If we really get another season for extraordinary attorney woo, Minwoo better be well-developed, or I'll start a riot, no one is buying the sudden change, and I really don't want our spring sunshine to be trapped in the" I fixed the bad boy with my love" trope, I can accept a character change of heart, but you need to show me the damn growth. 

Also, he getting development doesn't mean that we need excuse his bullshit, change, grow as a person doesn't mean automatic forgiveness.

Mini-review:

When I heard this drama was coming out, I got a bit worried, since k-dramas don't have the best track record when it comes to handling this topic. Thankfully, this show's team mostly pulled it off. Sure, it falls into stereotypes from time to time, but its focus is always on empathy, acceptance and tolerance. It really tries to make the viewer understand how hard and undeservedly misunderstood mental illnesses are. For better or worse, that also means the drama doesn't shy away from showing the darkest parts of these illnesses, so please be very careful if this topic is triggering for you, cause there are a lot of hard-to-watch scenes. In terms of acting, the entire cast is great, especially the actors playing the patients, and Park Bo Young. In fact, this might arguably be her career's crowning achievement. The one thing I didn't really like were the romantic parts. I just didn't care for any of the romances, and the show would've been better off without them. Anyway, Daily Dose of Sunshine surprised me by handling a complex topic in a much more humane and hopeful way that I expected.

 İzlediğimiz ağır dizilere inat, kaliteli ama soft bir diziydi. Konusu nedeni ile çok tereddütlerim vardı. Gereksiz duyar kasan, kasvetli ve duygu sömürüsü dolu bir dizi bekliyordum. Neyse ki çok yanlış bir yanılgıya düşmüşüm. Avukatlık bürosunda geçmesine rağmen son derece gündelik, gerçekçi konular ele alınıyordu.

Woo Young-Woo (Park Eun-Bin) babası tarafından büyütülen tuhaf bir çocuktur. İlk okul çağında rahatsızlığını fark eden babası onun üzerine titrer. En iyi şekilde yetiştirmeye çalışır. Babası Woo Gwang-Ho rolünde, dizilerde baba rolünde görmeyi sevdiğimiz bir oyuncu olan Jeon Bae-Su oynuyor. Anlayışlı, elinden geldiğince yetmeye çalışan bir baba olarak karşımızda. Kendi döneminin iyi avukatlarından biri olmasına rağmen, Woo için mesleğini bırakmış küçük bir lokanta açmıştır. Woo ise küçük yaşta babasının kitaplarıyla ilgilenmeye başladığı için kariyerini oraya doğru çizmiştir. Asperger Sendromlu olmasına rağmen üniversiteyi birincilikle bitirip Hanbada hukuk bürosunda işe girer.

Eğlenceli ve zeki kişiliği ile dikkatleri üzerine çeken Woo, aynı zamanda özel durumu nedeni ile ön yargılara da maruz kalır. Büro, ilk etapta onun altından kalkamayacağını düşündüğü için çaktırmadan basit davaları verir. Ancak Woo, yasal boşluklar ve ayrıntılar ile kimsenin göremediği detayları görebildiği için pratikte de insanların dikkatini çekmeyi başarır.

Aslında dizi otizme dikkat çekmeye çalışmak yerine, otizmli birinin hayatına kısa bir bakış atıyor. Günlük hayatı, insan ilişkileri, yaşadığı zor durumlar, rutinleri gibi kimsenin gözüne batmayan minik detayları anlatıyor. Dizideki karakterde yüksek sesten rahatsız olan biri, kendi düşüncelerini duyamadığı için etrafındaki seslerin çok olması ona rahatsızlık veriyor. Bu nedenle kalabalık yerlerde kulaklık takıyor. Küçüklüğünden beri balinalara takıntılı olan Woo, çoğunlukla kulaklıkla onların seslerini dinliyor. Bir odaya girerken parmakları ile beşe kadar sayıyor. İçinde ne olduğunu görmediği şeyler yemekten hoşlanmıyor. Bunun gibi ufak ufak bir sürü detay ile diziyi renklendirmişlerdi. Her bölüm ayrıca bakılan davalarla farklı sosyal mesajlarda veriliyordu. Ama bu benim en başta korktuğum gibi duyar kasma gibi değil de daha ziyada tatlı bir dille aktarılıyordu.

Mary Temple Grandin adlı gerçek bir kişiden esinlenilerek yazılan Woo karakteri, tam anlamı ile kurudan oluşmuyor. Gerçekten var olan bir insandan referans alınmış. Karakterin yanı sıra konu olan davalarda gerçek avukatların hikayeleri ile şekillenip, yaşanmış olayları baz almışlar. Park Eun-Bin bu rolü 3 kere geri çevirdikten sonra kabul etmek zorunda kalmış. Yazar Moon Ji-Won ve yönetmen Yu In-Sik dizi çekimlerini 1-2 sene erteleme pahasına inatla oyuncuyu istedikleri için kabul etmekten başka çaresi kalmamış. Onlar bu rolü oynayabilecek çok oyuncu olmadığını söylerken, oyuncu ise rolün yüklendiği misyon nedeni ile kimseyi kırıp incitmek istememiş. Anlayacağınız aralarında tatlı tatlı cilveleşmişler.

Başarılı oyuncu Park Eun-Bin’e, Lee Jun-Ho rolü ile Kang Tae-Oh eşlik ediyor. İkilinin uyumu inanılmazdı. Son derece sempatik bir çift olmuşlardı. Küçük bir kadro ile çekilen dizinin bütün yan rolleri ayrıca başarılıydı. Büroda kıdemli avukat olarak hepsinin yönetici olan Jung Myeong-Seok rolündeki Kang Ki-Young ekstra enfesti. Daha önce de dediğim gibi bütün yan rolleri ona verseler ben razıyım. Sempatik, karizmatik, doğal ve başarılı. Ofiste Woo karakterine eşlik eden diğer bayan oyuncu ise Ha Yoon-Kyung idi. İkilinin arasında geçen diyaloglar pamuk şeker tadındaydı.

Günün sonunda kaliteli bir iş ortaya çıkartılmış. Arka planda devam eden karakter hikayeleri 2.sezon anlaşması nedeni ile yarıda kalsa da keyifli zaman geçirtiyor. Kang Tae-Oh’nun askere gitmesi nedeni ile 2.sezonun gelmesi uzunca bir zaman alacak gibi görünüyor. Yine de zaman ayırmaya değer bir dizi olmuş.

Okay, it has been a very eventful day. But I'll tackle one Jikook ask for the road coz I got 1AM on my end.

Anon, Jikookers have something called common sense. Thats how we came to the conclusion that Jikook were living together and even though it might just be occasionally rn for their safety, I will be using present tense.

When members first moved out, Jimin was the only one who purchased a dilapidated house and anyone could tell he sure as hell wasn't living there. So all 6 others were accounted for except him. So where was he living? Then him and JK were sharing cars all the time. For years. Not "a few moments". And when Hopekook became neighbours, we saw Jhope, Jimin and JK share cars a few times. Again, super sus. Why was it always Jikook at the crime scene?

Anyway, let's look at a few moments in no particular order.

Exhibit a) Spotted outside JK's apartment multiple times.

Exhibit b) Namkook on that one live and RM talked about the cafe infront of their house.

Why is he using our and why is JK nodding in agreement? Last I checked Minimoni are the ones who live in 9/1 not JK.

Moving on

Exhibit c) JK says he will make pizza while looking straight at Jimin which is what prompted Jimin to think he was talking about their home.

But then JK clarified that no, he meant at work.

Exhibit d)

When they go home, JK will let Jimin rest. Right. Not sus at all.

Exhibit e) I feel like this sentence went over people's heads.

Jimin doesn't wake up and go look for Jungkook. He wakes up and the first thing he sees, is JK. Thats literally everything right there. Honestly. But sure, I got more.

Exhibit f) My memory is hazy on the context. But RM asked JK why he had watched something. I don't remember what. But JK replied that he watched it because he was at home with him. Him in this case being Jimin.

Exhibit g) Jimin was project manager for BE. So as they were winding up RM told everyone to send their shit to Jimin once they were done.

This part conveniently doesn't get translated but Karmy were kind enough to let us know, when JK taps Jimin's thigh he says; I'll just show it to you.

To recap, anon. Jimin will be at home so everyone else needs to send him their work but JK doesn't need to because he can just show it to him. Because he will already be there with him.

Exhibit h) A favourite of mine. So basically their favorite chef comes over for this episode and brings with him 7 knives including for Suga in absentia. So just so we understand, 7 members, 7 knives.

Basically, members are trying to one up each other and JK is like "we got 2 knives so we win" 👀 Are y'all getting that? Every member left with 1 knife each, but the Park Jeons are way ahead of them because they have 2 knives. Why is JK counting Jimin's knife??

(Side bar: Jimin's face is everything. He knows bae is slipping but he can't do anything without calling attention to it 😂😂)

Exhibit i) Last one since I'm out of image space. This one came from our president. Jimin tells us he hangs about at home naked and Jhope added that JK is usually in charge of music. Jimin's face was e👏🏾very👏🏾thing!👏🏾

Extraordinary Attorney Woo: Thoughts on episodes 11-12 (spoilers!)

Lots to unpack this week.

First, let's talk about romance. Most dramas with a major romantic storyline have a defining moment (kiss) near the midpoint of the series, and a 'Now what?' phase that tends to mess with the plot towards the finale.

And the 'mess' can manifest in different ways, and it's not a bad thing when handled thoughtfully. The most common I can think of:

The writers give the couple something to disagree on / misunderstand because the honeymoon phase only lasts so long on and off screen.

The writers separate the couple because of a third party (family, love triangle, other).

The writers give the couple something to fix that may not have anything to do with their relationship to give the lovey-dovey stuff a break.

The couple gets boring because the relationship is put on the backburner and the writers are flipping a coin whether to set up a wedding or a breakup. (This is the worst.)

This week's episodes have shown signs of the first three. Don't get me wrong, conflict is necessary in any story, otherwise it wouldn't be interesting and succumb to the fourth point. What I love about the romantic storyline in EAW is that it blends well into Young-woo's overarching struggle to be just another person making her way in the world. It makes so much sense that her inexperience and unintended insensitivity would frustrate Jun-ho, seeing how much effort he puts in to be the best possible boyfriend to her.

Gwang-ho's reaction to seeing them kiss, first comical then slightly dramatic (masterful acting from Jeon Bae-soo btw, you just see the words Taesan and Boston pop in his head through his eyes). His decision regarding Tae Su-mi's offer is still up in the air and we don't really know which way he will lean towards once he officially meets Jun-ho.

I'm waiting to see how this unfolds now that trash boy Kwon Min-woo knows, and the preview for the next episode where it seems more people (Jun-ho's family?) are telling him to find someone else.

Now let's talk about the cases / themes.

I must say I wasn't the biggest fan of the lottery jackpot splitting-turned-divorce case of ep 11 (which really said men ain't sh*t except for the men in Young-woo's life minus KMW). I mean, people fight over money all the time so we are bound to see a money-splitting case more than once, but it was a little weak(?) compared to let's say the three brothers' case. The ruling just felt so unrealistic (though I'm not an expert to say it's impossible) and even a bit rushed just so they can show how the husband did a 180 because of the money.

Then there was the issue of attorney-client privilege. I'm sure if it came down to it, there would be a big issue about Young-woo and Jun-ho visiting the gimbap shop if the husband ever decided to sue. But then he died so that was that.

Overall, I felt that while it wasn't a case for Young-woo to showcase her talent and that's ok, the case was a bit too on-the-nose in driving the theme of how men (yes, it's getting a bit misandrist, I know and that's a problem, too) can drastically change in a relationship and that they are not what they seem (poor Su-yeon deserved a better storyline this week).

I think the biggest misstep in ep 11 was choosing to feature another relationship case. We just came from the massive r*pe case from episode 10 so it is inevitable that the audience would automatically look for and speculate looming similarities between the case and the relationship between the leads. Perhaps to minimize ridiculous suspicions towards Jun-ho, they chose to add Su-yeon's storyline to show that anyone, no matter how well-adapted, could fall victim to betrayal and deceit.

The other theme was about Young-woo's inflexibility with the law, which could have been more central in ep 11 but the writer chose another route. This was mostly used to add funny moments in the episode but it didn't have a very sound resolution because the truck did all the work. And let's talk about that truck for a moment. While I'm happy to see the husband's demise given how abusive he became, the accident in itself was so rushed-deus-ex-machina that I was scratching my head when it happened. It cut the looming divorce case so abruptly. It also gave us a chance to see Jun-ho in hug chair mode and more amazing acting from Park Eun-bin and Kang Tae-oh. However, it cuts directly to him walking her home, saying cute things about the hug chair, and another kiss in full light this time.

My problem isn't with the romance, but the lack of transition between the truck accident and the next scene. Maybe the exchange between Tae Su-mi and Kwon Min-woo could have come right after the accident, then have the romantic scene so it ends on the shot of Young-woo's dad catching them. I'm nitpicking at this point but it definitely contributed to how disjointed the episode felt overall.

Episode 12 had the better case and storytelling. I loved seeing Lee Bong-ryun play the activist Attorney Ryu and the return of Judge Ryu from ep 6. I liked the wrongful termination case and how sexist it could be. The outcome wasn't in favor of the underdog, but it felt more grounded in what actually happens due to legal loopholes that favor big companies.

The character of Attorney Ryu was very enjoyable to watch. Loud, but likeable. On the manipulative side, but knew well enough not to throw Young-woo under the trashy bus driven by Kwon Min-woo. She also has a strong sense of morality, but is willing to play with the gray areas of the law. We may never know how she really got the HR manager's notebook and that's ok. See, this is the kind of good characterization I've been missing since ep 9. And well portrayed at that.

Poor Jung Myung-seok went through a lot in this ep. I certainly hope he isn't fatally ill. Stabbing fugitive aside, it was a bit surprising (but also not surprising) to hear him rant about his interpretation of what attorneys do. It was a strange feeling, I felt a bit disappointed in him as Young-woo's mentor but I agreed with him to an extent. It was a practical take on his job as a corporate lawyer.

Along with the legal opinion statement that Hanbada drafted for the company, this certainly puts Young-woo on the crossroads between the expectations of the law firm and the type of lawyer she wants to be by challenging her understanding of right and wrong. A wonderful link to episode 5 (sunflower vs. letter on the wall) as I thought they had forgotten about that for a moment.

It seems we'll have a Jeju-do episode next week so maybe they'll stumble upon a case there about whales. I do hope they'll expedite the secret-child drama and give Su-yeon something substantial next week. At least let her meet Geurami who already calls her an angel!
