Some years runner beans are real pos and start climbing everything and anything but the poles they're supposed to and I have to keep correcting them. The fact that this year they took to the poles from the beginning, without any help, is very satisfying.

This heirloom Scarlet Runner should have really pink seeds when I open the pods? We’ll see when they ripen!

June 2023: Harvests & A Forester
Monday’s backyard garden harvest. That is the first cucumber from our volunteer plant. I suspect it is a Marketmore:

I wasn’t completely happy with any of these photos but I was glad to capture these images of this Eight-spotted moth:

I think this volunteer tomato is a Juliet crossed with something else. Juliet fruits are oval so something else figured in to give this fruit its heart shape. If it tastes good, we’ll definitely save seeds:

Surprise last runner beans from the plot. Cooked for a few minutes in boiling water, then sautéed in butter with garlic, mushrooms, lemon juice and cracked black pepper. Meanwhile we cooked up some spaghetti, added a ladle or two of pasta water to the bean mixture, then tipped the pasta into the sauce and stirred through a spoonful of soft cheese and a big handful of grated cheddar, stirring vigorously to bring it all together.

Are we admiring a tropical rainforest plant display or are we looking hungrily at delicious food ready to harvest? In the case of the Runner Bean (Phaseolus coccineus), it’s both! The Runner Bean has a fascinating history that starts in the jungle highlands of what is today southern Mexico and Guatemala. Indigenous Americans domesticated Wild runner beans centuries before the Spanish invasion. There’s even a recorded Nahuatl name “ayocotl” that carried over into the Spanish word for the plant “ayocote”. The runner bean must have a great generic diversity because when it was brought to Europe, surprisingly different types were developed. In Spain 🇪🇸 it is cultivated for white beans for stews, in Greece 🇬🇷 they were bred for huge “elephant beans”, and in the UK 🇬🇧 and Northern Europe as a green veg where the whole immature pod is cooked. In the southern USA some gardeners grow then exclusively for the scarlet flowers which attract hummingbirds.

Going towards the end of this summer season for Scandinavia. It's been growing lovely, way better than I dared hope for, as I started late. Never have I ever managed to get runner beans to these heights! I thought I was optimistic with the height of the branches x'3 as is atm I, uh, cant actually reach the top ^^;;;
(Didn't know whether I was gonna be able to rent a pallet this year or not early enough to pre grow and get starters during spring season, soooo much was sold out once I hit the stores t.t)
