Good Vibrations Two

This AU got a lot more attention than I expected actually hfjdks I'm so glad everyone likes it!

Anyway, here's part two! We get some concert, some peeks at how Robin helps Steve navigate social situations, and a little Eddie having an itsy-bitsy crisis over Steve's fashion choices.

Have fun! And, as always, if you see any typos, no you didn't (especially for this one since I wrote most of it on my phone actually lmao)

Steve stares at the shirts laid out on his bed, arms crossed over his chest. Choosing jeans had been easy, but choosing a shirt is giving him trouble. What do you wear to a metal show at the local dive bar for a small-town band in which the lead singer is a long-time and way-out-of-your-league crush that you've been holding a candle for since the first time you saw him laugh on top of a cafeteria table?

You definitely don't show up in a plain black shirt, that's for sure.

The lights in the hall outside Steve's room flicker, switching off and on three times. Steve just barely notices, which means he doesn't get his pants scared off when Robin appears in the doorway, grinning at him while pocketing the key to the front door he'd given her months ago into a messenger bag. "Hey, dingus," she says, striding into the room and flopping onto the bed.

Steve rolls his eyes, yanking the shirts out from under her and laying them once more over Robin's stomach and legs. "What shirt should I wear?" he asks.

It takes a few seconds for Steve to look from the shirts to Robin, and she patiently waits until he's staring at her to say, "Just pick one. Nobody's gonna care what you're wearing."

"I care," Steve says, frowning as he looks back at the shirts. For the aforementioned crush reason, Steve cares very much about the shirt he wears. "What says 'Hi, we've never talked before but your music is the only thing I can hear and I think your hair is in desperate need of quality shampoo and also I've been halfway in love with you since, like, sophomore year'?"

Robin considers the question for a long moment before picking up a red sweater. "This one says 'I'm horny'," she offers.

Steve blinks, staring at the sweater for a few beats before laughing. "But I'm not," he says.

Despite looking at Robin, she happens to angle her head toward the sweater, and her response is lost on Steve. He frowns, waits until her jaw has stopped moving, and says, "I didn't get that."

After Robin first learned about Steve's deafness, he'd been overly anxious about asking her to repeat things. Somehow, it was worse to constantly ask when the person knew he couldn't hear well, if at all. But Robin had never shown annoyance; she'd just adjust her posture, make sure Steve could see her lips, and repeat her words. She does all of this now, and Steve gets to read her joking response, "Yeah, but you will be."

And, yeah, she has him there. Steve huffs and collapses onto the bed beside her, sacrificing the shirts. "I'll need a jacket," he says, turning his head to look at Robin so he can read her response.

Instead of words, though, he sees her face light up, and she jumps off the bed. Steve sits up, watching as she digs in her messenger bag before pulling out a t-shirt. "Remember when I stayed over a few weeks ago? And you let me borrow a shirt? You should wear it!"

Thankfully, Robin waits until she's done talking to throw the shirt in Steve's face. Honestly, he only understood a few words ("remember," "borrow," and "wear") but he's gathered enough context clues to get the gist of things.

He spreads the shirt out, humming at the Iron Maiden design. It's not one he wears often; for the most part, it's a shirt he wears on lazy days at home because of how soft it is. But as he's studying the design, Steve is suddenly hit with a stroke of pure genius.

He quickly changes into the shirt and then grabs a varsity jacket (not his letterman, but one he'd seen at the mall and bought on a whim because it used a nice shade of yellow) off his desk, tugging it on over the shirt but leaving it unbuttoned. After a few more seconds of digging around, he finds sneakers under the bed and tugs them on.

"Okay," he says, turning so Robin can see the outfit from every angle. He comes to a stop when he's facing her once more, hands buried in his jacket pockets, and asks, "What do you think? How's it look?"

"I think you'll give Eddie a crisis," Robin replies, wrinkling her nose at the varsity jacket. "Not, like, a bad one. But he'll probably ask where you got the shirt from."

Steve grins, thinking that sounds about perfect, and turns to study himself in the mirror. It's a surprisingly solid blend of metal and jock, and it makes him feel oddly confident, the same way he felt the first time he did his hair just right and everyone complimented it.

"Perfect," he decides. "Let's go."

The ride to the Hideout isn't exactly quiet, but it's not like Steve can talk and drive at the same time. So it's filled with music blasted as high as it can go on his car stereo, causing the whole vehicle to vibrate with each beat. When he finally turns the car off after parking, Robin grimaces as she rubs her ears.

She waits for Steve to be in front of her before saying, "We're putting the windows down next time."

"Oh. Sorry," Steve says, rubbing the back of his neck a little awkwardly as Robin dismissively waves off his apology.

"No, it's fine, I'm just saying. Now, let's get inside before they start."

With that, she loops her arm through Steve's and drags him into the Hideout. They're hit with a wave of cigarette smoke, spilled beer, and sweat as they walk through the door, the combined smells making Steve dizzy. He frowns, leaning closer to Robin as she squeezes his arm. He feels her thumb tap him twice, their code for asking if the other is okay.

"I'm fine," he mumbles, nodding to a table in the corner. "Let's go sit. I just need to get used to...everything."

The lights are weird, too. Despite the place being dim, the few lights that are on are flickering, and Steve is having trouble processing all the new information his (working) senses are taking in.

Thankfully, Robin pulls him over to the table he pointed to, a small circle near a stage of dubious sturdiness. It looks like it can barely hold the instruments, much less those plus the people who will play them. There's an amp on the side of the stage near the table, which means they'll have the perfect spot to feel the music's vibrations. Steve slides into one of the chairs there and closes his eyes, resting his arms on a table that is surprisingly not sticky.

He feels Robin move the other chair next to him, slide in, and start pulling things out of her bag. When Steve opens his eyes again, there's a notebook between them and a variety of pens in all different colors spread out across the open pages. Robin has already picked up a red pen and is writing with it as Steve chooses a purple one.

When Robin is done writing, she taps the page so Steve can read, "Want something to drink?"

"I'm not sure we can trust the glasses here," he writes back.

"The fact you're calling them "glasses" tells me everything. Just sit tight."

With that, Robin drops her pen, winks at Steve, and heads over to the bar where a woman is wiping the counter. Steve watches her for a few seconds before looking around at the other people in the place. Most of them are sitting in groups, talking amongst themselves. Most of them also have mustaches or beards, making it downright impossible for Steve to read their lips.

Instead, Steve just gets a dull kind of rush in his ears, an ever-present background noise he can't escape. Soon enough, maybe because he's thinking about it too much, a high-pitched ringing starts up in his right ear, growing and growing in pitch until it's all he can focus on. Steve grimaces and looks down at the notebook, trying to keep his shoulders relaxed so he doesn't look as tense as he feels. The ringing persists, and he rubs his ear like that's going to help.

His ear is still ringing, though it has started to diminish, when a water bottle is placed in front of him. Steve jerks, forcing himself to calm down as Robin slides into her seat again with a mug of beer that's more foam than anything else. "They're about to start," she says, waiting until Steve has nodded once to show understanding before taking a sip.

Steve looks up at the stage and wonders how he missed Eddie and his friends arriving. As his friends are setting up behind him, Eddie is resting one hand on the neck of his guitar and using the other to hold the mic close to his mouth. Steve can't read his lips, but Eddie's grin is a little contagious as he says something to a guy by the bar. The guy must say something back, because Eddie bursts out laughing, his head thrown back to show off a neck Steve wants to bite.

A tap on his arm brings his attention away, and he looks at the notebook to see Robin has scrawled out a transcript:

"Eddie: Thanks for coming out tonight, everyone

Guy: Fuck off, Munson

Eddie: Love you, too, Jeremy"

Steve snorts, looking up to see Robin's equally amused smile as she continues to write on another page. When he glances at the stage, Steve sees Eddie still talking into the mic, his eyes roaming over the audience until they reach Steve and Robin. Eddie seems to grip the mic tighter, and he holds Steve's eyes for a few seconds, giving just enough time for Steve to wave awkwardly before Eddie looks away. But his smile seems a little bigger than before, and Steve is happy to let himself think he caused it.

When he looks down again, Robin has finished writing, and she nudges the notebook closer to him. Eddie must talk fast, because her writing is almost indistinguishable from chicken scratch in dirt that a cat got dragged through. Thankfully, Steve is an expert at this point.

"Eddie: Anyway, you know the drill. We'll start with some Metallica, treat you to Iron Maiden, throw in a dash of Black Sabbath, and then grace you with a Corroded Coffin original. If you don't like it, not my problem."

Steve feels the beginning of the set as he finishes reading. He sits a little straighter, planting his feet firmly on the floor and placing his palms on the table with his fingers spread. Robin is still writing next to him, most likely transcribing the bits and pieces of conversation she can hear for Steve to read later and laugh at. She doesn't try to get his attention while she does, already knowing it won't be worth it after Steve has shifted into Music Mode.

In the same way that people can tell what song is playing based simply on the first note, Steve can sometimes tell based on the strength and length of the first vibration. In the same way people know the lyrics of songs after listening to them enough times, Steve knows the vibration patterns like the back of his hand. In the same way people who hear their favorite songs played live can tell when a note is wrong or a lyric is sung too fast, Steve can tell when the drummer or bassist makes tiny mistakes that wouldn't be caught otherwise.

And Steve loves it. He loves how his entire body thrums with each vibration that travels from the amp. He loves how he can close his eyes and picture a story based on the music, one that probably doesn't match the lyrics but tends to replace them in his heart. He loves that this is something he can still share with his friends, even if most of them don't realize how different his experience with music is.

So, for all the little bumps and dips that occur in the vibrations as Corroded Coffin plays, for all the tiny slips that certainly go unnoticed by anyone else, and for all the fact that Steve doesn't get to hear Eddie's voice, he can confidently say he loves the show. He's never heard the songs played like this before, and it helps diminish the gut-deep desperation for new music.

And then Corroded Coffin starts a new song. It's one Steve doesn't recognize, one with vibrations that are completely foreign to him, and he jerks his head up to watch Eddie play his guitar in an opening solo. It thrums across the floor, climbing up his legs and spreading in waves from his palms on the table. Steve feels goosebumps chase after it, a new wave washing over him when the guitar solo ends with a particularly strong vibration that's immediately followed by the drums and bass.

Eddie throws himself into the music, moving and twisting and strutting around the stage like he's playing to Madison Square Garden. Steve can't look away, the lyrics incomprehensible but replaced by the jerk of Eddie's hips and the tilt of his head and the little half-spin he does on his heel.

It ends too quickly with one final, reverberating strum that lingers in Steve's bones, burrowing into his marrows as Eddie pushes his hair back and grins into the mic. He says something breathlessly, his shoulders rising and falling rapidly as he tries to catch his breath, and Steve knows he's gone.

He's hopeless.

He's desperate.

He needs more Corroded Coffin, more Eddie, in whatever form he can get.

For the first time, Corroded Coffin gets genuine applause after playing. Usually, the patrons of the Hideout will politely clap (if they even notice the set is over) for about two seconds. Tonight, however, Eddie and his friends are graced with excited clapping, a few shouts, and one very strong whistle from a small table to the left of the stage. And it spreads because even rough biker dudes can fall to peer pressure when it's that enthusiastic.

So, yeah, genuine applause all because of Steve Harrington and Robin Buckley who, Eddie thinks, is surprising company for the former King of Hawkins High. No matter how unexpected, he should still thank them and ask what they thought of the set now that it's over. He carefully sets his guitar on a stand and glances over his shoulder, catching Jeff's gaze and flashing a grin. "I'll be right back," he says before jumping off the stage and heading over to Steve and Robin's table.

As he gets closer, he notices the notebook and pens spread out, colorful writing filling the pages and Steve grinning with amusement as he reads it. Robin is watching him like she's waiting for him to understand an inside joke already so they can laugh about it together. If Eddie didn't already know Robin was like him (band camp, summer after his junior year, during an unfortunate game of Seven Minutes in Heaven where they awkwardly stood in a closet together before Robin commented on his black bandana), he'd wonder if something was going on between them.

"How'd you like the set?" Eddie asks when he reaches the table, suddenly nervous enough to tug on a lock of his hair and pull it in front of his mouth.

Robin looks up, but Steve doesn't. He's still reading the notebook, snorting at whatever is written there like he didn't hear Eddie. It's not until Robin elbows him that he raises his head, eyes widening when he sees Eddie. "Sorry, could you repeat that?" Steve asks, his gaze dropping to Eddie's mouth (Eddie definitely isn't imagining that) and faltering some.

"I asked if you liked the set," Eddie says, frowning slightly as Robin grabs a pen and scribbles something on the notebook. It's too small for him to read, but he doesn't miss how Steve glances down for less than a second before his eyes light up with realization.

"Oh!" he says, looking back at Eddie and flashing a charming grin. "It was great. You guys are so loud, and I've never f-uh, heard anything like your original song before."

Eddie catches the way Steve fumbles, faltering like he wanted to say one word but forced himself to say another. Something is tugging at the back of Eddie's mind, but he can't quite grab onto it just yet. For now, he leans forward, placing both hands on the table so he can be closer to Steve. "You listen to metal often, Harrington?" he asks.

Steve stares at his mouth for a few seconds before nodding, and Eddie feels the thrill of learning something completely unexpected. "I like Black Sabbath best, but Judas Priest and Guns N' Roses are close seconds," Steve says.

"Yeah?" Eddie asks, "What do you like most about it?" He wants to know. Does Steve Harrington (King Steve, Steve "The Hair" Harrington, Steve fucking Harrington) like metal for the same reasons he does? Does he like the stories and the passion and the heavy theatricality of it all?

Steve seems to hesitate, possibly thinking about how to answer, before finally saying, "I like how it's music I can feel. When I listen to metal, it digs into my bones. Other music doesn't."

Somehow, Eddie's grin gets impossibly wider, and his cheeks are hurting from the sheer force of it. He's about to say more when Robin glances at the clock and swears under her breath. "Shit, I promised Mom I'd be home ten minutes ago," she says, grabbing the pens and recklessly throwing them into her bag.

It's the movement that seems to catch Steve's attention, and he looks down at Robin's hands before looking up at the clock. "Oh, fuck, your curfew," he says, looking at Robin like she hadn't just said the same thing two seconds ago.

"Yeah, no shit, dingus," Robin says, pausing long enough to speak while looking straight at Steve before throwing the notebook into her bag, too. She jumps to her feet and hauls Steve out of the chair, making his varsity jacket fall open to reveal an Iron Maiden shirt.

And Eddie thinks his heart just about stops. He doesn't know why, but seeing Steve in a metal band shirt under an undeniably jock jacket makes him feel....something. This is, like, sacrilege, right? How dare Steve Harrington allow Metal and Jock to meet? Doesn't he know the two styles clash? Or, well, they're supposed to clash, but Steve somehow wears them well, and Eddie thinks he's upset and annoyed by the fact.

Before Eddie can analyze that feeling, Steve says, "Sorry to run, Eddie. You played really well. Let me know when the next show is."

There's a lot to unpack there, too. Steve Harrington wants to come to another Corroded Coffin gig. Steve Harrington is sorry he has to cut the conversation short. Steve Harrington thinks his band played really well. Before Eddie can say anything in response, Robin is dragging Steve away, throwing a goodbye over her shoulder.

Eddie doesn't want Steve to go without something, though, some kind of departing word, so he shouts, "See ya later, big boy!"

Steve doesn't look back, but Robin nearly trips over the doorway. She then pauses long enough to say something to Steve, watching with sheer delight as he splutters and glances at Eddie before dragging her through the door. Eddie couldn't stop the grin if he tried, and he didn't try.

Later, when Eddie is sprawled on the floor of his room, staring up at the ceiling and thinking about Steve's stupid combination of Metal and Jock, he'll be struck by a sudden, consuming thought. What if Steve was wearing just the Iron Maiden shirt? What if he wore just the jacket?

Eddie swallows around the sudden lump in his throat, his mouth going dry as he scrambles to his feet and gets ready to take a very, very cold shower.

I've been struggling lately. I've got two projects that are this 🤏 close to being done (probably), and my brain has completely stalled on them... Also, y'know, what can I say? The depression do be depressing lately. SO. I'm sharing a completely out of context snippet from my (loose) The Magicians AU because I do really want to get back into it.

I did not write it this week, or even this month. I actually think I wrote it at the end of last year, lol. AND it's more than seven sentences. So, clearly, I am considering the supposed ~rules of this game to be optional, lmao. Either way, here you go:

Henry's lips taste like salt. Alex pulls back slowly, regrettably, only to find a wet trail from Henry's ocean eyes to his lips. Henry looks away as his hands drop from Alex's hair, but then Alex's hands are the ones on Henry's face, carefully brushing the tears away with his thumb. "Sweetheart," he breathes. "What's going on?" Henry shakes his head. "We almost lost you," he says, voice coming out a bit louder than Alex would've expected. "Alex, I almost lost you." "Okay, I already got an earful from Nora. I don't need—" "—This isn't about what you need." Henry says it with such impressive force that Alex shuts his mouth with an audible clank of his teeth. "Besides, I think you do need to hear it." He swallows. Hard. "And I need to say it."

Why Nagito Komaeda and Izuru Kamukura could be a canon pair in a no-despair AU

Sure, we only have two official scenes where we see them properly interact. But we also have a lot of official non-canon material that has them interact with each other. This leads me to believe that Kamukoma could have been a real, canon ship if the despair tragedy in Danganronpa didn't exist (this is a theory thing I have posted and pinned on all my social media lmao)

Firstly, let’s keep in mind that Nagito has a canon ‘crush’ on Izuru (crushes can mean anything that’s an infatuation, romantic or not). His song, Zettai Kibō Birthday, is literally about him wanting to “do it” with the “absolute hope” he met on campus.

There is also another song he has, Poison (Gekiyaku), where he talks about wanting to meet and love "the biggest hope". Izuru Kamukura is the Ultimate Hope, the absolute hope. It's undeniable that Nagito has a crush on Izuru and likes him romantically and/or sexually.

Moving on: There are two scenes in the anime where we see Nagito and Izuru interact.

First scene, aka THE scene. Nagito’s crush on Izuru began here. He didn’t know Izuru was the Ultimate Hope, he just fell for him. Kazutaka Kodaka even describes this scene as similar to a beautiful, elegant dance. (also, why did Izuru have to grab Nagito by his waist in that scene?? He could've grabbed his back for support instead, which I assume is far more convenient??)

The other anime scene we see them interact may not be with the real Izuru Kamukura, but instead, it's with the AI Alter Ego version of him: The World Destroyer. There are no official sources of Izuru Kamukura smiling (to my knowledge as of so far), except in here. For context: After World Destroyer (AI Izuru) brings up the emotion of "hope" to Nagito in the Danganronpa 2.5 OVA, Nagito starts recalling this emotion. While he reflects on this concept out loud, we see a frame of World Destroyer smiling at him.

Now considering all this, why was THIS the scene that Izuru was smiling?

Did he enjoy hearing Nagito talk about hope?

Or was he happy that Nagito was returning back to his normal self?

Either way, he is only smiling because of Nagito; It's safe to say he does not find Nagito boring since he smiled

Anime aside, we see 1 more canon interaction between Izuru and Nagito. And that's from the second game, chapter 0.

Yes, in this scene Izuru is very openly annoyed by Nagito. But keep in mind, this isn't regular Nagito Komaeda, this is a Remnant of Despair. He is brainwashed by Junko's despair influence, therefore he isn't himself. Would you consider Sonia to still be herself during her time as a Remnant of Despair who convinced her whole country to die?

Unlike Nagito’s world from the 2.5 OVA, Nagito has been forcefully altered to be induced with despair. This is not the real him.

In the OVA scene, Izuru smiles because Nagito was returning to his true self. In this scene, Izuru finds Nagito boring because he is a Remnant of Despair

Therefore, it’s logical to think that Izuru is slightly interested in the REAL Nagito.

Also adding on the Izuru-finds-Nagito's-real-personality-to-be-interesting theory:

World Destroyer in the OVA openly admits to finding Nagito to act unpredictably for him. And all Izuru ever does is complain about things being boring since everything is predictable for him. If he finds Nagito to be someone he could not predict, doesn't that mean there's a chance Izuru finds Nagito interesting rather than boring?

Now, time for non-canon stuff:

Still sticking to the Izuru finds Nagito unpredictable—therefore interesting—argument: This scene in Danganronpa S shows Nagito offering Izuru himself to be someone who listened to his "worries". As expected, Izuru found that thought to be useless. However, he still spends a WHILE conversing with Nagito, meaning that he actually found a conversation with Nagito to be more engaging than he expected. He basically said that he found Nagito more interesting than he anticipated.

More unofficial media analysis:

Izuru Kamukura has been characterized as loyal and altruistic. We see him get out of his way to help someone in need for no huge reason. He literally shoots Nagito in canon because Junko Enoshima got to Izuru first, therefore his loyalty was to Junko.

And if Junko Enoshima never got to him first, we could have seen this altruistic side of Izuru more. If Izuru can find Nagito worth his time, being loyal to him wouldn't be something he would find agonizing.

TL;DR: Izuru Kamukura is loyal to anyone. If he finds Nagito Komaeda unpredictable (interesting), his loyalty to Nagito wouldn't feel too boring. Since Nagito actually has a crush on Izuru, Nagito wouldn't just "use him" like Junko Enoshima. Therefore, Izuru isn't likely to dislike Nagito in the future. Nagito feels attracted to Izuru + Izuru finds someone not boring = Mutual-pining slow-burn Kamukoma is real... as long as it's set in another 'happier' universe.

In the reborn au, do you think over time Tori's techniques derived from her medical knowledge would eventually get noticed by other ninja to be developed further, or would Minato actually seriously have to consider banning it if it got to that point? Or do you think it would just stay an unspoken secret Tori's techniques are breaking some rules but no one is interested enough in the topic to investigate?

hmm i think there might be some assumptions/implications in this ask i don't quite understand, but i'll answer anyway.

most of tori's research is the biology of chakra. this is slowly getting developed in plasticity-- she gets interested in it because it's the basis of all these insane things in ninjaworld, but also it's an inextricable part of every living organism's biology, but also she has literally no background understanding on it. her approach to chakra is also fundamentally different from 99% of other people because she was just trained to think about how bodies work differently, so a lot of research questions she gets fixated on seem very off the beaten track from everyone else. her main thing is that, instead of looking at chakra as something very individual like most ninja, she goes: why CAN'T i just use bacteria? why are we using human blood instead of an animal? we all presumably evolved chakra from the same source. and the answer is there's enough differences in the chakra properties you have to make a lot of modifications, but yes you can use non-human chakra. and that's what's really game changing. you don't need to be limited by your own chakra and you don't even have to be a ninja

and also she's been learning to do this under extremely unideal circumstances and she's very much like "well i have no control over my environment, so i should be able to modify fuinjutsu to it instead of trying to force my surroundings to be ideal." so it's like

kushina: what does this part of the seal do tori: that's so it still works if i paint it on an uneven surface like a rock kushina: huh. smart. minato later: listen i'm very glad you could still use this under adverse conditions minato: but WHY is this the default jutsu. this takes you twice as long to draw.

the later part where she makes insane versions of seals is only really "breaking the rules" in that most people don't get the in depth training to know how to do it themselves. more adept users also sometimes do things like this as the need arises, although most people believe the more elegant solution is "just figure out a way to to it with hand signs." so very little tori does on this front is apt to be banned for fear of people stealing it.

i think in mutagenicity she keeps down the lines of research for using non-human chakra, but ALSO with access to a real lab, she probably also starts on looking at how chakra is manipulated within the body, what the limitations are, and what the biological basis of chakra is. (these questions also seem more likely for a ninja village to want her to ask lmao.) so she might ask something like "how is direction of chakra flow determined, and is the body wired to only be able to use it when it's going in that direction, and also why the fuck is it correlated with hair whorl" and what people NOT in the lab see is that she made a jutsu to reverse chakra flow and it won't kill you but it will fuck up your ability to use chakra indefinitely. like she made it to use on mice and see what happens when chakra gets flipped around to make inferences about how chakra and physical biology interact, but it just seems like wild mad science if you don't have that context. and i think this later category of jutsu is more likely to get branded "forbidden" to prevent users from hurting themselves than as, like, security concerns.

however i will say that tori has fundamentally different beliefs on sharing knowledge than most ninja. she gets protecting clan secrets of bloodline limits, but she also thinks everyone has the inherent right to understand how biology works in a general sense. so while minato might consider it a security risk if, for example, another village stole one of her seals to do their own chakra research, Tori would just be like: oh cool, collaborators. so i can see there being some friction there.

(tori is going to be SO offended when the other ninja research team literally just wants to make a weapon and doesn't care about the genetics of chakra production at all)

Thoughts on firetiger? Any specific headcannons or aus you wanna share?

Oh I am a very big fan of FireTiger! One might consider it Old Reliable, even, haha. There are a lot of different ways one could take the idea, and I enjoy darker themes as well as more casual and light ones, but angst is always important with FireTiger!

One of my favorite fics is @mallowstep's break me like a promise, which I won't link but will note content warnings for the age gap inherent to the relationship, as well as depictions of grooming. The reason this is one of my favorites is because of the perspective being offered on how easily things could have been changed in the context of the story (which is what we as writers do with a lot of our aus, right?). It's a very compelling read.

Like with some of the other "taboo" ships I like, I enjoy the cultural inspection of the situation the parties would find themselves in. Tigerclaw is not a young warrior (weird timelines aside) and Fireheart was made a warrior early. Looking at how they get close and why, what circumstances allow it, how things look when their relationship gets more cemented--how does the clan respond, how does Goldenflower respond, etc.

Other fun aspects to include: is Fireheart involved in the upbringing of Tawny and Bramble? Is Cloud still brought into the Clan, and where is he in relation to this?

All of that lends to more serious prose, theoretically, but also there can be things like "that darn Fireheart sure does wriggle a lot in his sleep, better wake him up at midnight-thirty to get some of that energy out--oops he's very pretty in the moonlight, I wonder what kind of prey he likes" gay panic Tigerclaw. Similarly, one could try a "that Tigerclaw sure is big and scary and imposing and confident and reliable and I wonder if I could get him to teach me some moves so I can be a better warrior" take. Let us not forget Fireheart's narration refers to him as Big and Handsome quite often, lmao.

Ok, so. Since we’re not getting an update this week, I’d like to use this opportunity to ask you guys a question. I know TAMN is mostly character-focused, meaning we mostly get to watch the detailed unfolding personalities of Scar and Grian. However, since this is a zombie apocalypse AU, do you guys ever plan to explain the zombie virus and how it came to be, or at least mention how other places in the world got affected? I personally love it when stories give explanations like this, so I was wondering if you guys ever at least entertained the idea. Thanks!

This is such a good ask, and the short answer is: yes!!

TAMN is kind of specific, in that it's a zombie apocalypse focused on people who aren't at the epicentre of any major outbreaks, and who ultimately will never know much about what's going on at a larger scale. When we watched TLoU, the parts I always pointed out to Key were the scenes of people walking along abandoned roads in the middle of nowhere, and the two of us have always dreamt about writing a road trip fic together, so this is kind of a culmination/combination of that.

That being said! TAMN does exist within a world we've fleshed out, so we know/can keep in mind what's going on in the background globally while Scar and Grian walk miserably through the desert together. We don't want to spoil too much, because we have plans for shorter one-off fics that will flesh those parts out, but I guess one hint we can give is that TAMN references a lot of established mcyt servers and series. If you know where to look......

Key chiming in to basically second everything Lock already said LMAO Originally, we hadn't planned to go into detail about the greater worldbuilding involving the origins of the virus and/or the spread of it, because we meant to focus on Scar and Grian and they just wouldn't ever find out. (At least within the scope of our story itself.) Since Scar and Grian aren't going around looking for a cure or a reason why the outbreak happened, and are just trying to make it from one day to the next, the wider scope of the world's situation simply doesn't fit within the context of their stories in the time frame we're writing. THAT SAID, since we, personally, DO know all those little details, there's absolutely material there to share. Thanks to all the support and love we've gotten for TAMN, it's really made Lock and I consider writing side fics for things happening outside of Scar and Grian's frame of experience! :D One of those things is absolutely the initial outbreak itself!

Just like Lock already said though, a big part of TAMN is Lock and I making an amalgamation of all our favourite MCYT (and MCYT adjacent) series, so... a lot of our inspiration and starting points are just a hop and skip away... ;)

Every newcomer had to prove themselves to the boss. At some point or another. Everyone knew that. However when a couple of the other guys were joking around about waiting for Jake’s “real test”, he didn’t think becoming your guardian would have been considered a “test” at all.

Now, Jake had already had a little spotlight thrown on him by your father. Who had praised him for his meticulous effort, dedication and skill. Not a single target had managed to escape his grasp. That was real talent.

What Jake also hadn’t been expecting was his hard work to turn him into a glorified babysitter. Christ sake, you weren’t a child, you were perfectly capable of taking care of yourself. Hell, with a couple of self defense classes you had potential to join your fathers line of work.

Good potential at that. You were a classic spitfire. I mean when you usually think of a mafia boss’s daughter. You gotta think she’s a spoiled brat. Jake admired you, he would be lying if he said he didn’t.

He would also be lying if he said he didn’t come to harbor a silly crush on you over the months. The two of you had seen a lot together. Though the line between being assigned to watch over you and wanting to watch over you for your own well-being was blurred. Dangerously blurred.

The clear tension the two of you had shared didn’t help. Every second the two of you were alone was adding to the pile atop of the already unstable friendship you both had that was begging to snap.

It was New Year’s eve, the crisp air nipping at your body through your layers. A dreadful start to New Years at that. During the countdown at your family’s yearly celebration someone had thrown a smoke bomb and ambushed the parties venue, successfully taking your father.

Luckily, your mother and you were saved by Jake’s quick thinking. It wasn’t long for your mother to be be reunited with your father and it certainly wasn’t going to be long before the war you knew your father would be looking for would begin. Jake was instructed to hide out with you for however long until this was over, your dad wanted ‘his princess’ to stay safe and out of the way.

Jake had a task and he was going to stay on top of it. Most of your time at the creepy, unassuming motel the two of you were hiding away at was spent with you upside on the bed half paying attention the tv and half paying attention to how sturdy Jake was standing by the door.

How his hand securely and confidently rested on top on the handgun tucked inside the front of his black slacks. Tie loosely tightened around his neck. “Jake. I’m so bored, please you gotta let me ‘outta here.” A smirk reaches his lips before your sentence even ends. Sucking air through his teeth he shrugs at you.

“No can do, princess. Gotta keep you safe.”

You roll your eyes so loudly you’re sure he can hear it. “—But I am safe. I’m around you.” His smirk turns genuine before his stare hardens again and he gazes over at your form. Jake walks towards you and places your chin between his thumb and pointer finger.

Smiling at the way your skin heats up underneath his touch. “Listen, why don’t you just sit and look pretty and I’ll think about letting you out for a bit.” You thought you had been used to Jake’s flirting by now, but the way his suit jacket was discarded on the back of a chair behind him. And the way his hair was ruffled from his hand running through it, it made you wonder if he was truly flirting with you or just playing.

“Oh I can think of a couple of places to sit and look pretty.”

You practically purred up at him, Jake seemed slightly taken aback before his cool demeanor returned. Eyes darkening, his soft hold on your face turned to a grip. Smushing your cheeks and bringing himself down to your level.

“Can you now? You wanna show me?”

He pushed you further onto the bed, slotting himself between your legs and taking this moment to look at how cute you looked. Like a deer in the headlights. You quickly brought your hand around Jake’s neck and pulled him into a kiss. Gasping into his mouth the moment you felt his hardness against your core.

Jake’s hand wandered your body, running his fingertips over all your exposed skin. He moved towards your neck, leaving opened mouth kisses and pretty bruises in the crook. When he began kissing your neck you started to grind against him. Praying for any sort of friction.

You’re not completely sure how the two of you ended up next, his face between your thighs. The hands that rested so perfectly on his weapon now gripped tightly onto the flesh of your skin, leaving crescent shaped marks in their wake. But you were more than happy about where you were that your brain wasn’t even thinking about it.

The slick noises of his tongue mixed with your arousal was enough to make you mewl, sounds of your breathy moans and pleas echoing throughout the small room. Though, you aren’t sure how much he was able to hear with how your thighs were clenching around the side of his face.

Prompting him to retaliate with a slap to your thigh. You yelp but it quickly turns to a giggle at his eyes half lidded looking at you. Running your fingers through his hair, you smile at the groan he lets out.

He’s quick to return, teasing your entrance with a finger before sinking it into you and curling upward. You moan into the air and tighten your hold on his locks. He grunts and inserts another finger making you once more buck your hips into his mouth. It wasn’t long before you were shaking in his hands, begging for release.

“Go on, sweetheart. take what you want.”

Your moans were like music to Jake’s ears. He continued to please you through your orgasm, revealing in the soft “uh.. ha..” that had lingered throughout the atmosphere. Once you had come down, you tried to shut your legs and push Jake’s head away. In response Jake grabbed at your wrist and held it down, while his other hand forced your legs to spread back open.

“Don’t get shy on me now.. Huh? You can give me one more, baby.” The softness of his voice had your head spinning, especially in contrast to how rough he was still being. You let out a shaky gasp and gripped onto his hair. “Jake.. Jake I c–.. ah fuck.. Can’t do it..” Jake’s fingers returned back to you and curled upwards to find your sensitive spot. You clenched around him, making Jake laugh to himself. “You can’t? But here you are still being greedy for it?”

His words alone were enough to have your toes clenching, so when you reached your second orgasm you let out a soft whimper of his name and slumped back down onto the bed. Jake removed himself from between your legs and wiped the bottom half of his face with his hand.

“Attagirl. I knew you could.”

I actually don’t know if you’ve considered this either, but what about their reaction to one of the “ends” to exile?

I think there was one where the witness lead them on a hunt with recordings, which was where “to the ashes go the spoils” came from originally if I remember right

If they left one for Shin, I think it would be “a startling hope for those in the ashes”

In canon, Shin tells Wolf;

I will help where I can, with knowledge gained from a life hunting the very dangers you tempt. And though we'll never meet—our paths crossing at a distance as we each seek to confront all that drives us—from this moment on, our lives will never be the same.

I think, I want to keep this canon? As in, they don't meet, not in person. See each other from a distance, leave little things and messages for one another (mostly from Shin, though)--But not meet. They know each other through the most Hunter tendencies possible, and Shin adopting them still remains true. Its... all very Hunter-typical, I think. That one guy that funded an artist under the condition that they never meet lmao

So... A message left in warning, or any other reason, wouldn't be atypical. Shin probably ends up with his own ones, written in back-ups for just in case. Probably a lot like Cayde's death messages.

But I think Shin would know. Immediately. Something is wrong with this, where is Wolf? What is context to this? The important of the location? This must be an older one, did he miss it when it was intended?

Messages left to the others; they were hidden in places that were expected. Hunters leave messaged in places that are strange, but known to be stumbled upon by the intended audience. Why would it be so easy for Aunor to find a message left for, say, Crow?

Wolf would hide it better than that, and Crow would know better.

Something's wrong.

Regardless of the potential apologies, of the ranting and ramblings of Wolf's vents, Shin pins that something isn't right (funny, isn't that? His 'introduction' to them will be his goodbye, as well.) and sets to trying to figure out what's going on.

Drifter is getting really fed up with Shin's crap.

Oh, can I please have more deets about the Lucemond Arranged Marriage AU idea??

Yeah sure I've thought about it plenty lmao. It's another canon divergence AU (can you tell I love me some fix-its?) and is basically founded on two main premises:

1. Viserys lives until 135 AC

Somehow Viserys is a bit healthier than he was in the show canon, so he has the strength to keep going for six years longer than in canon. By the time he dies in 135 AC, instead of 129 AC, things will have shifted within the families as a result.

Visenya survived her birth in 129 AC, since there was no throne stealing to induce a miscarriage. Corlys died in 132 AC (as in canon). With Viserys around to ensure his claim, Luke succeeded Corlys as Master of Driftmark.

By the time Viserys dies, Visenya will be six years old and Luke will have been Master of Driftmark for three years. However, as in canon, the Greens will still probably try to move to take the throne. But now we're dealing with two Teams who look different than in canon and who are in different positions politically.

Team Black will be in a noticeably stronger position (their dragon riders have matured + Jace has had more time to prove his competence + Luke has full control of Velaryon resources). So it sets up the stage very nicely for Team Green to be quickly (and relatively bloodlessly) overpowered by Team Black, for Rhaenyra to assume her throne, and for her to try to solve the house divide with her favorite trick: a few handy dandy arranged marriages.

2. Same-sex marriages are seen as valid political arrangements

I mean this is kind of necessary for when your plot revolves around two men being in an arranged marriage lmao. I have no trick to make this realistic, you'll just straight up have to suspend your disbelief. Maybe it's a Valyrian tradition that's kind of looked down upon by most of Westeros, the same way as incest is. I also don't write mpreg, so this would require some further suspension of disbelief that magic can be used to let two guys reproduce via a surrogate or smth. Idk man just go with it. But overall, this stuff will have interesting plot implications:

For example, Otto would have had a legitimate reason to try to pimp Alicent out to Rhaenyra, happy to embrace Valyrian taboos when they furthered his private agenda, but Viserys likely pulled rank to steal Alicent away and his subsequent relationships with both girls were more negative as a result.

Instead of proposing that Jace and Helaena marry, Rhaenyra would have probably proposed that Jace and Aegon marry, as the two respective eldest children, but with Jace as the sole ruler. (As in canon, Alicent would refuse and instead marry Aegon to Helaena, this time just because she's the second-eldest instead of because she's the eldest girl.)

The two betrothals between Jace and Baela and Luke and Rhaena would still occur. Jace and Baela would get married before Viserys died and have a child on the way. (Potential angst goldmine here for Viserys's death to still cause a miscarriage- just not Rhaenyra's)

But Luke and Rhaena wouldn't get married quite yet, leaving Luke betrothed but technically unmarried by the time of Viserys's death.

Add 1 and 2 together and you get Lucerys and Aemond: the eldest unmarried children on either of the two teams, right when Rhaenyra is trying to use marriages to unite the teams. You'll also probably get some attempt to marry Jace's bloodline with Aegon's within one of the younger generations, but that's not the main point here.

So you get older, very adult Lucemond by the time they even consider each other in a romantic context- Lucerys will be about 20 and Aemond about 24- and you also get a Lucerys who's already three years into being Master of Driftmark. Lucemond in this content are snarky assholes who are on fairly equal footing (Aemond having Vhagar balances out Luke having a title). Push them together, wind them up, and watch them go.

Here's an interesting question for your Magician AU: How do the boys have their magic in the first place? Are some people just born with it, or were they made by a magician, or did they obtain it, or what?

ALRIGHT.

i know its been... ages. sorry about that.

i originally had some steapunk-ish magical worldbuilding ideas, but it also had weird mafia themes because i was in my Sleuth Jesters Era then. so we scrapped that.

HOWEVER. i can still answer this one!!! answer under the readmore :D

basically, everything living has the "potential" to do magic. it's a part of life - to live, you have a magical core. period. however, MOST people can't access this core. sometimes they can, but only subconsciously. this might manifest as someone with a green thumb, who is just weirdly good with plants. or maybe they have an affinity for animals. or perhaps their cooking is spectacular! little things. (this doesn't mean every talent or skill someone has is a latent magical ability, just that it has been known to manifest. you can be a great cook and have a completely dormant magical core.

now, some beings have either a stronger magical core, or maybe just get lucky and have something that kicks it into gear, making it "active" rather than "dormant." these people can perform magic! lots of different types! illusions, scrying, elemental affinities, manipulating the laws of space and time and all that jazz! they can also get really really good at party tricks lmao.

maybe some of them are even craftspeople - those with active cores that can imbue inanimate objects with magic. :)

so, that's how it is with humans. speaking of imbuing inanimate objects with magic - and therefore life - animatronics.

so here's the deal - magic runs through everything. one of the most common natural sources of magic comes from leylines, shifting currents of magic that travel across the planet. (someone feel free to correct me if im doing leylines a disservice by dropping them in here, im just going with a generic "fantasy novel" definition.)

as it turns out, highly advanced animatronics with incredibly powerful learning AI's and personality chips are what one might call "susceptible" to natural magic, and leylines. Fazbear Entertainment flew a little too close to the sun on this one - eventually their creations became so advanced that, to magic, they appeared as a perfect vessel to fill with life.

Magic saw Freddy Fazbear and said "is anybody gonna turn this thing into a fantastic dad and sentient being?" and then didn't wait for an answer.

Once the magical community REALIZED what had happened - that magic had taken the next "evolutionary step," of sorts, the magical community had no choice but to fight for the rights of what they KNEW were living, thinking, feeling beings.

Since I'm no longer taking the "steampunkish" vibes for the magician AU, I'm going this route instead - it's the regular old modern world, BUT. Animatronics have been found sentient and given rights. It just so happens that, in the context of the Magician!au, Sun and Moon (and Eclipse) found magic to be really, REALLY fun. They chose a career that would let them utilize it in plain sight, and still have tons of interaction with people - Magicians!

Important context is that the magical community is very much hidden from the mundane one. Technically, all animatronics are actually witches, just like humans who have active magical cores. Sun, Moon, and Eclipse can get away with using their magic in front of mundanes because of the job they chose! :D

Part of the reason it was so easy to convince the magical community to fight for animatronic rights was because magic doesn't just bring anything vaguely human shaped to life. If it did, there wouldn't be a need for necromancers - the planet's natural magic would be raising the dead left and right. No, it was that animatronics met all the criteria magic needed to consider something "alive," and so it just. Took the final step. :)

AN IMPORTANT SIDE EFFECT OF THIS, HOWEVER - due to the nature of animatronics technically being more akin to "constructs" than a naturally "born" creature, they have inherent access to their magic. ALL animatronics can perform magic. Which was the OTHER reason the council and magical community fought so hard for their rights - they had to get these guys some kind of TRAINING before they exposed the entire magical community to the planet.
