No yeah the Patrick Melrose and Festen connections with Kendall especially are so striking (also that fic definitely influenced me a lot when I'd first gotten into the fandom, and I'm always thrilled whenever it updates)

oh yes Festen! I personally haven’t watched it but I read Jeremy say they (I think him and the writers (/producers) ) talked about it during the creation of Succession, so it was definitely in the back of their heads and Jeremy’s.

It’s really interesting how these connections clearly exist to them (as they are influences) while in the show it’s not so direct. Especially with Kendall. Like you wouldn’t think about it at first. I think most of the audience would point to Roman when it comes to sexual abuse, which is valid given his relationship w sex. But with Kendall it’s different, it’s more difficult? So to hear the people behind Kendall speak on their process, the influence and their own thoughts kinda pulls it together to me at least. (Also validating in some ways)

The connection is there and the connective strings are so clear to me (at least to Patrick since I am more familiar with him but for them it was Festen I think aah i should watch it). And it created this dark unspoken cloud behind Kendall.

The fic writer actually introduced me to Edward St Aubyn haha they were heavily influenced by Patrick Melrose if I remember correctly and at least mentioned him once. They are such a lovely writer I can’t wait for their next update whenever it will be xx

“But we had real miracles.” I hissed.

A video reel of moments fluttered across my mind, projecting images against the inside of my head. A loaf of bread, torn before communion. Sweating palms lifted skyward. Lightning passing between Dylan and me as we prayed, a glow reverberating down the skin of our outstretched arms. My hands cupped either side of Christine’s face, looking deep into her eyes and speaking her future in words I believed at the time came directly from G to prophesy a partner at St Michaels was going to be in her life forever. She had glanced momentarily at Oscar. In another memory, Jeremy and I stood in the rain outside St Michaels first thing one Sunday morning calling for the clouds to move away, to leave, to shift across the sky. Our whole gang ate a picnic the same Sunday under a cloudless sky.

I remembered running, so fast, shifting effortlessly at great speed from street to street in Sheffield, one minute outside the City Hall and moments later skidding to a stop near the Cathedral.

“Did we?” Lizzie pressed the red button to stop the tram and we got up to wait near the door.

“Of course we did. You remember when our food increased to include everyone who arrived at Small Group no matter how much we cooked.”

“What if we just made enough for everyone we invited?”

We exited the tram, but didn’t move off the stop while we continued this discussion.

“How often did we pray for people to be healed?” Every service. Morgan finished each sermon with a call to action. He used to say G wanted to heal anyone who was here, to come forward with any ailments from a common cold to a broken leg. G’s presence had anointed us. Morgan would encourage us to gather around and pray for those who had come forward. Oscar, Sebastian and I would touch the hurting part of a person and pray aloud, “Headache be gone. Have faith in the power of Gabriel. May the light of the night brighten your body!”

“Did you see anyone get healed though?” Lizzie’s eyes flashed. It was clear she was hurt by my questioning the way she understood and remembered what had happened at St Michaels.

Those who had limped to the front often limped away, it was true. But as Morgan explained, it took faith to be healed. If your faith wavered, your healing would not come. People claimed their headaches had left them! Someone had seen a broken leg literally grow out, I remembered them saying so. And there were extreme stories too.

One evening, the presence had been particularly heavy. You could feel the power in the very atmosphere of the church. Morgan had invited an elderly wheelchair user to the front of the church, assisted by her grown-up daughter. “Can these old bones rise?” Morgan had cried, quoting the Bible from a story of skeletons pulling on flesh and joining a war. “Can we have two strong lads down here. Oscar, you’re strong, come on down. Sebastian too.” I had been about to volunteer, but he waved me away. “Get an arm under her shoulders, each of you,” Morgan had instructed, kneeling before the small but faith-filled woman in her chair. Dipping a finger into a bag of grey powder, Morgan drew a line above each of her eyebrows, like wings painted across her forehead. “Feel his wings beneath you and RISE!” he cried. Sebastian and Oscar lent an arm and a shoulder to the women, helping her gently but firmly to her feet.

Her sandals touched the floor as she pressed her weight onto one foot and then the other. Her muscles were weakened from years of not walking far. As small as she looked, she weighed heavily against Sebastian, whose face gave the impression he was more responsible for holding her upright than the wings of Gabriel. Together, the three figures stepped out across the stage, one short step after the other, right to left in full view of the congregation.

A low cheer began at the front of the church and rumbled backwards through the rows, clapping and shouting, whooping, hoorays and hallelujahs, “Come on!”s and “He can do it!” (Not she can.) As we watched with our own eyes, this elderly woman literally stepped out in faith, rising from her chair to walk in front of us. “Can these old bones walk?” Morgan shouted, joining the din.

Later, we had seen her daughter, cheeks tear-stained with joy (or something else?), pushing her mother from the building in her wheelchair and using a motorised disabled ramp to lift her into the side entrance of a van specially designed to transport her mother more easily from the nursing home to visit the outside world.

As I shared this story, Lizzie stopped me. “Harry, will you shut up? Don’t you know it is actually gross to use disabled people as a sermon prop,” she said. “I shouldn’t have to explain to you, many people who use wheelchairs can walk short distances and move about. The chair is a tool, not a burden. Hefting an old woman out of the security of her chair to parade her in front of an audience is not evidence of a miracle. If churches want the deaf to hear, they are better off paying for an interpreter to sign the sermon, not a supernatural team to try and pray the deaf away.”

She was right.

“Everything we thought we saw, we didn’t see. Do you understand?”

I did understand her point of view. And yet, I had felt G’s supernatural power. Hadn’t I? The same power had thrown us to the floor at times, and at others, lifted us toward the sky. You cannot dismiss those experiences just because you have become the outsider, gone back to being a non-con. An uneasy silence settled between us. Was I an unbeliever too? The more I tried to find a specific event or example, the less I could locate one.

And yet, here we were, at the gates of the cemetery where Oscar lay buried. And the reality of G’s power, or our belief in it, was real enough to have killed him....

he point is that faith means trusting God in good times and bad even if that includes some suffering until we see his arm revealed in our behalf

Christianity is comforting but it is often not comfortable. the path to holiness and happiness here and hereafter is a long and sometimes rocky one it takes time and tenacity to walk it but of course the reward for doing so is monumental (taught in Alma 32)

a call for diligence and patience in nurturing the word of God in our hearts, waiting as He says with longsuffering, for the tree to bring forth fruit unto you

when will these burdens be lifted? well the answer is by and by and whether that be a short period or a long one – it is not always hours

Batman: Soul of the Dragon

Batman: The Animated Series/DCAU creator Bruce Timm has had less of a full creative voice in many of the recent DC animated DTV films than one might think; he’s had little or nothing to do with the Nu52 film line that recently ended with Justice League Dark: Apokolips War, and his own endeavors outside of that have been decidedly mixed. Sometimes, we get a fun darker-edged Elseworlds tale like Justice League: Gods and Monsters, or the always welcome DC Showcase shorts centered on lesser-known characters like Sgt. Rock or The Phantom Stranger. Other times, we get things like the bafflingly misconceived adaptation of The Killing Joke or the so-mediocre-I-can’t-even-be-mad-at-it Gotham By Gaslight. Thankfully, Batman: Soul of the Dragon is far more in keeping with the former category in its delightful 70s genre cocktail, blending high-energy performance with terrific action and style.

Secret agent Richard Dragon (voiced by longtime fight scene legend Mark Dacascos) has discovered a plot by the Kobra cult and its leader Jeffrey Burr (Josh Keaton, playing WAY against type) to open the Gate, a portal leading to a realm of snake demons ruled over by the devilish Naga (it’s that kind of movie). Dragon has a past with the Gate, and he heads to Gotham City to recruit old friend Bruce Wayne (Grimm’s David Giuntoli), who has become Batman since their time together as students at the mystical mountain realm of Nanda Parbat under O-Sensei (James Hong). Together, they track down fellow old classmates Lady Shiva (Kelly Hu), now the crime lord of Gotham’s Chinatown, and Ben “Bronze Tiger” Turner (Michael Jai White, putting a Black Dynamite spin on a character he previously played under much different circumstances on Arrow). Together, they must stop Burr and his minions from unleashing the aforementioned snake demonpocalypse.

If I sound a little amused at the excesses on display, it’s because I very much am. More than perhaps any other animated Batman media before it, this most resembles what the comics were becoming in the 1970s under writers like the late Denny O’Neill (who gets a dedication here) that took the character onto a far more global and pulp adventure stage than the noir-infested streets of Gotham with the introduction of indelible villains like Ra’s Al Ghul. There’s snake-men, mystical swords, Dragon has received a Bruce Lee-esque makeover (he’s Causcasian in the comics), Ben naturally has an afro, the Batmobile is a sports car Steve McQueen could’ve driven, and we even receive an affecting cameo from Silver St. Cloud, Bruce’s often-seen girlfriend from the 70s runs, to bring the point home. It’s all played in the proper spirit, with Joachim Horsley’s score even getting in on the fun with plenty of funk riffs and John Barry stylings, especially in the Bondian opening credits sequence. Jeremy Adams’ script displays the proper amount of wit and twistiness to boot, with everyone getting to crack wise and have their moments of badassery. It also makes good use of a flashback structure, cutting between past and present in significant and clever ways until all plot points merge for a rousing finale. Though an early scene where Burr dispatches a sex worker through a snake pit is perhaps the only jarring note in the film; creepy and effective, certainly, but it leaves an unpleasant taste in one’s mouth. Better is a later false reassurance towards a group of children he plans to do a blood sacrifice with.

The cast is excellent across the board, which has not always been the case for these outings, but voice director Wes Gleason, to his credit, has hit his stride for the past several and deserves credit for coaxing not-overblown 70s-style performances out of the cast much in the same way Andrea Romano made the adaptation of Darwyn Cooke’s The New Frontier sound like The 50s without falling into stiff caricature. Giuntoli in particular is a pleasant surprise; there have been many Bat-voices, not all of them good, but he finds a nice middle ground of a young and fairly fresh-to-Batmaning Bruce with the familiar authority and presence that can nevertheless be undercut for a laugh (his best moment is a hesitant “I’m...working up to it” when asked why he hasn’t taken down Shiva as a criminal yet). Dacascos has always radiated charisma onscreen and proves to be a cheerfully vibrant Dragon, suave but relatable; he easily steals the film for me. Kelly Hu makes good use of her natural deadpan as Shiva, by turns funny matter-of-fact and totally badass, and White, as he did with Black Dynamite, makes what could have come off as an unfortunate stereotype into something real and distinct; his re-introduction is a quite lovely show of character growth in particular. Hong, a legend who needs no introduction, is a delight in two parts, first as the wise but eccentric mentor, second as the Naga-possessed shell who hams it up accordingly. And while Keaton has played villains before, none have been quite so unnerving in their combination of neuroses and god complex. Several VA ringers fill out the numbers nicely: Erica Luttrell gets one of the better sincere emotional beats in the film as the aforementioned Silver, while Jamie Chung is charmingly petulant as a more heroic version of Jade “Cheshire” Nyugen. Chris Cox has a fun couple of beats with a traitorous zealot, Robin Atkin Downes goes full villainous German as the creepy henchman Schlangenfaust, Patrick Seitz booms out a funny comeuppance scene as a cocky bouncer (and shows off a faux-British accent as a snooty opponent later on), and Grey Griffin does her ice queen routine to great effect.

Visually, the film is excellent, matching the modernized Timm style to the requisite 70s fashions and technology; I liked Bruce’s wall of TV screens in his penthouse being this story’s equivalent to the Batcave. Studio Mir, of course no stranger to great animated fight scenes, accentuates the choreography wonderfully, adding a great deal of snap and character to already well-staged scenes. A particular highlight comes with a fight where Shiva is instructed to only use one finger in her defense, and this goes about as poorly for her opponent as you’d expect. I was pleased also that it didn’t go overboard with the gore and violence, despite its R rating; it’s there, certainly, but far from how excessive it’s occasionally felt in other DC animated ventures.

Batman: Soul of the Dragon is easily one of my favorite of these films in a long time. In particular, I appreciated how Batman is nearly a supporting character, facilitating the others’ extravagance as more of a straight man, though he still gets plenty of good moments (one scene between him and O-Sensei is one of the best summations of the character’s core in ANY creative work, animated or otherwise, I’ve ever witnessed). Also, it has to be said that the ending of this in particular is a blatant and delightful sequel hook that I’d absolutely be onboard to see fulfilled. With the New 52 era behind us, hopefully we’ll get far more stories like this in the wild and strangest corners of the DC universe.

Doesn’t it talk about how differently Ross and Demelza react to her death within the books? I think is shows that as Demelza has a more positive outlook to life she copes in a better way to Ross and perhaps the way fact that they are dealing with it so differently is was drives them apart. They still have love for each other but find it harder to connect. Sorry if I’ve just repaid everything you’ve just said ��

Yeah, Demelza is...she’s described as having a more malleable nature. It’s a bitter, grievous blow, but it doesn’t suck the joy out of life for her. She can still take pleasure in what life brings her. Whereas for Ross, who has never really generated his own happiness, it’s just...he can’t recover from it in any significant way, it’s a wound that in some ways never quite heals. He moves past it eventually, but losing Julia, and losing the Carnmore Copper Company, and being put on trial - it all sort of combines to make him very vulnerable.

In the early pages of ‘Jeremy Poldark’ there’s a couple of paragraphs that really crystallise the difference in their natures:

Since the loss of Julia and the opening of the prosecution against him, he had forced himself to make this walk daily. Or if the mood took him and the weather was favourable he would go out in the new dinghy and sail as far as St Ann’s. Such activity didn’t lift the cloud from his mind, but it helped to set it in proportion for the rest of the day’s tasks. His daughter was dead, his cousin had betrayed him, his much-laboured-over smelting scheme was in ashes, he faced charges in the criminal court for which he might well be sentenced to death or life transportation; and if by some chance he survived that, it would be only a matter of months before bankruptcy and imprisonment for debt followed. But in the meantime fields had to be sown and reaped, copper had to be raised and marketed, Demelza had to be clothed and fed and cherished – so far as it was in his scope to cherish anyone at this stage.

It was Julia’s death which still hit him hardest. Demelza had grieved no less than he, but hers was a more pliant nature, responding involuntarily to stimuli that meant little to him. A celandine flowering out of season, a litter of kittens found unexpectedly in a loft, warm sunshine after a cold spell, the smell of the first swathe of hay: these were always temporary reliefs for her, and so sorrow had less power to injure her. Although he didn’t realize it, much of the cherishing this year had been on her side.

And that just sets the tone for the next few years, for them. Demelza tends to look forward; Ross tends to look back. And as you say, it makes it harder for them to connect. Ross looking backwards also makes him vulnerable to Elizabeth’s games, because in his eyes, at this point, she’s a perfect ideal, unmarred by the loss of a child or a livelihood or the realities of living day to day with someone.

Displaced - Spencer Keeton Cunnigham (BFA 2010) Please join Spencer for the closing reception of Displaced at 6pm on February 9 at The Midway Gallery. He is consistently working on new ideas for art whether that is in the form of paintings, drawings, murals and installations that dive deep into topics relating to his personal relationship on Native American rights, cultural representation, social change and activsm. Spencer’s artwork has been on broadcast television, in motion pictures and exhibited throughout the U.S. and beyond. His art can currently be found on display in the Permanent Collection of the Berkeley Art museum, The Crocker Museum in Sacramento and in print form in the permanent book collection at the Smithsonian Museum of the American Indian in Washington D.C. Cunningham was also recently inducted into the World Congress of Art History in Bejing China by Art Historian Elaine O'Brien.

“Rackets” and “Laminates” – Richard Goldberg (MFA 1987) Opening February 1 at 1pm at Far Out Gallery, this show will feature selections from two recent groups of work: “Rackets” and “laminates”.

The “Rackets” are an ongoing group of wall mounted, mixed media sculptural works. Theses sculptures are made with a variety of found objects and materials which take on new identities and meanings as they are synthesized into a single artwork of rhyming shapes, forms and imagery. Each “Racket” work has its own engaging identity, and story to tell.

Shown alongside of the “Rackets” will be collages that are called “Laminates” These works are 2 dimensional, irregular shaped collages of images, symbols, photographs and other visual material. These shaped collages are then laminated and cut out, to become a kind of flat sculpture with shapes and voids around the perimeter of each collage but also within and throughout the entire composition. They are floated in a shadow box frame which brings out their 3 dimensionality. The “Laminates” were a product of an evolution of ideas and impulses that lead the artist to move on to the more robust 3 dimensionality of the “Rackets”.

Mike Henderson: The Black Paintings (MFA 1970): Showcasing a body of related works made primarily in the 1990s by recent Artadia Award winner Mike Henderson, the paintings included in this exhibition feature a rich palette of lush blacks, steel grays, and ultramarine blues. Set against the darkness, small shapes of bright blues, yellows, and reds flicker like jewels. Henderson’s experimental films from the 1960s, 70s, and 80s will be shown in dialogue with the paintings. Politically charged and wickedly funny, these remarkable shorts have been screened at museums and festivals around the world. David Simpson: Interference (BFA 1956): Acclaimed Bay Area painter David Simpson’s exhibition takes its title from his use of “interference” pigments, which shift in color with changes in light and the viewer’s perspective. Each canvas on view is the result of up to thirty coats of paint, meticulously layered to create a deep, lustrous surface. Now in his 90s, Simpson continues to delight with works of remarkable dynamism, evoking the movement of clouds, or the play of light across water, ultimately offering viewers a powerful space of contemplation.

American Veterans of Arkansas – Edward Drew (BFA 2014) The Mosaic Templars Cultural Center Museum in Little Rock, Arkansas has commissioned a year-long exhibition from Edward Drew, American Veterans of Arkansas, which uses 5 x 7 tintypes to profile African-American military veterans who are also Arkansans. “African Americans are fairly underrepresented in most sectors, including veterans and veteran contributions to this country,” Drew said. “I thought it was important tthat I speak to the narrative. Then, being a state in the South, it’s important to show tha the rick history of the Southern states has always coincided with African American contributions.”

The dreadful news left Elijah completely devastated. His heart clumped up down even worse than he had ever thought possible.

"This cannot be" the vampire crumpled the note in his hand that it was made into dust.

"I am so truly sorry, brother." Klaus said putting his hand on the vampire's shoulder sympathetically.

"No, this is not true. I would have felt it. I am sure I would have felt it. No. What proof do they have? No proof!" Elijah said shaking his head. Throwing the note into the fire he walked out of the room.

"Elijah!!" Klaus shouted going after his brother.

This time the vampire could not stop his brother from departing.

"I need to go and have proof that she is no more. I need to. Please look after the family. I am sorry, brother, but this is something I have to do." Elijah said and jumped on his horse.

Klaus understood as he knew what love can do to a vampire of their kind. The heightened emotions ran far deeper when the matter of the heart was concerned, as he himself loved a certain blond vampire he had met on his trip to Baton Rouge.

Flashback

A month earlier, at a private Ball

Klaus stood next to his friend and confidante, Marcel Gerard as he spotted the blonde walking in. His was immediately taken in, mesmerized by her beauty.

"Pray tell, who is this divine creature walking to the Viceroy's wife?"

"That's Miss Caroline Forbes. But, I have to tell you now that there are rumours of her being engaged to the young Count, Lorenzo St. John."

"A rumour? Is she or isn't she engaged?” Klaus said not taking his eyes off Caroline, as he was able to ask for her hand in marriage there and then.

But, unfortunately, a day after, he found out that she was engaged. And though, he could not hope that she could ever be his, his heart attached itself to her nevertheless.

The news of Elena's demise spread among her friends rapidly, and they mourned the loss.

But somewhere in the Northern territories, Elena and Hayley were alive, but imprisoned. After they were ambushed, the hybrids clan leader decided not to kill them.

"Death would be too easy for them. Let them feel all we have felt from their kind." Silas Wulfing said.

"I am so going to enjoy this torture"

Both huntresses were undergoing weeks of terrible torture and pain.

At the same time, Elijah joined the forces of the 5th Vampire regiment that was battling the hybrids near Mystic Falls, desperately trying to find something about Elena, meeting Jeremy in one of the battles.

"You have met my sister?" Jeremy said surprised as they sat down for a rest inbetween battles.

"I had the fortune to meet her in New Orleans this spring. At the Garden Ball," Elijah said,"but our meeting was not a very pleasant one."

"I can only imagine. Elena doesn't really like all the pomp and the world of the rich and - the rich. Although we were given a title, we know where we come from."

"Yes, she has made it very clear." Elijah evoked the memory of their early meetings.

"I believe she was frank, laying her opinions right out, without any inhibitions." Jeremy said.

"Indeed." Elijah agreed. "She was- I mean she is very strong-minded."

"You- also believe that she is not dead."

"The hybrids always make an example of killing hunters as you know. They would have already sent - her “ Elijah couldn’t bring himself to utter the word.

"Her head." Jeremy said, remembering other of her fellow hunters that met the horrific end. "Yes, that gives me hope, too. But they might have taken her as a slave or the worst- they have turned her into one of them."

"How is that possible?"

"The hybrid witches are very capable of doing that. This is why we have to kill every last one of them," Jeremy said and stood up, "If I do not see you again Count Mikaelson, I wish you all the best, and maybe we will meet again, in better circumstances. It's been an honour."

Elijah got up as well now putting his hand out to the young hunter. They shook hands and the vampire said-

"The honour has been mine."

Jeremy left the tent and went off, as a hunter, he had the privilege to go on separate missions.

Elijah sat down and took out a drawing of Elena that Valerie had given him.

"Wherever you are, hold on, my love. I will find you." the vampire whispered, his heart praying that she didn't meet the horrific fate.

And as if she could hear him, her mind, her body and her soul fluttered with love.

Days turned into weeks, weeks into months

Elijah, same as Jeremy continued to fight the hybrids, being triumphant, pushing the hybrids further north. Although he was awarded leave, Elijah stayed at the border. He had regularly received letters from all his family members, one particular made him happy. It was the one stating that Kol had proposed to Bonnie and that she had accepted his hand in marriage, but they would not get married until he returned home, and had found Elena.

At the hybrid stronghold, Elena, together with Hayley was still not let free. But as huntresses, they were trained to endure the most harrowing torture, especially mentally.

"I will kill you" Elena spat at the Hybrid.

"Shshsh" Mason said."I am not here to harm you."

Elena looked at hybrid not understanding what was going on.

"I have come to set you free, but under these conditions."

"What conditions? Who are you?" Elena spat.

"I am Lord Mason Lockwood and I have claimed to take you as my mate."

"I would rather die than become a hybrid's mate." Elena shot at the hybrid.

"I will help you escape, but not if I do not agree to my terms." Mason said.

"Why would you do that?" Elena said.

"Well, you have something I want."

Elena looked at hybrid Lord perplexed. He continued.

"Mystical blood. It has powers that could make me very powerful, but it has to be done in a witch's ritual, that will be incorporated in the wedding ceremony as no one can suspect anything." Mason said.

Elena thought for a second and with a heavy-heart agreed.

A year later

Elena got out of the coach and told her companion that she wished to go the rest of the path to the village on foot.

"As you wish Lady Lockwood," the man said,"but you should have a guard go with you, just in case."

Elena waved it off, and as the coach went she took to the woodlands. Though she expressed that she did no need an escort, the Lockwood guard followed her nevertheless. After a mile or so, they got out of the edge of the woods to a lake, where a magnificent Plantation House was set nearby. Elena stood for a moment admiring the view when her memory brought on a picture of the place she had seen in the Mikaelson House in New Orleans.

"Pemberly" Elena uttered.

"Are we going Ma'm?” the Guard asked.

"Yes"- Elena said and they now walked to the house as Elena decided she wanted to see it from the front side.

As they reached the house, a steward walked out.

"Hello. How can I help you Ma’am" the man said.

"Hello" Elena said and now explained who she was and that she had once seen the house and was intrigued by it.

"This is the Old Mikaelson Plantation house, one of three the family owns. But they very rarely come here as it is too close to the border. Only the eldest Count Mikaelson came out here last winter."

"The eldest? Elijah Mikaelson?" Elena asked.

"Yes, Ma'am. The Count has been with the 5th Vampire Regiment fighting for over a year. He has become quite a hero. I don't know if you have heard, but he and his platoon were responsible for storming in Mystic Falls taking it back."

"No, I have not heard. I've been away. I have just arrived from Baton Rouge" Elena was fibbing a little as she couldn't give out details of her whereabouts.

"Would you like to see the house from the inside?"

"Yes, I would like that very much." the huntress said and she followed the steward in.

Walking around, her eyes were mesmerized by the beauty of the old place.

As the came to the Grand Corridor, where all the Mikaelson's family portraits were hanging, Elena stood still in front of Elijah's.

Her heart felt all warm as all the memories of him now came rushing in, flaring up like it once did as she read his letter. She gazed at the portrait dreamily.

"Master Elijah is the most kind and the most thoughtful of them all,” the steward said, “he kept the family together as their father and mother had died. He makes the Mikaelson family even more proud than any of their ancestors have ever done. We pray that he returns from the battlefield unharmed and that one day when the war is won, settles down and marries, and starts his own family."

"He did not marry?" Elena now slipped, her eyes not moving from the painting.

"No, Ma'am. He devoted his life to the Army." the steward replied.

“Lady Lockwood," the Guard that was accompanying Elena now said," it looks like a storm is coming. Maybe we should make our way back."

"Yes, we'd better go." Elena said, swaying her look to the garden. The clouds were darkening and it had smelled of rain already.

"If you permit I will go and fetch the coach or a horse, as it has started to rain." the Guard said.

Elena nodded and the faithful hybrid left.

"I would have offered you to stay, Ma'am, but without my Masters present I am not at liberty to do so." the steward said.

"I understand fully. It is quite all right. Don't disturb yourself." Elena thanked the steward for letting her see the house, she walked to the door to get out.

"It was a delight to show you the house, Lady Lockwood." the steward said as he opened the door for her.

In that moment as she was about to step out, she stopped still, her heart pounding uncontrollably as she was now face to face with none other but Elijah himself.

The vampire now, stood there in front of her like he was struck by lightning, looking at the brunette like she was an apparition.

Her voice so clear, so soft saying- "Count Mikaelson"- brought Elijah back from his state of apparent shock, letting all inside of him loose, his feeling blustery inside of him like the wind whipping outside. He now slipped faintly forgetting all good manners, "You are - alive-"

"I am." Elena muttered her eyes firmly fixed on his.

The gladness of seeing her there, alive and well, even more beautiful than before made Elijah tear up unconsciously. And if it was not for his steward standing there, he would have enveloped her in his arms and never let go.

Elijah collected himself and nodding a little. "I apologize for the lack of manners. May I say how it is so very good to see you are alive and well, Lady Gil," the vampire’s mind retrieved the information that the steward had called her a different name and he corrected himself, "Lady Lockwood, I believe."

And his eyes shifted, reflecting now the pain that shot in his heart realizing that the change of title indicated that she was married.

"Thank you, Count Mikaelson." Elena replied.

Elijah now turned to his steward asking him to prepare some tea and refreshments, and now referring to the weather worsening turned to Elena. But before he could speak, Elena, understanding that he was about to invite her to stay, said-

"This is so very kind of you, but -" she stopped there. Her warm hazelnut eyes streamed a loving thank you, but I cannot stay.

"Yes, I understand." Elijah now said letting a little silent sigh out.

Elena nodded a little now and then, in a very dear sweet manner said-

"I am equally glad to see you are well. Your steward has told me of your engagement at the north-eastern border with the 5th Vampire Regiment- and liberation of Mystic Falls."

"Yes." Elijah said.

And there they were, silence enveloping them. Time seemed to have stopped. There was nothing, just them. Hearts beating-

Alright, everything is alright Since you came along And before you I had nowhere to run to Nothing to hold on to I came so close to giving it up. And I wonder if you know How it feels to let you go?
