A Canary’s Final Flight

Process notes under the cut! (I struggled a lot so it's a bit of a novel)

So the entire process was a Ride. I knew when I picked this prompt that I was going to have a hard time, because Jimmy’s final death had been illustrated a billion times over by extremely talented artists. But I had a Vision of the snapshot of the second before the impact, when everything is still but you know what’s about happen. It was very much inspired by the clip of Fog by Jabberwocky, bu the thing is, they have the advantage of all the build up of the fall, and that’s when the trouble started.

This was my first version, and obviously it wasn't working. And I was trying so hard, with so many iterations! Small wings, big wings, no wings, different poses, less backgrounds elements. I'd done compositions were everything seemed peaceful but something is Wrong, but it wasn't working this time.

So instead I focused on what rendering I'd like to do - I tried a painterly approach, for that visceral feeling, but it wasn't working either (but hey, I did keep the red sky, so, progress)

At this point I'd been doing back and forths for weeks and I was just as lost as at the start. Now that's my tip for people who make art of any kind, in situations like that, stop thinking about how you can make the best piece possible, and think about you can have fun with it (because when you aren't it's visible). And for that was, 1 - going back to using ink and pen nibs and doing way too detailed inking, and 2- looking at Dave McKean's covers for Sandman (which, funnily enough, was also a reference for my previous trafficzine piece)

And from there I was actually going somewhere! Between the jagged rocks, the red sky, and the increased verticality with the borders, I had hit the vibes I wanted.

I did some experimentation with the border, and even though I really liked the bad boys I drew they were taking too much away from the lonely desolation, so I actually used Red (Unecessary Redstone)'s idea of all of Jimmy's worldy's possessions scattered on the ground post impact, with the idea to make it looks like the central image is his grave being dug.

(and yes for a short amount of time the were supposed to be clock markings on the sun, but there was already enough going with the wings so I scrapped that) (also fun fact the reason why the wings aren't fully material but more ghostly is because my toddler cousin was watching me draw the very first draft and asked why he didn't just use his wings and i went :( so the wings are a metaphor now)

So from there I found a bunch of picture and took some myself, cut and assembled everything together, added shadows in all the appropriate places, and repainted some elements so that everything would look better intergrated (some of the wheats are basically 100% handpainted, the cardboard as well). This took a suprisingly long amount of time, but I was done!

Well I wasn't expecting to have that much to say, but I hope if you're still reading, it was at least interesting!

Alright here, let's say that I'll post these sketches for more character reference.

SUN MAN, though you wouldn't exactly need him for the art since it's nighttime as well

Alright for the descriptions, (SUN AND MOON) as you can see, both of them don't look robotic, no endoskeletons on their limbs can be seen, and they all look fleshy in a way. The eyes have two eyelids (you'll see in the reference channel), a wide grin with a blocky set of teeth, and a red mouth and they also have lips. They also wear slippers instead of shoes, you can see the back of their feet. :)) And honestly bro, you can do anything with em, make em wacky and chaotic, even calm bro?? anything is fine :)) For the Moonman, he's honestly just canon Moon but hella snarky and even more intelligent than in-game, he's like those evil cartoon villains that would snitch on you by order, he also has a silly personality, and he can honestly steal your cheese if you're not careful enough. He's just a night jester with a charming snide personality who can entertain guests in carnivals. He mocks, he jokes, he entertains, hell he'll even laugh at you for tripping over a rock, but dw man he helps you after that.

And this one is nothing, just look at this for entertainment purposes :)) ( Put here just for fun )

He's very awkward when it comes to dates as well

Ayo!!! It's been a while since I've drawn utau (utmv?) stuff in a fully rendered style, so.... when I saw @itsxroxannex had a dtiys I had to shoot my shot!

Actually, I don't think I've ever done a dtyis before 👀 so this was really fun.

I... actually don't think I've ever drawn Passive!NM either tbh. This entire drawing was kinda like a personal challenge to myself, since I often lack w/ backgrounds too.

I did kinda a study on the originals background, because I tend to just draw characters w/o a solid background, and when I do add a background characters usually blend into it a lil too well to discern figures, so the color choices and soft loose lines compared to the hard lines + cell shading felt really nice.

I also decided to go back to Procreate for this one too! Normally I draw w/ Medibang these days, but I learned to draw utau stuff on Procreate and so drawing them elsewhere feels wrong.

And, of course, the last note I'll add in the actual post: my sketch process is trash lmao. Literally I just wing the shapes of clothes and junk based on the vibes and resize as needed. I love looking at the og sketch tho cuz it's so... bald. No under-form, no indicator of limbs, nothing.

WIBTA for refusing to do any more art commissions for my mom's friends?

Ok so I (19nb) am a digital artist. If I had to honestly rate my skills I would put them somewhere in the "good enough to get a few commissions but not professional level" range and I wanted to do it professionally.

Keyword being wanted but I'll get to that

Now my mother has been showing off my art pieces to her friends (no problem with this) and it got one of my mom's friends to ask her if I could draw make icons for the website of her upcoming business back in late April (basically one big icon for the main page and five smaller ones, so six in total, all fully rendered) and paid 200 dollars for all of it (which thinking back was extremely low for the amount of time and effort that I put into that if I was going by living wage effort and time)

So I did that, got the money, spent it all and was happy.

And now yesterday (july 6th) my mom said that she asked one of her other friends (who is also her boss) if I could draw her a new logo for her side business.

SHE DIDNT EVEN ASK ME IF I WANTED TO DO THAT! SHE JUST TOLD HER FRIEND THAT I WOULD DO IT!

Now I got a big commission (dont know how much money Im getting paid) dropped on me with no warning. And apparently my mom and her friend are coming with even MORE ideas for me to draw. (Mind you that commission would take at least a week to two weeks at the MINIMUM and now they're coming up with more)

But the thing is I dont want to to do digital art professionally anymore. I want it to stay as a hobby, something to do for fun and my own enjoyment. The reason why? A one year digital art course I did last year that burnt me out so unbelievably bad. I couldnt make ANY art for myself for an entire YEAR because I was constantly working on that stupid useless course (and I didnt even get the final drawing done and submitted before the one year deadline was up so that didnt help. And it was the one I was the most proud of too)

I am burned out and I want to make things for ME, things that absolutely cant go on a portfolio (extreme horror art, fan art, NSFW art, etc)

The amount of times in the past months I have talked myself out of drawing something that would make me happy because everything I make should be fit to go on a professional portfolio is extremely high.

I'm obviously gonna do the new commission and whatever else those two tell me to draw (but it better be more than 200 dollars, like at least 350 minimum) but I am so tired of this and I just wished my mom had asked me first before automatically telling her friend yes.

So would I be the asshole if I told her Im not doing any future commissions from her friends and that I want to just do art as a hobby and not as a career?

Anyone up for an art trade? I’m a little stumped on how to actually get back into drawing anything, so I thought this would be fun. Plus some art of my characters might help me feel more attached :>

Be warned that I have no idea how I’ll draw your character. It might literally be just a black and white sketch, or a fully rendered piece because I have a tendency to get invested in the most random pieces of art and just go haywire xD

So, I decided to go through with a fanart contest for my AHIT fanfic, 'Sins Of the Fathers'!

I'm not going to pretend that this isn't at least in part because I just want fanart for my fanfic--but honestly? The more I thought about it, given that the story is on hiatus right now, I figured this might be something fun for people to do until I get back to the official fanfic!

And hey, I'm nothing if not a woman of my word, so of course there are going to be prizes for the best drawings.

How long do you usually take to plan for a really long story/comic? Do you do a rough plan or a fully detailed one? Any apps you use for planning?

It depends on the project. For my long-term series, it definitely takes me a good while to finalize everything from start to finish, but as a general rule, I try to keep my writing one step ahead of where I'm drawing, for two purposes: so I can have a goal in mind to propel the comic forward (I don't want to be writing or drawing on the fly more than I have to), and so I can have enough planned ahead for editing, because by the time I get to the thing I've planned, my writing has likely grown more and my perspective on it has shifted, so I'm not releasing "first takes", so to speak.

Usually I use LibreOffice and just sort of keep a few separate files for different purposes. I always have a "[story] shit" file of some kind where I just dump thoughts and notes that I don't wanna lose lmao but then I usually also have a file that's meant for outlining. I think Rekindled is the first comic where I haven't employed my spreadsheet method, which is when I'd use Excel/Spreadsheets to lay out panel descriptions and dialogue. So like this:

Rekindled is more just note-taking, what I want to happen in each episode, and if there's any dialogue I come up with that I definitely want to include, I write it down in there. I've done all of Rekindled's process through Scrivener, which I learned how to use shortly before starting it. IDK yet if I like Scrivener enough to use it for my bigger projects, but it's been helpful for organization and keeping my files all in one central "hub" area.

So right now I have up to about Episode 70 drafted out like that ^^^ but things do change during the actual production of the episodes. Sometimes I'll write something in my notes that doesn't flow well in actual comic form. Sometimes I'll write dialogue during the sketching stage that I don't like anymore by the time I get to the final rendering. It's all a stage-by-stage process from drafting to final release.

The question of "how long" really just comes down to the note-taking process. I tend to work in bursts, the last time I did any written episode layouts was a few weeks ago and that was because I got like, 40+ episodes done in a day LOL So I'm all set for the next little bit, but I'll have to get back to planning by Episode 50 if I haven't done any before then. I'd like to have the entirety of Rekindled plotted out by the end of the year so I can get a more exact answer of how long Rekindled will be :' )

When it comes to software/apps, keep it simple, use what you know. I've been using standard word editors and spreadsheets for years now because it works for me. Scrivener's been fun to learn but as I mentioned, IDK if I'm gonna be able to stick with it for bigger projects like Time Gate because it feels like I'm wearing different shoes that I'm not used to lol But that's just me, feeling "at home" with my software is just an important thing to me, for others it might not matter so much. Scrivener definitely has the most features for drafting/writing/editing, but it's also not very beginner-friendly and there's a huge learning curve to really understanding how the software is designed and what it fully offers.

There's also Plottr which I've been using for [AFTERBIRTH], it's really helpful for people who need visual aids because it allows you to lay out story timelines through imagery. But I really only use it for laying out story beats from end to end, I don't use it much beyond that, any extensive note taking or scripting happens in actual word documents.

(idk if this is how you're actually supposed to use Plottr but it's how I use it so w/e lolol)

Ultimately it's all up to you, what works for me might not work for others so don't be afraid to try things even if it ends up not working out for you. Obv that might be a bit more of a "nah" when it comes to paid software like Scrivener and Plottr, but there are loads of tutorials on Youtube that teach you how to use the software that you can hopefully use as a glimpse into how they work to see if they'd be up your alley before paying money for 'em.

speculating what the s8 islanders will look like as an excuse to draw lol idk why im not going in order here's the sports physiologist

ok so obviously my art style is a bit simpler than the game's and I didn't take a ton of time to render it but I think the elements are there and here's my reasoning (warning this is long lol)

the disclaimer is I read the application once and then started drawing so I think in my head I got it confused and thought this was gonna be the Bobby/Rafael cutesy fun guy of the season and rereading it now I realize I am wrong, but I still stand by certain choices.

Sports physio/cycling thing was a big thing for this. I think he shouldn't have very defined abs but the game will draw him like that. Cyclers tend to have skinnier torsos but bigger thighs/legs and I didn't draw the legs bc I'm lazy but know that in my head, he's got thick thighs. I didn't draw him with like a huge chest or arms also because of that, but because it's still LITG, he does have some definition on his arms, just not a lot. I really think I could see this guy working in sports physio.

And because he takes care of people for a living and is the "big romantic," I think he needs to look very charming, to a point where he's almost disarming. (This is where I got it in my head that he's the Bobby/Raf of the group bc lover boy vibes. Personality wise he feels like Rohan imo who is similar). Therefore I drew a lot of his features as very soft (softer jawline, fleshier nose) but also just big round eyes to draw you in. I looked at Tyrique from love island season 10 for a bit of inspo because I think he's got such a pretty face but still is pretty masculine, and he has big round eyes so that's why I did that.

I also decided on curly hair, in part because of my confusion with Bobby/Rafael, but also I think it adds to the charm because it's clearly styled but tries to look effortless. I used a younger picture of Dev Patel for it. That's also why he has a little bit of facial hair to help age him up but also works with the aesthetic I was going for. The piercings are fully a self indulgent add-in, I just it's attractive.

Ok so this is where it gets confusing because I did intially draw some sharper features on him and had a different color palette for his skin and hair. I was imagining him as "spicy white" just because Bobby and Raf are mixed so they would change it up just slightly for this guy. I think nothing that's too contrasting to make him look brooding like Joyo. So initially this was definitively a tanned white guy with curly reddish brown hair, some facial hair, and a defined nose, and then I was like this is really close to Rocco. So I changed some features and some colors and here we are now at ethnically ambiguous? I'm not gonna think too hard about the ethnicity of this character because this is fake and it's fusebox's problem when they release the real character.

Looking back, if I redrew the character, I'd go for full or half South Asian just because I did use dev patel as a hair reference. But also maybe just hopeful because aside from Angie, the other South Asian rep in recent memory I can think of is Marshall (messy), Ozzy (messier), and Suresh (messiest), so I just think we should get a cute one. (also Priya, Rohan, and Arjun who aren't nearly as bad but only one of those is a LI and they're sort of dead right now so)

anyway overall the process of drawing him was kind of a mess because I had confused some things in my head and like I said, was accidentally drawing Rocco (underrated design btw) but this was the first one I did and I don't think I'm right, this is just a fun little activity for me and he's the first one I drew so I wasn't very sure about a lot of things.

so if you read this far congrats for getting though my ramblings. The next ones I'm doing aren't nearly as complicated 😂😂

good lord.....this took. So. Long. the file says 13 hours and I don't even know how I spent so much time on this but I LOVE HOW IT TURNED OUT SOOOOO MUCH.

the outfit was a pain in the ass to find the right colors for but once I got past that the rest was very fun

everything about this drawing was fun for me (even the hands and bg which is a shocker I know)

but hey! first actually finished piece of the year! I think, personally, this is a great way to start off my art for the year (my doodles count but not as fully rendered finished things like this)

I might end up drawing this outfit on the other members if I feel like it, maybe just in doodles though, but I still really like how it looks imo, took inspiration from the og alk uniform, the vermillion fits and the artistic partisan fits for this one! wanted to make it more blue to contrast his hair and I think it turned out nice (⁠≧⁠▽⁠≦⁠)(⁠≧⁠▽⁠≦⁠)

Sooo, I haven't been posting much. I can't say I'm sorry for it since I have the tendency to disappear. Although what I can say is that I've just been drawing on paper hence why I'm not posting.

I don't actually know if I should post my trad drawings, especially the sketches. I guess it wouldn't really matter much? I'm not sure.

Decision-making is hard...

Anyways, back to the topic of this art. It's obvious how much I like drawing Taufan/Beliung. Halitau is also my favourite duo, therefore! I drew Halitau! It was very fun! Actually, it was unexpected too since I didn't plan to fully render this. This drawing here was just a small part of a big doodle canvas, but it turned out great! I'm satisfied.

Yes, I draw on ibispaint. I drawing using my thumb which is why I'm not used to sketching on digital, but even drawing with stylus feels weird to me.

I've done some modifications, though, honestly, It was just meant to be a little doodle so I'm pleasantly surprised how well it turned out!

art ask game: do you have a favorite color palette, have you done a lot of collabs, and whats your creative process?

Oooh fun fun

Some of my favourite colour palletes are ones that have warm tones or high contrast!! I love the palletes that are kind of like a neon sign too, ykwim? Black background with slowly growing colours to a fully saturated end product- THEY ALWAYS LOOK SO EDIBLE... I can never accurately pull it off though

I've done a few of collabs! Not a lot, but the main one I remember doing was a few years ago, a small group of people including me in a discord server decided to design a demon! I think I got the colouring stage? It was fun! Otherwise it was kinda like those "draw the gang" type collabs, nothing too serious/fully rendered

hmmmm my creative process...? I guess I can chat a little about how I figure out the designs for the P! Gang! (This'll be a long part so I'll put it under the cut!)

The first thing I do, almost always, is figure out the vibe of the character

I then correlate the vibe to an animal that gives the same vibe (Aka skate and a golden retriever)

If theres a theme or aesthetic the character goes along with I'll usually grab references from the web and perhaps doodle some ideas down (like I'll do with vinestaff and japanese kimonos)

If there's technology involved, expect me to have come across some cool tech that happened in real life before, and to see me add that into the design (like rocket's prosthetics/hyperlaser's helmet)

if I'm having a really tough time figuring out how to make a character look decent, I'll usually take a few minutes before I go to bed to sketch out some ideas- I did this for Boombox's jelly limbs and Slingshot

Afterwards I usually start drawing! Finding out a pose at first is a tough one, considering it has to show off the character while presenting the design as well- if their arm or something is hiding their chest, there's probably not a lot going on there/it's already shown somewhere else

The lines were a tough part to the process before I figured out the sizes I was gonna use- 3px for the main details, 2px for the inbetween, and 1px for the tiny details. (This is why I'm gonna go back to Subspace- his lines are totally out of whack compared to the rest of the gang!!)

My colouring process is hard to explain because I tend to just- do it. But I can try! Usually I start by placing out the flat colours and rendering it out one layer at a time. I try to get the colours down, they don't have to be perfect cause I'll end up tweaking them later. I render one colour at a time, (they're usually the same material,) and just go through that during the whole process! Depending on the material I also choose a lighting angle

After the colour I go in and edit them with overlays, colour the lines occasionally, and that's it!

Pop on the signature across the design, post it on the discord servers, tumblr, etc

After I post it I usually take a small hiatus from drawing to think and regain some inspiration, reblogging a bunch of stuff and then starting the process again!

I take my time with things like this, so itll be unlikely for me to post two at a time! Scythe and Ban were a special case because I forgot to put her into the poll and ban was the next guy I was gonna draw! (I personally can also see the effects of this on Scythes design cause I drew her second- I'm not as satisfied with her as I could be, which is why I'm also redoing her.)

What is your process when doing fully rendered art! I've always loved looking at how detailed they are

I can show you with a couple screenshots of a current wip

1. I start out with a super rough sketch. For people it's a basic skeletal sketch of where what body part goes. For background sketches it's just vague shapes in the places where I'd like them to be.

2. Clean up time baby!! That's the stage where my vague shapes turn into full shapes. It's also the stage where I settle on details.

This is what a clean sketch looks like. Mind you not every detail I sketch is something I do in lineart, some things are just colors

3. Lineart woo-hoo!

This is what finished lineart looks like for me. What I also do is paint in shadows on my lineart layer for more depth and to give myself visual clarity too

4. Colors. For big pieces like this one right here I already color code the setting, give the whole thing a vibe

See this? No shading, that's all just coloring. Coding the colors this way minimizes the amount of layers I need to shade plus I tend to work on max. 3 color layers anyway. What I do for big pieces like this is color normally, then adjust the value and all that with a separate layer and merge everything. The minimum layer approach is something I picked up on when I was using ibis paint x on my phone in 2014 I think? Back then I had 3 layers to work with and I made that count and I guess that never left

5. ~shading~✨️ aka my favorite part aka the part where everything comes together. The shading really depends on the vibe and thing I'm drawing. Some shading is complex and some shading is simple. It's definitely the most fun part

6. Detailing. That's what I do afterwards stuff like rim lighting or texturing! Tho texturing is something new im trying. I'm kind of sick of my art looking flat sooo I use a variety of brushes to help with that. Genuinely think it looks good, makes my stuff look more alive

7. Sign it. I cannot stress this enough. SIGN YOUR WORKS!!! WHATEVER IT IS, SIGN IT!! I put my signature in places it's difficult to remove because you never ever know if some bloke wants to steal or not. Protect your creative property and sign it, watermark it. Make sure that people know it's yours and yours only

Wow that got long I'm sorry! But that's basically my process from start to finish, wait I forgot the collapse after I'm done oh well not that important hahaha

TFP MUSIC INSPIRED PAINTING PROJECT (Wowie!!)

Hey gamers, remember this and this art piece from a while back? (the latter of which just turned a year old)

WELL.

I had the idea of hosting a duo of polls to select the next music inspired illustration as a fun little project! The first being to select the song itself, and the second to select the character who will be the focus. (Unfortunately, the character selection is somewhat limited; I’ve only included designs I already know how to draw, as trying to learn how to draw and PAINT a character I’ve never drawn before will be a lot more challenging.) These will be fully rendered full body illustrations like the two up above.

The goal of this project is to try creating something that captures the sort of “vibe” of the music it’s based on, while attempting to also utilize the album artwork (or music video) as an art style influence. (Examples provided down below!) I’ve selected five different songs as choices for this, each of which being pretty different from the last. In varying degrees. Fair warning before I get into what the songs are! They… might not be the most conventional options? And they might also not fit all of the character choices well, like some will fit certain songs better than others in my opinion.

Anyways, let’s begin!

Down below, I’ve made info cards for each song containing information such as: Album artwork, name, artist, genres, what sort of feel I get from the music (which could be subjective), some lyrics I particularly like either from just what they say or what that part of the song sounds like. Sometimes both! Each of which also has an example of what the piece might look like in the form of this lopsided Soundwave sketch I used as a base. He’s not an option in the character poll because homeboy was literally the subject matter of THREE of the five music pieces I’ve done- with those three being the only rendered ones. 💀 So he’s just gonna chill here as a set of art examples.

Annnnnd it looks like it got compressed as I type this. ANYWAYS.

The general rules I’ll be going off of while working on these are basically as follows:

Color scheme must be similar in some way to the base song’s album art or music video.

Art style should have at least a few influences from the aforementioned references.

The piece should have a similar “feel” to its source material.

The song should at least make s o m e sense for the character who will be drawn for it. At LEAST a section of lyrics.

I almost added a sixth song, but I had already been working on those slides for seven hours at that point and I was too excited about sharing it 💀

GK Studies

So right after I studied Meta Knight last month, I felt confident enough to try an even bigger challenge and study Galacta Knight...and was quickly reminded why I never tried it before. owo;;;

Gal is pretty evil in terms of character design, I think. He’s got those horns, his color scheme looks kind of awkward when it’s not rendered just right, the eye-gap in his mask is such a difficult shape to work with...pretty much everything about him feels purposely crafted to make the average artist rage-quit at some point. ^^;

Nevertheless, I persisted, and here he is!

[1] I decided to make a few alterations to his design right away, like the details on his shoulder pauldrons. And after some deliberation, I decided to keep the bugged-out eyes from my gijinka depiction of him. They’re kind of necessary to portray the more innocent personality I write him with, which I’ll explain in a bit.

[2] IT’S ULTRA KNIGHT ...Learning his German name was a formative experience for me, yes indeed. ^^

[3] So for a while I’ve conceptualized Galacta Knight as basically the one character in the Kirby-verse who actually faced consequences for being a destructive goofball. ^^;;; He’s just like everyone else in the cast; he likes to have fun and break things and beat people up, but (a) he’s also a couple orders of magnitude stronger than the rest of the cast, and (b) I guess back when he was originally born, people didn’t want to put up with that. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

So, after a couple eons of being locked up/treated like a living weapon, he’s developed some...issues. The rage and pain and bloodthirst (that other artists actually focus on ^^;) is all in there, but at the end of the day he’s just a lonely guy who wants to be included. And if you can appeal to that side of him-- and survive all the other sides of him-- he’s actually fairly easy to befriend and reason with.

[4] ...It was at this point that I realized I was mostly doing these drawings to play around with GK’s wings. ^^ That definitely made this study a lot more enjoyable though; if you ignore all the myriad difficulties in his design he’s basically just ‘winged orb’, and who doesn’t love those?? :D

[5] Fallen Angel~ I tried out a little iridescent coloring on his wings here...and now I think someday I might try to fully render it out on a real piece of artwork, because just judging by this he’d probably look fantastic~

[6] *Imagines how soft and luxurious a GK down pillow would feel*

...Unfortunately, he only has like 30 feathers total at any given time, so it’d probably take a long time to make one, wouldn’t it? ^^;

Recently I reached 100 followers on Wattpad, and I’m very happy because I never expected to reach three digits on any social media platform!

I feel like this calls for something special in order to celebrate, so I would like to officially announce that I’m hosting a DTIYS (Do This In Your Style) on both platforms!

Rules: Draw one or more of your favorite designs from my Beyblade God AU. They can either be in static positions, interacting with other gods, or indulging themselves in their respective heavenly roles. For references, go back through the #god universe tag on my blog.

There will be 3 winners, and the prizes will be distributed thusly:
