i've been thinking a lot about writing advice, especially after getting back on writeblr, and one of the ones i see the most is the "your first draft doesn't need to be perfect" one. the one that tells writers they shouldn't be afraid to hop around and write their favorite parts first or use placeholders. don't be afraid to be messy. you know.
and like!! this process works wonders for some people! it's perfectly solid advice.
but also. idk if i'm the only one, but for me, the mess takes out the fun. it completely kills my motivation. i look at placeholders in my draft and think "this sucks. it's ugly. it doesn't look like a book. i'm never writing again."
tbh, i think most writing advice is arbitrary and you should be free to write whatever you want. but i'm also just putting this out there as pseudo-advice or really just a green light to writers like me, who want to write the perfect draft simply bc they Literally Won't Finish Their Book If They Don't.
y'all. don't worry about writing the perfect version of your book. write ONE version, from beginning to end. think about your draft as one route in a video game. if you're stuck on a scene, just do it kinda shittily but Cleanly. no placeholders. transition into the next scene. get to the end. you can come back and fix the things you missed or go down paths you didn't see later.
this way, you have a clean draft that reads like a book. it might not be The book you want to write, and it might have some issues here and there, but it won't be messy to you. it'll look and function like a story. if you're like me, your motivation will thank you ;)

Nimona and its portrayal of the queer experience: a stream of consciousness "essay"
This is not a reach by any means, and I know countless people have picked up on this and/or discussed it at length many times, but Nimona is undeniably a story of queerness and queer people in a hetero- and cis-normative world. Through the use of the “monster” concept, the movie effectively demonstrates the way that the LGBTQ+ community is ostracized and villainized.
Throughout the movie, Nimona’s experiences as a shapeshifter, Ballister’s reactions and assumptions toward her, and other citizens’ perception of her parallel how queer people are treated in the real world. When Ballister first meets Nimona, she chooses not to reveal her ability to shift to him until it is absolutely necessary—quite literally a situation of life or death. Even then, she is reluctant to do so, because she has learned that this ability of hers, although not inherently dangerous or evil, is viewed as such and enforced by the only society that is explicitly stated to exist in the movie’s universe. The reveal of her abilities can be equated to a queer individual’s coming out, and it lines up nicely in the sense that often, people are afraid to come out, even to close friends and family members they have known since birth because of the political and societal stigma around the LGBTQ+ community that’s almost universal. They also often feel pressured to do so.
Ballister’s reaction to the aforementioned reveal also serves as a parallel between the two experiences. After she demonstrates shifting, Ballister asks Nimona “what” she is, repeatedly requests that she appear “normal” while talking to him, and uses terminology that Nimona clearly finds derogatory and hurtful. Part of this is the way he was raised—people who live in the Nimona universe are implied to live in a society where knowledge of those who can shapeshift—widely referred to as monsters—is commonplace. Not only is the knowledge of their existence commonplace, however—it is also widely accepted that those with shapeshifting abilities are evil and intrinsically against the concepts of peace and stable civilization. There is no real evidence for this idea besides a loosely framed “historical event” that has been passed down for one thousand years (as referenced at the beginning of the movie) and has likely been warped and distorted to fit certain people’s biases along the way. The same goes for queer people. The existence of the LGBTQ+ community is widespread knowledge; however, many people associate the community with concepts of perversion or sacrilege and don’t know much about the individuals who it’s made up of past these prejudices. Children are taught to refer to gay and transgender people by slurs, just like Ballister was taught to refer to Nimona as a monster.
Nimona is treated callously by Ballister, especially at first, as if her differences make her less than worthy of respect and decency, and she owes anyone around her an explanation because of those differences. This parallels the way that queer people often feel pressured to come out and that they owe those around them explanations of their identities—think strangers overtly asking transgender people about their genitals on the internet, or even in person, or gay/bisexual/queer-oriented people being questioned extensively in order to “prove” their queerness.
Now, in terms of Nimona’s character and how she herself is a reference to queerness: as a genderfluid person, I identify heavily with this character. For one, the obvious—I feel that my gender identity is fluid, and, if it were possible, would choose to be able to shift between physically male/female/androgynous to match how I feel. Nimona also describes her need to shift between forms. At one point, she explains that not shifting is like holding in a sneeze—resisting a natural biological process. Yes, she can stay in one form, but that is uncomfortable and undesirable for her. She even tells Ballister that staying in the form he at first coins her “normal” one (the human presenting form) would be like dying, or rather, not really living. This really resonated with me and how I experience my gender identity—in spaces where I cannot express myself as the gender I feel makes me feel like I’m living half a life. It’s living with the saturation turned down to the lowest setting.
Another phrase that stuck with me after watching was when Nimona offered Ballister the deal of being his sidekick “forever” if she were to help him clear his name. At first, she offers her hand in her human form but then shifts to the body of a shark. Ballister asks her, exasperatedly, if she can just “be herself—a girl.” Nimona replies, “But I’m not a girl. I’m a shark.” This phrase is important because it communicates that transgender people are not masquerading as something other than themselves—they are being themselves. It is other people who cannot accept the fact that the way they have always seen a person is not necessarily who they really are. In my case, I often worry that people will not see me as myself when I identify as masculine—they might see it as an outfit I put on, or a role I act in. But it is truly me. My masculine identity is just as much of myself as I am when I’m femme presenting, just as shark-Nimona is just as much Nimona as human-Nimona.
This is definitely not all of the examples in the movie, not even all the ones that jumped out at me, but I think this is enough to communicate my thoughts. It was a fantastic movie. WATCH NIMONA.

Hi, it’s me again. Just wanna say please don’t give up on writing. Even when you feel like no one sees your work, even if you don’t get the amount of notes you wanted to reach, even if you think no one is reading. Keep writing, keep posting, don’t give up on something you love. Don’t be afraid to rec your fics to others. I promise you, there are others that are so happy you post your work and they love reading it! I know this platform can be very discouraging and can be negative on the mindset, but never think for one second your work was for nothing 🩷 I just know someone needed to hear that today 🩷

The very thing about the Morrissey hater bandwagon is that while the things he has said ARE wrong and DO deserve to be called out on but I think its messed up to only credit Johnny Marr and act as if he's the only valid member or something. The smiths weren't just either of them, it was all FOUR of them (and Craig sometimes) and without Andy and Mikes talent and contributions the smiths would be NOTHING, thats the POINT of bands and the REASON why there was a court case to begin with. The more I learn about the smiths and not just focusing on Morrissey's antics the more I'm realizing that none of the controversial thing he says would even be published without Johnny, Andy, and Mike....because Morrissey would've never been anything without them and the smiths. I doubt Morrissey circa 1970-1982 would've made anything of himself or anything he liked without Johnny, and then Johnny introducing Andy, and then however Mike came in.

Phineas and ferb movie is so autism bc the most important evil backstory catalyst for an actually successful doofenshmirtz dictator outcome is him losing a beloved toy. Let ALONE the fact that it’s a train. very good autism show.

15 Questions, 11 Mutuals ^-^
Thank you to @frenchywrites and @gay4utica for tagging me! ^-^
Nudging other moots: @sm-writes-chaos @talitha52 @lavender-laney @aurevives @broodparasitism @enne-uni @hallwriteblr (i double checked to make sure it was okay, unsure about the rest of my moots. lmk if you want to be tagged in this and/or in other tag games :3 )
Rules and answers below the cut.
Rules: Answer each question as yourself or as your OC!
-- I'm going to be answering as both myself, and my OC Isaac, my beloved. (Specifically 90s AU Isaac, not Dishonored fan OC Isaac.)
1. Are you named after anyone?
Me: Nope. Jamie is my chosen name and I just liked how it sounded!
Isaac: Not that I know of. My dad named me. It probably meant something to him then.
2. When was the last time you cried?
Me: I can't remember the last time. But I'm replaying Omori, so likely soon.
Isaac: Last phone call with Quinn. I don't want to talk about it.
3. Do you have kids?
Me: No. I don't plan on it.
Isaac: No. I'd suck as a parent.
4. Do you use sarcasm?
Me: Online, not often. IRL, yeah. I'm trying to tone it down.
Isaac: No shit.
5. What's the first thing you notice about people?
Me: Their hands. I like me some good hands!
Isaac: Their eyes, usually. Whatever stands out. But usually eyes.
6. What's your eye color?
Me: Brown!
Isaac: Lighter Brown.
7. Scary movies or happy endings?
Me: It depends! Scary movies is my instinctual answer, since happy endings usually make me feel weird. Like gross weird, if it's too sappy.
Isaac: Happy endings so I can vicariously live through it.
8. Any special talents?
Me: I used to draw a lot! I wanted to be an illustrator for many years, but I've been extremely creatively burnt out overall and lost my passion for it. I do doodles here and there when I feel inspired, particularly by video games, but I no longer feel the desire to share it, pursue visual art as a profession, or for fame/recognition. I have a lot of thoughts about it, but I don't like talking about it often because it upsets me sometimes if I'm caught in a bad thought cycle. LOL.
Isaac: I ran track in high school. But there's nothing special about me. Quinn says I'm really good at chess though, but I don't even know all the rules. I think he's just so bad that it makes me look good. heh.
9. Where were you born?
Me: NYC.
Isaac: Syracuse, New York State.
10. What are your hobbies?
Me: Writing, listening to new music, and playing video games. Also programming if I have the mental bandwidth for it.
Isaac: Playing bass guitar, riding my bike, people watching, video games, watch MTV. I don't go out much.
11. Do you have any pets?
Me: I have a dog and a cat!
Isaac: I wish I did. I'd want a cool one though. Like a skunk or a spider.
12. What sports do you play/have played?
Me: I did martial arts (karate and tae kwon do) for most of my youth, but discontinued it after moving around too often.
Isaac: I ran track in school. Maybe riding my bike is a sport? I tried skateboarding too but I think I'm too finnicky. My bike has more control.
13. How tall are you?
Me: No comment... v-v
Isaac: 5'8". I dunno what that is everywhere else.
14. Favorite subject in school?
Me: Math and Science.
Isaac: Chemistry. And Home Economics, surprisingly. And ironically. Please don't look at my room.
15. Dream job?
Me: Realistically, a software developer. Ideally, a painter/illustrator/game designer. Again, creative burnout. Brain no work. Brain broken, and I can't fix it... Writing is an exception though! I find writing to be extremely cathartic.
Isaac: Maybe a chef. Or musician, once I get good enough at bass. I don't want to think about it.

I really enjoy being both a rosekiller and a bartylus shipper it’s like the best of both worlds but both ships revolve around the romanticism of all that is grotesque and taboo and we can’t forget about the cannibalism! Ah yes the cannibalism

Let's reintroduce myself....
Since I haven't used this blog in 4 years, I thought I'd put together a writeblr intro to pin on my page!
The basics about me:
Name: Jamie/Jam
Age: 25
Pronouns: she/her
Aroace
Taiwanese American
I'm a:
Writer
Artist
Kpop & music enthusiast
I've been a sci-fi/fantasy reader and writer for most of my life, but have recently developed an interest in contemporary fiction (Emily Henry's People We Meet on Vacation literally changed my life). I'm more than happy to read anything as long as it catches my interest &/or involves some of my favorite tropes: found family, sibling reconciliation, redemption arcs, and corruption arcs.
Current WIP: The Composition of Us (TCOU/Tea Cow)
UPDATE: I'm currently looking for beta readers for this book!! Please check out this form if you're interested.
I almost exclusively refer to this project as tea cow because I'm a dumbass who likes amusing herself haha. It's a story very close to my heart that uses the building blocks of a traditional romance to explore asexuality, aromanticism, friendship, family, and chronic illness. More under the cut~
I remember writeblr being a wonderful, tight-knit, and supportive community 4 years ago, and I'm glad to see that this still seems to be the case. Looking forward to supporting other writers and making new friends!!
More about The Composition of Us (TCOU/Tea Cow)
Ruby Wang is a career woman determined to keep her work first priority. However, after a particularly bad bout of dizziness, she loses her job and begrudgingly returns to her hometown, only to find herself pulled into the messy love life of her childhood best friend. The Composition of Us uses the building blocks of a traditional romance to explore aromantic & asexual identity, friendship, family, and chronic illness.
Includes:
A non-love rectangle
Asian Parents™
Musicians and lots of music talk
Childhood friendship !!!!
A blond British himbo
The most indecisive nepotism baby to ever live
Why this story?
Over the last 2 years, I've been suffering from intermittent bouts of dizziness and head pressure. Recently, I finally got my diagnosis of vestibular migraine, which has been a relief and given me a lot of clarity. Nonetheless, the harrowing experience of not knowing what was wrong with me and feeling like this long-unexplainable something was ruining every part of my life caused me to start creating stories about it to make it more manageable.
TCOU was originally my response to a friend's challenge to write a contemporary story. I've never written anything contemporary other than fics before, so I thought it would be an exciting project to get me out of my comfort zone. The concept started out as an aroace, chronically ill Pride & Prejudice, but has evolved into something very different. I now think of it as more of a general romance for non-romantics. It's a story about aro and ace people getting to star in their own romance. It's about a chronically ill heroine learning to love herself. It's about people using (but not totally adhering) to societal constraints in order to claw their way to their happy endings.
If you'd like to stay updated on tea cow, let me know and I can set up a tag list! Plus, I'm always open to questions if you have any lmao

I watched Nimona tonight after it was recommended (heavily I might add) to me by one of my friends/mutuals (shoutout to @inhuman-horrors, ily jack/p). And. I have. So many thoughts. This movie gave me actual chills. Like, I had goosebumps towards the end. I had to write down notes about certain things. It made me cry, and I don’t usually cry during movies. This is a PSA that I am actually going to be writing a full essay about this movie. I’m not joking I have points prepared. So stay tuned I guess…

Ok I don’t pretend to be an expert on extensive Star Wars lore but here’s my two cents on Obi-Wan so far:
Leia is so obviously force sensitive! She’s calling people out and is wildly perceptive for a ten year old. And obviously she’s got lots of intense training to become a senator but you can’t tell me her skills aren’t bettered by her emotional connection to the force!
Obi-Wan’s out here waiting for “signs” to train Luke when don’t young Jedi show those signs even earlier than 10? So why is no one paying attention to Leia?? It’s such a shame it takes until Luke’s a Jedi for her to get any ounce of training.
Anyway, what Bail said- “She is just as important as him.” And so far, looking at these ten year old twins, I’d be putting my eggs in Leia’s basket to be the one to save the galaxy (sorry Luke, ily2).
