I've seen like two videos of Aerith and Barret from Rebirth and I've been thinking about their relationship ever since and im shambles, like

Barret didn't know Aerith before they officially met, and first he heard of her it was during a life or death situation where his babygirl was in danger but Barret had to be on the frontlines to try to keep everyone safe

And he had left Marlene back at Tifa's bar and then Cloud and Tifa come to find him after days where they had disappeared and Cloud was thought dead,

And They tell him that they left Marlene in the care of someone they trust but was a perfect stranger for Barret

And he doesn't even have time to freak out because he has to make sure the Turks don't blow up the pillar holding the plate but he can't have been at ease with this

And then when he officially sees Aerith for the first time she has been kidnapped by the Turks and Tseng is brutalizing her, Cloud and Tifa panics, and yet this girl that Barret didn't know, who was being hit in front of him, just takes the hurried time she has reassuring Tifa that she brought Marlene somewhere safe.

Like for Barret it was a total stranger who got in danger to protect his daughter, and while now this stranger was in danger and in pain, her full concern was on making sure everyone knew Marlene was safe while also dropping hints of where she was for Cloud to bring the squad back to Aerith's house

She was a total stranger who didn't hesitate to put herself in danger to protect Barret's daughter and make it her priority over anything that happened to her

No wonder then Barret is totally with Tifa and Cloud when it's time to rescue her, and i think Barret and Aerith should interract more after that

I don't recall any scenes that aren't group scenes with them but tbh i saw their linked attack from Rebirth where they're both dorka and it made me cry on the spot it's so soft

​Berthasaura is just *barely* losing @a-dinosaur-a-day​‘s DMM poll and if the only remaining Noasaur loses to a friggin Spinosaur I might actually riot

A vote for Berthasaura is a vote for all Noasaurs, arguably the weirdest collection of non-avian theropods to ever exist. A vote for Berthasaura is, by extension, a vote for:

- Masiakasaurus “why are your teeth like that“ knopfleri of Prehistoric Planet fame, a genuíne Madagascan weirdo

-  Vespersaurus “only dinosaur that walks on one toe” paranaensis (yes that includes all birds), tragic second place of the previous round

- Limusaurus “are you sure that’s even a theropod” inextricabilis, which started out like normal little baby theropods before losing their teeth and becoming quasi-ornithomimid beaked herbivores, and its fellow Elaphrosaurines

- Noasaurids are also the closest relatives of Abelisaurs, which should be worth extra brownie points

And Berthasaura itself was no slouch either! In addition to being arguably The Most Ornithopod of any theropod (vote for wacky convergent evolution!), it evolved its toothlessness independently of the Elaphrosaurines, and was toothless its entire life! Friggin Noasaurs don’t even do toothlesness the same way twice apparently. Berthasaura also holds the distinction of being the second ever toothless non-ceolosaurian theropod to be described, and it had a nearly complete skeleton! Berthasaura was an ornithomimid before ornithomimids became cool (or even existed), an early-cretaceous throwback to Shuvosaurids, the first of a long line of weirdo theropods. Peak dinosaur, 9/10.

Meanwhile Ceratosuchops is what, a Baryonychine with a horn on its head? Boo, unoriginal, 4/10. The horn ain’t even that big. It’s only known from some fragments of a skull (again: compare to Berthasaura’s remarkably complete skeleton) and in all honesty I’m just tired of Spinosaurs at this point. I couldn’t even keep track of whatever Spinosaurus drama was happening back when I was deep in my early Covid paleo hyperfixation and I'm kinda scared to check in on it. Apologies to Darren Naish, but I’ve had a petty grudge against spotlight-stealing Spinosaurs since like the third post-2014 Spinosaurus paper and it sure as hell-herons ain’t going away now. Sure, Ceratosuchops was a heron-analogue with a cool name, but it’s not even a proper heron mimic. If you want some real convergent evolution, vote for Berthasaura. 

Am I deliberately skimping on Baryonychine facts due to a petty grudge against the most famous member of the family? Yes definitely absolutely. They get enough attention as is. And what do they have that Noasaurs don’t? Weird teeth and an aquatic diet? See Masiakasaurus. Big fore-claws? See Noasaurus. Large size? Overrated, and Deltadromeus might be a Noasaur so they even have that covered. Sail-backs and a semiaquatic lifestyle? That’s Spinosaurus bias talking, vote for Bajadasaurus or Annakacygna instead. Spinosaurs may be fan-favorite weirdo dinosaurs, but I think that Noasaurs were objectively weirder and deserve to advance in the polls. Vote Berthasaura for a weirder, wackier theropod (and a way to unload that pent-up anti-Spinosaurus grudge, if you like)

I’m going to have to re-record Mink, Clear, Noiz, AND ViTri... again. After recording Koujaku’s route from the delayed stream, I discovered the volume was low, so I tried bumping it up (both on the native dmm player and my sound card). I was an hour and 15 minutes into recording when the stream died.

Fuck.

But then we were talking about video quality and I realized I’d recorded everything in the default aspect ratio of 720p. Which is adequate for most purposes, but I need that Kouao in HQ graphic form, baby. So I adjusted it, took a couple hours to rest my eyes (you wouldn’t think watching something would be draining, but when you’re full of executive dysfunction and not allowed to switch around windows or see what’s new on the tumblrs, it’s more draining than you’d guess) and went at it again.

This time, I’m finally pleased with what I’ve got. I still need to trim off like three seconds from the opening, but then it’s good to go. And then... I just have to re-record everyone else’s, record Ren’s (which will be available tomorrow), and edit it all. While arranging everything for my move. That’s not stressful at all.

At least I have my boys to stare at while I work on everything.

Time: 54 to 48 million years ago, in the Ypresian of the Eocene 

Location: Sandwich Beds, Fossil Butte Member, Green River Formation, Wyoming; and the Messel Formation near Darmstadt, Germany 

Today, over half of the birds known in the world are passerines, or “perching birds”. Unfortunately, these birds on average are small and delicate, leading to their not having the most robust fossil record compared to other birds. However, the fossils of passerines we do have tell us an interesting story about their evolution. Eofringillirostrum, despite being a very early member of the total-passeriform group (ie, it isn’t a true passerine, but close), shows how many of the traits we see in modern representatives occurred fairly early on in their evolution. Eofringillirostrum had a finch-like beak, similar to living species, that would have been helpful in eating small hard seeds - a niche not easily exploited. While we often think of birds as “seed-eaters”, this is not common and only exploitable by certain species - and, apparently, some early passerine relatives like Eofringillirostrum. This indicates that different early relatives of passerines were already doing very similar ecological jobs to their living relatives, even while many other bird types were exploiting passerine-like niches (such as the many types of stem-mouse birds that lived at the time). Both the Messel Pit and the Fossil Butte environments were tropical forests, emerging right after the Paleocene-Eocene Thermal Maximum; both were associated with fossil lakes, which allowed for rapid preservation of a variety of early animals that show how “modern” life first diversified in the Paleogene period. As such, Eofringillirostrum just has too many neighbors to list - including so many kinds of birds its a little overwhelming. Eofringillirostrum, in this environment, would have been one of many different species of birds, and weirdly modern looking among them!

Name Meaning: O’Neill’s Tanager of the Sun God Inti 

Time: Unknown to the present, Holocene, Quaternary 

Location: Western Bolivia and Southern Peru, South America  Rarely do we get to talk about a newly discovered living species of bird, but this is one of those excellent times! This bird, a bright yellow tanager with a distinctive black stripe across its eye, was found in the Neotropics - specifically in the Yungas region. Given that Latin America has the largest number of bird species in the world, it makes a certain amount of sense that we may have missed some! First spotted in the nineties, it was properly identified and described over the course of the 2010s. The distinctive appearance of this tanager lead to it being nicknamed the “Kill Bill Tanager”, in reference to its similarity to Uma Thurman’s yellow jumpsuit outfit. Distinct in appearance and population from other tanagers, it was deemed not only a separate species, but an entirely separate genus. It is migratory, breeding in the northern Machariapo Valley and going down to the eastern Andes for the nonbreeding season. It lives in deciduous forests, and breeds in bamboo grasses. It is a loud and vocal bird, making distinctive songs and choruses that happen long after the dawn chorus of most other birds. As it lives in a fairly isolated region of these countries, its habitat is not particularly threatened at this time.
