‘We need more bipolar characters’

first of all i think this is common knowledge but he exhibits a complex and erratic personality which i think could potentially be interpreted as symptom of bipolar disorder - bipolar is a characterized by extreme mood swings that include emotional highs (mania) and lows (depression) - throughout the series and manga (i think the manga shows this better) mellos behavior fluctuates dramatically displaying periods of intense energy impulsivity and irritability which align with manic episodes,,. - in the manga mellos depicted as ambitious driven and sometimes reckless in his pursuit of catching Kira. he has a chronic case of impulsive decision making such as kidnapping poeple and hijacking a character showcases a lack of regard for consequences which is a hallmark trait of manic behavior - i also think mellos extreme emotional responses ranging from fits of rage to moments of despair mirror the intense mood swings characteristic of bipolar disorder. he also struggles with self esteem and identity also point towards bipolar disorder... individuals with bipolar disorder often experience fluctuations in self esteem oscillating between grandiosity during manic episodes and profound self doubt during depressive episodes - mellos constant comparison to near (who he he and only he sees as his rival) and his need to prove himself could stem from underlying insecurities exacerbated by his mood swings

him developing bipolar could totally be a normal trauma response from literally a lot of abuse that he has faced, most of the main characters from wammys house show no signs of like rebellion or outlandish behavior like he does but that doesnt necessarily mean that nothing happened and i think the author gave characters such as near and the other orphans way too much mental fortitude. bipolar can be developed at any age and its especially common between ages 15-19. not to mention other than it being genetic, theres a huge link between bipolar and childhood trauma. like imagine being groomed your whole childhood into this competitive environment with other 4 year olds to be the smartest toddler so u can substitute this crazy genius when he dies. and think of it like come on theres no chance all of these kids desperately wanted to be detectives when they grew up there was definitely like some sort of foul play. L is an exception obviously since the orphanage became abusive after he came and he was treated like a king basically while the other orphans mental state was completely disregarded because they were only brought in from several corners of the world solely to be his successor. in fact the first generation orphans were literally expected to kill themselves because of the pressure and A killing himself literally was not a shock at all to the orphanage in fact i suspect that a lot of the first generation orphans made to succeed L had a horrible mental state and also killed themselves which if you think about it B (which stood for backup) losing his mind was completely normal even if the way he went about challenging L was not. not to mention how he had to live with shinigami eyes but thats for another post lolol.,,, anyways yeah mello's behavior is actually justified when you think about how much of an abusive household he lived in even if its kind of obvious that the author disregarded coming up with an explanation for the orphans mental wellbeing and how it would have affected their adolescence except from the character of mello and even when they show mello they basically make him seem insane and watari like an angel . reading the la bb murder cases from mello's perspective really opened my eyes to like how it actually was in wammys house u can really understand it from his tone and stuff also with that one page hold on lemme find it

'but what if they could copy him? what if they could make a backup? that was us. L's children, gathered from all corners of the world. children gathered together, never told each other's names. but even for a genuis like watari, creating a fake L was easier said than done. even for near and i, who were said to be the closest to L... the more we tried to be like him, the closer we got, the farther away he was, like chasing a mirage. so i hardly need to tell you what it was like when wammy's house was first founded, when he was still experimenting. the first child, A, was unable to handle the pressure of living up to L and took his own life, and the second child, beyond birthday, was brilliand and deviant. B stood for Backup.'

So. B and A getting super high together. B has an insanely high tolerance and A only smokes maybe once or twice a semester, if studying allows. A has a Horrible high and is super on edge and anxious, but B makes them feel really safe so they're not completely bugging out. B is just vibin' and having fun, but also being a bit of a Shit Disturber. Keeps bringing up creepypastas and A ends up sitting snuggled up super close to B on the couch with their arm around B's. Headcanons you have of near?

Thank you for the ask!! He is my favourite little guy ever and the urge to write a 5000-word essay about him was SO strong, I had to physically restrain myself from doing so. But here are a few of my thoughts about him, divided into three categories:

1. His attitude towards L

Obata states in Volume 13 that he thinks Near disliked L, and while I don't agree to quite the same extent, I definitely don’t think he was a big L fan - certainly not to the extent that most other kids at Wammy’s House seemed to be. Near is very open about his disdain for people who blindly follow one leader/authority figure, and thus I think he’d find the general idolisation of L at Wammy’s House off-putting. He’d have some level of respect for L as someone who is very talented and accomplished, and he’d like the fact that he works for fun rather than for money/status/accolades/etc. However, I don’t think he’d agree with how extreme some of L’s methods are, and he’d hate how easy he was on Light. In my opinion, the reason he was so dead set on staying true to L in the C-Kira oneshot was partly to keep up the charade that L was still alive, and partly because he lost his sense of self when Mello died; but that is a WHOLE other can of worms.

2. His daily life & routines

During the Kira case, he wouldn't have had much of a life outside of work. I don't think that would have bothered him much, if at all - I do think he enjoyed the challenge of the case, and he was able to keep up many of his hobbies while he was working - but since it was such a big undertaking for his first ever case, he would have had to make a few adjustments to his daily life. Since moving into his own HQ at 17, I tend to think he started sleeping exclusively on the floor to make the transition between work and sleep easier. He thrives on consistency and likes having predictable routines to balance out the unpredictability of detective work. He wakes up around the same time each morning. He eats pretty much the same thing every day, and has very limited tastes. He takes long baths in the evening, and during canon, that was the only part of his day when he stopped thinking about the case. On that note, I also think he’s a very clean person and he hates the feeling of being dirty.

3. His relationship with Mello

Of course, I can't go through my headcanons for Near without talking about Mello. I am a very firm believer that Near has been in love with Mello since they lived together at Wammy’s House. I think he’s always been fascinated by Mello because of how completely different they are in their attitudes and approaches to problems, and he admires Mello’s passion and dedication to his goals. He recognises that their weaknesses are each other's strengths, which makes them far stronger as a pair. These feelings became more romantic in nature in his early teens. I think he would have been thrilled when Mello re-entered his life post-timeskip, if only because he finally had confirmation that Mello was safe and alive, and if Mello had lived after the Kira case, Near would have had his crimes pardoned as soon as he was officially handed the title of L (based on canon, it seems like L has enough legal influence to do this). I get the impression that the Wammy’s kids were raised on the “any means necessary” principle because that was L’s philosophy, so Near does not hold any of Mello’s crimes against him.

Okay listen, You'd have to be together for a long ass time before he even considered it. L has to be sure he can trust you and that you can handle him.

Two: he asks at the pure style of the mob. Fancy, luxury, and suddenly your reception is full of dangerous personalities.

Realistically, tho, I don't see him into the idea of marriage

I think the ceremony would be short and not in a church, yet there might be some religious items there as decoration and symbolism.

The reception would be glamorous. Dark and elegant. Maybe a black and burgundy palette.

Honeymoon

IDK maybe Vegas? Something fun and exhilarating that keeps you both on thrill all the time!

I think that when he's in love Mello is really into spending time with his s/o, and has a hard time leaving, so I think it'd be a long honeymoon that only ends when Mello truly needs to get back to work.

Tattoo rings probably. He may or may not have proposed with a candy ring.

I don't really see him being big about this, but as you wanted it, and it's exciting for you he'd oblige.

Can you have a Star Wars-themed wedding? No? :´( Oh, what about a lord of the rings one?! No? oh. Okay. So he guesses something based on a game is out the table too, huh? Yeah. Well, you can pick.

There wouldn't be one if not for you, so you get to choose: a beach wedding, forest wedding, or city wedding, he'll go with what you pick.

Matt's idea of a perfect honeymoon is junk food and recording your reactions to horror games to watch later with popcorn as a comedy movie

If you're okay with that then cool! If not, I guess he'll allow you to pick the place as well, as long as you don't make force him to be outdoors for too long.

Never thought about marriage until you jokingly call him your husband and damn, it felt good.

He's confident that you'll say yes. Yet he's terribly anxious when he asks.

Seriously, what makes L so attractive to people? What makes him so attractive to you? Is it really just how fucking insanely intelligent he is? Like by all means he’s not that physically attractive unless you’re into that sickly-Victorian-dying-child-that-occasionally-lacks-eyebrows-in-some-panels thing (no judgement because apparently I myself am entirely into that), and he doesn’t look like he showers daily.

Is it just deadass because he’s that smart? And his unique personality? Because other than that he is most certainly not the most eligible bachelor out there.

I say this with more love towards L than anyone could ever dream of.

This is a totally valid question and I think we should talk about it, actually.

So, first things first, let’s take a second and acknowledge that the bar for romantically viable characters in Death Note is a bit low. We have Matsuda, sure, and Misa is obviously a goddess but, if we’re being honest with ourselves, Matsuda’s a cuck and Misa’s clearly red green colorblind, and unless you want to just completely disregard common sense and want to go with Light “Women are so simple” Yagami, the dating pool is shallow unless you want to add Soichiro or any of the characters outside of that main pool. Between the Wammy kids it’s an easy pick. Within the Kira task force it’s a slightly harder but still relatively easy pick.

Following up on that, he is solidly the second most relatable character in the cast from a personality perspective. He’s funny, sociable, and actually talks about embarrassing things that he’s done. He’s honest most of the time, clearly passionate about what he does (if only in regards to the Kira investigation) and is delightfully petty against someone that, if you like L and his moral ideals, you are going to hate. L, while eccentric, is still a relatively caring person who obviously can and is willing to attach himself to other people (albeit on a surface level) and doesn’t let that get in the way of things that need to be done, which is indicative of his strong work ethic and drive. Also he’s smart which makes the show less frustrating to watch.

Let’s talk brass tax here for a second. Let’s be selfish. Let’s acknowledge that the man has a stable job and an obvious sex drive and romantic desire. Let’s acknowledge the smoothness of “I could actually fall for you.” If you were to get into a permanent relationship with him, would you have to worry about your finances ever again? No, because even if you’re the main provider he is apparently so good with money that at the age of 26 he has enough savings to construct a building on his own and keep safety funds for the people around him. You never have to worry about him cheating, he’s gonna make sure you’re taken care of, and he is actually an active person which is just a wonderful thing to know.

Let’s not kid ourselves; L is hot. He is the alt boy ideal. That is the target demographic. He is so easy to dress and he looks so comfortable in his own skin and one could argue that his looking like that is a stylistic choice and not his just not washing. He is athletic to an extent and has proven his physical strength so you know he’s not just skin and bones under his clothes. He is very doll-like, which is my type and the type of a lot of the people who watch/read death note.

But why do I like L Lawliet? I like him because he’s smart and because he’s fun to write. I like him because he’s relatable and because you know that if he ever left the house long enough to actually get himself a spouse that he would treat them as well as he could manage and love them passionately. He’s fun to talk about and he’s fun to hang around and I’m a sucker for a good voice and that’s all I really need in a man. Is he eccentric? Yes. Do I think that there are aspects of his character which might impede his ability to be a 10/10 boyfriend/husband. Yes. Can I ignore those things because I like him so much? Absolutely.

Death Note as Bubble Tea

i was going to gong cha yesterday and i wanted to try a new flavour, and it got me thinking about death note. i’m more familiar with milk tea and gong cha, so that’s what this post will be about.

note: for toppings, everyone gets regular black pearls except for the wammy house kids. inspired by the gong cha that I went to running out of black pearls. i’m not familiar with many of the toppings, so i’m not going to include them in my hc. for sugar and ice levels, wammy kids don’t change them, light goes sugar free with little ice, misa has little sugar and no ice, mikami takes his with half sugar and less ice, and takada asks for less sugar, and standard ice. everyone would order a large, except for light and mikami.

Light Yagami: Royal Pearl Milk Tea

Light is a basic bitch who went with the top ten; it was safe, what can he say? It tastes a lot like tea, so he just kept on choosing that as his drink.

Not going to lie, my original choice was taro coconut milk tea, but I thought that Mikami should go with taro and Takada double coconut to show how both of them are similar to one another, and their friendly acquaintanceship. I think that Mikami is another basic bitch, so he also picked something from the top ten.

Kiyomi Takada: Double Coconut Milk Tea

I headcanon Takada to be a beach person, so coconut flavoured everything is right up her alley. My og choice for her was oolong milk tea, just because she looked like a tea person (coffee too).

L Lawliet: Earl Grey Milk Tea with 3J

It reminds him of his time in England, not to mention that it has pudding and grass jelly; mixing his ‘love of tea’ and his love for sweets together. Another basic bitch who chose from the top 10 list.

Mello (Mihael Keehl): Strawberry Au Lait

It’s sweet as hell, and he wants it that way. Even if everyone is side eyeing him.

Near (Nate River): Cookie Choco Milk Tea

I found it hard to choose for Near, but I went with this one because 1) it’s sweet (a rule for wammy kids) and 2) because it’s brown and dark brown, like different morality shades.

Uhm yeah, they are! I took A LOT of creative liberties with them so I understand the confusion but I'm gonna use this as an opportunity to clear things up a bit.

I built 2 Death Note AUs I'm currently drawing art for.

DN 2.0 | Trying to stay as close to manga canon as possible but changing up whatever I feel would explain some inconsistencies and make canon more believable. Strong focus on Wammy’s House and what happened during the timeskip for Mello and Matt. The main big change being that Wammy’s is a “normal” boarding school for highly gifted kids instead of an orphanage and does not raise their students to specifically become the next super-detective. Mello, Matt and Near have families and acutal lives outside the plot of Death Note. Death Note is just a short but impactful part of their lives. So there are redesigns and OCs involved. No romantic/sexual ships though.

DN 2.1 | DN 2.0 but Mello and Matt get romantically/sexually involved at some point because they are just a lot of fun together and I always had a weakspot for them 🖤

Since I'll probably never gonna work out everything I'm planning to do with this project, I'm just gonna be so bold and link you a Notion page with most of my notes to the 2.0 AU. I'm sure some of you will have a lot of fun with this too, not just me. It's all a WIP, a big ass collection of headcanons, so don't take any of it too seriously. Sorry for the german bits inbetween. A -

he was the in-house music/pop culture expert. if you needed a music recommendation you could go to him and he'd definitely find you something.

he was a master violinist, but after being scouted for wammy's he set his sights on the guitar and spent years learning how to play. his fingers were pretty much always calloused because he kept losing his picks.

he never lost his irish accent.

B -

he was the reigning king of pranks. never turn your back on him, i mean it, he will hotwire your car to roll down a hill (true story, ask roger)

the thing that set him apart at wammy's the most was the fact that he would just. get the mop out. sometimes. it wasn't unusual to spot him cleaning something unprompted. clean freak b? clean freak b.

after A died, he didn't stay long. he couldn't stand to be under the same roof as L, and for the short while he was still in the house he moved around like a ghost, seething with just. grief and anger. he left without a word, or a note, or any sort of message at all.

L- (for everybody's sake i'll keep this one short)

he's been to his fair share of concerts, shows etc (i'm an 'L actually went out in public' truther till i die)

as teens, A & B helped him deck out his padded cell with posters etc to liven it up, and he never took them down. over time he converted it into a ragtag office

he and roger are not friends. far from it. they so do not get along. L still calls him 'codger' occasionally and roger gets reminded of B every single time.

Matt-

he cuts & dyes his own hair, and he definitely got into stick n pokes (+ bonus: the first time he bleached his hair, he had mello help him & the two geniuses forgot to use toner, so he wound up ginger. everything worked out, though, because he wanted to dye his hair red anyways)

he used to creep downstairs at ungodly hours and raid the newly stocked dining hall for cereal. he has run into L multiple times doing this.

he gives me 'broke his arm as a kid and had to wear a cast' vibes. i can't explain it, that hc just calls to me.

Mello-

like L, he got into his fair share of scraps as a kid. they've bonded over that. (+bonus: he has bitten someone before)

he was fiercely protective of matt & near when he was younger in an 'only i can bully them' kind of way that is so common with siblings.

labb gives me an excuse to imagine him as a big reader so that's what i'm doing! he read the classics as a kid & he wrote in his off time too,, he has dozens of journals that will never see the light of day.

Near-

he arrived at wammy's very young, he was actually the youngest wammy alumni on record.

i haven't gotten the opportunity to draw him with it yet, but i hc him as a cane user! a cane that linda customized for him at L's request. (from now on i Will include it in all of my near art istg)

out of the successor trio, he's the only person who was around when A was alive. he has one vague memory of A, that being A giving him a tiny wordless wave.

okay i posted this in the tags of a post i reblogged a few days ago however i wanted to give it it's own post. obviously it's reworded a little to make sense out of context but i don't think wammy liked kids all that much.

ohba himself describes wammy as a guy who "cultivates detectives for fun" and says "it's kind of terrible, isn't it?" the whole orphanage was pretty much a social experiment. wammy couldn't even be bothered to give L an actual name. a nameless orphan that was i think 8?? if you don't have a name at 8 years old you've literally never been loved in the slightest in your life and how hard is it to pick a name?? he could've named him bob or kevin or lloyd or ANYTHING because those were just what i pulled off the top of my head and didn't even have to think that hard about it. not to mention their main turnouts are a suicide (A), a serial killer with a suicide attempt (B), a mafioso with a severe inferiority complex that contributes to everything he does (mello), two people who repress all emotion (L and near). NONE of that shit is healthy. some outcomes are more morally corrupt than others but my main point is wammy's fucked up their top detectives emotionally because they wanted a perfect human, a machine that a human could never be.

wammy was an inventor, not a father. he does this for fun. he's just a rich man experimenting on children and their emotions for no reason other than he can. and he chooses orphans specifically because they're vulnerable and no one is there for them to intervene. he's not a good person and wammy's house was not a good place to grow up

1. Why do you like or dislike this character?

He has everything. Obsession. Vengeance. Trauma. He's doomed by the narrative. He's a freak. He's a fake. He's a funhouse mirror for the most beloved blorbo in this fandom. His very existence raises so many questions about L, the successors, Watari and Wammy's House and I'd go as far as to say his existence gives them all dimension. The destructive nature of Mello's rivalry with Near is the first implication we get that the existence of Wammy's House as an institution and by extension, Watari and L, may not be an unequivocally good thing after all. There are risks and consequences. Beyond Birthday takes that implication and makes it an observable fact and from there the possibilities are endless.

Death Note does not address Watari's motivations or ethics nor the ethics or efficacy of someone like L having the incredible unilateral power and influence that he does, which is a shame because it's such an interesting angle to approach the story from.

I have seen people say they don't like the addition of Wammy's House or dislike what the LABB adds to the story if you don't just handwave it as a spinoff. I get that. Wammy's House is about as unrealistic a concept as the existence of L himself so it can feel superfluous. For me, the LABB makes the mythos surrounding L more believable. Are we meant to believe all was well in the creation of this superhero figure? I can't, so the LABB makes sense in that regard...it represents the collateral damage of such an unrealistic endeavor. It's too much power and too large of a burden to rest on any single person. However, if you're invested in a particular characterization of L, Watari, the successors and their relationships or upbringing before reading the LABB (especially if those characterizations are on the wholesome side), the LABB might fly in the face of all that. (Though, if they went through with making Mello and Near L's KIDS instead I would've fucking hated that. He would NOT DO THAT.) Anyway, it is ultimately a spinoff so people are welcome to dismiss it on those grounds. If I'm being completely honest though, the LABB is what gives the successor side of the story the depth and stakes that make it truly compelling for me. I LOVE the successors in the main material but we just don't get enough of them! The LABB gives them more context even if I refuse to accept Mello's goofy ass narrative voice in the novel (I just don't think he talks like that, but. Hey. Maybe he does. Mello understanders weigh in!) Anyway sorry this got so long and off topic, my point is that I love everything about him but what I love most of all is that he's an entire story in and of himself. If he exists every character he's even tangentially related to gets another dimension, a fucked up dimension and I'm into that shit.

2. Favorite canon thing about this character?

Beyond Birthday represents extremes to me. Obsession, imitation, competition - he takes everything farther than anyone else, too far, in pursuit of his goals. He wipes down his crime scenes to the lightbulb sockets. When he decides to challenge L, he's not even interested in living to see the fruits of his labor. His selfhood, his body, his life are reduced to tools he uses to undermine L, and he views Naomi Misora the same way. You can see this in how he speaks about her as Beyond Birthday, rather than Rue Ryuzaki:

I don't think this is just him underestimating Naomi, I think this is him being so obsessed with L and their 'game' that he reduces everyone and everything to their role in that construct. His victims and himself included. Besides that, we see an incredible amount of self-awareness here. He understands the impression he makes as Rue (a freak), he actively curates his mannerisms (down to his laugh) and flat out tells us how detached he is from his own ego when he says: "There are things I must do before B can surpass L." With this context it's not hard to understand how he successfully convinced the families of his victims to hire him to solve their murders. Rue Ryuzaki is just another piece in this game and arguably, so is B...and they can and will be changed and discarded as the game requires. We see the man rifle through an underwear drawer, crawl around the floor, and listen in on someone in the bathroom...there is no shame, no limit, nothing that deters him from his goal, even his own self-destruction. B truly is an extreme freak, even pretending to be an extreme freak to that extent makes him an extreme freak in and of itself, and that's my favorite canon thing about him.

21. If you're a fic writer and have written for this character, what's your favorite thing to do when you're writing for this character? What's something you don't like?

Oh man, I LOVE writing dialogue for B...my characterization of him is dramatic and provocative and often verbose. He is here to get a reaction out of you, full stop. I think that's why I enjoy roleplaying with him, there is so much joy in forcing other writers to put up with him always trying to fuck with everyone. I love coming up with elaborate schemes for him to try and pull off for the same reason - the feeling of coming up with something so harebrained that even I wish Beyond would use his cleverness for something productive is so satisfying. Additionally, getting into his head and trying to untangle and express his...fucked up, often self-contradictory reasoning, thoughts and feelings without him ever willingly opening up about any of that is a fun challenge. As far as what I don't like...well, it's mostly self-inflicted but as fun as writing B is, I also feel a lot of pressure to get it right. B will want to take charge of any given situation or dynamic; he is fearless, capricious and extreme. There is not much if anything I would past him... so I often wonder if I'm going far enough. I never want my own limitations to get in his way and I think so much and so deeply about this fucker it sometimes feels like I'll never actually be able to properly express those ideas. For example, despite all of my ranting and pondering about B's inner world, in my one published fic, On Killing, Curiosity & Cats, it's mostly L's feelings and internal monologue I am explicit about (even though I am not at all an L expert). It felt easier, or perhaps safer, to show and imply things about B rather than state them outright. Writing him feels like a delicate balancing act, especially if I'm going to publish it! Sometimes Beyond Bitchboy just feels bigger than me.

You know me, i always go for the "why?" So...5 and 6 for Ethe, cause I got to know her a bit more. But, if you got the mood, for Jessica as well.

You chose the hardest questions lmao.

5. why was this oc created?

Ethe -> I wanted to write about the Wammy's House, so the choice was either between Mello, Matt and Near's generation or L's and since I've always headcanon'ed Beyond and A to be with L, at the end I chose him. It was very hard (and boring imo) to tell a story from L's point of view (but in 3rd person) with nothing particular happening, like just him solving cases and whatnot. I had to create my own OCs so they could interact with him, but one of the main aspects of Death Note is that you don't know what goes on in L's mind, so then i realised I couldn't write from his point of view for this exact reason.

So, that's how I decided to make an OC the protagonist and write in 1st person pov, because it made it easier to deceive the reader. If I made the OC persuasive enough or talk a lot, then L's tricks weren't that understandable or just generally, I could make the reader misunderstand the reasons behind his behaviour, like, when L gets that book about the american judicial system or whatever, he doesn't read it. He wanted to use it as a support for his computer, but it was too big. Ethe reads it because if L says he's justice, he must be interested in this subject. He's not - at least, not as a 9 year old.

However, the OC had to be somewhat smart and understand him well enough to be able to challenge him, so their thinking processes are similar in a way, but the conclusions are not always the same. In this manner, Ethe has some moments in which she can see through him and other in which she misses completely the point. L understood that he must always pick the most improbable conclusion with her, so he's always one step ahead.

Making the OC want to surpass L was a bit unoriginal, in my opinion, and I didn't want her to be part of the project. (Being an outsider is important, since the people that hate her the most and her friends are part of it, so if she ruins that for them, everyone is going to despise her.) And while even making her want to destroy it can be seen as such, I still think the circumstances and the characters involved change things a bit. Especially because she's alone in this and all she can rely on is a diary, a physical object that people could take it from her and find out about everything she thinks of.

Some of her traits - being contradictory, petty, judgy, stubborn - are those of a kid, so nothing too special in this regard. The problem is when she doesn't outgrow these, because no one is teaching her to. L is the same, to be honest.

Lastly, when thinking about morality - at the beginning, I think L and Ethe are on the same part of the spectrum. For different reasons, though. L is just having fun, while Ethe has some very rigid and strong morals. This is a life and death situation for her, while L thinks it is a petty rivalry.

So, tl;dr: Ethe was created to challenge and then hurt L and fill in some gaps of his past (all of them), and explain some traits through his socialization at the Wammy's. I don't know if this answered the question to be honest. I am just blabbering at this point.

Jessica -> created for some love story between L and her. I can't explain it really well, because it's a relatively short story (like 25 chapters?). Things happen and L has to deal with a lot, but love story is the main thing.

6. what was the inspiration for their story / lore?

Ethe -> in another ask, I wrote that i don't know how this came to me, but if I have to think about her lore, as in what happens before she comes to the Wammy's, that is not the answer. And I am not going to beat around the bush: I wanted to give a realistic depiction of how abuse might shape the behaviour of a child if not helped, and of the mafia. It's clear that Ethe has anti-social tendencies, and even if I didn't get too much into details, the signs of her family being part of the mafia are still there: his father is told to have been like the owner of the street they were living on; someone was always standing guard in case the police came and also:

I wish I could talk about him every day, let everyone know of his existence, but I can’t, and it hurts. I can't even write his real name, because I don't know it. He has never told me. And I don't want to use his nickname, because his 'job' doesn't define him at all. I have seen how television paints people like him. I shouldn't have known that, because those films are suitable for children over fifteen, but I saw a few scenes on the sly and they were wrong.

He was not the reason for that problem. He only tried to do good for his family. My father, on the contrary, is the one they should show on TV as the 'bad guy', but they never do, or rather, I have never seen a film that depicts him in such a way. Sometimes, they make me question whether my judgement of my father is clouded by his attitude towards me and whether, in fact, people like him are... Different, especially seeing the way they portray their behaviour towards their 'family'. Sometimes, I wonder if it's just envy that leads me to hate him, because he never gave me that typical attitude that people like him have on television and that he actually had towards my mother. If he had done that, what he did probably wouldn't have led me to that call, because, to a lesser extent, it was what A – the initial of his nickname – did and I was fine with that. He did it for his wife and daughter, while my father did it for my mother and money, not for me. Actually, for almost all my time there, I thought he couldn't see me, but then, it became clear that he was simply ignoring me, when he

Never mind. The point is that his disinterest had also been the reason why A had been able to approach me, because he didn't care if he would hurt me.

[Here, I also made a distinction between drug dealers that do it out of necessity and her dad, because every time this topic comes up everywhere people don't really understand what the problem is, which is the organised crime behind it. Anyway.]

Before she was born, both of her parents worked mainly for (and not with) the mafia. Her dad was a "made man/uomo d'onore" - the titles depend on the mafia you are in to be honest. I am using this, since it's more common. But basically, he would get the drugs and had to pass it to drug dealers. He would get the payments and report everything to the "capodecina", who would report it to the underboss and so on. He had to make sure that the drug dealers would sell everything in time, otherwise not only he would have to punish them (by hurting them or their family. if they failed multiple times to reach the amount of money needed, they would also get killed) but he himself would also get punished or wouldn't get any money, so what's the point? And her father wasn't the nicest man alive. He took his role very seriously. Her mother worked too, but just counting the money and keeping everything in order. However, after Ethe was born, things got complicated for her, she stopped doing her task, and she became abusive towards Ethe, while her father was just neglectful. Of course, someone who lives in this environment is not going to be happy and healthy.

Most of the things Ethe does are things she has learnt from watching his father talk to/interact with the drug dealers and capodecina.

This is the inspiration for her lore, 'cause I am so tired of this glamorized version of the mafia I often see everywhere. Even in this fandom.

Jessica -> can't talk about her past that much, 'cause it's a big part of the plot and her relationship with L. My inspiration was feeling stuck and the inability to be vulnerable after years spent building walls.
