Magical Morning
A/N: Day 20 of the 25 Days of BAU Christmas! The BAU members in Harry Potter World, all of whom are staying at Hogwarts this year and celebrate Christmas together! Featuring as many BAU babies throughout the seasons as I can fit in to a small piece. :D
Tumblr media
“Get up! Get up! Get up! Happy Christmas!”
The Hufflepuff common room was basically empty - only fourth years Spencer Reid and Penelope Garcia, and prefect Alex Blake remained behind.
Year after year, Blake stayed behind, preferring to keep those alone at Christmas company, rather than going home. Muggle Christmas was fun and all, but she had a great family, she could be with them anytime. Penelope was an orphan, living with Kate’s family, and Spencer preferred not to go home - as a muggleborn four years into magical living, he was still astounded by all that he saw and Christmastime was no exception.
Although girls and boys weren’t supposed to go into the others’ living quarters, Blake, Penelope and Spencer were the only ones there, so Blake let it slide when Penelope ran up the stairs to the boys’ dormitory, complete with Callahan family sweater emblazoned with the letter “P.”
“Get up, Spencer! It’s Christmas!”
A huff of air escaped him as Penelope jumped on top of him. “What time is it?” Always such a heavy sleeper.
“It’s time for food in the Great Hall! Christmas with friends! Without having to care what house we belong to! Co-mingling! Presents! Get up!” Penelope levitated a pillow and sent it flying towards his face as she turned to run back down the stairs, letting Blake know he’d be down momentarily.
As he roused from bed, he looked out the window at the grounds; it’s what he’d done every year since he started, and it was no less amazing today. Everything was covered with snow - from the Quidditch Pitch to the tips of the trees in the Forbidden Forest, so dangerous and deadly, yet so beautiful with shimmering crystals floating above it. With a swish of his wand, he carried his gifts down the stairs for his friends.
A beater and a chaser for the Gryffindor Quidditch team, both Matt Simmons and Jennifer Jareau had been drilling all week for the upcoming games. Exhausted didn’t even begin to cover it. “Simmons! It’s Christmas!” Aaron said, pulling the bed off the younger man.
He popped up in bed, immediately aware that he overslept. “Thanks, Aaron. Practice has been killing us. Should we go wake JJ? Wouldn’t want to be late for breakfast with everyone.”
Matt quickly changed his clothes and followed Aaron up the stairs to the girls’ dormitory. There were a few other girls staying behind, but they tended to stick with each other, though they were always invited to the festivities. JJ however was staying at school this year. Her family wasn’t the same after her sister had died; it was too hard to go home. “I’m up!” She screamed as they approached the door. “I’ll be there in a few. Go ahead without me!”
Without hesitation, Matt and Aaron turned around and headed out of the Gryffindor common room and toward the Great Hall. JJ probably just needed a moment alone; she’d be down soon, and then they’d all make sure she had a Happy Christmas.
“Are we all ready yet?” Prefect Rossi screamed. He, Emily Prentiss and Elle Greenaway had left their Christmas shopping until the last minute. They’d had to run to Hogsmeade on super short notice and grab what they wanted to for their friends, coming back to wrap things late last night.
Elle strode down the stairs, with Emily right behind, with a smile on her face. Her last gift was wrapping itself as she walked. She’d gone home for Christmas some years, and others she hadn’t. Emily had a muggle mother; she was something called a diplomat, so she was rarely home of Christmas anyway, making it easy for Emily to choose to stay at Hogwarts. “I wrapped mine last night.”
“I was too tired,” Elle laughed. “I passed out as soon as we got back. What about you? Prefect Rossi?”
“Stop calling me Prefect Rossi! You know how much I hate it.”
Elle patted him on the shoulder as the three walked out of Slytherin house and down towards the Great Hall. “That’s why I do it.”
“Your babygirl and my best friend are waiting!” Kate yelled. “Everyone is waiting for us! Derek Morgan and Luke Alvez, get up right now!” Kate had barged into the Ravenclaw boys’ room and ripped the blankets off them without even taking two steps inside.
Both boys’ stomachs grumbled as they groggily got up. Luke had been up late talking to Spencer from Hufflepuff - one of the reasons he had stayed behind this Christmas, and Derek had been practicing with the Ravenclaw Quidditch team. “Why are you so loud?” Derek asked, wiping the sleep from his eyes.
“Because it’s Christmas and I’m hungry!” She smiled. She walked over in between their beds and smacked them both. “Now get up. Get changed. Get your gifts and let’s go!”
She was already decked out in her family sweater stitched with a “K,” and considering she’d barely had anything to eat last night she couldn’t stop thinking of roast turkeys and boiled potatoes and buttered peas. Her stomach started to growl. “Hurry up!”
Both Luke and Derek ran down the stairs, chocolate frogs in hand for Kate. “Eat these or you might kill us.”
“I might anyway,” she laughed.
As Spencer, Blake and Penelope entered the Great Hall, there eyes immediately floated upward, following the enchanted snowflakes as they fell towards the table and disappeared.
In the days following up to Christmas, giants had been hired to carry in trees almost taller than the Weeping Willow. They were decorated in gold and silver, green, red and blue, baubles and tinsel and lights - the tree could barely be seen. But it was beautifully bewitched.
Ahead, already seated at the tables were Jennifer Jareau, Matt Simmons and Aaron Hotchner of Gryffindor, as well as Elle Greenaway, Emily Prentiss, and David Rossi, who lived in Slytherin House. On Christmas, no one bothered with assigned house tables, and instead just sat together. At this time of year, they could all sit together without having to worry about what others in their house might think. “Happy Christmas!” Penelope exclaimed, running over to her friends and embracing them with all the warmth of Christmas Day.
While the nine students exchanged holiday greetings and stared in wonderment at the enchanted ceilings above, Kate, Luke and Derek entered through the mile-high doors. “Happy Christmas!” Kate called, still nibbling on one of her chocolate frogs. Derek had insisted she eat something, lest they die on the way down the stairs. “Should we eat first? Or gifts?”
“Eat!” They all called.
Smiles and laughter abound as they all sat on either side of the Gryffindor table. Kate immediately grabbed a little bit of everything, but managed to pass things over to Luke and Derek in the process. Spencer, who rarely ate all that much, being too nervous about getting chastised by Professor Snape, much like that Harry Potter kid a year behind him, filled his plate to bursting and barely said a word as he ate. Penelope fixated on the roast turkey as she always did, while Rossi, Emily and Elle did more flinging of food than eating.
It was nearly an hour before they all stopped eating, and the plates still looked full. Turkeys still fat and plump. Potatoes still piled high. Peas still swimming in their basin and cranberry still full to bursting in its bowl. “Gifts now?” Penelope asked as she bounced up and down in her seat.
Slowly but surely, everyone rolled towards their presents, too full to bother standing up. One by one, each of them handed out boxes of all shapes and sizes, some packages too, wrapped up in colorful bags and tied in neat bows. Only one of them had packages of one size and shape - Spencer. He stared at them happily, knowing full well that all of his friends had gotten him books.
“Open now?” Emily cried. She was too excited. Her mother was her mother, but she never really felt a ton of love and warmth from her - with her friends, it was different.
As the prefects, Rossi, Aaron and Blake gave the go ahead, watching as paper went flying in all directions. Spencer unwrapped book after book, as was expected. He’d devour them within days, but he loved them all the same. Most Potente Potions, Great Wizards of the Twentieth Century, Important Modern Magical Discoveries - all fascinating, at least as the son of two muggles.
JJ and Matt got memorabilia from their favorite Quidditch team - the Banchory Bangers. Derek received a new broom, courtesy of everyone chipping in. Emily and Elle got a mountain of items for pranking their friends. Everything from Zonko’s was wonderful, especially the inflatable tongues. And Rossi took joy in eating his gifts as soon as he opened them - he had a weakness for Fizzing Whizzbees.
On the other side of the table, Kate unwrapped a mountain of Chocolate Frogs, which was good, considering she was still in the process of collecting all the cards, and Luke received a love potion, though he wasn’t sure from whom. Out of the corner of his eye, he saw Spencer and wondered, a smile plastered on his face.
Practical as always, Aaron asked for quills and self-tying ties - anything that could make life a little easier. And Blake received a mixture of books, some sweets and a new perfume that smelled of freshly-cut grass and newly-laundered clothes.
From Kate and Penelope came matching sweaters! Kate’s mother had taught them the knitting spell and the two spent all year trying to perfect it to make sweaters for their friends.
Despite the early morning hour, everyone was excited and awake, desperate for something else to do. “Well, it’s snowing out,” Matt said. “Snowball fight? Guys versus girls?”
“I mean that’s not fair,” Elle laughed. “You boys are obviously going to lose.”
Luke scoffed. “I don’t think so Greenaway.”
“I say we settle this,” Aaron replied with a smile. “Everyone should return to their dormitories, put away your gifts, get into your sweaters from Kate and Penelope of course, and meet out on the grounds in 15 minutes.”
The hoard of students bounded up the stairs and returned to the grounds promptly all wearing their matching sweaters. “Okay, this goes the muggle way,” Emily said. “No enchanted snowballs.”
The boys all groaned, but agreed. Snowball fights were one of the few things that muggles did better, plus, it would force Luke and Spencer to team up making snowballs. She hoped it would get them to see that they liked each other. Although maybe she should take her own advice...
JJ was waiting with the other girls, a snowball in hand that she passed over to Emily, their hands grazing slightly and sending chills up their spines, much different than those the weather brought. “We all ready?” JJ called.
“Ready!” The boys shouted.
Rossi walked into the middle of the two teams and lifted his hands. “Let the best team win! On your marks! Get set! Go!”
Among the gently falling snow, in matching sweaters, it could not have been a more perfect morning.

Criminal Minds Characters' Hogwarts Houses
I’ve seen a couple of people posting what Hogwarts houses they think the BAU members belong to, so I’m chucking my hat into the ring.
Aaron Hotchner:
Hufflepuff - Fair, loyal and hardworking. The best three words to describe Hotch. Hufflepuffs are actually described as ‘just and loyal…patient…true…unafraid of toil’…need I say more?
David Rossi:
Gryffindor - I was torn about this one, but I decided that Rossi is probably the boldest and most daring BAU member. I also think he’s one of the team members who is most likely to speak his mind and standing up to authority. (Although young Rossi definitely would have been in Slytherin for his ambition.)
Spencer Reid:
Ravenclaw - Undoubtedly, Reid’s a genius and loves learning. He also clearly values logic.
Derek Morgan:
Gryffindor - chivalrous and brave are definitely characteristics of Morgan.
Luke Alvez:
Slytherin - he’s surprisingly cunning and determined. Remember him threatening Calvin Shaw and even manipulating his former army friend? (“Like Yemen?) He’s also clearly loyal and dedicated to his friends.
Stephen Walker:
Hufflepuff - loyal and hardworking. He clearly cared a lot about his family, but also wanted to make a difference in the world through his job.
Jason Gideon:
Hufflepuff - sensitive and dedicated to helping others.
Emily Prentiss:
Gryffindor - again, this was a tough choice. I feel like in many ways Emily could be in Slytherin - particularly considering her work as an undercover agent and the whole Doyle storyline. But, above all, I think she’s one of the bravest and most self-sacrificing characters on the show.
Jennifer Jareau:
Slytherin - I was torn between Slytherin and Hufflepuff to be honest. I settled on Slytherin based on her impressive abilities in her role as Communications Liaison. She’s also very determined and ambitious (don’t forget the amount of training she put in to become a profiler).
Penelope Garcia:
Ravenclaw - I could also see Hufflepuff, but I think people forget how brilliant and smart Garcia is. Intelligence isn’t just limited to logic and books either, creativity is also really important - I’m thinking of her as a more Luna Lovegood type character.
Tara Lewis:
Slytherin - she’s definitely determined and ambitious. Don’t forget about all the extra responsibilities she takes on as a forensic psychologist. Also she didn’t allow her fiancé to hold her back from achieving her dreams.
Elle Greenway:
Gryffindor - I could also imagine Slytherin, but I always felt as if Elle was more bold and assertive rather than particularly cunning. (I also think a Slytherin would have gotten away with murder because they’d be so sneaky about it.)
Jordan Todd:
Slytherin - she seemed very driven and ambitious to me. This particularly showed in 52 pickup when she was willing to manipulate the victim’s family in order to solve the case.
Ashley Seaver:
Hufflepuff - I just think she always seemed quite an empathetic character. Maybe it was her own personal history influencing her caring nature? - Just going off the Drew Jacobs and trafficking cases.
Alex Blake:
Ravenclaw - definitely a Ravenclaw. She was highly intelligent and driven.
Kate Callahan:
Gryffindor - she struck me as being quite brave and passionate. Again, a fine line between these characteristics and the determination of a Slytherin.

A/N: An anon request for a JJ x OC (Brandon) where she starts dating him after having broken up with Will in season 13. JJ introduces him to the team as her friend but then Henry makes a little mistake...
                                                             ----
After the hell that had been this past year, with having her best friend in prison for a crime he didn’t commit to having one of the most notorious killers they’d ever faced constantly five steps ahead until recently, JJ and Will’s relationship and been pushed to the brink.
Both still loved each other dearly, but they couldn’t handle both being in law enforcement anymore. It was too much of a strain and neither could imagine giving their jobs up despite their love for each other, so 9 months ago they’d called it quits. It had been one of the hardest things JJ had ever had to do, but she, Will and the kids were better off for the long haul. Fights had started to take over their free time together and it wasn’t okay for them to do that in front of the boys. They were both happier now.
Nearly three and a half months ago, she’d met Brandon, a computer engineer that worked in the city and had a divorce under his belt and two kids of his own as well. At first, she’d taken his number with the intent of remaining friends, but as they got to know each other, she found herself more and more intrigued with what made him tick, and now they were seeing each other.
After two months, it was serious enough that she wanted to introduce him to the team, which was a little nerve-wracking considering she hadn’t introduced anyone to them in 10 years. The knock at the door ripped her out of her thoughts. “Hey, babe,” she said, as she opened the door to reveal her new boyfriend. “Nervous?”
“A bit,” he laughed. “How could I not be? Your teammates have known Will for your entire relationship and I’m the new guy. Are we outright saying that we’re dating or am I a “friend” for right now?”
JJ wasn’t quite sure. She didn’t really want the questions right now - the inevitable ones that came with a new relationship and a member of the BAU. “I would say let’s just go with friends for now. My friends mean well, but they can get a little invasive when someone starts a new relationship.”
“Sounds good,” he chuckled. He pressed a kiss to her hairline and helped her get the rest of dinner ready while they waited for her team to arrive.
Nearly 20 minutes later, everyone began to show up. Of course Spencer was first, always the most prompt of the group, followed by Luke, Tara and Matt, and then Emily, Rossi, and lastly Garcia, who always seemed to leave first and end up arriving the latest. “Everyone, this is my friend Brandon.”
“Nice to meet you,” he said, giving everyone a small wave as they sat down at the table. “JJ’s told me all about you.”
Everyone seemed friendly, but more than a bit curious. She’d said friend, but nearly all of them assumed that the two had been seeing each other after JJ’s separation from Will. “Tell us a little bit about yourself, Brandon,” Tara said. She assumed he’d delve into talking about his former singlehood of marital status, the way a significant other word, but JJ must’ve prepped him for the onslaught of questions he’d receive from her friends.
“Well, I work as a computer engineer in the city with Integration Innovation, Inc. I specialize in cyber security. Our company actually works in conjunction with the Department of Defense a lot,” he started, delving into the varying aspects of his job.
As he spoke, Garcia immediately took a liking to him, because well, he was a computer guy, and she was brilliant technical analyst and former hacker. “I can tell you that I already like you,” Garcia laughed. “Any fellow computer nerd is a friend of mine.”
It was mainly the more senior members of the team that grilled Brandon on everything from his job to where he met JJ to whether or not he knew what Henry and Michael’s favorite colors and movies were (Spencer asked all the questions regarding the boys, because if someone else was getting close to his godsons, Spencer needed to make that someone was worthy.)
Somehow, the topic of divorce came up, and Rossi mentioned that he had three under his belt, though it wasn’t something he was proud of. “You ever been divorced, Brandon?” He asked, his smile knowing and mischievous as he tried to suss out how the two might get along with significant exes.
“Unfortunately, yes,” he said, “My wife and I split about a year ago. I work a lot because we’re contracted with the DoD, and apparently me being away a lot meant she had license to sleep with the cable guy.”
Rossi hissed, feeling sorry he’d asked. “My condolences.”
“Yea,” Brandon shrugged. “It hurt at the time but now I kind of look at it like “wow, I can’t believe I got stuck in the middle of real life bad porno.” That got a chuckle from everyone at the table. “We have two kids that we share custody of, twins Ella and Evan.”
As if he knew that children were being brought up, Henry walked outside to grab a glass of water. He’d eaten earlier and was playing a video game while Michael watched before heading to bed. Heading over to the table, he said hello to everyone, giving them hugs and getting squeezed to death by his Uncle Spencer. “Hi Brandon,” he said.
“Hey Henry. How’d your homework go?”
“It’s all done! Thanks for helping me the other day.”
“Anytime, kiddo.”
Before heading back inside to play with Michael, he gave JJ a kiss. “Is Brandon spending the night again?”
JJ and Brandon closed their eyes. They’d been doing an awful job of avoiding the topic of them dating to begin with, but Henry had unequivocally just spilled the beans. “Yea, Henry,” she laughed. “Brandon’s staying tonight.”
Brandon was busted anyway, so he let it go and asked Henry if he would be up for the four of them going to breakfast in the morning. “Yes! I want chocolate chip pancakes!” And with that, he ran inside.
Silence filled the room, though smiles were abound. “So, ummm,” JJ said awkwardly, “Yea, Brandon and I are seeing each other.”
Rossi laughed out loud, and the rest of the team just snickered under their breaths. “JJ, we’ve known each other for nearly 15 years. Were we born yesterday?”

The Penrose Triangle
Part 5
As the months wore on, Spencer’s attention drew away from his own troubles (and of course the ever-present words) and toward his mother. All the love in the world couldn’t keep her mind from slipping away slowly – and it broke his heart. It weighed him down more than any words ever could, so he did what any loving son would.
Day in and day out, Spencer searched high and low for something that would help his mother. There was no cure for Alzheimer’s – at least not yet, but there were remedies and treatments that staved off the worst of it for a period of time, and besides her own son, it was her mind that Diana Reid prided herself on. Even if she couldn’t remember him, he wanted her to have some control over her own mind.
Scouting for helpful remedies was much more difficult than he could’ve possibly imagined, but eventually he found a place in Houston, Texas that was conducting a trial. If he could get her in, and she wasn’t on the placebo end of things, she might have a change for a more lucid, if not longer life, and at this point, that’s all either of them could hope for.
Hotch had been very accommodating when it came to giving him time off, but then like so many before him, he had to leave as well. Although it pained him to see another mentor go, this one he had understood more than most. With Scratch after Hotch, he could no longer risk the possibility that Scratch wouldn’t come after Jack, and with Haley already lost to one madman with a desire for driving Aaron Hotchner over the brink, Jack’s life stood above all else, so they went into witness protection in the hopes that Jack would live a long and fulfilling life. That left someone else from the team to step into the role of Unit Chief, and he couldn’t have picked anyone better than Emily. With her experience at Interpol and her experience with and love for the team, she was a perfect fit.
She excelled of course, and she also gave him all the time he needed to find accommodations for his mother. When he took off, he knew they were bringing in another agent, someone to fill the vacancy, but of course, not the shoes, of one of his best friends, Derek Morgan, but he hadn’t met the man yet, so today would be that day.
Finally back from setting his mother up in Houston, he was back at work. There were donuts on the conference room table when he walked in, and although life hadn’t been kind to him lately, he felt like things might’ve finally been on the upswing. His mother was in a great facility, and he was eating his favorite donut. What could possibly have been better? He nearly got lost in thought while he was waiting for the rest of the team to come in, but he was interrupted by deft footfalls.
When he turned around, he saw a man he presumed to be Luke Alvez, the new team member he hadn’t met yet. “No handshakes, right?” He asked, his smile wide and teeth whiter than snow. “Your reputation precedes you.”
“As does yours,” he said with a smile. “Dr. Spencer Reid.”
“Luke Alvez.”
Although he’d always considered himself attracted to both men and women, attracted to personality and intelligence above all else, he’d never found himself immediately attracted to a man. But as Luke stood in front of him, there was something about Luke that put him at ease. Before his mind could wander, the rest of the team came in and got them started on their case of the week, or weeks as sometimes the case had been.
---
Luke fit in very well with the team. He had a great relationship with Garcia, even though she would deny it until the cows came home. They’d bicker like brother and sister. Emily respected. He was great with Henry and Michael when he met them, so JJ loved him. Rossi and Stephen appreciated his expertise as well. After all, Rossi was the one who had convinced him to join the team in an official capacity. There was nothing about Luke Alvez that didn’t fit in well with the dynamic they already had going.
Spencer couldn’t tell if Emily had noticed the spark in his eyes when he first met Luke, or if it had just been convenient, but he and Luke had been paired off a number of times since he’d joined the team, and every time, he found himself rambling on and on about cases, TV shows, and really anywhere that his train of thought stopped, but the difference with Luke was that he always seemed to be listening – truly listening.
Any one could see that Spencer Reid loved his teammates and that his teammates loved him. They would bleed and had bled for each other, but not everyone truly understood or cared to understand Spencer’s ramblings, but Luke was different. Not only did he listen; he seemed truly interested in what he had to say. After a while, their car rides weren’t silent, like so many before them. Instead, on their way to witnesses’ houses and police departments, Luke would take the wheel and Spencer would sit in the passenger seat, talking in perpetuity about whether or not Steven Moffat would ever give The Doctor a real name (Spencer pondered this but Luke had never seen the show), whether Lord Petyr Baelish was a Faceless Man or not (something both firmly believed) or whether Ferris Bueller was just a figment of his friend Cameron’s imagination. They’d debate crazy fan theories about their favorite TV shows, both loved Game of Thrones, while Luke watched a show called Boardwalk Empire and Spencer, of course, watched Doctor Who.
Luke promised to introduce Spencer to Boardwalk Empire one day and in turn, he’d watch Doctor Who with Spencer, something he couldn’t even fathom. The only person who watched the time-traveling doctor with him was Garcia. Maybe he could get Luke and Garcia to come over and watch…or maybe not because they’d probably bicker like little kids.
Either way, it felt nice to have someone around that truly seemed interested in what he had to say, whether it was about work, or whether it was just about something that made him happy. Whenever Luke would look at him, his eyes wide with interest at his statistic of the hour, Spencer would feel little butterflies fluttering around his stomach. On top of him being kind and funny, Spencer couldn’t help but notice how handsome he was, and on more than one occasion, he’d found himself wondering what it would be like to fall asleep on his shoulder, comforted knowing that he was loved unconditionally. It was still in the back of his mind – that idea of long-lasting love, but it hadn’t fought to the front until he met Luke. He wondered if Luke felt the same or if it was one-sided.
Still – he didn’t really have time for that now.
For now, his mother needed him, and she’d taken a turn for the worse, so every few months he’d travel down to Mexico to procure the supplement that seemed to be helping his mother. It wasn’t illegal in the United States – not strictly, but it wasn’t exactly legal either, so he kept it under the radar. He knew he could lose his job for what he was doing, but there was nothing he wouldn’t risk for his mother, so long as she was alive.
Each time he went, he was careful. He talked to as few people as he could while still obtaining what he needed, but somewhere along the line, he took a wrong step and landed in Mexican jail cell accused of murder, which he knew he didn’t commit, but he also couldn’t remember a damn thing about the previous twelve hours.
Now, here he was, half-drugged on what, he wasn’t sure, with no remembrance of what happened the day before, accused of murder, and the only that mattered to him was getting back to his mother and the BAU – his home.
When, not if, he got out of this mess, he promised himself he’d do the one thing he’d always been so afraid of – he’d take a chance on love. Luke didn’t know how he felt, but Spencer had to know.
---
Shortly after being released from the prison in Mexico, he was granted trial in the United States and was set for arraignment. He couldn’t say he wasn’t worried, because of course he was, any sane man would be, but he knew he had his family at his back. JJ was helping him with his mother while he sorted this whole thing out, and Rossi had already said that he’d post bail whether it was $100,000 or Rossi had to sell his mansion to do it; he’d do it happily.
That’s why his heart nearly exploded as the gavel hit the table and he was denied bail. Turning back toward his friends had been the worst decision he’d made thus far. Seeing their helpless faces and knowing there was a decent chance he wouldn’t make it out of prison alive made him nearly collapse. The only things keeping him upright were the guards on either side of him.
On his way to the prison, he went numb. How could anyone believe they’d end up in a place like this? Especially someone like him. For more than a decade, he’d spent his days putting people behind bars, and now he was going there himself.
“You’re going to need to take that off,” the guard said, bringing out of his self-defeating thoughts and toward the bandage he’d had on for so many years.
Spencer had to ask for clarification. “What? I can’t.”
“Unless there is a medical reason for it to be there, which according to the in-house doctor, there isn’t, then it needs to come off.”
He swallowed hard, his mouth going dry at the prospect of taking the bandage off. When he did, he’d see the words – the ones that he’d been avoiding for years. As he unwrapped the bandage, he imagined what they might say. He both hoped and dreaded that they’d be the words he remembered.
And there they were.
~No handshakes, right? Your reputation precedes you.~
Luke.

Becoming Real: Strain
In this installment of Becoming Real, Diana and Michael have been married for a little over six months. It’s been a busy six months for the BAU, so it’s been hard. @coveofmemories @the-slytherin-ice-queen @cosmicjennifer @mxolh @ultrarebelheart @remember-me-forever-silent-angel @tinyplanet-explorers @burnbrightdoll
Tumblr media
                                                                ----
Nearly six months had passed since their wedding day, and they were more in love than ever. But it was ridiculously hard for either of them to show it. Diana’s life in medical school was consistent, but hectic, and Michael’s schedule with the Bureau wasn’t a schedule at all. In six months, they’d probably spent about a month of it together.
Since the wedding, JJ had retired, as had Luke, but Spencer and Emily still remained for another year or so.  “How do you deal with it dad?” Diana asked. “When I was growing up, you were apart all the time. How did you make a marriage work?”
“It’s hard,” Luke replied. Being married to a member of the BAU wasn’t easy. “But nothing really is. I love your daddy, more than anything else in this world except you. You’re tired before you ask,” he said quickly, knowing exactly how she’d react.  “We work at it. Every day. Both of you are very headstrong, very determined people, so you have lives outside of each other.”
“We should,” she said. Having one another’s lives completely entangled with the other wasn’t good either. Diana just wished there was a little more of a balance than what they were currently living.
Luke laughed, wondering how the little girl from 22 years ago turned into the beautiful, strong woman before him. “Absolutely. But because of that, and especially the jobs you’ve chosen, you just have to commit to giving 100 percent of yourself at work, and then giving the same amount to Michael whenever you do have the time together. You remember Alex Blake, right? She comes around every so often to catch up with Daddy?”
“Yea, of course,” she nodded. Alex Blake had been another one of her daddy’s mentors before she was born. After a really heavy case, she ended up leaving to pursue other things and spend more time with her husband.
“Well, she and her husband had that kind of a marriage. Apparently, Daddy didn’t even know she was married the first few months she worked there. But they both had things they loved.” He chuckled, realizing the similarity between Alex and James, and Diana and Michael. “In their case, he was the doctor and she was the agent, but they made it work, because they both put their all into their work and then when they were together, they acted like two kids who’d just fallen in love because they put their all into each other. It’s how Daddy and I work too, we just happen to have worked together for a very long time.”
When she thought about it like that it made more sense. Last time she’d seen Alex, she’d been with her husband and had marveled at the fact that they, like her dads, still looked like two teenagers in love. “I think the reason they, and your Daddy and I, are still in love like we are is because we have that kind of separation. Now, don’t get me wrong, there are some months that Michael will just have back-to-back cases. That happened with us too, but for the most part it won’t be like this, and you’ll have more time together.”
“I hope so,” Diana sighed. She knew he was right, but Michael had been gone, not home for more than a couple days at a time, for about three months now, so she really, really missed him.
“How about you and I go to lunch before you go to class today?” Luke asked, seeing Diana’s still sour mood. She nodded, wanting to get her mind off things for a little bit. Class would do the rest later. “And as for how you’re feeling, I would let Michael know as soon as he gets home. Conversation is at least 80 percent of a marriage. If not more.” It had taken Spencer years of Luke telling him to talk out his feelings before he did it without being asked, so Luke couldn’t help but laugh.
“Thanks, Dad.”
---
It was another couple of weeks before Spencer and Michael returned from work for more than a couple of hours, but the Section Chief said that the BAU deserved a week or so off, so barring any extreme emergencies, he would send another team out so they could have some time off.
Spencer had texted shortly after Michael, saying how much he loved and missed her. During the week they’d all get together and have breakfast together, but for now, he missed her Dad and wanted to go home. She couldn’t help but smile at the message. If she and Michael were as in love as her dads still were 30 years down the line, she’d count herself blessed.
“Hey, baby,” Michael said sleepily as he walked through the door. “I’ve missed you.” He practically fell into her arms.
“I’ve missed you too.” She pulled him towards the couch and cuddled into his lap. “Can we talk? And that’s not a bad thing, I just need to say how I’m feeling.”
As Michael nodded, his eyes widened a bit. He was trying to stay awake. “I’ve really missed you,” she said, heaving an enormous sigh. “I know our jobs are what they are and everything, and that marriage is work, and you are the only one I wanna work with, but I really miss you.”
“I miss you too,” he said, pulling her head into his neck. “How about we start doing what we were doing when I was in college? I can text or call before I go to bed. We’ll send each other videos. Even the small things could help when we have so much time apart.”
Diana turned around, placing herself in his lap as she straddled his thighs. “I’d like that. I want us to be as in love as my dads are and your parents are when we’re their age.”
“We just have to keep acting like we’re dating. Forever. Because I honestly think that’s the key,” Michael laughed, bringing her hands up to his and kissing them. “So when I come home, I’ll surprise you every now and then. We’ll send each other videos. And oh, how about this? Before bed every night when I’m away, we’ll record ourselves reading a page of a book we choose. That way, if we can’t talk, we can at least hear each other’s voices.”
Diana melted into his chest, her fears immediately subsiding. As long as they had each other and continued to communicate, they’d be fine, no matter how difficult things got. Without words, she told him that reading to each other sounded wonderful. They’d done it when they were dating and it was one of the many reasons she fell in love with her childhood crush.
Leaning in on her knees, she pressed a kiss to his lips before traveling down the side of his neck, stopping momentarily when he bit back a moan. “Now how about we go inside? I’ve missed my hubby.”
“You don’t need to ask me twice.”
