In today's blog post, we are discussing the career of Walter Winfred Chenoweth, a pioneer in the 20th century food science industry and the author of one of the most concise and comprehensive books on food preservation. Learn how this one talented American professor helped the island of Newfoundland weather the hunger years during the Great Depression and learn about his 1930 cookbook/instruction manual that taught homecooks how to preserve everything edible including fruit, vegetables, meat, fish, poultry, pork and cider. You want to miss it if you are a fan of canning your own vegetables and making your own jam! -- -- -- -- -- -- #canning #1930s #canningseason #newfoundland #teacherslife #diy #foodie #historyblogger #foodscience #chenoweth #homemade #cooking #jammaking #foodpreservation #preserves #rarecookbooks #inthevintagekitchen #foodblog

When it's 98 degrees outside even the vintage fish tins need a way to cool off. Plus, if you fill them with water and freeze them for a couple of hours they make pretty fun ice cubes for your drink buckets. -- -- -- #heatwave #cooling #fish #ice #frozen #icecubes #tin #vintage #summer #inthevintagekitchen #repurposed #freezer #summerfun

For Mothers Day, the Vintage Kitchen went on location! We prepared a five course French themed dinner with chilled asparagus soup to start, followed by a mixed salad of local lettuce greens, a zucchini, thyme and eggplant tart, a local cheese and fruit board and chocolate cake to finish. Of course, our French theme wouldn't be complete without wine so we paired each course with a different blend and partied the night away. -- -- -- #mothersdaydinner #frenchdinner #dinnerparty #inthevintagekitchen #asparagus #fivecoursemeal #candlelight #tablescape #foodies #foodphotography #family #frenchfood #vivalafrance

So excited to announce a big new project for this big new year... The International Vintage Recipe Tour 2020! Each week throughout the year, I’ll be cooking a recipe from a different country that was featured in the 1971 edition of the New York Times International Cook Book. Sharing both the experience (and the recipe!) on the blog every Wednesday, I hope you’ll join me in exploring together the cuisine of 45 countries over the course of 12 months. Since I have never embarked on such a long term project before nor tried any of the recipes previously, there’s a good chance we’ll encounter some mishaps along the way and uncover some unusual cooking situations. It’s going to be an epic year of discovery, one in which I hope will shine a spotlight on some old, wonderful, possibly forgotten dishes that may have gotten covered up over time. Read more about the project over on the blog today and join me next Wednesday as we visit our first country, Armenia! Can’t wait to travel around the world via the kitchen with you! . . . . . #cookingchallenge #vintagerecipes #nytimes #internationalfood #foreignfood #internationalcuisine #1970s #armenia #armenianfood #cookingproject #onceaweek #2020goals #kitchengoals #recipeshare #inthevintagekitchen https://www.instagram.com/p/B68hfs2gYFc/?igshid=aok9p4fj377x

One thing I’m going to miss about this festive season is saying goodbye to our holiday gift wrap (see you next year!). It’s been so fun to wrap up presents for shop customers and send them on their merry way. If you are a last minute gift shopper (like me!), don’t fret, there are still a few days left to find your treasure and tuck it under the tree. ❄️ - - - - - #giftwrap #holidaypaper #complimentarygiftwrap #vintageshop #holidaypackaging #lastminutegifts #inthevintagekitchen #presents🎁 #wintergiftwrap https://www.instagram.com/p/B6LlkDwAw0G/?igshid=1urdzqdfawgz8

Five things you may not have known about the Joy of Cooking cookbook... 1. Irma S. Rombauer was in her early 50's when she published Joy of Cooking following the death of her husband, who had committed suicide and left her to financially fend for herself. Writing a cookbook was her way of moving on with life. 2. While she was writing it, people didn't necessarily know Irma for being an expert in cooking, although parties at her house were fun and vivacious, and she herself a charming hostess. 3. It is the oldest cookbook in American history that is still edited, revised and published by descendents of the Rombauer family. 4. Selling over 18 million copies since its debut, it is considered the kitchen bible for millions of home cooks. Even Julia Child was a big-time fan, saying it was her number one all-time favorite American cookbook. 5. Since its debut, Joy of Cooking has been revised 8 times with each new version offering something unique to previous editions. This edition pictured here was published in 1975 and includes a backpacking menu, and an outdoorsman section for campers, hikers and hunters. In incredible like-new condition, this vintage cookbook is ready to become a favorite in your house too! Find it newly listed in the shop! -- -- #joy #irmarombauer #joyofcooking #1970s #kitchenalia #vintagecookbooks #classickitchen #classic #bestseller #cookingram #cookbook #holidayfun #joyful #womeninbusiness #amazingwomen #chefslife #inthevintagekitchen #kitchenshop #bookstagram #fivethings

Clipped from the rose garden of @traderjoes this has been a BIG week for the Vintage Kitchen! A new batch of friends has toppled the Kitchen over the 1,000 follower mark here on Instagram, which is lovely not for the number itself but for the number of times I get to say welcome, welcome, welcome, welcome, welcome to the Vintage Kitchen. I hope our new pals find it as joyful a place as I aspire to make it every day. I’ve learned in these past few years that I’m someone who thrives on possibility. It doesn’t matter if something actually happens or not but the fact that it “could” happen makes all the difference. Each new pal that becomes part of this place represents another possibility to expand our horizons and ignite our curiosities. So happy for that! Originally, I was going to celebrate this news with a homemade cake recipe and a special decorating style I can’t wait to share, but when I discovered these roses at Trader Joe’s I knew this was the way to go. Orange roses celebrate a mixture of friendship and passion thanks to the combination of red and yellow colors that makes up their dynamic hue. The colors of orange roses aren’t as easy to consistently replicate as other roses like pink or yellow or red, so each one is always unique. No two ever look exactly alike. That’s what the Vintage Kitchen (and you in it ) is all about. We are fueled on unique stories, friendly connections and passionate cooking around this place. I’m so happy we get to share it all together. Cheers to new friends, exciting possibilities and a mighty wonderful community of vintage kitchen love that grows more marvelous with every passing day. 🥂 - - - #newfriendships #orangeroses🌹 #celebrationtime🎉 #over1000 #gratitude #allthepossibilities #thankyou #goodnews #traderjoesfinds #orangeroses #ourcommunityisgrowing #kitchenlovers #inthevintagekitchen #vintagekitchenlove https://www.instagram.com/p/B3SNDpOgwPC/?igshid=zi912wkvie4n

It’s not every day that a photograph and a story effortlessly pop out of an almost antique sugar bowl. I’m so pleased to introduce you to Margaret Theresa and her 1920s era Japanese Nippon sugar bowl. M.T. lived by the sea in New Jersey and was given this rare piece of porcelain as a gift which she prized for its delicate beauty. She especially loved the way light bounced off of the shimmering dragon making it almost seem as if it were alive. Because of this fanciful notion she held onto and cared for her treasured possession for her entire life. Eventually it was passed down through generations of her family. Now the sugar bowl has been wholeheartedly welcomed into the shop where it is waiting for someone special. Someone who admires the delicate stature and the shimmering dragon with the same amount of adoration that Margaret Theresa herself bestowed upon it. Collectors of Nippon will love it for its rarity. Here in the shop, it is loved for its story. Dragons in Japanese culture represent strength, goodness and good fortune. A most fitting description for a most fragile time traveler. This sugar bowl is not only a tangible survivor of history but also a stunning example of lifelong care and devotion. If only all dishes could be so fortunate;) - - - - - #porcelain #dragonware #oldphotographs #1920s #familyheirlooms #nipponchina #antiquesofinstagram #japanesevintage #dragon #inthevintagekitchen #familystories https://www.instagram.com/p/B27DlUzA9UA/?igshid=verskaoxehl6

Happy Saturday! This is what storytelling looked like in the 1960s, kitchen style! From the land of a Southern fare comes this batch of 53 handwritten recipes. It’s a most interesting collection with five (5!) different variations for barbecue sauce, two Bloody Mary recipes, bird pie, French soufflé, soups, sauces, casseroles, desserts and even a chicken stir-fry recipe for 25 people suitable for “the club.” How fun! With the exception of Velveeta cheese in the Chili con Carne and a few canned mushrooms this collection features all fresh, whole ingredients and special kitchen notes all written out on looseleaf paper that has aged beautifully. A true kitchen character thankfully rescued from obscurity! Find it newly listed in the cookbook section of the shop:) - - - - - #handwrittenrecipes #southernfood #southerncooking #barbecuesauce #bloodymarys #1960s #handwritten #handwritting #paperephemera #inthevintagekitchen #bbqrecipes https://www.instagram.com/p/B2HaCgKAo3Y/?igshid=1bczpaebvhtb4

Here it comes! Pie baking season at last, at last! Enthusiastic bakers across the country anxiously awaited this gem of a Betty baking book in 1968. It contains 160 pages of pie recipes, both sweet and savory, both dinner and dessert, which pretty much seems like all the pies ever made. There’s even a fun chapter that breaks down pie-baking favorites by regions around the U.S.! All the colors, all the classics and all the crazy-namers are included! Whose ready for a slice of grasshopper or applescotch or frozen chocolate?! This one’s full of pies for days and days and days ( and many months too)! 🥧 Find it in the shop! - - - - - #pie #piebaking #pierecipes #bettycrocker #vintagebaking #pastryaddict #piefordays #inthevintagekitchen #abakerslife #bakingfromscratch https://www.instagram.com/p/B1kBYCugPtb/?igshid=ih3vub8prxhm
