Under Cover: J.C. Leyendecker and American Masculinity

Now through August 13, 2023, the New York Historical Society has 19 oil paintings and a boatload of other illustrations from the collection of the National Museum of American Illustration, Newport, RI, featuring the work of J.C. Leyendecker (1874–1951) who worked as a commercial artist. He is best known for this Arrow Collar Man advertisements, but he did covers for the Saturday Evening Post too in the early 20th Century. Leyendecker was gay in an era when hiding that identity was often essential to success, but his work reveals how much he loved the beauty of young men.   

He worked in the era before fashion photography dominated, and the ability of illustrators to capture realistic images of people, and to indicate some kind of story, whether for magazines or advertisements, was big business. This image is called “Record Time” and captures the moment during a swim meet as the man in the suit holds a stop watch. It was created for Kuppenheimer & Co of Chicago which sold menswear, including suits. Leyendecker’s illustrations can give you a good idea about what men wore, at least well-off men who had money to spend on nice clothes.

Number 19 on my Queer Icons Pride Project is Artist J.C. Leyendecker Born in 1874, German-American illustrator J. C. Leyendecker has been referred to as the Norman Rockwell before Norman Rockwell. In 1882 the Leyendecker family immigrated to Chicago where J.C. eventually attended Chicago Art Institute. He studied drawing and anatomy under John Vanderpoel's lead. After a short time Leyendecker and his brother made their way across the seas to attend the Julien Acadamy in Paris for a year where he was exposed to Alphonse Mucha a leader in the French Art Nouveau movement. Between the years 1896 and 1950, he painted more than 400 magazine covers. During the Golden Age of American Illustration, for The Saturday Evening Post alone, he produced 322 covers, and many advertisement illustrations for its interior pages. Leyendecker's private life has been up for discussion but it has been generally accepted that he was a homosexual. Leyendecker excelled at depicting male homosocial spaces (locker rooms, clubhouses, tailoring shops) and extraordinarily handsome young men in curious poses or exchanging glances. Leyendecker never married, and he lived with another man, Charles Beach, for much of his adult life. Beach was the original model for the famous Arrow Collar Man and is assumed to have been his lover. J.C. Leyendecker inspires me by his work, it's not only stunning, but fun and playful while also be distinct and precise. Every summer I read The Great Gatsby. I was first forced to read it my sophomore year in high school. My mother was dying, my family was falling apart and I had become very withdrawn. My usually terrifying English teacher assigned me and no one else the task of reading The Great Gatsby. She knew that I drew and painted. She told me to do a series of illustrations from the book. She was ancient, strict, demanding, seemingly cruel, always caustic and had the demeanor of an dowager empress. I was confused by her sudden, specific attention. I suspected I was being set up for some sort of humiliation. But I was wrong. There was great intuition and kindness in her act. I melted into Fitzgerald’s extraordinary prose by the second page. Gatsby is a tragic book. Among the saddest ever written. But it has a strange, elusive power. “There was something gorgeous about him, some heightened sensitivity to the promises of life...it was an extraordinary gift for hope, a romantic readiness which I have never found in any other person and which is not likely I shall ever find again.” I was a ratty looking hopeless hippie kid. Practically feral. Yet somehow Gatsby’s glamour and his unshakable hope and belief in a single perfect dream cut through to my bedrock. I did my illustrations. The first mature works of my life. All my books are about dreamers or are hopeful dreams of the possibilities of joy and life. I owe it in great part to Gatsby and to my peculiar and wise English teacher. FINALLY FINNISHED. I started this back in early November after I came back from the Leyendecker Exhibit in Reynolda. An absolute pleasure it was to see it. ❤️ I did another homage painting to a favorite I saw in the gallery. (I did trace, then readjust or redraw parts to maintain the integrity of the original poses). Leyendecker had the horses mouth open (like in most of his horse paintings), which is artistically beautiful and looked stunning.
