If you love mountains, Japan has more than a hundred of them. But few are as famous as Mt. Fuji. These iconic peaks are just the tip of the iceberg. The country also has 300 other famous mountains, which are referred to as "100 Famous Mountains." You'll find familiar peaks in the Alps and the Maritime Alps among the three hundred. The Akaishi Mountains, which are located in southern Honshu, are a prime example. The region contains numerous peaks on the list, and many are popular hiking and climbing spots. The Chugoku Mountains, located in the Chugoku region of southwestern Honshu, contain 1,760 named peaks, including the highest mountain in Japan, Mount Daisen. The mountain range has many lakes and is the site of numerous festivals, including the World's Highest Snow Mountain Summit.

The Okuchichibu Mountains, in the southernmost island of Hokkaido, feature more than a dozen named peaks. These are mostly volcanic in origin, and contain two distinct volcanic groups. They're a fantastic hiking destination for experienced trekkers, but there are few facilities and many trails. In fact, the mountains are often considered some of the most remote parts of Japan. Mt. Rausu, at 1,660 meters, is the tallest peak in Shiretoko National Park. This park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and is home to some of the country's largest brown bear population. The park is currently undergoing joint management with parts of the Kuril Islands, a group of islands that are claimed by Russia. Despite these conflicts, the mountains are a spectacular backdrop to a holiday in Japan.

One of the most popular cherry blossom spots in Japan is Mt. Buko. The 1,304-meter mountain is a popular tourist destination. In addition to cherry blossoms, visitors can also view the 350-year-old weeping cherry tree at the foot of the Taisanji Temple. The mountain is part of the top 100 of the "100 Famous Mountains in Japan."

Mount Takao is another of Japan's 100 most-visited mountains. This quaternary volcano boasts panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean and the Sea of Okhotsk. To climb the mountain, you must hike through numerous streams and waterfalls. Luckily, the trail is 90% paved, so you can hike it comfortably in sneakers. A hike to the summit of Mount Takao is only two to three hours long.

While many tourists flock to Japan for the beauty of nature, the country also has its fair share of dangerous terrain. The volcanic Mount Aso, Japan's largest active volcano, is situated on the island of Kyushu. As of 2021, it is technically erupting, and has closed many local tourist sites. As an aside, the Japanese Archipelago has a unique geologic history. The islands were once attached to the eastern part of Eurasia.

Bear and Salmon

This Kamchatka Brown Bear (Ursus arctos beringianus) successfully captured a Sockeye Salmon (Oncorhynchus nerka) in Kurile Lake. There is no happier bear than a bear with a fresh salmon in his mouth! The bears at Kurile Lake are in a state of hyperphaghia, meaning they are always hungry. They must gain weight before the winter’s hibernation and catch up to 40 salmons a day to achieve that.

⁣When following  the salmon’s path there is often bears! While painting at Kuril Lake , Kamchatka , our guides ensured our safety as we observed the brown bears ancient annual ritual of fishing for sockeye salmon that are starting to gather and spawn upstream. I was taken in by the earlier light on the IIlyinsky Volcano in the backdrop but was of distracted by a bear, which turned out to be a good model and subject for the foreground! (Additional video

The Tao-Rusyr Caldera is a stratovolcano located on Onekotan Island, in Russia’s Far East. Roughly 7.5 kilometers (4.6 miles) wide, it contains the waters of Kol'tsevoe Lake and a large symmetrical cone, Krenitsyn Peak, which rises from the lake. Onekotan is part of the Kuril Islands, a volcanic archipelago and segment of the “Ring of Fire” — a path of tectonic activity that circles the Pacific Ocean.
