Belated weekly thoughts-

Mostly because this was too big of an ep to completely skip and I really wanna clear up a few misconceptions I keep seeing in the comments. I know only a small percent of readers see these, but at least a few of you will have the canon facts:

First off, just some personal thoughts-

I get asked a lot of reader input has ever influenced the story and, aside from a few fan-servicey memes like Roof Blank, the answer is no for the vast majority of the comic. This episode was kind of the one exception. I definitely never intended to address Rex's ace identity in the comic (outside of his obliviousness), but the more people learned he was canonly ace, the more I realized how important that was to a lot of people, so I thought it'd be cool to actually canonly address it- of course in a way that's realistic. To be clear, Rex absolutely has no idea what asexuality is, and I doubt any other characters do either. This comic does not take place in the digital age, so Rex doesn't have resources like twitter and reddit to help him figure this stuff out lol. He just knows he's not experiencing attraction the same way everyone else seems to, and that's what this episode is addressing.

Now as far as misconceptions- He is not aromantic. I've seen a few people jump to that? And I'm not really sure where it comes from, because he is very much in love with Bell, as I thought (?) I made clear in this scene. I understand the demi assumption, but I don't think he's that either. Bell's just the first person he's felt romantic attraction to, but he does not have sexual attraction (towards her or anyone). However, he's not repulsed by the idea, and that was also important for me to depict, as someone who...basically identifies the same way haha.

Now, for the BIG misconception- Bell potentially taking Lyss' face. So let's clear some things up:

This would not kill Lyss. She got plastic surgery on her nose that Bell already stole, so she would have a way to breath if Bell took the rest of her face.

Lyss would be able to resume a completely normal life after some reconstructive surgery. Blank victims still have a mouth and eyes under their sealed flesh. She explained last season that the only reason she's missing her eye still is because her parents wouldn't pay for the surgery to fix it after she moved out. Basically, giving Bell the rest of her face would just result in a painful and expensive surgery, but she would be by all means fine.

Not so much a misconception I've seen in this episode but just in general when I bring up the reconstructive surgery point- No, this does not mean you can just keep having your face stolen over and over and over. Your face gets a little harder to rebuild each time, and it's very expensive and painful. Think like an acid burn victim getting facial reconstruction, but just smoother...then getting in the same accident and surgery over and over. Surgeons can only do so much.

Bell would not "lose herself" or "become Lyss" if she stole the rest of her face. At this point, Bell is practically a half-blank in the sense that she fully her own person with her own personality, and stealing the rest of a face wouldn't really change that beyond maybe some influence- Much like how when Rex stole Mikiah's face, he didn't stop being Rex. He still maintained the personality and preferences he had as Rex, but just now has knowledge and memory of all of Mikiah's personality and preferences. Bell is slightly different in the sense that she *started* as a copy of Lyss, so many of their preferences and identities are the same (i.e, if Lyss is a straight cis girl, Bell would be a straight cis girl. If Lyss hated cilantro, Bell would hate cilantro), but she's developed in such a different environment from Lyss, that she has very much adopted her own unique personality (though with traits from Lyss, like her fieriness), and taking the rest of Lyss' face wouldn't change that. She would just have memory and knowledge of the rest of Lyss' life. The only real consequence of taking her face might be...getting some unpleasant memories of Rex and Scion, but even then, Bell has grown into such an understanding and forgiving person, I don't think she'd hold those past actions against them (except maybe Scion for the whole attempted murder stuff).

humans ! in the world of dt and ut they are ever so mysterious and powerful, and i just wanted to draw them pocket-sized. i really like drawing Kris and Lyss (my character) together, even if it's just them standing in the same space, i also think their interaction would be very funny. that’s because lyss isn't very good with monsters, all with the nervousness of being from a nearly all-human populated city; and because kris isn't all very keen on humans either, as it is my personal theory they might bring back bad memories so, they're either very disliked or just uncomfortable to look at for kris specifically (this is theorized the interactions with the human book on the first floor of the library).

Lost Chinese Lore: Lyssa, a goddess who hates her own beauty

Preface

Months ago, I began a project to dig through web.archive.org's archives of the various guild wars 1 websites' many language versions. Hoping mostly to recover trailers that were mostly lost to time (and quite a trove I found), I also found some lore articles that were different from our western versions.

Back in the late 2000s, the Guild Wars 1 community knew well that Asian communities got different lore, most infamous was lore on Abaddon from Nightfall, with fan translations found here and here for two different such articles. I found some articles on the Six Gods, though sadly the ones for Grenth, Balthazar, and Melandru were not saved by web.archive.org.

A while back I got around to cleaning up the horrid machine translation and posted this over on reddit. Since I recovered my ancient and empty tumblr, I’m posting it and the others I have here too for posterity.

Disclaimer: While there is overlap with canon lore, there is no guarantee this is all canon as well. China is known to have had alterations to the story to account for regulations in that nation, so it is unclear how much of this is expanded canon or simply reworked for China and thus non-canon.

About Goddess Lyssa

Lyssa, the twin Goddess of Beauty and Fantasy, oversees beauty and illusion, representing the impermanence of the world and the ever-changing universe. She is the patron god of mesmers, and countless people are often choosing to become mesmers due to the charm of these goddess twins. The statue of the twin goddesses is a carving of two women embracing each other. There are stories that if young people see this statue, they will stare at them involuntarily, until they die from thirst. Very few people in the real world can see Lyssa in person for though Lyssa often travels in the world, ordinary people can't see her uniqueness at all as Lyssa often uses her ability to change, and to appear in the image of ordinary people. Sometimes, she would disguise herself as plain or ugly commoners to test people's morality.

Lyssa has a beauty that is unparalleled in the world, but she knew very well that beauty was the root of many evils in this world. Because the world pays too much attention to the appearance and ignores the essence of the heart, the beautiful appearance has become a tool for some people to commit sins. Lyssa couldn't accept such a thing at all, so she asked herself, and warned her followers, to not be entranced by appearance, and to not care about the beauty and ugliness of people’s appearances. Therefore, in the world of Guild Wars, the most loyal admirers of Lyssa, the mesmers, always wear indifferent masks, so that you can't see the real face hidden underneath.

Worshipers of Lyssa

Mesmers are a very special group in the Guild Wars world. There are many talented performers among them, who often use disguise and illusion to deceive the audience. Most of the time, they use this method to joke around, but sometimes they also use it as a punishment. However, you should never believe that mesmers are just tricks; in fact, they are all powerful wizards.

In battle, they can not only provide magical support to their companions, making them stronger, but also control the opponent's spells, debilitating the enemy. It is relying on this kind of ability that makes mesmers have a relatively high status in various places, and even the leaders of some countries will bow down to the power of illusion or invite famous illusion masters to be their assistants. However, more mesmers chose to give up their noble life and hide in the marketplace as ordinary people. Because that's what their mentor and patron goddess Lyssa often does.

Lyssa highly advocates the beauty of the mind, so she also has high requirements for her followers, especially in terms of quality, which means most mesmers are people of high moral character. They have strict requirements on their words and deeds, so they have also become a respected group.

The Story of Goddess Lyssa

It was a time of peace long, long ago, and an unexpected visitor arrived in the peaceful village of Wren. The woman was soaked all over from the downpour and the cold air was unusually shocking, as if it could freeze a person's veins. Finally, she came to a tavern, found an empty seat, and sat down. The woman still took out the double-sided coin. But again, the tavern owner savagely and forcibly dragged her out. The fiery drunks came out, dragged her and abandoned her on the muddy street. "It seems that none of you have eyes that can distinguish the truth from falsehood. Could it be that no one among you can see me clearly?" The woman screamed while holding the strange coin tightly. Like a reply, a stone flew and hit the woman's forehead, her face now covered with blood and tears.

At this moment, a young girl named Sara walked out from the crowd, "You are priceless to me, my mother." Hearing this, the woman immediately handed the strange coin to Sara, but Sara returned the coin to the woman and then said, "Such a valuable item...I can't accept it." Before she finished speaking, the woman who had been hunched over unexpectedly straightened up. Then, after taking off the dirty clothes from her body, he revealed her true face-one that is a kind of beauty that makes the world amazed. "I am the goddess Lyssa. WEEKLY THOUGHTS!

of which i have no strong opinions? other than reiterating yet again, lyss ain't gonna freaking die. at this point i'm feeling a tad defeated on the matter, because Lyss is literally talking about not knowing what she's gonna do next when this is all over...which I feel like really implies she has no intention of dying??? Not to mention her dad just agreeing to disagree and sending her off. I! Don't fucking think! he'd be so okey dokey about his daughter dying!! But anyway yeah, anyone who reads these has already heard this point of my commentary enough.

Claude was the real highlight of this ep for me. I've said before, development has been some of my fav to write in the entire series, and it was nice to draw this big turning point for him. I'm glad others enjoyed it too and that in general, all those Claude haters have converted into Claude enjoyers or just being neutral.

Other than that... I'm not sure how I feel about people saying they commend Lyss' dad and respect him after their talk... That definitely wasn't exactly what I was going for. I saw one person comment about how some people will talk about politics like it's a debate over their favorite flavor of ice cream, when in reality it's literal human rights, and I think that was a really great way to put it. This entire debate is nothing but an ice cream flavor debate to Luis and he doesn't get why his daughter is willing to cut ties with him over preferring chocolate over vanilla. But to Lyss, it's over human rights violations, and the fact her dad can't see that is exactly why she's leaving. So I'm not exactly sure why that scene got Luis so many respect points other than making a few valid points about not everyone agreeing with Lyss.

My only last note is that everyone keeps calling Desmond a dumby bc he didn't know right away that the letter saying "oi" and "-Rex" was from Rex...

BUT IT WAS IN A DAMN ENVELOPE WHEN HE SAID THAT DO YOU GUYS THINK HE HAS X-RAY VISION!!!???!!?? LAY OFF MY MAN HE JUST RECIEVED AN UNMARKED ENVELOPE AND WAS WAITING TO OPEN IT W/ LYSS!!! /lh /hj
