Creed: Next Round #1 by LaToya Morgan, Jai Jamison and Wilton Santos. Cover by Mateus Manhanini. Variant covers by (2) Valentine De Landro, (3) Paris Alleyne, (4) Jahnoy Lindsay and (5) Jung-Geun Yoon. Out in June.
"Ten years after the events of the blockbuster Creed III, Amara Creed is on her own path, stepping outside her father Adonis Creed's shadow and training like there's no tomorrow.
But when her division opponents no longer present a challenge, Amara's drive will have her following in her father's footsteps, going underground.
She'll also need the perfect trainer, but perfection comes with tangled strings attached.
Superstar writers LaToya Morgan (Dark Blood, AMC's The Walking Dead) and Jai Jamison (Superman & Lois), artist Wilton Santos (Break Out), alongside Creed III director and star Michael B. Jordan bring Creed to comics in a story no fan of the franchise can afford to miss!"
Out this week: Creed: The Next Round #1 (BOOM! Studios, $4.99):
Hey, it’s a Creed comic! I’ve seen several articles talking about how manga and anime influenced Michael B. Jordan’s work on the third film, so it makes sense to see a comic spin-off. It’s by LaToya Morgan, Jai Jamison and Wilton Santos, and it focuses on Amara Creed’s boxing career 10 years after the end of Creed III.

Michael B. Jordan's boxing comic wraps up in Creed: The Next Round #4 from BOOM! Studios. But is it knockout, or a swing and a miss, which is a baseball term?

My ranking of all the husbands from The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo from best to worst, excluding Celia because it’s obvious that she was the true love of Evelyn’s life.
1.) Harry: Self explanatory. Great guy. Great dad. Great friend. 10/10
2.) Rex: He was a pretty good guy too. Maybe not as close of a friend to Evelyn as Harry was, but still a nice guy. I would love to know more about him and Joy Nathan though. They sound cute together. 10/10
3.) Robert: Nice guy and we love a good ally. I thought it was nice that he helped Connor find her passion for Wall Street and finance. Pretty chill but also nothing too special at the same time. 9/10
4.) Ernie: Also not too special. Boring dude. Also generally creeped me out for marrying someone who was a child (and before everyone comes at me about Evelyn lying about her age, she said she was sixteen and he still went “cool”). I’m happy he found love with Betty and had his eight kids though. 7/10
5.) Max: This is the point on my list where the husbands get shittier and shittier and my rankings are going to get meaner. Max was simply a dick. Nothing else. As Evelyn said, he only married her for something to brag about instead of seeing her as a valuable person, or just a person in general. Also, trying to put her? Yeah, severely dislike him. 5/10
6.) Don: What. A. Fucking. Shithead. He was for abusing Evelyn and then Ruby. But I will say, as someone who’s passionate about psychology and an advocate for breaking the stigma of people who struggle with addiction and alcoholism, his somewhat redemption and sobriety near the end made me feel sorry for him and I was glad to see him better. Sure, I said he used to be a shithead and there’s no excuse for that, but I also wouldn’t kill him if I knew him in real life. 3/10
7.) Mick: I cannot express my hatred for this dude. Shitty husband, shitty friend, shitty father. The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo only gives a glimpse of his jackassery, but Malibu Rising paints a better picture of what a shithead he is. —♾/10
been meaning to post this since november but hello body not working much.
so,
a while back i saw a bunch of comments about "suits me", the biography of billy tipton, in which people were very angry at the author for disrespectful language.
and it took me a minute to process that until i realised it's a time thing.
eg sure, the language is outdated now. but that's because billy died in 1989, his ex approached middlebrook 2 years later in 1991 because she (kitty) wanted his story told and appreciated the care & respect middlebrook had used in another biography, middlebrook did years of research, and the book came out in 1998.
the language that we, the trans community, use for ourselves is constantly evolving, & moreso (& faster!) online among younger people than in meatlife among older folx (ime, ymmv, etc)
i've been online since 1993. i first looked for trans spaces in the late 90s, but i found exactly ZERO that weren't specifically only for mtf or ftm people until about 10 years later.
and even then, none of the spaces i found were comfortable; they were decidedly NOT supportive for either non-medicalised nor nonbinaried trans folx
hell, i only learned that other genderqueer folx were getting top surgery and taking hormones in the past decade or so! and i don't think i saw the word nonbinary until the last 5-10 years either.
even a decade ago, the loudest voices speaking about the trans community seemed to be binary voices who far too often spoke about & treated those of us outside that binary in very similar ways to how bi people were often treated durnig the biphobia surge during the aids crisis.
so yes, while the language IS outdated, i hope people do recognise that middlebrook reached out to four very well known and very well respected members of the trans community-- three trans men, at least 2 of whom are activists, and one person who had about as much use for binaries or being shoved into boxes as i do.
image description: text reading "To Stormé DeLarverié, Jamison Green, Jay Prosser, and Rupert Raj-Gauthier, I am grateful for views from inside the transgendered life."
(yes, "transgendered life" is also outdated. i know. i'm old!)
to me this strongly suggests that middlebrook may have recognised that billy (a married man with kids who had a lifelong affectionate relationship with 2 of his cousins who knew all about his life and with whom he chose to be dorothy) might be a trans man or might have had more complex sense of self.
and we'll never know, but middlebrook made space for possibilities while trying to not push one way or the other. or at least that's my read.
Sometimes we just fall in love with a cute nickname for our characters. So here is a list of names that you can name your characters, even though you will only call them by their nickname.
Alexander - Al, Alex, Lex, Lexie, Xander, Xandie, Sasha
Kibar Art via Twitter : Grateful shoutout to Jai Jamison director of several 'Superman & Lois' episodes, for trusting me with a series of commissions, as they wrap up the final days of shooting for the last season. And huge thanks to Elizabeth Tulloch for her excitement over the illustrations 🎬✨
