i put riza in some of my dressier outfits for when i'm going out somewhere or just want to look cute 🥹 i like wearing a lot of beige, black, and neutral colors. and i also have a few dainty gold rings and necklaces! also i loved having an excuse to draw riza with a bob cut, which is the hairstyle i have!!

also i drew roy in my casual everyday clothes, which i wear most frequently. it typically consists of t-shirts and jeans in solid colors and a hoodie or a light jacket. also included my PJs which are just old t-shirts and sweatpants lmao

Roy is a flower nerd, so he always likes filling the burn areas on Riza’s back with flower drawings. She just lays down and sleeps as he draws on her 🥹

Riza’s earrings are their engagement ring. Roy was broke and young when he proposed to her before Ishavl ( they broke up I think.) so he was surprised to see her still wearing the same earrings he gave her when they met again.

Roy and Riza eloped in secret, and their wedding bands are either on necklaces under their shirts or I saw someone say that Riza has a bracelet and Roy had a necklace as their wedding band which I also love so much

two eyes meet across the room in a ballroom in west city. its a masquerade ball. faces are hidden behind elegant and sometimes extravagant accessories

(she'd know those eyes anywhere)

they meet. talk. laugh.

its light and airy

(everything they are not. everything they haven't been for a long, long time)

the night draws to a close. she's been enjoying herself so much she hasn't noticed the passage of time. in one heartbeat the guests are leaving after a successful night. they're moving on to nearby bars or residence to continue the party, or returning home to their loved ones.

(her loved one is before her. and they will be parting before the night is over)

"will i see you again?"

those eyes, filled with... so much. yet they still hold a hope within them, hidden behind the glitz and glamour of his mask. its almost boyish in his earnestness. as if he's simply a smitten partygoer, wishing to see the woman who'd captured his attention so completely all night, again for more

it's an innocent question. an expected one, given how enraptured and consumed they have been by one another all evening

then there's flashes in her mind. pictures of tangled sheets. and limbs. searing kisses which threatened to leave her mindless, to rob her of her every thought.

(they were always so good at that together)

but no.

he wouldn't.

he wouldn't see her again, not like this. so openly and freely. it could ruin everything for him - them - if they did get careless. complacent.

the thought causes her to yearn. to ache.

but riza knows when she closes her eyes, she will always search for him in her dreams. and in that space, she'd be whole

"remember me," she whispers. "please."

she wishes she hadn't. feels foolish. but she wants to remember this night. cling to it. she wants to remember him like this. light. airy. full of confidence and dashing smiles, affectionate touches, which leave her blushing and flushing in pleasure - much to his delight

there's a tinge of sadness accompanying the smile roy gives her

but his words still cause her heart to soar

bff help 😭😭😭😭 i look up to you so much (and a lot of other royai/riza fan artists, but you seem the most friendly) and i wanna start posting my own riza art, but im scared ill be booed off the app 😭 any advice for first time fma artists? 🥺 i mostly plan on just making riza fanarts, a little riza x oc, stuff like that. thank you 💕

WAAAHH anon you're so sweet!! First and foremost GRABS YOU you should absolutely post your Riza art! Everyone should post Riza art forever because I'm starving and slurp it up. But you should ALSO post it because it's fun to create and share with people! No one is going to boo you off of the platform, and frankly if anyone tries to they probably need to take a long walk in nature and say hi to some people they pass on the street.

As far as advice, the biggest thing is to try to avoid the "# notes = success/good quality" thinking. It's totally natural to want feedback, and Internet Validation Numbers is encouraging! But if you post something and it doesn't immediately get attention, don't beat yourself up about the quality of your work. Some of my favorite pieces (drawings and writing) are "flops", but I try not to let that discourage me or sour how I feel about them. Sometimes it's just bad luck with timing; or good luck, oppositely

Okay now for more technical advice:

Schedule your posts on tumblr. I usually schedule my art to post at 7:30pm EST kind of arbitrarily, it feels like a good compromise of time zones. Please do know that you might flashbang yourself with your art every time (I do lmfao)

Reblog your work again the next day; mix up your timing and don't be afraid to do a few self-reblogs.

Tag your posts thoughtfully but not excessively, afaik only the first 5 tags are will be where it shows up (EDIT: apparently I'm thinking of 2014 tumblr and it's now the first 30 tags! But I would also posit you absolutely will never fucking need 30 tags. Over tagging will not help, so only tag what's relevant). Series name and acronyms, character name(s), and ship name are good. Also include a tag that you put on all your art so you and others can find it easily!

Comedy usually has more reach. People love silly memes and shitposts and frankly who can blame them! That's not to say serious posts don't also get attention, but just something I noticed

HAVE FUN!!!! this sounds so patronizing, but honestly it's best to do things that appeal to you and have fun with likeminded people. Your passion and enjoyment with telegraph through your work and it will make people smile!!!

I also just want to say that a lot of other Rizalikers are super friendly!!! It can be intimidating to talk to people, but we're all just freaks on the internet rotating a fictional character in our heads. The best way to get to know people is just to reach out and comment on their art/writing/silly posts. It doesn't need to be anything crazy! You can also join fandom discord servers to talk to them on a more casual (and frankly easier) platform, with less pressure because it's less 1-on-1. If you want to DM them (discord or tumblr) def go for it, but I would recommend against just saying "hi!" and then not following it up with anything else, because then I just go "hi!" and then I don't know how to push the conversation forward lol

I've grown way too unhinged with these "asks", but I've been meaning to send you this one for a while, so please indulge me!

From what I've noticed, a lot of the Royai fan artists I follow tend to prefer drawing Riza, when they're not portraying her with Roy. But I've noticed that a number of your pieces focused on Roy only, which I find very interesting! Would you say that his character inspires you more than Riza, artistically/creatively speaking? If so, in what ways?

And lol yeah, sometimes I feel like I stick out like a sore thumb among the Royai people. But eh, healthy ecosystems need biodiversity 🤣

I hope my answer isn't too long.

I do have a preference for Roy in drawing, for a number of reasons.

I precise in drawing, because I do love writing Riza, not more than I do writing Roy, but they're relatively even for me - even if, yes, I tend to favour Roy because he's easier for me, there, too.

I like to draw him, because I like his face, expressions and postures, and I like to explore them. He's a fun little guy to draw, when I think Riza is cool AF (and I have a lot to say about her character, too!) but she's not as fun to draw for me (once again I love her and she's in fact the female character I have drawn the most I think, because I have a hard time drawing women, but still, if I'm looking for a quick doodle, I'll go towards Roy).

But yes, they're more or less indissociable for me, and for proof my first fan art for FMA was indeed Royai (here!).

Anyway. While Royai is my favourite ship and I love Riza to bits, my favourite character in FMA is Roy. Roy first. (And my husband has understood that well, he's calling me when we do a rewatch and Roy appears on screen and I'm not watching. Like HURRY ROY IS THERE).

Now, if anyone who knows me from earlier than my FMA obsession reads this, and I describe the utter mess that is Roy, they'll understand that it couldn't have gone any other way. Here's a man in a position of power, who hides everything behind a façade, who's a nerd and highly intelligent (I admit I'm often irked by some posts in the royai fandom. This guy is smart. He's goofy, he's a dork, but he's smart. Book smart, he's a fine tactician, and he can command. Erasing that is erasing part of his identity, and I'm sure part of why Riza loves him, too), has a weird sense of humour even though he can also be intense af, is crushed by unbelievable guilt from his past actions (I admit Roy and Roza both beat all of my previous fixations in that, good job being war criminals, guys 🙃) and intends to repair what he's done as much as he can, one way or another, whose sole goal is to make things better for others/his place/his country, whatever he has to give up for it to work, who inspires others doing that, and who gets badly injured/disabled during the story and keeps going and fighting teeth and nails through it and beyond?

WELL. There is no question I will fall for this dude instantly. This is like. Checking all the boxes for me to be instantly in love with this guy. Like. I think he's actually the only one who checks ALL of my boxes.

I do think however that Roy isn't complete without Riza, and that it's the same on her side (like. I've only tagged my current fic with "codependency" but that's how I write them whatever I write). I'm just fixating on him first, but I still find Riza an awesome character, there's no debate there 😊

I don't mean to be rude or offensive, I'm really just curious, are there any m/f ships you really like in mash or other fandoms?

oh that's not offensive in the least. i think what can get grating is when people are rude about "everything being about gay ships all the time" when i've made it pretty clear that there's a lot of gay stuff on my blog and if someone doesn't like it they can avoid me pretty easily.

so, a few things: 1) i'm relatively new to shipping and it doesn't rank high for me amongst things that draw me into a narrative or fandom - i am not dedicated to many ships in general.

2) even if i can logically 'see' a ship, i like to write smut so if i'm not turned on by the idea of these people fucking then i won't have more than a passing interest in them as a ship. i can be into a fic that uses sex to explore a dynamic without being into the sex itself, but it's not where the majority of my time is spent. that said, i've been in this MASH box so long I've produced fic i would've never dreamed of writing when i first started the show. see: infinite monkey theorum for why that might be lol.

in general, i wouldn’t say gender affects what appeals to me in a ship or a character. i like traphawk because of the nature of their relationship, not specifically because theyre both men, although in their case, the two of them being each other’s non trad partners is relevant to the anti-establishmentarian themes of the show. I dont think it would be half as effective, and therefore as impactful on me, if they were a het ship. their joint commitment to being little shits is why i love them so much together.

ANYWAY to actually answer your question: yes

within MASH i'm really into: margaret/trapper, ginger/trapper, almost any threesome with hawk/trap + a lady friend, hawkeye/kyungsoon

passing interest in: trapper/louise, hawkeye/margaret, hawkeye/bigelowe, hawkeye/carlye, klinger/soon lee, frank/margaret, ginger/oliver

highly situational crackships: trapper/carlye, BJ/aggie, hawkeye/kellye, trapper/kellye, hawkeye/peg hunnicutt

other het ships i'm into to varying degrees from very popular fandoms: katara/zuko (atla), rose/nine (dw), ten/martha (dw), ten/rose (dw), roy/riza (fma), batman/wonder woman (dc comics), nightwing/batgirl (dc comics), ollie/dinah (dc comics), rogue/gambit (marvel comics), han/leia (star wars)

... altho now that i think of it, the caveat with most of these is that with the exception of roy/riza, i don't think i endgame ship any of these. i won't not read a fic that implies they're endgame, i just don't think i really "OTP" any of these, I just enjoy them for various reasons.

honourable mention: mulder/scully - have not seen the x-files but i believe in them.

Hawkeye’s gaze is hard.

Hand curled and tucked into his lap, Edward fiddles with the thick fabric of his overcoat as he keeps his eyes low, trained on the ground, trying his best to avoid the gaze he can feel flitting from his face to his arm as fingers clutch and rub against the crook of his elbow. He’s flustered, unease settled deep in his chest, stomach tight, throat dry as he swallows back any words that might come bubbling up the back of his throat and put his mouth. This is uncomfortable. This is embarrassing.

He’s fourteen years old. He doesn’t need some to hold onto his arm and wrap clean cloth around a careless wound split across the soft skin of his forearm, a fair amount of blood trickling down and wetting the bandages. He doesn’t need someone to give him that exasperated look and chastise him for something he already knows he shouldn’t have done. He’s suffered the consequences, why does he need to sit and see Hawkeye’s show the obvious harshness in the lines of her face? Her obvious annoyance towards what he’s done?

He gets it. He’s stupid, he’s careless, it’s all his fault and he knows and if he hadn’t gotten so impulsive none of this would’ve happened and-

“Stop it, Edward.”

Ed stops up short at the sudden statement, brief confusion blossoming in his chest as Hawkeye speaks, tone leaving no room for argument, authority replacing the slight scold she had had before when she took his arm into her hands and began to clean his wound. Ed breaks eye contact with the floor and turns his gaze toward Hawkeye, befuddled at her words.

“Wha…what?” He stammers out, trying to stamp the confusion that he knows has bloomed over his face.

Hawkeye clucks her tongue, giving a slight furrow of her eyebrows. She pauses briefly in her wrapping. “You’re mulling. It’s over now. Move on.”

Edward stares, both in shock and slightly mortified that Hawkeye has so easily and quickly been able to pinpoint his emotions and scold him once again. How had she so quickly been able to cut down his wall and call him out? And why had she? He was right. This was his fault, and if he hadn’t been such a dumbass his arm would be fine, and Hawkeye wouldn’t feel the need to scold him and treat his wound like he was a child. Now, no one would trust him.

The movement of bandages and a slight sting as his skin shifts, raw tissue rubbing, snaps him back, an argument forming on the top of his tongue. “Well, if I hadn’t -“

“Edward.” Hawkeye warns, voice low but snappish, and words die on his tongue at once. “You will stop beating yourself up about this. You made a stupid decision, yes, and I wish you hadn’t, but it’s not worth anything to keep lingering on it. Move on.”

Edward stays silent, quiet, eyes back on the floor and slightly curled in on himself. He doesn’t know why, perhaps because he is so rarely on the scolding end of the sniper, but her words carry a heat different from that of the Colonels and Al and even the rest of the team. It’s not crueler, or more hurtful, but it hits in a way that’s raw and achingly familiar and he doesn’t like it one bit. He doesn’t like feeling he’s angered her.

“Okay,” he whispers, hunched and soft, still as bandages wrap around his arm.

He excepts silence then, for Hawkeye to be done and for this to turn into a rather uncomfortable memory that he’ll dwell on for ages.

Instead, she speaks again, voice much softer, hinted with warmth.

“I’m not mad at you, Ed.”

Oh, oh, the words are gentle, soothing, and the seldom use of his nickname makes it that much more familiar, much closer, and the weight in his chest twists and writhes as the sentence settles in. He allows himself, only briefly, to look back at her, to catch a quick glimpse of her face.

Hawkeyes gaze has softened.
