June 2023: Lazy Dogs & Sleepy Bees

I can’t get over The Red Menace’s expression. He looks like the dog that ate all the edibles:

We’ve grown runner beans before but these have been our most successful ones to date. Also, look at how tall the corn is in the background:

I think this is my grainiest backyard garden harvest photo ever:

I wish the leafcutter bee was more in focus but you take what you can get:

I was glad to see this female ruby-throated hummingbird. We’ve seen a few males but this was the first female. She is big & healthy. She has definitely made the trip from Central America to Tennessee more than once. I expect we’ll start seeing more females & juveniles as they start fledging:

My first thought for dog bdubs was "i want to make him a pug - but not a pug pug bc just.. No" I changed my mind countless times until I eventually returned to my original idea of a pug mix - so a Pug/Lhasa Apso mix is what he is!

Today I'm gonna drop some helpful tips about working on an older deaf dog. This might sound funny, but talk to them.

Talk to the deaf dog? Yep! Dogs feed off of your energy! If you're nervous, they're nervous. If you're talking to them and loving on them, they'll definitely know it and be happy campers.

Go slow.

But nobody has time for that.

Lol that's what you think. I did this deaf dog, an out of control puppy, a very large doodle, a chonky old chow mix, and a cat today in 8.5 hours. Schedule your day accordingly if you know you have a special needs animal coming in.

Seriously, slow and steady wins the race with these guys. I was told I would need to muzzle her for nails and front legs. But I didn't need to. First off, she's old, and thereby arthritic. Everything hurts. I went nice and slow to avoid hurting her and to build trust with her. Secondly, she's deaf. She can't hear my movements so she's probably not expecting me to touch certain areas. Again, build that trust. It saves time because they're not getting overly stressed and you're not worrying about getting bit.

Give them breaks. When it seems like a certain thing is starting to be too much for them, take a little break. Move onto something else and then come back to it. If that's the last part of the groom, then just give them a break and pet them and love them and praise them. I promise, doing all of this really pays off.

I love meeting dog people out in the wild. Met these two ladies with their dogs and they asked if they could see Blue. They had their dogs chill out and allowed Blue to come over and sniff and play a bit. She was unsure and a bit nervous but interested and by the end was trying to kiss and play with the other dogs ;o;

#one was a lhasa apso mix and the other was this huge black lab/great dane mix #the dogs were super friendly and chill and the ladies were very nice #we were talking about how socialization has been difficult for dogs since Covid #so they were kind enough to help with Blue for a bit and it was very very sweet #jackal's journal

they were allegedly one of the foundation breeds in developing the polish lowland sheepdog several hundred years ago

i can't find an academic source verifying it but dogs are so alike that breed ancestry testing isn't always reliable either, especially if the mixing happened in the 1500s

#probably the tibetan breed i think about the least tbh #i thought they were the same as lhasa apsos lmao #also going to crufts is such a landlord thing to do

June 2023: Harvest & Lurkers In The Dark

Today’s backyard garden harvest:

This part of the neighborhood had some power out due to recent storms. I could hear the whir of generators. Little did I know that we’d have an encounter in the dark.

The boys & I were almost to the street corner before that furthest light when a Yorkie ran up barking at us. Its owner apologized saying “I don’t have any control over him.” I politely said “that’s okay” while thinking “no shit! You don’t have control... I can hear the sound of the big ass handle of its retractable lease clattering on the sidewalk.” I pulled Silverback & The Red Menace close so they would know I was “the mastiff” & if any aggression was needed, it would be from me. For those that don’t know, Lhasa Apsos were basically the alarm system at Tibetan monasteries for ages. They barked & the Tibetan mastiffs came running but trust me they followed them into the fray.

Considering the situation, the boys were well behaved. We finally got to the corner & the Yorkie broke off engagement once we were past the edge of its yard. Its owner asked if “we were alright.” He meant me & him. I said “we’re cool.” No harm had been done & I didn’t have the heart to tell him that I was more concerned about my dogs doing his dog harm than his doing mine any. I mean, The Red Menace, who is the smaller of the two, has 2 rats, 1 squirrel & 3 birds on his kill list. Doing grievous harm to a Yorkie might have been enough to bump him to second level:
