#literally the lore of this game is so dark like legit

yeah so uh, Shadow Joker eh?
this whole thing started with me thinking about a PhantomThief!Mishima, and then i started drawing stuff based off this one fic i read and then we got to here. oh well
i might turn this into a comic maybe??? depends on how hard finals slaughter me, but I’ll cross that bridge when i get to it
also here’s the lore on this guy cuz i legit spent too much mental energy scraping through the wiki figuring out how shadows and personas work and then coming up with a way it could work for joker
Basically, since someone’s shadow is a manifestation of their distorted desires, then a Shadow Joker, would be the manifestation of the protagonist’s (I’m gonna call him Ren from here on. cool? cool) distorted desires. What might those be? Well, during his awakening, Arsene notes Ren’s strong desire to help people and makes him think about whether the resolve he’s shown in the past was valid or not. This becomes the basis of the rebellious will that allows him to forge a contract with Arsene. But now with Shadow Joker, that desire to help people has been distorted into a kind of mix of hero and savior complex. So instead of just helping people in need, on some subconscious level he has started to see himself as the only one that can help and save people.
In personality he’s about the same as regular Joker. But that’s only at first glance. He’s much more unpredictable and dangerous, basically taking the whole “wildcard” thing very literally. I’d also like to think that all of Joker’s theatrics become even more emphasized with Shadow Joker.
For his palace I was thinking of him seeing the whole of Tokyo as his stage, wherein he’s an actor in a play of which he is the hero. For this I was kinda looking to the “The show’s over” on his all out attack screen, as well as hero = play, play = theatre, theatre = stage, and all that jazz. I’m still not exactly sure on how it’d look; maybe just the city as it is at night with open stages everywhere, spotlights floating through the dark nigh sky both as aesthetic as well as acting as traps for the thieves to avoid, so if you step into one of them the security level goes up. Or maybe each area that they go through would be like a different part of a theatre, so the treasure room would be Shadow Joker’s changing room and the final confrontation would be on a grand stage, idk. One thing is though, I think that his Palace Tokyo would feel really empty. Like there’d be people, but they’ll be more like faceless ghosts kinda milling about, so not at all like the ATM-guys or robots in Kaneshira and Okumura’s palaces. Also probably no cognitive versions of the other thieves or anyone else he knows, as I was thinking that Shadow Joker would be going by an “I don’t need anyone but myself” idea, and since he’s the all-powerful hero he doesn’t need “sidekicks”.
His treasure is his Phantom Thieves mask, as that would be the source of his distorted desire to help, cuz it’s the thing that represents him getting his persona and being able to help people on a larger scale in the first place.
When the other thieves first enter the palace, they won’t be in their thief outfits, as i think Shadow Joker’s desire to help would still outweigh him seeing them as a threat -- plus they’re people he knows. He’d talk and interact with them like regular Joker would, but maybe a bit more openly and with more theatrics, so the other thieves will have some trouble with thinking of him as a legit threat and not just their pal who’s a bit too quirked up. But when Shadow Joker realizes that they’re here to steal his mask, the switch flips completely, and the others have to really scramble to get out with their lives.
Then follows the general infiltration thing and blah blah blah. For the infiltration I thought it’d be neat if they go through all the different districts (that are walkable in-game) and the safe-rooms would be the areas where confidants hang out -- The Untouchable in Shibuya, Crossroads Bar in Shinjuku, Gigolo Arcade in Akihabara, Takemi Medical Clinic in Yongen-Jaya, etc.
There might also be a progression reason for which the gang will have to go into Shinjuku Academy, wherein the safe-rooms would be Ren’s classroom and the roof. Maybe there’s something in the school that they need to clear before they can progress through Aoyama-Itchome and go to Shibuya, idk.
The treasure room would be in the Leblanc attic (because ofc).
For the boss battle, when the other thieves try to steal his treasure but get caught on the way out (cuz that’s what always happens to these fools), Shadow Joker takes the mask from them and actually uses it in the battle, which allows him to switch between a number of different personas as a mechanic. Their levels and attack would be comparatively lower that the thieves’, but the sheer number of skills at his disposal as well as his unpredictability would be trouble enough.
there might also be a phase two, where he rips off the mask he’s wearing and replaces it with his original phantom thieves one, and ends up transforming into a fusion of himself and Arsene, so now he’d be technically using only one persona, but with higher stats
(also i was entertaining the thought of this being the general theme of the palace and this being the theme of the final confrontation. i feel like the first one’s just kinda eerie enough to suit prowling through your friend’s subconscious)
and then pertaining to the design itself, i was basing it off of the regular Joker outfit but spiced up with more flamboyance, because to Ren, Joker would be like the epitome of him feeling like a hero. I kept the mask on to also keep that Joker vibe going, however i made it a more extravagant variation on the original, to kinda push the theatre vibe. I also gave him a cape -- i think that one’s self-explanatory. The walking stick is to give him even more flair, but also uh, concealed weapons is like the perfect Shadow Joker thing to do. Basically think of Lucious Malfoy’s wand-walking stick but with a dagger instead of a wand.
anyway I want it to be clear for the record that I have never once looked up the shadow joker tag on here before i started drawing this but i’m glad we all share the same braincell when it comes to his outfit, fellas
(also holy FUCK @waifujuju‘s Shadow Joker design is so fucking clever, i am in awe)
that PhantomThief!Mishima thing is still in the works by the way, though i’ve hit a roadblock trying to come up with a persona for him. So far i’ve been thinking of something along the lines of Merlin but idk, it doesn’t seem rebellious enough so the only thing that fits is the vibes, and even that’s a maybe. this whole process has also been exacerbated by the fact that i’ve got a really cool costume going for him that involves a bolt-action rifle which i am very fond of and very reluctant to let go off. all this to say, if you’ve got any ideas please shoot me a message or write a comment cuz rn my brain is kinda frying itself trying to think through this. ty

about ur post on teenage girls liking leon just because he’s pretty and not getting into re lore etc. :
i was one of them! ok granted i was like 17 lol but i found re last year and while i was only interested at first because of obv (blond) reasons 😭, it was my gateway to the re lore / fandom and i’ve met so many cool people because of it.
it’s nosy + stupid to police others’ reasons for liking media like i dont understand how that affects anybody except the person consuming said media?? honestly a waste of time. and like u said, they’re literally just making tiktok edits and stuff, it’s not like they’re going on crusades to defend leon’s honor and committing violence or something. being gatekeepy makes people want to get into re even less.
it is not that deep. let people have crushes! touch grass! idk why im so strongly opinionated about this lol but i totes agree w/ u ❤️
~ 📅
I just think that if you’re going to call out hypermasculinity or whatever maybe. call out like grown men who make leon sigma edits and redfield bloodline asian fetish leon jokes instead of little girls who find a man sexy.. like sorry but re4 he’s saving a cute girl in similar age to me and he’s hot? why wouldn’t I like him
I think cuz! idk. ofc I hate when people from tiktok and twitter move to here and start hating on dark content but… that’s something completely different? idk it just is so sad like can girls not enjoy anything! leon is not some mysterious hidden character he’s legit. LEON KENNEDY . lol . he’s one of the most popular video game characters ever and he’s always.. been hot ? he’s always been a sex icon to me anyway LMFAO

I had to make this before I slept
explanations under the cut
Literally the most compelling character in anything ever: all three of these windy boys have open ended stories and so many possibilities and it's like!! I want to see their story!! I want to see more!! Let me know!!
their character arc is p much been complete: Nahida's archon quest is legit one of the few times where after I played it, I felt I had a full understanding of her as a character and deity. Through the media we were given about her, we understand her story, her sorrow, and her determination to watch over Sumeru and be the archon they deserve.
Kazuha is just. So chill and cool. He was already really good as a character with the right amount of edge and enchantment but then the second golden apple archipelago?? how he was anxious about his family's decline? A look back at Kazuha at a different moment in his life?? we saw how he came to be the person he is today and that was dope as hell.
I love you deeply and you need more focus: Collei's full backstory hasn't been touched on much in the actual game. We don't need a whole recap of the webtoon but like. More than just a single conversation, ya know? Explore more about how she struggles with certain things due to her trauma. I also like to imagine that while her eleazar is cured, it still left her with some physical disabilities. Like, generally low stamina or a weaker immune system.
Albedo will just show up once a year and be like "yeah I'm a homunculus and also have an evil twin now and if I ever lose myself to the darkness can you kill me thanks buddy" LIKE!! I'M SORRY CAN YOU EXPAND A BIT MORE???? The connection with Durin pls??? ANYTHING??? WHERE'S SUBJECT 2???? AAAA?????
GIVE ME LORE GDI: Kaeya.............being from Khaenri'ah......will it ever be relevant in the main game......?? please I want to know ALSO can we see Diluc and Kaeya together more because even though in the letters from that one event it seems there's no bad blood between them it's still like?? come on let's see them as brothers. Diluc getting kaeya to stay for Adaline to cook for him tho. that was good. come on. resolve your trauma boys.
Same with Diluc like. Dude went on a one man man-hunt against the entire fatui. he is literally batman. i want to know more. can we see more plz??? with Lisa she is literally one of the strongest people alive and she's seen how the pursuit of knowledge drives people mad which is why she's just a librarian now. i want to know more about her because the KNOWLEDGE she probably has. heck man.
Tartaglia fell into the abyss when he was a child??? and that fucked him up completely and utterly??? he's also the only character with no light in his eyes which is??? PRETTY DAMN UNSUBTLE LIKE WOW
EVERYTHING ABOUT THE TRAVELER I HAVE SO MANY QUESTIONS WHO ARE YOU PEOPLE
the potential....she is there...: Cyno literally has an actual spirit within him??? he just casually mentions that like excuse me you have a what now??? this man a walking yugioh reference jfc. Faruzen is legit from 100 years ago after having been locked in stasis and trapped in a tomb where she basically lost her mind. that's fucking harrowing.
Ganyu being half adeptus and having fought in the archon war like damn. I wanna know more. Yanfei is neat and I wanna know more about her adeptus dad. Zhongli has layers certainly but I would like his own personal emotions to be focused instead of just implied.
Qiqi is literally a zombie after dying thousands of years ago and I would like the story to awknowledge that. Razor is just tarzan with wolves and Bennett was abandoned on a mountain as a baby these are so interesting stories and we should??? learn more plz???
you don't need tragic backstory to be my beloved: my favs :3
just a guy: they're people alright
cool story but not personally into it: Shenhe's story is really beautiful and her struggle to adapt living with people is neat but I feel like it just sorta. came and went. like. her fighting against osial's wife was supposed to be her moment but it was just sorta. eh.
I Do Not Care About Eula Or Miko.
Ei!! I love her!! But wow the main archon quest didn't do her justice!! Her two personal quests were cool, and I liked seeing Ei open up and such but like. It was not very well handled also I still don't get why she made a whole ass puppet with a mind of it's own but whatever I guess.
Rosaria has cool bandit background. But also. eh. Jean's legacy is cool but I don't personally connect with it. Noelle is neat but she's just sorta there. Heizou is fun and I do like him but I'm not quite gripped with his dead friend story as I am with the other anemo pretty boys.

Everyone who complained about Lightfall's story how you feeling now?
Looking pretty fucking good next to this fucking train wreck of a seasonal story huh?
This is legit the first time in a while where I've been completely disinterested and detatched from the story and characters. Like I'm not sad or upset about Amanda even a little bit. Even if they hadn't made her a huge bitch this season for like... no reason I wouldn't have been that sad. I'm just sad because all the characters I do care about are sad Amanda's dead. But jfc what a nothing fucking death and feels so tone deaf.
Like we just suffered massive casualties to the Witness and then the Shadow Legion are taking and attacking people. We're in the middle of a full blown war and its suddenly grinding to a halt over a named Lightless woman??? Like people die. Not to mention WE DID ALL THE WORK! The YW always does all the work and the only person who mentions it is Mara. Amanda went into an active war zone where we fight against the great forces of darkness and this time the Guardian couldn't save her. Because they aren't doing rescue missions without a Guardian around.
It's just
such a choice
Lightfall was good.
This is a fucking train wreck of a story. And not even a good one. I can't wait to look away.
And they better not deus ex machina her alive with a Ghost otherwise all this grieving and character growing will have been for literally nothing. It will literally just be for some shock factor and Destiny is WAY better than being a game built for fucking shock factor (even tho it wasn't shocking. Amanda was throwing dead lady flags all season).
Best part of the season was, can't believe I'm saying this, Mara. OH! Oh we love some good good character growth where she's been begrudgingly eating that humble as she realizes she can't manipulate her way out of this and has to be an actual human being. Love that for her. She's still a huge bitch but that's good. I'm glad. She can be both.
Worst part is absolutely Amanda. Like she was never that interesting of a character to me anyway and this season has not changed my mind. She's just... a boring generic white lady self insert. Now self inserts aren't bad. But if you're boring? Then what's the point of you? If you're a boring self insert OC made by some fandom person that's whatever, not here to yuck your yum. But a boring self insert canon character???
Also Amanda had more chemistry with Niiks the Eliksni in lore entries than she evvvvver did with Crow like Bungie is trying to convince us they had. Look me in the eye and tell me Amanda wasn't wlw.

Bendy and the dark revival part 3
Thonks and notes.
.
She was the fourth
👀
Something tells me this is about Audery? But... The fourth of what?
Better not be the fourth closet...
Listens to Jane Todd tape
So the fourth is Carly, a ghost girl Jane wants to join the Butcher gang.
That was rejected.
... Hmmm
.
So Nathan Arch, aka guy from Archgate productions bought the rights to Joey's characters.
He talks about Joey as an old friend but idk if its just cos of fnaf and Henry addressing William the same way.
But something doesn't seem right bout this.
.
Porter is interesting, I mean there's very few people nice down here.
I like how he just goes nope your name is Bobby now.
.. And he has ink magic 2.
Sure okay than.
I like him.
.
The power belongs to him
Apparently not just him.
.
Game needs to stop taunting me with Boris...
Boris plushi in the ink.
Boris cardboard cut out which is also bizarre cos it's usually bendy ones.
In the words of Susie Campbell's Alice Angel from the first game
"Give me back my Boris!"
.
Ohhh chain door.
This should be good.
They crawl
Okay than and there's a dead lost one? On the floor surrounded by ink.
And the ink demon is back.
Fun.
The deep abyss remembers you, Audery.
If the abyss is Wilson... Than tell him we're not here.
A child of the darkness.
Hmm that's werid cos everyone else is referred to as a child of the machine.
Just more and more hints that Audery is different to the others.
And remembers?
Has Audery been here before I wonder.
I mean Henry was stuck in a time loop so... Who knows.
.
Wandering ebat the difference between lost ones and searchers are... Other than one having legs and feet.
.
Your journey will end as you are consumed into my dark kingdom.
That's just late stage capitalism man, was already there in while working in a dark semi abandoned animation studio
Here you will find meaning in your pain.
That's what we call a paycheck.
And I doubt your giving one out.
Also.. Ink demon needs to clear his throat once in a while.
.
People saying I should watch Superhorrorbros videos on this rather than Mark's playthrough for lore.
And I will but it's nice seeing stuff for myself and making ideas and having thonks and than seeing it from someone else.
That and than I don't get to see Mark aggressively "wallopolise" lost ones with the wrench while screaming and cursing them with eternal damnation.
.
The sweat cannot be cleaned
I love the wall writings in this game but.... Ew.
Couldn't you go with idk blood or death or literally anything other than sweat.
.
We don't live forever.
When we're killed or finally pulled apart our diseased soils return to the ink to be reborn.
An unending cycle of torment.
But sometimes, something even worse can happen.
A soul can slip from the ink completely. It gets caught between worlds, unable to die or return.
They wail in the night. Drifting in shadow. The phantoms of the machine.
The ghosts.
So... You do live forever.
Liar.
Also this sounds like what happened to Henry.
Stuck in a loop of time unable to truly die and stuck in an endless cycle.
.
Werid how the ink demon doesn't have the ability to Flow like Audery and Porter do.
.
Ugh... Wilsons back.
Attention children of the machine. It's Wilson.
We know!
There have been lies that the Ink demon has been spotted in animation alley.
Pay no attention to these filthy rumours.
I destroyed the ink demon myself! Be died my hands do don't be afraid.
I legit forgot he said that.
He's a fucking liar.
I knew he was lying because obviously but wow.
If said demon kills him ima just turn the other way.
Didnt see it.
Your friend Wilson will protect you.
I'm more afraid of you than him frankly.
.
Without fear there's chaos
Wilson would love star wars with his whole with fear is order and with order there is no chaos and all that wallop.
.
Audery... Maybe don't punch through ink canisters.
Like I get it.
But you know could be glass or something. Hell there is a glass shattering sound.
Be careful.
.
Feels like Nathan is now going to the church of the ink machine.
Just like Joey before him.
.
And chapter 3 begins, the Eternal machine.
.
This is Wilson
Go away!
Anyone caught in the restricted areas will be taken immediately to the Pit.
Where a ballpit will send you to a Freddy Fazbear's pizzeria in the year 198-
... Wrong pit.
My bad.
So be a good egg.
Follow the rules.
.... Hmm nope.
.
Good to know the true enemy of Joey Drew studios is slow working lifts.
.
Audery gets in lift. Recalls in the 1st game how the lift crashed down and Susies Alice Angel stole Boris
...I have a bad feeling.
Unauthorised surface elevator in use. Manual lift ejection activated.
Knew it.
See lifts in this game... Not good.
Bad things in this game:
Lifts
And Wilson.
... And ink crabs now apparently.
Still better than Sea Bonnie's.
.
Audery finally gets the coffee she came for!
... Hold up its $15.
Jeez I knew Joey Drew studios went bankrupt and all that but... Who the fuck is paying that much for coffee.
Especially when it's called Compost Coffee.
... See this is scarier than the ink demon.
Late stage capitalism is the real enemy of this game.
.. And Wilson.
Fuck that guy.
... Actually don't.

//thanks for sending me this!//
5. What’s the best thing about the fandom?
//Honestly, the lore this series is packed with while hiding it under a blanket of adorableness. The world-building is solid, even opening up various concepts of what they represent; to this day, you still get theories that try to expand the reasoning behind the Dark Matter and Nova’s across the Gamble Galaxy.
But, of course, who am I kidding as DDD is the best thing without any sort of doubt.//
11. Are there some things you dislike about how the show/series/etc. portray the character you have picked up? If so, what?
//Honestly, how the anime (Hoshi no Kaabii, Kirby of the Stars, Kirby: Right Back at Ya!) portrayed my boi by turning him from a pompous douchebag tsundere into a highly-flanderized version that doesn’t develop at all. What makes his character remarkable is that despite his differences with Kirby, he nonetheless opens his heart to saving his kingdom from any sort of harm. This guy sealed up the bringer of nightmares, not accept business to boost up his dominance and masculine toxicity. In the anime, he doesn’t change and acts like a giant and abusive man baby, which personally disturbs me as that’s his whole character arc from the OG games gone to waste.
King Dedede is a jerk, but an entitled and loveable jerk, where if his kingdom is in jeopardy, he will step in and bring his hammer to action. Need I mention that he doesn’t only save his kingdom, but also save the entire universe back in Smash Bros., yet is never credited for his badges besides Ness and Luigi?
Personally, I’d check out the manga, titled Kirby: Manga Mania; he’s legit the Squidward of every story.//
12. What would you say is the most unique trait about your character?
//Well, what’s not unique about this character? He’s full of facts and interesting ones at that, so it’s hard to not notice anything minuscule about him at all!
I personally like how he can tell the difference between chaotic pranks and world-ending armageddons. He’s like that destructive child but knows when enough is enough, knowing when to put the hammer down literally and physically.
He’s also smarter than how media could portray him, like they normally make him a Pete prototype whose big on strength but never on brains or willpower. He is able to counteract physical beings of nightmares and see through otherworldly affairs such as the plans behind Tabuu, while cooking up a way to survive the impacts.
He doesn’t spend his time getting all murderously-jealous and violently-compensates all for the sake of one little puffball. #NotMyDedede.//
21. Which song do you feel describes your character the most and why?
//Honestly, Perfect World from an underrated movie, The Emperor’s New Groove. The song’s exactly how the lyrics emphasised where it’s a self-entitled song all about the main character, as in “me”. So, I see Dedede fully living in the pampered life as a spoilt prince, before he gets a dose of reality and changes his ways.
Sounds about right.//

Day 222 - 225 of let the sky faaaall
Ok I swear the title makes sense.
Heya how are we doing? Hope you had something to eat! ^^
WARNING: Lots of spoilers ahead for the season. I legit suggest playing it first before reading about my experiences. Or go ahead. I don't mind. Also warning that this is a long, long post.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So the Kingdom of Sky is really a mess now. At game startup you get welcomed by a lovely cutscene showing Eden exploding. So shards from that place start to get scattered all over Sky. Can't have that happen.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So how does this season work? It's completely different from the other seasons. First of all there are no spirits, which means no new emotes. Instead all cosmetic vendors are these crystal shapes. The quest area is just a giant void, completely seperated from any place in Sky. The crystals are called "Ancient Light" and "Ancient Darkness" respectively. Me thinks they might have been here for a really long time. So alone from that, that is already a bunch of lore on a level I have never really had before. The shape of a jellyfish and a krill makes me wonder if these are the literal representation of light and darkness.
Tumblr media
So onto the quests. The game doesn't give a cutscene when you accept the quest. It just tells you that you need to find a dark shard and destroy it. Where it is, is your guess. Now the best part of the season is that the quest is on a timed schedule similar to the sunset event in Sanctuary Island. 1:30hrs after reset and every 2hrs after that, the entire sky in Sky (heh) turns red, the atmoshpere changes completely. It legit makes the game feel eerie. This event is a warning that a dark shard will be launched soon and you should find the area where it lands. The game is nice enough to tell you in which region the crystal lands but the exact landing space is yours to find. Today it lands near the Forgotten Ark. I guess they prioritize season areas.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
So you found the crystal landing there (which, by the way is a spectacle to witness it landing), so now how to vanquish it? The big shard will be followed by a bunch of smaller ones that spread dark plants near them. Burn the dark plants to destroy the shards. This ain't an easy task. First of all the the area will be infested with crabs. Not the nice kind you can flip over, nooooo. These ones have crystals growing on them that prevent them from being flipped over. They are extremely aggressive and launch you even further than normal ones. Also they love to gang up on people that do a deep call. Additionally the shards themselves are dangerous. Touching them causes you to lose light. I once got launched into one by a crab and it caused me to lose half my light. Those things are not to be joked with.
The entire event is supposed to be done with multiple players. There are way too many crabs and dark plants to do this solo. Luckily it rewards the playera at the end so I can see people doing this event even in the future. One tactic I saw was one player playing bait for the crabs and constantly deep calling and running around in circles. That way the others can burn plants in peace.
After the plants are burned you enter a meditation circle and do a small spirit collection task, like normal spirits, just event themed. Finally after that you get your reward! Ascended candles! Yes the event rewards you with those. I got four candles out of this so this is really profitable.
Tumblr media
So you finally done it. What is the finishing quest cutscene? Well it's less a cutscene and more a scenic room. You get transported back into the void and see a bunch of jellyfish. I imagine the game will tell a story via these rooms with time. I wonder what will happen. There is no big celebration for this. Just a circle to return to home. The entire event has a really dark mood to it.
But this has been the season so far. The next quest starts in a week so you can bet I will be updating it then. I love this season already. ^^
Tumblr media
The first of many. 77 days total again so a total of 385 candles. Here we go again. ^^
Also found a new person for my constellation. Met them during the earth trial. They needed help to do the shortcut jumps so I just added them and led the way. Always nice to be helpful. ^^
Overalls this has been such an exciting time. The shard event is pure chaos and the dour mood is so much out of the ordinary for Sky, I can't help but love it. I just feel sorry for any new moth entering the game during this season and being overwhelmed with all this. Hope none of them give up the game because of this.
I sure have a blast. ^^

this is what happens when u enable me lets go
(spoilers ahoy)
Firstly, here’s some somewhat miscellaneous reasons that don’t contribute to any sort of narrative analysis but are still parts of the character I like.
His boss fight is my favorite in the game thus far. It’s not super hard, but it isn’t super easy either, and I even managed to solo it on my Balance after a few practice rounds. Sufficiently challenging without feeling unfair.
His boss fight music. It is a bop and a half, go give it a listen, my soul ascends from my body a few centimeters every time I hear it start up.
His voice. I’m sure it’s processed at least a little but gotdamn his voice is so deep and spooky it startled me when I first heard it. Very curious who his actor is; I think he and Inyanga Whitestripes share the same one. Either way, very well voiced and acted.
His design is very good. It’s the perfect mix of innocuous but also spooky sorcerer fella who knows some shit. And I was afraid that the designers would try and make him like. Handsome? Under the hood? To try and make him more sympathetic? But they didn’t and I’m glad for it.
With those out of the way, the next thing to establish, I guess: I don’t interpret Old Cob to be the main villain of arc 3, nor do I interpret Raven as such. They’re definitely antagonists, but they’re not the ultimate problem; the ultimate problem is their divorce, and how they keep dragging people into their bs. It’s established the Aethyr is a physical manifestation of their anger towards each other, and as it thins, communication between them becomes possible, as Sparck puts it in this thinly veiled metaphor toward the start of Empyrea part 2.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
But Cob’s still an antagonist and I love him so I’m gonna talk about that. Most of this is going to be talking about his motivations for doing what he does, since I don’t see him quite as the ‘likes to watch the world burn for the hell of it’ archetype that others might.
One of the reasons that drew me to his character is how legit his gripe is, when put in perspective. Old Cob- or Grandfather Spider, if you prefer- is not a mortal like the other antagonists of previous arcs, which establishes he has a different thought process right off the bat. This new universe was built on his suffering and he has a grudge against the ex wife who made it, so as a god, it makes some sense he’d try to destroy it and build one he would like better. He’s fully aware that what he is doing will hurt people but decidedly doesn’t care, and I appreciate that so much. He’s chaotic as fuck and he owns it, along with his superiority complex that’s as wide as the day is long.
Tumblr media
Yet his reasoning is like. Weirdly understandable? Like, if my ex-whatever put me in jail for a lifetime sentence and stole my kidney to pay for a new house or something, I too would go apeshit and want my fuckin kidney back. That’s mostly how I interpret his situation. He’s not doing this for hell of it, he’s doing it because he wants to get back at his ex because he’s bitter and petty and for the most part he knows this but he feels justified in doing do because she ripped out his goddamn kidney- I mean heart, and he wants that back.
And then, even after all that, he and his magic are treated as if they’re inherently evil. While, sure, Shadow is a ‘dark magic’, its actual properties aren’t anything malicious by itself. It is described as “a magic that changes reality,” and that’s it. Incredibly exploitable and you should practice caution while handling it, but used correctly it is powerful and helpful; this is likely alluding to the backlash mechanic, where likes decrease the percent of damage you take, dislikes increase the percent, and I imagine the person meant to be the literal embodiment of the magic in question to be similar in nature: not inherently harmful and lashes out if he feels he’s been mistreated.
Going off that, I’m not sure he ever wanted the FirstWorld to be destroyed, and therefore believes his incarceration to be entirely unjust; he doesn’t deny that he instigated the fight between the Titans, but when it comes to being accused of its actual destruction, he gets angry.
Tumblr media
...Okay the written text doesn’t really display how mad he got here, but he was like. Big Angy. Super offended. Honestly, a big part of why I love and analyze the hell out of his character comes from how his VA delivers his lines and his voice in general. If you haven’t heard it for some reason, I recommend looking it up. Anyway, here he’s basically saying he didn’t destroy the First World, and even if he did, he’s suffered enough punishment because of it, to my interpretation. The only one I remember blaming him for it is Raven; Bartleby was there, and I don’t recall him blaming anything other than the Titans for it. This is of course not accounting for the various changes made to the lore since he was introduced, but they could have easily thrown in a line like ‘And now Spider plans to destroy the Spiral the way he destroyed the FirstWorld!’ or something to make it clear it was done intentionally.
And this may very well be straying into headcanon territory here, but I think he holds positive relationships very closely to him, even if things went sour in the end; he clearly still has some remaining affection for the Titans, calling them ‘the children’ and being incredibly angry at Raven for forcing one of them to destroy his Heart.
When Rat loses in Polaris he shows up to praises his efforts and even comfort him, in his own weird way. He reprimanded Scorpion in Mirage, but it’s because Scorpion wasn’t doing what his dad asked him to and got his ass kicked as a result. As for Bat, every time they’re in the same room together he pays him some sort of compliment.
Tumblr media
Bat claims that he and his brothers are meant to be his tools, and to some extent that’s true, but he also genuinely cares about them, and it’s really interesting to see a villain defect from the usual ‘not caring about anyone other than themselves’ and openly show affection for his kids while still managing to be an incredible asshole.
In line with this is his relationship with the Wizard. There is, of course, a foundation of manipulation to their dynamic, at least to some degree. I thoroughly believe that Spider was overshadowing Coleridge, at least partly, so our character could bust him out of prison.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And while this is happening, he regains some of his spent power and removes threats to it as well, namely Morganthe, using the Wizard’s help. In fact, I have very little doubt that he was at least partially responsible for her fall; his timing on that two-liner was too on the nose.
Tumblr media
But even with that, I think he genuinely treasures the Wizard’s help and company, which is why he attempts on four different occasions to either sway them to his side, or warn them away from what he’s doing.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Boy, I want that vacation, but it’s your fault I’m here.
And then, of course, his relationship with Raven, something that is basically a summation of his character arc. Laden with baggage and tragic in concept, it is my belief that most of what he’s doing isn’t because he genuinely hates the Spiral or he wants to get back at her, but because he loved her and treasured their relationship; so upon her mistreating him, he lashed out at everything she’d made and detested it as a result. But only because he felt betrayed and hurt so he has to inflict that on other people because he is, as aforementioned, a petty and bitter old fuck.
Moving off that line of thinking, an admirable quality he possesses is how smart he is. This guy has so many wrinkles in his brain it must look like a raisin. Well, perhaps not ‘smart’ exactly, but how good he is at manipulating certain situations to his advantage. Like in Mirage; you just know that he was fully expecting Mellori to be there and fully planned to use her as a back up plan, or you could even argue that the whole debacle in Mirage was a ploy to get his hands on her, while having the added possible benefit of things actually working out.
Actually his scheme in Mirage was really interesting now that I think about it. His aim was to turn back time to when the FirstWorld was whole, further implying that he never wanted its destruction in the first place. It would also, of course, be a time where he had his Heart and would have the ability to avoid having it ripped out again. This would involve not having the Titans fight each other again, or at least not starting it and suffering the consequences. It would be everything he wanted to achieve knocked out in one go with minimal muss or fuss, compared to other methods. It’s probably a part of why he shows up personally to bargain with Eerkala and the Cabal, and why he directly intervenes in our Wizard’s efforts to stop him; it was too important to trust to any of his kids, so knowing Scorpion probably wouldn’t have been able to execute it anyway, he used his kid as a distraction for the most part.
I also like looking into the fact that his element, besides Shadow, is Storm, as opposed to pure Shadow or Death, as most major antagonists are. Storm is a school based on invention, experimentation and improvement. This is something that interests me for two reasons: one, the magic of major antagonists is always a part of their character, Malistaire the most blatantly, and two, because of this line he says in Mirage.
Tumblr media
To my interpretation, this would imply that he sees the Spiral as something that could be improved. And as a god, he would of course find it his obligation to try and fix this flaw. When he made the barter with the Cabal, I don’t doubt he was being at least partially honest about restoring the FirstWorld; it would certainly fix the flaw it has in the context of stealing his internal organs, but he would also probably seek to improve it, make it more suited to Shadow or something.
Something else I find intriguing is how weirdly honest he is; I don’t recall him ever lying to us once, unless you count omitting certain facts as lying. But that’s absolutely something I can see him using against people, like “I didn’t lie to you, I just didn’t tell you, your fault for not asking ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ .” As said before, he;s really good at manipulating people and he weaponizes whatever he can; @that-wizard-oki made a really great post about how he uses conflicts- his fault or not- to his advantage, and does his own thing in the background without interruption, Mirage and Neumia probably being the best example of this, with Scorpion and the Cabal serving as distractions while he either carries out things himself or gives instructions.
To pull all of this together narratively, I think it’s important to consider this line from Mellori during one of their confrontations:
Tumblr media
He feels powerless, so he puffs up his god status. He has little power to fight with, compared to before, so he mostly manipulates and creates back-up plans while causing conflicts to serve as distractions. His love hurt him, so he lashes out at others and drags them into his problems.
You may ask, “But Sam, these are all bad qualities, why should we like him because of this?” And I would respond “Because it makes him a complex and interesting antagonist.” The kind of character that executes his shitty actions in such a way that you can’t help but respect- even just for the level of dramatics put in to it- while also having a motive that makes you stop and consider that maybe he has a point but is very much handling the situation the wrong way.
Like, c’mon, he ticks so many villain boxes. Tragic backstory? Check. Blatant thespian who owns it? Check. Gets his hands dirty before the climax of the story? Check. Smart/ manipulative/ has back-up plans? Check. Understandable, strong motives? Check.
He’s got layers. Like onion. I felt like there was always something new to discover about him, and for that I can assert my opinion that he’s one of the best characters in Wizard101.
lmao if you read this far into my simp-for-shithead post congrats. feel free to shoot me more asks on the subject bc i cant write persuasive-essay-esque format anymore my brain is rotting. if you will excuse me, im off to listen to the chronoverge combat track for the 82937487734th time

I'm tired and it's late at night so I'm gonna ramble about each of the host's respective worst floors. who know. maybe I'll write up a top 3 best floors for each of them as well another time. I'm not negative, they just suck, the rest are ok to amazing
Cookie: ATF, Floor 245
oh my god. this floor is literally. so boring. I'm 22, so I'm old enough to do all three things (alcohol, tobacco, firearms) but the questions are BORING. the DisOrDat is annoying. the best part of the floor is the Gibberish Question and I didn't even understand the answer until the second time I played it. there's no real memorable quotes, no real memorable lore, and you know the worst part? the level is cluttered. alcohol, tobacco, and firearms EASILY could have had their own individual floors but they were crammed together so it's just flipping between the three. it's not a fun floor
Guy: Deprivation, Floor 280
initially, I didn't hate this floor. I thought it was... fine. weak but not inherently bad. but oh god playing it for the sake of line digging... UGH. besides the... very not-funny black comedy 'joke' about Guy's bad experience in jail, the rest of the floor is more gross than Plagues, somehow. the Bingo level VOMIT being more than enough ew, with all the retching sounds, even Guy sounds sick by the level start. not to mention the "I'd drink either" comment he has to the prompt "piss and [vinegar]" ew Guy. the rest of the level is gross or boring. to top it off, it has the Deprivation Song after you're done. that song makes me feel legit numb. and not a good way. Guy has a lot of good floors so initially I didn't think he had a 'bad' floor, but yeah this is. bad.
Schmitty: Great Hoaxes, Floor 360
yeah of course this one was coming. Schmitty has some really weak floors, but this one takes the cake. at least HALF of the hoaxes are so desperately outdated that I have no idea what they're asking and that makes it frustrating. also the Shakespeare question is a shot in the dark question and those are obnoxious. most importantly, fuck that DisOrDat. seriously. learn some tact Schmitty. probably the worst level in the game as well.
Nate: Meat, Floor 945
my opinion easily could change when I actually get to the Nate floors again but I HATE this level. when I say it's gross, I mean it. legit my first playing of it I had to pause the game because it made me vomit. I don't like meat but I HATE meat production it's so... gritty. plus Nate comments on the concept of eating fingernail clippings with cerumen and- ugh. oh god I feel sick again. bad floor.

Blind Date Gaming: The Addams Family
You all know PRANG, my Pseudorandom Number Generation matchmaker? Well, it recently gave me this weird questionnaire to try and set up a date more suited for my odd personality. I happily filled it out, hoping for a real connection to be made with my next game date. We fed it through the sketchy scantron machine attachment that somehow got grafted to PRANG's chassis and, after an ear-splitting buzzing that may have made me slightly deaf, the results were printed out. They dictated that I needed a real family game. I guess that triggered something special in PRANG, as it quickly flipped around and grabbed what I can assume totally wasn't the first title in its game list with the word 'Family' in it: The Addams Family!
Tumblr media
Man, computers are too complicated for simpletons like me. Well, let's get datin' and see if this is a match! I started the game as what I can only imagine is a chubby, tiny clone of Gomez Addams. I mean, why else would all of the house decor be the size of 2.5 Gomezes? (Is that a unit of measurement? Well it is now)
Tumblr media
He's small, but can jump like 3 Gomezes in the air! He's like the Jack Russel's of 90's characters
So you run around your house looking for sub-areas, throwing daggers that go about 2 Gomezes in front of you before disappearing. Enemies lurk at every step, and boy are they horrifying! Mostly in how crappily they are programmed and placed. Bats flap to your level and never deviate, pretty much ensuring you get hit. Ghosts constantly spawn and may be right on staircase tops, meaning you get hit as soon as a map loads. You can jump on some enemies to stun them but like you have no indicator what can and can't be given the ol' hop-treatment.
Tumblr media
I'm not sure if this guy wants a hug or is holding a really heavy invisible box
None of this would be an issue if you didn't have limited ammo. From the get-go, your knives are all you have. In a boss fight and run out? Well, go commit suicide, because you can't do anything. Fun! The bosses are alright, though. Most are too easy, but they are definitely interesting. Like in one case, there's this bear that cannot attack you if you jump behind it. In another, the Grim Reaper's best weapon is spitballs? I feel like there's some lost lore here in the Addam's Family universe that needs fanfic-ing.
Tumblr media
Still waiting for this model to be offered at Build-a-Bear Workshop
When you beat a boss, you rescue a family member and get a cool new item. Usually, they're weapons of some sort, but some instead help you to traverse the world. While this could have been a nice progression system, there's really only one place where this is required, and instead progress is tied to how many family members you have rescued. Only THEN do random doors in your own house become accessible. I think Gomez needs to install those doors with open-able locks that constantly prevent my toddler from dying alone from starvation in most rooms of my house because she doesn't know how to unlock locks she's already locked us out of.
Tumblr media
Your gratitude is well-received, Lurch my man. But can we talk about what the heck some frozen water is going to do besides get my pockets wet in like 5 minutes?
There are also small potion powerup things that transform you into typical movie monsters, but none are really super-interesting. Regardless, I get through a bunch of ho-hum platforming levels, collect my fam, electrocute my brother some more (as is tradition), and make it to the final level! This level is akin to the final level in Super Mario Land 2 in that it is long, filled with neat traps, and pretty rough. I do like the decor, though, what with buzzsaws, unmarked falling spike chandelier things, and amazingly large guillotines.
Tumblr media
I may be an Addams myself because these little death traps actually made me smile a bit. Very cute, level designers! I like your chops!
So after I boogie down his gauntlet of Super Meat Boy paraphernalia, I at last make it to the final boss's room. And he's...some...guy? This is probably a dude from the movie, but I haven't seen it in years, so I have no clue. But like legit all he does is stand, jump, and throw knives. Well, two can play that game! No really, I mean like, that's literally all I do, too. En guarde!
Tumblr media
Oh hey, Troy McClure is in this game, too!
So we have the lamest version of the Dark Link fight from Zelda 2 ever and I end up on top. I save my wife from what appears to be some killer soup stock? Sorry honey, I won't get to experience your umami tonight, we gotta bury this businessman's corpse and stop Lurch from overheating the fridge's icemaker. Oh, but where are my manners, caramia? Let's catch that ending sequence first! What should we do with the rest of the Addams Family now that we have secured their freedom?
Tumblr media
I like that, of all action verbs at their disposal, they chose 'throttle'.
Brilliant. Well, that was a quick jaunt. Not great, but also not horrible? I probably wouldn't try to date it again, but that's more because I feel I've experienced all it had to offer. Gomez should either find some super mushroom or hire a better home decorator who isn't a giant? But knowing the Addams Family, they probably know literal giants. Whatever, he probably need a stool to reach his toilet, but that is all his choice. As for you, your choice is whether or not to take this Sprite of Passage. (I'd say do it! You earned it!)
Tumblr media
I feel like the manager made the enemy designer give him 2 pitchforks because he wanted the boss to at least appear SOMEwhat spoopy, but didn't have the heart to tell the designer to start over
BONUS: I feel like sharing this music track from the game because I think it's absolutely baller: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YlTNNOeX-E0&list=PL5YdbMaKCdoiF4XkX-ac-4M9QU1UPjlmq&index=5
Also, because I am amazed that it exists, someone's piano cover of it! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r5XODMmPGh4

what is your absolute favorite ship? How did you start shipping Stevidot? And rant about any ship you feel like, good or bad? :))
Tumblr media
… you fool
OH GOD ALL-TIME FAVORITE SHIP YOU SAY. YOU KNOW DAMN WELL I CAN’T CHOOSE ONE.
(it’d probably be Stevidot anyway; objectively I’ve done more for it than anything else I ever shipped in my life and it’s absolutely precious both in platonic and romantic forms)
BUT IN THE INTEREST OF FAIRNESS… and attempt to tone down redundancy, let’s see what other ships earned the “OTP” label from me!
Tumblr media
I mean, I pretty much had to lowkey ship Mamoru Chiba x Ami Mizuno because Usagi/Mamoru is basically what Connverse wishes it could be as far as the Ultimate Ship goes. So at the height of my involvement in the fandom (you know, late 90s era), I was never brave enough to make anything for this ship. But the few times they get to interact in the classic anime is legit adorable stuff and I wish we could’ve had more of it.
Tumblr media
Before Gem Ascension, before Travels of the Trifecta, my greatest multichaptered epic was a Digimon Tamers fic called By My Decision. I was a hardcore Digimon fan in my early teen years well before I ever got into Pokemon, in fact. And I shipped shitloads of pairings in Adventure and 02 - I can only imagine how many of those would be demonized by the new age fandom puritans of Tumblr nowadays. You can actually see literally everything I ever shipped on my FFN profile here.
But I didn’t really make anything for the first two seasons. Tamers was what really sparked my inspiration, because Takato and Jenrya… honestly, they’re just adorable together. They get to bond a lot, they’re really in touch with their feelings (contrasting to token girl Ruki who was a stiff hardass most of the time), and I often got the impression that Jenrya, unlike Takato, really doesn’t have any other friends.
So of course, I tormented these two on the regular in my story. I of course didn’t forget Juri (for I love her dearly); I was kinda trying a love triangle subversion with Takato angsting over loving both Jenrya and Juri… while Juri’s still got so much PTSD (story is 2 years post-series), shipping is hardly on her mind, and Jenrya’s outright in denial of his feelings for Takato to the point where it very literally screws him up and awakens some inner darkness of his own. I even had Jenrya and Juri bond, but it was pretty platonic stuff.
Still, this ship was way down on the totem pole at the height of Tamers’ fandom. Very frustrating. Takato/Ruki and Jenrya/Ruki were way more popular and I hated both of those ships something fierce. I love Ruki, but I just cringe at the idea of shipping her with either of her fellow leads. Then Jenrya/Ryo got something of a cult following that I couldn’t stand; admittedly I was jealous it was getting the representation that I felt Takato/Jenrya desperately needed more, and I also didn’t like Jenryo in its own right, anyway.
But yeah. Jenkato is a very underappreciated ship that I loved dearly and invested many of my teenage years into.
Tumblr media
So, here’s a fun fact: While I played the classic games (my cousins had a Sega Genesis), the way I was mostly raised on Sonic was via the first two cartoon series and the Archie Comics version of the franchise. Archieverse was largely based on the SatAM cartoon; Amy Rose also didn’t exist in the show and it took about 25 issues for her to show up in the comic.
So I was big on Tails x Amy. For a long-ass time. And really, the ship was really only feasible in the Archie continuity. There, Tails is actually older than his usual depicted canon age and Amy is introduced to be around his age before she artificially aged herself with a magic ring so that she could later take on her Sonic Adventure design.
Before that… in these years, Sally was the most well-known love interest of Sonic in the west. So Sonic/Sally seemed like a lock (none of us knowing how Sega felt about that at the time) - and in retrospect I honestly believe it’s a far better Sonic ship than his more well-known modern alternatives.
So, because of Sally’s prominence, Amy was relegated to Sonic’s fangirl and her crush wasn’t really that big a deal. Honestly, that was for the best, as I by far found Amy way more tolerable in Archie’s incarnation than the majority of her other canon contemporaries (Sonic the Comic Amy Rose is more of a competent badass, though).
Tails and Amy had some good banter in Archieverse and the few times they were allowed time to do stuff together as a duo, they were very cute and endearing and I loved them.
Tails also had a lot more going on in terms of character development and backstory in Archieverse. Like, a lot more going on. He even had a “Chosen One” deal that sadly didn’t have a very good payoff, but. It’s more than what they really do with Tails in any other continuity.
Bear in mind, I started on these comics when I was eight or nine years old. Yet I followed this comic well into my late teens and even part of my early twenties, so you can tell Archieverse Sonic has shitloads of lore to it to have that long of an ongoing narrative.
After Sonic Adventure was released, then the Sonamy shipping started to explode. Amy was front-and-center in the spotlight, Sally became the obscure figure in the fandom, and it’s more-or-less stayed that way ever since.
But I was like “It’s okay! Tails and Amy are still tight in Archieverse! Sucks they have to adjust to Sega’s many changes but they’re still best buddies who’ll hopefully get married one day….”
Then 25 Years Later happened and for some goddamned stupid-ass reason, Tails was paired with Mina the Mongoose and I believe Amy was suspiciously never ever mentioned in the future timeline stories (as Sonic and Sally did become endgame in this little series).
Tails and Mina had little to no interaction, and Mina was largely there to be a potential Sonic love interest, and even after she moved on, she got together with another character and still didn’t interact with Tails.
I was sooooooo pissed off. Archieverse was my one hope for Tails/Amy becoming a thing and they ruined it for me. :(
Tumblr media
I did get a consolation prize in Geoffrey St. John x Hershey becoming so canon they actually did marry. That’s another one I shipped ever since they first interacted years and years ago.
Of course, Hershey was then “killed off” - and was set for a major comeback, but Ken Penders put a stop to that and had them both erased from reality because fuck Ken Penders, I actually got a nice thing and you yanked it right out of my hands.
Tumblr media
Genis Sage x Mithos Yggdrasill from Tales of Symphonia, a ship I hardcore loved enough to write about. Also a ship I think Tumblr would burn me at the stake for shipping at all, but you know what? Fuck Genis x Presea. It’s a boring-ass puppy love ship that in its own right should be lambasted similarly according to anti logic.
…. did I get sidetracked? I did? Pfff. Okay, let’s try and get to another question.
Tumblr media
How I started shipping Stevidot?
Pretty simple story, really. I binged SU all the way up to Escapism (Change Your Mind hadn’t aired yet) last December/January. Also watched a looooot of Youtube clips. Most involving Peridot.
And inevitably, most involving Steven as well.
When I started getting into Peridot and SU as a whole enough to seek out fanfiction and whatnot, I didn’t really have any set shipping preferences at first. But when I made myself think about it… honestly, Stevidot just felt the most natural to me. I wanted to see stories about antics with those two specifically - I never liked Lapidot and Amedot did nothing for me ever. So Stevidot was like, pretty much the only thing I really focused on after a while.
Then I found A Gem Like You. And suddenly, INSPIRATION! I developed headcanons for Watcher’s fic, I started reading as much Stevidot as I could, and I was convinced it was the best pairing in the world and fucking hell I need to give it some representation after I noticed how relatively niche it was in the fandom.
And so, Stevidot consumed my soul for all time. I hope those clods are happy.
Rant about a ship, you say…
Good god, that really does need to be its own post. I have so much to say about various ships in general, I may need a bit to… uh, figure that out. Or throwing out some random ones I’d know about would help my focus, fff.

Smokey brand Reviews: Til All Are One
So I'm finishing up The Umbrella Academy, i wanted to rewatch the last three episodes one more time because they’re f*cking glorious, and I finish up at around two in the morning. I’ve been awake since five. Cats are real tired, man. I go to log out on turn off the PS4 but, low and behold, f*cking Siege is out! I thought i had another day! Looks like I'm not getting any sleep. I’ve been waiting for this thing to release all goddamn year! I’m on record as to being a massively, ridiculously, unapologetic fan of Transformers, G1 specifically, so this how was a no-brainer. I’ve kept an eye on the toy line, the best since Generations, and have been chomping at the bit to see those designs in motion. Today is that day. looks like I'm not getting any rest today.
The Great
The voice acting is on point. I heard that’s why this was delayed in the first place; Netflix wanted all international voicing completed before release. I respect that decision. I don’t agree with it, but i respect it. Plus, if that extra time gave the cast a little more time to polish their performances, all the better. Seriously, this is some of the best Transformers voicing I've heard in a good while.
I cannot gush enough about this cast. They’re excellent. I’m a G1 purist, so whenever a new voice comes out of Prime or Megatron, i get a frothy. There are only a few cats that get the pass. These new cats? They’re all excellent, specifically Jake Foushee as Optimus Prime and Jason Marnocha as Megatron. These cats came with the heat and i loved every second of it.
The entire cast is great, and props to Megs and Prime, but big up to Frank Todaro as Starscream. Look, Screamer is my favorite Transformer from way back. A lot of that had t do with his original voice, Chris Latta. For decades, literal decades, no one came close to even sounding close to Latta. That stands to reason, he has one of the most unique voices in all 80s cartoons. I had to get used to Screamer sounding wrong but this dude Todaro? He’s the closest to right i have ever heard and it damn near brought me to tears. They didn’t massacre my boy!
This f*cking show is stunning. It’s gritty, dark, and spectacular. Those boxy G1 models pop with all of that new detail and updated mechanics. Everything is so familiar but given a polish of modern technology and thirty years f design growth. It’s f*cking amazing to see. I love every second of this world and it’s breathtaking visuals. This is what G1 looks like thirty-six years later and it is truly beautiful.
The sound design on this show is exceptional. The transforming effects, the laser blast, f*cking Megatron’s fusion cannon; All of it feels right. There’s an air of nostalgia too everything but a distinct originality as well. It’s weird. I mean, they even put the vocoder effect on Soundwave. I respect the f*ck out of that.
I like this story. I’m a legit sucker for revisiting the Cybertron War any time. I have tons of comics covering that epoch in Transformers history. The War Within, an old Dreamwave take, was my favorite rendition but Siege does a great job giving that thing a run for it’s money.
The action set pieces do a great job showing off what each Bot can do. I enjoyed seeing how practical Mirage’s hard light holograms can be used in battle and the visceral power of Megatron’s fusion cannon was perfectly captured.
The Meh
This thing is short. It’s only six episodes. Now, this really isn’t a ding on anything, The show is excellent, i just wanted more. More time on this ruined Cybertron. More time with this War. More time to see the cost of this violence. I understand this is the first of a trilogy so there are definitely more to come and I'm not asking for some thirty episode epic, but can a brother get at least ten? I mean, that’s the minimum, right? Especially when they’re only thirty minutes long. Six episodes is mad tight.
The short episode count forces this thing to move at a ridiculous pace. You get in and out of episode so fast, man. So much goes on, so quickly, it’s hard to really appreciate everything happening onscreen. Objectively, this is kind of a hindrance to the show but i was too enamored with everything else that i didn’t really care. I noticed but i didn’t care.
There’s a lot of walking in through fog all sinister like. That sh*t loses it’s luster after a while.
The Verdict
I love this show. I mean, is that really a surprise? I adore Transformers, literally every aspect of this franchise. Not Bayformers, though. F*ck that sh*t. Transformers: War for Cybertron Siege is one of the best. I love everything about this show. The look, the sound design, the narrative, the voice acting; It’s all great. It doesn’t touch the quality of, say, G1, Beast Wars, or Prime, but it’s the best thing released in probably the last half-decade or so. The pacing is mad brisk, it’s only six episodes, but those things are jam packed with lore and world-building. I love the Cybertron War narrative and this is probably the second best I've seen it done, after the actual War for Cybertron games. As a fan, specifically a G1 fan, this show is everything i want in a Transformers series. It’s a great, beautiful, watch, if a little short.

have you ever even taken a literary class? you seem to think that stories with no dark parts and characters with no negative past experiences are better than anything that has depth. don’t present your opinion as “edgy stories are bad stories pandering to their fan base”, present it as it really is, “i don’t like watching/reading anything remotely upsetting” i love your work but i disagree with your dislike of something that makes stories better.
don’t present your opinion as “edgy stories are bad stories pandering to their fan base”, present it as it really is, “i don’t like watching/reading anything remotely upsetting”
Isn’t that the same sentence? Either way, neither one is actually true.
Here’s the thing, my reductionist friend: I don’t rail against stories that have depth. I rail against a particular kind of insecure edginess where a story doesn’t have anything to say, there’s just a lot of doom and gloom with nothing of substance going on.
Some of my favorite shows (Avatar, Voyager, ect) are ABOUT something. The tone is generally uplifting, but they’re much deeper shows than their tone would imply. I LOVE writing deep stories, it’s why almost everything I write is in the Slice of Life genre because it facilities actual depth the best.
You can’t say that I don’t like unpleasant things happening in a story after literally everything I’ve put all four iterations of Ascentia through, or what I did to Scars!Valithria and Suzu.
Have you met me? I am an extremely cruel writer.
The problem we’re having these days is that a lot of stories are taking shortcuts to give off the idea of depth to an undiscerning (or uncaring) audience. A lot of people are VERY insecure about the animation industry’s position in “The Discourse” and really want it to be taken seriously as a media that adults can enjoy.
This goal has actually been largely achieved by Pixar. Pixar movies, especially films like Wall-E, Finding Nemo/Dory, Inside Out and Toy Story are actually about really heavy subject matter. But they LOOK like kiddie movies and so that’s not good enough.
That insecure mindset doesn’t want to have meaningful discussion. It just wants the superficial trappings. Blood, violence, vaguely gesturing to lore as a substitute for a meaty story, grand adventure with high stakes but no payoff. These are people who use the music track of The Last Agni Kai as a sign that it “means something” rather than the conclusions of the character arcs involved. The kind of people who claim Teen Titans was this “super mature show” because Raven had red eyes that one time and ignore the 90% silly comedy happening in it.
The end result are shows that are joyless, soulless AND malnutritious. There was just an epic score and some black paint somewhere and that registers as “deep and meaningful” to some terminally dense people.
Like, you see this?
Tumblr media
This is writing and design shorthand for “PLEASE TAKE US SERIOUSLY!” And if you have to beg to be taken seriously, you didn’t deserve it in the first place.
Just making Rapunzel look like a Shiny Pokemon that Game Freak couldn’t be bothered trying with tricked a lot of people into thinking that this was some deep and important scene, rather than just the lazy “reverse power” we’ve seen a thousand times.
I’m reminded of when Bronies spent a long time theorizing about the “Elements of Disharmony” and were legit disappointed when they were told that was never happening. They really thought it would make the story deeper, when in reality it was such an assembly line, lazy trope that no self-respecting producer would allow it.
You ask me if I ever took a literary class, but your entire opinion on storytelling is still deadlocked in a 14 year-old “edgy fanfiction” mindset where it’s less about being deep than it is about feeling “epic” in the most bland and predictable way possible.
Just killing a bunch of people or bringing in dark magic isn’t deep.
Inside Out was deep. Beowulf was not.

Smokey band Reviews: What Is a Man
I wanted my next review to be The Invisible Man but i keep putting that thing off. I think it’s the pacing. it’s kind of funky. I’ll get around to it eventually. Spoiler alert, it’s pretty interesting so far. In the meantime, i finally caught up on a show that dropped and didn’t see when it first released; Castlevania! I passed on actually reviewing he first two season, well, season and a half. That first season was, like, six episodes. This ain’t the BBC, son. Thirteen or bust! Anyway, since we’re about three days from being under marital law, i figure i got time to revisit and review the series so far. Plus, i mean, i need to catch up since the fourth season has already been announced. F*cking Netflix, man. In that vein, pun in tended, here is my review of the series as a whole so far.
The Good
This show is not anime. It’s not. Avatar is not anime. It’s not. This is a sanitized facsimile of what the Japanese do with their animation. Stop calling this sh*t anime! That said, on it’s own, outside of that hilariously unflattering comparison, it can be pretty dope. I don’t think this sh*t holds a candle to studios like Trigger, Madhouse, Gainax, or Shaft, but it’s the best animation coming out of the US i’ve seen in years. The fight scenes in particular are absolutely gorgeous. You can really tell that Netflix invested the necessary resources to make this show look dope, even if the framerate is a little iffy between set pieces.
Now that i’ve died on my anime cross, i just want to acknowledge how good this show looks. It’s f*cking gorgeous, man. I mean, the world, alone, is a feat for the eyes, but i am absolutely in love with the character designs. If you google the characters from the games they are mad cluttered and full of extra nonsense. I’m never a fan of, like, flair on my characters. That’s why i hate the look of Mortal Kombat. That sh*t is gross. Castlevania has that same issue, culminating in the design vomits of Judgement. That game was gross to look at. Gross. This show takes the ludicrously gaudy designs of the games and make them presentable while still paying homage to the core design of the games. Sh*t is miraculous and i can’t help but marvel at that ingenuity. I mean, f*cking Carmilla, dude. Just look up Carmilla in the games and tell me this show ain’t good at it’s job.
Castlevania’s writing is kind of miraculous. As a cat that’s been playing these games since the late 80s, I’m mildly aware of the interconnecting lore between titles. It’s a mess. It’s a goddamn mess. There’s a dope story there, in the muck, but it’s so mired in melodrama, retcon, and years upon years of independent development, it’s completely lost. I appreciate Konami giving storytelling a shot during a time when gameplay was the principal seller of games, they didn’t have to do any of that, but, at some point, clean your sh*t up with a manga or reboot or something, man. The later titles do this sh*t fine. I adore Shanoa and Soma. Their games got the best of both worlds. The Belmonts? Not so much... This show does an amazing job of cutting through the bullsh*t and sharpening that story to a fine point. This is Trevor’s story, the first Belmont we take control of in game, so watching his line grow through the years, with this quality of storytelling, is mad compelling. I mean, you get right into it and it grips you from start to finish. I can’t wait to see where this goes.
The character work in this show is pretty legit. I was thoroughly surprised since the games themselves are rather bare bones and nauseatingly campy at times. Not this show. Nope! This sh*t is grim, dark, and violent. I love it! You can feel the plight one people and the rage of the vampires. Each main character s is beset with pathos and trauma and consequence, for two seasons. Season three is kind of light on growth but does a decent job explaining certain things. Like, this is Belmont’s tale but Sypha is definitely the most interesting character in the show. Everyone does a great job but there are, of course, a few standouts.
Speaking of my girl, did i tell you that Sypha is f*cking amazing? Ma is the most adorable, most badass motherf*cker in this show! I thought she was going to be kind of a weenie, like she is in the games, but nope! Ma is out here, burning motherf*ckers alive and slicing dudes up with ice blades, all the while being her peppy, adorable, kind of bloodthirsty self. F*ck, love Sypha and her voice actress, Alejandra Reynoso, is perfectly cast! She bring a levity and vulnerability to a woman who can take on an army all y her lonesome. I love that sh*t!
I have to mention how dope Dracula is in this how. He’s f*cking badass and, surprisingly, hilarious. His wit is as sharp as his fangs. Even with such overwhelming power, dude is still amazingly human, often time reminding you that he is just a broken, lonely, man. It’s incredible to see. you actually empathize with an entity hellbent of slaughtering humanity. I couldn’t believe that sh*t. A lot of that has to do with the writing but Graham McTavsh does an excellent job delivering those subtle emotional cues.
I feel like is should say something about Richard Armitage’s Trevor Belmont. Dude is dope. he’s how i always imagined Trevor to be. And Armitage is a seasoned veteran at this voice acting game so he does a great job. I’m not blown away or anything but he’s dope. Considering dude is kind of a supporting character in his own show, i think my indifference is warranted. He’s good, though, don’t misunderstand. I’m not decrying his performance or anything. Gold star for sure.
The best thing about season three, outside of my darling Sypha, is Lenore. Holy sh*t is she a great character! I was thoroughly surprised by how brazenly manipulative she turned out to be. Lenore is a f*cking genius and her feigned naivety is brought to life by an absolutely outstanding performance from Jessica Brown Findlay. Ma is on the long con and Carmilla might have some competition to look for.
I like Issac. This last season did wonders for developing his character. His arc is probably the best after Syph’s, mostly because he’s the only other character that even had an arc. His voice actor, Adetokumboh M'Cormack, does a great job developing the enigmatic Forgemaster into a character more than his humdrum game origins.
The Bad
This show is not anime! Stop telling me it’s an anime!
Alucard’s arc in season three was a little... me. I thought he was the one character let down by the writing but it’s not a terrible slight. I just felt he deserved more of a exploration than what he received.
Season three was straight up filler. I guess it has that in common with anime, even though most modern anime ha move away from the Filler system. I mean, i liked a lot of what went on and the character work was delightful but none of this is really of consequence. Most characters either didn’t grow or are exactly who we thought they were. It feels cheap.
Hector. What the f*ck, Hector. What the f*ck.
The Verdict
Season One showed a ton of potential. I enjoyed the whole Dracula arc, even though this was more a story about his disillusionment with humanity rather than how he became Dracula. Season two is the Castlevania know from the games. It was dope seeing that narrative removed from the shenanigans of that Konami narrative jank. I thought they id the characters dope ass justice and the story itself, was rather compelling. I didn’t mind the character changes and the stuff they added felt organic. Season three is the closest thing to a slice of life anime i’ve seen in this show and it’s ridiculous. Like, nothing really happens of consequence and it feels like setup for later seasons but it’s easily the best looking of the three seasons.
Overall, as a whole, Castlevnia is really good. It’s easily one of the best video game adaptions available. This show takes it’s liberties, of course, but it does so in a very respectful manner. The core of the Castlevania lore is revered and embellished with creative additions while keeping the characters true to their game selves. For the most part. I really enjoyed thee character of Dracula when he was around and, oh my god, Lenore is the goddamn best! Sypha is the MVP of this show, though, and i need you people to know that. The art style is beautiful, the narrative is compelling, and you’ll fall in love with the character work. Castlevania is dope and you should go binge all of it since there is literally nothing else to do under quarantine.

Dekusquad Wakfu Class HCs bc I'm a Loser
Man, we all know Dekusquad would play an RPG game for the hell of it!!! Wakfu is so up Deku's ally bc all the classes are like so unique and cool asdfghjkl! (Had to go on the fricken Nox server bc I had legit no saved characters on it, so I could just play around with classes without worry of messing up my saves)
Anyway, choices based around personality and quirk
Midoriya Izuku:
This boi is Sacrier!
Sacrier's are self sacrificial with powers magnified with every hit! Midoriya's drive to be a hero just aligns with this mindset (and his constant bone breaking...)
Tends to be the leader of their party bc he's probs higher level and more experienced! Plus, Sacriers fall into one of the heavy hitter classes, so combine all of that and his critical thinking in battle and you get a BEAST
Has his inventory completely full of all types of junk he's picked up and his haven bag inventory isn't any better
Everyone wants to trade with him bc of all his rare novelties and he just can't say no cause he doesn't really need it
Probably has a pet Boon named Might Jr.
Haven Bag is a literal gobbal and he named it Cauliflower
Has notebooks that analyze the lore and joins reddits and official website discussions for the heck of it
High level runes in his inventory
Cried when Dot finally dies
"That sweet woman that took my character in gave me Dot to take care of and-and I killed him!!!!"
Help this boi
Iida Tenya:
Huppermage at heart
Huppermage's thirst for knowledge and their tireless work for balance align with Iida's drive and morals
Confused but also intrigued with the class creator
Almost chose Xelor, but he's not into time fucking
Does more damage with weapons and combat rather than spells
Tosses out things he feels he doesn't need
Has a buuuuunch of weapons stored in his inventory
Probably has a pet Tofu
Probably more into the lore than any of them and constantly challenges Midoriya in knowledge about it
Probably attempted to play Dofus but couldn't get behind it with all of their quests in Wakfu
Uraraka Ochaco:
She's a pure Eniripsa with the playing style of an Enutrof
Heals the team most of the time (only reason she chose Eniripsa tbh aside from sharing cheekmarks) and really likes that she's the only onw that can naturally fly in the pary
Sweety, how do you have so many pets and kamas at the same time
Only keeps rare items
"Uraraka, you're supposed to make runes with the material you don't want" "Oh no, Deku! I need these to trade kamas"
Has a Drheller named Sniffer
No one knows how she got a Drheller
If anyone in the party's pets are running low on health, she pretty much has everything they need
Immediately traded Dot for kamas
Asui Tsuyu:
She's a Sadida
Upset there are no frog-like characters, but cats, dogs, and even pandas have they're own lil classes
Picks the only characters with naturally green hair out of silent resentment
Really enjoys indirectly controlling plants tho
Does most of the healing when Uraraka is busy getting kamas
Has named her lil Sadida doll Swamp bc that's all he does in battle
Does most of the defense somehow bc Iida and Midoriya can't do it
Todoroki Shouto:
He's an Eliotrope bc he finds the class intriguing
Suddenly wants a teleportation quirk
Has wack and crack theories about the lore
Not invited to discussions about the lore
Does a lot of the closed combat fighting in the group
Still trying to figure out protection spells so Midoriya will stop getting himself killed
Was just as torn up about Dot as Midoriya
Probably has a Dauge names Touya and a Kerubaby named Rei
Probably has a bunch of extra characters for solo missions
Gets upset if someone gets in the spot he plans on transporting to bc he's a brat
Tokoyami Fumikage:
Boi's an Osamodas
Constantly summons minions and refers to them as Dark Shadow bc why not
Named a Croum after Dark Shadow
Dark Shadow constantly sneaks onto his account somehow
Tokoyami is not amused
Barely plays and is the lowest level
Pretty much empty inventory
Dark Shadow knows more about the game than him and probably does most of the playing
Rage plays out of lack of knowledge esque frustration
Aoyama Yuuga
Foggernaut bc they're just as extra as him
Only has an account to occassionally drop in
Typically takes most of the hits somehow
Can't keep a pet alive bc he keeps dying
Took on a group of lvl 200 characters by himself and happily lost
Randomly clicks spells like the noob he is
Is still somehow helpful and they love when he shows up for raids and missions
High level character class default outfit discusser
Has high level in all design based careers
Probably has Momo make everyone cosplay for their characters and has them do weird larping things while he records

Alright so this is going to be a fun post and I totally didn't type it up in notepad so I wouldn't risk losing it via refreshing. Basically this post is just going to be a mess of like. The lore ideas I have for my Saints Row insert. General warning for spoilers if you haven't played the games yet, and also mass confusion because it's fucking wild. Also warnings for death, abuse, human trafficking, prostitution, gangs, violence, drowning, dodgy politicians, kidnappings, missing children, cancer, guns, assults, implied sexual abuse, and probably more stuff like that. Saint's Row kinda is dark like that. So please don't feel like you gotta read this lorepost if that stuff will harm u!!
So my self insert for Saints Row takes the position of the Boss (ie the player character throughout most of the games.). She generally follows the same events as the boss, but her timeline and when events actually occur is different. Also her personality is a little varied but probably closest to the Laura Bailey voice except she knows how to technology a little. The Saints Row timeline is canonically fucked to hell so legally I have to change dates around. And by fucked I mean some events in the 3rd game occur after the Earth is Destroyed bc nobody checked the dates. Also my bosses age is changed so that she's not an adult in SRTT, cos Matt would be 16 then and like. That dodgy.
So instead we have a 12 yr old running around shooting stuff for 4 years beforehand. Great! Alright here we go this is the rough lore I have so far in the worlds worst text post.
"Lee", born Emily Hart, was born and raised in the UK on February 17th, 2000, in North West London. She was mainly raised by her grandparents as her parents were somewhat absent in her life. This went on for a good 12 years, where Lee went to primary school and started secondary; became a cub scout, and generally had a decent upbringing. This all changed when her grandparents both died of cancer suddenly when she was 12. Being left with only her mother and uncle, she felt distant from her family, and soon enough her life was changed forever once again.
"Reports are coming in that a British child has potentially been abducted in Central London earlier this week. It was reported previously that Emily Hart, a twelve year old girl from North West London, had not returned home on Tuesday night. The family feared that she had perhaps run away due to stress in the family over a recent death, and appealed for the public to encourage her to come home. However, the case took a tragic turn when police uncovered CCTV footage that appeared to show someone matching the description of Emily being taken from the streets and loaded into a van. Roadblocks were put in place, but no van matching the description was found. The number plates reportedly came back as stolen, and the CCTV footage was too grainy to see the identities of the kidnappers. The Hart family is appealing for any information about this tragic case to come forward, and police believe if they act quickly enough, they will be able to bring Emily home safely."
- A news report, probably.
The Morningstar gang had kidnapped Lee in plain sight in the middle of the day on the busy streets of London. It was practically unheard of for this kind of thing to happen. She was first taken to Belgium, and then over to Mexico via ship. At this point Viola and Kiki took over handling her, and they were both not too comfortable with the idea of handing off a 12 year old to anyone. But there was not much they themselves could do without putting themselves in danger. They handed Lee a couple of hundred bucks, let her go, and told her to run. And run she did. Lee eventually found herself stowing away in a truck with gun shipments bound for the border, which just so happened to be heading to Stilwater.
The truck in question was stopped by the Saints when it reached Stilwater, cos they all wanted some fresh new guns without having to pay. They kind of weren't expecting to find a missing British child in the back of the truck hiding amongst toppled over crates. Lee ended up remaining with the Saints, refusing to even try going home as she felt more of a kinship with them than she ever had her remaining family. She was canonized, did odd jobs here and there in return for a place to sleep and some cash for food, and generally tried to make herself as useful as possible. Johnny started to become like an older brother figure to her. Shit hits the fan and Lee is kidnapped once again and almost drowns in a sunken car as a couple of her friends die in said car. She starts to become unhinged, and long story short, kills the police chief in a Yacht explosion, which leaves her in a coma for a year.
By the time she wakes up, Johnny is on trial for like a lot of murder and about to be sentenced to death. Carlos breaks Lee out of prison, and she breaks Johnny out of court. Lee takes up the position of leader of the saints, despite being like literally 14 ish at this point. Lee recruits some more people, more people die, and the saints end up taking over the company Ultor, which leads them to becoming celebs.
A year after that, the Saints hit Steelport, and start to mess with the Syndicate. Johnny dies in a bank heist gone wrong, and all of the saints funds are drained by Matt Miller under the order of Phillipe Loren. Lee wants revenge for Johnny's death and hunts down Phillipe, messing with some of the Morningstars operations before eventually killing him. She recruits some more people and sets her sights on the Deckers, taking them down after dealing with Matt and beating him in a cyberspace duel. She lets him live and he flees to the UK. With the Deckers out of the way she knows that the Luchadores would be easier to finish off, and sets her sights on them. She humiliates Killbane, defeats the Luchadores and defeats STAG too. At some point she kidnaps Matt's favourite actor because that's a plot point the game has for some reason.
Matt gets hired by MI6, and teams up with the Saints, who are teaming up with them to stop a terror organization lead by the ex STAG leader. Evil dude launches a nuke after falling into molten metal or something and Lee ends up like climbing the nuke to disarm it. Everyone confesses shit to her and I shit you not this is literally what happens in game I'm not making stuff up here. She disarms the nuke, jumps tf off it and crash lands in the White House. (At this point in game the boss becomes the President of the USA but I might change that a little because Lee will legit be 16 which is. Too funny. But if she is then fuck it I mean. It's Trump or her right??? If we're using irl logic.)
It's now 2020 and Matt arrives in the USA to warn Lee that aliens are coming. She doesn't believe him. Aliens come and abduct everyone. I hate this fucking game.
Lee is trapped in a simulation, NOT the 1950s sitcom one I haven't worked out what hers is gonna be yet but it'll Hurt. She escapes, Earths blown up, she saves Matt, they bone, they save everyone else, they kill evil aliens, dating happens, wooooooo.
And that’s basically the like lore lore overview. Generally she follows the flow of the saints games but they occur in wildly different years and much closer together.
SR1- 2012 SR2- 2014 SRTT- 2015 SRIV- 2020
I have yet to work out if GOOH will occur in her timeline, and if so, which ending would be canon. Although with the power of AUS we can do all of them. Also she totally has an Agents of Mayhem AU and Matt is actually present bc hes important. Also many other AUs.
TLDR: saints row is crazy
