A lot of what nemiroff talks about wrt the commercial success and the cultural memory and space that meaningful works of art hold is so interesting to me in the context of what I see on Broadway forums about dumb shit like Beetlejuice and Six and whatever vs Death of a Salesman and The Piano Lesson and Top Dog/Underdog—even though they all feature all-Black casts etc. And I get it, as someone who instantly dropped a lot of cash to go see funny girl, I want to see spectacle and sparkles and hear big belting songs. But it does feel like a cultural error to not support intelligent art especially when it makes “bold” casting choices like Salesman and The Piano Lesson did.
