ep 3
Uh forgot to stop for notes for a while.
Jim and Olu are very cute.
Also Gnoissiene no 5 under Stede cleaning up the cabin, like, I can't.
Okay so this is Hornigold giving Ed therapy or something.
The fucking Innkeeper my god.
Oh yeah this dude is a ghost for sure.
I am honestly confused about what happened with Ed, like the scene where she said "they killed him" and showed something I can't tell what it was? I watched it twice. So Ed is in the afterlife-ish...interesting.
(Oh I figured out it was his body honestly it didn't make visual sense to me)
God this show.
Like I'm nearly crying over Stede calling to Ed and then the fucking MERMAID thing and I'm laughing and almost crying and fuck then the episode ends.
Though the trailer kinda ruined the tension there of course.
So the first three episodes are Ed's journey of suicidal ideation and his inability to make a final fatal decision, leading up to him realizing he hates himself and wants to die but at the last minute he hears Stede calling to him and decides he had something to live for.
And NOW we get to go into the rom com awkward reunion banter and stuff.
Very grateful for them airing 3 eps at once and obvious why they felt they had to.
Okay...gonna like breath for a bit.

If I may ask, I a bit curious on the timeline of your Rwby rewrite project, you made videos on a Rwby rewrite before but with a different name(s because I can’t remember if it had more than one name) What changed with the name? In fact what change about production after the details video about a Rwby rewrite(hopefully you know what I talking about) It ok if it just speak in general terms than any details, just interest in your process!
This is a good opportunity to talk about my history with RWBY AUs from start to finish, so thanks for this ask.
I first got infected with the AU bug during Volume 3, when shit started going down in Episode 6 and my mind was abuzz thinking about how the story was going to unfold. This led me to create Shattered Tomorrow, which was about the predicted events and aftermath of the Fall of Beacon.
Tumblr media
This later moved to RWBY: Visions, which was just a catch-all term that my other AUs would be grouped into at the time (much like how Star Wars: Visions is a collection of AUs, oddly enough). I made a few videos of it, as well as a subreddit which is now dead since I transitioned my community to YouTube instead, where this sort of AU/rewrite content reaches more people.
Tumblr media
However, I soon released a video that more or less kickstarted my RWBYTubing days in earnest: RWBY Needs A New Beginning. The large positive reception I got for it led me to create a Discord server to discuss the project, at which point it grew into a community group project, and was renamed into RWBY: Cherish.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
However, it was my first time leading a community project, so it encountered numerous fatal hurdles - namely the "too many cooks" problem. Everyone was pitching idea, writing docs and proposing characters to populate the world, but none of it was translating into real, tangible results. It lost steam about a year in and I grew disillusioned, especially after the conclusion of Volume 6. I was very close to dropping the show and leaving the fandom entirely.
I decided to step away and took a month-long break from the project and anything RWBY. It took me a while for me to recentre myself and start looking at my ideas again without premature outside influence. What did I really want from this project? Why do I keep returning to it?
I started sketching again, reclaiming pride in my own ideas again. Then, I discovered Cold Kingdom's album, which sparked my first real concepts for what would become RWBY: Remnants. But at the time, I created these under the placeholder title: We Are The Hunt.
Tumblr media
I started gaining confidence in my creative self again, and I regained motivation to start over; more importantly, I got back my love for RWBY, and it was here I realised that I'll never be truly able to leave it behind until I put out my version of it for the world. I put everything I knew about this new AU into a few illustrations, used a song I liked that conveyed the tone I pictured, edited them together, and finally released the first trailer for RWBY: Remnants.
youtube
For the first time, I had put out the ideas in my head into something tangible, something real. Something I could watch and share with others. It wasn't just a video of abstract promises, of me talking about how cool it would be in concept. Why spend all that effort describing something with the same effort I could use to make it a reality?
I realised that while others enjoyed my ideas and were passionate enough to help with it, I was the only person who could be responsible for it, and only I knew what I wanted it to be. With all those lessons in mind, I went ahead and launched RWBY: Remnants.
Tumblr media
It's been a journey of over 6 years now, and it's still going. People who dismiss my AU work so far as a string of failed projects fail to realise that creation is an ever-changing thing. It changes its nature along with the person making it. Someone who makes something that's the same from start to finish has not learned anything about it or themselves from the process - they're making something stagnant, and a stagnant work reflects its creator.
I can't say that I'll stick with my RWBY AU forever, especially given RWBY's uncertain future, or even that I'll be able to finish all I wanted to accomplish. But as long as I'm still doing it, I've not regretted a single second.
This may be a project based on RWBY, but it's RWBY told through my own eyes. I count myself very lucky that a lot of people want to see me make it a reality, so I hope by telling it, I can inspire other people that they can do the same. You don't have to be a giant company or a team of hundred.
In my case, I just needed a small group I could trust to help me make it happen, and a lot of time. I'm grateful for that.
The one thing I learned the most in this experience is one word: Resolve. It's not a glorious, inspirational thing: I'm not pushing myself over a mountaintop or running a heartstopping marathon: but somehow, in spite of myself, I just draw a little every week.
I tell myself I shouldn't give up - not because of right or wrong - but because I know this is something that I will always return to. Something that will always welcome me back. Something about RWBY and this project constantly draws me back into it, like an unanswered question. It's an unusual drive I don't expect others to have, but whatever it is, something like that may exist for you in another form. I don't know if you wanna call it a life calling or whatever, but it's just... the thing you keep coming back to. It's like your inclination; your nature.
If I'm a pencil, it's in my nature to draw or write, even if I only take myself out of the drawer every month or so to do it. It doesn't change my character or my morals. I just do the thing, and the thing feels right to do.
6 years on, that's what working on this project feels to me at this point. Part of me wants to prove something to myself, and to share something with the world. But I think with enough consideration, I can probably live without those things. But even without them... I'm still going to do the thing. Because it feels right to do the thing. I like doing RWBY things, and I don't see a reason to stop anytime soon.

First things first, I'm somewhat bouncing off of the theory @crows-of-buckets posted about Neuvillette, mainly because they portray the imagery of the new Fontaine trailer so well and also, I feel like it's only right to mention them since it's their post that made me decide that I wanted to post my own theory. I should also note, their theory touches on Khaenria and Celestia. I will not as I'm not too familiar and this will just be focused and what I think the role he'll occupy will be, story-wise, and perhaps Fontaine's overall archon quest theme.
I'm going to recap some points made by crows-of-buckets first and then explain my view of the details given.
They mention that in the newest Fontaine trailer, Neuvillette during the scene where Neuvillette and Clorinde is walking down the hallway, he steps out of the shadows and the light reflecting onto him resembles prison bars.
Tumblr media
There is also the scene of Furina/Focalors wanting to see a real twist while holding the burning remains of a photo's borders in a way that frames Neuvillette.
Tumblr media
crows-of-buckets believe that Neuvillette will be imprisoned somehow. And I agree, but for different reasons.
I'm gonna take a step back before I continue. In every region we've visited so far in Teyvat, each archon had a right-hand in someway. What I mean by this, is there is a character who shares an element with the archon of their region, and helps the archon achieve their goals in one way or another. They also most likely have a high-ranking position of some kind.
So far there has been:
Venti - Jean
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Zhongli - Ningguang
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ei - Yae Miko
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Nahida - Alhaitham
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Jean is of high status in the Knights of Favonius as the Acting Grand Master, and helped Venti calm Devalin.
Ningguang is the Tianquan of the Liyue Qixing, and assisted in protecting Liyue so Zhongli could fulfill his final contract. (Assuming she knows his real identity, which I believe she does).
Yae Miko is the Head Priestess of the Grand Narukami Shrine, and used every trick up her sleeve to help Ei and end the Vision Hunt Decree.
Alhaitham is the Scribe of the Akedemiya, and was once Acting Grand Sage, and assisted in rescuing Nahida from the previous Grand Sage.
They all also assisted the traveler in their journey, one way or another.
To bring this full circle, Neuvillette is the Chief Justice of Fontaine, he most likely has a hydro vision (look at him) and he very clearly values what Focalors stands for.
With him (most likely) checking off all the boxes, this makes him Focalors's right hand.
We know in every region the traveler becomes a criminal or wanted individual somehow, so he most likely will be here as well, so why would Neuvillette assist the traveler as each right-hand before him has done?
He doesn't agree with Fontaine's legal system.
All of this is just personal speculation at this point, but I believe the story of the archon quest will have to do with what is considered justice in the eyes of the law and in the eyes of moral individuality, if that makes sense.
An example to explain my point would be:
"A woman stole an item from the store."
Justice in the eyes of the law would see her as guilty, because she broke the law, thus she is a sinner/criminal. But that's only on the surface.
See that woman was actually a single mother, she just barely makes enough to keep her home and maybe buy groceries. She can't produce enough milk for her infant child, so out of desperation she steals baby formula.
In the eyes of an individual, her actions make her just. Is she committing a crime? Yes, but it's to provide for someone who cannot provide for themselves, thus it is a commendable action.
A lot of the time, the ones who commit a crime are the only desperate individuals trying to survive the shitty hand they've been dealt. Trying to survive poverty, illness, unsafe homes, abuse, etc.
That's why I think Neuvillette will help the traveler, because he saw how the legal system is fatally flawed. That it works in only black and white and not in the shades of grey it actually is. That the legal system is unjustly persecuting the poor, ill, weak, etc.
Focalors is the God of Justice, but if Fontaine is unjust, then the right-hand will need to make it just.
I think at some point Neuvillette may become an antagonist to Focalors like how Yae Miko was to Ei. I also think, to make it interesting, that at first he was oblivious in some way but had his world view shattered. That's why he steps out of darkness and into prison bars, he goes from being free but being part of the problem, to risking imprisonment -potentially even being actually imprisoned- while trying to fix his mistakes. That's why I think he'll help the traveler, and that's what I think his role in the story will be.

⭐️Great News to my friends Of Fantasy Films & The Fox Demon Hulijing⭐️
Tumblr media
In my journey to China I stopped in Hong Kong and watched The Creation of the Gods I: Kingdom of Storms (封神第一部:朝歌风云)
Tumblr media
The Film is directed by Wuershan
📚It is the first film in the Creation of the Gods trilogy, adapted from the 16th-century fantasy novel Investiture of the Gods written by the Ming dynasty author Xu Zhonglin.
Tumblr media
I was a bit scared to go because lately I have been so disappointed to all the computer tricks and thin storylines such as the House of the Dragon💩 This was made with big 💰and the story is great!
Tumblr media
Without any spoilers (🚨beware Of any trailers also that what I have liked) Highly recommended ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Tumblr media
🫀If you have followed me earlier you might know that I post about the witches, femme fatales, folklore, art and history from the psychological perspective or actually psychoanalysis. In this film such a character is the Fox demon. In Korea it is called Gumiho, in Japan Kitsune.
🎥In Chinese screen Hulijing has been seen for example in Painted Skin (Chinese: 畫皮) 2008. Typically fox spirits were seen as dangerous, but some of the stories are love stories between human & demon, like that one.
🦊Belief in fox spirits Is still alive & well in some areas of Asia. From the psychoanalytical view these castration fantasies are really interesting. However in China Demons are part of nature, even where there is no fox demon, no village can be established. It should be added that like in this movie the evil is in men and the human desire is the key point, Fox is just answering to that. Connection to witch believes is that this succubus-like character steals the male energy, can cause impotence or kills men (eats their hearts). A lot like in the witch lore & demonology.
Tumblr media
A young fox can appear as a young woman. An older one can take either form. The millennial fox becomes a celestial being. 💫
Tumblr media
You heard it first from Soul Sanitarium 🙏 follow for more

For what it's worth, I mostly still stand by everything under my old tags (Jaune/Cinder, Cinder's redemption, V10 predictions - although there's a few I drafted out in addition to whatever I did post on here), according to reading RWBY-the-show. I still maintain most of what we've seen was intended in one way or another (Ozlem, I/ronwood, the redemptions we've seen already, Jungian/alchemical based storytelling) since they're very early products of the show, even down to finer details like foreshadowing a future Ruby/Ozma reincarnation partner (V1/2 hints). The question is whether that proves true in whatever form the show survives in at this point because there are creative compromises which happen because of that.
Very clear elements of V9 suggest this was already beginning to happen (see: tonal abruptness from V8->V9, only picking up again at the halfway point e.g. when viewer drops always happen, which was where a twist was saved for) and I'd go so far as to contend what makes the pacing of E1-4 feel odd, but for some elements which seem highly suggestive of expected Jungian beats (visions of oneself in the caterpillar hut), is because it was specifically to draw in an audience which enjoyed Beacon hijinks but also newer viewers who want familiar tropey hijinks (and I think it is telling that beats of the volume especially compromised was the ending). And it didn't work. Then past that roadbump there's a tonal shift to something more familiar: serious narrative stakes and emotional journeys. And like, a suggestion of fraughtness.
This is a classic stunt of the average aggrieved RWBY fan, for the record. As far back as Volume 1 fans were complaining the show was 'deviating from the vision'. I remember it very clearly. Headcanons had already shaped around the character trailers. By V2 there were people unhappy with rushed production and animation errors and not enough of xyz trope and then there had been too much Jaune in the previous volume, so that was an endless fandom debate.
At a certain point with creative compromise it's no longer about compromise and more about what the creators are willing to let a work be, and that's just what it is: no crying for original intent, and instead time to come to terms with what it truly is. So I am never willing to pull the 'if only RWBY had not become creatively compromised' excuse, but I am hoping against hope that missteps in V9 were simply that - missteps - and if the show gets renewed, it's not on those terms, because they didn't work anyway to get it renewed. And I remember writing an unpopular post that the ongoing lampshading in the volume, and the clumsiness of the twee character writing was a clear, fatal compromise which was never going to win halfway fans over and was only going to alienate weirdoes like me. But then if the show happens to be renewed, and it reprises these elements, that - say - they want to cater to xyz fan demographic or they want to go back on the show which had been set up and had been realised across subsequent volumes - then I would admit defeat.
But then I don't know the ins and outs of the business side of the production anymore, and I think I am still in fantasyland where RWBY gets to be an independent production. So who really knows. I still think most of what I had to say on the topic of conceivable Jaune/Cinder was coherent, but in terms of alienating the fanbase, that ship is about as bad as you can get. Where their priorities are in renewal, if it happens, is uncertain. But then why renew RWBY if you can't do RWBY? Lol. But then, was Knightfall ever RWBY? I would like to know at least!

Corrupted Tzen armor - 3D Model
Tumblr media
Hi, It has been a while, once again! Sometimes, I am not sure what to share on Tumblr. I will try to keep sharing about my 3D journey. The next episode of Untold Tale of Pandaria (Pandaria Monogatari) is running well. The progress has been a bit slower than expected because of the sleeves that are custom and a nightmare to animate.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Talking about "nightmare", we finally arrived at That part that I wanted to give a try for a long time: a short horrific Japanese ghost movie! I am a huge fan of the Fatal Frame game series, and I also really enjoy the tones of Asian ghost stories and movies.
Tumblr media
(Note: This gif features a yokai, not a yurei or an onryo. But it is the less scary I found) In the machinima, I feel like I have the unique opportunity to play around with this! The whole scene in this Kaiki eiga style will be released apart to not scare the audience. Also, from the lesson learned from the prologue, I need to avoid multiple intrigues, to keep the narrative flow clear enough. So we will briefly see ghosts (many more elaborated and diverse models than below), and see later whom they torment and how they proceed.
Tumblr media
This long digression being done... Let's talk about the new model I made and its lore! (Finally) I have had the draft idea of this armor for a long time! In the lore of the machinima, the Tzen armor is a centuries-old artifact of the eponymous clan. It is thought to have been partly destroyed, just like most of the belongings of the disposed clan. The last warrior thought to have owned and worn the armor was Tho's father. Although Mei-Phang claimed that they saw it, altered but complete, in Tho's bedroom, during their teenage years (so about a decade after the execution of all the Tzen patriarchs). The armor is considered an artifact because it changes with the owner's will and absorbs the chi around, accordingly. The Tzen identified themselves with the Mountains of the South that can bring prosperity or devastation. The armor thus "embodies" that ambivalence.
Tumblr media
In the prologue, we could foresee that Tho chose a path of destruction, realizing way too late the disaster he'd caused.
Tumblr media
But this had consequences. And notably on the Tzen armor. In the "Notes about the Untold Tale" (written by one of my lorewalker OC, Wen-Long) states that the Tzen armor got corrupted with so much bad chi that it started wandering by night, more likely seeking for revenge. Older Mei-Phang would have to relocate their students, when the armor started causing a big safety concern. Yet, the armor never attacked Mei directly, unless they wear the official kimono of the Zhu clan.
Tumblr media
The customization work on this armor was pretty simple and straightforward. I started from an existing Huojin sentinel model that I rediscovered while playing (Han-zhu) on the PTR. (On the screenshot, you can see a hint regarding one of Han-zhu's first names, btw... :D).
Tumblr media
The original mesh of the model had few refinements to attenuate the plate-looking style. I then worked on the main additions: -add a wakidate on the kabuto (helmet) -refine the sode (shoulder pads) - add a kusazuri and a haidate (lower part) These additions were very simple but they gave a nice silhouette. I improved my retopology and seam marking, so the work on the kusazuri/haidate was much less painful than on Han-zhu's samurai armor in the prologue! The main work on this armor was the texturing that was almost completely remade from scratch. First I wanted Tho's eyes to be visible beyond the menpo (mask), but it looked like he was squinting, like, way too much! And it really messed up the frightening aura of the armor! XD
Tumblr media
So I decided to keep the eyes red-glowing and add Tho's "emblematic" red scarf, instead.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Cannot wait for the next episode (and little Kaiki eiga spinoff) to go live soon! Hope you enjoy this long post! Thank you if you read everything!! P.S. If you don't know yet about this machinima project, here is the trailer.

Movies I watched this Week # 154 (Year 3/Week 50):
I went crazy this week, but I managed to catch a bunch of good movies: ‘The teacher’s Lounge’, Bi Gan’s ‘A short Story’, ‘The Delinquents’, ‘Battleship Potemkin’, ‘Riders of Justice’, ‘Belle de Jour’, ‘Werner Herzog, Radical Dreamer’, ‘Crock of Gold’, ‘Jazz on a summer’s Day’... So, on average, more than one great film per day - It was worth it!
🍿
The Teachers' Lounge, a new, intense German school drama, with 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes. A conscientious and empathetic teacher tries to do right by her 7th grade students, when accusations of theft are raised against one of them. Her earnest attempts to stand up for fairness and truth, cause everything around her to unravel.
The trailer doesn't hint at how tight and absorbing it is. 9/10.
🍿
3 Chinese shorts by Bi Gan:
🍿 A Short Story is the latest spectacular film from the director of 'Long Day's Journey Into Night'. Magical realism of the most dreamy of emotions. Mystical visions about a black cat, a burning scarecrow in the fog (Photo Above), and a search for "the most precious thing in the world". The search brings the cat to meet 3 figures: A dying robot, a demon magician, and a woman who eats noodles to forget her lover. It was commissioned by the president of a Chinese cat food company, a fan of Gan's work, who gave him complete freedom to create 'anything he wants'. 10/10.
🍿 "My son has the same watch..."
The poet and the singer (Aka Diamond Sutra), a black & white poem about a murder in the countryside.
🍿 Secret Goldfish (2016) is an even shorter poem, which can be viewed even without translation. The English subtitles are here.
🍿
The delinquents, another inexplicably weird Argentinian drama (that doesn't star Ricardo Darín). What a strange existentialist tale of two unremarkably boring bank tellers from Buenos Aires, Moran and Román. The bald one decides to steal a large sum of money from the bank, as a way to escape his soulless life, and in the process implicates his other dull colleague.
An unconventional 3 hours+ rambling metaphor that doesn't focus on a single story line, but instead leisurely jumps from one detail to another, with unconnected music choices that come and go as they please. Quirky, slow and absolutely immersive! 8/10.
🍿
2 Silent era classics:
🍿 First re-watch in 40 years: Eisenstein's epic masterpiece Battleship Potemkin, long considered to be the one of The greatest movies ever made. Still excitingly modern today - 9/10.
🍿 The Unchanging Sea, my first DW Griffith, about a fisherman who suffers from amnesia because of a wreck at sea. It was clearly shot around Malibu!
🍿
Because of this 'Can you teach me your favorite Indian dance moves?', I wanted some outrageously-colorful song and dance Bollywood ridiculousness. Bunty aur Babli is the answer to 'What if Bonnie and Clyde but in Hindi with lots of open shirt sexiness and belly dancing? Suspension of disbelief is required.
🍿
Christmas Special: Another re-watch of my favorite Anders Thomas Jensen's terrific thriller, Riders of justice. It perfectly works on every level: Action, a slice of Danish life, humor, depth, and it's also extremely humane. Always 10/10.
🍿
"I see you need a firm hand..."
After seeing the newly-edited trailer recently, I had to bask in another re-watch of Buñuel's masterful Belle de Jour, the most erotic of all masterpieces, with the coldest, most beautiful 23-year-old masochist in the world. 10/10.
🍿
Another re-watch: The French thriller Tell no one, based on a mystery novel by Harlan Coben, whose "novels often involve the resurfacing of unresolved or misinterpreted events in the past, murders, or fatal accidents and have multiple twists." François Cluzet is the chain smoking pediatrician, whose wife was murdered 8 years ago, when suddenly...
My previous review here.
🍿
2 Norwegian thrillers by Erik Skjoldbjærg:
🍿Insomnia, the original nightmare on which the Christopher Nolan film was remade. Young Bad Cop Stellan Skarsgård comes to arctic city Tromsø to solve a murder mystery, and screws it up, without getting caught. Norsk-Noir, which is not really dark, but blindingly bright, so bright that he can't fall asleep.
🍿 Pioneer is a manly offshore diving thriller, which stars 'Headhunters' Aksel Hennie. The only distinct feature of the story is the background, Norway in the early 80's, when vast oil reserved were discovered in the North Sea, and huge enterprises were ready to start drilling there. 3/10.
🍿
"This was a man!"
I'm not qualified to analyze Willie the Spear-Shaker, so I enjoyed the 1953 version of his Julius Caesar on its surface levels only. With Marlon Brando, James Mason and John Gielgud. Since Caesar was slain at the mid-point of the play, it was mostly about the guilt and justifications of the assassins, especially "Noble Brutus". Apparently, regicide and the political struggle for succession were themes current around 1600, at the time it was written.
[The main visuals I couldn't get over with are the large, decorative floor brushes the Roman centurions wore on top of their Galea helmets. They had to...]
🍿
The quiet earth, an odd post-apocalyptic sci-fi story about 'the last man on earth' from New Zealand. A man wakes up to find that there's nobody left on earth. He struggles with being alone, goes a bit crazy, (tries some cross dressing and playing God), Etc.
When I was a child, I thrived on a similar fantasy (minus the cross dressing), so I enjoyed the first half of the movie. Later on he finds two other survivors, and various 'scientific' explanations are offered, which made it all confusing and senseless.
🍿
Werner Herzog X 3:
🍿 "Werner is a mythological figure" says Wim Wenders, in the recent documentary Werner Herzog, Radical Dreamer. A fantastic, beautiful chronicle into the life and brain of one of the greatest living directors today, and possibly ever. I saw less than 20 of his 75 film output, and I really must get my shit together and go through the rest of this manic, visionary's extensive 'oeuvre'. The trailer. 10/10
"It's injustice in life that we do not have wings"...
🍿 Lessons of Darkness was his impressionistic, ethereal poem about the Kuwaiti oil fires after the first Gulf War. An out of body experience, like an alien that visits the nightmare landscapes and trying to understand its meaning. For some reason, 1992 audiences reacted furiously to this film when it was first screened, accusing it for anesthetizing the horrors of war. (Always blame the messenger!)
🍿 Portrait Werner Herzog, a 1986 self-portrait he did about himself, talking about some of his earlier films. It includes a conversation with his mentor Lotte Eisner, the film critic and co-founder of the Cinémathèque Française.
🍿
6 more documentaries:
🍿 "Fuck itself is the most popular word in the Irish vocabulary..."
I never heard of legendary Irish poet and "Nipple erector" songwriter Shane MacGowen until his recent death, having missed the whole Punk and Pogues eras. So the recent bio-pic Crock of Gold: A Few Rounds with Shane MacGowan was a revelation. But not for long. I am a new convert and started listening to all his terrific songs.
RIP, Shane MacGowan! 10/10.
🍿 Jazz on a Summer’s Day, a magnificent concert film of the 1958 Newport Jazz Festival. Selected for the National Film Registry, and scoring 100% on Rotten Tomatoes. It absolutely encapsulates most idyllic vibes of golden days of summer, and magic of the beautiful East Coast 1950's. And what a line-up: Thelonious Monk, Sonny Stitt, Anita O'Day, Dinah Washington, Gerry Mulligan, Chuck Berry, Louis Armstrong, and Mahalia Jackson with a magical finale of 'The Lord's Prayer'. 10/10.
🍿"Today I learned" about the alternative Monte Verità community outside Lucarno in Switzerland. It was an early-stage "hippy" commune which was established on an empty hill in the late 1890's. This settlement was a vegetarian, free-love, anti-bourgeois, nudist, feminist pacifist artist colony, out of which grew many of the later alternative lifestyle movements. The colony attracted many important early 1900's European figures, from Hermann Hesse, Carl Jung, Rudolph Steiner, Krishnamurti, Lenin and Trotsky, to DH Lawrence, Isadora Duncan, Paul Klee and so many others. There were outdoor group orgies, vegetarian food only, interpretive dance school, famous anarchists pursued by the secret police, Etc. Otto Gross, the mad psychoanalyst considered the founding grandfather of 20th-century counterculture, was one of the early founders.
Freak out is a fascinating 2014 Swedish documentary about the place. It draws parallels between that society these early utopians rebelled against with today's heartless capitalism. It uses too many re-enactments, but is still extremely interesting.
🍿 Al Nakba, a horrifying 4-part series about the tragedy of Palestine, produced by Al Jazeera, and told from the prospective of the dispossessed, as well as some of the "New Historians". Israelis were never told about 'the other side', and until today cannot bear the thought that the Jewish Homeland from its inspection was specifically formulated as a project of systematic ethnic cleansing.
🍿 "Seal's rectum tastes like nuts..."
The Most Remote Restaurant in the World is a beautifully-shot and unusual story. The opening of a two-star Michelin restaurant in Ilimanaq, Greenland, a tiny village of only 53 inhabitants. A nerve-racking race to prepare everything for the first night was as gripping as a Bourne thriller. Sourcing only local ingredients, freshly-killed whale, birds, was fascinating. The successful first night, in spite of all hurdles, was wonderful to watch.
Obviously, this was a vanity project by a wealthy restaurateur (from the Faroe Islands), which caters exclusively for the 1%'ers who are willing to fly from Hong Kong and elsewhere, take a long boat ride, just for the exclusive experience of a 10,000dkk dinner in the middle of nowhere. 7/10.
🍿 Tower is a mostly-animated retelling of the 1966 University of Texas tower massacre. For 18 years it stayed as the deadliest mass shooting in the US. It uses sleek clean-line rotoscoping to recreate the story and the interviews with survivors. But the pretty technique is highly distracting. The modern vernacular used by all the re-creators is specifically from 2016, not the 60's, and the whole experience ends up as an exercise in presentation. A banal and vapid experience. 1/10.
🍿
Laurel and Hardy's Babes in Toyland was the first movie I remember seeing on my own at the local cinema. It must have been 1961, and I was around 8 years old. 62 years later it's an agony to revisit. 1/10.
🍿
2 shorts:
🍿 Anima, a 2019 hallucinatory music video, directed by P T Anderson, to accompany Radiohead Thom Yorke's 3rd studio album. A wordless, dreamy mood piece.
🍿 The Typewriter (Supercut), Ariel Avissar’s homage to typewriters in film and television, set to Leroy Anderson's "The Typewriter".
🍿
Googlewhack used to be a term for 'searching two words on the old Google and being thrilled if only one result is returned'. Dave Gorman's Googlewhack Adventure is an infectious 2004 one man show, beautifully performed and highly documented, about life on the early internet. 10/10.
Gorman is an English comedian. His more recent show, Modern life is goodish, is similar in style, him manically jumping non-stop, meandering from one topic to another. The best part of these are the 'Found Poems'. F. Ex., Badger culling, Fijian currency, The God particle, Flag outrage, The horse meat scandal, Wedding rings for men, Marathon water theft, Dog show controversy, The new pound coin, Candy Crush scandal, Celeb chef, British bake off...
(Actually, they are all collected on one link, here)
🍿
Throw-back to the "Art project”:

Trailers: Nic Cage vampires and period pieces
The long-awaited film adaptation of a Judy Blume classic and Nic Cage is playing Dracula. Suffice to say, this batch of trailers is exciting...
Book Club 2: The Next Chapter: Are they even doing a book this time, or are they just going to Italy? The trailer didn’t make it clear.
Jesus Revolution: Kelsey Grammar is a preacher that reaches out to a group of hippies. And it’s apparently a true story.
A Good Person: Florence Pugh bonds with her would-be father-in-law (Morgan Freeman) after a fatal accident. Looks interesting if only for the cast alone.
Evil Dead Rising: Not interested.
Beau Is Afraid: A recluse (Joaquin Phoenix) finds himself on a strange journey back home. I can’t tell if this is horror or comedy or both.
Renfield: Dracula’s stooge (Nicholas Hoult) has finally had it with his job. Let’s be real, we only want to see this because Nic Cage is playing Dracula. Quite frankly, I can’t wait to see how he spins this one.
Your Place or Mine: Reese Witherspoon and Ashton Kutcher are two friends that swap homes. So kind of like The Holiday except not Christmas and they probably wind up together at the end?
Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret: The people that bitched about Turning Red being too “explicit” about puberty are going to be up in arms about this one. But the rest of us will gladly go see it.

“Badlands” Podcast Returns With Athletes Behaving Badly
Can you imagine a podcast that focuses on famous athletes behaving badly? The choices are endless. And no sport is exempt. From betting scandals in tennis to almost weekly scandals in the NFL, it’s sad that the high standards we set for our athletic heroes are too often crushed by reality.
That’s why the newest season of Badlands, hosted by Jake Brennan will be so delightful. New episodes premiere on October 26th across all podcast platforms. As a bonus, Amazon Music listeners can binge all 10 episodes of the new season, on-demand on 10/26.
The trailer for this season of Badlands is now live, and you can listen to it HERE.
Badlands is a true-crime podcast that dives deep into the real stories of some of the most famous popular culture figures, their real life crimes and scandalous careers. The all-new special season will tell the stories of legendary athletes whose misdeeds off the field are as unbelievable as some of their record-breaking plays. Brennan will explore stories about Michael Vick, Ray Lewis, Joe Namath, Robert Rozier, and Lawrence Taylor. And just in time for the World Cup, the show tackles the sins and scandals of the soccer world, with episodes on Diego Maradona, Andrés Escobar, and more.
The first episode on October 26th will focus on Ray Lewis and his journey from surviving in Baltimore, to a double murder in Atlanta.
The entire lineup for this season also includes deep dives into the following athletes:
EP 2: Michael Vick: Shallow Graves, Dogfights, and Self-Destruction
EP 3: Joe Namath: Rubbing Elbows with the Mafia, Accused of Assault, and the Birth of the Rockstar Gladiator
EP 4: Robert Rozier: Severed Heads, Death Angels, and the Devil’s Night Out
EP 5: Diego Maradona: Stolen Blood, Italian Gangsters, and the Hand of God
EP 6: Paul Gascoigne: A Dead Pool, a Police Standoff, and a Cold-Blooded Killer
EP 7: The Hillsborough Disaster: A Fatal Human Crush, Soccer Hooligans, and a Massive Cover-up
EP 8: Andrés Escobar: Laundered Drug Money, a Cocaine Kingpin, and the Goal that Led to a Shocking Murder
EP 9: Bruno Fernandes de Souza: Sex Parties, Paternity Tests, and Murder
EP 10: Lawrence Taylor: Broken Legs, Handshake Drugs, and Undercover Grandmas
Here’s an idea for the next season of Badlands. Dedicate an entire season to team owners acting badly. Imagine the possibilities. The podcast could even dedicate an entire season to Dan Snyder of the Washington Commanders.

Trailer
ABC News Studios announced today “Impact x Nightline,” its first weekly streaming news magazine. Each week, ABC News’ correspondents will leave the anchor desk and studios behind, taking viewers on a journey straight to the source of the stories everyone is talking about, plus the ones no one has even heard of yet. The program’s timely reporting will dive deep into the issues driving the conversations across America and spotlight real people affected by current events featuring hard-hitting investigative reports and profiles of newsmakers from around the globe.
“Impact x Nightline” will stream exclusively on Hulu beginning Thursday, Oct. 6, and is the second weekly offering from ABC News for streaming viewers, following the launch of “Power Trip” on Sunday.

The first episode centers on one of the most polarizing topics in America today: abortion. Building off “Nightline”’s Peabody-winning and Emmy®-nominated body of work, Emmy Award-winning correspondent Rachel Scott and the team go beyond the culture wars, fanning out across the country telling the stories of women, families and providers while exploring the complexity of the divisive issue. The documentary-style report includes personal abortion stories and activists on both sides, including TikTok creators — one pro-abortion rights and one anti-abortion rights — who are gaining national attention, and examines abortion in America in a post-Roe v. Wade world.
The premiere episode features celebrity voices, including actor, activist, and founder of “I Weigh,” Jameela Jamil, “Vanderpump Rules” star and advocate, Katie Maloney, actor and activist, Busy Philipps, and actor and advocate, Martha Plimpton. The documentary-style report includes pro-abortion rights activists and advocates Nancy Davis and Shedric Cole, parents who were unable to get an abortion in Louisiana after conceiving a fetus with a fatal anomaly, influencer Olivia Julianna and Mississippi Reproductive Freedom Fund Co-Founder, Laurie Bertram Roberts, as well as anti-abortion rights activists and advocates including influencer, Savannah Craven, and mother and advocate, Adrianna Puebla.
Upcoming episodes will tackle a wide range of topics, including examining what really happens to a town after a tragic school shooting, the business of American nostalgia, and even stories of crime, murder, mystery and more
“‘Impact x Nightline’ will break from the norm, showcasing immersive, story-driven reporting that you won’t see anywhere. If you are seeing it on ‘Impact,’ it probably means you haven’t heard about this side of the story,” said Justin Dial, vice president of streaming news. “The program will take the viewers to the frontlines of the story, reporting from anywhere in the world where the story happens.
Eman Varoqua is executive producer, and Candace Smith Chekwa is senior broadcast producer. “Impact x Nightline” is overseen by Justin Dial, vice president of streaming news, and Reena Mehta, senior vice president of streaming and digital content.
