Go Nagai was insane for this one
12 Days of Aniblogging 2023, Day 8
I like to always have manga of dubious quality on tap for when I’m having trouble sleeping. Ideally, reading a few chapters will distract me, but I won’t want to stay up late shotgunning volumes. Devilman Lady was the ideal manga for this, and this is maybe the last time anyone will ever describe Devilman Lady as "ideal".
An extremely brief introduction is in order. If Osamu Tezuka is the godfather of manga, then Go Nagai is manga’s weird horny uncle. He’s arguably just as influential, the two of them just moved in different circles, each reifying entire genres. Nagai is more or less responsible for magical girls, super robot, and ecchi, and also spent a lot of time in the sphere of supernatural and post-apocalyptic manga. These are fundamentally genres of extremity and ridiculousness, and Nagai dials every one of his works up to 11 by the end, one way or another. Devilman is probably his most famous work over here, and it’s a stone-cold classic for a reason. Nagai has kept revisiting it over the years, with side stories, alternate universes, manga cameos, and even entirely new series that function as stealth sequels such as Violence Jack. But his most notable attempt is Devilman Lady, which is far more than a simple gender-swap of the original.

Devilman Lady is about swimming deep in filth. It’s easily the most disgust-provoking manga I’ve read, with pretty much every content warning under the sun applicable. This is a truly rotten and conspiratorial world that Nagai is depicting. Societal decay manifests in countless forms, including rape, child abuse, homophobia, militarism, and hatred towards immigrants. Anything that could be potentially understood as fanservice is placed right next to or directly within the atrocities at hand, and it's genuinely unclear how much Nagai intended that as commentary. His intentions throughout this whole manga are a bit of an enigma, but what's clear that he is firing on all cylinders.

This is an extremely zeitgeisty 90’s work, with intelligent design debates, the mapping of the human genome, new age paranoia, religious zealotry, and anxiety over pollution all playing out on the pages. Where it breaks from many of its contemporaries is a decisive rejection of the end of history. This is the kind of thing you write when you’re still reeling from the subway sarin gas attacks and your country's role in the Gulf War and subsequent militarization. It’s the perfect manga for capturing a time period when ten to twenty percent of Japan’s population were estimated to have belonged to a new religious movement.

The punchline to all of this is that he doesn’t know how to draw women.
By the back half of Devilman Lady, Nagai’s depictions of hellscapes and grotesque monsters reach near-Berserk levels of detail and technical competency. And yet his female protagonists are still drawn in a drastically simpler 70's style, only now with giant spheres grafted to their chests. Either humans and the infernal are two completely different skillsets, or this was a deliberate artistic decision, and both are difficult to swallow. Either way, we just have to accept the juxtapositions.

The finale is just nuts. Go Nagai makes textual the homoeroticism and gender deviance of the original Devilman manga, as the world burns in both nuclear warfare and demonic hellfire. The story starts accelerating at an unfathomable pace, the most inscrutable double mobius reacharound yaoiyuri occurs, and the universe resets once or twice. It makes the endings of Jojo Part 6 and 7 look tame by comparison. There is no way to parse this like a normal manga with a plot and narrative. It is raw id.

This has been a year where I’ve tried to deliberately broaden my comfort zone by engaging with more potentially upsetting works if I think they'll have something interesting to say. This was like jumping into the deep end. Devilman Lady may very well be Go Nagai’s magnum opus. It’s not nearly as tight as the original manga, but it’s a glorious mess, just as radical to its own time as Devilman must have been in the 70s. It made for spectacular insomnia reading. And there’s no way in hell I can ever recommend it.
At age 19, Nagai went through a bout of diarrhea so bad that he convinced himself it was colon cancer, and that he was at death's door. He vowed to leave something behind for the world to remember him by, and began laboring away on manga. And for the last 60 years of his career, he’s written and drawn with the fervor of a man who’s about to shit himself to death. Maybe that’s the real secret.

Trying to decipher Step by Step timeline
and failing.
This is just my takeaway from what we have seen so far. Lot of the timeframe I am assuming here are from their office work and Ae's pregnancy
episode 1: we learn Pat is a fresh recruit. It's only been a month since he joined Jian group so he is still in probationary period.

He has another 8 months till becomes a regular employee. Most company will keep their recruits in probationary period from anywhere between 2 months to a year. So in Jian Pat's probationary period is 9 months....like Ae's pregnancy

Side note: I never put this together but Pat did his internship at Ae and Beam's company.

Episode 2: A lot has happened. Pat is not having the best time with new Manager Jeng and at the very end when he is preparing to resign he gets a notification to do a peer review on Jeng. Usually peer review frequency varies from company to company but most perform theirs at the end of the quarter. Some mncs will perform peer reviews twice in one quarter, one being at the beginning and another one at the end. So that being said Jeng has to have been the manager for a few months for Pat to give such scathing review.

Ok, so it's Q1. Which would mean this somewhere between January-March

episode 3: The peer review is sent and Pat is stresses so by the end of this episode he has prepared his resignation letter. I don't know how to read Thai but google translator tells me this is dated February 2023.

episode 4: no specific date for me to follow but Forge project is in it's presentation stage + finalizing production company for ads.
episode 5: Jeng's dad's ultimatum, so Jeng has till the end of 23 to show progress for his department or his Dad is shutting it down

episode 6: nothing specific on the time. Put asks for a second chance
episode 7: lmao! I wish! But yes some companies do be giving maternity leave from 3 months to a year. But there is also the issue of paid, non-paid maternity leave which is a whole other thing.

From the looks of it Ae is not that far into her pregnancy???? So she might be waiting to take that leave later.

episode 8: Pat and Put have broken up. Ae's bump isn't that visible sitting in the middle but it's there.

episode 9: now we have some specific time again. Both of Pat's parents are visiting him to celebrate his birthday. Which is October 31st

We don't know exactly how far along Ae is. But it's the end of October and she found out she was pregnant in episode 5 so maybe in March/April!!!

Pat has his birthday and with that we are entering November. One last peer review perhaps? lol. Jeng has to show his dad significant change in the department but he is leaving Jian and looking for his replacement.

4-1 Challenge
IM DOING IT!!!! I am participating in the 4-1 Challenge written by my friends @turtle-babe83 @thelaundrybitch @tmnt-tychou @post-apocalyptic-daydream @leosgirl82 and @nittleboo (whose account for some reason won't let me tag it 🙃)
This isn't an 'x reader' fic but it is hilarious, I hope you enjoy!!!!!
Warnings: um so technically this is 18+ because it talks heavily about sex and there may or may not be a teeny tiny "smut" scene at the end, well I can't even call it that, but sexy times are heavily implied. (If you don't like smut it's under the '~~~~~' line so just skip that part if it makes you uncomfortable)

Casey Jones had been a loyal and trusting friend of the turtles for over a year now.
He helped them with the Kraang and promised to keep their secret. He was funny, a stubborn piece of shit, and their best friend.
He often picked up takeout for them and rented movies and even went out super late with the guys to play some basketball at an abandoned court.
About two or three weeks ago, Caseys buildings washing machine finally hit the bucket, the old machine was dead and no amount of faith or new parts could bring it back.
Even Donnie had looked at it and agreed it was dead.
At first April had offered her buildings machine, and he agreed for a little bit, then when the water bill got a little too high for her liking, the boys stepped up and offered him their machine.
Now Mikey was sneaking up to the surface after dinner and rushing to Casey's place.
Mikey had misplaced his favorite pair of boxes and he was sure it got mixed in with Casey's laundry.
Casey had agreed that Mikey could look through his basket that he had yet to put away.
He lived about 15 minutes from the lair, but with a rocket board it took 8 ½ minutes. He landed on the fire escape with a quiet thud and slid the living room window open.
"Case? You home?" Mikey peered around, stomping his feet on the mat he had placed under the window. "Don't freak out dude, its just Mikey," He called again, still not getting an answer.
Maybe he stepped out for a minute? Or maybe he just went to the bathroom?
Mikey shrugged sauntering through the rookie detectives apartment and opening his bedroom door. At the foot of the bed was a tall gray laundry basket filled with clean clothes.
Without thinking twice, Mikey started rummaging through the clothes. He saw a lot of cool band t-shirts that he wish he could steal, several pairs of very tight pants and boring black boxer briefs.
After dumping out and sorting through the whole basket, Mikey stepped back with a huff. Hands on his hips he throught for a moment, this basket was from just the other day, his underwear has been missing for over 5 days.....so he must've put them away thinking they were his!!!
In his text, Casey had said he had full permission to go through his laundry, so that clearly must mean the stuff in his dresser.
Having no shame, Mikey went up to Casey's dresser and started opening all the drawers. When he found the socks and underwear drawer he pawed through them, his underwear was a bright color so it should be easy to spot.
But something else caught his attention, as he moved a few pairs out of the way, something.....lacy.....hit his hand. Pulling out said underwear made Mikey stop, holding the pair between his two pointer fingers.
These were April's. He knew that because one time April had started her period while he was over and had texted asking for a new pair. Mikey -having no idea what a period was- had grabbed this exact thong.
Why was it in Casey's dress-
"JESUS, MIKE!" Casey yelped, coming into the room, not expecting to see the youngest turtle. "Don't scare me like that, dude," He laughed, running a hand over his hair.
Casey's smile dropped when he saw what exactly Mikey was doing....and holding.
"Why do you have a pair of her panties in your dresser?"
"WHY ARE YOU IN MY DRESSER?!"
Mikey glanced at Casey, never had he seen him so startled, his eyes were wide and his face bright red.
He hoped the underwear was an accident, maybe something leftover from when he used April's machine a week ago, but it was clear the only mistake was someone finding them.
"Are you-?!" Mikey gasped, dropping the thong to the floor like it was poisoned, hands covering his large mouth.
"Mike, I can explain-" Casey took a step into the room.
"Have you and April-?!" Came Mikeys muffled question, still not removing his hands. He couldn't bring himself to ask the question.
Casey cringed, looking away, he wasn't sure how but Casey turned an even darker red.
"Oh my god, you guys still are?!" Mikeys hands slid up his face to cover his eyes, he turned away from Casey, groaning as if he were in pain.
"Alright just....just listen, Mikey-"
"You banged my sister?!" Mikey all but screamed, Casey sighed, running a hand down his face.
"Whose bangin' whose sister?" Casey's stomach dropped hearing Raphs voice in the living room.
He slowly turned, seeing the giant red behemoth standing about ten feet away, stomping his shoes on the mat by the window.
"Raph, what're you doing here?" Casey quickly asked, leaning on the doorframe, preventing him from entering.
"Leo sent me out to get Mikey, if he's not back soon he's gonna miss Splinters evenin' training," Raph shrugged, coming up to Casey, looking over his shoulder at a very distressed Mikey.
"What happened with him?" Raph jutted his chin toward Mikey, Casey stumbled, feeling himself start to sweat.
"HE'S BANGING APRIL!"
Casey saw his life flash before his eyes. Looking up at the largest of his four friends, April's confidant and biggest brother, and his best friend.
He saw the recognition flash across his green eyes and the scowl form on his face.
"You're what?!"
"I-I can explain, cause there's more than that-" Casey took a step back wanting to put space between them, but Raph stepped with him, entering his bedroom.
"There's more?!" Both turtles yelled.
"Can you guys please stop yelling, you're going to wake up the neighbors," Casey took a deep breath, turning so he could face both brothers.
"I can explain, and the truth is.....the truth is that....April and I are dating," Casey started rubbing his sweaty hands together, unable to meet their eyes. "We've kinda been flirting for a while now and things really took a turn about three or four months ago."
"So April letting you use her washing machine was just a rouse?" Raph crossed his arms, throwing daggers with his eyes.
"She did that because she's a good person," Casey argued. Both turtles raised an eyebrow ridge which made Casey back down. "Alright, yeah kinda, we're both busy with work sometimes and it was a good reason that wouldn't be suspicious if you guys caught us in her apartment,"
"Wow," Raph murmered, hand covering his mouth as he sighed heavily.
Casey stared expectantly at the turtle before him, he knew he was going to snap.
"Well I guess that only leaves one option left," Raph didn't meet Casey's eyes but the rookie knew he was addressing him. He spoke far to calm for what was being discussed.
"Which is?" Casey knew the moment the words left his mouth that he was fuc-
"I'M GONNA KICK YOUR ASS CASEY!" Raphs fist swung fast, but Casey had been around long enough to know when to duck. He just narrowly missed his friends fist and ducked into the living room.
"Wait, wait, Raph!" Casey tripped over his coffee table, landing on the hardwood floor. "Let's talk about this!"
Raph stepped heavily out of his bedroom, eyes in a permanent glare, he cracked his knuckles as he stepped toward him.
"Raph, just-" Casey couldn't bring his legs to stand back up, instead just scooting back on the floor.
As if the universe was truly trying to punish him, Casey's apartment doors lock started to rattle, and both men turned to see the one and only April opening the door.
"Hey, baby, I got food-" She unlocked the door with her personal key, a wide smile on her face, large brown bag of takeout in her arms. Seeing her boyfriend and brother in the living room made her smile drop instantly. "What's going on?"
"'What's going on?' What's going on?! You wanna know what's going on?!" Raphs voice rose as he redirected toward the reporter. "What's going on is I just found out that my best friend," He spat the word out through gritted teeth, glancing back at Casey before turning back to April. "Is.....is doing my sister!"
April raised an eyebrow, raising a single finger to Raph. "Watch your tone," Raph sighed heavily, lowering his shoulders. No matter how hard any of them tried, no one could 'out Alpha' April.
April sighed and gave a small chuckle in relief, clearly worried the boys were fighting about something much worse. She set the bag of takeout on the counter as Mikey slowly walked out of Casey's bedroom and stood beside Raph.
"So you guys found out...." She made eye contact with all three men, putting her hands on her hips, unsure of how to have this conversation.
"Yeah, I found your thong in his drawer," Mikey piped up.
April glanced down at Casey who was still sitting on the floor. "You took my underwear?"
"It isn't an important part of this argument," Casey blushed hard, angrily whispering and not meeting her eyes.
April rolled her eyes and turned back to her brothers. "Yes, Casey and I are dating, and I know this is unexpected, but it's my decision and, you know, I'm -surprisingly- really happy. I know it's going to take some getting used to, but please know that I wouldn't be with him if he was a genuine asshole,"
Both brothers lowered their heads, they knew she was right, April could handle herself and they would just have to learn to get over it.
Raph spared one last glance at Casey. "Break her heart I break your face," and with that he promptly turned and left for the window.
"That went better than I was expecting," April happily clapped her hands together, turning to the youngest brother with a smile. "Do you wanna get some food for the road?"
Mikey chuckled, maybe April and Casey dating wouldn't be so bad....

About three hours later after Splinters evening training and eating the food April gave him, Mikey was back on the surface heading for Casey's apartment.
In the mix of the argument, Mikey completely forgot about his underwear. But thankfully it was still relatively early so Casey should still be up.
Like before Mikey opened the window, and just headed right for the closed bedroom door.
"Hey, don't freak out, Case, you're not going to believe it but I forgot to grab my underwear earlier-" Mikey swung the door open and for the first time in his life wished he had patience and the ability to remember to knock.
April was laying on her back -thankfully under a blanket- but let out a loud scream at seeing Mikey, yanking the blanket to cover her chest. And while he couldn't see him, the large lump in the blanket in between April's knees was evidence enough that Mikey should just leave.
He slammed the door closed, covering his eyes. "I am so sorry!"
"What's wrong with you!?"
"Would it kill you to knock?!"
Those were the only things Mikey heard before rushing back out the window.
Maybe them dating was a bad thing.

Ima go into more depth for my question, make it less generic and maybe easier to answer 😅
Do you do most of your studying (per subject) mostly at one time (breaks included ofc) ? As in, if you studied say for 4 hours, would that be in smaller increments throughout the day or more pomodoro-like for those 4 hours?
And how do you usually fill up that study time; make notes, past papers, use flashcards..?

hii!!! thank u for the question :) normally, i do not do four hours in one go. the only time i’d do that is if i went to the library and i don’t do that very often, maybe like once or twice a month. on the weekends i spread out my revision through the day, like 8-10, 12-2, 6-8 etc etc. i love long breaks. i need time to recover and let my mind do what it wants for a bit!
on the weekdays, i actually have really large free periods in school that are about 90 minutes long and sometimes i have them twice in one day. on mondays and tuesdays my frees are 10:30 - 12:15 and then 1-2:30 so i get a decent amount done in them :) i don’t use pomodoro, personally it takes me such a long amount of time to get concentrated that if i did 25/5 i’d spend 15 mins getting focused but then suddenly be on a break that is too short — then have to refocus again!
sometimes my study is making notes/ flashcards but that’s quite a quick task for me so normally i’m learning them. especially since all my flashcards from first year are completed!
i find mindmaps (my main form of notes) are great for understanding the subject and flashcards are great for remembering — so i use them both while studying.
i’ve been doing this method for about three years now so i’ve built the skill up over time!

5. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?
I try to respond to all comments. I don't quite get them all - but I try. Fic is about community, and I've made so many friends through Ao3 comments (including the lovely person who tagged me~)
6. What's the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
Not even a toss up. It's The Gladiator Games, where I slaughter, one by one, all the Heroes of Olympus.
7. What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
As I skim my list of fics, I find I'm not very into happy endings. I'm into hopeful endings, which I don't think are necessarily the same thing. I think I have to go with By Her Side, which, even though I've written a dozen Ladybug identity reveals, I think is the happiest. Even that one, though, ends on the hope that they can keep it this time, rather than reset the world like they've had to before.
8. Do you get hate on fics?
The closest I got to hate was people bitching at the HP AU for including Wolfstar (or for not including wolfstar, which is fucking funny tbh), and one or two people who complained that it wasn't different enough from canon or interesting enough. But, if the AU had not had such a lovely, kind, wonderful reception by folks overall, I probably never would have finished it.
9. Do you write smut. If so, what kind?
I do write smut. I enjoy writing smut. I like paralleling emotional vulnerability to physical vulnerability. I used to write really kinky smut but I've become less enamored with writing it in the last few years -- that said I do still come back to my Percy/Annabeth/Piper/Jason fic that is kinky as all hell.
10. Do you write crossovers? What's the craziest one you've written?
I don't know that it can be found anymore, but I used to have a Rise of the Brave Tangled Dragons at Hogwarts fic. No idea if I orphaned or deleted it. I had all 7 years outlined. It was credited on Rise of the Brave Tangled Dragons wikis, links all broken now. I think only managed to write 3 of them before I quit the whole thing.
11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?
At least twice people have tried posting the HP AU on Wattpad or Ao3 as their own. Which is... an odd choice. Like, I'm not fandom famous, but it's a pretty distinctive fic. Both got taken down fairly quickly.
12. Have you ever had a fic translated?
Yes! Some old, orphaned DCU smut got translated into Chinese. The HP AU has been translated into both Portuguese and German.
13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?
I used to co-write in school. I had a series that a former friend and I were collabing on, but we wrote fully different time periods in a series. I've never had a full fic co-written. Though, arguably, my beta team poured as much blood sweat and tears into the HP AU as I did, helping with everything from plot outlines to character developments to final grammar touches.
14. What's your all-time favourite ship?
Percabeth. Something about them is just... so precious to me. I want them happy so badly.
15. What's a WIP you want to finish, but doubt you ever will?
Wisdom's Daughter Walks Alone... I know the ending. It's one more chapter. I should just write it. But I can't seem to make myself do it.
16. What are your writing strengths?
Dialogue. No questions asked. I love it and I'm good at it. It was the most consistent positive feedback I got throughout screenwriting and writing courses in school - I've always been very good at distinctive character voices.
17. What are your writing weaknesses?
Plot. Is it not enough for a story to be vibes? (If you want to know why I love AUs, Remixes, and songfic/poem frames - it's because I cannot think of an original problem to save my life. I can only borrow others'.)
18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language for a fic?
Like all writing, it should be intentional. But, like all fanfic, it's just for fun so do whatever you want. Ultimately, when you write for others, you write to communicate a thought or idea. Writing is telepathy, as Steven King said. So using words from another language is just another set of tools in your belt to communicate an idea. Know your audience and communicate your idea well.
19. First Fandom you wrote for?
Very first ever? Kingdom Hearts. First written and published was Inuyasha. I am... old.
20. Favourite fic you've ever written?
All the ones I love, I love for different reasons. It's a hard question to answer, when each fic has served a different season in my life. I think I'm just going to pick 3, not necessarily because they are my favorites, but because they are the most vulnerable I have ever been in my writing. So, I don't know if I would say they're my favorite, but they have the most of me in them. 1. A Game of Scars and Secrets 2. Thicker than Water 3. Roots

Tagged by @what_alchemy and am finally getting around to answering!
1) The last book I read:
Last one I finished was Linda Tirado's Hand to Mouth: Living in Bootstrap America. Most of the nonfiction I read is well done but not super cheerful. Anyway, if you don't already know how much it sucks to be poor in America, it'll give you a bit more insight into why this country Is How It Is, etc.
2) A book I recommend:
I recommended the His Dark Materials series to someone recently, as a sprawling fantasy series that would entertain a teenage girl but also their parent. This may have been the first book I read that had Canonical Gay Love in it, lmao.
3) A book that I couldn’t put down:
There There by Tommy Orange. The voices and relationships were so compelling that I couldn't stop reading until I knew what happened.
4) A book I’ve read twice (or more):
More than half of the books I own are ones I've read twice or more, haha. Hm. Let's list: Good Omens, Sense and Sensibility, Love Medicine, Wishful Drinking, On Writing....there are more but I'm visually blanking on the various sections of my bookshelf and everything I've ever read.
5) A book on my TBR:
What isn't on my TBR? The stacks are endless, but I just picked up Woman of Light by Kali Fajardo-Anstine during a period of insomnia. So far I like it.
6) A book I’ve put down:
Too many to count, lmao. Sometimes I go through phases where I'll pick them back up because it wasn't the right time for me to read that thing. Mostly the ones that I don't like stay unfinished. I'll give it a couple of chapters, maybe.
7) A book on my wish list:
Sharp Objects is one I've meant to read forever and still have never opened. Does that count?
8) A favorite book from childhood:
L.M. Montgomery's Anne of Green Gables series, but especially Anne of Windy Poplars and Anne of Ingleside, because I loved the idea of the baby Blythe kids having all these rural Canadian adventures. Also: Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier. If you know me it's less weird that I was reading all of these over and over in the same year.
9) A book you would give to a friend:
Depends on the friend! IMO, I don't have an automatic go-to book or author. I think the last book I gave as a gift was actually to my dad for Christmas -- Octavia Butler's Parable of the Sower and Parable of the Talents. Also feel like I also do more book swaps with people, rather than gifting.
10) A book of poetry or lyrics that you own
Many poetry books in my house. The most recent poetry anthology I bought was When the Light of the World Was Subdued, Our Songs Came through because I love seeing what Indigenous poets do with form and style. Also picked up Fugitive/Refuge (Philip Metres) and Ancient Light (Kimberly Blaeser) at AWP this year, among others.
11) A nonfiction book you own:
Just bought Coming Out Republican: A History of the Gay Right because the author was interviewed in a newsletter I read regularly. Also: what are gay white men even doing being Republicans, etc.
12) What are you currently reading:
Ulysses, by James Joyce. And Moby Dick, although I'm not even out of the first third of the book yet.
13) What are you planning on reading next?
I have a collection by Mary Gaitskill that keeps itching at me, as well as a giant pile from AWP. Also think I'll be reading Beautyland, by Marie-Helene Bertino, very soon.

1 – How many works do you have on AO3?
Okay, so, I actually have two ao3 accounts. One I don't use anymore and one I do currently. So I'm gonna count both of them
In total, it's at least 41. (14 on my current account, 24 on the old one, and there's 3 fics I've written that have since been orphaned that I remember having written)
2 – What's your total AO3 word count?
Roughly 150,549, but that's only from the unorphaned works, so it's gonna be a few thousand more, probably more like 152-155k
3 – What fandoms do you write for?
Currently just cotl, but I've written for a bunch of fandoms over the years, like mcyt, tgcf, mha, and a couple other fandoms, although those are the ones I've posted to ao3. Wattpad, where I started tho? Lot more lmao
4 – What are your top five fics by kudos?
I plead the fifth
5 – Do you respond to comments?
Yes!! I try to respond to every single comment I get, I appreciate and love my commenters so much <3
6 – What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
I don't remember the name of it, but it was a fic from my old account. I typically don't do angsty endings, so it's rare for me to do
7 – What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
Pretty much all of them aldhsha except a few with more ambiguous endings (sorry I'm being so vague)
8 – Do you get hate on fics?
Not that I've seen, no.
9 – Do you write smut? If so, what kind?
I've written smut like. 4-5 times in my life (default poses in asexual), and only 2 of them are published to ao3. I have NO CLUE what "kind" of smut it is, but people on both works have described it as "tender" so ig that'll work

I do nawt like crossovers much, so I don't write them. Closest I do is aus based off or set in another media's universe, but there's no character meetups

Yes! My biggest fic on my old account has been translated a least once or twice (with my permission)

Hmmmmmmm. Idk actually, my favorites shift with time. Currently it's narilamb, but it was ineffable husbands a few months ago. We'll see how it changes again in the future

Got a couple wips for good omens and mtp but idk if I'll ever finish them, they be sitting
16 – What are your writing strengths?
I've been told my characterizations have been a strong point while reading, but I wouldn't count that as a WRITING strength. I think, to me, my writing strength is setting up an environment
17 – What are your writing weaknesses?
Pacing and endings. I struggle with them every single time.
18 – Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?
I love it! I wish wish I knew more than English so I'd be comfy doing it myself (bc relying on online translators doesn't seem like a good idea slshs)

On ao3? I think mha?? Not sure I must have started posting ao3 fics over 5 years ago at this point (first fandom I wrote for period? Creepypasta fandom, on quotev.)

As of rn, maybe "of Harvest, of Celebration, and of Rest". I was so proud of it when I finished, and I love it :]

1. Are you named after anyone? 
I was adopted at 18 months and never met my biological mother after that so I have no way of knowing; my adoptive parents didn’t change my first or middle names. 
2. When was the last time you cried? 
I always cry during period week. And every time I watch Encanto. 
3. Do you have kids? 
Not yet! My husband and I do want at least one kid, though. Maybe two! Not yet, though. 
4. Do you use sarcasm a lot? 
Only for friends that like sarcasm. If I don’t know someone well enough to know their sense of humor yet or I know they don’t like sarcasm then I don’t use it around them. I enjoy it but it’s situational for me. 
5. What sports do you play / have you played? 
I was in marching band in high school, and when I was little I took ballet classes, though I didn’t stay in those long enough to graduate to pointe shoes. idk if those count as sports but that’s the only physical activities I did growing up. Nowadays I just do weights and jogging. 
6. What’s the first thing you notice about other people? 
Personality, vibe checks, & whether or not I wanna actually talk to them or just be polite and yeet out of there. 
7. Eye color? 
Greyish-blue! Sometimes tealish. It depends on the lighting and what I’m wearing. But usually a light turquoise blue-grey color. 
8. Scary Movies or Happy Endings? 
While I love classic horror and occult halloweeny things, I love fairy tales more, so happy endings wins! Also I dislike all the modern horror stuff that’s a bunch of gore and jump scares and violence. I prefer horror that’s 80s or older. But I love all fairy tale movies no matter when they’re made! 
9. Any special talents? 
My long-term memory is abnormally good. I can vividly remember back to kindergarten. However, my short term memory is crap. I’m always losing my phone. 😅

11. What are your hobbies? 
Playing Sims and being on Simblr (obviously) but I also like a couple MMORPGs that I play with my guild. I’m also in the choir at my Unitarian Universalist church, and I still play Flute and Bodhrán privately. I’ve been meaning to join a local drum circle but haven’t dedicated the time to that yet. 
12. Do you have any pets? 
Yes! I have 2 cats, Abigail and Tigger, and they’re mother and son! Though if we’re counting my mom’s & mi suegra’s pets as well then we have a total of 6 pets in the family. My mom has 3 cats, Little One, Midnight, and Dev (all are rescued strays ♡) and my husband’s family has a yorkie named Toby. 💕  and that puppy is mad spoiled they have baby strollers for him and take him everywhere! 😂 
13. How tall are you? 
In freedom metrics I’m 5′4″ 
14. Favorite subject in school? 
I always liked music / band the most! When you’re in marching band it consumes your entire life. The rehearsals are so long. But that’s where all my friends were so it was amazing. 💖 
15. Dream job? 
I flunked out of college twice, I’ve kind of given up on any type of careers. My husband is able to support us and I just get part time things when I’m able. Once we have kids I plan on being a stay-at-home mom, and if USA doesn’t fix the violence in schools problem we’ve been having by the time our future kiddos are ready for school I’ll probably homeschool at least the early elementary years. Though once the math gets too advanced for me to be able to teach I’ll need to look for other options ‘cuz I can’t homeschool the whole K~12. Hopefully we can get some kind of education reform by that time.

PT. 1 - The Sallow Twins (Sebastian POV)

Summary
The shy August wind needles through the greenery, but to Sebastian Sallow, it is the irksome tick of a clock. A year, that's how long he has to find a way to cure his sister's curse. A powerful relic, the Promissum Mortis, is hidden in Hogwarts' Room of Requirement, and Sebastian is desperate to find it.

Sebastian | Feldcroft, Late August, 1893.
Curls of steams slink over the bathtub's lid. The heady aroma of wisterias reels Sebastian Sallow out of his daze.
He blinks once, twice, and his mother's warmth winnows away.
The washroom's air is thick with moisture. The wooden floorboards drink the flood water avidly.
With an irritated sigh, Sebastian dispels the Everstream Chalice and catches it before it falls to the floor.
Beneath a blanket of mist, his twin sister, Anne, sleeps soundly. She must've dozed off as he hummed the lullaby their mother used to sing:
Under the willow, where thrushes peep;
I will lay your heart to sleep.
Under the elm, where dreams take flight;
I will guard you through the night.
In this enchanted, moonlit glen;
Rest, my loves, till morn again.
Has he been gone for long?
His mouth is pasty with thirst, his mind, cottony with confusion.
Again, Malisect warped his sense of time despite Garreth Weasley's promises. The red-head's words swim up Sebastian's mind.
Some memories are more worthwhile than others, wouldn't you agree? What's sacrificing the gestation period of the Thestrals for another taste of your first kiss?
It isn't his first kiss, Sebastian revisits over and over again. It's the feeling of his mother's arms around his shoulders as they rode the carriage back from Hogsmeade.
Under the grip of Malisect, he can smell the dust sidling through the heap of books his mother hoarded in the compartment, he can sense the calidity of the summer dusk tease a lash of sweat on his nape, he can breathe the Plumeria and orange blossom fragrance of the oil his mother rubs into her hair, he can feel her heart pulse steadily against the boning of her corset.
She is alive.
Her scent grows, her warmth eddies, her research rattles in the compartment with each tremor of the wheel.
In this version of reality, she still has a future, no matter how immediate and limited it is.
It is so easy to sacrifice your own to give the dead a moment of respite from the permanent stillness.
Maybe his mother, too, can revisit these moments when he does.
The swirls of mist clear little by little, and Sebastian looks at his sister.
Anne's hair tendrils around her face; strands of golden brown locks that make her look every bit like an angel. Beneath the water, her lithe frame is immobile, frozen in time.
Sebastian hikes on his knees without a care for the damp circles the water-logged planks leave on his trousers.
She is beautiful in the clutch of slumber.
She is free.
No blustering pain, no spiny curse gnawing its way into her navel or noosing around her neck.
She is like a princess of yore, locked in her glass coffin, and perhaps Sebastian should award her this small mercy.
He palms his wand; the tip stopping inches away from the steaming surface.
"Avada—"
The incantation calcifies in his throat.
He has to mean it; he knows.
How many vials of Malisect would he need to swallow to relive moments with her if she was gone?
Weasley would have to slave in the potion's class for the brunt of his life if he hoped to satiate Sebastian's cravings.
No.
Anne needs to live.
And full of life she is, despite her peaceful inertia.
From where he stands, Sebastian can make the soft veer of her chest, the tiny ripples it sends along the surface, the whorls of steam she pushes away with her breath.
He lets his eyes wander to the slants and valleys of her body, to the pit of her sharp collarbone, constellated with freckles, the outline of her small, flecked breasts, the pinkish blooms of her nipples, and he stops his course there, wondering if any boy has rolled them between his fingers or sucked them between his lips.
Heart caroming against his ribs, Sebastian ventures a look across the white, silky expanse of her abdomen. His gaze beaches, for a while, on the reef of her hip. It catches in the nest of curls between her thighs, and his mind teems with images that aren't his to conjure.
He imagines a faceless boy dragging his thumb against her navel, then drawing circles in the crux of her hip, bound ever lower until he lands where the heat simmers. A finger slips inside, and the boy feeds her knuckles until her breath hitches. Then he pushes some more, wearing her tattered while her nails dig away into his back.
A loud thud resounds outside, and ripples churn the vision away. Sebastian gasps out of his trance as Anne startles awake.
"The towel," she says, panic bleeding through her eyes. She stands and Sebastian wraps it around her, rubbing her shoulders with his hands. "Sebastian..."
"What?"
Her eyes ream with white. "Leave. Now. Before uncle Solomon sees you."
Sighing, he grabs his wand and scrambles for his empty vials of Malisect before stuffing them into his pockets, then throws the door open. The mildewed air of the cottage claws its way into his throat.
Solomon is in the garden, wrestling with the water pump, and judging by the ruckus, he is in a despicable mood.
A single apple rests on the chopping block, its skin flecked with bruises. Sebastian cuts it in quarters, then sets it on a plate. In a cupboard, amidst a colony of breadcrumbs, he finds a dusty preserves jar of beets; wrapped in a linen rag, spoils a wedge of hard cheese. All of it, Sebastian arranges in a miserly pantomime of a dinner.
Soon, his last school year at Hogwarts will begin.
Soon, he'll be able to treat his sister to a proper meal, but for now, it'll have to do.
When Anne joins him in the kitchen, he is sitting at the table, before the silverware his parents used to dust for the Yule feast, the one his uncle Solomon still hasn't sold for a handful of Galleons.
He will soon enough, Sebastian knows it. His uncle has appraised most of his parents' heirlooms.
Anne gives a surprised smile. "What's all this for?"
Sebastian shrugs. "Can't say I never did anything nice for you."
A brow hikes up her forehead. "Practicing your good deeds for the House cup, brother?"
"The House cup is for star-eyed first years. I've long outgrown this childish competition."
Anne sits at the table, a smirk etched on her chin. "Have you outgrown Quidditch, too? I sure would enjoy to be spared from your whining every time Slytherin takes a bashing."
"Don't you get it, Anne?" He asks with a feigned offense. "I have to pretend like I care about Quidditch. Finding common interests is how you make friends, and having friends is like... Well... I guess it means you're a likeable person."
"Sure, Sebastian."
Sebastian says nothing else, careful not to err too close to all the things she misses so painfully.
She eats in silence, her gaze set on an invisible point in front of her. Through the fabric of her slip, Sebastian spies the shape of her breasts.
Will she ever know the youthful thrills he has?
Staying out past curfew, the lick of rebellion curling up your spine? Drinking until the walls shiver and the stars dip and the ground soars to meet you? Sliding your tongue past someone's lips to taste the sweetness of young love and feel like the world has stopped to take a breath?
The door swings open and Solomon drops a bundle of firewood next to the entryway with a groan.
His coal-black eyes hook on Sebastian, basting through each of his sutures in search of malice.
Sebastian raises a brow. "Need a hand?"
"Shouldn't you be on your way to Hogwarts?" Solomon asks curtly. "It's a long way on foot. You'll miss your ceremony."
"I've attended seven already. They're always the same."
"I heard there's a new student," Anne says. "An eighth year."
And a transfer from Kyiv's Winter College at that, but Sebastian has kept it under wraps, to avoid flaunting it in his sister's face.
He knows she has long resigned herself to her fate, but as his last year looms upon him, he knows it casts a taller shadow on his sister.
She will never attend graduation now. Next year, she will be far too old for it.
Knife in hand, Solomon endeavors to cut the branches from the logs and Sebastian rises to help him.
The vials clink in his pocket.
Enough to arouse his uncle's suspicions who unspools his spine slowly.
"Sebastian, is it what I think it is?"
Sebastian's palm closes around his pocket. "Galleons, that's all. I saved up for a new alembic after Ominis broke mine."
Color leaches from Anne's cheeks. She knows it's a lie, of course, but she says nothing.
"Don't lie to me," Solomon says, inching closer. "Turn out your pockets. Show me what's in them."
Sebastian angles out of his uncle's grasp, nearing the door.
Solomon's eyes are two pits of ire. "You've been using Malisect again?"
"You forgot to feed us most nights," Sebastian rasps. "I don't know why you care what I ingest."
Solomon presses forward, his knuckles blanching around the hilt of his knife. "Don't speak to me like this!"
"And don't pretend like you have a say in what I do," Sebastian hisses. "You kicked me out, remember? I was only here to look after Anne while you were gone. You shouldn't leave her alone for so long."
His cheeks burn. He wants to feel his wand between his fingers. He itches to speak the words, to see his uncle hit the ground, his lips noiseless forever.
But he thinks of Anne, who stares at them, utterly terrorized.
Solomon creeps closer. "I warned you not to use while you were under my roof."
In response, Sebastian rears until he stands under the watery sunlight. "Well, I'm no longer under your roof. Happy?"
"If I see a vial near my house, I'll report you to the headmaster. Am I clear?"
Sebastian doesn't even return the compliment of acknowledging his uncle's threat. Instead he whirls away, jaw clenched, and begins to walk toward the center of Feldcroft until he hears the door slam.
Feldcroft is silent, the villagers slowly retiring to their houses. Streamlets of smoke purl from chimneys and the scent of meat braids through the air. A shy August wind needles through the shrubbery. The stench of stale waters wings up from the well.
Sebastian hates this place.
After this year, he will become someone. An Auror, perhaps. Or a researcher, like his parents. He will spirit Anne away from this miserly village and live with her where nothing can touch her.
Something squeezes inside his chest.
He has a year to find what he seeks in Hogwarts. Nine months, and not one more, to find the Promissum Mortis—Death's Promise—and whisk Anne away from Solomon.
As the wind picks up, it carries the smells of September along with it.
Sebastian sets to walking.
The vials of Malisect chink softly in his pockets.
His mother will have to wait.
Anne, too.
Time is a merciless master and Sebastian, its most piteous slave.

Key concepts
Malisect: Malisect is a drug that enables the user to visit their fondest memories by holding onto a memento. For some users, this memento can take the form of a nursery rhyme, a scent, the feel of an object, etc. Malisect has been invented by Garreth Weasley, in 1891, when he was a sixth year student at Hogwarts.

Since it doesn't sit right with me to write very dark stuff about minors, I decided to introduce an eighth year at Hogwarts. Therefore, all the characters are eighteen of age, which is the age of majority (at least in my country).

A Short Reclist for Short Cdramas
This year I've been watching a lot more cdramas! Especially compared to last year, where I finished like... two cdramas? and DNFed every other one I started? I was wondering why I've had such an easier time watching cdramas and actually finishing them this year and I realized. It's very simple. It's because the cdramas I've been watching have been shorter.
Now honestly if you added up all the cdrama episodes I've watched this year, you might say I could as easily have finished longer cdramas--but listen. It's not just about what time I have, it's about how much time I'm willing to commit to a single cdrama. It's about being on episode 10 of a show I'm kind of into and not having to ask myself, would I watch another 40 episodes of this show, but instead simply asking, would I watch another 10. It's about attention span, too! I loved The Rise of Phoenixes last year. Every time I watched it I would watch several episodes in quick succession. But it is 70 fucking episodes. I watched 28 episodes of it, and if it had been, say, a 40 episode show, I would have clung to my focus and finished it. But 28 episodes is less than half of 70, and my attention span simply was not great enough.
Anyways. This is all to say I may someday finish The Rise of Phoenixes, and maybe you will too, but in the meantime, here's a short list of shorter cdramas you can binge (and I have binged!) in a reasonable period of time, roughly in order of just how short they really are.
Tier 1: I Would Be Surprised If You Didn't Binge This In A Week or Less. With Commitment You Could Probably Do It In 2 Days.
The miniseries tier.
Destined to Meet You--A cutesy little webseries I found this year. A Business Romance (yes, this is a genre) between a rich businesswoman and a college student who has a few tricks up his sleeve. Involves a marriage of convenience but also just immense cutesiness. One upside of a show being short is that my romance/fluff tolerance is greatly heightened! I would not be able to watch 20 full length episodes of this show but it is 20 ten minute episodes and therefore very doable.
A Familiar Stranger--A historical romance with political intrigue, swapped identities and faces, and a couple that met a long time ago reuniting with secrets to hide from each other. Also fairly cutesy in its romance but with the typical edge of historical intrigue, a little action and whump. 8 episodes of about half an hour each.
Addicted Heroin--A gay school romance (yes, I mean gay romance, not bromance! I was surprised bc my experience with cdramas is a lot of censoring, and it's not that Addicted Heroin isn't censored, but it kind of predates some of the heavier censoring, and also the way it was censored is more like "it was supposed to be twice as long and has a cliffhanger ending" rather than "they stare at each other meaningfully but never kiss.") between stepsiblings that do not initially know they are stepsiblings. Tons of bantering and aggressive flirtation, lots of shenanigans and a certain level of whump. Problematique. 15 episodes of about 25 minutes each.
Love Is More Than a Word--Censored gay romance historical drama, focused on the relationship between a magistrate and a scholar in a country province. Includes some political intrigue and lots of slashiness, but feels like it was meant to be longer (probably cut down due to censoring). 12 episodes of half an hour each.
Tier 2: Could In Theory Take Two Weeks But Did Not Take Me That Long
Reset--Really excellent time loop thriller. Every episode is very plot focused, yet it still takes the time to flesh out characters without giving a sense of filler. 15 episodes of the typical 45-minute length.
Yes there is only one show I'd rec in this category. It's a great length though. But I think once you hit around twenty episodes, which is more typical, you might be like me and not be able to sustain a binge, which means you're more in the territory of...
Tier 3: Could Be Reasonably Binged in Three Weeks
Here we get some dramas that are long enough for more in-depth development typical of a longer cdrama, but still easy to finish.
Ancient Detective--A detective travels the jianghu solving mysteries and seeking the story behind his father's death. Fun ensemble cast, sort of a case-per-episode vibe except the cases generally last more like 4-6 episodes. 24 episodes total of 45 minutes each.
Rattan--An alien plant woman comes back to life after being murdered like 80 years ago, and sets out to find her murderer with a human helper at her side. There's a little romance, a lot of mystery and fantasy elements, and enough whump to satisfy me at least :) I loved the two leads; I'd seen both of them in other shows before but I think they really shone in this one. 30 episodes of 45 minutes each.
Under the Skin--Case procedural buddy cop show with a genius sketch artist and a cop who blames said sketch artist for his mentor's death. Oh, the tension! Honestly my favorite part of this show was seeing what ridiculous trick Shen Yi was going to pull with his sketching next, ranging from reconstructing a face from blurred images to drawing a face based off the structure of a skull to drawing from the description of a witness under the influence of drugs who is unable to give a coherent report. 20 episodes of 45 minutes each.
Xiang Long--I'm not sure I should be putting this show on a reclist bc I kind of hate it but I also kind of love it and you know what, a love-hate watch of 20 episodes is not that big of a commitment, so! If you want to watch a Republican-era historical drama that is mostly just about two young masters and their toxic slashy obsession, replete with whump and melodrama, and you see the occasional urge to yell at the screen as a plus, Xiang Long is here for your needs.
I'm going to demonstrate some self control and end this reclist here! For me, it's usually much easier to finish a kdrama than a cdrama sheerly because of length, but with the exception of Rattan, all of these shows come out to as long as the average kdrama or shorter (calculating the average kdrama as about 16 episodes of about 70 minutes each). So if you have similar problems with finishing things to me, you might try one of these out!

Hey I know this might be uncalled for and idk much about anything, but I found the last post in your personal blog talking about your trip kind of alarming. It sounds like you’re putting a lot of effort to an important friend, but from your posts, the entire situation just seems fishy. I’m sorry if I sound rude, I’m just concerned because you mentioned the other friend won’t make it and you’ll be alone with this guy far from home, and he doesn’t have any plans to take you around (which a lot of times, hanging out and sight-seeing doesn’t really require money, if any at all). I really hope that if you decide to go you’ll have an amazing time but at this point, but I’m afraid you’re kinda setting yourself up for disappointment? And I really hope I’m not rude by saying this. Again, you’re putting a lot of care and money into this trip so at this point you should think twice and consider going somewhere else and have fun by yourself.

For context for you guys who just know me over here, I recently reconnected with an old online friend I knew like 9 years ago and he kind of just invited me up for a visit with him and another online friend i knew during the same time period who also lives in his area on a whim because, life is short, the pandemic has been hell, people have died and drifted apart and all that, and I was really happy because he used to be a big pillar of support for me back in the day (the other friend too) and I thought "hey, taking a trip could be really good for me, im already super depressed lmao" but being invited up quickly turned into 1. Other friend can't make it 2. I have to provide my own lodging aka paying for motel which is expensive 3. He doesn't drive so I have to be taking a rideshare service to travel like 6 miles to his place and back to my hotel 4. I knew he was, earning a scholarship and such but he dropped on me today after I've already scheduled everything that he's been a full time student with no income so like, we really won't even be able to do basic shit like go out to eat or see a movie unless I pay for everything and that's on top of already spending like $1k on traveling and the motel alone
My mom is trying to talk me out of going and, I will be honest and say I'm really upset with his communication. He invited me in a really sincere way but this entire process has been a nightmare. Like I figured since I'm, you know, having to pay for a passport and travel to Canada, that we would be able to like sightsee and maybe check out the local food and try poutine but the only activities he has suggested so far is hiking (which is fine that sounds fun) and idk listening to music on subwoofers in his room in the house he shares with like 3 other men and doing shrooms. Like dude I love this guy like a brother but he really kind of should have told me he was quote "extremely poor" before I shelled out the cash to take 8 days out of my schedule, two of those which I'm going to be travelling the entire day, literally my departure day is gonna be 4am to 7pm nothing but travel and similar on the day back
But also like. He was there for me a lot of the times I needed it when I was younger, he supported me and did nice things for me, so I feel I owe him even if I didn't want to go, which I do like trust me I still want to see him. Yeah this isn't ideal but, it could still be something really good for the both of us. I trust him not to be creepy with me and you know, he's been through some really hard stuff too (for you followers over here, he is the same friend I mentioned the other day who basically lost use of his dominant hand in a work accident). Yeah it seems kind of iffy now but I could go and have a great time. And if not, if we don't click, and it's super awkward, then yeah I'm going to be extremely hardcore depressed by myself in a foreign country but I'll have my own hotel room so I can have my own space and do my own things until I crawl back home. I'll actually be in the Niagara Falls/St Catharines area of Ontario so, I figure, if I'm forced to make the best of a bad situation, there should be plenty of opportunities by myself due to the tourism :)
But yeah I'm still really nervous and I'm disappointed and anxious about this trip and I still have to pay for my passport and this is kind of coming at not the best time but,, I'm looking forward to this and so is he so, I think everything will be OK. And if not then I'll be super heartbroken and never want to trust anyone again because no one else will be familiar with me and accept me the way he has and if i don't have that then I might as well not even exist lol :)

Egotober 2022 Day: 23 Stalking Treatment
Summary: Nothing says “good patrol” day like being followed.
Prompt: Creepy
Characters: Jackie, Silver

Jackie knew something was wrong. Henrik was still gone and Anti had been unnaturally quiet for a long time.
In the years and years that Jackie had fought against Anti, he knew that the demon liked to toy with whoever he was hunting. And usually he got too impatient for long, drawn out hunts. And Anti was suddenly creeping around his territory, stalking Jackie in particular.
Anti was up to something, and it was getting bad.
Jackie was on a patrol with Silver, they were walking around Althone and he could feel someone watching him.
“Any changes?” Silver asked quietly as they got to a Korean food truck they both liked to hit during patrols.
“Not yet,” Jackie said as he grabbed his own little meal tray and they took their food up to a random rooftop so they wouldn’t be interrupted or scare people.
“He’s been stalling around my house,” Jackie admitted around a mouthful of rice.
“He found another place you live at?” Silver paused eating to stare at Jackie in horror.
“Yeah and he hasn’t done anything yet,” Jackie said. “He hasn’t bothered my girlfriend, hasn’t bothered our cat, hasn’t even marked the house yet and that’s always the first thing he does.”
“Should we get the brainiacs and do something?” Silver asked.
“Not yet, Henrik is sending texts but they’re weird,” Jackie said. “The first few were fine, but now I don’t know what’s wrong with them but I don’t think Hein is sending them.”
“Do we know where he is?”  Silver asked.
“No.” Jackie stabbed at his rice with a fork. “But Anti might, and that’s why he’s acting weird.”
“How do you know that?” Silver stared at him.
“Cause Henrik and Anti have kinda been conjoined at the hip for a long time. And we know they’re probably dating, but if it keeps Anti from killing people every week then who cares?”
“How long has this been a thing?” Silver asked.
“Officially, for a while,” Jackie said. “How long they’ve actually been dating, we don’t know. We kinda hoped if we didn’t bring it up before they did, that Anti wouldn’t get uppity and he’d just stay calm.”
“That’s certainly better than having a knife-happy demon on the streets,” Silver agreed.
“Yeah, but it just feels weird, you know?” Jackie said.
Then he looked down at the street.
“Hey, Silv, watch my food for a second so the birds don’t get it,” Jack set his tray down and zipped down to the streets and zipped past a normal looking dark blue van to see a read of the license plate. Something about the van set his teeth on edge. He didn’t know why he didn’t trust it, he just didn’t. Then he quickly raced back to Mark up on the roof.
“Bad news?” Silver asked, handing him back the tray.
“Thanks,” Jackie told him. “Maybe. It doesn’t seem to be Anti though. I noticed that van down there following us twice, it has the same license plate as the other ones I saw.”
“Should we say something to them? You sure they’re watching us?” Silver finished his food as Jackie just inhaled the rest of his.
“Maybe not yet, don’t want the feds on our case just cause we knocked on their door,” Jackie said.
“Yeah,” Silver picked up off the roof top as Jackie stood up and got to fully stretch out and then went back to trying to trail Anti. All the while the white van would periodically follow them, and then they’d lose Anti’s trail for a bit.
So Jackie called them off to go somewhere else. The van followed them for a bit before they completely lost track of it. Anti crossed their path close to the base and Jackie and Silver went in to talk to Bing about the situation.
Jackie saw the van still following him while on patrols. Jackie’s unease didn’t led up either but he waited. He waited for himself or someone else to get attacked. He was not starting this fight, but he was certainly ending it.

And their senior year of highshool is full of secrets and hiding: Peter becomes Spiderman, AJ's dad finds out something more dangerous than he thought he would about Carlton Drake, and the third person to their childhood trio comes back after 8 years.

Peter and I met up after 7th period to walk to his house. My dad was in San Francisco for a job. That was a thing about my father I never quite understood, he never told me about his pieces. I've only ever found out just before it comes out, or even hours after when it's already out.
I guess it helps when, on the off chance, one of the guys he's investigating ends up calling the police on him. Accusing him of stalking or defamation. Then they come to the school, pluck me out of class, and ask me questions. It's only happened twice, but both times, I was never able to give them information. My dad's plan was fool proof, he doesn't allow his work to affect our home life. But then again we don't speak very often. And I'm home alone.
That's why he's started letting me go stay with Peter on the weekends. My dad trusted Peter and Uncle Ben and Aunt May. We'd known the Parkers since I was five. It's hard not to trust them. Hence why I'm walking with Peter to his house.
"Gwen knows my name," Peter said randomly as he pushed lightly off his skateboard. I turned to look at him. He glanced at me, "She said it in sixth period."
"Just out loud, for no reason?" I joked but was still confused.
He scoffed out a laugh, "No, no. She asked me to say my name in case I had a concussion," he told me almost dreamily.
"Maybe you do," I told him, observing how smiley he was now. "He did hit you pretty hard-"
"How's your hand?" He asked, hopping off his board and stopping me in my path, changing the subject. He stepped on the board to keep it stationary as he turned to examine my hand. "You hit him pretty hard."
"It's okay," I trailed off, trying to fight the butterflies I felt when he slowly ran his hand over my bruised left hand. The way he held my hand gently made me want to melt into the ground.
"And your back?" He asked, not letting go of my hand. He looked up, causing me to blink a few times.
"Huh?"
He smiled in amusement at me, "Your back?"
"Oh!" I pulled my hand away easily and shrugged. I re-adjusted my bag, "It's not too bad. It just hurt a little when I sat down in Jordan’s class."
He nodded, eyeing me carefully. "I can look at it when we get home?" I furrowed my eyebrows before he realized what he said. "Or Aunt May can! You'd probably be more comfortable with that…"
I shook my head in amusement, continuing down the sidewalk to Peter's house. "I don't think I need an examination, Dr. Parker," I told him, hearing his skateboard roll closer to me. Then he appeared in my peripherals. "But I appreciate the sentiment."
"Right…" He trailed off, keeping his eyes on the sidewalk.
I glanced over at him, noticing the bruise on his jaw. "I actually think I should be the one asking if you're okay."
"Huh? Oh!" He reached up to touch his jaw lightly. He waved it off and shook his head in dismissal. "It's fine, doesn't hurt too much."
I narrowed my eyes at him suspiciously. He looked over at me when I didn't say anything and laughed at me. "What? Jolene?"
I gasped and looked at him in betrayal. "What did you just call me, Benjamin?" He winced at the mention of his own middle name and laughed.
"Yeah, I guess it does sound weird," He said, scrunching his nose in playful disgust. "But really, I'm fine, AJ"
I sighed and shook my head at him. "So you went to the nurse? She said no concussion? No broken or bruised ribs?"
I watched Peter purse his lips, and then his face scrunched up as he thought of something to say. I waited in an amused anticipation to see what excuse he was going to say. Especially since I knew he didn’t go to the nurse.
"Well, I-"
"You didn't go to the nurse?"
"I didn't go to the nurse… but in my defense-"
"You felt fine?"
"...I felt fine."

Peter ran up the steps at the front of his house, pulling the door open. He held it open for me and slightly bowed when I thanked him. I giggled as we stepped into the house and greeted Aunt May.
"Hey!" He called out as we set our bags down by the bottom of the stairs. We slowly made our way into the kitchen.
"Hi, Aunt May!" I said once I saw her at the small island chopping up onions. She immediately looked up and smiled at me.
She set down the knife and walked over to me, giving me a hug. I giggled at the spontaneous affection I still hadn't gotten used to after all these years.
"Hi, Alina," She said softly, letting go of me before she walked back to her onions. "I'm making spaghetti and meatballs tonight."
"Ooh, can I help?" I asked, walking over to the sink to wash my hands.
"Are you serious?" Peter muttered efeatedly. "Spaghetti and meatballs?" I turned my head around to look at him strangely as I pumped soap into my hands. He opened the fridge with a pout on his face.
"Since when don't you like spaghetti and meatballs, huh?" Aunt May asked as she collected the diced onions and threw them into the pan. They sizzled as they hit the pan, the smell of them slowly filling the kitchen.
I crossed over to stand with May in front of the stove just as Peter started walking towards the counter. Right as he walked by, I flicked the remaining water from my hands onto his face. He flinched from the contact and stopped in his tracks. I snorted when he opened his eyes and glared at me.
May turned around and smiled at our antics before she noticed the bruise on Peter's face when he stood in front of the counter. "Oh, my god!"
"Huh?" Peter asked, turning around to face us.
"What happened to your face?" Aunt May asked in horror. I gave Peter an amused look as he slowly came up with a lie.
"No, I'm alright," He said, hopping up onto the counter. "Just fell… skating."
I narrowed my eyes at him comically and tried to cover up my smile with my hand. Aunt May shook her head at him and sighed. She looked at me for some input, but then her eyes fell on my hand. I quickly put it away, and just as she was going to say something, Uncle Ben came waddling in with a box of trophies.
"Ben Parker!" Aunt May exclaimed, causing the older man in question to look at her like a deer in headlights. "Don't you dare even think about leaving that filthy box in my kitchen!"
He looked at her offendedly, "These are my bowling trophies," he explained.
Peter and I looked at each other with amused smiles. He took a drink of apple juice he pulled from the fridge, watching them argue back and forth.
"Oh, then, by all means, please leave that filthy box in my kitchen," Aunt May said sarcastically, reaching into the fridge to grab out a jar of tomato sauce. I motioned to Peter to hand me the apple juice. He reached over and handed it to me as Uncle Ben shuffled the box off the table and onto the floor.
"What happened to you?" Ben asked once he noticed Peter's face. I took a drink of the apple juice and glanced over at Peter.
"He fell," Aunt May said with a scolding tone. Peter gave me another knowing look as I handed him back the juice. "Why you kids ride those things, I'll never know."
I hummed in agreement. Peter looked at me confused as he put the cold apple juice bottle on his jaw, "Didn't your dad teach you how to ride a motorcycle?"
"That's different," I said, grabbing the tomato jar from Aunt May and opening it with ease. She stepped back as I stood over the pan and poured in the chunky tomato sauce.
"I stand by what I said," Aunt May said, crossing her arms. "I don't understand how you can ride those things."
"Because it's stupid and dangerous." Uncle Ben said, placing his hands on his hips. "Remember when we were stupid and dangerous?"
"No," Aunt May said, pointedly. I smiled to myself at the idea of them being young. Even now, they were so youthful despite their old age. It was refreshing and heartwarming at the same time.
"Trust me, we were," Ben said to us as he took the towel off his shoulder and threw it into the trophy box. I hummed in amusement, reaching into their spice cabinet and grabbing the powdered garlic.
"Alright, good to know," Peter said with just as much amusement as I felt. "Hey, where's the flood?"
"Follow me, I'll show ya," Uncle Ben said as he walked off with the trophy box.
Peter looked at me skeptically. "You serious?" he called out to his uncle.
"Yes," Uncle Ben called back, getting farther from us in the kitchen. Peter mumbled an 'alright' and hopped off the counter. He made his way out of the kitchen to follow Ben, but not without bopping me with the half empty apple juice bottle.
I shoved him away playfully, causing him to stagger his steps. He turned around to grin at me as he walked backward towards the basement. He stuck out his tongue before turning and disappearing from my line of sight.
I shook my head, amused, and continued stirring around the base mix of the spaghetti sauce. That's when I realized I had added in the sauce too early. I sucked my teeth and sighed, using the wooden spoon to dab some of the sauce onto the palm of my right hand. I licked it off my palm and tasted it to see what I could add to fix it.
"So, when are you and Peter going to cut to the chase and start dating?" Aunt May asked nonchalantly, causing me to choke lightly on the sauce. I coughed and looked at her, bewildered. "Oh, don't act like nothings going on there."
I shook my head, reaching into the same cabinet for the olive oil. "There isn't!"
"I'm old enough to know two people like each other when I see it. I'm not old enough to let it happen on its own," Aunt May said, leaning against the counter. I laughed nervously, shaking my head.
"I don't know what you want me to tell you," I said, intently looking back at the sauce. I lightly drizzled in the olive oil, watching how it sat on top of the red sauce.
"I want you to tell him to hurry up and realize there's a perfect girl for him, and she's right in front of him," Aunt May said obviously with an annoyed tone.
I sighed, "He already likes someone else," I watched May deflate a little. She thought for a moment.
"I doubt she's nearly as great as you," Aunt May told me with finality. "Peter has terrible judgment. Why do you think I don't let him buy the produce."
I snorted, remembering when he brought back bruised parsley after May asked him to get cilantro. "Yeah… but she's nice. Really smart. Top of our class. Really pretty. People love her…"
It's true. Everyone knew who she was. I couldn't even bring myself to hate her because of it. She was nice to everyone. She was easy to talk to and get along with. I hadn't much in the past, but she really was a great person. It made sense that Peter liked her. Almost every guy at Midtown liked her.
“So, what?” Aunt May shrugged. I looked at her and furrowed my eyebrows. “You don't have to be top of your class. She sounds like she kisses up to people and cares about what people think."
My eyes widened at Aunt May's words. "Don't say that!"
"I don't care. That's what makes you different," She said. The silence following her words was filled with the sizzling from the pan. Her words rang through the air and echoed in my head. "You don't care what people think. And you're beautiful without trying. People might love her, but Peter loves you. You're his best friend, and I bet he knows you better than her. If he doesn't see that, he's far blinder than I thought he was."
I looked away and just let her words sink in. She made good points, but they would make sense if I didn't know Gwen was a far better person than me. Far better for Peter. From the few times I've spoken to her and the countless times I've spent with Peter, they would just work well together. So much better than me.
Peter needed someone like Gwen. She was so refreshing to talk to. And just unbelievably kind. Her humour was unmatched, and if Peter was in that mix… forget about it. It's bound to happen. Something will get them together, and I won't be able to be around them. They would work so well together that it hurts to even imagine.
And I can't think of any reason why Gwen wouldn't immediately love Peter. It would be a mistake for her to reject him. I don't think I would be able to handle how heartbroken he would be, either.
"Here are the meatballs," Aunt May said quietly, pulling me out of my thoughts. She placed a tupperware container next to the stove with a few meatballs inside. I pulled the wooden spoon out again, tapping my palm with it and tasting the sauce.
"Do you have basil?" I asked, tapping the spoon on the edge of the pan and resting the spoon on the edge of it. I watched Aunt May think for a second.
"It's not fresh," She told me. I shrugged and mumbled an 'alright' to her. She reached back into the spice cabinet and moved around a few containers with spices before she pulled out a plastic container with dried bay leaves.
I pursed my lips when she presented them to me, giving them a little shake as to show them off to me. I took them cautiously and shrugged, I pulled the lid off and sniffed the leaves. The smell was strong enough to use.
"We need to call someone to fix the fill line," Ben said as she waded into the kitchen once again without Peter.
"So… Plumber?" Aunt May asked, lifting the lid to the spaghetti and forking out a strand. I grabbed a bunch of basil leaves and crushed it up into the sauce. I turned to grab a glass from the cabinet next to the sink and filled it with water
"A plumber, May?" Uncle Ben asked, setting down another box on the floor of the kitchen. I walked over to the stove and slowly poured in less than half of the water.
"What?" She asked, exasperated. I stirred the sauce around, waiting for it to start bubbling. When it did, I grabbed the tupperware and dumped the meatballs into the pan.
"You don't call plumbers for fixes," he said, shaking his head. I thought about it for a moment as I took the empty tupperware to the sink.
"Yes, you do!" May argued as she started stirring the meatballs now. I smiled and watched them quietly as I sat up on the counter where Peter had been earlier.
"Plumbers don't fix appliances," Ben said exasperatedly.
"Yes, they do!" Aunt May argued again. Just then, I saw Peter walk into the dining room holding an old leather briefcase. I watched him for a moment before hopping off the counter and walking over to him
"They fix pipes, and they pump things!" Ben argues back.
Aunt May moved in front of the island again. "If you ask them to-"
Peter briefly glanced at me once I stood next to him. A silence fell over the other two. I watched them give each other a look.
"I forgot all about that thing," Ben said, chuckling nervously. "It was your dad's."
"Yeah?" Peter asked softly, looking through the pockets of the bag. I looked into it as well. Nothing of note was inside.
"He asked us to keep it safe," Uncle Ben explained. He waded over, coming to sit down at the dining table right across from where we stood. Peter smiled, admiring the buckle at the front that had the initials. "He saw it in the window of that leather shop over on 9th Avenue. He was 19. What does a 19 year old need with a briefcase?"
"Did he see it with the initials originally on it, too?" I asked sarcastically. Peter huffed out a laugh.
"Yeah," Uncle Ben chuckled. "The person who sold it to him did it for him. But guess who sold it to him?"
Peter shrugged, "I dont know." I looked over at Aunt May, who just smiled with unshed tears in her eyes.
"You're mother," Ben told us. I smiled, imagining Peter's parents being young and cute. I didn't remember much of them, but they weren't very affectionate from what I remember. I just thought they were normal parents like the ones I saw in the movies.
"He asked you to keep this? Keep this safe?" Peter asked, shaking his head. Tears were slowly starting to well in his eyes. "Why? Theres no-nothing in here. Have you looked in here? There's nothing here."
He looked at me with a look in his eyes that was desperate. He showed me the inside of the bag to emphasize his point. I shrugged and shook my head.
"Your father was a secretive man, Peter," May said, stepping closer to Ben.
Peter took in a breath, nodding, "Yeah, I know." He laughed humorlessly. Uncle Ben looked at him with pursed lips before diverting his gaze to the briefcase. May just frowned at us as Peter dug into one of the pockets.
He pulled out an old newspaper clipping. It was a printed picture of his dad standing next to a man. Both of them sported lab coats and ties. He looked at it silently for a second before turning it around to May and Ben.
"Who's that?" Peter asked breathily. But there was a hint of hopefulness that made my heart warm. "Do you know who that is?"
"Some guy who worked with your dad, I guess." Ben said as he looked at the picture with an indifferent appearance. Peter wordlessly showed it to his aunt, who just looked at it.
"Just take this off the table, alright?" May reached with the towel she had pulled off her shoulder. Peter lifted it when she started wiping at the table. "We're gonna eat. Off…! and wash your hands. Now."
Peter mumbled an 'okay' under his breath while he stuck the newspaper clipping back into the briefcase. Ben nodded to him when Peter just eyed him cautiously.
"Alina, you can go wash up too. I think I can handle the spaghetti from here," Aunt May told me from the kitchen. I looked at her curiously, noticing the frown on her face.
"You sure? Is everything alright?" I couldn't help but ask. The mood switch was so glaringly obvious.
She swallowed and nodded. "Yes, sweetheart. Go ahead."
