The world of independent filmmaking thrives on passion, resilience, and the unwavering pursuit of a dream. Kareem "Gorilla" Davis embodies these qualities as he navigates the vast landscape of the industry, leaving his mark with a unique approach and unwavering dedication. This story explores Davis's journey, from his initial spark of inspiration to his current projects and aspirations. This initial experience ignited a passion within him, setting him on a path that would define his future. Shaped by a desire to take control and explore his creative side after working at a record label, Davis found himself drawn to the world of cinema. The influence of renowned cinematographer Roger Deakins further fueled his cinematic curiosity, shaping his visual storytelling approach. This new chapter provided an opportunity for him to further refine his skills as a director through constant learning and exploration. He simultaneously nurtured his talents as a talent manager, fostering the growth of aspiring actors. A pivotal moment arrived when Davis secured a spot in the prestigious Sundance Institute's Directors and Screenwriters Lab. This immersive experience provided him with a platform to learn alongside industry veterans, further shaping his vision and storytelling techniques. Notably, this opportunity also allowed him to reconnect his actors with the influential Larry Moss, demonstrating his commitment to their ongoing development. Refining the Craft: A New Chapter of Independent Filmmaking Currently residing on the West Coast, Davis continues to refine his independent filmmaking approach. Operating with a more structured team and enhanced production value, he is quietly building upon his previous experiences to create impactful stories. While achieving success, he remains dedicated to nurturing his businesses - Imperium Features and PATH Management - demonstrating his entrepreneurial spirit alongside his artistic pursuits. A Glimpse into the Future: Upcoming Projects and Aspirations As the spotlight gradually illuminates Davis's contributions, he reveals his next steps with quiet excitement. His future holds the promise of captivating projects like the thriller "Broken Things," the action-drama "The Protected," and the unique superhero story, "The First Classic." Ever the humble artist, Davis yearns to share his creations with a wider audience, hoping to inspire the next generation of Black filmmakers by showcasing diverse narratives and fostering inclusivity within the industry. With aspirations for collaborations with major studios and the possibility of a theatrical film debut, Davis remains dedicated to pushing boundaries and making his mark on the cinematic landscape. Currently in pre-production for "Broken Things," an action thriller following a complex storyline, Davis demonstrates his ability to craft compelling narratives that explore the intricacies of human behavior. Throughout his evolving narrative, Davis remains grounded in his values, appreciating the journey while creating art that resonates with his audience. His story serves as a testament to the power of passion, dedication, and perseverance in the pursuit of artistic dreams. FAQs Q: What initially sparked Kareem Davis's passion for filmmaking? First read? My beloved Eydie. @eydiev she has been the first to read all my screenplays. I always print out the first copy for her to take her red pen and make her notes, fix punctuation and grandmas… er I mean grammar. She is the toughest critic. Tomorrow I implement the notes and make the changes I agree with. 😀🤓😍🥹🫠 #CalamityCaper #venturoproductions #screenwriter #screenplay #writersofinstagram #writer #editor #filmmaker #independentfilmmaker #writerlife https://www.instagram.com/p/CpRuSF0OPWz/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

"Fire on Water" / 'நீர் மேல் நெருப்பு' at Osaka Asian Film Festival,Japan.
Apologies for the delayed post. I've been occupied with the festival. "Fire on Water" / 'நீர் மேல் நெருப்பு' had its Asian Premiere at the Osaka Asian Film Festival https://www.facebook.com/OsakaAsianFF
I was here back in 2017 with Jagat. Since then, I've missed the festival, the people, and the country. This time, I'm glad to be here again with the team, including our Post-Production supervisor Samad and lead actresses Rubini Sambanthan and Rupini Krishnan. Unfortunately, our main lead Karnan couldn't make it this time. How I wish he were here.
I still remember planning a longer stay for the festival back in 2017, but I had to rush back to Malaysia since my son's delivery was expected earlier than anticipated. I informed the festival organizers that I had to leave early and offered to cover the flight change charges, but the festival program director, Terouka Sozo San, graciously absorbed the costs as a gift. Such a sweet people.
Hence, I'm glad to be back here to witness the works of other Asian directors and meet them in person. I'm also grateful for the opportunity to serve as one of the jurors for the short film competition. It's a wonderful feeling and experience to be able to watch the voices of young filmmakers from across Asia. I
I'm touched by the fact that almost 5-7 people who watched Jagat back in 2017 came back to watch my second film, "Fire On Water." They vividly remember Jagat, and some even attended two screenings. They mentioned experiencing different layers of emotions the second time around. Such an intimate and lovely festival and people!

moodboards & mod podge
On Friday, I put together a moodboard for the new film. Something I struggle with is communicating how I want a project to look and feel, and I find that these inspiration boards take a lot of that burden away. In short, it’s a way to ensure that the entire project—the film itself and the suite of promotional pieces—is visually consistent and cohesive.
I’ll most likely expand on this moodboard or create new ones to include more detailed elements like props, costumes, and shot details. For this first board, though, I wanted to focus on the overall tone and imagery.
I started in Pinterest and created a board primarily for vintage advertisements and 1970s interior design references. From there, I downloaded my favorites and pulled a color schemed inspired by the images. Usually, I just create a collage for our digital production book. For this project, though, I wanted to do something different.
I spent the afternoon in a little arts and crafts session and pasted print-outs of the graphics with paint chips and a couple of old photographs I found at the art supply store. I definitely made a mess with the Mod Podge and paper scraps, but I love having something physical to flip through.

24 years ago today “Stanley 2: The Legacy” was released. My second movie made when I was 17 in high school with my friends. In 2018 I decided to fix it up, re digitize from the original tapes and film a few extra scenes with the help of the same camera I used in 1998 and my babies who were my mini crew as we went to the park to shoot. What a beautiful time. I was able to fix scenes and restore the movie to release on YouTube for all to see. Time just comes and goes. Finish your projects and hug your babies 🥹 #keepmovingforward #stanley2thelegacy @venturoproductions #venturoproductions #stanleymerrick #independentfilmmaker #90smovies #director #moviedirector #independentmovie https://www.instagram.com/p/ConOaf4vO1u/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

It's the #logo that started it all! While organizing my storage unit the other day, I discovered the #amazing original sketch that became the logo for my company. Designed by local #filmmaker @pbarry81 Patrick Barry, it was done as a favor, knowing I love movies! He definitely has a talent for being able to create memorable images! LOL! If you've watched any of my #projects, you've seen this picture as a part of the studio opener. Seeing this makes me so happy! On that note, please continue to support #independentfilmmakers...and filmmaking! (at Jacksonville, Florida) https://www.instagram.com/p/CdMoxMOOYkP/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
