People against piracy fail to realize that no, I can’t just ‘buy it.’ They stopped making DVDs and Blu-Rays. They’re barely offering digital copies for download. I am not spending money I could use for food or bills to pay for a subscription service just so I can always have access to a beloved piece of media. Especially not when the service will remove media on a whim without concern for how the loss of access to that piece will make its artistic conservation nigh impossible.
For example, I recently learned that Disney+ had an original film called Crater. It’s scifi, family friendly, and seems cool - I would love to buy it as a holiday gift for my little brother! But: it’s exclusive to D+ and THEY REMOVED IT LITERALLY MONTHS AFTER ITS RELEASE.
The ONLY way I can directly access this film is through piracy. The ONLY available ‘copies’ of this film are hosted on piracy websites. Disney will NEVER release it in theaters, or as something to buy, and it may NEVER return to the streaming service. It will be LOST because we aren’t allowed to purchase it for personal viewing. If I can’t pay to own it, I won’t pay for the privilege of losing it when corporate decides to put it in a vault.
So yes, I’m going to pirate and support piracy.

i'm sure this post has been made before but the "the list of people i trust and things i believe is down to no one and nothing" to "i trust angus mcdonald entirely" journey that taako takes in the span of roughly one in-fiction hour during lunar interlude reunion tour is so important to me. adventuring partners and friends who have saved his bacon more times than he can count? nah fuck em. organization that has protected him and given him a purpose and fresh start? new stone of farspeech who dis. this nerdy ass boy detective? "angus i trust you implicitly and here's the 100% exact truth as we understand it"

guys, can - can we stop saying that percy jackson is an unreliable narrator who thinks he's an idiot? bc like. rereading the books.
he's doesn't??? think he's an idiot????
like sure he'll say things like "echidna.... isn't that a type of anteater?" but he doesn't think that he's himself an idiot for that.
let me quote you the book: "Go ahead, call me an idiot for walking into a strange lady’s shop like that just because I was hungry, but I do impulsive stuff sometimes."
HE doesn't think he's an idiot, but he does assume that YOU, THE READER, will think that. and that's true to his life experience, true to his school experience, true to anyone with a learning disability like his.

OKAY so full list of weird shit that has happened in the TMA circle recently, for people smarter than me to decode. All information correct as of 11/10 (6PM GMT):
TWITTER:
At 5PM on October 10th, the official RQ Twitter posted a single eye emoji (👁). We are Beholding respectfully.
Source: ... The official RQ Twitter.
Tumblr media
{ID - a screenshot of the aforementioned tweet, posted at exactly 5PM, October 10th, 2022. END ID}
INSTAGRAM:
The official RQ Instagram added to their story, showing a gif with two eyes (one of top of the other). The story has since expired (I expect it was posted at the same time as the tweet), and I didn’t think to get a screenshot so for now I have to say...
Source: just trust me besties.
PATREON:
In the latest Patreon mail, under the announcements, there was a string of text, “U3RhdGVtZW50IFJlbWFpbnMK”, which translates to “Statement Remains” in base64.
Source: u/heartydurian on r/TheMagnusArchives
YOUTUBE:
The official RQ playlists for “The Magnus Archives - The Complete Collection” and “The Magnus Archives - The Web Spider Collection” have been updated ‘today’, as of about midday. Neither shows any unlisted videos (save for the Music Making Of from 2020 on the Complete Collection) though there may be private one(s) added. That’s just theorising, though, and nothing is confirmed.
Source: The mentioned RQ playlists on YT
Tumblr media Tumblr media
{ID - the aforementioned youtube playlists, both reading as updated today. The complete collection has 201 videos; the spider playlist has 15. END ID}
SPOTIFY (and other podcatchers):
The description for MAG Goodbye For Now, has been updated to include the following string of text, which it appears no one has yet been able to decode. It does not appear to be base64, and does not seem to be a key/link to anything on Spotify, Youtube, or the RQ website.
“ktOoV6VdMvqVjHIVnPd7″
Of note, this part of the description hasn’t been added to the RQ-hosted version of the episode. It is, however, on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, and all other podcatchers’ descriptions as far as I can see. As a matter of due diligence, I checked, and this addition to the description is at least relatively new. Wayback shows previous instances of the description from earlier this year, where the string is not present.
Source: Spotify, Apple Podcasts, and acast, as well as Wayback Machine snapshots of these sites.

isnt it so interesting and so reflective of being a teenage girl how the yellowjackets collectively and sort of automatically/instinctively assign certain roles to certain members of the group, often roles that involve getting their hands dirty and doing things that are anywhere from gross to ethically questionable to truly morally reprehensible but necessary for their survival, because no one else can stomach it, and then they punish her for acting out the exact same role that they assigned her?

someone should make a tma statement that’s about the house that the 17yo got taken in by the mr spider book and like the house is infested with spiders now and it mentions offhand an old book inside/near the doorstep that looks like it’s been sitting there for decades (but like that isn’t the main focus of the statement idk it can be another web thing) i think it’d be really evil for jon to have to read about that in s1 while still in deep denial

if the thing needs to be powered with a paradox, why not write "this sentence is false" and use that?
Powering the thing isn't a problem. They can already power the machine with any paradox:
Fiddleford pointed at the trash can. "And in here I've recreated the environmental conditions of the Dontium's native paradox universe."
"Amazing," Ford said, crouching down to inspect the pipes. "How did you do that?"
"I stuck a cat in a box and stuck the box in the trash can."
They're gonna switch out Schrödinger's cat for another paradox—but that's the easy part, they're not even concerned about that. They aren't struggling to power it; they're struggling to make it generate fuel. That doesn't require just "a paradox."
"Now! Dontium's properties change dependin' on whether it's observed or not. To synthesize it, it needs to be observed, and not. You followin' so far?" [...] Now, in the paradox universe, I reckon one fella could just doublethink his way into producin' Dontium. But we've got to do it with two brains that are as near to identical as possible. [...]
Fiddleford turned to Ford. "I need you lookin' right at the particle accelerator, at all times, to keep it under observation—but not think about it! [...] "And Stan, I need you to not look at the accelerator at all costs, but don't stop thinkin' about it once. You 'n' Ford's thoughts and non-thoughts will work like the plus 'n' minus poles on a magnet; it'll attract the mental energy outta Ford, into the accelerator between you two, and jump start the matter synthesizin' process."
They need, specifically, for a single person to both observe the experiment without thinking about it and think about it without observing it—or at least something as close as possible to that. "Have two twins do it" isn't as-close-as-possible enough.

there's something so interesting about writing specifically in the genre of horror and tragedy on ao3, a space where the convention is to describe your story via its tropes rather than its genre.
if it's going to end miserably, you often know at the outset in a way that isn't quite like many other ways of experiencing a story, and that's Interesting!
much like the concept of fic itself, you're entering the story knowing the characters and a general plan of the setting, even if the writer's dropped you entirely in medias res and let you read from someplace in the middle. but that worry is already built at the outset, a ratcheting line of checkmarks to be ticked as you read forwards.
...now, I wonder if there's any way to purposefully leverage that to build Dread in the reader's mind even before you begin your tale...

Screenshotting my original post so my addition shows up in the tags.
Two-siding a genocide in your ongoing podcast while an actual real world genocide is going on is WILD.
The humans have been confirmed to be colonizers of land originally inhabited by monsters. They have carried out multiple genocides and forced the monsters out of their homes and into cities on the fringes of the world. Then more human invaders show up to destroy those cities (also the monster cultural centers).
We have confirmation that the city they hit first has been leveled entirely now. The city that Olala was seeking because it contained so much information and history about monster kind.
We've also got political leaders refusing to get involved unless the bombing comes to them, and the monsters being treated as primitive and ineffective against the advanced tech of the off-world humans. This is a really uncomfortable if unintentionally a parallel and actually awful if it is intentional. Best case scenario, it's trying to make a connection between fictional monsters and real life people in a way that's both othering and pretty racist. Worst case, the writers actually believe this is a two side issue and that any attempt to stop Israel is "just as bad" as an ongoing genocide.
Does anyone know if anyone has made any statements? I'm not expecting every creative to do so, but when your work is hitting this close to real world situations, it might be necessary.
