I'm sincerely very happy for anyone who is enjoying the show but every time I see takes that the show has improved the book characterizations or that the book characters are underdeveloped in comparison to the show...

#our experiences are very different lmao #pjo show crit #sure the show isn't completely out yet #but id argue that the characters (namely the trio) seem way more developed and well-rounded in the book by this point in time (episode 4) #and look im not saying every change the show has made is bad #but by and far there has yet to be a change to characterization that feels like an IMPROVEMENT from the source material lmao #the closest contender I'd say is show Percy does seem a tad angrier than book Percy #but again I wouldn't call that an improvement... its just different and I think that /change/ works because it feels like the same essence #but even that has had some issues because I feel like the show has inadvertently cut down some of Percy's canon book empathy here and there #I think the show has nailed Annabeth's pride and intelligence and her warped worship of her mother #... but they've also made her hyper competent to the point that she's not making half of the mistakes she did in the book #which ISNT good because book annabeth is smart but she isn't infallible #its a big point that she has the theoretical intelligence but none of the real world experience/application #she gets tricked by medusa and goes to visit the Arch just cause she loves architecture and that's okay!! she's twelve and a nerd! #I also dont like that they've cut/toned down her little crush on Luke #actually they've not even showcased the familial bond between annabeth and Luke either in the show so like lmao #and then grover #by now grover's fear of failure and repeating this past mistakes and wanting a license has already been acknowledged in the books at least #in the show?? not so much #and his canon book suspicions and wariness of medusa... were given to annabeth #like medusa in the book was Grover's moment to shine cause his instincts were right! #and in the book fight he even very intentionally attacked medusa #but his highlights there were cut completely in the show #and finally sally #...idk who that is in the show but that's NOT my sally jackson #percy jackson #mine

I love that, regardless of any other fey nature or trickery, Morri genuinely seems to love Fearne. There's no question in her greeting that she does see her as her own granddaughter, as much as Fearne sees Morri as her grandmother unequivocally.

i have to believe she coined the term, because she’s also the one who turned remnant into a defiant point of pride, and can you imagine the miscommunication this caused when they were married. salem says semblance and means “when someone draws upon their own soul to manifest the true essential form of their self into the world” and ozma says semblance and means “the last dying embers of real magic (sad!)” and i don’t think either of them has any idea that they are not. defining the word the same way

#the ultimate cosmic joke of salem’s existence is her protege fixated on magic specifically *because* salem told her to be wary of it #she does the same thing in the grimm episode like the moral of the hunters children as ozpin wrote it #is ''studying grimm is pointless you have to just kill them'' #salem with irony thick enough to choke: grimm having the capacity to learn from their experiences is perverse. killing is all that matters. #i just KNOW she read his anthology cover to cover out of morbid curiosity and experienced the full spectrum of human emotion while doing so

I'm now at the portion of CQL that overlaps with the volumes of the novel that I read last summer, and for all the nonsense brought by the combination of CQL's adaptation changes + reluctance to fully commit to them, I really and truly do prefer these iterations of the characters, especially WWX. I just watched the episode where JC catches him in Qinghe, and it had me chewing on the walls! The show's chronological storytelling let us see their relationship's intensity and tragic deterioration, and it delivers on making this confrontation EXTREMELY FRAUGHT for both of them. JC unleashes 16 years of unprocessed grief and anger as WWX tries his damnedest to avoid it, and the shadow of JYL's death looms over both of them. Even though the dialogue in the novel is nearly identical, the mutual urgency isn't there; JYL is never mentioned (beyond JC reminding WWX that he is the reason JL's parents are dead), and WWX himself has no emotional response whatsoever to any of it, save for an offhand mention that he was nostalgic for the Lotus Pier of his childhood. JC might as well be having an argument with an imaginary WWX in the shower. There's zero tension there. Information has to be revealed and withheld differently with the non-chronological story structure, of course, but there are ways to hint at a character being impacted by and reacting to past experiences without saying outright what those experiences are, and that is simply Not Happening sufficiently for me with anything involving WWX's platonic and familial relationships in the novel. And if you wanted more on the relationships between characters who aren't WWX? lol good luck!

#in fairness the novel DOES talk about JYL in that same chapter after WWX and JL part ways #but it's purely in the context of exposition--JYL was WWX's source of info for how he came to Lotus Pier #there's no consideration of JYL as a person (or even just of what she meant to the two brothers) at all #and then in the first two volumes GENERALLY there's no concern in WWX's inner monologue about anything else #not about WQ or the Wen remnants or how their deaths were accelerated by his accidental murder of JZX #the show drops the ball on that too but at least in the second episode WWX thinks about WQ and the Dafan Wen (before even seeing WN!) #and that's why I couldn't with the novel: either the narrative isn't as interested in the ramifications of all that as I am #or WWX himself doesn't give a shit #and neither bodes well for me having a good time! #masala necromancy wizard hour

I think maybe my favorite thing about Doctor Slump is how the characters will sometimes react in a way you don't entirely understand and then later the show takes care to establish specific moments, hurts and situations that explain exactly why the character struggles with this pattern of behavior or this fear etc.

It's shows how intimately the writers understand these characters and it's why the mains feel so fleshed out and alive
