i am reminded, once again, how anachronistic arthurian legend is. and on one hand, i don't mind it because it's just fantasy; there's dragons and beasts and magic and the stories have been told for a millenia, so of course not everything would make sense.

however,

it becomes an issue to me when the maps made for the legends don't fit in the time period pop culture decides to assign the legends in

#i'm looking at you bbc merlin #all i wanted to know is if i could include some regional folklore in a oneshot and now i've come to the realization that bbc had no fucking #clue where shit was in arthurian legend and what exact time period they were loosely sticking with #their map says the kingdom of caerleon was northwest of camelot but that can't be right because that's the kingdom of gwynedd #and camelot is supposed to be in wales (pretty sure like 98% positive this is true bc they were fighting saxons) so where the fuck is #cear leon if its not gwynedd (it can't be gwynedd because there is no record of being called anything else as far as i'm aware)#the closest i can find to cearleon is caer lerion and that's on the east side of britain next to where merica would be (but historically #there would be no more caer lerion by the time mercia is its own kingdom bc anglo saxons invade and that region becomes east anglia #so like...geographically bbc merlin's camelot map makes no fucking sense (don't even get me started and where the fucking sea of mercedoc #and where the isle of mors or mora is)#but yeah i can handle anachronistic costuming and mixing high medieval with early medieval customs but i draw the line at geography #bbc merlin #i just wanted to include more folklore and now i just wanna wrangle this show by the neck #i love the show tho #arthurian legend #arthurian anachronistic woes of a fic writer

NOTABLE HARDRADANS:

DORCAS

The current Chieftain of Hardrada.

Dorcas holds tightly to keeping Hardrada a peaceful island, which has been under the World Government’s rule for over 700 years, despite the internal conflicts. Many people, including her sister Skadi, have had interest in uncovering Hardrada’s history during and prior to the Void Century, so the island is incredibly divided.

She is an intelligent and thoughtful leader, knowing that this role was not what she was originally born for, but tends to be incredibly stubborn. Shanks has attempted to bridge communication given his family’s history but, much like her father, she has little interest in hearing him out. Though she doesn’t agree with everything the WG does, she finds them the safer option compared to the other options and works with them. She also would have supported Cobra and Riku in dissolving the Warlord system.

She has a 16 year old son, Lerion, who has attended the last 3 Reveries with her.

SKADI

Younger sister of Dorcas and member of the RHP. Skadi was originally going to become Hardrada’s Chieftain but she left in her early 20s after Shanks began to appear in the papers as a rookie.

She originally met Shanks when they were children, when the Roger Pirates docked in Hardrada. Her father, Arkyn, the Chieftain at the time, refused to allow Shanks to set foot on the island and Skadi snuck down to the docks to talk with him against her father’s wishes.

Skadi would often butt heads with her sister and parents and, after the departure of the Roger Pirates, began spending her time with a group of rebels that sided against the royal family and their connections with the WG. It was there that she met Sivert, who would go on to become Shanks’ navigator. The group often traveled from the island in search of Hardradans who had left centuries ago to fill in the gaps of their island’s history.

THERE WERE MANY TIMES that he pondered how he managed to form allies with the two brother from the clan of lion shifters. Ozymandias could still remember the vitriol in their gaze whenever he had appeared with one brother being more obvious than the other; however, when he looked back on it that all seemed so distant as if he was looking at the life of another instead of his own. There had been no more glares, no more brewing animosity – all of that had come and gone, replaced, instead, by a sense of respect that he did not think he would have ever gained. Still, none of that mattered right now. His reminiscing could wait until another day, a day that did not involve the potential loss of life for a single mistake. He heard the shout behind him, his eyes quickly snapping in that direction as he saw a foe felled easily by LeRion as if they had been made of papyrus rather than flesh and bone. Had they been close to attacking him on his chariot? Amidst the chaos, it was always hard to tell what was what when bodies and weapons clashed violently, dust kicked up in the air by horses hooves and stamping feet.

Their eyes met for but a moment, a nod their silent greeting before attentions shifted elsewhere. LeRion would not go too far from his side, nor would his brother who fought equally as viciously as he did. Though their forms be men, they were, and would always be at their heart, lions in all their power and majesty. How grateful he was to have them as allies when at one time, he feared that they may be no different from the very foes he cut down now with bow in hand. When someone came too close to TaiZen with blade in hand to attempt to cut down the other, he was quick to ensure they fell to an arrow in the throat, his form relaxed and muscles taunt from the effort it had taken to pull back that string. For a moment, he felt as if Sekhmet herself had helped guide his hand, and in truth, perhaps she had. The Great Lioness knew war as easily as a fisherman may know the river or seas. This was good battle, he told himself quietly, lips curling slightly even as chaos raged around him.

Their victory was already assured.

Tales From Tonka! Again!

Last night, I was starting to explore the crypt under the Lerion estate in AC: Valhalla, and @fountain-of-blue-serenity, (someone who suffers from extreme ophidiophobia but deffo not arachnophobia) said "With all those cobwebs, I hope there aren't any snakes in there!"

A young maid in Bayard’s colours trips over her own feet, and her burden of cushions and blankets get hurled floorward. Merlin - feeling a camaraderie with anyone that clumsy - throws himself next to her immediately and tries to help her. Their hands cross over, grabbing for the same things, tugging them in opposite directions. Merlin isn’t helping at all. “Sorry,” the maid says, “I’m so sorry. I didn’t mean - oh -” “Hey, don’t worry about it,” Merlin says, passing a cushion with too much force and sending her pile of bedding toppling again. “Happens to me all the time. As you can see.” The maid laughs: it seems to catch her by surprise, and she glances up at Merlin, unsure of her own humour. He can’t help but laugh himself, giving her permission to find it all as funny as he does. She has a nice smile, he thinks. Kind. With a quickness that will later have him wondering, Merlin decides he likes her.

Chapter four is here, finally. I've had a bit of a break between the last chapter and this one, but we're back at it again just in time for Yuletide - and here, my special gift for you all:

UTHER Camelot welcomes you, Lord Bayard of Cair Lerion.

Cair Lerion, not Mercia. It's a bit of a petty change, I'll admit: it does nothing to change the story as of yet, if it ever will, and is purely for my own satisfaction. But it ties into my general disdain for the very English trappings of bbc merlin, which should have been Welsh, or at the very least more generally Brythonic.

I mean, Mercia is an Anglian kingdom, so even if I ignore the historical bits - it doesn't much matter when Mercia was founded (6th century) if the show only vaguely picks a time period (??14th???) - we're still left with the same problem that we had with Old English=magic.

No???? The Angles, Saxons and Jutes are the bad guys??? We can't just smack a Anglin kingdom down and declare it an ally of Camelot without doing some on-screen examination of that?

Which, ya know, the show didn't do. And I don't want to do either, tbh, though I'd bet for different reasons, so Mercia has to go. Instead, we get a taste of what was probably happening in Britain in the 5th and 6th centuries in real life: in the wake of the Roman ruling infrastructure collapsing, power would have disolved back to whatever locals were willing to take it. That might have meant wealthy elites, landlords, high-ranked soldiers or veterens - the possibilities are quite endless, and I've not picked one specifically for Bayard. What I have decided about him is that his ancestors were probably Gaels or Franks - Bayard is a very French name - and that he, or the founder of his line, chose an established location to rule over and from.

I think many people probably did, given the evidence we have of continued habitation in so many places. I picked Cair Lerion - Leicester - over others because it has a lovely Welsh name, and because it has more Roman associations over the Anglian associations places like Tamworth or Repton have. It's not too far from Camelot, either, in the version of Albion's geogeraphy I have in my head.

Put a pin in that geography bit - we'll be coming back to it later in the season.

Now, about Merlin and 'Cara'...

She has a nice smile, he thinks. Kind. With a quickness that will later have him wondering, Merlin decides he likes her.

Merlin's magic vibe sense has caught him out once again. There are a few things Merlin and his magic do in this chapter that I don't want to explain lest I spoil something for what's to come, but I did want to say this bit.

He looks. He sees - - through the water, their eyes meet - - she stumbles back from the font, shaken.

Merlin is getting a handle on some very specific parts of his gift, to Nimueh's detriment.

One of my favorite parts of Valhalla is the retelling of King Lear as king Lerion and his witchy pagan daughters~

Such a cool vibe. Honestly Celtic Britain, the Viking age and Roman Britain have such a good vibe for folk horror. Probably why I love Senua’s Sacrifice so much too

Ooh! Good question! And one I have not thought of! XD

So I'll have to go with: she hasn't encountered them yet.

(Because I feel like if she had sensed them, she would have been too tempted to fight them! For the thrill, for curiosity, or for the distraction. And then, if we assume power levels like in the game, wolf-ism or not...I feel like it would be Game Over! XD)

It's definitely something to consider, though. After all, it would be good for her (and Randvi) to explore Endland again...! :D

So the way I've been playing Assassin's Creed Valhalla is pretty fun. Basically I have only done story missions when I have gotten too severely bored of completing territories. I have only just lost Sigurd to Aelfred in terms of story but I have already completed all of Norway and beaten all of the Daughters of Lerion, for example.

#basically the only things i have left in mostly-complete territories is cairns and small bullhead offering altars
