To be honest the main reason was because I really wanted a hybrid in the mix who wasn't some furry creature and a reptile or amphibian or smth instead. Etho still ended up feathered but whatever it's close enough! But for ACTUAL reasoning:

He does feel damn ancient, like an old deity of the mcyt space that no one can dislike. Dinosaurs are the same!! They're old but still thought of with great fascination and fondness, everyone loves dinosaurs...

Dinosaurs are ever so mysterious, as many advancements as we make there's still so much we don't know. Just as we know jackshit about mister Kakashi skin man. Also, there are so many incomplete skeletons out there. I didn't have a particular species in mind for Etho, because where's the mystery in that? He can be one of those 5% skeleton 95% speculation dinosaurs like this guy!! Missing jaw and all

"I'm a runner, not a protector" - so, a raptor, or more specifically the Dromaeosauridae family, which literally has "running/runner" in its name

But! I'm always a fan of stuff going against its nature, especially in this case! Etho states he's not a runner yet protects his allies rather fiercely even in total silence. Eg refusing to kill Cleo in SL or to give away Tango's location during the LimL manhunt, same for Grian in SL. He was a bit flaky in 3L I think? And he only started to have genuine care for allies in LL with Bdubs? Though he is still very much a runner in many cases like during the LL Wither fight. Research also strongly suggests that most if not all raptors were solitary hunters, and the way I see Etho (through my shamefully limited watchtime of his POVs...) he feels a lot like someone who ultimately only trusts himself at the start even if he's pleasant and allying with others, and doesn't seem to think he can carry his weight in groups though he doesn't voice this a lot. That's just how Etho is, very composed, but it feels like there's an insecurity there, showcased especially in SL but again I haven't seen almost any of his POVs in full so maybe I'm talking out of my ass!! Sorry ethogirls I'm only a sidegig ethogirl myself... But yeah tldr to me he gives off the vibe of an otherwise solitary animal struggling to find 100% sure footing in a pack. In whichever ways he does go against his nature, its not usually made a show of

At the mention of a raptor, a lot of people will probably think of the glamourized Jurassic Park Velociraptors. But those awesome guys from the movies are actually the size of chickens. In general though, dinosaurs tend to be a bit.. exaggerated in media, despite how inherently fascinating they already are. And I think it fits Etho because we all know how the Lifers seem to fear and mancrush on him when he's just some dork with perfect capability to become pathetic at a moment's notice. Still, he's a clearly skilled player and still respected without question Etho's not some killer machine like some people make dinosaurs out to be. He's just a fellow creature fulfilling his role in the ecosystem 👍

I swear I'm not turning all my Lifers into hybrids I'm not!! Still plenty normal humans in the mix I swear....... But Etho is such a radical dude, I really wanted to do something more for him. The whole Kitsune thing that I often see associated with him is really cool. I don't actually know the reasoning for it but I assume something something naruto, but also, him being this ancient mythical cryptid who people know so little about, you know? It makes SO much sense. So anyway I turned him into a dinosaur instead rawr

As a herbivore advocate I also considered stuff like the triceratops (known for how they protect themselves and their own) but nah the raptor symbolism...

since i'm on my ethogirl arc anyway and i'm in a "praising pearl" mood and a friend suggested it: god can you imagine if pearl and etho collabed on a build. i was trying to figure out what pearl's season nine base reminded me of and. it's etho's season seven base. like in CONCEPT they're two different things (pearl's is largely exterior, although it has some GORGEOUS interior details, and etho's season seven base was famously all interior), but both of them have such similar creative use of color, and jungle vibes, and general vibes, and vibes of "doing things in a unique way in order to make something absolutely gorgeous", and god. can you imagine if pearl and etho collabed on a build like that. i think i'd explode. it'd be the best base ever. they'd use honey blocks in a way no minecrafter has ever imagined using honey blocks. we would all fall absolutely in love. pearl's gorgeous, unmatched use of shapes and form in minecraft (SHE DOES CURVES SO WELL) combined with etho's ability to do weird little innovations and concepts no one would have thought of (thinking of his weird storage system this season) and BOTH OF THEIR use of color... oh it would be immaculate. can you imagine...

the comfort that etho finds in bdubs is so unique and special like i cant stop thinking about him coming up to bdubs and declaring that they race horses and how he literally never talks like that with ANYONE!!! i have so much to say about this but i just started crying

its the way that for as long as ethos been doing collab content, hes been so afraid of asking for things, let alone demanding them. but that bdubs has always seen thru that and very calmly held ethos hand and not given up on him even when he was so quiet about what he wanted.

its about how etho’s rftw went so disastrously that guude just assumed that etho was going to stick to solo content and didnt even bother to ask if he wanted to join mindcrack. but bdubs was watching ethos videos and heard him talk about wanting to join an smp. so he begged guude to let him join. and he did. and he was so scared. and meeting new people went so badly so he just stuck to himself. but bdubs kept showing up and interacting with him without ever being dissuaded by etho being awkward and quiet because he KNEW!!!! he knew that thats not how etho wanted to present. so for years he slowly coaxed etho out of his shell by making sure he was included and making him know that he was appreciated. its that meme thats like “if etho has a million fans i am one of them” except real for bdubs.

he was his only fan (in the cc sphere) for so long, or at least the only one with enough patience and understanding to do the slow gentle work of loving and believing in etho until etho loved and believed in himself. and even now, he won’t ask people for things. he doesn’t ask to be included. bdubs is still the one reaching out, still inviting him along. but meeting new people isn’t scary anymore. he can hold his own, but only because bdubs supported him for so long. and it’s that trust and understanding implicit in their relationship that lets him confidently demand that bdubs race with him. he wouldnt with anyone else in the whole wide world. and bdubs is so!! thrilled by it! he doesn’t make a big deal out of it, but he does make it an immediate priority.

even now, more than ten years later, he is helping etho grow his confidence. with a simple gesture, he’s telling him that he can ask for things!! and people will do them!!! because they love him!!!! because he is so loved!!!!

this is what ppl miss when they talk about bdubs being an ethogirl. he loved etho when it was not easy to love etho. he loved etho before etho loved etho. he has had such a profound impact on etho that he would be completely unrecognizable without bdubs in his life.

there is nothing more loving in this world than showing patience to someone who is growing into who they want to be. and there is nothing more rewarding than letting that person grow into you and take your better parts and become a happier human being because of it. and thats what bdubs has done for etho for a decade and will do for him over and over until the end of time.

A gas station sits sandwiched between spindly pines and an outstretched road. Its lights flicker a fluorescent off-white glare, illuminating the sole occupant inside the store: a bored looking cashier who alternates between flicking through his phone and reading a magazine. He waves when you enter, but otherwise pays no mind other than looking up every so often to make sure you’re not shoplifting. You get the sense that, even if you were, he’d shrug and keep reading anyways.

It only hits you, when you’re elbow deep in the coolers reaching for a drink, why the place feels so…off. It’s not that it’s midnight and you’re the only customer here. It’s not the constant droning buzz of fluorescent lights. It’s that you don’t remember how you got here, or why, or where you’re going after. You’re stuck in a transitional point, a liminal station being neither here nor there, existing only in the confines of where you were before and where you will be soon. Wherever that may be.

“You shouldn’t think about it too much,” the cashier says, unprompted. “Places like these aren’t meant to be thought about.” It’s the first time you’ve heard him speak. In fact, it’s the first time anyone’s said anything at all since you first entered.

You decide it’s for the best to just pay for your drink and leave.
