Spock: While the captain expected the concept of a pet to be a novelty to a Vulcan, I surprised him by telling him about my own pet, I-Chaya.

Spock: He was quite enrapt with my stories of playing together, maintaining I-Chaya's dental hygiene, napping in his soft fur.

Spock: Things took a turn, though, when I exited the cabin to approach a beast that looked quite like a sehlat. According to the captain, despite their cuddly appearance, a "grizzly" is much more akin to a wild sehlat– A much more dangerous beast.

Spock: Captain Kirk also forbid me from bringing extra food next time we visit to encourage the "grizzly" to be docile. I must conduct further research.

Spock's pet sehlat was called i-chaya. That's not a name any Vulcan person would have, at least not in line with any of the naming conventions we know about for Vulcans.

So what if i-chaya is a "pet" name, the way humans name an animal "fluffy", "Rover", "boots", etc.

And just like humans can also choose a more human name for their pets, some Vulcans prefer to do that too.

So at a Vulcan veterinary clinic, there's sehlat patients called: I-Chaya, I-Manshi, E-Lalka...and Serik.
