Hellfire club Montpelier hill, Dublin Ireland.

These ruins have such a strange history and stories surrounding it; from satanic cults and human sacrifices to summoning satan himself during a card game before the building caught fire, killing several occupants. Sitting atop a hill overlooking dublin and surrounded by thick forest, the place gives off an extremely eerie and suffocating vibe. You can't help but feel eyes on you as you make your way to and from the summit. I'd highly reccomend looking further into the legends yourself, especially my follow irish creeps looking for new haunts.

In my case, we arrived quite late during the winter so it was pitch black when we finally made the trek, adding to the overwhelmingly spooky feel. On the way down after making jokes about things in the forest and being followed Kris had said "oh no." Stopping dead and pointing straight into the dense woods. Trying to laugh it off you can imagine how much I nearly shit myself when I glanced to where he was staring to see two sets of eyes reflecting back at us....

Wild deer! A buck and a doe, mostly likely as spooked to come face to face to strangers as we were but momentarily terrifying all the same.

For the day that's in it here's a Halloween tale from Cavan and my painting that was inspired from it. 👹 It was believed by some that on Halloween night if you looked in a mirror you would see your future husband in the glass, looking over your shoulder. I remember hearing this regularly in primary school. What had to be done before or during looking in the mirror be it from lighting candles to saying a certain word seems to vary depending on who you asked. Also some believed if you say a certain word three times the devil would appear so apart from being afraid to look in the mirror on Halloween night I never gave it a go. But there was a brave lady from Kill in Kilnaleck who thought she would give it a try. It must have been no secret in the area that she was going to do this as when she looked in the mirror to see how handsome her future husband would be, what stared her back was not a man at all but the face of a pig. Petrified and traumatised, little did she know that boys from the area were perfectly positioned outside the window holding up the animal’s decapitated head. 🐷 From my Cavan folklore exhibition "The Hollow".
