I wish I could think of a clear way to get across that expressing a harmful opinion out loud is no longer just HAVING an opinion, it’s acting on it.

Saying something out loud is an action. Once you act on something, you now have put it into the world and it has consequences.

Example:

If I keep it to myself that I hate, hate, hate goldfish, that’s my feeling. It may not be right but it’s also not wrong. No one knows, every goldfish is free to swim on without being burdened by my bad fish vibes.

By making this post, however, I have taken an action. I have decided to tell the world about my hate and I can’t control what the world does with it. I just get to witness those consequences and react to them.

If my action cause a friend to feel so justified in their own hatred of goldfish that they decided to flush theirs down the toilet….they are an asshole. And I’m not personally responsible for it. But is it also fair to say I had NOTHING to do with it?

If I am famous, and I tell all my fans about how awful Goldfish are, I go on news shows about it, publish essays about it…how responsible am I for the sudden increase of goldfish being thrown out?

If my goldfish heard me, and understood english of course, as all goldfish do, and jumped into the air to be free from an owner who hated it….I don’t think that’s all my fault….is it?

If I said instead I love goldfish and only hated koi, but my poor goldfish had been dreaming every night of a beautiful pond where it could stretch and grow to a long, lovely koi, the kind I hated….what am I responsible for?

All of it? None of it?

If I had said nothing, how many goldfish wouldn’t have been hurt?
