so i finally watched rings of power... it's... not great, but not the worst thing I've ever watched from a purely entertainment pov. From a "this is adapted from tolkien" it's absolute shit lol, it has no heart and is cheesy in all the wrong, clearly unintentional ways, and the writing is an absolute mess. That being said! I love the diversity! I actually love all the created-for-show characters a LOT. Especially Nori. Nori my beloved child i lov u. The main characters I can't stand are the canon ones lol. Although Galadriel is growing on me but I'm very much annoyed by the changes they made to her character and the absence of Celeborn X(. And miriel??? I either read the silm wrong or they invented her character for the show so they could have "more stereotypically strong female characters" bc the show version of her is... not the impression i had of her in the book lol but I could be totally wrong about that. Overall, I actually am enjoying watching it, but only when I separate it from the original material in my mind, which is hard to do unless it's on a non-canon characters storyline, which i do enjoy more than the "canon" storylines.
Overall, and I think this has been said before, the show feels more like someone's fanfiction that was made without having read the source material and instead relies heavily on inaccurate wikis lol. It lacks everything that a tolkien adaption should have. particularly heart and a soul. I think the worst part is that i'm actually enjoying it, if reluctantly lmaooooo but some of their storytelling choices for certain characters and the plot just makes me cringe. But i can't say i hate it. It's just... exactly what I would imagine a company like amazon would make out of tolkiens works so i can't say i'm surprised but I'm still disapointed lol

A Flowery Debate.

A/N before any of y'all fuckin' come at me, i know these ain't peonies nor orchids, but i don't give shit lol
Enjoy the somewhat self-indulgent drabble 🥰💕
Rules, Requests, and More!
"No, no, no, no!" An unfortunately familiar voice cuts through the once peaceful garden. Gritting their teeth as they hear the swathe of living robes himself stomp towards them. What was once a peaceful shift of taking care of the King's personal gardens has now taken a very annoying turn.
"I specifically asked for blue peonies," he says cooly, trying to regain his anger in as he reaches out to touch the bush Y/N was trying to trim.
"I have it written done from weeks ago that you had requested purple flowers," Y/N retorts, snipping an outgrown branch before turning to face their King. "So now you have purple flowers, perfectly matching those hideous orchids you insist on keeping!"
"Hideous!" Thranduil gasps his anger now back in full force. "Do you know how long it took me to get them to grow? How long it took to even find those damned things?"

How long I've waited.
Tumblr media
Summary: After a bloody long night, Y/N finally has the pleasure of meeting Jake. This fic is based on this prompt by @budcooper! Go show them some love!
Warnings: blood, like a shit ton of blood and me describing it poorly 😅
A/N well this didn't turn out as expected! I'm not entirely angry about that, but I just hope y'all like it and my characterization of Jake! Anyways, I hope y'all enjoy cuz my next fic i'll post isn't moon knight related, buuuut I do plan on opening my requests soon for my 700 follower celebration! So if you like my writing style be sure to look out for that!
Rules, Requests, and More!
A stifled yawn breaks the stillness of the small apartment. What time is it, Y/N slowly blinks, shutting the book they had been boredly studying closed, Y/N turns their head to search for their phone on Steven's cluttered desk. Blinded by their phone's bright light, Y/N blankly stares at bold numbers reading 3:39 AM.
With a tired groan, Y/N noisily drops their phone back onto their desk before scrubbing their face with their palms. "What's taking you so long Marc?" They whine, their fingers spreading slightly so they can eye down the heavily locked door.
Date the fist of vengeance nobody said, it'd be fun nobody added.
Throwing themselves back into their chair, Y/N crosses their arms above their chest, drumming their fingers against their arm in thought. They had a very demanding job that required them to get up at seven-thirty every day, but they had promised to themselves to always wait for Marc or Steven or anyone else to come back.....much to their dislike of course.

Birthday Surprise.
Tumblr media
Summary: with Steven and Marc's 37th birthday today, Y/N has decided to give them a gift they will never forget
Warnings: pregnancy and fluff really, the end might be a little angsty but it's very light, and it's 1.4k words
A/N i don't think i've seen anyone do something like this yet? Or i've just missed those fics lmao, anyways i just wanted some Steven fluff and so i wrote steven fluff! I left this open-ended because i'm thinking of making a part 2? But y'all would have to let me know if you want that. Enjoy!!
Rules, Requests, and More! (Pt. 2)
"You sure Marc doesn't want to blow out candles too?" Y/N questions as she places two colorful candles in the shape of a 3 and 7 in the middle of a round chocolate cake, her eyes landing on the excited Brit sitting in front of the cake. "Cause you could blow out the three and he can get the seven or I can just get mo–"
Steven's soft dark eyes quickly glance at Gus's tank before replying. "Ah no," he begins, his lip twitching into a slight frown. "He says he's not much of a birthday guy anymore."
With a small nod, Y/N makes sure that all the presents are in place while Steven lights his candles. Sliding into an old wooden chair next to him, Y/N smiles softly at him as she says "Happy birthday love!"
After blowing out the candles, they happily dig in. "Wow this is amazing love," Steven hums.

Also I’d love to hear any more of your “unsubstantiated but confident” headcanons
-@outofangband
Your encouragement is so dangerous but makes me very happy ❤️❤️❤️
Okay this is probably not what you meant but because this is the concept that won't leave me alone: Finrod slept with/dated a dwarf/dwarves! This is potentially SUBSTANTIATED though (in my head 😂) by his fancy dwarf-made necklace, their famous friendship, and all the gifts exchanged—I love so much that he literally has/goes by a Khuzdul epessë (Felagund)!! (to go with his mannish/Taliska one from Bëor & co, he got the whole interspecies dating bingo card)
Tumblr media
(or dwarf datemate(s) of any gender because that boy is bisexual)
mostly I want Finrod to get all the happiness he can get and this headcanon is in service of that goal. Full disclosure I started reading the Silmarillion for Maedhros but I was so haunted for 3+ days after reading Finrod's battle with Sauron that I tripped and fell into writing a fic of "dwarf makes Nauglamír for Finrod ft. romance" and am very excited about this
Also from someone currently writing "Nauglamír ft romance" i just want to say that necklace's Journey in the plot after Finrod's death has taken on previously unforeseen emotional significance for me and I'm so deeply sad about it. Literally everything the opposite of what Finrod would ever have wanted. Fuck

I think sometimes people can be too invested in arguing whether or not something is "real" in canon which is weird to me because setting aside the fact that it's all technically fictional so you can do whatever you want, you don't need to prove that your specific idea is canonical. It's okay to just...disregard canon.

Silmblogging: Quenta 2: Of Aulë and Yavanna
You should know the drill by now: here are some disjointed thoughts about this rather short but much beloved chapter (as far as I’m concerned, anyway)
Like I said: I LOVE this chapter! When I first read the Silmarillion it was this chapter that made me go "Huh. I’ll like this book, I think 🤔"
Plus, in a book about a subcreation, it feels immensely important to have a chapter that's all about subcreation. Speaking of which, I’ve never once in my life been able to read this chapter without immediately having to read Mythopoeia
On that note, I'm endlessly fascinated by the similarities and differences between Aule and Morgoth. Manwe might be a foil to Morgoth the ruler but Aule is a foil to Morgoth the subcreator for sure
In particular, because I'm currently reading LotR, where that's such an important theme, I can't help but think of what a difference it makes to be driven by love or by the will to dominate. To borrow from Aule, it’s the difference between being a Child of Iluvatar and trying to usurp his place, and I love watching that play out again and again in Tolkien’s world. This was clearly a major concern of his
I'm.... Skipping way ahead but. It's so cool how the Dwarves have a special connection with Aule, and the Ents with Yavanna, and the Elves with Varda..... But Men's connection seems to be either Iluvatar or Morgoth. The implications are very juicy
I have a strong tendency to think of dwarves as mini Aules, which I know is inaccurate but I can't shake off. But it's actually pretty striking that Aule is defined in this chapter by his humility and teachable spirit, which is, uh, not very dwarvish of him
Extending that (and again, I'm being influenced by reading TTT right now!) it's also pretty remarkable that ents do not share Yavanna's concern for all beings, and elves certainly don't share their gems the way Yavanna shares her stars, and men misuse the hell out of their very unique free will. Not to imply that the Valar are perfect (they demonstrably are not) but they are Good in a way none of the four races seems to be.
(If anyone’s wondering why I’m speaking of the four races so much - I was reading Treebeard’s poem listing the Creatures just yesterday)
I always sort of think this chapter should be in the BoLT but it’s not? At all? It feels so foundational to the entire SIlm that I always think “Surely I’m misremembering, there has to be at least a kernel of this story somewhere” but nope. It blows my mind. I’m not a creative person and I find it extremely confusing how something that feels essential can be a relatively late addition, while things that seem pretty inconsequential are there from day 1, like Rumil
Super general and unhelpful note, but am I the only one who finds this chapter very moving?? Aule’s apology to Iluvatar, the dwarves begging for their lives, Yavanna’s sorrow for her creations which never quite abates even with the creation of the ents... I don’t know, there’s a lot of understated sadness here for me
Speaaaaking of Yavanna’s sorrow. I was today years old when it dawned on me what an extra jerk move it is for Feanor to go “Oh no you can’t destroy my creations, I’d die” while Yavanna is lamenting the loss of her trees, because um. She better than any other Vala knows what it’s like to love your creations only to have it destroyed again and again for the sake of the world - say, so the wood can fuel the forges of some elves, maybe? No? Doesn’t ring a bell? Even before the Two Trees, if there’s a single Ainu who must empathize with Feanor’s (understandable!) issues with loss, it’s probably the one whose creations are never allowed to endure. Just saying. I mean, I’d be blind to not pick up on the Three Gems vs Two Trees parallel, but I’d never really thought about how both of them have already faced repeated loss by the time the Darkening happens
(This also foreshadows Feanor destroying the beloved boats of the Teleri, of course. That takes it from “No, I will not allow you to destroy that which I love for the sake of that which you love” to “Yes I will destroy that which you love for the sake of that which I love”)
I’d pay so much money to see how the dwarves tell the story of their creation
I feel like I had a couple other thoughts but I can’t remember them just now. If that changes, I’ll edit this post, but I highly doubt my brain will be helpful

One of the things I love most about Tolkien’s works is how important music is.
Like, have you read The Silmarillion?
The entirety of the Ainulindalë was a whole bunch of SONG.
Luthien (AKA our QUEEN, gosh she’s pretty awesome (including the “pretty” literally)) had an epic SING OFF with Sauron and told him to give the castle, basically. She won, of course.
Come to think of it, there are a bunch of epic Sing Offs in The Silm.
All the stories told in The Silm are pretty much prefaced by “as told in this song, which is probably more than twelve hours long.”
And let’s not forget another iconic moment: Luthien singing herself and her boyfriend back to life. Like, Mandos, the one being who never shows emotion, actually cries? And let’s her go? And a HUMAN? Wow. What a QUEEN.
And then there’s The Hobbit.
The dwarves sing.
The elves sing.
Basically, everywhere you go, there’s a song that goes with it. (And a party, but who’s counting?)
And then The Lord of the Rings, itself.
Bilbo, Sam, Aragorn, and Frodo (to name four, there are tons more) write a bunch of poems and turn them into songs.
I mean, I’ve only talked about the books so far, but man, the soundtrack gives me chills!
Basically, Tolkien values music, which is awesome. I’m probably missing a few things here and I might be slightly inaccurate ‘cuz I’m still learning, but MUSIC.
It’s just so cool. Tolkien rocks. (Pun not intended)
Here’s Éowyn singing for your enjoyment.

I don’t care about fandom discourse really, and I don’t want to create an echo chamber, but when dozens of people are afraid to engage on a particular topic for fear of being insulted and bullied out of the fandom - when I’ve talked to multiple people who’ve said that the reason they left the Silm fandom was this discourse - it’s gone too far. Especially because it’s not about something that’s actually important.
so I’m just gonna say it: a lot of the anti-Valar and Valar-critical crowd are straight-up mean. quite a few posts that cross my dash aren’t meant to encourage discussion, and it’s obvious that they’re communicating disdain for real-world religion and religious people. they treat the Valar as avatars of everything wrong with Tolkien’s Catholicism, and sometimes just bypass the middleman entirely and go straight for accusing the author of being a terrible person. Most of the time this is because of a theological position they assume he must hold, or an idea they are introducing through their own interpretation (“Mandos is a brainwashing chamber!” “The Valar don’t care about Men!” “The only reason they didn’t end Morgoth in the First Age was because they wanted the Noldor to suffer!” “The Valar don’t want to encourage free will!”) or are straight-up inaccurate (“They drowned Númenor!”) that indicates, to them, something bad about Tolkien’s religion.
Because all religious people are Westboro Baptists, and they’re incapable of writing things that aren’t gospel tracts.
Some of my dearest friends in the fandom are Valar-critical. Hell, I’m Valar-critical. I don’t think they’re perfect and I don’t think their decisions are always good ones. But I do think their choices make sense from a perspective outside “the gods are apathetic and spiteful” and I’m annoyed that when this gets brought up, quite a few people begin to insist that no, actually, religion is evil you guys.
if people can give me a reason for the vitriol and the hatred of the Valar that isn’t “I have unresolved issues with organized IRL religion and I’m incapable of being polite when they’re addressed”, I’ll shut up. But as far as I can tell? That’s what it is, and that’s not okay, because nobody ought to get bullied over a pantheon full of fictional characters.

kazaera replied to your post: Look, I’m just going to fake all the sheep farming...
I identify with this way too much. I try to remind myself that imperfect, archaeologically inaccurate fic is better than no fic and often those are the two options. (And no, I don’t read OII for accurate portrayal of sheep farming! :P)
I’m over the moon, btw, to see you’re back on my dash with an interest in the Silm (And I KNOW that cycle of fandom coming back from nowhere to grab you again). it’s motivation.
OII is such a weird fic, because I don’t know what its strengths as a story are for readers and what aspect I want to focus on at a given time- the big picture anthropology foundation of societies, Ingwë’s inner thoughts, describe the Vala, prequel set up for as many of my other fics as possible~
But that the segment before Ingwë’s is a detailed scene inspired by an artifact in a Time Team episode and the one after that is ‘heget is WAY TOO passionate about the domestication of dogs’, it’s a glaring contrast in having at least a piece of petrified wood to stand on versus free-falling in the bog.
Ironically- I know for Ingwë’s segment what the correlation to the overarching thematic characterization progress should be- and that’s a general weakness of mine, to actually plot out what a character’s internal character growth should be (I write flat characters. I admit that).
