Leon Oswald, Sora Naegino, Ken Robbins, Haruhi Fujioka, Tamaki Suoh, Hitachiin Hikaru how do they react when the reader kisses them and runs away?
Reader kiss them and run away
Tumblr media
[ SCENARIO ] [ Leon, Sora, Ken, Haruhi, Tamaki, Hikaru ]
[ Kaleido Star ] [ Ouran High School Host Club ]
Tumblr media
I don't know why but I feel like I had recived a lot of requests like this one (not complaining tho), mhhh... Is because i write it good or because is a cute prompt?
My first time writing for Leon!! Yeeeeey :D thank u anon!! I really love him, his character development and all that he has behind, his history and sadness!! He truly is an amazing character!!
Tumblr media
Leon Oswald
Leon has created a very bad reputation for how he had treated his past teammates, however that is not exactly how he is, in reallity Leon is really caring towards the one he loves and care (he just doesn't show it)
When it comes to how open he is with his love and how affectionate he is it would depend on if you two are in a relationship or not, if not he isn't too open with it but there are some hints that make it obvious but if you two are already together he will be more obvious with his love
Even when Leon is open with his love he does it in indirect or subtle ways, holding your hand or even holding you (sometimes he rests his hand on your back like trying to support you), or also being physicaly close to you all the time he can, he is more by showing it by subtle ways and he isn't shy with the affection, however when it comes to kisses he prefers to keep it in private, there is no need to be showing off like that
Leon finds kisses as a rather cute gesture, it doesn't surprise him (even if you try to surprise him it won't surprise him much) so he react immediatly when you run away, still he just looks at you run for a moment before laugh softly and go after you (not exactly running, and only if it isn't because you wanted to give him a little kiss before getting busy, like a good luck kiss)
However, if is the case that you two aren't a couple yet he will be kinda confused and troubled by your gesture, even a little anxious since you had run away, he doesn't want to asume or feel like if you were just playing with him, he will go after you (again, without running) and when he found you he confront you about it (he could seem mad but he isn't). In the other hand, if this is the first time you two kiss he will feel a little anxious when you run away (it kinda bring him bad memories), he goes after you and isn't able to properly calm down until he catch you
Even when Leon doesn't exactly runs after you it doesn't take him much time to catch you in a hug before saying how cute you are and giving you a soft kiss on the head (however if there is too much people around he probably would be more suble). If you had run away out of shyness he find it even more cute and will tease you a little without even having the intention, if you had did it for being mischievous he just laughs at it
Tumblr media
Sora Naegino
Sora is so friendly and expressive that is just part of her nature be open with her love for you, however when you two aren't a couple yet she tries to be subtle with it
Sora can be pretty affectionate and touchy if you are comfortable with it, she gets a little shy when it comes to be romantic with you but that doesn't stop her (she is already used to romantic stories for the Kaleido's presentations), still she isn't exactly the cheesy type, she is more the type to be your best friends and girlfriend
She doesn't mind much being physicaly close to you and small touches, like hands holding or even hugging (she can get used to it pretty quickly), as well Sora isn't easy to make flustered so it isn't too much trouble for her to recive physical affection, however a kiss is something more intimate and that is what will make her a little nervous and flustered
It actually take her a while to get used to kisses (specially on the lips), every time you kiss her she is surprised and flustered for a moment before trying to brush off her nervousness, but when you kiss her and then run away is something even more unexpected
Sora stay quite for a moment, processing what happened before running towards you (pretty flustered and blushy), Sora is asking you to please stop while running towards you and it doesn't take her much time before catching you, when she does she take a moment to breath before bombarding you with questions, letting go her nervousness with it. Sora take it pretty well and even jokinly, she may want to kiss you again and properly this time but she is nervous about doint it (specially if you were embarrassed of what you have done)
If you had run away out of shyness it take her a second to realice it and she will laugh at it, she isn't trying to make fun of you is just that he find it pretty hilarious and cute! If you have done it for being mischievous Sora will be dumbfounded and blush a little more, but will try to cover her flustered state while try to joke about it
If you have done it when you two aren't dating yet Sora will have troubles to follow you, so is more probably that she doesn't do it, instead she softly touches where you kissed her with a blush and think about it, when she finally put his mind in order she go after you to be able to talk about this and make clear her feelings for you too
Tumblr media
Ken Robbins
Ken can be pretty shy and clumsy when it comes to romance, what can lead him to be pretty open with his love even when is still just a crush, but other times he shows how caring and supportive he is by other ways (not exactly being an accident this time)
When it comes to show his love and being affectionate Ken rely more on words and indirect actions, his love for you is stronge but he is too shy to show it in a more physical way, even just little touches like holding hands can turn him into a flustered mess (even when in a relationship)
Ken would be lying if he says that he doesn't want to kiss you, but is just something too direct for him, he is already pretty shy when it come to romance and a kiss can be pretty overwhelming (he prefers to wait a while to do it)
When you do kiss him is something that it take him by surprise (even if your intentions where obvious it would still surprised him), he barely can react when you start running away, Ken become a flustered mess at the moment your lips touched him so when you run away he doesn't had fully process it yet, and without doing it he just get worried of you, so when he finally can react (at least enough) he ask you to wait and start running towards you
It would take him a while and there is a posibility that he doesn't manage to catch you (still he won't stop looking for you), when he does find you he immediatly ask you why you had run away while trying to catch his breath, he is kinda worried that something had happened, is like in his mind he doesn't fully get it that it was for the kiss
If you had run away out of shyness he can understand it pretty well, and he tells you that with a nervous smile, getting all flustered again, and yet he tries to help you (or the two of you) calm down. In the other hand, if you did it for being mischievous he gets flustered again, thinking that you will something like that it makes his heart skip a beat
If is the case that you two aren't a couple yet he will be hesitant on going towards you, so is more probably that he waits a little to think about it before looking for you, and when you two see each other again he will ask you about it, flustered and all nervous but he still want to know what you meant with that gesture
Tumblr media
Haruhi Fujioka
Haruhi is a more calm person, even when she falls in love she never lose her calm and mature personality, is something that it will be expressed on her feelings too. She isn't too obvious with her feelings but she doesn't has problems with admiting them
Haruhi isn't always directly affectionate (or in a physical ways), she is more the type to show her love by actions and sometimes words, however she doesn't mind being physicaly affectionate (but she will prefer to show that on the relasionship rather than before)
Haruhi had no problem with showing or receiving physical affection, as well she normally doesn't do a big deal out of it but that doesn't mean she doesn't like it, she isn't easily flustered not even with kisses (but she prefers to keep that to when being in private). When you kiss her it could surprise her if you do it out of the blue or for the first time, otherwise she isn't too surprised and even giggle at the affection (everytime you kiss her on the lips she corresponds)
How she react about you running away will depend in other factors, if you two aren't dating yet she will follow you almost immediatly at when you start running, even asking you to please stop, she wants to be able to ask you directly why did you do that and if that means you have romantic feelings for her, if you two are already dating is more likely that she just let you run away and confront you about it until you two see each other again, calling you silly for running away and laughing softly. In the case this was the first time you two kiss she will run after you too, it is a little unfair that you just run away so she will try to catch you to ask you why you had run away (being kissed in a rush like that isn't exactly her ideal so is probably that she kiss you again but properly this time)
If you had run away out of shyness she can understand your reason but still doesn't see why do it, still she finds it rather cute, if you did it for being mischievous she just sighs at it before smiling, she is already used to this kind of mischief on behalf from the hosts but didn't exactly expected it from you (unless you had already done something like this before)
Tumblr media
Tamaki Suoh
Tamiki is always really flirty and romantic for being a host, but he himself tent to be that way too normally, aside from being pretty extrovert and childish, he is pretty obvious with his love and yet he doesn't get it for a long time
When it comes to be affectionate he has no shame with doing it, he is affectionate with words and actions, and that just increase when he accept his feelings and more when you two start dating
As romantic and flirty Tamaki is he actually can be pretty shy when it comes to something so personal to him as the person he loves, so he usually is flirty and romantic but with when you are directly affectionate to him he quickly gets flustered, that is why he will be incredibly nervous when it comes to kisses, it isn't like he doesn't want to is just something a little overwhelming for him
When you do kiss him is something that will shock him for the first times (it will take him a while to get used to it), he becomes a blushing embarrassed mess so quickly that he is unable to react, he can't even say something so when you run away he is even more surprised
He feels like this is like a scene out of a fairy tale, thinking that you are probably too shy and embarrassed by it (something that it flustered him even more), in his mind he should go after you like a gentleman, catch you in his arms and tell you how cute you are teasingly before having a romantic kiss but that isn't going to happen since he isn't able to do anything, his flustered state doesn't leave him to move, so he has to wait a while until you two see each other again
If you had run away out of shyness is how he thought it was, he finds it extremely cute and, now that he isn't complety flustered he is able to tell you how cute you are, however if you have did it for being mischievous Tamaki get flustered again, this isn't the reason he thought of why you had run away (it isn't like he dislike it though)
Is more probably that he go after you if you two aren't dating yet, is something so unexpected but he loves it, Tamaki tries to ignore his embarrassed state to follow you to be able to ask you that if that means you like him back
Tumblr media
Hikaru Hitachi
Hikaru isn't too open or obvious with his love, specially if you two aren't dating yet (still his brother can easily notice his feelings), however he tent to show jealousy and a little possessiveness from time to time
Hikaru isn't exactly affectionate, he is more the joker and teasing type, specially if you two aren't dating, also he tent to feel embarrassed and flustered for his own feelings so that is why he tries to cover them, if you two are already together he will be more affectionate but mainly in private, when he feels emotional or tries to make it seem like it isn't a big deal
Hikaru has some troubles while showing affection (even when he shows otherwise), he prefer to take things slowly while he gets used to it, so a kiss it would be a little too much for him, specially if is unexpected
When you do kiss him it would surprised him a lot, he just stand there while you kiss him because he is unable to react, when you start running away Hikaru is still unable to react, he watch you run while being a flustered blushing mess, but when he finally get back into his senses he is immediatly running after you
Hikaru feels frustrated and irritated for what you have just done, mainly because he feels like if you were playing with him (he isn't mad for being kissed by you, what irritated him is the fact that you had run away), specially if you two aren't dating yet, if is that way he is even more frustrated because you had made him a flustered mess, for not explaining anything, for running away, but, more important, because he want you to clarify the meaning of your actions, he doesn't want to get excited over something that is just a joke for you
When he finally catch you (because he won't give up until he does and grows more frustrated as more time pass without being able to catch you), he make you look at him directly, he seems mad but his inmense blush contradict him
If you had run out of shyness Hikaru becomes really flustered once again because he find it really cute but he tries to calm down (when he finally calm down he wil teasing you for it, you won't hear the end of it), however if you have done it for being mischievous he is completely flustered in a whole different way, he was supoused to be the one who do those kind of things not you, and yet he can't help but love it and wonder it you would do something like this in the future again

Happy Birthday Scottish actor Angus Macfadyen born 21st September 1963 in Glasgow.
MacFadyen had a nomadic upbringing; thanks to his father’s job with the World Health Organization, he spent his childhood and adolescence in places no less diverse than Africa, Australia, France, the Philippines, Singapore, and Denmark. He went on to attend the University of Edinburgh and received theatrical training at the Central School of Speech and Drama. MacFadyen got his professional start on the Edinburgh stage, appearing in a number of productions at the famed Fringe Festival.
Breaking into television in the early ‘90s, Angus appeared in a number of series for the BBC, including an acclaimed adaptation of David Leavitt’s The Lost Language of Cranes. Following the critical and commercial success of Braveheart, the actor got a rudimentary dose of recognition across the Atlantic, but remained largely unknown outside of the U.K. He starred with Gabriel Byrne and Bill Campbell in the World War II drama The Brylcreem Boys in 1996, playing a German pilot being held captive in neutral Ireland. Until 1998, when he portrayed Peter Lawford in the made-for-cable The Rat Pack, MacFadyen’s other screen appearances tended to be in films that were widely ignored by audiences and critics alike.
He has played Orson Welles in Tim Robbins’ 1999 film, Cradle Will Rock, Philip in the BBC’s production of The Lost Language of Cranes, Dupont in Equilibrium and Jeff Denlon in the Saw series of films
Some of you might remember Angus in the excellent Takin’ Over the Asylum which also starred two great actors in Ken Stott and David Tennant. We last say him on the big screen in very underrated The Lost City of Z
Angus reprised his role of The Bruce last year in Robert the Bruce, among the co-stars, playing his wife Elizabeth de Burgh is Mhairi Calvey, who aged just 5 was ‘Young Murron’ in Braveheart. While I enjoyed the film, I thought that maybe the role of The Bruce was maybe better suited to a younger actor, but it was his “baby”, and he strived for years to get the film made.
He also appeared in the TV series Strange Angel, about a rocket scientist in 1940s Los Angeles is secretly the disciple of occultist Aleister Crowley, played by our man. I have yet to see this, but must look it up. The series was canceled after two seasons.
Angus is currently part of the Outlander cast playing a Redcoat Brigadier-General, he has no less than five projects on the burner at the moment, the pic of which, for us Scots is probably a movie called The Last Redemption, which also satrs the popular James Cosmo.

Ken Robbins, Toshi Mashibasa, Serena Tsukino, Nene Yashiro, Kou Minamoto, Hanako how do they react when the reader says he loves them?
S/O says that they love them
Tumblr media
[ SCENARIO ] [ Ken, Toshi, Usagi, Nene, Kou, Hanako ]
[ Kaleido Star ] [ A silent voice ] [ Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon ] [ Jibaku Shounen Hanako-kun ]
Tumblr media
Dear anon I love you because you are the first person who request for jshk ❤️ THANK YOU !! ❤️
Tumblr media
Ken Robbins
Ken is a really caring and gentle person, he is always doing his best in whatever he has to do and even when he isn't exactly the shy type he does get shy when it comes to romance, easily flustered by you since the moment he got a crush on you, he isn't the most open person with his crush but he doesn't hide it, and the people who know him well can easily tell when he is in love
Ken is already easily flustered with you, so whenever you get affectionate with him is the same, it will take him a long time to get used to it and even then he won't really stop getting red cheeks, even if is just words it still flustered him a lot
He may be sure that what he feels for you is love, but he isn't able to say it out loud, let alone to you, saying that you love someone has a lot of weight for him, so hearing from you that you love him is really surprising, even shocking because he didn't really thought on actually happening (or at least not without feeling a little embarrassed)
It take him a moment to fully process what you had said because is too much for him, the blush on his cheeks grows really quickly and when he finally is able to react he is super nervous and trying to stutter an answer, but not even in his mind is able to proper think on one. If you had did it shyly he tries really hard to respond you since he doesn't want for you to think that he doesn't love you too or something, however if you had did it with more confidence that just make him more flustered and a little more difficult to look at you on the eyes
After that he will be pretty blushy for a while whenever he is with you or when he remember what you had say, but after a while he wil be able to calm down about the whole thing (but still keep the memory close to his heart), and he will even tell you properly that he loves you too (even if had been days since you said it, he still want to do it)
Although, if you do it as a way to confess your feelings for him it will be even more shocking for him, is more dificult for him to accept that this is really happening, but will do more effords to be able to answer you, he will hate to don't properly answering you when he is sure that he loves you too
Tumblr media
Toshi Mashibasa
Toshi is pretty carefree and chill, when you two aren't dating yet he isn't too obvious with his crush but still pretty open with his love for you, and once you two are in a relationship he is still pretty open with it, as long as you aren't uncomfortable with it he will be pretty affectionate by words and actions, as well the pda
If you are affectionate yourself he really apreciate it, he always welcome any kind of affection you do to him, even if you aren't too affectionate or even shy he doesn't really mind much, he just loves you for who you are (still he loves at least holding your hand)
Even when Toshi isn't really shy that doesn't mean that saying that you love him is less significant for him, if he didn't had said it already is because he doesn't want to rush or anything, still the moment you tell him that you love him he stares at you for a moment before smiling sweetly
The first time you say it you really surprised him, and flustered him too, still say it back without much troubles, but the next times he respond by putting an arm around your shoulders, holding you close and giving you a little kiss
If you do it shyly he finds it really cute, the first time you say it he doesn't say something about it but the next times is more probably that he will tease you a little about it before saying that he loves you back. In the other hand if you say it with more confidence he is a little more surprised by it the first time, but after a while he gets used to it and, he doesn't say it out loud but he finds it pretty attractive
It doesn't take him long to get used to hearing and saying it, so after a while it would be a pretty common thing saying it, still everytime he hears it or say it he does it from the bottom of his heart, always brings a smile to his face
Although, if you say it as a way to confess your feelings for him Toshi will be more surprised, he is observant and probably already had noticed that you love him back, still doesn't take it for granted, the confesion isn't what surprise, is your choose of words, it suprise and flustere him, like even if he knew it is still unexpected. It doesn't take him long to give you a positive answer with a smile, though
Tumblr media
Usagi Tsukino
Usagi is pretty open with his love for you, even when you two aren't dating yet is pretty obvious for how much she seem to be daydreaming or her insistence and excitment to see you
Whenever you are affectionate to her it make her flustered and sometimes even shy, but she craves for it, she loves you with all her heart and every little detail of love make her melt (and probably keep her flustered for a long time)
Saying that she love you is really special for her, it take her a while to earn the courage to say it to you, but when she heards it from you is even more special, specially the first time you say it, that time it was like time stoped and just the two of you existed on the world. It doesn't matter if you say it shyly or confidently, for her it holds the same feeling of overwhelming and warming love, that feeling that make her keep going in her fight, that feeling that make her dream with a bright future
As special as it is for her, once you two finally say it for the first time she will never be shy again while saying it, the memory of you saying it make her heart melt and she wants to continue feeling so loved, as well as give you that beautiful feeling, so from that day she is saying you that she loves you as a daily basis, if she can she will say it to you at every moment
She can be pretty childish at times so sometimes she does it in a more playful manner or even ask you to please say it to her because she loves hearing it from you, othertimes she do it in a more serious manner or even worringly, she is constantly fighting as the Sailor Scout she is, so she wants to hear and say it as a reasurance and to give her motivation to continue
If you do it as a confesion it would be really surprising for her, she just stare at you for a moment before slowly lowering her gaze, she isn't able to say something just because her cheeks are burning and her heartbeat is so loud that doesn't let her think properly, but she will try really hard to move to be able to show you that she loves you too (maybe with a kiss)
Tumblr media
Nene Yashiro
Yashiro is a complety hopless romantic, she craves for anything romantic with you and daydream a lot about it too, however she as much as she love it she actually gets pretty shy when it comes to romance
Whenever you are affectionate to her Yashiro explode in excited and become a blushing mess, every little detail make her heart melt even before start dating (although, before you two start dating Yashiro was more shy), it would take her a long time to get used to be in a relationship with you
Even when Yashiro swears to herself that she loves you or even going as far as saying that you are the love of her life and there is no one like you, she doesn't have the bravery to say it to you, she will die of embarrasment if you ever get to know all those cheesy things she think of you
The moment you say that you love her is really shocking for her, Yashiro stares at you unable to do anything else while her mind become a completly mess, mixed between all her emotions and thoughts running across her head, wondering if she had heard you right, if you actually mean what you said and even celebrating for what you had said to her
It doesn't matter much if you had say it shyly or confidently because it makes her have pretty much the same reaction (although if you had say it with confidence she finds it incredibly attractive), and it would take her a while to be able to respond to you (but if you feel insecure for her lack of response she will rush herself and end up triping on her words)
Yashiro will be pretty flustered for a while after this, anytime she remember it her cheeks get painted red once again and her heartbeat go faster, as well she gets a little more shy with you for a while, she is just so excited and flustered for the whole situation that can't help herself
If you do it as a way to confess your feelings for her her reaction won't be too different, or at least from the outside because on the inside she is busting and her heartbeat is going so fast that she feels like her heart will go out of her chest, she is sure that she loves you but you saying it to her so suddenly is too much for her
Tumblr media
Kou Minamoto
Kou isn't exactly the most affectionate person in the world, and even when he is really caring towards the people he cares when it comes to being in love and in a relationship he doesn't know much about what to do and he could be a little shy from time to time
He himself isn't much of physical affection, but whenever you are affectionate with him Kou quickly become really flustered, it doesn't matter if is physicaly, by actions or even by words he still gets flustered, and the more you do it the more he blush (he may even start stuttering at some point if you insist with your affection)
It takes a while for Kou to notice and accept his feelings and love is a word with a great meaning so he doesn't want to say it so lightly, so even when he is sure that he loves and care for you it take him a while to even think on saying it. The moment you say it to him it take him a moment to fully process your words, Kou looks at you surprised just before become a blushing mess when he realice what you said
His face is completely red, his heartbeat is racing like crazy and in his mind are running a lot of different thoughts that goes from wondering if you had say it for real to wonder if all of this is just a dream, you can easily read his nervousness all over his face, specially when he tries to answer you but all he can do is stutter half sentences
If you had did it shyly he find it pretty cute but at the same time it make him feel more anxious about having to give you an answer (specially because he doesn't want for you to think that he doesn't love you, because he does), but if you had did it with more confidence he find it kinda intimidating, but in a good way, he would think that is admirable that you talk about your feelings with such confidence if his mind wasn't a mess
Somehow he will manage to give you a proper answer (even if you insist that he doesn't have to) one where he express how much he loves and care for you, how happy he is to be with you and how he will love to be by your side for a long time (still blushing like crazy and probably a little loud for his nervousness)
Although, if you had done it as a love confesion Kou really feels flustered and flattered, he is the same completely mess but this time he will try to stay more calm and serious because, since this is a confesion, he want to give you a proper answer, but it probably will take him a moment to find the right words to do so (not wanting to make it seem like he is making fun of you or being misunderstood)
Tumblr media
Hanako-kun
Hanako is always so flirty and clingy towards his lover, even before start dating he doesn't really hide his love for you and he isn't discreet with it neither, making it pretty obvious
However, when it comes to be serious he finds problems to do so, he doesn't like it too much and he even gets pretty shy while doing it, so as much as he is open with his love he doesn't say it right away (he even has troubles to accept it to himself)
When you are affectionate and show your love for him he could react or really flustered and shy or really excited, depending on what you do/say and the situation too, like if you two were just hanging out he will try to flip it against you and tease you, but if is in a more serious situation (like after fighting a supernatural) he will find troubles to respond
Hanako is already really shy when it come to get serious, so in the moment you say that you love him Hanako look at you really taken aback, he has to take a moment to process what you had said because it really shocked him (and he has to check that he isn't dreaming or that is some kind of joke)
If you had say it shyly and even blushy he gets flustered too, but is easier for him to don't feel so shy, he wants to put his cool facade again but he just can't, not when you look so cute after telling him so sweet words, he will answer really shyly too. However if you had said it with more confidence he is even more shocked, his blush is even more prominent, he feels like busting from inside and out, he is so flustered that he wants to hide (even more if you are looking at him directly), is one of those rare moment where he has no idea what to do or say, just looking everywhere like searching for the answer (if you insist he will be able to correspond but with an indirect answer)
If you do it as a way to confess your feelings for him, it doesn't matter if you do it shyly or confidence, blushing like crazy or just a cute little blush, he is shocked and extremely flustered, is even probably that he ask to repeat yourself or that his mind goes blank because he didn't expected this, but will try to answer even he does it shyly

If you were a Ken, what kind of Ken would you be?
A _________ Ken.
*laughs* Hhmmm. Let’s see.
Well, I know I wouldn’t be a Baskin Robbins Ken. That wouldn’t work out for me.
*laughs harder* You know, what would be really funny is like you know how they did like ummm I forget what but it was like a commercial for anxiety ridden Barbie in the middle of the movie? Or like existential crisis Barbie? I forget, but I’m picturing a commercial for like house-arrest Ken, I mean house-arrest Scott or whatever.
I mean, can you imagine? Bathrobe and pjs and ankle monitor and has messy hair.

“This Ken cries while reading The Fault in Our Stars and sings karaoke. This Ken will rearrange your furniture at least twice a day out of boredom, and this Ken will think of a million things to do because he has ADHD. This Ken will try to sneak into your purse when you leave the house just to get some extra fresh air. This Ken will also freak out when the FBI shows up unannounced.
Comes with loads of emotional baggage and neurodivergency. No adult assembly required. Karaoke machine and other accessories sold separately. Mattel is not responsible for what house-arrest Ken does after being purchased.”

If anybody deserved the title of “Renaissance man” it would be Carl Davis, who has died aged 86 following a brain haemorrhage. A formidably gifted composer and conductor, in a career spanning seven decades he wrote scores for a string of successful films and a long list of some of the best remembered programmes on British television, including the 1995 BBC production of Pride and Prejudice.
Davis won a Bafta and an Ivor Novello award for his score for Karel Reisz’s The French Lieutenant’s Woman (1981), scripted by Harold Pinter and starring the Oscar-nominated Meryl Streep, and worked on many other prominent films, including Scandal (1989), starring Ian McKellen and Joanne Whalley, Ken Russell’s The Rainbow (1989) and The Great Gatsby (2000). His theme music for the 1984 horse-racing drama Champions, starring John Hurt as the Grand National winner Bob Champion, was subsequently used by the BBC for its Grand National coverage.
A fascination for the era of silent movies prompted Davis to create new scores to accompany numerous classics from cinema’s early years, including his composition for Abel Gance’s sprawling 1927 epic, Napoleon. His work helped trigger an international revival of presentations of silent films with a live orchestra.
He achieved another career highlight when he collaborated with Sir Paul McCartney on his Liverpool Oratorio, an eight-movement piece based on McCartney’s experiences of growing up in Liverpool. The piece was recorded in Liverpool Cathedral in 1991, featuring the classical soloists Kiri Te Kanawa and Willard White.
Despite his relentless schedule and prolific output, Davis enjoyed a reputation as an expansive and witty conversationalist who could always make time for friends or interviewers. When conducting at occasions such as the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic’s Summer Pops concerts or the BBC’s Proms in the Park, he would gently subvert notions of classical seriousness by conducting in a union jack outfit or a gold lamé coat.
Born in Brooklyn, New York, Carl was the son of Sara (nee Perlmutter), a teacher, and Isadore Davis, a post office worker. His Jewish family had ancestry in Poland and Russia. Encouraged by his mother, he displayed precocious musical ability. He started playing piano at the age of two, and soon became an adept sight-reader. He recalled how from an early age he would listen to the Metropolitan Opera’s live radio broadcasts on Saturday afternoons, and he would obsessively study musical scores of operas and orchestral pieces obtained from Brooklyn’s public libraries.
He took lessons with the composers Hugo Kauder and Paul Nordoff (later the co-founder of the Nordoff-Robbins music therapy programme), then with the Danish modernist composer Per Nørgård in Copenhagen. He studied at Queens College, New York, and the New England Conservatory of Music, Boston, and as an 18-year-old served as an accompanist to the Robert Shaw Chorale. He then attended Bard College in Annandale-on-Hudson in upstate New York, which has had a remarkable roll-call of actors, writers, film-makers and musicians pass through its portals. He graduated from Bard as a composer, having already begun to compose music for theatrical productions.
In 1958 he became an assistant conductor at the New York City Opera, and then won an off-Broadway Emmy award as co-composer of the 1959 revue Diversions. This was staged at the Edinburgh festival in 1961 and subsequently transferred to the Arts theatre in London, retitled Twists. It caught the eye of Ned Sherrin, then working in production at the BBC. He commissioned Davis, who had moved to London and was living in decrepit lodgings in Notting Hill, to write music for the satirical TV show That Was the Week That Was.
It was the start of his prolific and varied career in the UK. The Davis touch added lustre to the television movies The Snow Goose (BBC, 1971) and The Naked Civil Servant (Thames Television, 1975); the adaptation of the Anita Brookner novel Hotel Du Lac (BBC, 1986); and the miniseries A Year in Provence (BBC, 1993) and A Dance to the Music of Time (Channel 4, 1997) among many others.
A notable milestone was his ominous and unsettling score for Thames’s The World at War (1973), which was produced by Jeremy Isaacs. It was through Isaacs that Davis became involved in the Thames TV series Hollywood: A Celebration of the American Silent Film, based on the book The Parade’s Gone By … by the film historian Kevin Brownlow.
Davis was tasked with tracking down musicians who had worked on films during the silent era, and the series set him off on a decades-long crusade to revive silent films with newly created scores. He enjoyed the challenge of conducting the music live as the film played. “You have to keep going,” he told the Arts Desk’s Graham Rickson in 2021. “Some conductors use click tracks and headphones. I’m old-fashioned and don’t like being tied to machinery – I try to conduct these things with as little apparatus as possible.”
The most dramatic expression of this was his work on Napoleon, and in 1980 Davis conducted a performance of it with an orchestra and audience at the Empire, Leicester Square. “That first screening wasn’t flawless, but it was electrifying,” he recalled. He subsequently conducted performances around the world, and the score let to him being appointed chevalier of France’s Ordre des Arts et des Lettres in 1983.
He went on to compose music for more than 50 silent films featuring stars such as Greta Garbo and Rudolph Valentino, for comedies by Charlie Chaplin, Harold Lloyd and Buster Keaton, and for classics such as Ben-Hur (1925), the Douglas Fairbanks swashbuckler The Thief of Bagdad (1924) and DW Griffith’s Intolerance (1916).
Another genre which Davis excelled at composing for was dance. “The relationship between film and ballet is striking, and I find myself composing more and more ballet scores now, something which the film work has made me much better at,” he told Rickson. For Northern Ballet theatre, he worked with the choreographer Gillian Lynne on A Simple Man (1987) and Lipizzaner (1989). For Scottish Ballet, he collaborated with Robert Cohan, a fellow New Yorker, on A Christmas Carol (1992) and Aladdin (2000). And for English National Ballet’s Alice in Wonderland (1995), Davis (commissioned by ENB’s artistic director Derek Deane) drew on themes by Tchaikovsky.
It was also through Deane’s influence that Davis was commissioned by the National Ballet of Croatia to write Lady of the Camellias (2008), which gave him the opportunity to revisit Alexandre Dumas’s original novel and Verdi’s operatic version of it, La Traviata. The opera had been a favourite of Davis’s since his childhood days of listening to Met broadcasts, and he had also worked on a production of it for New York City Opera. The resulting piece gave the story a contemporary twist, so “the action could flow without pause and indeed the production did effectively utilise projections and film”, as Davis wrote in the recording’s sleeve notes.
He received a Bafta special lifetime achievement award in 2003, and in 2005 he was made CBE.
In 1970 he married the actor Jean Boht, who starred in Carla Lane’s sitcom Bread. She survives him, along with their daughters, Hannah and Jessie.

[008] dancing with myself
japanese uses katakana for loanwords. for historical reasons, the older the loan, the lower the possibily that it comes from english. think dutch traders, portuguese missionaries and prussian scholars. to your average japanese monolingual, this poses no issue whatsoever: they dont have to rely on the word's origin to decipher it. but to us gaijin, interpreting katakana at speed is a skill that has to be developed seperately from other reading competences, such as accumulating kanji. and then there are polyglot assholes like me: "can i have the language of origin please?"
usually medical words are german, artistic words are french, and food words are from where the cuisine originated, but sometimes there's nothing to go on. having to sound it out and cycle through all the possibilities is essentially a very agonising game of one-person-charades to me. sometimes i have several ideas of what it can be, but when i look it up it turns out to be none of them. my most recent encounter with brain-breaking gairaigo was アンケート. thankfully i figured it out when someone said 調査, but what english word that vaguely means questionnaire starts with A? nope! i was so wrong. it's supposed to be enquête. i wonder if it would have clicked right away if it was spelled オンケット instead.
and then there was that one time i went to a gelateria with an all-katakana menu. at least i knew i was looking at italian words for foods, but a lot of the flavours were similar colours, so to work out which was which without holding up the line, i had to do japanese-to-italian-to-flavour in my head at breakneck speed, which is about as close as i will ever get to ken jennings' initials-to-roman-numerals-to-numbers moment on jeopardy. thank god italian and japanese phonetics follow mostly the same rules, otherwise i would have just given up and gone to baskin robbins instead. but maybe there's no way to win, cause baskin robbins is called サーティワンアイスクリーム in japan, which is pronounced (you guessed it!) saatiwan aisukuriimu. 31 ice cream. what was wrong with バスキン ロビンス? did a board room full of pretentious snobs just assume that the average japanese person wouldnt be able to parse the name? sounds real patronizing to me. oh well, looks like i'll just be dancing with myself then, on the floors of tokyo.
