-throwing contests, that is.

... it’s best not to ask.)

Tensions are high backstage at Deadwood Festival Grounds.

Volari has been pacing around non-stop. Ellarious looks like she’s using every bit of her willpower not to bite her fingernails. Imtura keeps violently tapping her drumsticks together. Starfury’s got his arms crossed in a corner, brows furrowed.

Graywater is doing a handstand for no apparent reason.

The anxiety is understandable — tonight’s a crucial moment for the band.

With only one more show before the grand finale at Whitetower Stadium, all the bands are doing their best to retain the crowd’s favor, each playing well-established fan favorites, saving the riskier song choices for the finale.

That is, everyone except BLADES.

They’re planning to debut two new songs tonight, both of which written solely by Starfury.

It’s a ballsy move on its own — no one’s exactly itching to drop the ball on their fans this close to the end — but add in the fact that Starfury hasn’t released any solo-written music since the Duskraven fallout and you’ve got the makings of a battle that could either go incredibly right or disastrously wrong.

Let’s back up a bit.

After the Duskraven breakup, Starfury had gone into something of a hiatus (if that’s what you call disappearing off the face of the entertainment industry) before dropping the 13-track self-written album, “Honor,” without prior notice or promotion. Fans were ecstatic to hear from him after his sudden break, but critics were less enthused, calling the album ‘a brash, arrogant attempt at flipping the metaphorical finger at Duskraven that ultimately falls short’, noting the clear absence of Duskraven’s touch in his music — all technicality, no soul.

Starfury’s penned a couple of songs with BLADES since, spanning genres as colorful and diverse as its writers, but there hasn’t been a solo venture since Honor, leaving long-time Starfury fans anxious to hear him take lead again.

Graywater calls everyone into a circle, locking eyes with Starfury as she gives his hand a squeeze.

She makes a speech that I‘m not privy to — but everyone is visibly more resolute after she speaks, each raising their fists to meet in the middle of the circle.

“I’m honored to be on this journey with you all,” I hear Starfury share, a glittering smile spreading on Volari’s lips at the statement.

“I knew you liked us!” he says, crossing the circle to throw an arm around Starfury’s shoulders, pulling him close.

“Group hug!” Ellarious laughs and Imtura closes the circle into a solid embrace.

Starfury appears to be in shock — as if this is the first time this has happened — but he recovers quickly, a quietly contented smile on his face.

The last streaks of daylight have disappeared by the time they’re called to stage, the crowd restless from a long afternoon under the blistering heat.

Darkness has fallen.

But then the opening chords to fan-favorite “Murderous Masquerade” cut through the evening air, a flurry of flashing lights bursting through the sky, and the Deadwood comes alive.

Volari takes center stage in his flashy black and gold ensemble, working the crowd with such ease that it’s no question why he’s been dubbed the band’s de facto showman — he’s frankly just mesmerizing to watch.

Next up is “The Priestess and the Warrior,” an epic tale crammed into four and a half minutes of heart-racing drum beats — provided by the insanely talented Imtura — with a tender piano-driven bridge near the close, Ellarious’ heartbreaking vocals driving the whole thing home.

Graywater takes lead in the third number, “Flirting with Monsters,” a delicate neo R&B number that sounds nothing like the title suggests, her earnest, airy vocals lulling you into a comfortable, almost dream-like state as she entices her lover to stay.

The one thing common between the seemingly weird mishmash of genres is Starfury’s steady bassline, providing a much needed thread of cohesion to the set list. Where Volari, Imtura, Graywater, and even Ellarious tackle their music with the raw aggression of fresh blood on stage, Starfury attacks with quiet, seasoned finesse, his expertise evident in tracks like “Watch your back (or I’ll watch it for you)” and “Drakna Queen” — two unconventionally energetic numbers that would be difficult to listen to live if not for Starfury’s sure hand bringing them harmony.

“Alright, we’re gonna slow things down for a bit,” Graywater announces, eyes sparkling with excitement as she looks at Starfury. “Tyril’s got a new song and we want you guys to be the first to hear it.”

By now, I’ve seen enough of Starfury’s performances to say that he’s not a nervous performer. Even in the earlier stages of his career, there was always a quiet assuredness about him — which could have also been easily called arrogance — and while that’s still present now, there’s something different about the way he interacts with the crowd, a sense of humility present in the way he put his hands together and gives them a brief bow before he sits himself in front of the piano.

“I would like to dedicate this to a person very special to me,” he begins, his fingers gentle on the keys, a soft, lilting melody dancing in the air.

(He’s not even the least bit subtle about the way he looks at Graywater.)

“She has reminded me, time and again, that hope and love, when we allow it, can shine the brightest light in the dark.” Graywater shakes her head as if to shrug in nonchalance, but she meets his eyes dead on, her smile beaming with pride.

Turning to the crowd, Starfury adds, “I hope this gives you as much joy as you’ve given me. This one’s called ‘Kilvali.’”

For the next minute, it’s just Starfury and the piano, the world quiet as his voice fills the air. If there was ever any doubt that Starfury had lost his vocal prowess, there wouldn’t be any now. His voice is clear and strong — reaching even the farthest row of people on the music grounds — albeit with a softness now that I’ve never heard from him before, his attachment to his music feeling infinitely more personal.

“All my moments with you are worth whatever pain that came before,” he sings, his voice soaring as the rest of the band join him in the second verse. The performance is even more powerful with the added instrumentation.

Tiny cellphone flashlights illuminate the crowd as they sway their hands in time to the song, the emotion in Starfury’s voice rolling out in waves.

Twitter user @notmxwllbmnt13 sums it up nicely:

SJSKJSJSK TYRIL STARFURY KILLED ME TONIGHT!! ALL!! THE!! FEELS!!

(It really was beautiful.)

The crowd cheers as the song draws to a close, but the battle’s not over yet (as Starfury would tell me himself later) — the true test lying in whether or not his second song proves a testament to his newfound voice in songwriting… or if it’s just a one-time stroke of luck.

“If it’s alright with you, we’d like to play you another new one,” he says and the applause is deafening when he turns over the mic to Volari, the latter pulling him into a one-armed hug before taking to the crowd.

If Duskraven’s interviews post-breakup are to be believed, Starfury has never — not once — written a song that wasn’t intended for himself. (She claimed to have co-written plenty of solos for Starfury, but he allegedly never returned the favor.) A quick glance at his repertoire would make this allegation appear true.

“It is true,” he tells me simply when I bring it up later in the tour bus. (Despite the coolness of his voice, I notice him shift a little in his seat.) “I was... unconfident, extending my words to other artists like that. I was also prideful and arrogant — afraid to face the judgment and criticism of my peers, and for that, I truly am sorry to Kaya. She deserved better from me as a partner.”

It seems Starfury has taken that incident to heart. Listening to “Purple Dreams” with Volari’s teasing falsetto on the forefront, it becomes clear that Starfury wrote this with the former’s vocals in mind, the flirtatious mix of his sassy vocal riffs and playful onstage antics giving the song a delicious, intoxicating energy.

It’s probably the most experimental I’ve heard from Starfury as a writer, both in terms of lyricism and melody.

“I’ve learned a lot this last year, creating music with BLADES,” he explains. “Not only did I find a new perspective on songwriting thanks to them, but my bandmates also gave me the courage to try things outside of my comfort zone and to allow myself to make mistakes. They inspire me.”

Years ago, he was dubbed as stiff and awkward outside of the theater stage, with Duskraven providing all the charm in their partnership, but now, on stage with BLADES — as Volari points his sultry gaze at him, singing his own lyrics to him — Starfury smirks, leaning ever so slightly against the showman as his hands tease along the guitar strings, driving the crowd wild.

It’s clear by the end of the song that Starfury has won over the crowd, and for once, he actually seems to revel in it, his smile beaming as he takes in the applause.

The rest of the band are even more thrilled for him, each leaving their posts to engulf him in another hug.

He doesn’t hesitate this time, allowing the fond gesture in front of their adoring crowd, each of them savoring the quiet moment, and I think, out of all the times I’ve seen Starfury on stage, this has to be my favorite version of him.

In the company of his friends, lifting and supporting each other, Tyril Starfury shines brighter than any star.

“We haven’t talked about what we’re doing after yet,” Starfury admits when I ask him about the future of BLADES after Morella Fest. (Each of the members are also solo artists in their own right, after all.) “But whatever happens at the end of the tour, we’ll always have each other, regardless of whether the band continues or not. I can’t imagine my life without these people now and I hope I never have to.”

He’s smiling as he says this, watching his bandmates fight over the last levenfruit before he excuses himself to join them, Graywater and Ellarious easily making space for him in the dining booth, Volari and Imtura rounding out the little world that now seems completely their own.

No ATLA shipping wars, please. There is room for ALL the ships.

So I’m sure anyone who’s been tracking me lately knows that I’ve been all up in Avatar: The Last Airbender ...

And I must say, after checking out the tags, I am TERRIFIED to speak my mind about ANY of the ships I like!! Like, I don’t want to be thought of as a poisonous Supporter Of That Which Is Toxic And Problematic because I did or didn’t gel with one ship or other. Spoilers under the cut.

See, I’m always the kind of fan that nobody likes: I’m the MCU fan that appreciates Steve and Tony; I’m the Star Wars fan that loved all nine Episodes. So when I say that I sail literally all of the ships because all of them hit me in different kinds of feels, well, y’all know to expect this from me.

(I should say at this point that the only thing I’m considering ‘canon’ for the purposes of this conversation is A:TLA; no LoK or comics is relevant here.)

(Also, can I just say what a wonderful change of pace it is to be in a property where, at least in the generation of our ‘mains,’ there seem to be more named, developed female characters??)

So I’m gonna start out with saying: I like the canon pairings as they stand! Kataang, Sukki, and Maiko being the main ones, obvs. However, I also like all kinds of AU pairings too!

Like Zutara - I mean, I can hardly say anything here that ten thousand others haven’t already said better, but their journeys do parallel each other in a lot of significant ways, and I think that, by the end of the show, they do legitimately share enough to have the foundations of a good relationship, if as a fanwriter you wanted to go there. You could make much of the poetry of their differences (”you rise with the moon, and I with the Sun”), and/or really develop their existing ability to safely be the ‘splash zone’ for each other’s turmoil. Besides, I think Katara’s mothering fussbudget energy would be a great thing for Zuko, and there’s a gentleness to her that he’d find healing.

{Now, I’ve seen a lot of comparisons between Zutara and Reylo, made by people who either want to demean or defend both ships. I’ve also seen these comparisons soundly trashed by people who like one, but not both, of these ships. As someone who never has had strong feelings either for or against Reylo, and as someone who loves Zutara but not exclusively, my response to all of that drama is a big old shrug of my shoulders. So don’t come at me screaming about Reylo, either to stan or cancel. Please just don’t.}

Also I don’t know a good way to say this, but you know how some people just can’t seem to resist reading Zuko and/or Sokka as gay? Well, I can’t stop reading Mai as lesbian; I don’t know why.

I don’t know which pairing Taang is. If it’s Aang/Ty Lee, omg yes!! Kill me with all the sparkles and rainbows! I already want to eat them both up. More seriously, I think Aang’s peaceable temperament would be a really welcome change in her life, after Zuko’s turmoil and Mai’s ice and Azula’s, well, Azula-ness. She’d probably just love Aang’s aura :)

If Taang is Aang/Toph, well, we’ve observed that our flighty lil’ Aangster could use a grouding influence :) I don’t know who on Tumblr pointed it out, but Toph is the last person in the world to fangirl over Aang, which seems to be very good for him, while also not clipping his wings. While I do believe they’d be the kind of couple to quarrel and, at times, drift apart from each other (she’s incredibly rooted while he’s the embodiment of a free-spirit), for some reason I can easily see them finding each other again. There’s a scene in my head, one where an adult Aang is faced with the necessity of a sacrifice play that he might not come back from, and instead of tearfully trying to convince him not to do it, Toph says, “Go get ‘em, Twinkletoes.”

[And if you ship Zutara alongside Aang/Toph, you could have a fanfic where you did a Parallel, with Two Ships Of Opposite-Power-Benders. I’d be a fan!]

Now I’ve seen Sokkla floating around too, and I must say that this intrigues me, especially the way that this ship is connected to ideas about the redemption of Azula. I’ve seen some people being really upset that Azula never got a redemption arc in the show, but c’mon guys. A redemption arc for Azula would have taken a long-ass time - it would’ve been awesome, but it would’ve taken a long-ass time, definitely longer than a fourth season, I think. But if you were going to go with a combination of a redemption arc and a ship for her, Sokka would be a great idea. I don’t think Azula knows what fun and merriment are, and who knows those things better than Sokka?

[Honestly, that’s the thing about shipping Sokka with anyone: he would bring them laughter.]

But enough about the het AU ships, let’s talk about the gay ones!

Zukka would be the most prominent example, of course. The rapport that Zuko develops with Sokka over ‘The Boiling Rock’ is beautiful to behold (jokes about ‘that’s rough, buddy’ aside), and heaven knows Zuko needs someone to teach him how to laugh.

And remember how I said that I somehow can’t see Mai as straight? Well, I also can’t stop shipping her with Azula (don’t know the ship name for this one, but I know it exists). Obviously this ship would have more than an edge of ownership and manipulation about it, but they’re so deadly radiant and it’s like I can’t look away from them.

And Ty Lee is just so adorable and sincere (even with all the buried sadness) that shipping her with almost any of the other girls just makes my heart melt. Especially Katara, who would just cuddle the hell out of her whenever she’s feeling down. Or even Azula, who would totally own and work her but also, like, dazzle her. Main exception being Suki - for some reason, my head goes all kinds of hot, dirty places when I imagine Suki and Ty Lee sparring.

However, all this being said, I still have love for the canon ships that we got.

For example, like I said, I do ship Kataang, and I think together they’re incredibly sweet, but I also think that Katara’s tendency to hover and Aang’s tendency to (literally and metaphorically) fly away from/float above problems would jointly become a not-inconsiderable hurdle in a long-term relationship. Now I’ve observed couples in real life with similar dynamics, and I’ll stick out my neck and say that I consider this a workable hurdle, especially if both Katara and Aang grow in maturity and interpersonal understanding as they get older.

Similarly with Maiko: we see that, where Zuko’s emotions tend to run fire-hot, Mai’s tend to run ice-cold; we saw a clear example of these tendencies really clashing with each other. And Mai’s way of showing Zuko affection does seem to have genuinely perplexed some people who watched the show, to the point that they didn’t read it as affection at all. But again, drawing on what I’be observed, some couples really do develop a ‘love code’ that they understand even if literally no one else does. I don’t see any indication of either Mai or Zuko actually ill-using the other; and I will always stan this line from Mai when she made her big choice: I love Zuko more than I fear you.

As for Sukki - well, you already know. Sokka definitely grew and healed a lot from it, but I don’t think the trauma of being unable to protect Yue is one that will ever truly leave him. And as much as Suki understands him, I do think Sokka’s protectiveness will sometimes grate on her. She’s a motherfucking warrior-chieftain. And yes, this can definitely shape into a relational problem, but not one that can’t be worked around.

So ... TLDR, I love all the ships, and refuse to be part of the anti drama.

BTS Answers: Different Gender Bestie | Social Relationships

Premise:

Since the question is a bit open-ended I hope you don’t mind if I split it into two parts:

Which member is most comfortable with a different gender person

Which member would benefit/be supportive the most with a different gender best friend

These two doesn’t have to be mutually exclusive, you can have a lot of friends in a different gender than you, but you don’t necessarily feel close/closest to any of them. You can also have a best friend of a different gender, but your primary group of friends tends to be the same gender as you.

It’s important to look at this because the way you treat another person (who’s different than you) is telling on how your relationship is going to be.

Whether you can sustain it (grow from it/with it) or if you’re doing it for convenience (it’s easy, makes you look good, you feel different) is an important thing to consider.

Most likely, there’s nothing wrong with having an easy relationship with someone of a different gender (or it makes you feel different/like a breath of fresh air). But there’s some difficulties that comes with it that might be hard to reconcile/accept because clashing of ego/understanding towards each other.

So it’s just-- things to keep in mind. When we’re looking at relationships and how we treat others.

Now that we got that out of the way, let’s get onto focusing the lens on BTS for this.

BTS - Different Gender Bestie (In No Particular Order)

Hoseok.

Self-assured and comfortable where they are (Taurus) it doesn’t matter if it’s a guy/girl/any gender, as long as they can express themselves (Aquarius) and feel comfortable expressing their affection for people (like they’re tactile, so that’s a big thing with y know, seeking comfort from their friends/personal relationships- Taurus Moon)

Even if they’re not that close personally (best-friend statues), there’s an easy camaraderie and friendship that if observed from outside, people would think they’re close (Aquarius/Pisces Venus)

Aquarius are also generally known to have large groups of friends anyways, whether it’s girls/guys/any gender. The really good thing about them is their open-mindedness to reach out to people, correct themselves if they treat other people badly/wrongly and learn the civil/polite way to really respect others around them. Which is why they gain so many friends.

With Hoseok here there’s also sensitivity (Pisces Mercury/Venus) that seeks itself in other people (what Aquarius has already gathered). This sensitivity can be a bit more hidden beneath the glam/glow of Aquarius and Taurus-- but that’s the part where if someone truly lives up to it’s expectation/matches it well-- they’ll be close friends for sure. (gratefulness, but also him wanting to do things for another person selflessly as well)

(*This might seem short but we’ll be building on it as we go)

Taehyung

Has that Aquarius Venus as well, which honestly would apply to having more friends in general (Venus- social relationships). This is less about fueling the self but more about applying what they already know.

Aquarius in this position is about getting the experience of hanging out with people. It’s less about the gender (which can sometimes point to him being abit desensitized/insensitive or tone-deaf about gender issues/roles-- coupled with his Capricorn placements/traditionalist streak) and about the broader subject, like community and having that mental/presence rapport for each other.

Having an Aquarius anywhere in someone’s chart can point to them being more flexible about gender roles/norms (generally accepting/supportive of the person themselves-- rather than their experience/personal story) and that opens them up to opportunities/drive to get to know other people besides the conventional narrative (like expecting guys and guys to date, heteronormativity in asian culture especially)

But this also brings some difficulties. Because Taehyung-Hoseok (Aquarius- shared) might find themselves being a bit tone-deaf or desensitized to subtle issues/cues (Aquarius).

They have the tendency to be view things objectively (use their minds)/what they view as objective (perspective), but their position as cis males Aquarius can sometimes point to not truly understanding/emphasizing with people of lesser privilege completely.

(like, they’ll support/be drawn to them, but not truly emphasizing with where the experience comes from/showing sympathy for others-- can be hard because their perspective is still privileged/alot of stubbornness/ego in their chart (Taurus/Capricorn). )

Sometimes the biggest problem stubborn signs faces (Taurus/Capricorn/Aquarius) is that they expect everything to be equal already. They don’t understand that the ways the public treats their friend isn’t the same as how they treat them.

So it’s not as if they’re not going to stick up for you/feel strongly about injustice (they do, they’re very vocal/passionate about it too) -- It’s just a matter of emotionally connecting to someone that can be hard to come by with these two.

(tl;dr: they’re quite stiff, resolution wise they try to understand others at a mental level and which can be taxing when it comes to needing their support emotionally/spiritually and not receiving it.)

Yoongi

Surprising? But also not really?

Since we were talking about emotional connection and support, there’s no way we’re not going to talk about Yoongi.

There’s a slight catch: Yoongi is made up of a lot of Pisces/Virgo Moon. So that already gives him a lot of nervous energy about people in general (mutable signs-- versatility/changeability, but also flightiness/vibing others out)

Social relationship wise, he has an Aries Venus. Aries is already detrimental in Venus, that means the way it’s working can be sporadic, doing things without intentions of following it through or spontaneous decisions to reach out to people even though he doesn’t stay consistent all the time (texting, tsundere tendencies-- Aries Venus/Virgo Moon/Pisces Mercury)

Once he understands, sort out and try to figure his own self out (have a better/balanced understanding of himself/how he operates) -- he’s going to find himself vibing with all kinds of people.

Capitalizing on Pisces at it’s best traits and figuring out a healthier way to fuel his Virgo Moon’s wants (respectability, simplification, recognition and modesty) he’ll find himself (balanced) working to help/sympathizing with others, through creating a safe-environment/space to feel reassured along with his own needs.

Most likely through his crafts, as it’s both cathartic for him and fuels him creatively (Pisces in abundance/Virgo Moon) but also in his personal relationships as well.

Yoongi has a few things to get through first, most likely that Pisces Mercury that stops him from reaching out to people the way he wants to do. While it can be good at speaking to people at large (where anonymousity can help lessen the nervousness/pressure) when it comes to one-on-one, other people’s expectations set on his own personal self can be daunting to someone with Aries Venus (in the context of Pisces/Virgo surrounding them.)

He’s completely capable of showing nurture and care, Cancer Mars and it’s natural exertion (drive/cardinal) for self-expression (reaching out to people) wants to do it. The thing that’s stopping him is his Pisces Mercury, because there’s certain things he’d rather not touch on/think about, and other insecurities that bubbles up with Virgo Moon as well (fear and hesitance).

With Yoongi and his abundance of self-reflection, he’s much more sympathetic of other’s differences than Hoseok/Taehyung.

This isn’t about pride this is about understanding an intimate part of himself through others/reflected in other people. The part he constantly struggles with in learning to accept is himself, and thus why he might have an easier time sympathizing/empathizing with others (Pisces/Virgo-- when they learn how to accept/balance themselves.)

When he tries to accept/understand this part of himself and not try to– idk, harden his water into ice picks? Yoongi’s like the counteract for Hoseok and Taehyung.

Hoseok-Taehyung could quickly embrace the idea/image of having multiple friends (and different genders in their social groups as, y know, people) they can find it hard to maintain relationships at an intimate level because understanding things at an intellectual level can stop them from listen/understanding where the other person is coming from (just in terms of social injustice, privilege, sensitivity issues). There’s certain issues on subjectivity/perspective, and also emotionality that leads down to intimacy (best friend criteria).

While Yoongi might not be as open to accept others, he’s fully aware that once he opens himself up he’s opening doors to learning more about himself/letting this person come through and catch him in his worst moment as well. (Vulnerability/protection, empathy/sympathy, support/intimacy)

There’s a sense of…y know, Pisces intuitively knowing there’s things he has to learn from others. But they can try not to accept that (mutable) and therefore running away from the situation/not opening the door at all (using his Virgo Moon to block it out/Aries Venus as well-- ice picks from earlier).

So it just takes time for him to open up, but once he opens up it’s Real Talk hours with him.

Can talk for hours but also get a little huffy/throw a small fit when he’s reprimanded/has to learn something from someone else. It’s a pride thing as well but unlike Hoseok - Taehyung, Yoongi can actually come around and understand where its coming from (after he has his little huffy fit) because he has that empathetic quality to him (empathize/sympathize with others beyond his own experiences-- Pisces).

Hoseok and Taehyung are more stiff, Yoongi is more flexible. The resolution to the conflict is different.

Jungkook

Can benefit a lot, from just expressing himself. Leo Moon naturally wants to be appreciated/loved by others, doesn’t matter what gender or what kind of admiration as long as they themselves feels like they’re being appreciated for who they are at their core.

This also means, they give back to others just as much. Anything that they can do for others, they go the extra mile to achieve it. It’s extended empathy, but instead of feeling it like Yoongi does with Jungkook it’s a matter of principle.

He will give back what he’s got, and he will do things for others because it’s part of his emotionality (Moon). But more than just-- being hindered or maybe locking out of it through his own emotions (like if he’s upset with something someone did) he’ll still try to fix the situation because it’s a matter of principality (what’s right).

With Jungkook, it’s that nervousness that Virgo has again. This time, two-folds (Virgo Sun/Mercury). He overthinks a lot of stuff, has high expectations for himself and others. He simplifies some criteria but constantly edit it in a methodological way. Virgo Sun/Mercury wants to be precise, while Libra Venus wants to keep an eye open for things to add to the list (of what he should achieve/what others need to match up to him).

It’s about standards, as much as principle. No doubt he probably has friends who are of different genders than him (or sexuality). He’s nervous/hesitant to reach out completely to them at first, but he’s open-minded enough or tries his best (on terms of principle) to really support them.

He has that determination going for him, in doing his best to understand another person. Out of anyone, Jungkook is the most self-aware of his own faults but he consistently/actively tries to do his best to work up from it (in the best possible way-- non-toxic).

The real problem/reasons he doesn’t reach out to people so much (besides his Virgo Sun/Mercury) is also because of Libra Venus. There’s a certain idealism for standards that makes him strive for perfection. Whether it’s with himself or with others.

You know how he’s a bit iffy about being inexperienced? That’s a standard that he wants to overcome (conquer -- Libra as a cardinal sign) he tries his best to reach out to it. And that’s mostly what’s stopping him (as well as extreme pressure from the public as an idol figure).

Jungkook is a tentative maybe here, he’ll most likely be the last one to actually have a girl bestie not because he’s bad with girls or anything, but because he’s hesitant to reach out in general.

He’ll know how to treat people right (Libra Venus). He instinctively strive to perfect all his relationship, and with that Libra it means he’s always conscious of treating people with equity and respect (along with Leo, paying them emotional support as well as doing little things for them all the time.)

With Jungkook, it’s just a matter of finding someone who accepts his standards and accepts him. He can tend to get a little bit worried/nervous and that can translates a little to nagging (BV3-- when he criticizes others way of doing things). They’ll also have to pay him a lot of attention, because Leo Moon -- even with their platonic relationship-- tends to want a lot of support from others (as they should have for what they do).

Jin

With Jin it’s a lot to do with this Capricorn Venus working in contrast to his Sagittarius nature. It’s more to do with familiarity (Capricorn Venus | Cancer Mars) before he acts on relationship.

He has a pretty strong sense of duty in relationships (Capricorn Venus -- like, being cordial and respectful, never pushing boundaries, can be kind of stiff but polite and nice nontheless)

Even when he’s joking around (like how he does to fan on vlive) he never treats them any less than how he would give a person basic respect. He’s just not that kind of person, he plays by the rule a lot.

If it’s something he has to do (like, a business associate/person in the industry) he’s a lot more subdued (to another gender). But if it’s someone he has to know on a personal level, he can be a bit guarded/judge them before he acts (again, he needs familiarity-- especially with the Scorpio Mercury)

The best way to get to know Jin is to appeal to his Sagittarius/Aries nature, fun-loving outspoken people who can still maintain respectability in interactions/doesn’t go out of line (doesn’t make him side-eye) interests him.

With that acceptance/feeling like they’re similar (again familiarity) there’s a deeper need to assess. If the person has inner depth to them as well (Capricorn Venus/Scorpio Mercury/Cancer Mars comes in.)

It’s a lot similar to say Jungkook, in how they’re both probably a little stiff when dealing with people. At the same time, while Jungkook is focused on keeping the ego out (nervousness) Jin is a lot more keenly observative -- so their silence is different here.

Jungkook is more focused on genuinely trying to understand/empathetic to people, and try to make as little mistakes/be less misinformed as possible-- while Jin’s more about having a set standard protocol to treat everyone equally and that being put to the test when he’s with the bestie (needs a challenge-- again, appeal to his Sun/Moon first).

Like even if they become best friend and he jokes around with them, he’s going to still be acting as part of the ‘role’ he’s supposed to play.

Whether it’s the older person role to the person (like the standard-type for that) or the younger more aegyo-like person-- having that social cue/context makes it easier to keep everything to a standard and thus-- less stepping on toes because of it.(Capricorn Venus/Cancer Mars/Scorpio Mercury).

It can seem kind of stiff but he does become very nurturing and intimate with the person (like close bond, he really does care) he just has a harder time showing it outward sometimes, that’s why the Fire Sun/Moon thing is important (so he has a barrier/something to be proud of-- doesn’t have to prove to anyone because they can clearly see how well he gets along with his friends.)

Namjoon

Like Jin, because of his Scorpio Venus (and an abundance of Virgo) he tends to be a bit nervous around people. But Scorpio in Venus position with Namjoon, if the chemistry fits then everything is lock-set to becoming best friends (or atleast close friends)

Namjoon at his core, is a lot more laid-back than people tend to realize. He has his moments when he’s critical and self-aware (Virgo/Libra) but generally his Sagittarius Moon keeps him balanced/on-edge for certain stimulation (good chemistry with another person--appeal to his humour) that makes it easy for him to accept and recognize other people (again, Sagittarius/Jupiter-- empathy, reaching out, understanding others)

Because it’s Sagittarius, the difference between Sagittarius and Aquarius here is that the self comes first. Other people has to accept that he has his own emotions (moods/fluctuation) and if they can accept that, then everything else will work out as well.

He has immense understanding/sympathy for another person, but within limits. Independence and self-motivation has to be present.

With Namjoon, it’s a little easier to relate to him because of how laid-back he is on the front (Sagittarius Moon) but when it comes to something deeper-- he’s less straight forward than people realize.

Talking to him is easy, his thoughts, opinions, emotions are laid there. But understanding him is hard, at least on an emotional/psychological level and that’s what he truly craves/wants from others.

It’s part of the Scorpio Venus, so the criteria of a best friend for him has to be consistent, deep and emotional. it has to have layers, things he can grow/learn from another person (Sagittarius), things he wants to implement in his own life (Virgo), things he finds relatable/funny to another person (Libra) and things that will challenge him to achieve/strive harder in his own self (Cancer).

It has to be all sorts of things put together, one big picture (Sagittarius) that doesn’t have to make sense logically (Libra Mercury-- overthink) but has to fall into place chemistry-wise (Scorpio Venus). It’s creating that balance and stability together. (Scorpio/Virgo/Libra/Cancer)

Honestly, out of anyone-- Namjoon has the highest standard (whether he realizes this or not) and there’s a lot of value placed on friendship so it can be very lonely sometimes.(strives for intimacy/perfection - Libra/Scorpio)

Jimin

Jimin gets a lot of shit for being flirtatious but have you met Namjoon??

With Jimin’s air abundance (Libra/Gemini/Libra) there’s a lot of need for personal stimuli from others/the world around them. Because there’s quite a few Libra in his chart-- seeing themselves reflected in another person and growing/using that to grow with themselves is part of what he needs/wants to find his personal identity/ego (Sun).

You can’t blame air signs for doing what they have to do, and you can’t blame Libra for being what they are. Everyone has their own needs, and these people are one of the most giving/contributor to social relationships we have today in our society so really-- just, just try to understand where they’re coming from.

Jimin has a lot of friends, maybe not a personal best friend because he needs stimuli from people around him (can tend to bounce a lot from people to people). But he’s always a great uplifting spirit and tends to look on the positive side of things for other people (like he points out positive things about others to them, instead of bad-mouthing them behind their backs-- that’s not what he does.)

Like the earlier Libras mentioned above, he has a standard/ideal for perfection as well. With Jimin, he’s eager to get to know people (who are good for him) and provide support (Scorpio Venus/Mars)

The hesitancy comes when he has to pick only one, whether it’s a choice (like the Noisey Interview) or a person he likes best. He doesn’t like having to do that because it doesn’t feel fair.

That by no means indicate that he’s a player, he isn’t. We have to understand his needs/wants (Air - Libra/Gemini/Libra) and be ok with that-- people who are accepting of him and can give/match him in what he gives to others (in their own ways-- but just as much as he does) tends to stick around for much longer.

There’s no like, fear of abandonment because he himself is good enough on his own (has independence). There’s just a fear of disappointment in himself. Libras are hard on themselves because they have that standard/criteria, it isn’t like Virgo’s stress (’next time, I’ll do better’- tactile/more earthy quality) it’s a mental fear they impose around their own psyche/mentality.

So yeah, while Jimin might not have one singular best friend, if people can understand and connect with him in some ways (dedication and effort) he’s bound to have different ‘sets’ of best friends and be ok with that.

Summary:

Hoseok | Taehyung - (Aquarius) embraces friendship, large groups, find themselves having multiple close friends just because they like to have the experience of people around them and find themselves learning best through various people instead of just one. However maintaining/sympathizing with others can be a big issue, especially with subtle/sensitive issues like gender and people being mistreated. They understand and won’t stand for it objectively (fairness) but they’re not going to be able to sympathize/truly understand where it came from fully.

Yoongi | Jungkook - Literally THE slowest people to open up because they’re locked inside themselves, but that’s mostly because their strength is exactly what Hoseok | Taehyung lacks. They’re really careful with being open to learning/sensitive to others, being subtle and picking up clues/being mindful of others is what they strive to do. Has the most to gain from relationships with people of different genders/sexuality, but also fears losing it the most as well. Deeply personal and impactful relationships, if they keep it casual they can learn a lot/grow a lot from it as well.

Jin- A lot like Yoongi and Jungkook, but he’s a mixture of all of them put together. Can be cordial/distant but also deeply caring/personal in relationships. Isn’t like Taehyung| Hoseok where he can easily make friends with just anyone, but he tends to be less complicated than others as well (once they’re in, they’re in.)

Jimin | Namjoon - Libra/Gemini/Sagittarius makes them adept at getting a long with other people, especially since this is about treating everyone equally anyways. Besides being chatty mouths/wants to connect to another person, Libra is also a masculine sign and if it wasn’t so balanced by their water-placements they would’ve had a harder time emotionally connecting to others like Jungkook|Yoongi does.

Ending Thoughts on Libra (as a social sign):

Libra (like the Aquarius placement above) can be rather objective without truly understanding the sensitivity/subjectivity that comes with gender privilege/norms sometimes.

They’re woke about it for sure, but they lack to experience to truly be empathetic/understand it completely. They impress alot of people (different gender especially) with how resourceful/informed they are, but at the same time they won’t really know what it’s like and it can be hard to get close to them because of it.

Libra is both empathetic and stiff. It’s understanding something at an intellectual level, but not the personal experience/details/life of the person which plays a lot into what they can emotionally provide for others.

Say a Libra girl for example, would be popular and sociable with a different/same gender because they’re capable of understanding the difference at an intellectual level. However, that inherent girl-ness would still be apparent (combined femininity/masculinity together). And that’s usually highlighted as the difference that makes them stand out in a lot of their social groups/relationships.

Thus why, Libras can be so popular with another gender (or their own) but still needs to do the extra work to truly match/up be informed as to what they actually should provide for others (they can get frustrated, when they provide something but it’s completely off from what the person wants. They’ll learn/listen in order to understand it better, but because they’re air-signs sometimes it’s more focused on doing rather than supporting the other person completely.)

General Ending Notes:

There’ll always be fights and misunderstanding, but those who become best friends (second part of the question) knows that they can support each other in a better way (strengthen each other) without compromising themselves (especially from the different gender bestie perspective) and without tilting power dynamic too heavily on one or the other-- which can lead to misunderstanding/hurt feelings and misguided actions against each other.

Relationships can be hard, and there’ll be somethings that you do and it’ll upset another person. What matters is (learning/growing) accepting that we’ve hurt that person. It might not be intentional (difference/privileges) but we have to do better and learn how to support/approach them properly.

Astrology is just a guidance on how to be more open-minded to people. Having placements (sun-conjunct-uranus) that caters towards certain gender isn’t a cue to simplify it as just that (’oh I’ve just hung out with guys because they’re better’). When we start being complacent we also start being arrogant/close-minded to others. We’re actively sabotaging ourselves by losing the opportunities for relationships with other people, because we’re afraid to confront/change our own problems (expanding ourselves/growing).

Please be mindful of just– how you deal/take away from relationships in general.

Everyone has the capacity to have a different-gender bestie it’s just a matter of learning/knowing how to treat that bestie right.

There’s also a few different ways to learn how important different genders are in people’s life: checking the 3rd/4th house placement, asteroids (pallas, vesta, maybe even juno) aspects and Venus helps a lot.

OUAT 1X18 - The Stable Boy

I’m very interested to see my reaction to this episode this time! On my first watch, I didn’t like it (At least the past portion), but with time and more insight into Regina’s character, that just might change!

It’s not because of you, Reggie! i love you!

But what was my deal then, and how has it changed?

Find out alongside me under the cut!

Press Release Emma continues her exhaustive search for evidence that will prove Mary Margaret’s innocence in the murder of David’s wife, Kathryn. Meanwhile, in the fairytale land that was and before evil blackened her soul, Regina must choose between betraying her mother, Cora, and marrying for true love, or betrothing royalty and living a regal - but loveless - life; and the event that caused the Evil Queen to loathe Snow White is revealed. General Thoughts Past It’s weird. I know Cora is an amazing villain, and it may be the fault of time, but I sometimes forget just how menacing and evil she was. So seeing the evil she’s capable of show itself again with such intensity was like when you touch someone else after getting a good dose of static shock going through you. Just as with Regina’s villainy up to this point, Cora’s is overt and strong. Even when she’s praising Regina, it’s a backhanded compliment (“You’ve finally done something right”). But oddly enough, it’s when the abuse is less over the top that it’s at its worst, and by that, I mean accepting Leopold’s proposal on Regina’s behalf and getting Snow to divulge Regina’s secret. How Cora’s lunges at insecurities and just makes the bold yet quiet moves to get everyone to do what she wants is terrifying. I don’t have a lot to weigh in on the plot, but I do think that watching it on the second go did a lot more for me to highlight Cora’s abuse and make me realize the quality of the flashback. See, for me, I always felt that Daniel was the main thing for Regina’s revenge about Snow, and I felt on the first go that that was a pretty lackluster approach for such a cool villain because I found Daniel boring (I still do, and I swear that I tried to like him). However, it’s occurred to me recently that this isn’t so much as the main point, but the final straw after a long line of Cora’s abuse. Cora’s abuse is what drives Regina’s character and with this in mind, I went into my rewatch of this episode and found it much more compelling. I mean, all you have to do is look about to see the impact Cora had on me.

Also, as I said before, I don’t like Daniel. I find his character boring and bereft of chemistry with all who he interacted with despite his decent dialogue. Given that a lot of (Not fully, but still a fair amount) Regina’s backstory is dependent on their interactions, it sucks, but I just wasn’t feeling like there was much of a character to connect to.

Finally, I wanted to take this moment to drop a theory I’ve held for a while about this episode. I feel that Regina has a secondary purpose for going after Snow. Now, of course, she blames Snow for Daniel’s death, but that’s lead her to be mislabeled as overly petty. However, I think that that blame has something behind it. Regina doesn’t have magic at this point, and her beloved was taken from her. She has a lot of anger, and no place to responsibly place it. Of course, it belongs with Cora, but Cora just killed her boyfriend and has been magically binding her for quite some time. What chance does Regina have up against someone like that? But Snow? Snow’s just a little kid. Snow’s vulnerable and trusting. Snow was the one to tell the secret. And suddenly, for as wretched as it is, you see how the cogs turn. Present I loved August’s advice to Emma here. Sometimes, I find that skill helpful when I’m writing fanfiction, and the way it fits into the murder mystery was interesting. Their rapport, alongside August’s mystery is a large driving force behind the plot as Emma looks for the way to connect the crime to Regina. They also did a really good job establishing Sidney and then exposing him with that flower pot. For a while, one can forget that it’s there, but once you see it, you know what’s going to happen. Still, the journey to using the plot device was an engaging one. As for the rest of the plot, I cover more of it in “Arcs,” but I found that it was well placed and dramatic. Mary Margaret’s conversation with the DA was especially helpful in reinforcing after last week’s “breather” episode just how bad things are and how important it is that Emma solves this case and fast. Insights -I love watching Rumple and Regina negotiate. Theirs is such an engaging push-and-pull relationship and even in the case of foregone conclusions like the one the audience goes in knowing here, the exact what and how are never what you expect it to be. Because of their power, influence, and shadier dispositions, there’s always something up their sleeves and seeing them poke and prod in search of those secrets is just the best. Also, I love that clash of tones. Regina’s harsh words clash brilliantly with Rumple’s more flowery language. -Hair and makeup really did a wonderful job on the younger Henry Sr.! -”She’s getting a little old for fun.” “Stop coddling her.” I like the implication that Cora’s abuse of Regina started out smaller than it is today and that Henry Sr. was allowed to have a bigger influence on Regina’s development during her childhood. -”I’m not criticising you. I’m helping you.” Holy shit. That is such an abuser line. If it wasn’t coming out of Cora, I’d almost call it heavy handed, but since it s Cora, it’s such a good moment of character establishment. -There’s this great frame where Henry Sr. is walking towards Cora with a face that screams “I’mma kill you if you harm a hair on our daughter!” Even though Henry Sr. was definitely afraid of and overpowered by Cora, it’s clear that he was always on Regina’s side. -The segues on this show between the past and present crack me the fuck up! -In regards to young Snow...HOW DOES THIS SHOW CAST PEOPLE SO PERFECTLY?! -Thank you, Gold for acknowledging the skeleton key! -Gold just has the best expressions during the Q&A with the DA. Every look he gives MM just says “you’re lucky your daughter is breaking this curse.” -Mary Margaret, that’s not true. After Kathryn hurt you, it was your denial of David that kept you two apart. Not saying you were wrong for that you definitely weren’t - but facts are facts. -Regina looks so cute in that blue dress! I’m pretty sure anyone on OUaT can pull off a blue dress! -I love how Henry Sr. reflects both Regina and the audience’s reaction to this horrifying proposal. -So is Daniel just the Mills’ family’s stable boy or both theirs and Snow’s family’s stable boy? -Regina unknowingly gave Snow and Charming the perfect lyrics to their big show-stopping musical number about how they’d overthrow her! XD -I love Regina’s suit in the warrant scene. Red and black - despite her rocking blue as well - are totally her colors! -That whole sequence of Cora trapping Regina and Daniel in the stable reminded me of The Haunted Mansion! -Snow looks so cute in her flower girl dress! -So, the camera doesn’t show Regina’s face as she’s telling Snow how Daniel ran away, but you can just hear the pain behind the monotone in her voice solely because of how different it is from the rest of her lines. Regina’s lines usually host such passion and ferocity, but here, she’s bereft of it. Arcs Kathryn Nolan Case - So, we sort of come to an ending here. Now all that’s left to find out is the “who-dunnit,” so to speak. Personally, I found the case itself boring as well as the conversations about the proceedings. That said, in a way, I’m glad we had it. I’ve seen fics without it happening and they leave David and Mary Margaret with so little to do. Besides, we got some really good character moments because of it, mostly those that go through Emma and I feel comfortable saying that this doesn’t have to do with the fact that Emma is my favorite character because for everyone else (Barring Rumple and Regina who also had amazing interactions), the events of this arc for everyone else become completely irrelevant going forward. Emma and her interactions (Barring those of the other awake people’s) are the only moments that retain prevalence for their characters in the future That’s not a problem: The character moments still stand out - I still adore everything with Ruby and the scene with MM and David in the jail cell was powerful - but it needs to be accounted for. The Mystery of August Booth - We finally get those first glimpses of Pinocchio. It reminded me a lot of Michael’s symptoms in Season 3 of Jane the Virgin. They’re so small that you forget about them with the plot, but as they happen, they make you wonder just what it is. Why throw in a splint? ...I guess we should say a splinter! XD Favorite Dynamic Snow and Cora. I know these two only had one scene together, but damn, it was a good one! When Cora talks to Snow, she’s so warm and very much like a grandmother in the way she speaks, and you can see through Snow’s expressions just how much that paired with what she’s saying is preying on her still present grief over her mother. It’s like that study about the bullfrogs when the water gradually increases. Snow’s about to hurt her friend, and she doesn’t even recognize that she’s being played because of Cora’s delicate manner of approaching things. Writer Adam and Eddy did a really great job here! They have a way of writing very iconic lines, and “Love is the most powerful magic of all” has proved itself lasting - both in verbal and song form! XD In addition, A&E know how to make a villain sympathetic while not forgetting that they’re evil and following through on that. I’ve seen a lot of bad writing of villains (And some of it comes from OUaT too) where they just throw a sob story on a villain and then just flip a switch from villain to hero, but Regina still retains her villainy even as we’re learning about her tragedies, and that makes her feel more alive! Rating 9/10. I love all of the character development we get here. The introduction of Cora gives us that taste of all that’s to come and she’s fucking petrifying, even with the knowledge that she dies! And seeing Regina’s awful childhood really sticks where this resentment of Snow and Mary Margaret is coming from and it makes it glorious! Additionally, the present had a great story too and delivered a cool sort-of ending to the Kathryn Nolan case while giving Emma and August an interesting conflict to work with. I took off a point for Daniel just because of his impact on the story that I actually got compared to what I felt that I needed. ()()()()()()()()()()()()()()()()()()()()()()()()
